Discover your city If you’re new to Kamloops, welcome! Here is a little information about the city’s major areas. Whether it’s navigating to a classmate’s house or searching for a new coffee spot, this page will definitely come in handy. Aberdeen: Located on the slope of the southern hills overlooking Kamloops, this is one of the fastest growing areas in the city. Aberdeen is within walking distance of Upper and Lower Sahali and is home to Costco and the Aberdeen Mall (Kamloops’ biggest shopping centre). Sahali: On the south shore of the Thompson River, above the downtown core, Sahali is divided into two parts: Upper Sahali, which is mainly residential, and Lower Sahali, which is just minutes from TRU and includes a number of shopping destinations, grocery stores and restaurants as well as the Tournament Capital Centre (TCC). If you’re living on campus, Sahali will soon become a familiar part of town. Downtown: Boutiques, restaurants, and coffee

shops make this a great place to explore. Don’t forget to catch a game at the Interior Savings Centre and check out the museum and Kamloops Art Gallery (KAG). North Kamloops: Just across the Overlanders Bridge from downtown, North Kamloops (or the North Shore) is home to a vibrant retail area, McArthur Island Park, and plenty of restaurants, pubs, bars and art galleries. Brocklehurst: Brock is located northwest of the city’s downtown core and is about 30 minutes via bus from TRU. Brock is home to Kamloops Airport, the Kamloops Golf and Country Club, a Cooper’s grocery store, Tim Hortons and several other small businesses. There are many other areas to explore in Kamloops (including Westsyde, Pineview, Valleyview and Dallas). TRU Student Oath

Know your rights and responsibilities as a TRU student

As a student, you should know what your rights are as well as your responsibilities. The TRU calendar is the place to find all the information you need regarding attendance requirements and general student information. From academic integrity – which will be highlighted on every class syllabus you receive this year – to addressing disagreements between you and your faculty members, and even examination requirements, the TRU calendar (tru.ca/calendar) and website (tru.ca/policy) hosts all essential policies and procedures. Additional information can also be accessed through the TRUSU Members’ Advocate, who provides information and support in areas ranging from academic appeals to housing and tenancy. trusu.ca/advocacy/members-advocate In the end, you will get as much from your post-secondary experience as you put into it. Hard work, dedication and a willingness to go that extra mile will help you reach your goals. So before you embark on this semester and the ones to follow, sit back and think – what do I want from this term and what are the steps I have to take to achieve my goals? TRU has the resources to help and you have the ambition to make it happen. Make this year your best year yet.

How can I make the most of my time at TRU? Attending lectures and reading books is just the beginning of your educational experience at TRU. Learning through engagement inside and outside of the classroom is pivotal to academic and workplace success. So, how can students find opportunities to engage in their learning? TRU helps students form mutually beneficial connections and partnerships both on campus and within the community. The office of Student and Community Engagement supports a variety of experiential learning opportunities including certificates, peer leader programs, community involvement and institutionally recognized workshops that enhance the education of learners and help students develop skills to ease the transition from classroom to workplace. Students are encouraged to drop into the office (OM 1468) at Students Corner with any questions, and are never turned away without an answer or a connection to the best available opportunities.

Some program initiatives within the Student and Community Engagement office include: • Leadership in Environmental Sustainability Certificate • Global Competency Certificate • Engagement Ambassador Program • Co-curricular Program For more information on the programs listed above or to find out additional opportunities at TRU, please visit tru.ca/services/beyond or contact us at engagement@tru.ca
