Burnaby to recognize 10 Local Heroes To be honoured Oct. 20 at city hall Wanda Chow

Burnaby city hall will recognize 10 citizens for their advocacy and volunteer work Oct. 20. The annual Local Hero Awards honour those who have contributed to the community’s well-being over an extended period of time in numerous ways. The city received a total of 14
nominations of which 10 were chosen. They include: • Farida Bano Ali: For almost two decades, she has worked to build understanding, collaboration and engagement between cultures and faiths and to raise money for mental health and community wellness projects. She is a director of the Multi-Faith Action Society, a chairperson on the Muslim Advisory Committee for the Ministry of Children and Family Development, chair of the B.C.
Muslim Association’s women’s council, and a member of the B.C. RCMP diversity advisory committee. • Flavia Crema: An active volunteer with the Burnaby Art Gallery for 19 years, where she helps prepare and coordinate new exhibits, she is also a longtime volunteer at S. Helen’s Parish. • Ernest Maitland: After several years as a Burnaby Public library trustee, he has stayed involved as a champion of home library On Nov 15

As the provincial government and the B.C. Teachers’ Federation returned to the bargaining table late last week, striking teachers at Gilmore elementary were basking in the support of students and parents. Parents at the North Burnaby school staged a “sit out” Friday afternoon amidst picketing teachers. Lisa Servedio said she and fellow Gilmore parents Amy Mazzone and Cathy Hill came up with the idea while their kids were playing together. They worked the phones and emails and managed to get a few dozen people out bearing handmade signs and treats. “The message is education, period,” Servedio said. “We support our teachers, we’re really lucky to have them,” added Mazzone. “I think it’s a gift to be able to teach and we shouldn’t take that gift for granted.” Mazzone noted that she’s facing the challenge of trying to introduce math and phonics to her six-yearold on her own without any related training or background. see ‘I DON’t thINk’, A3
