She said he seemed distraught at the time, and announced that he was going to go camping to get away and clear his head. Korkowski said Rutherford camped at Rolley Lake in Mission for the first half of August before moving to the Jones Lake area. He was in touch with friends every cou-

ple of days, and Korkowski said she last heard from him on Aug. 21. Friends tried to reach him on his cellphone after that, but their calls went to voicemail. A worried Korkowski, accompanied by her husband and a friend, went searching for Rutherford on Friday, Aug. 29. They located his campsite, which was still set up with his tent, camp stove, and other personal items, but Rutherford and his vehicle were gone. The trio could find no sign of him, and reported their concerns to police. Korkowski said Rutherford loved to go 4x4ing in his SUV, and she is concerned that he might have had an accident, perhaps rolling down an embankment.

Public classes are out, but Pranav Arya – a 16-yearold student heading into Grade 12 – was hard at work on school projects in the Abbotsford Community Library on Thursday. His school, the neighbouring Abbotsford senior secondary, remains behind picket lines and it is still unclear when classes may begin. Arya studies in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, which assigns some work for the summer months. He is among many students who are growing concerned about missing class time. Arya has an exam in May that is worth the majority of his grade, which will remain the same regardless of how many days of school there are. “Every day that I miss, other students are getting to work and learning.” Arya said if the strike continues until October, he may have an issue, predicting that weekends and break will be effected to put in extra study time. He wants to study engineering with a minor in business at the University of British Columbia and is worried about applications for scholarships. “It will be more difficult to say what I’ve done in the last year, when other students across the country haven’t been hindered by the strike.” His involvement at school goes past high-level academics. He had hopes to start a debate team, but he is unable to talk to his teachers. The Key Club service group he’s a member of can’t meet. Arya is on the football team, which is playing with the help of parents and community members, but he’s worried about cuts to the season and the impact on a championship drive. Although Arya will stay involved with clubs, he wonders if Grade 9’s entering high school will be overwhelmed by a late start and less inclined to take on extracurriculars. He continues to monitor the information coming from the government and the union. “IB is about learning how to think about what you’re being told,” explained Ayra, saying it seems to him that both sides are putting blame on the other. But he added that the province is comparing teachers to other workers in the public sector, instead of teachers around the country, and there is a need to place a higher level of respect on what teachers do. Kevin Godden, superintendent of Abbotsford schools, said the district doesnâ€™t yet have plans on how to make up for lost time. â€œItâ€™s safe to say that we have to take some direction from the ministry of education on this.â€? He also said itâ€™s important to consult with teachers to work out scheduling issues, but that cannot be done while they are on strike. He said it is particularly important in order to assist students in Grades 10 to 12. â€œThey are at the end of their K-12 journey and the courses that they have to take, especially if they have some impact on their post-secondary education, we have to give some serious thought to how we will make up credits for those kids.â€? But he added that teachers are dedicated to their students. â€œI know they will do their best when this is over to get on with it.â€? Peter Fassbender, minister of education, told The News that ministry staff are working hard on plans to mitigate the impact of missed class time. â€œI donâ€™t have specifics. There are all kinds of options â€“ looking at extending the year, shortening Christmas, spring breakâ€Ś extending the days. But right now there is no firm plan because our hope is that teachers would be willing to suspend their strike action while we try to get a negotiated and/or mediated settlement.â€? B.C. Teachersâ€™ Federation president Jim Iker ruled out a twoweek truce the province proposed FASSBENDER last week and is still offering. â€œThe government remains entrenched and unwilling to be flexible,â€? he told reporters. â€œWeâ€™re not suspending any strike right now.â€? Fassbender has vowed the government wonâ€™t legislate the teachers back to work, as it has several times in the past. The strike began with rotating walkouts in the spring and turned into a complete school shutdown in mid-June. There were virtually no negotiations through the summer until a last-minute effort at exploratory talks led by mediator Vince Ready began last week. Ready walked away last Saturday, declaring an impasse with the two sides too far apart for mediation. Provincial government negotiator Peter Cameron said the government is not interested in binding arbitration to settle the strike, as it would be empowering one person to force through a final decision that might be extremely costly. Nor, he said, is it the optimum way to reach a result best for students in classrooms or that the two sides can live with. â€œThe parties end up not really having made the hard decisions and owning the outcome,â€? Cameron said of arbitration. BCTF vice-president Glen Hansman said the union â€œmight be openâ€? to arbitration but doesnâ€™t expect interest from the province. For upcoming graduates, Fassbender told The News he has been talking with advanced education minister Amrik Virk, who he said â€œhas been talking to universities as far as entry requirements and those kinds of things and Iâ€™m sure weâ€™ll find a way to deal with that.â€? Asked what he would do to end future labour strife between teachers and government, Fassbender told The News that involves having a longer-term agreement â€œso that weâ€™re not always on the labour treadmill, which weâ€™ve been on for decades,â€? and setting up ways to work on contract issues on an ongoing basis and not simply at the next round of negotiations. If those efforts were made, â€œI think we would find ourselves working more in partnership on the future of education for every student in our system, rather than into this kind of standoff on the labour side.â€?

Tinker the mare had a bit of a fright on Wednesday afternoon, but she can thank members of Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service (AFRS) for turning her day around. The horse fell into a ditch at Matway Farms – located at 4674 Bates Road, east of Townshipline Road – at about 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday. Fire crews who arrived at the scene found Tinker in a water-filled ditch with her back legs wedged into the muddy bottom. As they determined the best way to try to move her, the mare occasionally became agitated and thrashed around. A wool blanket was placed over her head as a temporary measure. “If they can’t see, it calms them down,” said Assistant Fire Chief Craig Bird at the scene. A veterinarian was also called to the scene, and she administered a sedative to calm the

I feel compelled to write concerning the teachers’ strike and am appalled at the attitude of both the BCTF and the Liberal government. The head of the BCTF can only be described as a total embarrassment for the teachers, as he has shown absolutely no interest in the education of our children, and from the reported demands he is completely unrealistic.

Unaware of issues dictate. Why would teachers negotiate away things the courts have ruled in their favour? Please, be informed. And recognize that your government is spending your tax dollars doing everything it can (fighting court cases, providing day care, etc) to avoid investing in public education.

The events of the past four months or so have certainly shaken confidence in the education system and the mechanics in place to ensure students receive a quality education in our province. As a teacher, I’m constantly frustrated that various media stories must, by necessity, focus on specific elements of the issue and therefore most stories tend to miss many of the important facts. The more I read from the general public, I’m realize that the majority of people are not aware of all the issues at play. First off, this battle is really one that should be waged by our school trustees and parents. Instead, after years of erosion in the system, teachers have been forced to the front lines. Only recently have parents and trustees realized that they, too, need to be at the forefront of this battle. Secondly, this is not a battle over wages and benefits. Well, not the way “benefits” would normally be classified. The government views any demands for funding the system as teacher “benefits.” In other words, Johnny’s one-on-one time with a special needs teacher qualifies as a “benefit” to me. Not sure how this makes sense. Lastly, composition issues have been an issue for over 15 years. Teachers have made concessions in the past to ensure composition language in our contracts, and the government of the day has illegally stripped this language. Any current proposal from the government to end the present strike includes language that would negate any court rulings that the Supreme Court of appeal may

The attitude of the Liberal government shows they are putting their heads in the sand and show no leadership in ensuring the public education system operates as it is supposed to. It is my view that strikes and/or lockouts in the public education system should be prohibited, and disputes of this nature settled by compulsory mediation through an established mediator. The education of our children should never be subjected to the greed of teachers or governments. In the present situation, the BCTF should show some positive leadership by directing members to return to work so that students will not be subject to irreparable harm. (Jim Iker’s) failure to do so can only be described as an embarrassment. That term also applies to the provincial government, which seems to willingly sit back and do nothing. What the government should be doing is seeking assistance to resolve the issues either with the co-operation of the BCTF or otherwise. This matter shows the BCTF should look for a new president, and the people in British Columbia should ensure the Liberals are not again re-elected in the next provincial election.

Long-time residents were recognized at a special tea last weekend.

Pioneer Tea honours long-time residents More than 70 long-time residents of Abbotsford were honoured on Sunday afternoon at a special event held at Trethewey House. The MSA Museum Society hosted a “Pioneer Tea” for long-term residents of Abbotsford whose families settled in the Matsqui-Sumas-Abbotsford areas as far back as the 1870s. A special presentation was made by long-time Matsqui prairie resident Ernie Poignant that had everyone reflecting on Abbotsford’s early beginnings. Long-standing Valley resident Mayor Bruce Banman, who was raised in Chilliwack, officially welcomed the pioneers and reflected on his family’s ties to Vancouver. Banman presented an award to 95-year-old Len Hoon, the oldest person in attendance. Coun. Moe Gill presented an award to 93-year-old Cyril Holbrow, who was born and raised in Clayburn Village. Pioneers, including former mayor George Ferguson, spent time reminiscing and reflecting on their past, telling stories of what it was like growing up and living in the area. Many of the families in attendance are featured in the MSA Museum’s book “Pioneer Families,” available at the society’s office next to Trethewey House on Ware Street.

The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) is reporting what it says is an unprecedented number of Honda passenger vehicles being stolen in the city since July 1. Const. Ian MacDonald said of the 102 passenger vehicles stolen in Abbotsford from July 1 to Sept. 2, 24 have been Hondas. This represents almost 24 per cent of all the vehicles stolen in Abbotsford during that time. “These are unprecedented numbers and percentages,” MacDonald said. In the previous 64-day period, only two Honda passenger vehicles were stolen. There were 37 such vehicles stolen in all of 2013, but so far in 2014, a total of 41 Hondas have been swiped, MacDonald said. This represents an increase of 32 per cent. MacDonald said the majority of stolen Hondas are pre-2004 models, before immobilizers and anti-theft devices were commonly built into vehicles. He said thefts have occurred across Abbotsford, but in the last two weeks have been concentrated in an area between Marshall Road and South Fraser

Budget reflects Heat payout Council has approved a budget amendment to reflect a $5.5-million payment to the Abbotsford Heat. Once the anchor tenant of the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre – now renamed the Abbotsford Centre – the Calgary Flames-affiliated team’s contract was terminated in April when Mayor Bruce Banman announced the city would pay the team to end the remaining five years of the 10-year supply fee agreement signed in 2009. A city report says the one-time payment was made from the city’s 2014 unappropriated reserves and will not have an impact on property tax.

Some of the Hondas stolen from Abbotsford have been recovered in other communities and most likely were used in the commission of other offences, MacDonald said. He said the crime spike could indicate that a particular person – or people – who is proficient with stealing Hondas has recently begun living in, or frequenting, the commu-

nity. A crime spike can occur, for example, when an offender has been released from prison. MacDonald said police have stepped up enforcement in the targeted areas and have added extra monitoring by the Abbotsford Citizens’ Patrol and reserve constables. Officers have also been approaching Honda owners to inform them of the spree and to in-

form them that the APD is offering free anti-theft devices to Abbotsford registered owners of pre-2004 Hondas. Horizon at concert in park

The Envision Financial Concert in the Park Series presents Horizon at the Kariton Art Gallery stage in Mill Lake Park (2387 Ware St.) on Saturday, Sept. 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. Horizon offers a blend of rock, blues, gospel and pop from vocalists Crystal Hicks, Dana Wright and Chantelle Davidson, and musicians,

Sesame Street Live dances onto stage Elmo, Abby Cadabby and their friends return to the Abbotsford Centre this fall in the Sesame Street Live production “Let’s Dance!” Tickets go on sale starting Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 10 a.m. for the show taking place Dec. 13 and 14. Hosted by two live performers, the production offers an upclose, interactive experience that includes dance parties. Recycling fundraiser A recent recycling event has resulted in a $2,500 donation to the Abbotsford Food Bank. The event was hosted on Aug. 16 by the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce and ElectroRecycle. Residents were invited to bring unwanted small appliances and power tools to the parking lot of Sevenoaks Shopping Centre. In exchange, ElectroRecycle made a $1 donation to the food bank for every kilogram of unwanted items. ElectroRecycle is the first program of its kind in Canada to recycle small appliances and power tools. The not-for-profit program accepts more than 300 electrical products such as electric toothbrushes, countertop microwave ovens, hand-held drills and treadmills. Students who study music are more successful in school and score higher grades not only in math, but also in the language arts and comprehension. High quality music study can result in up to 20% improvement in test scores.

2. Students of music learn teamwork skills and self-discipline. Playing in a band or orchestra requires students to listen, to work together for a harmonious product, and individual practice time where they perfect their own part.

3. Music provides children with a means of self-expression. This ability to express what you feel through art often results in improved self-esteem.

The study of music teaches perseverance and improves memory. New research suggests that regularly playing an instrument changes the shape and power of the brain. When you realize that it is only through repetition that you can master the music, you learn the power of perseverance.

5. Playing an instrument enhances coordination. The art of playing requires hand-eye coordination. The musician has to convert the musical notes on a page to specific motor patterns, while adding breathing and rhythm and expression to the mix.

Music performance teaches young people to conquer fear and take risks. By performing in front of others, students learn their own potential and how to overcome anxiety. This mental toughness contributes to mental health and self-confidence.

term health benefits. Not only does music study improve IQ in children, but music therapy can help people recover from strokes, and help treat neurological disorders such as stuttering, autism and Parkinson’s disease. Music training has also been shown to delay the onset of dementia.

learning to play an instrument leads to changes in a child’s brain that makes it more likely they will reach their full cognitive and academic potential. Neuroscientists are demonstrating through the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging that participating in musical activities stimulates a whole network of brain areas. This brain workout leads to improved structure and function through a process called neuroplasticity – in which the brain creates new neural pathways and connections.

Abbotsford’s Amrit Sidhu and the Canadian men’s field hockey teammates were the Cardiac Kids of the recent Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China, winning a silver medal in the most dramatic way possible. Canada isn’t a traditional field hockey powerhouse – most of the time, it’s a major feat just to qualify for big international events. But playing the new Hockey5s version of the sport, Sidhu’s squad saw each of its three playoff games go to a shootout. “By the time the third shootout came, I was like, ‘This is ridiculous,’” Sidhu said with a chuckle. “But it shows our ability to overcome adversity.” Team Canada went 2-2 in the round robin, with wins over South Africa (5-1) and Bangladesh (41), and losses to Spain (6-3) and Australia (5-2). But it was in the playoff rounds that things got really interesting. In the quarter-finals, Canada and Pakistan were tied 7-7 after regulation time, necessitating a shootout which Canada won 3-2. Alan Errington’s men’s squad is coming off a breakthrough 2013 campaign – they earned their first playoff berth in eight Canada West seasons, and won the CW bronze medal. “I think getting in there gives us a bit more belief, and it’s certainly helped us in the recruiting process,” Errington said. “We’ve had more players wanting to come to UFV than ever before. I look at the squad, and it’s the strongest we’ve ever had.” Keeper Mark Village, a second team Canada West all-star in 2012, is battling a concussion and may not be available for opening weekend, but Errington feels good about his goalie depth with Arturo Ortiz of Mexico and rookie Alex Skrzeta of Coquitlam. In the midfield, Errington is unveiling the program’s first-ever recruits from England, Harry Owen and Mason Thompson. Up front, returnee James Najman will be relied upon for goalscoring, while the likes of Ravi Singh and Colton O’Neill anchor a solid back line. The UFV women’s squad is also coming off a playoff berth in 2013, though they were eliminated in the quarter-finals by the Alberta Pandas, and Giesbrecht believes the team is capable of a step forward this season. Kara Delwo, who has excelled in the preseason after undergoing ACL surgery last year, and sophomore Carley Radomski lead the way in the midfield, while rookie striker Monika Levarsky should make an instant impact. ‘An amazing journey’ to Youth Olympics podium

Australia – in the women’s rugby sevens tournament. For the 18-yearold Robert Bateman Secondary grad, even getting to the Youth Olympics was an adventure. The manager of the Canadian rugby team had Kerr’s travel visas, and was supposed to pass that paperwork on to her when she caught a connecting flight out of Vancouver with the rest of the team. But the incoming flight was delayed, and by the time it landed, it was too late for Kerr to retrieve her visa, clear security and get on the plane. So while the rest of the squad got on the flight to China, Kerr was left at the Vancouver airport. “I for sure panicked,” Kerr recounted with a chuckle. “My parents had gone two days before me . . . so I didn’t have anyone to call. I wasn’t really sure what

to do.” Kerr ended up catching a flight the next day, and was able to quickly get into the swing of things at the Youth Olympics. Team Canada dropped its first game 24-10 to host China, but then

It goes on sale here later this year, then for the first time in its 50-year history the Mustang will be exported to more than 120 countries next year. Bernie was a brick mason/artisan and his brick and block buildings are still standing in Abbotsford and Mission. Many homes have new fireplaces, which he proudly designed. His biggest loves were fishing, golfing, growing dahlias and camping with the grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. It’s with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. Born July 12, 1941 in Mission, BC to Grant and Mary Reddeman, passed quietly August 28, 2014. Predeceased by her husband Evan in 2009, she leaves behind 3 children Lyle, Kevin, Michael (Debbie), 7 grandchildren Angela (Chris), Damon, Tasha (Charlie), Jamie (Michelle), Amanda, Kelani, Julie, 8 great grandchildren Ethan, Lyle, Braden, Jake, Ashton, Hayden, Cameron, Logan, 1 great great grandchild Lucas, 2 brothers Stan (Brenda), Michael (Debbie), several nephews and nieces. Mom was raised and lived in Mission most of her life. Her passion was her family and gardening. Dad and Mom were members of the Classic Car Club for several years and spent many Saturday nights at A&W in Langley BC with their car friends. A special thank you to the doctors and staff at Pleasant View Hospital in Mission BC and Mount Ida Mews in Salmon Arm BC for all your kindness and quality care. Born on November 13, 1984 passed away suddenly at the age of 29 on August 19, 2014. He is predeceased by his grandparents, Albert and Edith Hutchins; father, John Alexander MacMillan (Sandy); uncles; Albert, Ambrose, Bert, Frank Hutchins; aunts; Rose Grant and Margaret Holmberg. He leaves behind “His Partner in Crime” - “Buzz”, his Jack Russell; mother, Linda-Lee Hutchins; brothers Allen and Gordon McCallum; sister, Chrystal-Lee McCallum; nephews, nieces, and uncles, aunts, cousins and friends. We will miss him and his infectious laugh and mischievous smile, which always left you wondering what he was up to, or was planning to do. He had a generous and large heart and gave to all who knew him. John loved to play his guitar and according to him, “He was getting pretty damn good” and he was! Going camping, geocaching, and sitting by the campfire with his family and friends and of course “Buzz” his first and foremost best friend, were his favorite past times. After his dad’s passing he said to his mother, “Family is not always blood related - it is for everyone whom you care for and who cares for you. Mrs. Lena Emma Liboiron, late of Abbotsford, BC passed away on September 3, 2014 at the age of 93 at Abbotsford Regional Hospital. She is survived by 4 daughters and 2 sons: Johanne LiboironKrall, Rosalie (Floyd) Combs, Armand (Joan) Liboiron, Therese (Wayne) Fisher, Andre, Doris (Bill) Gibb; 18 grandchildren; and 21 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Marcel Roland Liboiron; daughter, Helen Denise Kane; and grandson, Donald Kane. For many years, Lena was a member of the Catholic Women’s League. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, September 8, 2014 at 11:00 am at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, 33333 Mayfair Avenue, Abbotsford, BC, with Rev. Fr. Anna Weber died peacefully on August 26, 2014 at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital at the age of 95. Anna was born on July 27, 1919 in Rohrbach, Transylvania in Romania. She married Andreas in 1939. In 1954 the family immigrated to Winnipeg and lived there until retiring to Abbotsford in 1979, joining their son and daughter there. They were members of Peace Lutheran Church and the Abbotsford - Mission Alpen Club since 1979. Anna was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Andreas in 2001, as well as each member of her generation in her family and her husband’s family. Anna is survived by her children: Fred (Anne) Weber, daughters Anneliese (Walter) Johannsen, and Alice (Horst) Makus, and her grandchildren Lorne (Karen), Michelle, Mirielle (Jason), Jason (Sara), Brennan (Meryl), and Carl (Sherrie). Also surviving are her great - grandchildren: Katarina, Kurt, Kevin, Keith, Kristoffer, Adam, Lucas, Claire, Joshua, Ava, Cloe and Abigail, as well as many nieces and nephews, in Canada, US, and Germany. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2014 at Peace Lutheran Church, Ware & Marshall Road, Abbotsford.

A triplet born in rural Manitoba, Ed worked the family farm, served overseas in the Canadian Army for three years of war, logged in the Queen Charlottes, and worked as a union carpenter on provincial construction projects. He met and married Connie Hammond in 1966 and settled in Vancouver. After retiring in 1980, they moved to Mission where Ed happily golfed, lawn bowled, played crib, gardened, volunteered with the Hospital Auxillary and the Mission Legion, and generally enjoyed life and his family. Predeceased by Connie and five siblings, Ed is survived by older brother Herb, stepson Barry (Gillian), granddaughter Kate and great granddaughter Emma. Thanks go to the staff of Pleasantview and the Residence at MMH for their friendship and especially to Dr. A Edelsen for his caring support. No flowers by request but your warm thoughts are always appreciated. Ed was a loving, kind and gentle man. He is missed.
