Binders remained closed and new shoes were left unscuffed as the ongoing teachers’ strike forced the cancellation of the first day of classes at public schools across Abbotsford. With exploratory negotiations having broke down Saturday between the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) and the province, teachers picketed local schools Tuesday. While the province says the BCTF’s demands are unaffordable, local teachers say they’re sacrificing their wages to demand smaller classes for students. “I’m doing this for my kids,” said Yale secondary math teacher Tom van Hunenstijn. “It’s a long-term view that has a short-term cost.” Robert Bateman secondary science teacher Sarah Bacon echoed those thoughts. “We’re giving up our pay to stand up for kids,” she said. Teachers said the ongoing strike cast a pall over recent weeks, as the normal excitement for the coming school year was replaced with uncertainty and anger. “Usually we’re all pretty excited coming back, and this year just didn’t have that same feeling,” said Sandy Hill elementary physical education teacher Kevin Chesney. “I’d rather be in school, but the government sees it a different way.” There had been optimism Friday evening as both sides sat down for long talks with mediator Vince Ready. But he abandoned the negotiations the next day, declaring that the two sides were still too far apart for mediation to be productive. While Ready said the teachers and the province were too far apart on both wages and benefits, BCTF president Jim Iker said the two sides were close on wages. The government has offered $40 a day to parents of students under the age of 13 to subsidize child care during the strike. Payments will take place at the end of the strike and consume all the $12 million per day the government expects to save during the work stoppage. The subsidy has led teachers to accuse the government of undermining public education. And it hasn’t been enough to ease the

worries of many parents. A small group of parents and children took part in a rally outside of Abbotsford South MLA Darryl Plecas’ office Tuesday morning. “I felt that it was important for parents at a local level to have a voice,” said organizer David Cusick, who has a seven-year-old daughter in the public system. Cusick said he wants to see the teachers’ class size and composition requests met and “we want to see them paid competitively with other provinces.” Cusick said it’s unfortunate his daughter, Sydney, cannot start school on time, but that her friends and classmates have needs that currently aren’t being met in the classroom. Corinne Martens, who has children in Grades 4

and 9, said she is frustrated by the ongoing labour dispute, but supports teachers. “I support quality public education and I feel that it is being compromised and it is at-risk right now.” While public schools remain closed, independent schools opened as planned Tuesday. It was “business as usual” at Abbotsford Christian School (ACS), according to executive director Julius Siebenga, but the school was still seeing the effects of the strike. “We’ve been busier than we ever have at this time of year from a new enrolment standpoint,” Siebenga said. Just last week, ACS’s middle school signed up 10 new families, a figure that is far from normal at this time of year.

Day camps during strike Some local groups are holding day camps this week during the teachers’ strike. The Reach Gallery Museum Abbotsford (32388 Veterans Way) hosts drop-in art camps for kids ages six to 12. The camps will run while teachers are on strike. Two camps per day will take place on Wednesdays, Fridays and Mondays from 9 to 11:45 a.m. and from 12:15 to 3 p.m. They are held on a drop-in basis, with payment for each day being taken the morning of the camp. Kids may attend both camps each day, with care being provided during the 30-minute break between the sessions. The cost is $20 per child for a half day or $40 for the full day. Doors open at 8:30 a.m. and close at 3:30 p.m. sharp

Also offering day camps during the strike is the EcoDairy on Sumas Way. “Dairy Drop-ins” run Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 11:45 a.m. for ages four to seven and from 12:15 to 3 p.m. for ages eight to 12. More than 100 people turned up for a public meeting on Thursday evening to learn about a proposal to build a transitional housing village for the homeless on Valley Road. The project, put forward by a group called the Abbotsford Dignitarian Society, has proposed to create a sanctioned homeless community on a privately owned lot off the AbbotsfordMission Highway near the transfer station. The concept will have to go before council, likely sometime in October, as the city would need to amend the official community plan (OCP) to designate a portion of the property as a temporary residential use permit. That would authorize the proposal, which includes up to 40 sleeping cabins, communal laundry, kitchen and bathroom structure and a care-

ety, said she believes that the idea would work. “If something is to be done for the homeless, it has to be done so we’re proud of it. If we’re proud of it, we’ll take care of it.” Bentley said she understands that some people are concerned by the proposal, citing issues like noise and people entering onto private property. But Bentley has been actively involved in coming up with rules for the village, which includes residents respecting themselves, others and all property. She said there will be no drug use or selling of drugs or services in public ares. Gruban said that they want to keep the site low-barrier, which means they won’t turn away people who use drugs. Instead, he said, they will not allow drug use in the public spaces or communal areas, but won’t prohibit use in the private space of residents. “What people do in their cabins is up to them.” He said that way the village is open and accepting to those with addictions, but members of the public could come in and meet residents and not be exposed to drug use. Bentley added that each person living there would have to contribute a certain number of hours to community work and maintaining the site. Though Bentley acknowledges concerns about whether the project will be best to assist the homeless, she asked “but what do we have now?”

An Abbotsford man who just last spring was sentenced to 10 months in jail for dealing drugs is back behind bars. Russell Mayhew was arrested last week by Abbotsford Police Department’s Emergency Response Team (ERT) in the 2000 block of Sandalwood Crescent in connection to an Aug. 16 break-in. “We were actively looking for him,” said Const. Ian MacDonald. Police initially thought they might be dealing with a “barricade situation,” but that Mayhew later surrendered,

MacDonald said. Mayhew, who was previously described as “gang-involved” by police in 2012, has been charged with breaking and entering, uttering threats and mischief. He is also charged with two counts of assault and two counts of breaching an undertaking. He was previously on bail after being charged in June with assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm and two counts of possessing a prohibited weapon without a licence. Mayhew is “very well known” to police, MacDonald said. He was arrested three times in a five-month span in 2012.

A refreshing change of city hall attitude Mark

Other Hand I’ve been pleasantly surprised over the past few weeks in interactions with staff at city hall. The attitude within the civic bureaucracy seems to have changed from an often negative perspective to one that, in at least some departments, is refreshingly positive. While I have no real basis for the assumption, it seems that over the past three years the city has become more cooperative, and when a citizen raises an issue, it is dealt with in both a timely and helpful manner. Whether to credit the mayor, or the new administration – which in a way must be a credit to the mayor since only one councillor is new – approaches to situation resolution are definitely different.

For example, I recently had an issue in my neighbourhood. Not only did the mayor respond, he passed the issue on to the city administrator who had senior staff contact me. Within a short period of time, action was begun. As it turned out the entire issue was not, at least in my opinion, entirely resolved. I texted the senior staff member who replied immediately despite being on vacation. Then this past long weekend, I again texted him, not expecting a reply until he returned to the office on Tuesday. Instead he got back to me immediately, asked for a more descriptive email to which he again replied, and yesterday morning at 9 a.m. both he and a staffer were on site to review the issue. This dedication to the job, and the common-sense effort to resolve my concerns, is quite remarkable in comparison to a few years ago when the prevailing attitude

seemed to be more no than yes. I have been dealing with the parks department, not staffers who work on the development side of the city. Perhaps there things have changed too, although business development and the job creation that comes with it still appears stagnant in comparison to what is occurring in communities to the east and west. Development and investment in Langley, for example, is as remarkable in its growth as is the lack of it in Abbotsford. Perhaps it’s the economy, or our location at the “fringe” (though development in Chilliwack seems to have leapfrogged us) that investors overlook our community. Or it could be that bureaucratic delays and restrictive bylaws are turning people away. My guess is that in other rapidly expanding communities, when an investor

proposes a project, the response from their city halls is “how quickly can you open” rather than be handed a lengthy, timeconsuming list of commitments and costs than must be met before any construction approvals are granted. However, from what I have recently experienced, there is a sea-change of attitude in some departments at city hall. It would be comforting to know that similar positive activity is occurring throughout the bureaucratic hierarchy, soon supported by a surge in business investment and job creation. Granted, no one can force investment here, but someone can make the road to long-term economic prosperity infinitely more smooth and responsive. In the meantime, I must give credit where it is due. Show raises thousands The Goddess Movement fitness studio in Abbotsford raised thousands of dollars for an outreach program for vulnerable women at a recent aerial arts theatre show in Abbotsford. Owner Aryn Savard, along with her team of aerialists, dancers, performers and other professionals, raised a total of $6,722 from their show. The money will go towards the Women’s Resource Society’s Warm Zone program, which provides counseling, outreach, safety planning, addictions support, nutritious meals and a place to call home for vulnerable women in Abbotsford. XC series will still run despite strike It’s been taking place for more then 30 years, and even though the teachers’ strike is ongoing, the Lafarge Elementary/ Middle Schools Cross Country Grand Prix is still a go. This year’s edition of the popular series will take place at Clearbrook Park on four consecutive Wednesdays, commencing Sept. 17. The Valley Royals-hosted events offer competition for runners in Grades 4 to 8 and usually draw in excess of 1,000 participants per meet. At the conclusion of the four-week series, prizes are awarded to the top fin-

as the local track played host to two BC Cup races (including the finals) and two Canada Cup races. The events drew 155 riders, mostly from around B.C. but from destinations as far afield as New Zealand. In the end, Abbotsford BMX athletes excelled in the BC Cup, and the elite national-team riders in the Canada Cup gave the youngsters something to aspire to. Tory Nyhaug, a 2012 Olympian from Coquitlam who took silver at the World Championships in July, won the elite male division in Saturday’s Canada Cup races. Trent Jones, a New Zealand national teamer, finished second, while a trio of Team Canada riders – James Palmer, Mischa Partridge and Cory Walsh – finished third through fifth, in that order. Canadian national team members Amelia Walsh (elite female) and Tanner Vandenhoven (elite male) also won their respective division championships. The final BC Cup standings saw eight Abbotsford BMX riders finish atop their divisions: Aiden Grecht (11 expert male), Alex Grecht (13 expert male), Aiden Webber (14 expert male), Chayce Cooper (11 expert female), Adicus Bird (12 expert female), Alison Grecht (14 expert female), MacKenzie McHale Boulter (16 expert female) and Jeff Trefry (cruiser men 35-39). Other top-three finishers included Justin Trefry (second, 6 novice male), Oliver Gust (second, 7 novice male), Lucas Zilcosky (second, 8 novice male), Benjamin Leslie (second, 15 expert male), Brianna Trefry (second, 8 novice female), Zoe McHale Boulter (second, 10 expert female), Mackay Leslie (second, championship junior men) and Owen Green (third, 11 intermediate male). “We’ve had a lot of success this year, and a lot of growth,” Abby BMX president Michelle Landers said. “We’ve almost doubled our club membership this year. We seem to get three or four new riders every week. “Because we’re Canada’s national training facility, we have national team riders practicing at the track all the time. It’s amazing for the kids to watch them.”

Nick Taylor got off to a tremendous start to the Web.com Tour playoffs, posting a top10 finish at the Hotel Fitness Championship in Fort Wayne, Ind. The 26-year-old Abbotsford golfer fired a scorching six-under 66 in Sunday’s final round, which sent him soaring 17 spots on the leaderboard to tie for ninth place at 12 under par for the tourney. Taylor earned $27,000 for his finish, and put himself in solid position with three playoff events still to come. Twenty-five PGA Tour cards have already been handed out based on the Web. com Tour regular-season results – with one of those cards going to Abbotsford’s Adam Hadwin – and 25 more are up for grabs based on earnings during the playoffs. Hadwin, who finished fourth on the Web.com Tour money list during the regular season, missed the Hotel Fitness cut by four strokes after carding rounds of 75 and 72. He’ll be on the PGA Tour next season regardless of playoff results, but he’s battling to improve his priority ranking. It is with sadness the family of Ed Harder share his sudden passing in Abbotsford, BC. Ed enjoyed a 48 year career in the automotive industry in Moose Jaw where he met and married Bernice Tanner in November 1955. They enjoyed 39 years living in that city, making many friends, being involved in church, other activities and where Ed began his involvement with the Gideons that carried on for 34 years. In 1960 God blessed their home with a son Melvin who has been a caring, helpful son with a heart of love and generosity. When Mel married Nancy Parkins in 1981 Ed loved and appreciated her as much as his own daughter. After retirement Ed and Bernice moved to Abbotsford in 1994 where Ed again made a host of friends. He loved woodworking and made beautiful items from wood, the latest being unique ball point pens of different designs. Living in Abbotsford he loved his weekly coffee break with friends. His sense of humor will be greatly missed. Ed was predeceased by his parents and two sisters. He is survived by his wife Bernice of 58 years, son Melvin (Nancy) of Barrie, ON, three grandsons; Patrick, Mitchell, Trevor, two brothers Elmer and Bill and a host of nieces and nephews. Memorial service was held at Central Heights Church.

At the age of 88 Byron passed away peacefully in Abbotsford Hospital surrounded by loved ones. Byron was born in Brandon, Manitoba, one of 12 siblings to parents Tilly and Joseph. Dad was preceded in death by his wife Henny Kindrid, his daughter Diana and is survived by his children Karen, Brian, Larry their spouses, his grandchildren Tiffiny, Christy, Jennifer, Matthew, Andrew, his great grandchildren Ceasar & Randi. Byron is survived by his partner of 11 years Flo Evans her children Janice, Dale and grandchildren Travis & Erin. His life had many adventures which led him to joining the Navy at a young age where he traveled to many parts of the world. He remained active in life sharing his love of Black Mountain Ranch with his children and grandchildren to playing cards every week with his partner Flo and friends. He will be missed and loved always.
