Hill, 79, made it official this week. “I’ve had a long and varied career, but this has been the best chapter by far,” he said in a statement. It’s been a long and varied career indeed. Born in Staffordshire, England, Hill trained in metallurgy before moving to Canada to work in the labs of mining company Cominco. An industrial accident changed the direction of his career and he moved on to senior computing positions in both the public and private sectors, including the RCMP, Public

Community grant program has measurable impact West Shore RCMP contributes to the area it serves Angela Cowan News Gazette staff

The deadline to apply for the RCMP’s twice-yearly community grant is fast approaching. Organized by the Community Policing Advisory Committee, the grant program provides local groups with up to $500 for projects or initiatives focused on public health and safety, prevention of drug and alcohol use, reducing crime and supporting youth, senior or at-risk populations. Since the program was established in 2011, 23 grants worth about $8,000 have been awarded to a diverse range of groups in the community, says West Shore Cpl. Kathy Rochlitz, a committee member. “We’ve given money towards the purchase of sporting equipment, healthy snacks for a Friday night teen drop-in, purchasing safety equipment for skateboarding teams, supplies for a grief support group for youth and started a gardening group at one of the schools,” she says. Having food available also brought in some kids who may

not have otherwise come, Cooper adds. The event quickly grew, with leaders teaching the teens how to cook healthy meals and even how to grocery shop and budget for food. Though the original grant money has long been used up, she says cooking classes are still held

at least once a month. “It made us realize there was a need and now we make that part of our program.” The grant program also made quite an impact at the Juan de Fuca 55-Plus Activity Centre, which received a grant to pur-

chase board games for a new games day on Saturdays. “For a lot of our members, this is their only social outlet and weekends can get very lonely,” says Ruth Reynolds, past-president of the centre. “(The grant) gave it a really good kick start,” adds Norene Ritchot, entertainment chair. “We were able to serve lunch and it definitely brought them in to start with.” The games day was so successful, that now, two years later, there are at least two games days a month. Ritchot says she doesn’t even have to be there anymore. “(The members have) really taken ownership of it.” Rochlitz says the committee tries to “spread the wealth” around the community as much as possible and has tried to make the application process simple. “We want this to be easy and accessible,” she says. Projects designed to meet a specific need in a school or community are more likely to be accepted than large, non-specific applications. The application deadline is Sept. 26. Colwood council race nets former councillor Don Descoteau News Gazette staff

A former councillor and mayoral candidate seeking change in the municipality has put his name into the ring for Colwood council. Paul “Buddy” DeVito, who was on council from 1996 to 1999, when he lost the mayoral race to Beth Gibson, told the Gazette his decision followed calls from the community encouraging him to run again. “Workers and developers and people from various walks of life are asking if I was going to run,” he said. “So I talked to my wife

and she said, ‘let’s go for it.’” DeVito, who in 2006 spoke in favour of a 29-storey condominium tower near Royal Roads University that was never ultimately built, claims he has no special agendas and no “pet groups” to be beholden to. He plans to run a “modest campaign” and show up at all the all-candidates meetings he can. Having won and lost before, DeVito is prepared for whatever might happen. “Losing an election is a temporary disappointment. Fort Rodd Hill hosts throwback car show this Sunday News Gazette staff

It’s the year of the Triumph at the 20th annual English Car Affair in the Park. Put on by the Old English Car Club of B.C. at the Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic site, the show begins Sunday morning (Sept. 14) with a blast of the bagpipes and celebrates all things English in the automotive sense. There are already more than 100 cars preregistered, from Jaguars to Austin Healeys to Bentleys. Shining proudly around the maypole will be this year’s featured car: the Triumph. Ubiquitous in such British television series as the original 1960s Avengers, Mr. Bean and Monty Python’s Flying Circus, Triumphs are crowd favourites.

The collection, more than 20 at last count, is sure to be a hit at Sunday’s show. Also set to entertain and produce some fierce competition is the ‘Italian Job’ relay. Taking a bit of fun from the bank heist movie, the handful of Minis at the show line up with their ‘boots’ open, and teams relay (painted) bricks of gold from piles on the green to the car to see who can make their getaway first. As well, Colwood Mayor Carol Hamilton will award a prize basket for her favourite car in the show and there are prize draws for car owners who preregister. The passion and love for English cars is palpable at the event, says Sophie Lauro, promotions officer for Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse. “When you get a chance to speak with owners of vehicles

like that, they’re so passionate,” she says. “To be able to bring (a car) back to its authentic state, I think that’s really what comes out at shows like this. It really entices people to come.” Lauro has been involved with the show for the past few years and says the turnout has been great every year. “Year after year people come back and they never get tired of coming here. I’m always amazed to see how shiny and beautiful and well-kept those vehicles are.” The show runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and is included in the admission price for Fort Rodd Hill. The Countess will have the chance to view common areas of the home, speak to longtime volunteers in the kitchen and meet several families who have stayed at Jeneece Place. The visit is a great honour, Hughes said. “We’re just thrilled that we were chosen. I do believe the Earl and Countess have a particular interest in children and children’s health, and Jeneece Place has such a wonderful history. It’s quite exciting.” The Countess and lieutenant governor arrive at 10:30 a.m. for the private tour of the home. The Children’s Health Foundation, formerly the Queen Alexandra Foundation, has been helping children on the Island since 1927. It owns and operates Jeneece Place, a home for families to stay when they’ve had to travel to Victoria for children’s medical reasons. “I can’t even imagine what a family must go through,” Hughes said of the trauma of a pediatric emergency. “Whether it’s a premature birth or even a car accident, the first thought is to go to the hospital. You don’t think of anything after that.” Families have enough on their plates to worry about without trying to find a hotel room, she said, not to mention the financial strain. “Some of our families couldn’t

Hoops mania growing on West Shore Community basketball targets newcomers, experienced players alike Don Descoteau News Gazette staff

A group of avid hoops fans and active volunteers are hoping to keep the momentum going for the Westshore Basketball Association. Entering its third year of existence, the association is looking to break the 100-player mark when it holds its annual registration night next Friday (Sept. 19) from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Rotary gazebo across from The Q Centre at West Shore Parks and Recreation. “Every year we’ve run, we’ve experienced growth,” said Brad Lidstone, co-director of the association with Curt Spaven. “We had seven teams and 80 kids playing last year and we’re hop-

ing for 10 teams this year.” A Timbits soccer-inspired initiation program called Westshore Rain offers fun-based skills development for kids aged six through nine. It’s separated into nine-week chunks, with the idea to give younger players, especially those without basketball experience, a chance to try the sport out to see if they like it. As players get older they move into age categories: under11, U-13, U-15 and U-18, on teams that play in the Victoria and District Basketball Association night leagues. Once-a-week practices begin later this month and the game schedule runs from mid-October to just before spring break. While many of the older players also play on their school teams, Lidstone says, there’s plenty of room for first-time players to join in, no matter what their age. “It’s nice for parents to know there’s different options for their kids,” he said. “We try and keep our sport as affordable as we can.”

Lidstone, who also coaches girls basketball at Belmont secondary, said the night league is also a good development system for school teams. Young players learn skills, sportsmanship and team-building that become more important as they move up the competitive ladder. “We want to build that base of the pyramid as broad as we can, so the upper levels have more players coming up. It’s great to make our school teams competitive.” The WBA also holds skills camps at the Christmas and spring breaks, as well as summer and sends teams to out of town tournaments. The association uses school gyms for games and practices and is hopeful the teachers’ strike will be settled by the time it starts. Lidstone said. If not, opening practices may be held outside. Running for office a noble endeavour This week’s official announcement from Graham Hill that he is not running for a fifth term as mayor of View Royal, can be seen as the unofficial kickoff to the 2014 municipal election campaign on the West Shore. With his trademark wit and passion for his community, Hill, who succeeded Bill Camden in 2002 and beat out two other candidates for the top job, helped put the tiny municipality on the map in the region over the past 12 years. His successor, whether it is someone already on council or someone from outside the circle as Hill was initially, will have large shoes to fill. They’ll also have somewhat of a clean slate to start with. Councils are fluid things, changing almost out of necessity every few years. Without new blood injected at each opportunity to do so, councils can stagnate and grow tired. The fresh ideas and approaches of newcomers can be the breath of fresh air needed to revitalize such elected bodies. It can be a double-edged sword when a talented councillor decides to challenge the incumbent mayor for their job. In either result, the community often loses an effective representative at the council table. When the mayor steps down, as Hill is doing and Sidney’s Larry Cross is after two terms, the door swings wide open for individuals to step through, to serve their communities in perhaps the most meaningful way. We sometimes worry about the lack of challengers to mayors – Langford’s Stew Young and Saanich’s Frank Leonard have had few challengers over their 22 and 18 years in office, respectively – but acknowledge that satisfaction among the populace is also an illustration of democracy at work. We appreciate the efforts of our elected officials, who take on varying workloads and generally do so without complaint. At the same time we look forward to seeing what this year’s crop of candidates around the West Shore bring to the table, and hope all five municipalities are improved as a result of wellcontested elections in November.

Amalgamation study vote could improve communication The ongoing conversation over amalgamation has recently and suddenly evolved into a matter at the forefront of matters for municipal councils. It is being fuelled by strong statistical evidence from an Angus Reid poll. That research showed that 89 per cent of residents polled are in favour of including a nonbinding referendum question on the civic ballot this November, inquiring as to whether a regional amalgamation study should be conducted. With only two months until the elections, municipal councils cannot ignore the results of this convincing survey. The population of the Capital Region District, approximately 350,000, is spread unevenly amongst 13 municipalities, each with its own diverse demography and geography. Given the complex challenges our region faces with sewage treatment, transportation planning, sustainable urban development, etc. the timing for a comprehensive study on amalgamation couldn’t be better. The recommendations and conclusions of the study may prove to be invaluable to opening a regional dialogue on responsible and effective regional governance

Even if the results of the referendum question determine that a study need not be conducted, the important issue of regional governance will receive improved attention and discussion, which can only be beneficial to all municipalities in the region. The debate over the positive and negative implications of amalgamation should be temporarily set aside, and the positive effects of increased discussion of regional governance and decision-making should be lauded. Syntal Products has closed its doors, only months after the introduction of a controversial provincewide recycling stewardship program. The 16-year-old business, located on Keating X Road in Central Saanich, accepted thousands of tons of used residential plastic from around the Capital Region and used an environmentally friendly process to convert the scrap plastics into all-plastic lumber. “Early in July, we began informing people we would be closing and told them to stop bringing their plastics to us,” said owner Brian Burchill. “As of Aug. 15, the last of the employees were laid off and we closed our doors for good.”

The closure, Burchill said, was due to the fact that the province’s new Multi-Material B.C. program started diverting about 60 per cent of the plastics coming into Syntal to other recycling companies. MMBC is a residential recycling program that came into effect this spring through regulatory changes at the Ministry of Environment. Under its stewardship plan, MMBC is expected to ensure approximately 75 per cent of residential recyclables in B.C. are recycled within three years. The cost of this service has been shifted from municipalities onto business, although critics like the Canadian Federation of Business argue the change amounts to an indirect tax on business, which is passed on to consumers to cover those costs. “Because about 60 per cent of the material I normally would have brought in was gone, there was no way I could find enough of the right types of plastics to make up the difference,” Burchill said. “The company was no longer viable and I sold our assets

to a recycling operation in Winnipeg.” Burchill was initially optimistic about the MMBC program. “A lot of it sounded like it was based on extended producer responsibility and I thought, ‘Great, if the manufacturer has to step up and deal with the end of life of these products, they’ll build them out of better plastics.’ But as time went on, I started getting different impressions of what was coming.” After a lot of research and inquiry, Burchill discovered his company was categorized as a processor of scrap plastics, and MMBC catered to collectors. “My hands were tied,” he said. Burchill, who met with Saanich South MLA Lana Popham last month to discuss the closure of his business, calls the MMBC program a legislated monopoly. Popham agreed. “The B.C. Liberals are killing small businesses in the recycling sector by gifting a monopoly over residential recycling to a handful of megacorporations,” she said. editor@goldstreamgazette.com

Joined by members of the Victoria Fish and Game Protective Association, staff at Canadian Tire in Langford are launching their store’s new Pro Hunt Shop with a special event tomorrow (Sept. 13). Canadian Tire has been putting the expanded department into select stores across Canada for about a year, says Langford owner and operator, Tim Curry. Beyond the city limits, out on the highway, heading south it handled the road well, with enough get up and go for good passing power when needed. It’s quite roomy for a small car. There’s room for three in the back seat as long as those passengers are not of a larger body type, if I may delicately put it that way. If you are of a larger body type, there is plenty of room in the trunk, if you desperately need a ride at that exact moment. (Just kidding.) But it does tell you the trunk is also roomy! Verdict: No complaints. For a sub-compact, you get great tech options, great fuel economy, in a car that doesn’t feel like you are driving something as inexpensive as it is. It’s fun and zippy for driving around town or highway driving. If you need a small car as a

The 2013 edition of Flex got a mid-life styling refresh that included a slicker new front-end treatment plus minor improvements to both engine offerings. Safety ratings are all top-notch and this, plus high owner reliability ratings, has helped put the Ford Flex on Consumer Reports “Recommended” list of vehicle buys. Although not as fuel-efficient, the standard 3.5 litre engine reportedly has fewer problems compared to the newer and more powerful turbo-charged V6 engine option. It’s mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and drive goes to the front wheels. Highway fuel economy is surprisingly good 8.4 L/100 km, but the city rating is a much thirstier 12.6 L/100km. Flex is a short name for a big Ford utility/wagon type vehicle that can accommodate six or seven people with ease and seat them with an impressive degree of comfort. Made in Canada, Flex is a hard-to-categorize vehicle that was introduced for the 2009 model year. Not a car, a minivan or an SUV, Flex borrows from them all, so the ‘crossover’ tag is also very appropriate. Stylistically the Ford Flex dares to be different. What appears at first glance to be a simple two-box design is actually more complex. It has generally straight styling lines yet there are no sharp corners. Its two-tone paint finish is separated by the dark centre greenhouse section, which gives Flex a distinctive ‘floating roof’ appearance that’s also appealing. On the inside, even with all its seats upright there’s still 566 litres (20 cu ft) of cargo space in the back. That jumps to 1,224 litres (43.2 cu. ft) with the third row down and a whopping 2,355 litres (83.2 cu. ft) with the second row flat. The front passenger seat can also fold forward and allows Flex to swallow 3-metre (10 ft) long object, with its liftgate closed. Flex can also have an impressive max towing capacity of 2,041 kg (4,500 lbs), when properly equipped. Originally (in 2009) Flex just came in SEL and Limited trim levels and allwheel drive was a ($2,000) optional

Whether through a rag or hardtop, this specimen of automotive manufacturing and design allowed people to feel the proverbial wind in their hair within seconds. I felt it as a kid as my mom was lucky enough to be one of the first Miata owners in BC when they came out in 1989 – a red one, of course – and took me out for rides frequently. Those memories have stayed with me over the decades, though I’ve been able to form my own bond with the car. Not only have we (meaning, the various MX-5s I’ve driven in the last in 11 years) put down thousands of kilometres together, we’ve also been paired up at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for the Skip Barber Racing School experience a couple of times. Nostalgia is one popular element of its appeal, but there’s an undeniable fun factor. Whether racing it on a track or just taking it to the grocery store, the first turn you carve in it will rope you in like an infomercial in the wee hours of the night when you can’t sleep. But in the case of the MX-5, you won’t have any buyer’s remorse. Fast-forward through the years and you’re now viewing the fourth generation MX-5. And what better way to welcome the roadster to the stage here in California than via a little band called Duran Duran. And through a live satellite stream that was broadcast here, and abroad in Spain and Japan.

The reasoning? – Both the English music group and the roadster came into popularity in the 80s and continued to succeed and grow in status over the decades. Besides, “Rio” is an incredibly catchy tune to dance to! That said the MX-5 has a new, eye-catching look to it. Not many specs have been released though I can tell you this: it’s lower, wider, and sheds 100kg in the making. It also embodies the KODO or “Soul of Motion” design language. Like with all-new models of anything legendary, there will be a polarizing reception. Some might think it’s too radical. Some might fall immediately in love with it. And some will wait to drive it to make up their mind. Regardless of the way it looks – which certainly helps its cause – it’s really about how you feel on the road, behind the wheel, and when you tuck it in at night. with parts breaking and how he ended up custom building a lot of parts in his own shop. Other people started building their own trucks and soon side-by-side competition began. There were crazy names for these trucks such as; Goliath, Taurus, King-Kong, Grave Digger, and Samson. It was a big thrill for many just to see these trucks drive slowly over some junk cars. They would stop in the middle and get out and wave. Soon fans wanted to see more, so the trucks would pop a wheelie before crushing them. Two cars became eight and then buses. I saw Taurus drive up several cars and onto the roof of two double decker buses. The truck came very close to rolling off, but after a few adjustments to the rear steering he climbed along and then off. The suspension of that time was more about lift height to accommodate the largest tires rather than full suspension travel which came next. The Baja race trucks could handle large jumps without any trouble, so the monster trucks started the change. Massive coil over shocks and four-point suspension that could handle the weight and abuse these trucks would dish out. Now the monster trucks could hit the cars at tremendous speed and fly through the air impressing all. Bigfoot #18 holds the Guinness World Record for the longest jump by a Monster truck at 214’ 8”. When I first started my career in the offroad and truck accessory business I was a young and impressionable 18 year-old. I was impressed with some of the successful off-road shops in the US but I wondered how they had become so succeeded in business. One that came to mind was Midwest Four-Wheel-Drive & Performance Centre, owned by Bob Chandler, creator of the legendary Bigfoot monster trucks. Back then large off-road tires for pickups were not available; this forced Bob to think outside the box and looked to the agriculture industry. He bought a set of 48” tall Firestone tires and along with some custom made wheels; he mounted them onto his truck. People from all over the states started talking about his truck. He was invited to car shows and tractor pulls and that started drawing attention from the four wheel drive magazines. His shop also started to grow rather quickly with all the new interests in 4x4 modifications. A mechanic in his shop gave the truck the nickname Bigfoot because of the way Bob would drive it, heavy foot on the gas pedal. I was looking through one of those magazines and saw a small picture taken from just outside the shop bay door. It was his truck with 66” tall Goodyear tires. I remember thinking he was crazy. After that the monster truck craze began. I was fortunate enough to meet Bob at a trade show in Las Vegas. His truck was there on display and he was outside sitting at a table having lunch. I approached him, not recognizing him in his cowboy hat and asked if the spare seat was taken. Very nice man, he shared with me some of his frustrations

Racing champs to be crowned 2014 season is winding down at Western Speedway Speed will be the name of the game tomorrow (Sept. 13) at Western Speedway, as the Wilroc non-wing sprint cars, stock cars, mini-stocks, Old-Time Racers and dwarf cars contest their year-end championships. Time trials get underway at 5:30 p.m. with racing underway at 6:30. The rest of the racing classes have their grand finale next weekend, but on Sept. 6 they provided plenty of action for the fans. Demo car driver Greg Sagmoen took top spot in the combined cars/trucks 20-lap feature main, followed in order by Aasen Baker, Jim Young and Mike Melin. Sagmoen also won the trophy dash and was second behind Joe Liberatore in the cars heat race. Baker won both the trophy dash and heat race amongst the trucks.

Kevin Lawrenuk was the man to beat in the Hornet class, capturing the 20-lap main, trophy dash and B heat race. Daryl Cahill placed second in the main, followed by Brad Aumen and Dave Isles. Kail Beck took home the trophy for winning the 40-lap main among the Mini Figure 8 cars, beating out Rhett Szevics, Phil Lagan and Kyle Rizok, in that

Benefit concert aids cancer patients

Families affected by disease are the focus of Victoria’s Shared Hope Society Nicole Cushing knows all too well the effects cancer can have on not only the patient but their family and friends. Four years ago she lost her childhood friend to cancer, and her father now has terminal cancer. The founder of the non-profit organization Shared Hope Society, she now makes it her mission to raise money for families and individuals affected by cancer. Funds are given to those people through gift cards or cheques for non-medical expenses such as going out for dinner or to the movies. To raise funds, the society is hosting an all-ages benefit concert Sept. 27 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Knox Presbyterian Church, 2964 Richmond Rd. The first performance starts at 6 p.m. Performances range from rock bands to contemporary dancers, a poetry reading and hula hoopers. Admission is by donation, but Cushing hopes to raise a couple thousand dollars. “All proceeds go to families affected by cancer,” she said. “It’s about having a good time, raising money and raising awareness.” While there are other organizations that help with medical expenses, people often have to give up some of the extras in life when they or someone in their family member has cancer, Cushing said. “There’s a lot of things you miss out on in life.” Besides the fund for non-medical expenses, Cushing has also created a bursary program for education funding for those impacted by cancer. Finding safe preschool snacks can be a tough nut to crack Healthy, flavourful options are out there for kids Angela Cowan News Gazette Staff

With preschool classes starting up, parents once again have to choose their children’s snacks carefully to comply with the varying food restrictions at schools and care centres. West Shore Parks and Recreation, like most facilities, has been ‘nut aware’ for a number of years with the uprising of serious peanut and other nut allergies. “Most of our classes are ‘nut aware,’” says Karen Frost, recreation co-ordinator for the centre. “And all of our kids have a medical form, so if one child does have a severe allergy, we send home letters to all the parents to let them know what they can bring.” Frost suggests fruit, crackers and cheese or yogurt for quick and healthy snacks parents can put together. “We don’t want any candy,

The centre has several children with severe or anaphylactic allergies, and the strict food policy gives parents peace of mind that there’s no chance of an allergen popping up in the classroom. But while those restrictions may ease parents who have to constantly check for allergens, those whose kids

can eat anything often have a hard time thinking of healthy and quick alternatives to granola bars, peanut butter sandwiches and cheese and crackers. “It’s tough for parents who don’t live with (severe allergies) every day,” adds Traylen. Chopped up fruits and veggies, dried apple or banana chips, hummus, rice crackers and bean and lentil dips are all quick and easy options for school time snacks, she suggests. “I personally bake vegan muffins and cookies with lots of seeds and oats and dried fruit. That’s our go-to snack.” Wherever parents decide to send their kids for preschool and care, it’s a good idea to learn what food restrictions are in place and why before packing up the day’s snacks. We’re here to help. Any parent can find themselves in that situation, no matter what tax bracket they’re in.” The services offered by the non-profit organization offers include everything from counselling sessions and courses on life skills and parenting, to free books, food, toys, clothing and household goods. Tuckwell is not only a former volunteer and current staff member, he’s the single parent of a 13-year-old son and has experienced the benefits of 1Up firsthand. “I was a single parent for three or four years when I found the centre, and for me, it began with taking courses and volunteering here. I was looking for help and emotional support,” he said. “By coming to the centre …You feel you are not so alone.” The people who have benefitted from the centre cover a wide range, from immigrants or grandparents to mothers, fathers and others, Tuckwell said. stomach one September afternoon, nine-month-old Danica and I approached a little white building that housed a neighbourhood daycare. My glum mood lifted a few notches at the sight of the multi-coloured climbing apparatus, swings, slides and tricycles. We stepped up to the door, knocked and entered the threshold of a whole new era. Danica pulled herself up on a couch and stood, surveying the room while I sniffled a bit. Then it happened. Little Rosalie, just a few months older than Danica, toddled over, put her arms around Danica and hugged her. It was a sign! The next day, I dropped her off for a few hours while I worked. I picked up a happy child, who did not appear any closer to needing therapy. I continued to suffer moderate anxiety each time I dropped her off – parents could go only as far as the doorstep so as not to hear their offspring wailing, should they suddenly form a parent-attachment – but (unlike me) Danica never cried. In the end, both my daughters spent happy days in daycare, even forging a few life-long friendships. And aside from incurring a few traffic tickets, I’m happy to report, neither child has been carried off in a police car or yet spent any time behind bars.

Walking up York Ridge Place, a steep dead-end road punched into a wooded hillside off Finlayson Arm Road in the heart of Highlands, one can imagine truly rustic living. Which is not to say the people who wind up buying the roughly five-acre lots won’t choose to build luxurious new homes on the land. Not everyone might appreciate the prospect of living in an area once thought to be far from civilization as we know it – The Home Depot, Costco and Millstream Village are now a six-minute drive away. But large lots, whether bare land or with a home already on the property, can offer flexibility, says Roy Coburn with ReMax Camosun, the listing agent for the rugged Highlands lots. “I think there’s a lot of people who don’t want the maintenance of looking after the land. Then you have the people who want the privacy or to keep a horse, or sheep. It’s all personal choice,” he says. While the amount of undeveloped property around the West Shore is diminishing, the presence of such large swaths of land – the York Ridge lots are being sold by one property owner – is not uncommon in the outskirts of urban Greater Victoria. Coburn, a specialist in acreage properties of various formats, has done a quick check on MLS of listings with lot sizes of two acres or more. As of this week there were 106 bare land lots of that size around Greater Victoria, 22 of which are situated in Highlands, Langford,

There are also those people who

are used to living a little off the beaten track, perhaps on the Prairies, where rural homes are spaced further apart. Coburn offers an example of clients who lived an hour or so west of Victoria and wanted to be closer to the city. “They found a property they liked that had a roughed-in driveway and the services were all there. They wanted to be closer, but they still wanted their privacy,” he says. Bare land acreages can run anywhere from $275,000 and up, depending on the size, proximity to waterfront and the amount of work

already done to bring services in. While the majority of such properties available for sale are on the outskirts of the region, they are becoming ever-closer to commercial centres and other amenities. The pricing of large-lot properties with homes already built are like any other home: they get higher the closer to Victoria they’re located. “The general feeling right now is you can buy a house cheaper than you can build one,” Coburn says. “But it doesn’t take long to look around and see if there’s something available in an area you like that’s within your budget.”

Looking at classic cars and eating ribs might seem like an unlikely combination, but in Esquimalt, an estimated 25,000 people will do just that this weekend. The third annual Rods and Rides free car show takes place tomorrow (Sept. 13) in conjunction with the Esquimalt Rib Fest, taking place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The car show and the rib festival serve as fundraisers for the annual Esquimalt Celebration of Lights. Organizers are hoping to use the money to expand the end-of-year celebration this year. “Eventually we’ll have the whole municipality lit up,” said Dino Fiorin, chairman of Esquimalt’s Celebration of Lights. “This is a long-term plan.” This year’s car show will not only feature vintage cars, but there will be a range of vehicles all the way to electric. The Victoria Leaf Club, an electric car club, will have around 20 cars at the show. “It’s to show all different kinds of cars and transportation history,” said Lorne Argyle, organizer of the car show. “Come see what’s happened in the last 70 years.” Fiorin will be showing several of his classic cars, including his 1947 Pontiac, which he has had for 35 years.
