Langford has said “yes” to adding a question regarding amalgamation on the ballots for Nov. 15. Residents will have an opportunity to vote on a non-binding question gauging interest in a study on amalgamation, after Langford council approved placing the question to municipal election ballots for the fall election. “We looked at it in the past and thought there is no harm in asking the question and letting people give their opinion,” said Langford Coun. Denise Blackwell. “I would be interested in seeing the results. Nicole Fredrickson was at the Ovarian Cancer Walk of Hope in Courtenay with her mother in 2005 when something happened that would influence her life. “The speaker made a comment about how we should get a walk going in Victoria,” the longtime Colwood resident recalls. “My mom just looked over at me and smiled. I knew she wanted me to do it.” Two months later her mother lost her battle with ovarian cancer, and Fredrickson felt compelled to fulfill that dying wish. She and brother Phil Venoit organized the inaugural walk that same year and Fredrickson has co-chaired it, assisted by her family, every year since.

Venoit, who lives in Metchosin, credits his sister for keeping the walk going. “It’s (her) drive, passion and compassion to do something that would commemorate our mother,” he says. The siblings recognized the need to raise awareness after their mother’s diagnosis came too late for effective treatment, a common theme with ovarian cancer, the symptoms of which are often mis-associated with stomach troubles or premenstrual syndrome. “We recognized there was very little information, very little research going on,” Venoit says. “It didn’t have the same exposure as prostate or breast cancer.” Local business E.H. Emery Electric was quick to offer support for the walk and has been a major sponsor every year, says Venoit, adding they offer a “tremendous amount of support,” bringing their staff to the event, helping to set up and more. “(Derek and Bonnie Emery) really ensure the event is successful in Victoria,” he says.

And the support is sincerely heartfelt. Derek has lost both his mother and sister to cancer, a loss that echoes through the walk’s participants. Everyone seems to walk either in support of others, in memory of a loved one who lost the fight or while going through treatment themselves. Helen Taylor of View Royal is walking again this year for friend Sue Sorbie, a North Islander who was a staunch supporter of the Victoria event from day one. “We always walked for Sue every year,” Taylor says. Sorbie endured course after course of treatments until she passed away a couple of years ago. “She always came out. Even the last year, when she couldn’t walk because she couldn’t come down to (Colwood), we went up to her (in Courtenay) and Sue sat in the car and watched us all walk,” Taylor says. “Sue was such a remarkable lady. She inspired so many people.” Driven to do something to remember her friend,

Taylor gathered all the official T-shirts of the previous eight walks, and sewed them into a quilt with the help of friends Myrna Laing and Jennifer Watson. “I just wanted to do something with the T-shirts,” Taylor says. “I did it in memory of Sue.” She gave the quilt to Fredrickson, who was moved by the gesture and immediately asked to use it as the symbol for the yearly walk. The walk honours friends and loved ones who’ve passed, but it’s also important for bringing the disease into the public eye, says Fredrickson. With no early detection or effective screening, she says, it’s vital to educate people about what to watch for and encourage them to take symptoms seriously. The walk happens Sunday (Sept. 7) at Royal Roads University. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the walk is at 10. Lyme disease is gaining recognition as a misidentified problem in Canada, but it’s not there yet. Leading the charge is federal Green Party leader Elizabeth May, who will give a talk on Lyme disease during an awareness-heightening and fundraising dinner hosted by Evedar’s Bistro in Langford next Tuesday (Sept. 9). “I have many friends and constituents who are living with this terrible disease,” said May in an email. “We need to make absolutely sure that all Canadian doctors are equipped with the tools and knowledge to effectively diagnose and treat patients suffering from Lyme.” May has been working on developing a national framework to address Lyme disease in Canada for the past three years. Her private members bill, unanimously supported, has been referred to the Senate and will be taken up this autumn. Fran Jinnouchi, co-owner of Evedar’s with her husband, Marc, heard about what May had been doing for the Lyme cause. Upon inviting her to speak at the event, Fran said, May quickly agreed. Jinnouchi says the event was initially developed to financially support a close friend, a Langford woman who was diagnosed with Lyme disease after a year of unexplained severe symptoms and lost time at work. Sarah C., who shuns the spotlight, had to go south of the border both for a positive diagnosis and for the treatment her own government can’t provide. “I care very deeply about my friend,” Jinnouchi says. “It’s difficult to see there isn’t the support or awareness out there.” She set up the evening as a fundraiser, with all proceeds going to help Sarah cover treatment costs, but it quickly grew into a community event as well. “As it started to unfold, I realized there is interest out there,” Jinnouchi says. “It raises this social consciousness that we all have a role to play. “For me, what I’ve come to learn in the last year and a half (about Lyme), it’s alarming. It could happen to anyone. And yet, we all can bring about change.” As well as the talk from May, the evening includes a two-course dinner donated by the Jinnouchis and live flamenco and Latin music by guitarist Brad Prevedoros, who’s also donating his time to the cause. Scia’new Chief Russell Chipps and T’Sou-Ke Chief Gordon Planes will give a traditional welcome to the territory before dinner. The event runs from 5 to 8 p.m. at 2829 Peatt Rd. on Sept. 9. The cost is $50 per person and there will be a cash bar. Reservations are required and payment is by cash only. Silvester, chair of the Colwood Heritage Commission, took over care of dozens of artifacts when the Goldstream Museum Society dissolved late last year. Saanich’s Heritage Acres and the Sidney museum, among others, have expressed interest in some of the artifacts, which include old records, ploughs, snowshoes, stoves and other household articles. “It’s great stuff for a museum display,” Silvester says. However, he’d like some of the items to remain in Colwood. “Because we don’t have a museum per se, we would like to put certain items aside for a rotating display in city hall.” An old telephone exchange is currently on display there,

and Silvester says they have the ingredients for a 1920s-style kitchen setup as well. The group is expected to finish initial cataloguing this week. A Heritage Commission meeting is set for the next few weeks to get input from all members involved in the project. There’s a “ways to go yet,” Silvester says, a point to which Royal Roads colleague Posynick agrees. “It’s definitely a process, but I think we’re getting there,” she says. acowan@goldstreamgazette.com

The 20th-century historical pieces that were left behind when the Goldstream Museum Society dissolved last year still need a permanent home, says Bill Silvester. The chair of the Colwood Heritage Commission adds, however, progress is being made on that front. “(The collection) is only in two places instead of half a dozen,” he says – Royal Roads University has provided temporary storage, as has Colwood city hall. It’s been eight months since the commission took control of the artifacts, and with the help of Royal Roads archivist Caroline Posynick and View Royal archivist Chance Dixon, Silvester has nearly finished going through the accession records and is set to begin photographing and cataloguing the items. The tricky part is making sure the pieces are properly stored and protected, he says. “Because it’s been in storage for so long, a lot of it has been damaged, perhaps irretrievably.” One of the other concerns was determining whether any of the items had to be returned to their original owners after the museum dissolved, but Silvester says that hasn’t been an issue. “According to the records, everything was given to the museum with no stipulation.” Some of the items are Colwood-specific, and some more general to their time periods.

Blackwell said Langford actually supported looking at amalgamation with Colwood about seven years ago, but in the end Colwood said no. Earlier this year Langford council announced it would put a question on the ballot if there were 75 per cent of the 13 municipalities in the Capital Regional District planning to do so. Council decided to take out the “caveat” and put an as-yet undetermined question on the ballot, in an effort to gather as much information as possible, Blackwell said. Capital Region

Central Saanich, for example, will ask residents if they support asking the province to do a costbenefit analysis on amalgamation of the municipality with Sidney and North Saanich. Vickers said Oak Bay Mayor Nils Jensen has expressed some interest in putting it on his municipality’s ballots if there is enough support from other jurisdictions. At just over three months, Mia is one smart puppy. She stops at every curb and door she comes across and is now learning to do the same for escalators. On a sunny Tuesday morning, Mia weaves through a precariously designed obstacle of cones, baby gates, tissues, balls and other natural street distractions during her B.C. Guide Dogs class in the lacrosse box of Topaz Park. It’s the life of a guide dog in training, but when it’s play time, there’s no mistaking Mia as just another playful pup, jumping and rolling with the rest of her class. “It’s all work on the leash and play time can only be off-lead, when we allow it,” says Pierre Gagne, one half of Mia’s puppy raising team along with partner Marlene Homan. Gagne is self-employed and works from his Victoria home, which make him and Homan ideal candidates. It’s their first time raising a puppy for the B.C. Guide Dogs and the organization is looking for more puppy raisers in the Greater Victoria area as three litters become available for both September and October. Retired couples are often best-suited, or those people in a position such as Gagne, says local puppy raising supervisor Laura Mahoney. Classes are outside at Topaz but Mahoney is hoping to move indoors if the space is made available through a willing donor.

“We’ve been outside for 10 years, which is just fine during the beautiful summer days we’re having, but year round is tough,” says Mahoney. Other cities are able to use donated facility time, such as in churches, but with a limited budget, the local B.C. Guide Dogs chapter will remain outside for the foreseeable future. As for the puppies, they’re placed with ideal candidates for puppy raising at seven weeks old and live with the puppy raiser up to 18 months. The dogs are actually bred by B.C. Guide Dogs in Delta, a cross between lab and retriever. They graduate through a series of programs and ideally become a guide dog for vision impairment. Should the animals fall short of the rigid requirements, they are still highly capable and are placed with the family of someone with autism. Three down, more to come? News on the amalgamation front has been fast and furious this week. Council in two more municipalities, most notably Langford, but also Central Saanich, voted to put a form of question relating to the further study of amalgamation on the ballot for the 2014 civic election. Representatives from Amalgamation Yes can be excused for rubbing their hands together with a degree of satisfaction, having seen their many months of effort rewarded with buy-in from two of the three largest jurisdictions in the Capital Region. This week Langford officially changed its mind about waiting to see whether 75 per cent of all area municipalities were going to put a question on their ballots. In our minds, Langford has never been a “follower” type of municipality, rather a leader in getting things done progressively. We’d like to think that conversations with residents helped turn the tide. Not to mention reminders from staff that any question placed on the ballot, simply to take the public’s temperature on a further investigation of some form of amalgamation, need not be binding and wouldn’t legally require them to take steps toward such a move. Which is not to say municipalities can be flippant about this exercise in democracy, trying it on for size like a pair of shoes. It still requires serious thought about what areas of integration might benefit residents, which comes with costs for staff time on top of added printing expenses. A big part of the equation is the wording of the question. It can be as open and general, or specific and detailed as desired, depending on what municipalities hope to achieve with this initial inquiry. In essence, there’s really not a lot to lose by putting a question on the ballot, outside of slightly distracting voters from their primary task of electing their councils. Whether other West Shore municipalities will follow Langford’s lead is anyone’s guess. But if up-and-comer Colwood says yes to a ballot question, we believe others around the region will look seriously at changing their minds, like Langford did and simply ask, why not?

Beauty of volunteerism illustrated Recently I volunteered at Track Fest, an event organized by the Greater Victoria Velodrome Association, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the 1994 Commonwealth Games. As a longtime participant and supporter of sports in our community, I often attend weekly summer races at the velodrome located at Westshore Parks and Recreation, and I’m always amazed at the speed and skill that these cyclists exhibit. However, this summer was extra special as I witnessed an overall increase in ridership with a significant increase in junior riders who are provided top-notch coaching. Consequently, I had no hesitation putting my name forward as a volunteer. I must say the event was all I expected it to be and more. With riders attending from up-Island and the Lower Mainland, the competition was fast and electric. The atmosphere was festive and friendly with music, food tents, and even a beer garden situated right above the finish line. As a volunteer I was fed and hydrated all weekend and at the end of the event was presented with a gift card to a local coffee shop and an event T-shirt. How cool is that? Also, as it turns out many of the officials who ran this event also attend and volunteer at other cycling events throughout Victoria and have done so since before the 1994 Commonwealth Games.

Government thumbs nose at Supreme Court ruling I am a mother, grandmother and great grandmother. I am raising my great niece and grandson, who should be starting grades 3 and 4 this week. I am very disappointed that the B.C. Liberal government and B.C. teachers have not been able to reach a negotiated settlement. We live in a democracy where we should be able to believe that when something such as class size and composition is dealt with in a Supreme Court decision, the decision is binding on both parties. I am somewhat baffled the court decision is now being “negotiated” after the fact by the government of the day and that our children are not going back to school. Is the government trying to teach our children that as long as you are the party in power, you can decide whether or not to accept a Supreme Court ruling? Get our children back to school. The Bipolar Disorder Society of B.C. is looking for six Greater Victoria residents diagnosed with bipolar disorder, aged 19 to 25, to help fill what founder Andrea Paquette calls a “gap in youth research.” Having recently received a $159,000 research grant from the Vancouver Foundation, the society, along with the University of B.C.-based Collaborative Research Team to Study Bipolar Disorder (CREST.BD), are forming youth action groups here and in the Comox Valley. Each group will research ways in which youth can stay well while living with bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is characterized by periods of mania, in which the individual feels overwhelmingly happy and energetic, which can result in irresponsible choice. These periods

of mania transition into bouts of depression, in which the individual often feels unmotivated, anxious, hopeless or isolated. Statistically, those diagnosed with bipolar disorder face a much higher risk of self-harm or suicide than the general population. “It’s a challenge every day,” Paquette said. “It’s more than having good and bad days. One day you can be euphoric, goaloriented and so energetic you can’t sleep. The next morning you won’t be able to get out of bed for three days.” Paquette said that those interested in joining the youth action group don’t need any previous experience, but should have an interest in research and be available one to three days a month for the next two years. Training will be provided by a Torontobased group, with research methods being decided afterwards. Positions are paid.

The society will also be hosting two research forums, open to all youth aged 16 to 25 suffering from bipolar disorder, the first of which will take place in January in Victoria. The society runs several youth mental health support groups in Greater Victoria, including a Langford chapter at the Centennial Park Recreation Centre aimed at young men and women 18 and over. Paquette said she formed the groups after seeing a lack of supports for youth. “It’s amazing to see how the groups have grown. Driving to Hell can be cool Alexandra Straub

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – If you’re driving to Hell, what kind of car would you want to be in? An SUV? A sports car? One that if you never come back, at least your missing person’s report would list you last seen: “in something fast, flashy and awesome?” When my driving partner and I stumbled upon Hell, Michigan, or at least the sign that directed us that way, we were in the all-new, 2015 Hyundai Sonata, a sedan that is now seven generations strong. We had air conditioning in case it got really hot and directions via the navigation system in case we went to Hell and lost our way back. And comfortable seats in case the crossing of the River Styx was long and arduous. Furthermore, we had the power to get us out of there if we needed to leave in a hurry. Okay, enough about Hell and back in the car… for 2015, the Sonata gives you two engine options; both of which have been revised for the seventh generation. The first is a peppy 2.4L, 4-cylinder with 185 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque. Then there’s the spirited, optional, 2.0-litre twinscroll turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 245 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Both engine variants are linked with a 6-speed automatic transmission. There’s a lot going on with Hyundai’s mid-size sedan. It’s built with an all-new chassis, which equates to a more comfortable ride, better handling and an overall improvement in NVH (Noise, Vibrations, Harshness.) To test that out, we took it to the streets of Ann Arbor in Michigan, as well as the

The 2015 Sonata gives the driver a choice of three drive modes. These modes work together with the sedan’s engine, transmission, and Motor-Driven Power Steering (MDPS) to suit different driver preferences. In Sport, powertrain responsiveness and heavier steering weight are both increased. The steering weight definitely comes in handy on the twisty parts of the road. In Normal mode, steering isn’t as responsive but better suited for urban environments. And if you’re in a fuel saving mood, pop the

car into Eco mode. This softens throttle response and recalibrates transmission response so you get the most out of your tank. Speaking of steering, Hyundai mentions, “The 2015 Sonata’s steering wheel features an irregular shape with increased rim thickness and ergonomic grip rests. These subtle changes ensure more of the steering wheel surface remains in contact with the driver’s hands. In turn, the vehicle offers enhanced steering system feel, especially at high speed.” I’d agree with this. My fingers were comfortably placed at 9 and 3 o’clock and felt pretty good there. But it’s not just the driving modes and steering wheel that make the Sonata as popular as it is. The 2015 comes with all new styling inside and outside.

Rebels get some ‘super’ help trying for second straight win With a bye week helping heal up some nagging injuries, the Westshore Rebels juniors look to even their B.C. Football Conference record to 3-3 tomorrow at home against the Kamloops Broncos. Having posted their most lopsided win of the season on Aug. 23, a 41-7 drubbing of the Valley Huskers, the Rebels return to Westhills Stadium for a 3 p.m. game against the Broncos, who sit in third spot at 3-2. Heading into the game, several Rebels are among the league leaders in various offensive categories. Quarterback Hunter Lake, the defending BCFC offensive player of the week, is sixth overall in rushing with 216 yards on 21 carries, while running back Johnny Quan is 12th at 173 yards. Jordan Rodinsky and Nathan Leader sit third and fourth for receiving yards with 386 and 382, respectively, while Griffin Dear is 13th with 222 yards. Leader’s 23.9 yards per catch are tops in the league among receivers with 15 or more receptions. Lake is also third in total passing yards (1,342) and touchdown passes (10) and fifth in passer rating (76.8 per cent). The Rebels will be helped in spirit at least by the presence of the Superheroes of Victoria at the game. Players joined the local charity group for a fundraiser photo shoot for B.C. The Victoria Grizzlies are coming to Sooke. SEAPARC Arena plays host to the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) team’s final preseason game, Sept. 13 against the Cowichan Capitals. Despite it being an exhibition, the Grizzlies will be bringing their game faces to the rink against a heated rival. “This is our last pre-season game before everything gets started, so we are pretty excited,” said Grizzlies head coach and general manager Brad Knight. “That game will feature our (full) roster, so the fans that are going to pay for tickets are going to watch the players that are going to play. They will get the best.” Knight took over on the bench from Craig Didmon, who left the team in the off-season after the Grizzlies were eliminated with a crushing triple-overtime defeat to the Coquitlam Express in the third round of last year’s playoffs. Knight said coming to Sooke

has been on his radar for some time. “It’s been a couple of years since we have been out there, but it is an area where we get fans from, we see lots of fans coming from Sooke,” he said. “We’ll try to bring our game and the way we play to some of our fans and show them some appreciation.” Game day features a tailgate party and barbecue at 1 p.m. prior to the 4 p.m. start. All money collected from admissions and fundraisers, including a 50/50 draw and a fastest shot competition, go to Sooke Rotary Club and Sooke Minor Hockey. Grizzlies forward Cole Pickup said being a part of events like this are an important part of being a player. “I can’t thank the community

enough for what they’ve done for this organization and myself,” he said. “They have always been behind us, no matter how tough the times have been. Anything we can help the community with, it feels awesome to help.” Come the start of the season, however, the bitter taste of last year’s loss will be on his mind, as he looks forward to having a strong year and a chance at redemption. “This year is a new year with a lot of new faces and a lot of new staff, so we’re excited and we’re not going for anything but the best,” the Colwood resident said. “No matter if it’s an exhibition game, we want to beat Cowichan. Canada 200 a Labour Day weekend racing tradition Wade Bland outlasted the field to capture the annual Reg Midgley Memorial Canada 200 latemodel championship Sunday, capping a busy weekend of racing at Western Speedway. The Saanich driver was part of a four-car pack that duelled in the late stages of the feature race. Bland took his first lead at lap 133 and fended off a number of challenges, including one from eventual runner-up Dave Hemrich on a yellow flag restart at lap 163. Bland ultimately crossed the line just ahead of Hemrich, with Darrell Midgely in third and Rob Angus in fourth. The winner got himself into contention early, moving up to third spot by about lap 64. He hung around with the leaders until the 100-lap refuelling break, then overtook Hemrich for the lead after another yellow flag. On lap 103 Hemrich had wrested the lead away from Geoff Morris, who had held the lead the previous 45 laps. Morris earlier showed his chops with wins in the heat and trophy dash. Rounding out the top eight in the finale were, in order, Brandon Carlson, Morris, Aaron Wilkie and Cody Brown. It was a successful weekend for Bland, who warmed up for Sunday’s main event with secondplace finishes in the heat race and trophy dash. The night before he captured the checkered flag in the first of two 50-lap mains, followed by a thirdplace finish. Angus scored a victory in the second main event Saturday, followed by Jason Terasenko, who was second in both mains that night. With the stock cars sharing the bill with the late models both nights, it was five-time season champion Ryan Wade who commanded the spotlight, winning both 75-lap main events as part of this year’s Street Stock Driver Challenge. Bob Kuhn crossed the line second Sunday followed by Chis McInerney and Mike Sproule. McInerney and Kuhn flipped their results from the Saturday main, in which Brian Clutchey finished fourth. Other than winning a trophy dash on Saturday, Wade was otherwise quiet, posting a pair of fourthplace finishes in heat races on the weekend. Some West Shore real estate agents were a little concerned when the typical post-winter housing market upswing took a while to materialize. Patience has paid off for buyers, sellers and Realtors alike, however, as the market showed better than expected results for a typically slower period of the year, summer holiday time. “Typically the strongest selling season is the spring, so that’s why we were saying, ‘what’s happening?’ It was so slow to take off,” said Jean Omelchenko of DFH Real Estate West Shore. “It was a slower spring, (but) the spring spilled into the summer and it’s just carried on. Actually it’s the busiest August we’ve had in a long time.” The figures released by the Victoria Real Estate Board this week showed significant improvement over the previous year. Last month 609 properties were sold, a 12-percent increase over the 540 sold in August 2013. Sooke-based board president Tim Ayres sounded thrilled with the continued strong showing. “When July numbers came in higher than we expected based on the past five years of sales activity, I think a lot of people were surprised,” he said. “But sure enough, the market outperformed last year’s sales again in August and we’ve had the busiest August we’ve seen in five years.” It’s not just a summer blip: yearto-date sales for the region are running at a 10.5-per-cent better clip

The absence of pricing pressures caused by a lack of supply – which caused bidding wars in past – coupled with still-low mortgage rates, has been key to maintaining that trend.

While specific figures for the West Shore as a region were not available at the Gazette press time, Ayres pointed out that the Home Price Index benchmark price for a typical single family home in the Greater Victoria core was $491,500, less than $5,000 more than last year. Despite a temporary glut of supply in the local condominium market as development projects have come on stream, the benchmark prices for condos and townhouses have both risen by about 2.5 per cent in the past year. Continuing to pace the market on the West Shore, Omelchenko said, are first-time homebuyers who are still eagerly snapping up new or fairly new homes in fast-growing areas such as Happy Valley in Langford.

Fundraiser helps more kids play community sports Homegrown West Shore golf event at Bear Mountain continues to prove popular with supporters News Gazette staff

Next week’s sixth annual Sport Assist golf tournament at Bear Mountain Golf Resort will be the organization’s biggest yet, with a full slate of 216 golfers swinging their clubs to raise money so local kids can afford to play sports. SportAssist, founded by Langford’s Gerry St. Cyr, funds youth aged five to 18 on an individual basis, removing financial barriers so they can participate in sports. St. Cyr, facility operator at City Centre Park, started the organization seven years ago. “I’m around recreation 24-7 and I can really see the need and financial struggle from some families, which means some kids were not getting to play sports,” he says. “There was a young guy that used to carry his hockey bag all the way down the Langford parkway to do drop-in roller hockey,” he remembers. St. Cyr looked into it, and found out the kid couldn’t afford the league fees. “I thought, something has to be done locally here.” Since its inception, the number of kids helped by the program has doubled every year, he says. “Now people know that we’re here. There’s more of a need for it, but
