Luck challenges mayor’s seat Former CRMG councillor says slate’s work was positive, but new leadership is required Carol Aun MISSION RECORD

A Mission councillor is staging an electorial challenge to the current mayor for the job of leading the city. Coun. Tony Luck says he is making the political leap to “stand up for my principles and ethics.” While he has enjoyed his first term on council, Luck maintains there is a clear leadership void. “I want to bring a new vision and leadership style that’s more conducive, more respectful, and more inclusive to the people in the community,” said Luck. Luck said he stayed with CRMG (Citizens for Responsible Municipal Government) for more than two years to try to

young families, and run a business-friendly district. “We’ve done a great job focusing our attention on the bottom line. I know we can’t always have zero (per cent tax rates), but we’ll be careful and cautious about raising taxes.” Luck is running as an independent. He currently works as an advisor with Investors Group, but is prepared to dedicate his time to being a full-time mayor. Luck has six children and 10 grandchildren. He has lived in Mission for six years. Adlem, who is seeking re-election, said he welcomes the challenge. “Everything we promised, we delivered, through good leadership,” he said. “If that’s a void in leadership, then I’m guilty. “I’ll be happy to let the voters of Mission decide.”

On Sept. 20 of last year, 14-month-old Alexcia Myanna McKamey lost her life under suspicious circumstances, leaving behind a grief-stricken family wanting some answers. One year later, they still do not have them, and mom Jacqueline McKamey of Abbotsford says they are tired of waiting. “I just need closure, and to move forward and have answers. If somebody harmed her (Alexcia), they need to go to jail,” she says. McKamey was born and raised in Mission, which will be the location this Saturday (Sept. 20) for what Jacqueline is calling Alexcia’s “angelversary” – one year since her death. Alexcia’s death is the subject of an ongoing investigation by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT). RCMP were called to a house on Mullins Road in Chilliwack at about 10 p.m. on Sept. 20, 2013, when Alexica appeared to be in med-

ical distress. She was taken to hospital, where attempts to revive her were unsuccessful. IHIT took over the file when the death was considered to involve foul play, and an autopsy was to be conducted. The results of the autopsy have not been released publicly or even privately to Alexcia’s family, despite their ongoing pleas for the results. Jacqueline said the family has been told they will receive those answers once the matter proceeds through the Crown counsel’s office. Police forward their files to the Crown for consideration and approval of any charges to be laid in criminal matters. But Jacqueline, who is now four months’ pregnant with her second child, said the family was hoping to have those answers months ago, and she feels like they are being strung along. “It makes me feel untrusting of the police CONTINUED ON 3

Teachers poised to return Carol Aun MISSION RECORD

Mission students will be back in schools if the proposed six-year contract for teachers is accepted. Teachers across the province voted on the negotiated deal Thursday, but results were not expected to be known until 9 p.m., after The Record’s press deadline. If the deal is ratified, teachers will be back in schools Friday to prepare for classes next week. Classes will start up Monday, Sept. 22, according to the Mission Public Schools’ website. The first day of class will run from 8:30 to 11 a.m. for elementary school students, and from 8:50 to 11:30 a.m. for middle and secondary school students.

Educators will continue to prepare for the school year in the afternoon, but some teachers say it will be difficult for senior students on a semester program to make up for the lost time in the classroom. Most teachers will be happy to go back to work, said Mission Teachers’ Union president Mark Bradshaw. Some districts are recommending the contract be accepted, while other are not. In Mission, the union is not making a recommendation. The negotiated contract is a good beginning, based on the stress of the situation, said teacher Anthony Luyken. “We still need to continue with the momentum to get back to where we were in class size and composition (prior to 2002)...” Visit missioncityrecord.com for updates

Police at the time said the residents of the Chilliwack home where Alexcia was in medical distress were not involved in her death. Not long after Alexcia’s death, Jacqueline set up a roadside memorial in Abbotsford – on Elmwood Drive near Discovery Trail – in order to help her grieve. The memorial grew with messages and gifts from family, friends and strangers. Many people left sunglasses at the memorial in tribute to one of Alexcia’s favourite things. “She would take the sunglasses off your face even if she was wearing her own,” Jacqueline says, laughing. The memorial was set up on private property, and the owners asked Jacqueline to take it down a few months ago. It is now located in Mission – at Dewdney Trunk Road and Cedar Street – because Jacqueline was born and raised in the community. Saturday’s event will celebrate Alexcia’s short life with a potluck barbecue and a balloon release. It starts at 1 p.m. at Heritage Park in

Mission, and everyone is welcome. A rally is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 22 outside the Abbotsford courthouse at 32203 South Fraser Way, at 1 p.m., to pressure authorities to speed up the matter,

Wildfire in Silverdale Chamber executive director resigns Cause of blaze believed to be electrical Carol Aun

It took firefighters about 3.5 hours to contain a wildfire Sunday afternoon in Silverdale. Crews were called to Keystone Avenue, between Townshipline Avenue and Clay Street, around 12:30 p.m. and found trees in the area on fire after falling on BC Hydro power lines. “Without warning, the power line broke away from the insulator on the pole and fell to the ground intact,” explained Capt. Norm MacLeod, who was the incident commander on scene. “Energy escaped from

the line and started a rapidly growing fire in the forested area on the north side of Keystone.” MacLeod estimates the fire was burning about 0.3 hectares and called in additional resources from all three Mission fire stations, Coastal Fire Centre, Mission’s forestry department, BC Hydro, RCMP, and BC Ambulance. The power line and electrical current made it challenging for firefighters to attack the fire in the beginning. “ Fo r t u n a t e l y, Coastal Fire Centre had helicopters available and close by,

allowing us to contain the fire to the 0.3 hectares,” said MacLeod. “Other challenges were the steep terrain and access to the fire from the perimeter.” F i r e f i g h t e r s advanced on the fire after BC Hydro shut off the power. Crews stayed on scene until close to 6:30 p.m. to extinguish any hot spots. Buildings in the area were not at risk, but trees in the area were damaged, said MacLeod. The road was closed to traffic for the afternoon. Investigators believe the cause of the fire was electrical.

Mission’s most outspoken advocate for the business community is shifting her focus to the medical field. Michelle Favero is resigning from her position as the executive director of the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce, and taking a position with the Abbotsford Division of Family Practice. She will serve as the new executive director with that organization. Favero’s last day with the chamber will be Oct. 3. She told The Record that serving the Mission business community for five

Tentative agreement in teachers’ strike is good news for all

It’s very good news that the B.C. government and the B.C. Teachers Federation have come to a contract agreement. If teachers vote to ratify it on Thursday (after The Record’s deadline), it appears students will be back in school by Monday. Credit for the settlement rests primarily with veteran mediator Vince Ready, who was able to get two very entrenched sides to bend enough that they could come to an agreement. The BCTF and employers also deserve credit for finally getting down to reality, after far too many false starts in the past several months. The agreement will not resolve

the court cases over the 2002 contract stripping by the BC Liberal government, which was the underlying issue which kept the two sides far apart. That matter will go to the B.C. Court of Appeal next month, after two B.C. Supreme Court judgments went against the government. Hopefully, that matter will be settled sooner rather than later, but given the glacial pace of court proceedings and the likelihood that the Court of Appeal decision will be appealed to the Supreme Court of Canada, a final resolution on class size and composition in B.C. schools is still years away. – Black Press

Peeved by train noise

I take no exception to the racetrack, as it is seasonal and does employ many people. Recent events there have also brought tourists and it was really nice to see people walking the streets of downtown Mission, shopping and dining. I also don’t take exception to the businesses along the river, or on the river, as they are an important part of industry that benefits not only the city, but the province as well. But as the city grows and expands, no longer are we all living on huge acreages in the hills. I live in downtown Mission and my peeve is the amount of train noise. When I first moved to Mission nine years ago, the trains were much quieter than they are now. Now I am awakened numerous times during the night to whistles loud enough to wake the dead. What changed? The few times I was able to rent my house out, the tenants likewise didn’t want to be aroused in the middle of the night. The selling of properties in downtown Mission has suf-

Favourite sounds I just wanted to say a huge thank you to D. Campbell for his letter (in regard to the Mission Raceway). I remember the article that sparked his response and in all honesty, when I read it, I let out a little chuckle. It is one of my favourite things to hear when I am on a weekend night walk with my dog Enzo. The sound of the race track is one of my favourite things and always the highlight of our walk – almost makes me want to jump in my truck and join in on the fun. DON’T USE BAD WORDS. Almost every child has at one time been told, “Don’t use bad words.” It seems that in our society today there are more distasteful words than ever, and it is almost impossible to completely shield ourselves or our children from all of them. Children are great imitators of those around them, and their actions and language are influenced by what they see and hear. Adults may hear certain inappropriate words and will not be tempted to repeat them. However, young children often do not understand what they are saying. We all have a responsibility for our actions and our words, and to display good examples to those around us. The Bible tells us, “Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for edifying, as fits the occasion, that it may impart grace to those who hear” (Ephesians 4:29). Our vocabulary is habit-forming, and the use of “bad words” reflects a disregard for ourselves as well as for those around us.

Can we not somehow use our heads, though, and find a way to accommodate the downtown residents who are suffering broken sleep and real estate issues that also stagnate improvements in the downtown core? MUNICIPAL PARTNERSHIP FEE FOR SERVICE GRANTS FOR 2015 The District of Mission advises that the deadline for applying for a 2015 Municipal Partnership Fee for Service Grant is October 17, 2014. Application forms for organizations that may be eligible for a fee for service grant are now available at the Municipal Office, 8645 Stave Lake Street, Mission, BC. Application forms, eligibility requirements, application procedures and a copy of the Municipal Partnership Fee for Service Grant Policy FIN. 18 are available from the Administration Department as well as on our website at www.mission.ca. The purpose of this policy is to help organizations identify their possible eligibility for a grant.

More than 4,000 lanterns lit up Fraser River Heritage Park at the 15th annual Illuminaria Festival on Sept. 13. The event was organized by Mission Association for Community Living to promote inclusiveness in the community. The evening began with performances by students at Mission Music Lessons and was followed by two rocking sets by their teachers. Nezaar and his troupe of performers put on an impressive pyrotechnics display which included a stilt-walking fire breather. A bright and colourful display of fireworks wrapped up the night. The event was a success, said MACL executive director Dawn Hein, noting volunteer staff, self advocates, community members, and students all helped to bring the night together. “We appreciate all of our volunteers and community members who made the efforts to support MACL and promote inclusion in our community at this event, especially the youth who came forward to make a positive contribution,” said Hein.

Fun, fashion and flappers The Mission Museum will be hosting a 1920s Fashion Show fundraiser on Sept. 25 at the Mission Springs Pub. There will be entertainment from dancers at the Fraser Valley Academy of Dance, and Tangerine, an all-female barbershop quartet. There will also be lots of prizes. Tickets to the event are $25 each and includes the shows, a burger, beverage, and a chance to win the door prize basket. Tickets can be bought at the Mission Museum, 33201 Second Ave., or online at missionmuseum.com. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays, and from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. Grand opening for new residential care facility Politicians, health officials and community members gathered Thursday to officially celebrate the opening of The Residence in Mission. Located on the site of Mission Memorial Hospital, The Residence is a three-storey, 128,000 sq. ft. residential care facility for citizens with complex care needs and dementia. The facility, which welcomed its first residents in April 2014, features 190 private suites and five double occupancy suites for couples. The building was designed to promote caring practices using

a person-centered approach within a homelike and non-traditional residential care environment. The facility is laid out in ‘neighbourhoods’ that house 24 to 26 residents, each with its own dining room, lounge, leisure room, and kitchen. The facility’s four secure courtyards and six large secure balconies ensure outdoor access for all residents. “This is home for our residents,” said Lois Dixon, vice-president clinical operations at Fraser Health, in a press release. “The building was designed with people in mind with the goal of promoting com-

fort, independence and a sense of belonging..” The Residence was built for $32 million. The province, through Fraser Health, contributed $9.9 million, the Fraser Valley Regional Hospital District contributed $22 million, and the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation, together with Mission Healthcare Auxiliary, contributed $335,000. With the addition of The Residence, Mission Memorial Hospital now offers an adult day program for non-residents, a respite hotel and an assisted living residence.

NOTICE OF INTENTION TO PROVIDE ASSISTANCE

Community Charter – Part 3, Division 2, Section 24 TAKE NOTICE that pursuant to Section 24 of the Community Charter, the District of Mission proposes to lease 3000 sq. ft. of space at the District owned building located at 7337 Welton Street to the Sumas Regional Consortium for High Tech (SRCTec) for the development of a Technical Centre of Excellence (TCE) at the favorable lease rate of $5 per square foot per year on a gross lease basis, meaning payments are inclusive of basic rent and property taxes. In comparison, a market rate for this space is approximately $11 per square foot per year. The District of Mission intends to lease the property for a two year term, with an option to renew for three years, with an increase to the annual base rent of no greater than ten per cent. SRCTec is a not-for-profit organization governed by an operating board of directors, including representation from the Ministry of Agriculture in relation to an agriculture venture accelerator program being run within the TCE. The role of SRCTec is to actively attract technology companies to Mission and the Fraser Valley. The TCE will function as a hub for technology startups and new technology businesses to provide mentorship and access to expertise to accelerate growth, commercialization, and technology transfer. This aligns with the British Columbia Innovation Council’s mission to build British Columbia’s economy by accelerating the growth of BC ventures through the support of entrepreneurs and tech startups. Vandals damage trees, start fire Carol Aun MISSION RECORD

Fraser River Heritage Park has been under attack by vandals over the past week. In the most recent incident on Monday afternoon, someone started a fire inside the hollow portion of a large maple tree, according to Mission Fire/Rescue Service Capt. Norm MacLeod. The fire spread to the underbrush in the area, but it was quickly knocked down by firefighters when they arrived on scene.

Park caretaker Shelly Clarkson called the fire department as soon as she was notified of the burning tree. “I didn’t want to take any chances,” she said. The fire department was on scene within minutes, and Clarkson hopes the quick response was enough to save the tree, which she estimated to be close to 100 years old. According to fire officials, the district will conduct an assessment on the tree to determine if it should be saved or removed.

Police were also called to the scene because of the suspicious nature of the fire. About an hour earlier, around 4:30 p.m.. a garbage bin near the cemetery on the south side of the park was also set on fire. Clarkson managed to grab a couple of buckets of water and put out the flames, which was contained to the bin. Four trees were also damaged by vandalism near the D’Herbomez Creek bridge in the park sometime Friday night or early Saturday morn-

ing, added Clarkson. The trees were “pretty chewed up,” according to park manager Don Brown, who doubts all the trees can be saved. ‘If we have to take it out, we will replace it with another tree,” he said. “It’s very disappointing to see the live stuff destroyed and damaged like there. There is so much care that goes into (maintaining the plants in the park).” Park staff will be keeping a closer eye on activities around the park.

Mission resident Barry Drews was presented with a commendation for service to Canada’s veterans Thursday in Vancouver. Drews is the son of a veteran and helped

get the Highway of Heroes dedications for the Trans-Canada Highway. Drews also helped organize the Memorial ride for the Fallen, which saw 1,000 motorcyclists ride from Van-

couver to Chilliwack to raise nearly $10,000 for wounded veterans. Drews is currently president of the 3rd Canadian Army Veterans Rome Unit, and is active in a number of

other veteran causes, including fundraising initiatives for the Wounded Warriors Foundation, the Military Family Resource Centre, the George Derby Centre, and Honour House.

Mission gets air quality monitoring station The Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) unveiled its newest air quality monitoring station in Mission, making it the Fraser Valley Regional District’s sixth station. The station is located next to École Mission secondary school. The FVRD has two stations in Abbotsford – near the airport and at Mill Lake Park. The others are in Chilliwack, Hope and Agassiz. Together, the FVRD stations form part of the Lower Fraser Valley air quality monitoring network, which comprises 28 permanent stations from Horseshoe Bay to Hope. The Mission station monitors a variety of air pollutants, including fine particulate matter, ground-level ozone, and nitrogen oxides, which contribute to the calculation of the Air Quality Health Index, a tool designed to communicate health messaging on air quality. It also measures meteorological parameters such as wind speed and precipitation. Air quality readings from established FVRD sites can be found at www.bcairquality.ca/ readings/ although the site does not yet include data from Mission.

Mission is celebrating Culture Days next week with numerous events. Culture Days is designed to encourage awareness, participation and engagement in the arts and culture life of communities across the country. On Sept. 26, Tap Your Feet with Boris at the Mission library from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Boris Sichon will be playing his collection of instrument in an energetic drum circle. Sichon is a musician, dancer, singer and actor who has performed in more than 40 different countries. A range of activities are being planned for on Sept. 27, beginning with the Mission City Farmers Market from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the library. There will be a special display from the Mission Community Archives called agriCulture. Learn more about the history of agriculture in Mission with story boards showing news photos and articles. There will also be artisans on site and music by Rae Dawn. The archives will also be offering a tour of its facility and interpretive routs of the Our Home Town mural. The Stave Falls Scottish Dancers will be performing at 2 p.m. and the Mission Museum will also be open and conducting historical walking tours downtown. An exhibit by Central Fraser Valley Graphics Guild called Views: Points of View and Viewpoints will be at the Mission Arts Centre. So much to talk about in this little car

driveway fuel consumption. The new 1.5L engine has eleven per cent more power, at 130hp, plus more torque at 114 lb.ft. but is 27 per cent lighter than the old engine. The

power goes to either an allnew 6-speed manual that is available on all trim levels or a new continuously variable transmission that expands the gear, ratio range by fourteen percent. What this means in terms of drivability is a better jump off the line and improved highway cruising. Because the new transmission reduces weight and friction, the fuel economy has improved by 16 per cent, which is an amazing accomplishment in such a small car. Rated at 7.0L/100km in the city and 5.7L on the highway, using the much tougher 2015 fuel standards, this represents fuel number buyers will actually be able to achieve. In addition, the suspension has been improved for more responsiveness but I found the ride a bit choppy over bumpy roads. Verdict There is so much to talk about with the Honda Fit from space to design and new engineering; it is easy to overlook the creature comforts that have been added. There is now a height adjustable drivers seats, a standard 5-inch LCD screen with backup camera and Bluetooth all on the base $14,495 DX trim. Move up one step to the $17,295 LX trim and Honda includes a huge 7-inch touch-sensitive Display Audio system and heated front seats (my favourite). There is also the $19,195 EX trim with alloy wheels, paddle shifter and moon roof, but the big news is the inclusion of the $21,295 EX-L Navi trim. This is the EX trim with leather and navigation, making the fit downright opulent. This isn’t the least expensive car in this class but on the whole it offers so much more than just a price point. Both provide a quiet, comfortable drive, not averse to a sprint when necessary, all aided by a seven-speed auto transmission that is as a smooth as a baby’s you-know-what. MacDonald, Fern We sadly announce the passing of Fern MacDonald (nee McLaren) three days before her 83rd birthday. Fern passed away peacefully on September 14th, 2014 in the Christine Morrison Hospice at the Mission hospital. Fern was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan on September 17th, 1931 – one of twelve children to Bill and Iva McLaren. Fern spent most of her early years in Hedley, B.C. where she met the star of Hedley’s baseball team, Ken MacDonald. Ken and Fern were married in 1949 and in 1951 were persuaded by people like Albert McMahon, Ken Dandy, Percy Buckle and Chuck Harrington to come and play for the Mission Aces baseball team. Ken and Fern had three boys, all born in Mission B.C. Fern was heavily involved in their activities, including all the sports they participated in. Also at this time, Fern’s sister Margaret came to live with the family and throughout the years Margaret and her husband Jim played an important role in Fern’s life. Throughout these years, Fern volunteered her time for the executive of Mission Minor Baseball, the Mission Marlins Swim Club, Mission Minor Hockey, and a later in life the Mission Curling Club. Sadly in 1973, her husband Ken died suddenly, and Fern was only 41 years of age. Fern, with her incredible strength of character and the support of her friends and family, overcame the grief and became an integral part of the Mission community. A highlight for Fern and her sister Margaret was being in Montreal in 1976 watching her son Gary win a silver medal at the Olympic Games. Fern curled, played bridge and traveled and then in 1981 met another wonderful man, Ivan Golos, whom she married in 1983. By this time Fern had three grown sons and was for-

tunate to have four new grown step-children. Fern and Ivan were lucky to have twenty-two years together of which they spent lots of time with Ivan’s twin sister Vivian Trethewey and husband Allan. Fern’s life was rich with five grandchildren and seven step-grandchildren and a recent great grandchild, along with 2 step great-grand children. We all know that Fern considered all her friends children and grandchildren to be her own as well. She truly loved and embraced family. Ivan passed away in 2005 and she was on her own again. She had her beloved dog Dani and an incredible array of family and friends to help her lead an active and enjoyable life. Fern is survived by her three sons Dale (Leslie), Gary (Jennifer), Randy (Kari-Ann), step-children, Glen, Gary (Carol), Shelley (Rudy) and predeceased by step-son Greg, along with the grandchildren and great grandchildren noted above. Fern is also survived by six brothers and sisters and many nieces and nephews. Fern was blessed with so many friends and she will be missed by them. Fern loved life to the fullest and will always be remembered as a fun loving parent, grandparent, aunt and friend. We would like to express our thanks to the Mission Hospital, especially the Christine Morrison Hospice staff who are some of the most amazing, caring, professional people the family has met. There will be a Celebration of Life held at St Andrews United Church 7756 Grand Street Mission on Friday, September 26th, 2014 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Christine Morrison Palliative Care Wing at the Mission Hosptial. BAKSICS Faye Faye Dorothy Baksics (nee Knight) peacefully fell asleep in death in her 76th year on Thursday, September 11, 2014, in Mission, BC. Predeceased by her loving husband of 50 years, Frank John Baksics. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Frank Jr. (Jennifer), Jerry (Monica), David (fiancée Julie) and Tanya (Mark), also by her siblings Garry, Mike and Holly. She was known by her ready smile, happy disposition and deep faith. Since 1969 Faye had been an active member in the congregations of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Burlington, Ont., and Agassiz and Mission, BC. Faye will be sadly missed by family and friends, whom have shown loving support in this time of loss. Listed here are just a few of his many accomplishments: joined the Volunteer fire dept. in 1951 and became chief in 1974 and retired in 1978, started with Mission ambulance in 1965 to 1990, was chairman of Mission Fire Prevention for 9 years, Mission councilor for 4 years, President of Mission Agricultural Assoc. for 4 years, director of the Senior Center for 9 years, involved with McConnell Creek Farmers Institute for 25 years and Freeman of the City of Mission in 1996. Ray and his wife Shirley loved to go camping, fishing and spending many a week at Barnes Lake in Ashcroft. PIHOWICH Allan Allan Joseph (Spike) Pihowich, 76 of Aldergrove, BC, passed away peacefully after battling numerous health problems at Abbotsford Regional Hospital, September 9, 2014 on his 53rd Wedding Anniversary, holding his wife Jean’s hand.

He was born March 24, 1938 in Edmonton, Alberta to Mike and Florence Pihowich and is survived by his sister Elnora, brothers Grant, Terry and Brent, his son Gary (Leah), daughter Norine (Todd) and grandkids; Joseph and Brandi. He spent 22 years in the Canadian Navy and 15 years with the Department of Supply and Services. He was an avid collector and a stanch supporter of The Edmonton Oilers and Edmonton Eskimos. A service was held September 15, 2014 at Aldergrove Legion and the family would like to thank the staff of the Abbotsford Regional Hospital for their tremendous care. MARCELLUS Samantha Samantha Lyn passed away Friday, September 5, 2014. She is predeceased by her uncle Luke Marcellus 1968 2006; and her grandpa John Marcellus 1948 - 2008. Samantha is survived by her sister Keysha Marcellus and her family; Marta Velarde and her family; and her boyfriend Max and his family. She also will be missed by many friends and coworkers who loved her and were a constant support for her. Samantha you will be dearly missed. Sam had a beautiful vibrant personality and loved to help people. She loved writing and playing her own music. She had a passion for learning and was studying to become a Health Care Aid.
