The 69th annual Rock Creek and Boundary Fall Fair was special because it was also the 100th birthday celebration of 4-H in British Columbia. Tim Hus came on Saturday night with his Canadian Cowboy Concert and Charlotte Diamond was there with Four Hugs a Day on Sunday. There were horse rides for the kids by Sunshine Riding, mutton busting and children’s farm games. And of course there were the 17th annual lawnmower races, this year expanded to include a remote control car race too. Boundary Minor Hockey stepped up to run bingo. The Marron Valley Drill Team was there, eight riders from 12 to 16 years old providing a great highspeed show in the arena. According to mother Linda Brooks, the Rock Creek Fair is considered the highlight of their season. At the opening ceremony, all the local 4-H members and their leaders gathered in front of the dais to recite the 4-H pledge and lead the singing of Oh Canada. Guests welcoming the Saturday crowd were MLA Linda Larson, RDKB Area E Director Bill Baird, Art Harfman (who was recently made a 4-H life member) and fair association president Lincoln Blaine Blaine called this the biggest and best little fair in B.C. “My family has been involved with this organization since it’s inception after the Second World War,” Blaine said. “I have per-

Teachers to vote on deal ALL CRAIG LINDSAY

A tentative deal has been struck between the BC Teachers’ Federation and the government in the teachers’ strike. Negotiations between representatives from the BCTF and BCPSEA (BC Public School Employee’s Association, the group which bargains for the government with the teachers’ union) and mediator Vince Ready went on until late in the night on Monday. When Ready emerged, he announced the tentative settlement. No further details were given such as whether and when teachers would vote on the deal and when school would return. “We don’t have a lot of details,” said Norm Sabourin, president of the Boundary District Teachers’ Association. “There is a tentative deal signed. There were five days of intense bargaining and in the wee hours of the morning they completed a deal.” When he spoke to the Gazette Tuesday morning, Sabourin said he had only seen a part of the deal and couldn’t comment on the details. “The two sides are still working today banging out the details and then the information will be sent out to the teachers in the province,” he said. “We’ll have to then educate ourselves on the deal and the vote will be on Thursday.” Sabourin expects the results of the teacher’s vote to either accept the deal or not would come Thursday night. He further predicted that it would likely take two days to get schools ready, which would mean a likely Tuesday return to school. “I don’t know what was agreed upon,” he said. “If it all ratifies, I’d assume the latest it would start would be Tuesday.” A post on the Grand Forks Secondary School Facebook site stated that: “It appears likely that students could be back on Monday but we are waiting for details on what may happen and whether any adjustments will be made to the semester length.” School District 51 superintendent Kevin Argue told the Gazette he wasn’t sure when school would return and wouldn’t know until the deal was set. He added that any decision to adjust the school length would be made at the provincial level by the Ministry of Education. “We’re very excited and I’m really pleased that

it came to a negotiated settlement,” he said. “This is only the second time this has happened between the government and the BCTF. I’m really thankful to both bargaining teams for making it happen. Vince Ready is an amazing person in that he got this to happen.” Last week, a group of local teachers showed up at the regular school board meeting and serenaded the trustees with a song about the strike. In addition to the song, several teachers including Sabourin spoke up during comment period to urge the board to support the teachers and speak against the government. Later in the meeting, trustee Dave Reid handed out a press release from the BC School Trustees Association (BCSTA) titled “advocacy update.” The release stated that, “We appeal to both sides to move beyond their current positions to make meaningful and real concessions with the assistance of mediator Vince Ready. If the parties will not make the necessary moves to achieve a negotiated settlement, BCSTA strongly encourages a cooling off period that would include a public third party report and non-binding recommendations.” Sabourin, as well as local teacher David Dunnet, both jumped on the fact that the release, which the local school board supports, does not urge the government to agree to binding arbritration as suggested by the BCTF. This tells me that the SD51 board of trustees supports the government’s stance, said Dunnet. “This is an insult.” “This shows you’re not going to fight for us,” added Sabourin. “This is terrible for morale. You guys have to move the government. This is a copout.” Sabourin urged the board to fight for the teachers. “We need you as trustees and district management here to put the message out in a very hard and clear way. “I hope you take a very hard line on this and demand this Liberal government set binding arbitration in order to get schools open and kids back.”

4-H and farming Art Harfman at the opening of the 2014 Rock Creek and Boundary Fair I believe a man’s greatest possession is his dignity and that no calling bestows this more abundantly than 4-H and farming. I believe hard work and honest sweat are the building blocks of a person’s character. I believe farming, despite its’ hardships and disappointments is the most honest and honourable way a man can spend his days on this earth. I believe 4-H and farming nurtures the close family ties that make life rich in ways that money cannot buy. I believe our children are learning values that will last a lifetime and can be learned in no other way. I believe 4-H and farming provides education for life and that no other occupation teaches so much about birth, growth and maturity in such a variety of ways. And I believe many of the best things in life are indeed free… The splendour of a sunrise, the rapture of the open spaces and the exhilarating sight of the land greening each spring. I believe that true happiness comes from watching our crops ripening in the field, our children growing tall in the sun, our whole family feels the pride that springs from their shared experience. I believe that by my toll I am giving more to the world than I am taking from it—an honour that does not come to all men. I believe my life will be measured ultimately by what I have done for my fellowman and by this standard I fear no judgement. I believe when a man grows old and sums up his days he should be able to stand tall and feel pride in the life he has lived. I believe in 4-H and farming because it makes all of this possible.

We need to recognize strengths Editor, The Times: Greenwood is a tourist town with the potential to become a retirement town. This is a fundamental reality, which must be accepted as such if there is to be any hope for Greenwood’s future. On any given day during the spring, summer and autumn months, there is a steady trickle of sightseers driving by or wandering through the town’s historic neighbourhoods, absorbing its scruffy charm and connecting with a sense of its rugged past. A connection to the past is a thing sadly lost in a world rushing toward an uncertain future, and it’s a loss felt most deeply by a generation now moving into retirement. The “Baby Boomers” grew up in a time of dramatic social change, spearheaded by their own idealism, defined by a love of nature, simplicity and peace. Though their idealism was

largely compromised by the requirements of adulthood and the realization that greed and indifference fuelled the economic model upon which they depended for survival, it was never snuffed out. Now, as they wander, starry-eyed, through Greenwoods streets, they see this tattered jewel set among rolling hills and forests, and some, in this deluded state think, “What a lovely place this would be to live...” and a few actually act on that thought. Three or four years later, when reality sets in, the “For Sale” signs go up. This is why real estate is so much cheaper in Greenwood than virtually anywhere else in the province; why more people want out than in, why the saying, “You buy in Greenwood, you die in Greenwood” rings true. This could change, but it would take an attitude shift. Greenwood is too deeply lodged in the 1950s to ever be moved in the 21st century (with the

exception of that hideous cellphone tower), nor should it, that would defeat the purpose. But if we could just move our attitudes forward a decade or two, it would make this town a much less hostile place for the delusional idealists upon whom our future depends. That’s a tall order, insurmountable perhaps. We need a wake-up call. We have to stop hitching our hopes to every pump and dump mining company that wanders into town with a plan to leverage our resource history into a run-up on the Venture Exchange. There’s no future in that, or any other resource based industry that simply wants to take what we have and sell it to the highest bidder. We need to recognize our strengths; our history and peaceful, natural surroundings. We need to start seeing what the starry-eyed idealists who wander our streets see. If we can do that, the rest will follow. Curtis Chamberlain, Greenwood

community members and staff and we share your sense of frustration and disappointment with the current labour dispute between the Government of British Columbia and the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation (BCTF). As trustees we are deeply concerned by the effects of this unsettled labour dispute on the learning and social/emotional well-being of our students. We believe a continuation of this dispute will have significant short and longterm negative impacts on our students and the public education system. Our primary role as trustees is as advocates for the students of School District 51 in support of their learn-

ing and well-being. We support our students and teachers in classrooms through the priority decisions we make in the allocation of the public education funds we receive from the Ministry of Education. The SD51 Board of Education wants an immediate end to the current labour dispute and reopening of our schools. Our board strongly encourages both parties to come to an immediate settlement through a mutually agreed method of either negotiation, mediation or arbitration. As a sole proprietor, you are indispensable

When you own and run your own business, you’re responsible for all aspects of the business. What would happen if you became seriously ill or died? Your business would lose its key person and your income source may disappear. There may not be enough income to manage all the business liabilities if you died. Creditors would press for immediate payment, and accounts receivable might become uncollectible. If you die or become ill, your family would face three alternatives: 1. They could continue the business, requiring family members to have the ability and experience to run your business, sufficient cash after debts are paid and the ability to retain your customers. 2. your family carry out your plans for the business if you were to become critically ill or die - for example, life insurance can provide funds to buy the business under a purchase agreement, and disability insurance can provide income if you become disabled. Critical illness insurance can help you pay off debts, stabilize your credit position, offer cash values or loan options or establish a fund for personal income at retirement, independent of the business.
