Joe Stanhope wants BC Ferries routes restored and fares reduced. The chair of the Regional District of Nanaimo, along with thousands of other municipal politicians from throughout B.C., will be in Whistler this week for the annual Union of B.C. Municipalities (UBCM) convention and ferry service promises to be a hot topic. A steady stream of BC Ferries fare increases has dramatically driven down ridership, costing the province’s GDP $2.3 billion over 10 years, according to a new report commissioned by the UBCM. The report analyzes the impact of fare increases on ridership levels and the overall impact of BC Ferries on the provincial economy. It found that while ridership is declining, most other forms of transportation in the province — including vehicle and air — are on the rise. And it’s top of mind for Stanhope. “It’s a pretty big issue,” Stanhope told The NEWS a few days before heading to the annual UBCM convention in Whistler (Sept. 22-26), where he vowed to pledge his support behind a resolution calling on the government to reconsider its policy of cutting service routes and hiking prices. “If the ferry rate increases had been limited to the rate of inflation, passenger volumes would have grown by 19 per cent,” he said, citing the report. “But because they (ferry rates) were raised, ridership dropped 11 per cent.” Stanhope said “the economy of the whole province is affected negatively.” According to the study, the forgone economic activity resulted in an estimated total loss of $609 million in tax revenue (at all levels of government). With an 86 per cent vote in favour of the deal worked out between the province and B.C. Teachers’ Federation, school is back in session tomorrow (Sept. 24) in District 69. Students in most districts returned to school Monday, but the complications of school reconfigurations here over the summer mean local students are starting two days later, as originally scheduled. “As there is a great deal of preparatory work that remains following the

job action, we will be honouring our commitment to two transitional/reconfiguration days in order to ensure that students are coming into safe, orderly and well-prepared learning environments,” said superintendent Rollie Koop in a news release. Monday and Tuesday are non-instructional days, “in order to ensure that our school readiness levels are what we need them to be for the arrival of students on Wednesday.” Wednesday will be as normal a first day back to school as possible, with all students — with the possible excep-

tion of Kindergarten students — starting class an hour late and ending an hour early, which school bus schedules will match. Parents of Kindergarten students will be contacted by their schools about their schedules. Following the locally familiar “reconnect start” system, elementary students will return to their class from the end of last year to take enrolment and be directed to their new class. Parksville councillor seeking federal seat CANDACE WU news@pqbnews.com

Carrie Powell-Davidson is looking to go national. The Parksville city councillor confirmed on Saturday morning she will seek the federal Liberal Party nomination this fall. “It’s all in preliminary stages,” she said in a phone interview from Vancouver Saturday morning, en route to represent the City of Parksville at the annual UBCM convention in Whistler. Powell-Davidson declined further comment on her federal candidacy, except to say that she is “committed to finishing (her) term in council.” It’s unclear if she will seek to retain her council seat in the Nov. 15 municipal elections. The next federal election is slated for Oct. 19, 2015. The candidate selection process is underway for most political parties. The Conservative Party has selected current cabinet minister John Duncan as its candidate in the new riding of Courtenay-Alberni. The NDP has had a couple of people express interest, but have not yet selected its candidate. It’s also unclear when the Liberals will choose their candidate. Last year, federal boundaries were re-drawn moving Parksville Qualicum Beach into a different riding. The new Courtenay-Alberni riding incorporates Courtenay, Baynes Sound, Denman and Hornby Islands, Cumberland, Port Alberni, Qualicum Beach, Parksville, Tofino and Ucluelet. Powell-Davidson is currently serving her first term on city council. In the 2011 municipal election, she received 1,400 votes, 8.95 per cent of the total votes. Of the six city councillors elected, she received the fourth-highest number of votes.

Another proposed pot operation has neighbors up in arms. Keith and Sean Reid, a Vancouver Island father-son duo, have applied through Health Canada to open a medical marijuana facility in Deep Bay, on the corner of Highway 19A and Gainsberg Road. Earlier this month, The NEWS reported Wildflower Marijuana Inc., a Vancouver-based company, also applied to open a medical pot operation in the River’s Edge community of Nanoose Bay, where residents have been rallying against the company’s intension to set up shop. And similarly, the most recent news isn’t sitting well with at least one longtime Bowser resident. “This is terribly unfair to the local community,” said Dianne Eddy Friday afternoon. Eddy, president of the Mapleguard Ratepayer’s Association, said she is planning a “strategy

meeting” within the week calling together Deep Bay/Bowser residents who share her concerns. “This is devastating to our whole area,” she said. “We will be planning various strategies.” Eddy said she is concerned about the location of the proposed facility which she says is close to the community’s elementary school — she is also worried about water, security, traffic and odour issues. Eddy said there are 1,200 homes in the area, most of which will be affected by the presence of a pot operation. “You could imagine having a bakery in the middle of a neighbourhood and the lovely smell of baking would flow through the community,” she said. “Well, this wouldn’t be a lovely smell — in fact, it’s indeed a very pungent smell.” She said a pot facility would take away from the “beautiful spectacular area” of Deep Bay, fearing it would “become a slum.” And while Keith Reid told The NEWS last week the facility was intended to be “relatively small,” Eddy is concerned the operation will expand in the future. The Scottish independence vote was a nail biter that had people around the world watching closely and the effects will likely be analyzed for a long time. “We watched all night long,” said Bob Adam, a long time Oceanside resident who moved to Canada from Scotland 47 years ago. “It got interesting once the results started coming in and Glasgow went ‘Yes,’” he said. “We found it very exciting, mostly I was very proud of Scotland, proud to be Scottish as they showed the world how to do things peacefully.” Like most close observers, he suggested that the relatively close 55 per cent win by the No side will mean there will be a lot more issues to sort out in the coming weeks and years.

After six months of training and fundraising, the Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock team has travelled up Island and by the end of today (Sept. 23) they will already have cycled more than 230 km from Port Hardy to Campbell River. “We’ve been training hard — they never let things get easier,” said Oceanside RCMP Const. Jordan Reid before embarking on the two-week odyssey. He said that while they did similar distances throughout the extensive training period, their trainers kept pushing them faster and harder, cutting their originally-painful cycle up Observatory Hill in Victoria down dramatically to a handful of minutes, for example. Reid also spoke about how trainers lengthened some of their training rides. “Our very first ride was 20 km and the other day we did 145 km,” he said, adding that the entire team of 24 law enforcement, media and guest riders have progressed as a group, but there has been a dramatic change in some, including one rider from Victoria who’d never ridden a bike before and is now comfortable on long treks at high speeds. “That was (the trainer’s) goal, to get us as comfortable on our bikes as possible,” said teammate, fellow Oceanside Const. George Minshull. “The last thing on our mind, should be struggling up a hill, it’s about getting into the communities and getting the message out,” Minshull said of the Black Press-sponsored, Canadian Cancer Society fundraiser. He estimated they have ridden about

3,500 km in training and both local riders said it has already been an amazing trip. “It’s been hard, but tons of fun,” Reid said. “We’ve met a whole lot of good people and Camp Goodtimes was a great experience,” he said of their trip to Maple Ridge, to one of the ride’s major benefactors, where children with cancer get to have a normal summer camp experience. “It’s a pretty cool place, a real special place that not a lot of people get to visit,” Minshull agreed. Both riders said they are already nearing their fundraising goals, and hope the

funds keep coming throughout the tour, with last year’s team raising around $1.2 million for pediatric cancer. The Island effort is one of just four similar epic rides around B.C. every fall, including the Tour de Coast, Tour de North and Tour de Valley. Both local riders thanked the community and encourage people to come out and support the good cause as they ride through town this Thursday and Friday. The team is scheduled to arrive at Qualicum Beach Town Square around 11:45 a.m., Sept. 25 and head on to various events around the area including

school stops, a meet and greet at Thrifty Foods Thursday after lunch and the big beer and burger fundraiser at the Quality Inn Bayside at 6 p.m. There are still $20 tickets available for the evening event, which will include a fun and touching time with the riders and local cancer survivors and supporters. hill, minor hockey parents, just chill. It’s that time of year again, when the nights cool and the arenas fill every weekend with the sounds of our national game. Unfortunately, not all the sounds we hear in the rinks come from the ice. Most minor hockey parents get it. They are there to support their children, and his/her teammates, in a positive way. There are some, however, who need to re-think why they are at the rink. It’s better now, for sure. We are more educated about the harm that can be done by bullies and loudmouths. Our coaches and volunteers go through more rigorous background checks. And the Internet, with its ability to instantly share videos, has a policing effect too. Still there are some in the crowd who believe their kid is going to make the NHL. Or the Western Hockey League. Or get a scholarship. The odds of a minor hockey player in this country making the NHL are worse than one in 4,000, according to research done recently in Ontario, where almost half of Canada’s minor hockey players reside. Like to hear it or not, the odds are even worse for a kid playing in Oceanside Minor Hockey. This is not a hockey mecca. Six players from Kelvington, Sask. have made the NHL. We are not aware of any Oceanside Minor Hockey product who has played in the NHL. Kelvington has a population of about 1,000. It’s not all about the weather or availability of outdoor rinks. It’s OK to chase a dream. As long as it’s the kid’s dream. And it can happen. Once a parent looks past the almost ridiculous notion of an end-game that includes riches or a free education, the real advantages of playing minor hockey, especially at the rep level, become more apparent. There is teamwork and loyalty to be learned. These kids also learn how to behave in restaurants and hotels. They also look great in suits. They are taught that nothing comes without hard work and commitment. They learn there are ramifications for poor behaviour. In short, they learn life lessons they will be able to use off the ice their entire lives, while also learning how to play a game they can play their entire lives. It’s the best game in the world. At the minor hockey level, let’s keep it in perspective. — Editorial by John Harding

PROVE SAFETY There is a growing body of evidence that external electromagnetic fields can be hazardous to our health — fields from controversial sources such as cell phones, cell phone towers and smart meters, etc. The problem is that the strength is these fields is often far greater than our bodies were meant to absorb. usually around 80 millivolts. Any excess usually ends up in the nervous system sending out false signals to the brain, some causing symptoms of ill health. Each cell conducts its processes across the cell membrane by absorbing nutrients and ejecting waste products. The rate at which these are exchanged tells us how efficiently the cell is working as it depends on the difference in the electrical charge on both sides of the membrane. The cell is already challenged by toxic substances and there is no need to be reminded of the many new toxic chemicals introduced into our world every day. I would suggest that we start using our brains and start taking these matters seriously by insisting on the precautionary principal which would require those who expect to make money from the introduction of these toxic chemicals and gadgets to prove firstly that they are safe. ROUNDABOUT WASTE A roundabout at Highway 19A and Village Way is a waste of money. I turn off of 19A to Village Way almost daily and I have yet to see any traffic problems there. The money should be spent on some proper curbs and sidewalks in Qualicum, especially along Village Way and other streets where bus stops are located. I see young children walking on the shoulders of the road on their way to school. It is dangerous, particularly in the winter time in

dark wet weather. Village Way should be a welcoming gateway to Qualicum, much like Memorial Avenue is from the top of Rupert Road with sidewalks boulevards and proper bus shelters. Kudos to Parksville for all the sidewalks they have put in their city over the past five years. It would be nice if Qualicum took a page out of your book on this issue. STEVE ANDERSON Qualicum Beach

SYMPHONY CARPOOL For several years a friend and I have purchased season’s tickets to the Vancouver Island Symphony concerts performed in the Port Theatre in Nanaimo. We would like to continue to do so. However, as we approach our eighties neither of us truly enjoys the evening winter drives to Nanaimo. We have therefore approached the driver of a local shuttle business in the hope that he would provide transportation to the theatre and back to Parksville after the performance and he is prepared to do that. His shuttle bus has the capacity for 12 people and we wondered if there were other seniors in the community who would like to ride along with us in comfort with no hassles regarding parking, for a truly enjoyable evening. PRO CHOICE, NOT A CHOICE Re: H.R. Drummond’s letter (The NEWS, August 12) about pro choice. Thanks to Drummond for pointing out that “no one is allowed to impose their own idea of morality on anyone else” — except for Drummond perhaps, along with Justin Trudeau, who’s just imposed his will on all Liberal MPs by insisting that they all be pro choice. Who’s kidding whom? This is precisely someone imposing his own idea of morality on others. If Trudeau can’t allow his own members any choice but lip service, isn’t this the start of that “dangerous and slippery slope” that Drummond professes to abhor? What’s next on the noble agenda? Cattle prods? Centralized control by an autocratic authority?

POSTPONING TAXES

Re: your editorial “Strike frustrations” (The NEWS, Sept 9). Yes, the B.C. Liberals have not directly raised taxes. However, since Gordon Campbell and now Christy Clark came to power, they have continually every year raised the provincial debt. Last year, Clark’s government borrowed a further $4 billion. The only way to pay off a taxpayer’s mortgage is from tax revenue from either personal, sales and/or corporate taxes. In truth, Clark is passing on/post-

Local musician part of Pink Floyd tribute band The Wall features special effects and laser light show BRENDA GOUGH NEWS Contributor

Whether you are a casual fan or a rabid Floydian you won’t want to miss The Wall performing at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre (PCCC) this Saturday night. The nine piece tribute act will present the complete Pink Floyd experience in their elaborate show that has special effects including laser lights and a projection screen. Pink Floyd are one of the most successful and influential rock groups of all time. The English rockers formed in London in the early 1960s and went on to achieve international acclaim with their progressive and psychedelic music. Distinguished by their use of philosophical lyrics, sonic experimentation, and elaborate live shows, they are one of the most commercially successful and musically influential groups in the history of popular music. Parksville musician Terry Sheldrake said he grew up listening to Pink Floyd and has always been a fan of the group. About a year ago, he convinced some like minded musicians to form the cover band. He said The Wall has a live show that is pretty close to what you would get if you went to a Pink Floyd concert. “We learned the songs as Pink Floyd played them. The songs are really amazing to play … they are really intricate and you never get bored of playing them,” he acknowledged. He said they will perform a mix of Pink Floyd’s best-known material to satisfy Floyd fans of every generation including: Comfortably Numb, Wish You Were Here, Time, Another Brick In the Wall, Hey You, Money, Welcome to the Machine and Mother. “We do some of their later stuff as well. We try to cover the more popular songs,

My favourite is Young Lust.” A lot of the band members from The Wall are from Port Alberni but Sheldrake who grew up in the Parksville Qualicum Beach area has played with several Vancouver Island rock bands including, The Blatantly Obvious, Cabin Fever, Dean Martini Band and In Transit. He said he can’t wait to bring The Wall’s live show to his turf. “I have been in a lot of bands but what has been really great about this band is everyone wants to make great music …

The United Way’s fundraising campaign got a big donation September 15 from the Harris Auto Group in Parksville and Nanaimo. Two cheques in the amount of $6,690 were presented to the United Way at a community fund kick-off event hosted at Harris Oceanside GM in Parksville. The money generated from the employee giving program at the Harris Auto Group was matched by the company and added up to $13,380 for the United Way community fund. That fund helps 48 programs in the Oceanside area including the Errington Therapeutic Riding Association (ETRA) which has been improving lives for more than 25 years. Therapeutic riding is beneficial for improving the physical and/or mental well-being of riders suffering from a wide range of disabilities. Volunteers are the back bone of the operation and Hanna Coulson says funding from the United Way and the Parksville Rotary Club enabled them to purchase a saddle that properly fits one of their horses. The Parksville Museum Farmers Market at Craig Heritage Park has one more Friday evening. The market which started on July 11 will finish up the season on September 26. Market manager Megan Olsen says the market has been outstanding, attracting an average of 650 visitors a night. The Parksville and District Historical Society appreciates that it has generated some revenue and increased exposure for them. More than 8000 people have visited the museum so far this year compared to previous years where the museum saw 2,500 visitors at the most. Parksville city council approved the market on a trial basis and Olsen said they are optimistic the city will approve the re-zoning for next year, May 8 is their potential start date. She said they are also thinking of adding an artisan market on Sunday. You can take in the last museum market this Friday night from 5 to 8 p.m. Also wrapping up their season is the Errington Farmers Market. Open from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. the market offers local produce, baked goods and local arts and crafts. September 27 is your last chance this year to visit, have a coffee and a famous market sticky bun or one of Linda’s pumpkin pecan scones. The fall colours are spectacular at Milner Gardens and Woodland in Qualicum Beach and the cost of admission drops to winter rates this weekend. If you want to add a piece of the heritage garden to your own yard, check out the annual fall plant sale September 27 and 28 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. There will be a large selection of propagated material with all proceeds going towards supporting the gardens. The Camellia Tea Room will be open early at 11 a.m. on both days of the plant sale. Fall is a perfect time to plant and not just for bulbs. Fall plantings of trees, shrubs, roses and perennials are more likely to survive and thrive than any other season. Root systems are not working overtime to supply food and water, so plants can take their time to seek out the perfect spot to settle in.

The ALS ice bucket challenge provided some great entertainment for residents at The Gardens in Qualicum Beach September 11. Greg Greenshields of Life Support Assisted Living, The Gardens social coordinator Sergit Jhaj and Debbie Hughes of Qualicum Beach Pharmasave generated $100 for the cause. The trio had more than one container of freezing cold water dumped on them following the annual Scooter Indy 500.

The city of Parksville still has to approve re-zoning of the site for the market, but judging by how popular it has been organizers are already planning for next season. The last museum market this Friday night goes from 5 to 8 p.m.

When two creative minds connect, it is almost impossible to see where one stops or one starts. The two parts become one and the lines between are blurred. Corry Lunn and Darrel Nygaard are creative partners, in life and in art. They have the ability to tap into the same creative force field and while their work is somewhat separate, the connections run like a thread through their work. Call them modern day archeologists. They search for the old and the unused, the rusted and tired artifacts that need a new life. Their garden and open studio at Union Bay is a testament to the world they share. Large western red cedar burls are transformed into garden chimes that weigh hundreds of pounds but look surprisingly delicate. The earthy organic forms are combined with marine objects like portholes and chains, bells and wind chimes. A incongruous combination but one where the air wends it way through creating another dimension of art — music from the wind. Add to that benches and planters fashioned from driftwood that transform the garden studio into an artistic refuge. “What we love is all this edge grain, that’s what makes the pieces really unique,” said Lunn referring to the large burl slabs. “We incorporate old, used, found objects and give them new life.” Nygaard is first and foremost a woodworker. He has an affinity with the organic and transforms the ancient tree burls and slabs into large garden sculptures. The rich grain of the wood is brought out and shown as art created by nature. It has a Zen sensibility and one looks upon them with a sort of reverence. Their garden studio is a fine example of how people can use sculptures to create personal environments and inspire them to do more. Nygaard and Lunn’s work is all about their environment — the West Coast. Some of the components in their work are resurrected from old lumber mill and marine sites, others from second hand stores and yard sales. The commonality of the pieces is their high regard for nature. Their mediums are different but their sensibilities are the same. They have worked together on any number of pieces, combining clay with wood and metal. Some hanging works are made entirely from salvaged and found objects. Both see the beauty in the rusted and tarnished, the usefulness now for the eyes rather than hands. Their work is always evolving and

fossils are being seen in many of the new pieces. “You get your inspiration from all over,” said Lunn. Where Nygaard gives new life to found objects, in her own work Lunn gives life through fire and flame. Her ceramic sculptures pay homage to the natural world around her. Raku and burnished vessels, plaques and sculptures team with life. Playful otters, statuesque herons, stately ravens and peaceful Buddhas are all fueled from her aesthetic sensibility and talent. She breathes life into the art she shapes with her hands, pulling from the deep regard she has for the natural form, the fire does the rest. Among Lunn’s newest sculptures is a Fire Phoenix, a burnished vessel featuring the bird from Greek mythology that is cyclically regenerated and reborn from the ashes of its predecessor. So it is with Lunn and Nygaard, they give new life to the remnants of the past always with an eye on the present. “Sea Change” Wood and Pottery, their collaborative show, will open October 3 in the Oceanside Gallery at the McMillan Arts Centre, 133 McMillan Street, Parksville. An opening reception takes place from 7-9 p.m.

The art of handcrafting sushi continues to evolve at Sushi Hama, Qualicum Beach’s newest fusion japanese eatery. The restaurant is nestled in the town’s quaint Chilham Village and owner B.J. Eom officially opened the doors in May. Eom, 35, the culinary mastermind behind the creative cuisine, said his menu is always changing — depending on the season, what kind of fresh ingredients he can get his hands onto and the tastebuds of his clientele. “I always like to try new things,” he said, bringing out a majestic wooden sushi boat dotted with bright red salmon sashimi, cucumber sunomono and handpressed sushi that comes in the form of rectangular boxes instead of the more common rolls. Eom has been in the industry for more than 15 years, boasting extensive culinary experience from many different parts of the world. He has a self-proclaimed love affair with food and admits that while he initially wasn’t a fan of Western cuisine, he’s recently developed a soft spot for hamburgers and pizza. “I’ve gained 50 pounds since being in North America,” he laughed, rubbing his stomach. Eom said his interest in international food provides inspiration for many of his less-traditional dishes, such as his personal favourite: a simple California roll topped with charcoal-seared salmon. Transitioning to Qualicum Beach, Eom said, has been “challenging.” He said he didn’t know much about the town and wound up here by way of a quick

Once Eom secured the 563-square-foot space, he packed his bags and went out on a limb. “People say I’m crazy,” he said, chuckling. “I figure I have a skill and I want to make people good food — if they’re happy, I’m happy.” Eom, who has a wife and four-year-old daughter back in Japan, said he wanted to relocate to a familyorientated community as he plans on bringing his family over to Canada someday. He said he’s learned a lot about Canadian culture since his arrival in February — mostly from the high school students he employed over the summer and the people who come to eat at Sushi Hama. “Canada is nice. It’s a very peaceful country especially compared to the States,” he said. “And the students (who work here) are so smart and diligent and responsible — they make me want to live here.” Eom said he uses fresh, local ingredients in all of his dishes — but most importantly he loves presentation. “It (sushi) is pretty compared to other food if you spend the time on it,” he said, pointing to a handmade swan crafted out of apple slices, a flower cut from a cucumber and an umbrella made out of an orange. The decorative, eatable and healthy pieces of art are a big part of Eom’s cooking style, giving each dish a unique flare. Sushi Hama — Hama means beach in Japanese — is open Monday to Saturday from 11.30 a.m. to 8.30 p.m. and it’s located at 221 Second Avenue in Qualicum Beach. JOE MOLLIN May 14, 1964 – August 26, 2014 Joe passed away at Arrowsmith Lodge in Parksville after a progression of dementia. He was a resident of Parksville for the greater part of his life. With Down Syndrome he was educated at the Christopher Robin School in Nanaimo until graduation. He worked at the Dairy Queen, A&W, and Home Hardware for extra cash to buy sports magazines. He was an avid fan of sports, especially Hockey. Following all the players in the N.H.L. with his favorites the Calgary Flames. Joe also loved playing hockey, baseball and curling, but mostly bowling. He attended Special Olympics at UVIC in Victoria for 40 years. Joe was a very likeable, friendly person saying “Hi� to anyone on the street. Thank you to the Ministry of Social Services, Community groups, VIHA, foster families, and care givers throughout his life. The family of Alfred (Brown) announces his passing at Swan Valley Lodge in Creston, BC on Monday, August 25, 2014 at the age of 86. Alfred was born to parents Ivy and Henry Husband on April 30, 1928 in Innisfail, AB. Dad was a hardworking man all of his life, kind to a fault, master of many crafts, compassionate, and a great teacher to his children. His nickname “Brown� was well-earned from the many hours he spent in the outdoors. He began his working career as a gentleman farmer in Alberta and spent his later years in the construction industry in British Columbia. In his free time he enjoyed walking, square dancing, and traveling across the country visiting his children. Dad will be fondly remembered for a spirit of giving that was often reflected in his willingness to help others. He touched the lives of many and his children will always be proud to claim him as their father. Alfred was predeceased by his parents Ivy and Henry Husband and his two brothers Henry Husband and Roy (Nip) Husband. He is survived by his former wife and mother of his children, Betty Husband; sons Rob (Helen) Husband and Jim Husband; daughter Brenda (Joe) Wilkie; five grandchildren Charity (Landon) Fehr, Amy Husband, Anthony Husband, Jeremy Wilkie, Sebastian (Julie) Wilkie; three greatgrandchildren, Asher Fehr, Hannah Wilkie and Aiden Wilkie; sister Gladys Doel of Wetaskawin, Alberta, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

The Parksville Lawn Bowling Club held their second to last event of the season. The Nicklen Roy Mackay Coast Realty Group George Gibson Open Triples Tournament was held Sept. 17-18, hot on the heels of the Canadian National Mixed Pairs. Parksville welcomed players from across the Island and took four of the six top positions with two teams from Nanaimo playing spoiler for the sweep. Both Aaron Nicklen of Coast Realty and George Gibson made presentations to the winners. The winners and first in the late draw were Rick Quibell, Lynne Chwartacki and Mary Mulligan of Nanaimo. In second in the late draw were Rod and Frances Tester with Dean Thompson, of Nanaimo. Rounding out third was Parksville’s Diane Proctor with Rick and Lynne Britz. The early draw was an all Parksville affair. First was the team of Chris and Martin Fereday and Keith Baker. Coming in second were Art and Jeanette Fereguson with Jon Lansdowne. In third was the team of Dave Cole with Bob Mascho and Brenda Gorman. Next for the club is the wrap up tournament on Sept. 28 and awards dinner on the 29th. Sept. 30 will see the greens put to bed for the winter.

It was a tough weekend for the Save–On–Foods Oceanside Generals, who lost the three games they played in three days, seeing their record slip to 1–6. The Gens opened their weekend with a game against the Campbell River Storm, who put up another eight-goal performance, handing them an 8–2 loss. The second game saw the Generals back at home, facing the Nanaimo Buccaneers. The Gens, once again, were on the losing end of a 5–3 game. Sunday saw their third game in as many days against the Kerry Park Islanders, who also played three in three. They beat the Gens 4–1. “It was a busy weekend, the boys knew what was ahead and we prepared as best we could,”

Held off the score sheet on Sunday, Weme is still happy to be putting the puck in the net and doing what he can to help. “Sometimes you just have to get to those dirty areas and try to put the puck on the net,” Weme said. “They aren’t pretty goals by any means but a goal is a goal, it doesn’t matter if it’s a highlight reel goal or a greasy rebound that goes in off your knee. I’m happy to be helping the team in any way I can.” Discipline has been a consistent message this season from the coaching staff, as the Gens have looked to gain momentum,

but end up slowing themselves with penalties. “We’re showing the effort with each game that goes by, it’s there,” Johns said. “We just need to see that effort consistently over 60 minutes. Friday was tough, Saturday we played much better and Sunday was the same, we fought hard and showed that the effort is there but we just need to have it be there consistently.” The Gens will be back at practice tonight for a Wednesday night tilt against the Westshore Wolves in Victoria. They are home for the weekend for ‘Skate with the Generals’ Saturday (23:30 p.m.), then host the Penninsula Panthers Sunday 2:30 p.m. Fans who show up Sunday wearing white and bring a non– perishable food item for the SOS, get in half price.

The success of the local Zone 2 athletes at the B.C. Senior Games, held in Langley, was evident with the amount of winners on the podium. PARKSVILLE QUALICUM HISTORY - 7 PRESIDENTS IN 30 YEARS

The Qualicum Beach Historical & Museum Society is celebrating 30 years as a society this year. It is an organization built by volunteers. To honour those who established the society and built the museum and archives, the Society is naming a series of volunteer awards after its Past Board Presidents - Cora Skipsey, Jim Storey, Ray Ducker, Art Skipsey, Graham Beard, Jim Purdon and Gil Gilmore. In reviewing materials about these museum leaders, quotes from Jim Storey reflect the attitude of all of them - “Together we are Number One”, “We achieve great strengths by working together”, “Don’t sit and talk about it, just get it done”, “It doesn’t matter who gets the credit”. Ada Ducker remembers that shortly after moving here – and as they were beginning to build their home - husband Ray saw an ad in the local paper for a volunteer project manager and so they both went to the meeting. By the end of the meeting the group of ladies present, led by Cora Skipsey, had convinced Ray he should take on the project - refurbishing the original QB power house for use as a museum building. That then evolved into the reconstruction of the MacIntosh building which had been the power house building in Port Alberni and was brought over and rebuilt brick by brick. The Museum Board were all movers and shakers in the early 1990’s in Qualicum Beach. If you saw them coming you knew to reach for your wallet or get out your cheque book because they were working on a variety of projects and had to find people to pay for them. They also wanted to encourage collaboration and the museum society worked with other groups. The Town was about to celebrate its 50th Anniversary so the Museum had the bronze plaques at the top of the slope above the Train Station created. Some society members were also part of the restoration of the train station. Others were involved with the Downtown Revitalization. The Civic Centre was about to open after heavy controversy about whether the community should build it or not. That didn’t stop Jim Storey, then President of the museum society from championing a piece of artwork for the lobby. The mural in the front lobby is still stunning. The wood and fibre scene of the waterfront was created locally. According to Jim’s files: carver, Francois Mongeau, working from his studio at The Old School House chose to work in yellow cedar, a wood common to the area. Weaver, Elaine Duncan was commissioned to work with Francois to complete the piece. The wood for the mural was donated by McMillan & Bloedel and the milling completed by Errington Cedar. The planks were kiln-dried by Barefoot Floors & Interiors. “The (mural) theme is the Family; several generations of people relaxing and playing on Qualicum’s sandy wa-

Francois felt it important to achieve a contemporary feeling so that future generations can look at the mural and catch a glimpse of the people of Qualicum Beach on the town’s fiftieth anniversary. “I’ve thought of this piece a hundred years from now – I’ve tried to portray the people of today as what was happening today. A lot of wood carvers go towards the ancestral look. I’m portraying a resort town; retirement place, but also a place for children and grandchildren.” “A sensibility for the beauty of the area is shared by Elaine Duncan. Elaine’s weaving represents the sky, sea and sand of Qualicum’s arching beach. Working in 100% wool, designed to complement the wood work, Elaine was unable to fit the 16 foot piece onto a single loom. Instead she constructed five 39” panels placed side-byside, rich in the colours of Vancouver Island: blues and mauves, teal and taupe.” As the museum’s MacIntosh building was being recreated, Jim Storey and others realized that they didn’t have enough display material yet to fill the building so Graham Beard was invited to display his paleontology collection in the building. It remains a big a draw for vis-

itors to this day and Graham still sits on the board after doing his stint as President. Past President, Jim Purdon recalls having just moved into his house and getting a visit from Ray Ducker, inviting him to come down the block to the museum. Word had gotten out that Jim was an experienced story teller who had worked at a national historic park. Jim replied that he had his house to restore, starting with getting a foundation under it. Next thing he knew, Ray showed up with a bunch of building jacks to loan him. When President Art Skipsey wanted to retire from the board, he went knocking on Jim’s door too. Jim took on the job of President. Gil Gilmore became Vice President and when Jim had an opportunity to travel one winter, Gil stepped up the plate and became acting President. Gil and his buddies are responsible for creating the interactive communications display in the original Power House museum building that is a huge hit with kids and adults alike. It is with deep gratitude that the Qualicum Beach Historical and Museum Society recognizes the contributions of all of our volunteers – past and present. Every job is important as they all need to be done.
