Hope from St. John’s to Thunder Bay... As the Terry Fox Run marks its 34th annual year raising money for cancer research on Sunday, Sept. 14 — with four events in the Tri-Cities — The Tri-City News’s Janis Warren takes a look at the three Canadian communities that signalled milestones for the Port Coquitlam hometown hero along his Marathon of Hope in 1980. On April 12, 1980, Port Coquitlam’s Terry Fox and his best friend, Doug Alward, started the Marathon of Hope — what was supposed to be a cross-country journey to build awareness of and raise money for cancer research. His dream was to collect $1 from each Canadian, which at that time would have amounted to $24 million, for the disease that claimed his right leg. There weren’t many people around to witness Fox dip his artificial leg in the Atlantic Ocean or to scoop a glass jar of water as a keepsake of the journey. But now in the Newfoundland capital, hundreds of people lace up their sneakers to pay tribute to Fox and his heroic efforts by joining the annual Terry Fox Run in St. John’s. Program co-ordinator Heather Goresky Caslor said, because of its unique location, the St. John’s Fox run attracts runners from outside the province. “There are participants who plan their trips to Newfoundland around the run as well as those who travel here because of the run site significance,”she wrote in an email to The TriCity News. This year is no different, with organizers expecting a cancer survivor from Ontario to join in the Sept. 14 trek around Quidi Vidi Lake. Participation levels have been on the rise for the past five years, said event co-chair Debbie Curtis, noting the 2013 run drew more than 800 people — up 100 from the previous year

They make the event special with volunteers from the Memorial University varsity teams, whose athletes take registrations, lead the warmup and act as marshals around the course, Curtis said. As well,“we recognize many of the same families each year and we have tried to make them welcome.” Curtis herself is no stranger to the disease: Both of her parents had the illness and it claimed her father’s life. Cancer has also touched her extended family and friends — yet another reason Curtis has taken part in the Terry Fox Run for more than a quarter of a century, she said.

By the time Terry Fox landed in Canada’s largest city on his Marathon of Hope on July 11, he

was a national sensation. Donations poured in for the Canadian Cancer Society and Fox was busy making public appearances before thousands of well-wishers to spread the word about cancer research. Last year, for the 33rd annual Terry Fox Run, Fox’s older brother Fred opened two events in Toronto: the Wilket Creek Run (Canada’s biggest, organized by the Four Seasons Hotel) and the Upper Canada College run in Forest Hill. UCC organizer Chris Henry said the 2013 run in the tony suburb brought out 1,470 people (including a family from Philadelphia) — up 20% from the previous year — and collected a whopping $187,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation (by comparison, the Stanley Park run brought in $100,000 last year). To date, the UCC site has raised more than $7

million in honour of Fox. Henry said organizers make the annual run day memorable with a picnic barbecue afterward and a kids’ fun zone — complete with mascots, a fire truck and live entertainment. For this year’s 34th Fox run, Paralympic gold medallist and world champion Greg Westlake of the Canadian sledge team will talk to the crowd about Fox’s legacy as well as the Pan Am and Para Pan Am Games, happening next year in Toronto. “Terry set an example for everyone to follow especially Para Pan Am athletes that ‘anything is possible if you try,’” Henry said, adding,“I am quite confident that if the timing had been right, Terry would have entered the games himself.” Asked why he is a part of the Fox run, Henry said he and his wife have had 13 family members get cancer — with only

four surviving. Isadore Sharp, the former president and CEO of the Four Season Hotel who started the annual Fox runs across Canada, was also an inspiration (Henry had worked on the front desk of its second hotel). Next month will be his 23rd year volunteering for the foundation.

By now, the pace of the Marathon of Hope had begun to take a toll on Terry Fox’s body. The determined young man refused to take a day off from his cross-Canada fundraiser for cancer research. His stump was bleeding and his good left leg was tired. After 143 days of running a marathon a day from St. John’s — some 5,373 km in total — Fox decided to stop his journey on Sept. 1, 1980, about 12 km east of Thunder Bay, Ont. to seek medical help be-

cause of chest pains and chronic coughing. Alward drove him to the hospital, where it was learned the cancer had spread to his lungs. He died nine months later. The next year, on June 26, 1982, the city of Thunder Bay erected a 9’ tall bronze statue of Fox along the expressway, set on a 45-tonne granite base with a foundation made of local amethyst. The monument overlooks Lake Superior. Don Morrison, chair of the Thunder Bay Fox Run, said last year’s Fox run (organized by the Lakehead Rotary Club) drew nearly 600 participants and collected $16,196 for the foundation. Usually, the run around Boulevard Lake attracts supporters, cancer survivors and local politicians although in 2005, the Thunder Bay Run had a special guest: Gov. Gen. Michaelle

And although the route does not pass by the Fox monument, the statue is included in the event each year: Traditionally, a colour guard made up of local running club members carry flags and the Terry Fox Run banner from the statue to the start line, adding another four km to their afternoon trek. Morrison, who lost his parents to cancer, got involved in the run 20 years ago when he was the only runner in the event. Naturally, he said,“The Terry Fox Run is near and dear to my heart.”

Alleged shooter to trial in 2015 By Sarah Payne The Tri-CiTy News

The man accused of shooting 26-yearold Jaskaran Singh Sandhu at a Mr. Lube in Coquitlam three years ago will go on trial next fall. Sukhdeep Singh Poony is facing charges of attempted murder, assault with a weapon, possession of a prohibited loaded firearm, pointing a firearm, extortion and uttering threats in connection with a September 2011 incident that left Sandhu with serious injuries. He survived the attempt on his life but was killed 15 months later in Surrey. In late 2013, Crown spokesperson Neil MacKenzie confirmed there was still enough evidence for the trial to proceed. It is set to take place Oct. 13 to Nov. 11, 2015 at B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster.

The Mr. Lube shooting occurred in broad daylight on the afternoon of Sept. 28, 2011. Sandhu was standing near his black Nissan Altima in one of the oil change bays when a man approached and began shooting. About five shots were fired before the suspect jumped in a vehicle and sped away. Police said the shooting was targeted and the victim, while not directly linked with any particular gang or crime group, was known to them. In January 2013, Sandhu’s body was found on Colebrook Road in Surrey in what the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said was a targeted attack. “Investigators continue to search for a motive behind the killing, including the possibility of it being gang related,” said Cpl. Former teacher charged here on trial again in ’15 Plehanov’s teaching licence was cancelled in May By Sarah Payne The Tri-CiTy News

A former Tri-City substitute teacher who was acquitted on sexual assault charges in 2012 will go to trial next year on new sex-related charges. Aleksandr Plehanov, a Burnaby resident, was arrested in Surrey in March 2013 and charged with one count of touching a person under the age of 16 for a sexual purpose and one count of sexual assault. His trial, before a judge alone, at B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster will take place Oct. 19 to 30, 2015. According to Surrey RCMP the alleged victim was the child of a friend of Plehanov’s. The latest charges were approved less than a year after Plehanov was acquitted of charges of sexually assaulting a handful of students throughout School District 43. The touching report-

Former School District 43 TOC Aleksandr Plehanov. edly included girls aged seven and eight sitting on Plehanov’s lap and him touching their bodies, both over and underneath their clothing. It was alleged to have continued until the parents of one girl reported the incident to police in March 2010. Plehanov was arrested by Coquitlam RCMP and charged with 10 counts of sexual interference of a person under 16 and sexual assault involving five complainants. He was also charged with criminal harassment in connection with an alleged incident in June 2010, when he was said to have been spotted in his car outside the home of one of the com-

plainants. When Plehanov was acquitted in November 2012 after a two-week trial, Judge David St. Pierre said the Crown had not proven beyond a reasonable doubt that the accused intended to touch the girls in a sexual manner. “It was clear from the evidence that Mr. Plehanov either was completely ignorant of or ignored the parameters and boundaries that were expected of a teacher by the school board and/or the teaching college relating to appropriate contact between a teacher and students,” St. Pierre said in B.C. Provincial Court in Port Coquitlam. During the PoCo trial, the prosecution argued the incidents allegedly occurred after Plehanov was warned several times that some of his contact with the children was inappropriate and that the court could therefore conclude the contact was for a sexual purpose and not a matter of an unskilled teacher not understanding the boundaries.

Judge St. Pierre found the evidence presented in the trial was unreliable and it was impossible to say whether the contact was incidental or could be proven as criminal. After the acquittal, Plehanov’s lawyer, Lisa Jean Helps, said the administration of justice was upheld and that her client was happy with the results. “He is of course ecstatic, he has maintained his innocence from the beginning,”Helps said. Plehanov’s teaching certificate was suspended in 2010 and was cancelled in May 2014; he has also been ruled ineligible to teach for three years. A public hearing would have to be held before his licence could be reinstated, should he apply. The Ministry of Education, in its reasons for cancelling Plehanov’s licence earlier this year, stated Plehanov “admitted professional misconduct and conduct unbecoming,” contrary to education standards. spayne@tricitynews.com

BACKGROUND

First elected to Coquitlam council in 1972, Lou Sekora was mayor from 1983 to 1997, when he resigned to run for the MP’s position for the Liberals after then Reform MP Sharon Hayes quit. Sekora lost his federal job in 2000 to Conservative MP James Moore but was soon appointed a part-time citizenship judge by Prime Minister Jean Chretien. In the November 2011 general election, Sekora placed fourth in council voting after Selina Robinson, Craig Hodge and Linda Reimer. In the mayor’s race that year, Richard Stewart won with 10,050 votes, well ahead of then councillor Barrie Lynch, who collected 7,591. Richard Stewart was an MLA for CoquitlamMaillardville from 2001 to 2005, appointed MLA Responsible for Francophone Affairs, member of the Government Caucus Committee on the Economy, and chair of the Select Standing Committee on Education. He was elected to Coquitlam council in 2005 and was elected mayor in 2008, and has served two terms in that post.

LOU SEKORA Stewart said he prefers to see budgets developed from long-term plans that take into consideration the needs of various departments but also the demands of citizens, many of whom attend town hall meetings asking for more services. “There is no question I could knock $5 million out of the budget if we wanted to be irresponsible and just stop

maintaining [roads and facilities], that’s easy to do. It would be completely wrong,” he said. “I wouldn’t do that to my children or yours.” With terms now four years instead of three, both incumbents were asked how they could manage the longer term commitment and workload. Asked whether, at the age of 82, he could handle the time and work required of the mayor, Sekora said, “You know

what? That was the way it was. I was working 80 hours a week. Can I still do it? Of course. I’m doing it now, trying to clean up the mess [Stewart] is leaving behind.” Sekora didn’t say who is backing his mayoralty campaign but said he hoped to gain support from “contractors, builders, private people, business people — an awful lot of business people.” He also claimed “unions and the volunteer fire-

And yesterday, Mayor Richard Stewart said he is also running again for the mayor’s seat in the Nov. 15 civic election. Coquitlam’s next mayor will serve four years, not three, under changes brought about by provincial election reform — meaning his or her term will last until 2018. Leadership, taxes and city spending are among the issues Stewart and Sekora are expected to tackle. The mayor said it will be a few weeks before he announces his campaign platform but said he has about 100 volunteers in place and a strong record of accomplishments, including helping to bring the Evergreen Line to the city. “We achieved it and I want to be there on opening day, which is less than two years from now,”Stewart said. Sekora, the 82-yearold former Liberal MP, made no bones about his feelings toward Mayor Richard Stewart. “I can’t sit with Richard for another four years because there’s no leadership,” he said. Sekora also took aim at Stewart and council on budgeting, saying, “I know I can cut $5 to $10 million out of that budget very easy.” That comment is similar to statements Sekora made in the last election campaign and during the most recent council term; he did not offer specific ideas how those cuts would be made. Sekora said when he was considering whether to run again, his options were to run for mayor or not at all. Stewart acknowledged that his leadership style differs from Sekora’s but said he prefers a more collaborative style where councillors are empowered to be part of the decision making process and staff are enabled to make their own hiring decisions. “I’m proud of how we have developed that discipline and that spirit of working together,” he said. “These are different folks and [have] a wide range of backgrounds.” He added that, for the most part, councillors are able to put aside their partisan differences to work together. “It allows people to work together on a better bylaw rather than working separately on a bylaw that opposes,” he said. If elected, Sekora said he wants to lower taxes by reining in municipal spending. But he also wants to build more sports facilities, hire more Mounties and rebuild Place Maillardville community centre.

Terry Fox Ravens head coach Tom Kudaba said his team has been preparing for the season with the expectation that the current labour dispute will be resolved. “It is a volunteer activity [for teachers],”he said. “It is an individual choice people can make.” Coquitlam Teachers’ Association president Charley King said he was disappointed to learn that some coaches are planning to go ahead with the football season despite the job action. “I think there is an awful lot at stake at the moment,” he said. “I think… running teams right now is absolutely the wrong priority.” The Ravens were scheduled to play against Seattle this week but the game was cancelled be-

cause of the labour uncertainty. Kudaba said the league would be holding its annual meeting with members on Sept. 9 to discuss the impact of the strike on the season. Meanwhile, Centennial Centaurs head coach Barry Taitinger confirmed that a game between his team and the New Westminster Hyacks would go ahead as planned on Friday night. Taitinger, who is not a Centennial teacher, noted that the “situation is fluid” and some schools have opted out but he has been holding practices and preparing for the upcoming season after hours and off school grounds. “We have some commitments from other teams in the league,” he said. “We know they are practising. Parents told to keep kids home as labour dispute continues By Diane Strandberg The Tri-CiTy News

The traditional backto-school routine took a dramatic turn in School District 43 and across the province Tuesday as classes remained empty and teachers and CUPE members walked picket lines. Here’s a news round-up from what was supposed to be the first day of school. More info about today’s events are at www.tricitynews.com: • SD43 superintendent Tom Grant and his district leadership team remained hunkered down in meetings for most of the day but district staff posted a note to parents asking them not to send their children to school during the strike. “We do not have the capacity to supervise large

numbers of students nor to offer educational programs. We respectfully ask that parents do not bring children to schools on Tuesday and for the duration of the strike,” Grant said in a statement. • Teachers were on the picket lines in front of their schools by 8:30 a.m. — even earlier in some places. At Pinetree secondary, the mood was solemn. “I would love to be back at school under better circumstances,” said Barbara Moffatt, an English and ESL teacher at Pinetree secondary since 1999. “People are pretty united and I think we’re really disappointed with how the negotiations haven’t been going. I don’t know how long it’s going to take but we’ll just have to take it one day at a time.” • Many CUPE Local 561

members joined the picket line and many are in the same financial straits as striking teachers, noted Dave Ginter, the local president, who said the district’s 1,200 support workers aren’t getting paid during the strike but could get reimbursed after Nov. 30 if they have signed a new contract by that time. Bargaining is expected to start next week, he said. “We’re going to negotiate and move on,” Ginter said, stating that job security is the most important issue for his workers. • Parents scrambling for daycare will get $40 a day from the province’s Temporary Education Support for Parents (TESP). Some likely enrolled in fall camps in Port Moody, Port Coquitlam and Coquitlam that were set up for the

strike. Robert Randall of the Young Actors Project, who usually makes his living teaching the arts to students in SD43 and elsewhere, said his camp GetReady4School.Blogspot. ca runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Burquest Jewish Community Centre and offers drama games and exercises, creative writing, and reading. • Meanwhile, Moe Kopahi, vice-president of University Relations for the Simon Fraser Student Society, is looking at organizing study sessions for Grade 12 students in courses such as physics, math, English and chemistry if the strike continues into October and he gets the OK from his lawyers. ou expect students to be on edge at the prospect of returning to school while parents breathe a quiet sigh of relief after a long summer. But thanks to the ongoing labour dispute, our nerves are all a little frayed as parents make childcare arrangements and the standoff between the BC Teachers’ Federation and the provincial government drags on. Compounding the confusion are union leaders who have underestimated the will of our elected officials, and mixed messages from Education Minister Peter Fassbender, who’s made it clear he has no interest in legislating teachers back to work. Indeed, it appears the BC Liberal government, of all stakeholders, is the least concerned with finding a genuine solution. Why else would it sooner offer parents $40 per day to subsidize childcare, than provide what could be seen as a reasonable offer? This gesture — about equal to the estimated $12 million saved in the strike — is hard to reconcile with “where is the money coming from?”arguments he has advanced. Also overshadowing attempts to mediate the current dispute is the ongoing court case over Bill 28, with which the government, 12 years ago, eliminated teachers’ rights to negotiate class sizes and composition. It’s interesting the BC Liberals are proposing a clause that would allow either side to opt out should they be unhappy with the outcome of the court case. Given that the B.C. Supreme Court has twice found the government bargained in bad faith — a decision under appeal — it would appear only one party could ultimately benefit from such a clause. Given the lack of movement on both sides of the bargaining table, students, parents and other taxpayers can be forgiven for wondering if it’s the so-called leaders who should first be returning to class. – Peace Arch News (Black Press)

Bleak summer for tourism after ferry remake BC VIEWS Tom Fletcher VICTORIA here was an uproar in the B.C. legislature this spring when Transportation Minister Todd Stone went ahead with $19 million in cuts to lowusage coastal ferry routes. The plan had been laid out in detail before last year’s election. It targeted sailings where ridership was in the low teens or even single digits. On some sailings the Transport Canadamandated crew outnumbered the passengers. Despite the cries of doom, most of the sailing reductions have been managed — with one glaring exception. The Discovery Coast Circle Tour route saw its ferry from Port Hardy to Bella Coola replaced with the smallest vessel in the BC Ferries fleet, the open-decked Nimpkish. This move wasn’t a direct response to low usage, a chronic issue with some of the minor

route sailings along the coast. It was to avoid ordering a replacement for the Queen of Chilliwack, which sailed directly between Port Hardy and Bella Coola. This summer, the first leg was consolidated with the Northern Expedition, the vessel that replaced the doomed Queen of the North on the Inside Passage run up to Prince Rupert. At Bella Bella, after a layover of a couple of hours, the Nimpkish took over with space for 16 standard vehicles on its deck and a midnight arrival time in Bella Coola. The direct route had been mainly used by European tourists, who sailed from the Lower Mainland to Victoria, drove the length of the Island, ferried to Bella Coola and drove through the rugged Chilcotin to Williams Lake and back down south to complete the circle tour. The new route incorporated stops in remote outposts Ocean Falls and Shearwater, making it even longer. The Editor, I have recently retired after 35 years of teaching. In the ongoing contract dispute between teachers and the government, there have been many references to “special needs students” and “specialist teachers.” I was one of those specialist teachers who saw her caseload skyrocket in the last decade. During my career, I worked under Social Credit, NDP and BC Liberal governments and I witnessed a long parade of teaching practices and trends come and go. In the first two thirds of my career, there were certainly bumps in the road but, overall, public and governmental support for students with special needs underwent a radical and positive transformation. We evolved from segregation to inclusion, and from a strictly remedial approach to one that embraced prevention and early intervention. We realized fairness was not based on giving each child the same but on giving each child what he or she needed. This change in philosophy and practice required some financial support but it was well worth it. Sadly, under Christy Clark’s leadership as education minister and, now, as premier, our public education system has devolved and is in danger of causing irreparable harm to some of those in its care. Students with identified learning disabilities are among those who have been most seriously affected. I find that many people have a limited understanding of what a learning disability is. Learning disabled (LD) students are not mentally challenged or slow learners. To receive this designation, students can test out as having an IQ ranging from low average all the way up to the gifted range, but are seriously underachieving in school due to their neurological “wiring.” Their learning disabilities affect how they perceive, process or store information. LD students are all very different from one other and they all have the potential to be successful if they are given instruction that is tailored to their particular learning styles and needs. Some of the brightest, most creative students I have ever known, are also LD. Prior to the contract stripping and ongoing cutbacks of the last 12 years, I was a resource room teacher with a case-

I would like to contact the letter writer, Larry Ryan, and pursue the class action suit against the province as I also pay taxes and my 13-year-old doesn’t qualify for the $40-a-day subsidy. There’s only one problem: This government doesn’t respect or abide by court decisions. It has been told twice by the Supreme Court of B.C. that its actions are illegal yet refuses to acknowledge the ruling and make amends. In the past decade, as a learner support teacher, my caseload exploded to encompass all types of students with learning challenges, covering up to seven classes at one time. My caseload now included the learning disabled, slow learners, mentally handicapped, English language learners and the average child who needed specific support in one or more subject areas. No matter how I juggled my schedule, I could never meet all the needs. I could no longer offer intense intervention to students with learning disabilities unless I shortchanged all the others in my care. I retired this June and I am blessed to have an infant granddaughter. When she begins her journey through school, I hope she and her peers

B.C. eyes looser liquor penalties for bars, stores By Jeff Nagel Black Press

The province is contemplating changing how it punishes pubs, restaurants and liquor stores that violate liquor rules about over-serving and selling to minors. Business owners have asked government for a more flexible penalty system and a month-long online consultation running to Sept. 30 asks stakeholders for input on the options. One possibility to be explored is lower or higher penalties. According to a government discussion paper released Friday, B.C. penalties are stiffer than most other provinces. “Decreasing penalties would bring British Columbia in closer alignment with the average among the provinces,” it says, noting government must balance business hardship and the need for deterrence for public safety. A first offence for a B.C. liquor establishment typically means a one- to three-day suspension for overcrowding and 10 days or a $7,500 fine for selling to a minor (the first-offence maximum is $10,000 and 15 days for serving minors.) Alberta bars have a choice of paying a fine or serving a suspension — which is one of the ideas up for consideration — and most operators there choose the fine, which is typically $500 to $1,500 on a public safety first offence. The stiffest penalties are in Ontario, where suspensions of 21 days and

must close entirely. That raises the question of whether fines are a better option, the paper says. It adds the penalties must spur liquor violators to voluntary compliance and not be so low they’re merely treated as a cost of doing business. Fines or suspensions get more onerous with repeat offences, potentially leading to licence cancellations. But a second offence is only counted as such if it happens within 12 months of the first one — after a year the slate is clean. One option is to in-

crease that period to two or three years, which would put more pressure on repeat offenders whose subsequent penalties would be more severe. Another question asks if repeat offences should be fines rather than suspensions. The consultation is in response to recommendations flowing from the liquor policy review headed by BC Liberal MLA John Yap. “We have been asking for review of the penalty schedule for a while,” said Jeff Guignard, executive director of the Alliance

of Beverage Licensees, which represents a broad spectrum of bars, stores and other liquor sellers. He said a $7,000 fine for failing to check an ID could be a month of profit for a mom-and-pop rural liquor store in northern B.C., but negligible to a big Vancouver bar. Guignard also favours some mechanism to reward an outlet’s good compliance over past years, perhaps akin to how motorists with a long crash-free record build up safe driving discounts with ICBC. There were 13,415 in-

spections of liquor licensees last year, resulting in just under 400 contravention notices or nearly 3% of inspections. But of those, less than half (171) led to enforcement action being taken. International students at Simon Fraser University are being gouged on their health insurance premiums, says the university’s Teaching Support Staff Union. Derek Sahota of the TSSU says international students at SFU are paying, on average, more than double for their health insurance than students at other B.C. post-secondary institutions, including UBC, Kwantlen Polytechnical University and UVic. Last fall, more than 4,000 international students were enrolled at SFU, representing about 16% of the school’s total student population. Sahota says the $353 international students pay for health insurance provided by Guard.me is almost triple the cost of the university’s previous health insurance provider, which charged $126 per student. “We have clear evidence of a public institution who forced their students into the most expensive option when students would have chosen a different option,” says Sahota. Guard.me is a Canadian company that specializes in insurance

for students studying or working abroad, as well as for teachers, faculty and staff. International students enrolling at SFU must pay for a private insurance plan to cover their health care needs until they are eligible to

enrol in the BC Medical Services Plan. But Tim Rahilly, SFU’s associate vice-president of students, says many international students don’t buy medical insurance on their own. “We have a duty of

insurance, it’s difficult for them to opt out of the school’s plan and they’re automatically re-enrolled year after year. Over the course of a student’s career at SFU, that can add up to thousands of dollars.

He wants the university to give some of that money back. “These students are owed more than an apology,” says Sahota. “They are owed a refund of the money that SFU has charged them.”

Share Alcohol and Drug Program invites you to attend any or all of its latest education series. The program — which starts tonight (Wednesday) and runs through January — is open to everyone in the Tri-Cities and offers important information for those who have an alcohol or drug problem or for those concerned about their use. It will help those people affected by others’ use, to understand addicts and addictive behaviour. There is no cost for this group.Topics will vary from week to week as outlined below.The format consists of a video, a brief presentation, and open discussion. Topics are: • Sept. 3: Use, misuse, abuse — how people become addicted. • Sept. 10: Medical aspects and effects of alcohol and drug abuse. What happens to the body and mind under the influence. • Sept. 17: Alcohol — how dependence develops; controlled using; effects on pregnant women. Also you will learn briefly about drinking, drugs and driving. • Sept. 24: Cocaine and crystal meth — the struggle to recover, and what long-term recovery looks like. • Oct. 8: Marijuana — a second-class addiction? • Oct. 15: Heroin and other common depressants/opiates — addiction, struggle and recovery. • Oct. 22: Trauma — how substance misuse often occurs with people who have experienced childhood abuse. fter three moves and a $1.1 million renovation, the Appleyard/ Centennial House is ready for its final role as an addition to the Port Moody Arts Centre (PMAC). And a former resident of the century-old home couldn’t be happier about its transformation. Geoff Goodship, who grew up in the home in the 1930s and 1940s, told The Tri-City News last month the home’s reclamation by the PMAC society is“like a fairy tale.” It gives him goosebumps to think that the place he spent hours playing and growing up as a kid will now be home to artists, musicians and other performers. “When I came home from the hospital [in 1932], it was the house I was raised in,” notes Goodship, a former school administrator who

I know that my grandma would be positively delighted.” Goodship and his wife, Freddie, will be guests of honour at the Sept. 6 grand opening of the new arts centre addition. On their visit, the couple will get a tour of the new building with its glass atrium, studios and performing arts parlour. Goodship says he can’t wait for the opportunity to see the house in its new incarnation and view what touches remain from the

building he grew up in. After all, the 82-year-old man has many memories of the home that was built roughy around 1910 at 2717 Clarke St., by his grandfather Frederick Appleyard. His grandmother, Minnie, was kept in the dark about the construction details. Goodship suspects she never forgave her husband for that, although the couple was happily married for many years. They eventually moved to the bungalow next door and Goodship’s family moved into the big house. He remembers the first phone that was installed in the home.“I had to stand on tiptoes on a chair to reach the mouthpiece,” he recalls. The call for volunteers to take part in Paul Walde’s site-specific sound performance project in the Jumbo Glacier area of the Kootenays last year was a bit perplexing. The intermedia artist, musician and curator had asked for musicians to rise early in late July, travel up a logging road and perform an oratorio — penned by Walde — on top of the Farnham Glacier, the most accessible of the five Jumbo glaciers that are left over from the last ice age. In return for their efforts, the musicians would receive a limited edition artwork from Walde and credit in the subsequent video installation of Requiem for a Glacier. Walde said it wasn’t an easy task to assemble the performers nor was it easy to get up to the location. Only a few days before, the dangerous road up was cleared from a mudslide. There was quite a bit of anxiety beforehand if it would happen at all, he said.

As well, he has “performative vignettes” where musicians are playing solos in remote areas. Walde said he didn’t know what the end product would be when he was filming. “We knew it would be based on elements of the performance,” he said “We didn’t want a concert or music video. We wanted a new experience that moves at a slow pace. It’s almost like watching a painting unfold in front of you.” For the Coquitlam exhibit, Walde said the curator, Evergreen’s visual arts manager Gregory Elgstrand, has made a room within a room that will have a 24’ x 8’ screen for the projection as well as mementos, photos and altered images from the Jumbo journey. • The opening reception for Requiem for a Glacier is on Sept. 6 from 2 to 5 p.m., with artist Paul Walde attending. But when the day came for the 55 musicians — ranging in age from 12 to 84 — to play the four-movement memorial work, the sky was blue and the conditions were perfect, Walde said. On Saturday, the University of Victoria associate professor will open his Requiem at Coquitlam’s Evergreen Cultural Centre, a remount of the installation that was commissioned by the Langham Cultural Centre in Kaslo and displayed last fall. The work not only highlights his original 37-minute long composition but also sheds light on the landscape, which is due to be transformed into a year-round, $450-million recreational resort. Walde often ties his art with climate change themes, highlighting the loss of wild spaces. For the “pre-emptive” memorial project, Walde captures a time before the commercial development takes place. In the video, there is footage of the glacier and scenes of where it is melting.

Faculty, staff show their artistic sides By Janis Warren THE TRI-CITY NEWS

Place des Arts opens its new gallery season tomorrow (Thursday) with three exhibits — one of which puts the spotlight on the Maillardville centre’s own teachers and staff. And among the 35 ArtFeat pieces in the Mezzanine Gallery is a fantasy realism comic drawing by one of Place des Arts’ newest employees: Oliver McTavishWisden, the fine and performing arts programmer. Formerly with the city of Port Coquitlam parks department, McTavishWisden will show The Scout’s Memory. The drawing, he said, is part of a series called The Scout, which traces the story of a 10-year-old street urchin who wants to be a superhero and help other kids by uncovering monsters under beds, fighting bullies and rescuing cats up trees, for example. “He lives in a junk yard but he’s also a defender of youth,” McTavish-Wisden told The Tri-City News last month. The Scout’s Memory stand-alone drawing is from the fifth issue in his three-year-old series that’s now being published in Cloudscape Comics’ eight anthology,

In that issue, McTavish-Wisden describes how Scout and his pet crow became friends, as told by other kids in their dark community. McTavish-Wisden said he got hooked on comics while reading science fiction books and comics about childhood such as the animated Calvin and Hobbes and Tekkonkinkreet series. But though he likes to draw, McTavish-Wisden also has a knack for writing comic plots. Soon, he will have a short story printed in an anthology called Chilly Tales by 11th Dimension Press, a Toronto publisher. Th e d raw i n g f o r

his comic, 45 Minute Revolutions, was done by Ksenia Kozhevnikova and tells the story about Mike Collins — the third (and relatively unknown) astronaut on the Apollo 11 mission to the moon.
