With teachers expected to ratify a deal to resolve the labour dispute and end the strike, it’s very likely kids will be back in classrooms Monday morning. Sooke School District superintendent Jim Cambridge said they plan to make it as normal a day as possible. “Our plan is to open as if it were the first day of September,” he said. Unlike their neighbouring district for Greater Victoria, which has had to postpone a scheduled Pro-D day for Sept. 22, SD62’s professional development day would have been this past Monday, so it should be business as usual. Teachers were voting yesterday (after the Gazette deadline) on the deal. A yes vote was expected to lead to board of education trustees meeting to ratify the agreement by today (Sept. 19). Agreement from all sides would secure an end to the strike that’s been disrupting students since the middle of June. “It’s likely that boards will approve it,” said Cambridge. All students would go back for a half day on Monday and each school will have its own startup hours and schedule from Tuesday on. West Shore RCMP Staff Sgt. Steve Wright has mixed emotions. One day before heading to Port Alice to begin the 2014 Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock, the 33-year officer said his thoughts are already with those at home, and those he’ll meet along the way. “I’m very nervous, very excited at the prospect. I am so looking forward to meeting so many people and I hope I don’t let anyone down,” he said. “It (will be an) incredible journey and it is hard to believe it is already here.” Six months after beginning training for the more than 1,000 kilometre fundraising journey from Port Alice to Victoria, the Sooke resident said his fundraising campaign has raised almost $27,000. He credits his home community and his work community in the West Shore for going above and beyond for the cause. “I find it overwhelming that I have this much support in the community. They just come through in spades,” he said. “I can’t wait to get on the road and experience the love from the people from the communities we are visiting.” Wright took a week off leading up to the Tour to get all his errands done. Amalgamation ad misleading View Royal supporters may have been given false hope Angela Cowan News Gazette staff

A quarter-page ad that ran Tuesday in a Victoria newspaper got some of the facts wrong when it declared the Town of View Royal’s intentions for a council meeting that night. The ad, purchased by the Capital Region Municipal Amalgamation Society, stated “the mayor and council of View Royal will be discussing the Amalgamation Yes request to include a non-binding referendum question to study amalgamation” at the Sept. 16 council meeting. It urged View Royal residents to attend and express their support of adding the question to November’s municipal ballot. However, when asked about the possible discussion, Coun. David Screech said the matter had already been closed. “We were just as surprised (at the ad),” he said. “It’s not on our agenda. It was already discussed at council and we decided we would stick with ‘no.’” Jennifer Cochrane, executive assistant for the Town of View Royal, confirmed late Tuesday that further discussion on the referendum ques-

John Vickers, vice-president for the society, said the wording in the ad resulted from a misunderstanding. “It was our understanding that all motions from a committee of the whole (meeting) had to be put forward in the minutes and come before council to be approved,” he said. The hiccup came because the decision had already been made in July at a previous committee of the whole meeting, said Screech, and the mention of the question in the Sept. 9 meeting arose from

previous business. The initial ‘no’ decision in July came about because council thought it was “absurd” to have only Victoria and View Royal putting the question on the ballot, said Screech. With Langford and Central Saanich saying yes to a ballot question in the intervening time between July’s meeting and Sept. 9, Coun. Ron Mattson suggested they revisit the decision in light of the new information. While not necessarily in favour of amalgamation, Mattson said “it’s essential that we give the public the opportunity to provide their views on amalgamation.” The motion to revisit the ‘no’ vote from July was defeated 3-2, and so the matter was closed, said Screech. Nonetheless, members of Amalgamation Yes showed up at the council meeting and took advantage of the public question and answer period to bring up the matter of the question again. “They just received the reply that the decision had been made to not include the question,” Screech said. acowan@goldstream gazette.com

Crime is down overall in the West Shore from last year, according to the August Mayors’ report put out by the West Shore RCMP. From Jan. 1 to Aug. 30, the West Shore was down 504 calls from the same time period in 2013, and most municipalities are following the same pattern of decrease. Langford is down 301 calls, Colwood 137 calls, and View Royal and the Highlands are down 98 and 22 calls respectively. The only anomaly is Metchosin, whose total calls increased by 58 over last year. The year-to-date increase is partly due to a busier August, which saw 17 more calls than in 2013. The numbers aren’t always clear without interpretation and context, however, said detachment spokesperson Cpl. Kathy Rochlitz. “The increase in files (in August) was generated by two individuals,” she said, with the crimes being specific to property crime and not crimes against a person. “That (kind of increase) can happen across the board in any municipality. It’s not unusual that we have a bit of a rise,” she said, adding a spike in calls is often attributed to one or two indi-

viduals or an active house in an area. In a small municipality like Metchosin that “doesn’t have a significant call volume, even small increases are readily noticed,” Rochlitz said. The report listed includes every type of call, with more than 100 categories separating varying levels of property and personal crime. “Overall violent crime in Canada is decreasing and we can see that in our area. But there’s still a lot of work to be done,” Rochlitz said. According to West Shore RCMP crime analyst Oona Olson, many calls for service the detachment receives are social in nature – those involving people – such as landlord disputes, violence in relationships, plus mental health or substance abuse calls. Almost 10 per cent of last year’s call volume was traffic related, something that’s been a top priority for the detachment, said Rochlitz. And though “reports of crime are down across all jurisdictions, our workload continues to rise,” she added. The detachment continues to work on its crime prevention programs, such as prolific offender management, the Lock it or Lose it campaign and Block Watch. The stats from the mayors’ report, while indicative of the current trend, could change with the natural ebb and flow of crime rates, Rochlitz said. “That’s policing for you. Screech first to announce View Royal mayoral bid

Coun. David Screech is the first person to throw his name into the hat for the top spot of View Royal mayor in this November’s municipal election. Screech, whose announcement last week came one day after Mayor Graham Hill announced he would not be seeking re-election, says Hill’s decision was definitely influential. “I think with him stepping down, I saw an opportunity to step up,” the councillor said. Screech brings experience to the table, having served on the municipal council since 2002, when Hill was elected mayor. He’s also View Royal’s representative on the Capital Regional District arts committee, a board member of the West Shore Parks and Recreation Society and the alternate CRD director for the town. “I’m familiar with the opera-

tions of the CRD and I know a lot of people throughout the region,” Screech said. He’s lived in View Royal for 16 years, and greater Victoria for 50. “In terms of collaborative decision making – which needs to happen through the region – I can help with that.” Owner of Gregg’s Furniture & Upholstery for the past 14 years, Screech said having supportive, long-term staff, which includes his wife and son, would give him the freedom to devote himself to the job of mayor while still being involved in his business. “My wife Jean, in particular, is very supportive,” he said. This is Screech’s first run at a higher level of office, and he’s

excited for the challenge. He said he has the utmost respect for Mayor Hill’s leadership, and hopes “to be able to carry on the good work that we have done collectively as a council during his tenure.” Screech’s campaign is already up and running, with a website in the works and plans to start knocking on doors, though no opposition has yet been declared. “It’s a little difficult until you know who your opponents are,” he said. “But I will start getting out there.” Mayor and council hopefuls have until Oct. 10 to file their intentions to run for office with the Town of View Royal. acowan@goldstreamgazette.com

It’s nearly campaign time in B.C. and nominations will soon be open around the West Shore. Candidate nomination papers will be accepted from Sept. 30 to Oct. 10 for all potential mayors, councillors and school trustees looking to be elected in the municipal election Nov. 15. Forms are available at munici-

pal offices and online for all interested individuals. You’ll need a minimum of two signatures to qualify and hopefuls are already starting to make their intentions known. Following the announcement that View Royal Mayor Graham Hill would be stepping aside after his current term, Coun. David Screech made it known he plans to run for the position, leaving at least one council position open in View Royal. Coun. Judith Cullington in Colwood, perhaps best known as one of the champions for Solar Colwood, is another local politician who will not be seeking re-election.

Candidates may run for mayor or councillor, but not for both. Not all municipalities expect to have to fill vacancies. All current Langford council members are expected to run again. Mayors who have no opposition are acclaimed, as Langford’s Stew Young has experienced multiple times since being first elected in 1992. In total, there are five mayors and 26 councillor positions in the five municipalities that make up the West Shore. Understanding fees and the new fee disclosure rules

Mutual Funds are still one of the most widely held investment vehicles in Canada for investors. What my grandfather always said is that there is no such thing as a free lunch and the same goes with mutual funds. Every fund, regardless of where you purchase it, has an embedded management fee or Management Expense Ratio (MER). Although the MER is disclosed in the prospectus of mutual funds, MERs are poorly understood. This could stem from the fact that the prospectus can be 100+ pages and the actual fees the clients pay are charged within the fund, and do not actually show up on their statements. As of July 2014, all wealth advisors must disclose relevant commissions, management fees etc. Regardless of where you have investment funds, be it an insurance company, a bank or a brokerage firm, its simply good practice for advisors to be 100% transparent with the costs and compensation surrounding an investment. Why are fees so important? Let’s assume an investor has a $200,000 mutual fund portfolio. Whether the investor is working with an advisor, banker or insurance salesperson, he or she is likely paying between $3,000 (1.5%) to $5,000 (2.5%) per annum in management fees – this is the cost just to cover the fund. There may also be commissions. For now, let’s stick with the management fees. Some MERs can be as high as 3.0%, depending on the type of fund – bonds vs. equity or a specialized fund, such as a technology fund. Some advisors may recommend the purchase of funds with a deferred sales charge or DSC, in addition to the MER. With DSC, the advisor gets paid up front (up to 5% of the value of the fund purchase) by the fund company. With DSC funds, if the client sells prior to maturity, usually 6 to 7 years, the client can pay up to 5% of the value of the sale. Generally speaking, we all understand that we pay for advice however, due to lack of transparency, many investors are unaware of how much they pay to own specific investments. The reality is that most retail investors will open their statements, and judge the value and skill of their advisor based

on ‘up = good; down = bad’. New fee disclosure rules will make it easier for investors to differentiate between advisors and assess the value they receive. Prior to the new fee disclosure rules, the costs to own investments were not disclosed on client statements. Another example of transparency is performance reporting. For example, performance against benchmarks and actual costs will show up directly on the client statements. The onus is on an investor to look a little deeper than “up = good” and “down=bad”. Metchosin fire dept. preps residents for emergencies Volunteer force offers free CPR training to residents from around the West Shore Angela Cowan News Gazette staff

The Metchosin fire department is making sure West Shore residents are prepared for any emergency by offering free CPR classes, and starter emergency kits for $35. The CPR level C course covers infant, child and adult CPR, choking and training on automated external defibrillators (AED). The department also offers general safety classes for parents with infants. The department doesn’t schedule CPR classes on specific dates, said Fire Chief Stephanie Dunlop, who also serves as emergency program co-ordinator for Metchosin. Instead, if someone’s interested, Dunlop suggests they get a group of about four or six people together and call the department to schedule a training time.

“We can do (the classes) weeknights or weekends as well,” she said. “We’re pretty flexible with time.” And for those who want to get started on building their emergency kit, the fire department has put together a small kit with an assortment of basic supplies, including water, a small Leatherman tool, flashlight, small first aid kit and ice pack. “They’re just a starter kit,” said Dunlop, adding there are many different kinds of emergency kits. For example, one designed for when residents need to stay home would differ from one used when being evacuated to a shelter. “The more important one is that grab-and-go kit,” she said. “That has different stuff like insurance papers, legal documents, medications, pet food.” The Metchosin emergency program outlines the necessities for all the different kinds of kits on their website, as well as FAQ about varying types of emergencies and how to be prepared. Housing fix a long way off On a cold night in February of this year, a team of volunteers, housing advocates and university students spread out across Greater Victoria to find out how many people were accessing shelters and other forms of temporary housing. What they found wasn’t much different from a similar count in 2011, according to Andrew Wynn-Williams, executive director of the Greater Victoria Coalition to End Homelessness: 1,167 people, including 116 children, were sleeping on cots and thin mattresses in local shelters or in motels throughout the region. “The number of families counted increases when hotels and motels are included in the facility count,” says the count’s lead researcher, Marika Albert. “For me, this means that hotels and motels are often seen as the only affordable option for families experiencing homelessness, which is deplorable and an important indication that we are far from addressing the affordable housing crisis in the region.” Many families in housing crisis can face a steep climb when they lack family support. There are a total of two shelter units available to families on a short-term basis in the entire CRD at Rock Bay Landing. And the Burnside-Gorge Community Association offers the region’s only in-person family housing assistance program. Most of the 264 families they helped last year were on the cusp of losing their homes, while one in 10 were outright homeless. Some people end up in local motels and hear little from B.C. Housing. The region hasn’t been idle. Since 2008, there have been 274 supportive housing units and 350 affordable housing units built. But it’s clear families aren’t able to access services and stable housing with anything close to a timely manner. The Coalition recommends implementing “rapid rehousing initiatives” to help in crisis situations, a move that should garner support across all levels of government. It’s also time the federal government stepped up and created a fully funded national housing strategy to play its part in the housing fix. Otherwise, families will continue to be left out on the cold.

Teachers cite a host of barriers, from parental concerns to lack of time, confidence and support from administration. So how can a teacher ease in (or jump right in) to teaching outside? Ridley suggests joining forces with fellow educators for support and advice. Mendoza also seeks out guidance from outdoor enthusiasts. Several online communities exist to help and inspire, like the popular weekly #EnviroEd Twitter chats. Organizations all across the country, including the David Suzuki Foundation, offer workshops for educators interested in taking students outside. These often include sample activities, logistical tips and advice for getting parents and administration on-board. And many of the same organizations have published excellent educational resources for teaching outdoors. The Foundation’s own Connecting With Nature guides for kindergarten through Grade 8 are full of lesson plans, step-by-step instructions and ideas for engaging local communities. So while the idea of moving science or math class outdoors might be unnerving at first, the end result is more than worth it, for the well-being of everyone involved. “If teachers are happy and connected to nature, they can pass that on to their students,” Sheppard says. “They can be the role models parents want for their children — role models the world needs.” After all, those who learn to appreciate and love nature are more likely to protect it.

‘Ghost tour’ set to light up Fort Rodd Hill Visitors can step into history, thanks to military re-enactors Angela Cowan News Gazette staff

History lessons and live theatre come together for a fascinating tour of Canadian military history at Fort Rodd Hill’s 13th annual lantern tour. Members of the Victoria-Esquimalt Military Re-enactor Association will set up scenes from varying points in Canadian military history on Saturday, Sept. 27 for visitors to observe and eavesdrop on, all while wandering the park’s hills and dales by lantern light. “It’s like a ghost tour,” says Don Thomas, events co-ordinator for the association. “You, the visitor, see the re-enactors, but the re-enactors don’t see you.” Visitors will get the chance to see Boer War veterans discuss the beginnings of the Great War, observe soldiers in tactical scenarios and perhaps experience a few surprises. “There are some really cool visuals and things that are unexpected,” says Sophie Lauro,

promotions officer for Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Site. “If you’re bringing kids, be aware that there may be loud noises.” Each year sees a new set of vignettes, so it’s a unique experience whether one is brand new to the event or a long-time veteran. Thomas, who’s been a re-enactor for close to 30 years, says the group’s members come from a wide variety of backgrounds, including ex-military, local business members and university students. Anyone interested in portraying history is welcome to join the association, he adds. The lantern tour, with its atmospheric lighting, period costumes and actors in full character, has been very popular in the past. “A lot of regular visitors to the site come for that event specifically and they bring friends every year,” Lauro says. “It’s amazing, the knowledge and passion (the volunteers and re-enactors) bring here. It’s really like you’re standing back in time and you’re eavesdropping on what’s happening.” The evening tours also give visitors the opportunity to see the historic site in a different light. “It’s done at night and has that mystique to it. It gives you a whole different

While a biennial homeless count found an increase in shelter users in Greater Victoria, the goal of reducing the number of chronically homeless in the region appears to be coming closer. A report unveiled this week at the annual general meeting of the Greater Victoria Coalition to End Homelessness held Tuesday in Langford stated many of the 1,167 individuals counted – including 116 children – on Feb. 5 of this year were only occasional users of the various temporary housing facilities. Representatives from the various service providers and stakeholder groups that make up the coalition were told that roughly 15 per cent of the people who use the various forms of shelter for temporary accommodation take up about 55 per cent of the beds over the course of a year. “The coalition started with the assumption of, ‘let’s look after the ones who are the greatest drain on the system, the greatest economic challenge, the most chronic,’ that’s what that 15 per cent number is,” said coalition executive director Andrew Wynn-Williams. The number of chronically homeless in 2008 was estimated at around 1,200. Now there are roughly 300 in that category.

co-chair of the coalition’s leadership council, said while the area of housing families in shelters is still an area of concern – the February count found 70 families in temporary housing – he is optimistic about the long-range picture. “The numbers are getting better and we’re seeing some good strong results, but we’re seeing some challenges out there. Poverty, mental health and addictions, all of those continue to drive the risk of homelessness,” he said. “The good news is there’s a recognition that first and foremost we need 350 (more) supportive housing units and that is going to take care of our chronic homeless population. That’s an achievable number when you consider where we came from.” Moving forward, the report laid out seven priority areas for the coalition: housing, communications, research, prevention, aboriginal homelessness, reintegration and operations. A new media plan comes complete with thought-provoking one-liners to be used in advertising and social media, that aims to raise awareness of the state of homelessness in the region. “That number has come down a lot,” Wynn-Williams said. “Now it’s time for us to expand our horizons and start acknowledging that affordability is also a critical driver of people on the street. They may not have addictions or mental health issues, they’re at risk because they can’t afford to live in our community.” With the vacancy rate for units less than $700 in Greater Victoria at less than one per cent, and the sheer number of units falling into that category also shrinking, some people are forced onto the street or to couch surf, he added. The shelter allowance for people on social or disability assistance is $375, which, when added to the cost of food and other expenses, can leave individuals or single-parent families in a hole at the end of the month, Wynn-Williams noted. “Eighty-five per cent of shelter users are there due to an affordability issue, and with the increase in families in our facilities count, it shows that, just like the rest of Canada, we are in an affordable housing crunch.” The figures used for the report are from 2012-13, a time frame in which less transitional or supportive housing units came on stream, he said, which may have contributed to the eight per cent overall increase in shelter users counted from the 2011 tally. After 25 years as a restaurant owner, consultant and wine educator, Micheline Ouimet’s latest venture has seen her dedication to good service translate into finding good deals on wine. The Colwood oeniphile’s

website, thewinedetective.ca, pulls current local deals and sales on wines into one place for West Shore residents to peruse. “You can find when your favourite wine is on sale,” Ouimet said. “Or maybe you’re going out to a party and want to bring a bottle, and you check the local store to see what’s good and what’s on sale.” The site, which went live in July and is free to use, is growing in popularity and grew out of a newsletter Ouimet used to send out with her wine courses that, among other things, listed local wine deals.

“Technically there was rebates and coupons for everything online except wine,” she said. The wine expert decided to put it together online in an easily accessible place and thewinedetective.ca was born. Ouimet stressed that just because a wine might be on sale doesn’t mean it’s an inferior vintage. “Sale prices have a lot more to do with storage than quality. Most countries are producing more wine than they can sell and there isn’t enough storage, so the bottles have to sell.” Ouimet, who teaches bartending at Camosun College,

wine education courses and a new mobile cocktail class, says wine must fit the occasion. When deciding which bottle to get, for example, an evening of relaxing at home will differ from pulling the cork for a special occasion. “It depends on if I’m going to eat something or not, too. That makes a huge difference,” she said. Regardless of what the moment calls for, it’s always a treat to find the perfect wine, especially for a few dollars off, Ouimet said. “My motto is drink well for less.” acowan@goldstream gazette.com

Thrifty Foods’ JDRF campaign raises big money Colwood store staff dug deep to support those with juvenile diabetes Thrifty Foods stores in Colwood, Broadmead Village and four other locations harnessed their pedal power in August in aid of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, raising more than $62,000 in the process. The fundraiser, which included in-store donations, bike-a-thon pledges and product-based donations, saw staff members at each of the stores ride stationary bikes for 24 hours – Colwood produce clerk Jason Stoke rode the entire day. “The team here really made this cause their own,” Colwood store manager Ray Gudmundson said in a release. “We have a close relationship with JDRF through our support of other events throughout the year and meeting the kids impacted by (Type 1 diabetes) has been a privilege. We also had a triathlete on our team, so we were able to witness (Stoke) ride the full 24 hours straight through.” Youth advocate and diabetic Maegan Barwis, who cheered on the Thrifty Foods Colwood team on the first day of their event, was very appreciative of their efforts and the company in general. “Getting support that’s unique to my situation with someone who understands type 1 diabetes and the challenges that I face makes all the difference,” she said. Milton Keynes, England: As we climbed into a gleaming Infiniti Q50 sports sedan, one killjoy warned the road to the Belgian Grand Prix would be like a dance – quick, quick, slow. The tour of the Infiniti-Red Bull Racing factory had us pumped and ready to roar Sebastian Vettel-like, along the UK’s motorway network to Folkestone, Kent. There we would take Le Shuttle train beneath the waves of the English Channel to France and on to Spa, Belgium. It would be a

600-kilometre drive (374 miles) and take less than six hours. The doomsayer was right, try ten hours! The aforementioned four-time F1 champ influenced the production of this car so it was a neat idea to take the sharp-looking Q50 on an extended spin to a race weekend. Darkness enveloped the road ahead but our way through Belgium was lit by the most spectacular electric storm. Ah yes, the windshield wipers performed efficiently in a downpour of Biblical proportions. We finally reached Spa, birthplace of Agatha Christie’s fictional detective Hercule Poirot, and famous for its therapeutic cold springs. By the time we arrived, we’d had enough of the cold springs from above. The inclement weather didn’t dampen our spirits as we rubbed shoulders for the next two days with the fast and the fashionable in the Formula One Paddock Club at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps. Champers was the breakfast of champions at the 2014 Belgian Grand Prix, if you had the admission price of $3,500 burning a hole in your jeans.

The navigation system ‘lady’ suggested we take the M25 the opposite way around London. Whoops. Should have ignored her. Nevertheless, this was all a blessing because the car was forced to perform in adverse conditions and its mettle/metal was truly tested. Extended time at the wheel of a 328-horsepower 3.7-litre V6 version (starts at $37,500) and a Hybrid ($10,000 more) with a 3.5-litre engine left me scratching my head about which would be my choice. Both provide a quiet, comfortable drive, not averse to a sprint when necessary, all aided by a seven-speed auto transmission that is as a smooth as a baby’s youknow-what. All-wheel-drive would be an option I would choose on either model. Interestingly, the constantly changing speed limits flashing above helped show off the predictive forward collision technology. If you trust the car ahead, the radar-controlled gizmo will govern your speed and braking automatically. In addition, lane control keeps you on the straight and narrow should you drift into that passing car you were alerted to by another warning system. Thanks to the $320 flexi pass, we rolled with ease onto the train and smirked at the lineup with the $120 tickets. About 40 minutes

The Victoria Wine Festival has assembled a seminar lineup that showcases wines from around the world. On Sept. 26, in addition to two public tastings showcasing more than 200 wines, participants will have an opportunity to explore wines and winemaking in more depth at three wine seminars. Among the seminars: The Loire: Welcome to the Garden of France at noon will look at many of the sub regions of the Loire Valley, discovering how the wines are influenced by climate, winemaking style, grape variety and complimentary food pairings. Each of the six wines will be distinctly different, appealing to a broad range of palates. Jane Ferrari from Yalumba at 2:30 p.m. Ferrari is one of the industry’s most informative presenters, hailing from Australia’s oldest family-owned winery. A sampling of eight wines will demonstrate why Yalumba

wines are famous in Australia and around the world. Australia vs California, a Comparison of Two Hemispheres at 6 p.m. Eight wines will represent the ultimate expression of each region’s unique terroir and micro climate. Living on Vancouver Island for more than 20 years, Boomer Jerritt is no stranger to the beauty of the West Coast. A professional photographer, Jerritt recently published his third book, Vancouver Island Imagine, featuring photos from around Vancouver Island. Originally a fine artist doing portrait work, Jerritt decided he needed a change. He took up photography. He graduated from the now-defunct Western Academy of Photography in Victoria in 1990. The book features many outdoor scenes from the Island, but the majority of the photos include people doing activities, such as lawn bowling in Colwood, surfing in Tofino, fishing in Campbell River or golfing at the Victoria Golf Club in Oak Bay.

Professional photographer Boomer Jeritt. “I enjoy shooting recreation, lifestyle photography,” said Jerritt, adding he wants people who look at the book to be able to put themselves into the photos. While he does not have a favourite among them, Jerritt enjoys looking through the book because it reminds him of

experiences he had while taking the shots. “Each photo reflects me being out there and doing my thing,” he said. Jerritt worked on the book with freelance writer Peter Grant, who curated the photos and wrote the text. Grant was born and raised in Oak Bay. After 35 years, he moved to

The 14-year-old competed for the first time in the World Martial Arts Games in Richmond earlier this month, winning gold in the judged self-defence category and bronze in both point sparring and continuous sparring, an event much like kickboxing. “I’ve been to lots of tournaments, but this was top-notch, amazing,” he said back home in Langford. “I was just very glad to compete for my country and be at one of the biggest stages next to the Olympics. Just getting a medal is the cherry on top.” The ninth annual

tournament – the first was held in Victoria in 2006 – was the first for WMAG as a member of TAFISA, a ‘Sport for All’ organization supported by the International Olympic Committee. Approximately 180 athletes from a dozen or so countries competed in Richmond. “It’s truly amazing. It shows what sport can do to bring countries together,” Ickovich said of the event, which inspired a real sense of camaraderie and celebration not unlike the Olympics. Ickovich, a Spencer middle school Grade 9 student and first dan black belt who trains in the Shotokan style under sensei Raj Basi at Canada’s Best Karate in Langford, competed in the 13and 14-year-old black belt division. A strapping six-footfour, he was easily the tallest in his category and used his size to good advantage. The self-defence event, which sees

the athlete work with an attacking partner, includes six moves which the pair must first do slow, then fast. Ickovich received marks of 9.6 across the board, best in the field. Point sparring is somewhat like kickboxing, with punches and kicks, but the action stops when points are scored. Ickovich easily won his bronze medal match 7-2, after nearly making it to the final. Down 6-0 midway through the semifinal, he charged back to make it 6-6 and force sudden death overtime, where he lost by one point. Ickovich won bronze with a unanimous decision in his final continuous sparring match, after losing a split decision in the semifinal. Fighters go two 90-second rounds and judges determine round and match winners based on connected punches and kicks, technique and movements. “I’m hoping to get back for the next one

… and this time I want to go for a sweep,” Ickovich said. As for keeping the Olympics in his sights,

Putting together a roster in junior hockey can be tricky, especially when your team is at the bottom of the ladder. Junior B hockey clubs must often wait to know which of their stars will return until those players are released by B.C. Hockey League Jr. A teams, which are in a similar situation waiting for Major Junior teams in the Western Hockey League to make their final cuts. For head coaches like Brian Passmore of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League’s Westshore Wolves, the early days of the season can be stressful. “It’s actually a bit more crazy this year, because we started a week earlier and the BCHL (is starting) a week later,” he said of the league schedules, (MJHP TZY \JJPQ^ Ć^JWX which affect the roster deadlines.

Nonetheless, Passmore and company are off to the best start in the history of the young franchise. Heading into Wednesday night’s game against the Peninsula Panthers (which ended after the Gazette deadline), the Wolves sat 4-1 atop the league’s South division. “We’ve been able to get a lot of returning guys back and have been gelling pretty quickly,” the coach said. “We’ve done some things well, like our pursuit of the puck, we’ve been on it quickly. We have an offensive team with a number of guys who have played together for a while.” Homegrown players have figured greatly in the Wolves success so far, Passmore said, with 15 or so Juan de Fuca Minor Hockey Association grads in the lineup. And while veterans Kyle Richter (team-leading four goals and eight assists), Brett Lervold (4-610), Kayle Ramsay (2-5-7) and Corey Peterson (2-46) are leading the attack most nights, the large number of newcomers to the team have fit in nicely, he said. “The rookies have come in and provided us with (a solid effort). The guys we’ve brought in are really responsible players and they’ve blended well with the veterans.” Backstopping the team are a pair of rookies, Chris Smith, 18, and Riley Welyk, 17. They’ve shared the duties so far and Passmore pointed out the team really doesn’t have a number 1 goaltender at this point. “Coming into the season we didn’t have much time to figure that out, so right now it’s week to week,” he said. The two youngsters have given the team a chance to win every game, Passmore said. That includes last Saturday’s 4-3 loss to the Oceanside Generals, when Welyk stopped 28 of 32 shots. After giving up a fourth goal 5:37 into the third period, he settled down and saw his teammates rally for a pair of goals and nearly force overtime. While the Wolves are among the top-scoring teams in the league, they’re also one of the most penalized, a sign they’re not going to shy away from the rough stuff. While Passmore said more work needs to be done on the penalty kill and power play units, he has a good idea of the tone he wants set by his team. “We play a hard game and we’re skating well as a group. We want to be known as a tough team to play every night.” The Wolves play their home games on Wednesday nights in the comfortable confines of The Q Centre in Colwood. They take on Kerry Park in Mill Bay tomorrow night (Sept. 20) then have a chance to get back at Oceanside, hosting the Generals on Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. editor@goldstreamgazette.com

Rebels’ QB wins second award despite loss Hunter Lake passed and ran with heart vs. Broncos He tried to do it all to help his Westshore Rebels beat the Kamloops Broncos last weekend at Westhills Stadium. Quarterback Hunter Lake’s mighty effort fell just short, as the Rebels lost 24-14, but he was rewarded this week by being named the B.C. Football Conference’s B.C. Lions Offensive Player of the Week for a second time this season. Lake threw for 381 yards, completing 21 of 41 passes, and two touchdown passes, to Griffin Dear and Jordan Rodinsky. Lake also ran 10 times for 115 yards as the home team tried valiantly to get back into the win column. The Rebels, now 2-5 on the season, head to Kelowna this weekend to take on the leagueleading Okanagan Sun (6-1). With the final playoff berth still up for grabs and three games left, the Rebels will need at least two wins to overtake the Vancouver Island Raiders (3-4). The Rebels play the last-place Valley Huskers next weekend in Chilliwack then finish off with a game in Nanaimo against the Raiders that could well decide fourth spot. Victoria Mariners premier baseball team is hosting the inaugural Zack Downey Tournament at Layritz Park. The event commemorates Langford native Downey, who was a Mariner when he was diagnosed with cancer two years ago and died in June. The Mariners have split into two teams, with other B.C. Premier Baseball League teams, Victoria Eagles, Nanaimo Pirates, Parksville Royals and Coquitlam Reds also competing. The six-inning games began Thursday and play continues today with the Reds facing Mariners 1 at 5 p.m. today (Sept. 19). On Saturday, Mariners 2 play the Royals and Reds at 8 and 10:15 a.m., respectively, while the Eagles play Mariners 1 at 5 p.m. Saturday. The Victoria Grizzlies are ready. Days away from the start of a brand new year, head coach and general manager Brad Knight said the Colwood-based team is already putting in the work for an opportunity to take another shot at the RBC Cup. It all starts with game one, he said. “We have lots to learn as a group, from the coaching staff right down to the backup goaltender. But you know what, we are excited to get started,” Knight said. “That is the most important thing, we just want to get a stake in the ground and start our season.” Knight, who replaced Craig Didmon who left the team for personal reasons, said despite a high turnover on the squad, the character of the personnel they have gathered will ensure the Grizzlies won’t be lacking for leadership. “We brought in 15 captains or

former captains, old, young and new. All of a sudden you have got guys who understand how a dressing room works. Everyone files in,” he said. “There are guys in our room, too, who don’t have a letter on their jersey but lead by example … I think we will be fine.” Knight has no predictions for the season other than the Grizzlies will compete every night with a singular focus. “We want to make the playoffs. There is a big dance at the end of the regular season and we just want a ticket so we can attend. We just want a chance. Once you’re in the post season (we) have the integrity and the workmanship to be successful.” There are a lot of games to go before then. The season kicks off in Chilliwack this weekend with the third annual Bauer BCHL Showcase, a two-game tournament where players perform in front of hundreds of scouts from across the hockey world. “Everyone is there – it’s an opportunity for us to introduce our league and introduce our roster to the teams and it’s a thrill, a great weekend, a real positive,” Knight said. “Kids get an opportunity to showcase

Buying a first home is only going to happen to a couple or an individual once in their lifetime. With housing prices on the West Shore and Greater Victoria flatlining, for the most part, it means first-time home buyers have to be as close to right as possible when they make their choice. Except in rare cases, the days of flipping a home and making some money toward the next purchase are gone, at least for the time being. Langford-based mortgage broker Darrell McCollom knows that fact well and takes a pragmatic approach to the housing market. Having been in the business for 25 years, he’s seen several buying cycles come and go. And with lending rules tightening up in the past few years, he’s seeing a lot more young clients hear ‘no’ than ‘yes’ than in the past. When young clients walk through his door, he tries to determine where they’re at in life and get a good sense of their longer-term plans. “When I counsel my clients, I encourage them to buy the house you’re going to be wanting not now, but 10 years from now,” he says. “You’ve got to be very clear about where you’re going, and whether your future involves kids, cars, boats.” While the instant gratification trend that has gripped the younger generations is a boon to the economy, it can also be a detriment for people looking to get out of renting and into their first home.

The newer small-lot homes that have been built to be affordable on the West Shore can be great for the fact that no major repairs can be expected anytime soon. But with that affordability comes the tendency to want to get all the toys, which take up space and render the home too small fairly quickly, McCollom says. “The ‘kids’ have to start to live within their means. The house is central – the backbone of your family is where you are. Maybe that means giving up the big-screen TV or the vacation in Cancun.” Lisa Verwolf, senior manager of lending services for Island Savings Credit Union, tells a similar story reflecting on her 35 years in the banking industry. Staff in their branches do their best to “coach” first-time buyers through the process of buying a home, she says. “People need to have some real-

For new immigrants to Canada, finding food and ingredients from home can be difficult. This Saturday (Sept. 20), they will be given the opportunity to learn about food security and healthy eating in Canada at the third annual Multicultural Food and Health Fair. “It’s about adapting to the new practices or norms around food in their new

country,” said Jennifer Almeida, event coordinator of the Victoria Immigrant and Refugee Centre Society, who is putting on the event. Almeida, originally from Malaysia, said immigrants often divert from their original diets. The event will feature multicultural vendors set up with food samples and food to buy and eat. “The main purpose is to promote healthy eating and food security to new immigrants, and for the local

people to have a flavour of ethnic food,” said Almeida. In addition, there will be dance performances from different nationalities, door prizes and a children’s area. In the fair’s first year, there were 400 to 600 people; last year the number doubled, and Almeida said they are expecting even more people this year.
