Public hearing on a parcel of land that could see a 36-lot residential development is slated for Sept. 2 in View Royal. Several bylaws related to a property off Chilco Rd. adjacent to Mill Hill Regional Park and Robin Hill Park will be up for public input. The applicant proposes to create a 36–lot residential subdivision with a 0.38 hectare park in the southeast half of the site, leaving an existing residence on a 0.8 ha large lot residential property and 1.6 ha of park in the northwest half. A development permit would be required for the protection of the natural environment, its ecosystems and biological diversity and the protection of development from hazardous conditions. Detailed information on the bylaws as well as reports and studies can be obtained at the Town of View Royal municipal office in the Development Services Department between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday to Friday until Aug. 29 and between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 2. Anyone unable to attend the hearing can mail, fax, email or hand deliver comments to the Town of View Royal by no later than 4:30pm on Sept. 2. The

Regional bus service to expand for fall

After extensive public input, B.C. Transit is adding another 5,000 hours of bus service in the Capital Region. Effective Sept. 2, late night service on Friday and Saturday nights, currently available on Routes 4, 6 and 14 will be extended to routes 15X Dockyard/UVic, 27 Gordon Head, 28 Majestic and 50 Langford/ Downtown. Service hours are also being expanded on Route 4 Hillside/ UVic, Route 8 Interurban/Oak Bay and Route 39 UVic/Royal Roads to better serve customers who are travelling to the region’s post-secondary institutions. The current Route 6 Royal Oak/Esquimalt is also being restructured. Esquimalt residents will now be better served by the Route 15X Dockyard/ UVic with direct access to UVic, Camosun College Lansdowne campus and the Royal Jubilee Hospital. The new Route 6 Downtown/Royal Oak will travel from the downtown core to the Royal Oak exchange along Quadra Street. “We listened to the more than six thousand custom-

Bentinck Island firing range in action

There’s a slight chance residents could hear action on Bentinck Island this week. The demolition range on Bentinck Island will be in use 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Aug. 28 and 29 as well as Sept. 2 to 5 and Monday Sept. 8. The island near Race Rocks in the Strait of Juan de Fuca is used as a terrestrial demolition range by the Canadian Armed Forces and residents will likely be unaware of any activity except on days when environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity and wind direction affect how far the sound will travel. The public is reminded that no unauthorized person may enter this area and trespassing is prohibited.

“We just had a couple bad innings in the first two games that put us in a situation where we were outside looking in,” Ross said. “After that we woke up.” They went on to “destroy” Philippines 11-1 then beat the U.S. West region 8-1 and host Oregon 9-1. “A lot of teams and organizers came up and wished that we were in the top four to compete for the championship,” Ross said. “A lot of them said we should have been.”

The coach is proud of his players. They were good defensively, posted some strong pitching and avoided errors after the early glitches. “I call them the lunch box brigade. They come to work to do their job and you ask them for overtime and they don’t complain,” Ross said. “It’s one of the hardest working teams I’ve seen in a long time. Twenty-year-old composer Jared Richardson is hoping to make a very special album. Instead of making an album in a home studio or in his basement like many young musicians are doing, the View Royal resident has started a Kickstarter campaign to raise $45,000 to hire the entire 60-member orchestra from the Victoria Symphony to perform nine original compositions for his first full-length studio album. “I think it would be a great honour and a very special thing. I have (had) a big connection with the Victoria Symphony over the past four years so it is exciting to be able to (reach for) this,” Richardson said. “To have an actual album recorded by a professional orchestra, it would take my

career to a whole new level.” The Spectrum high school graduate connected with the Victoria Symphony approximately four years ago after submitting one of his compositions to be performed by the orchestra. Not only did he end up selected as one of five across the province to secure a coveted reading by the symphony, he ended up impressing the Victoria Symphony’s musical director and conductor Tania Miller along the way. “The first time Jared had a piece read by us it was an instant success. His sense of how to (compose) for orchestra was vastly superior to what you would expect from a 16 year old,” Miller said. “I thought it was so successful I decided to put it into the Symphony Splash and Jared became the first ever young splash composer at the age of 16.” Miller said she is extremely picky about

the music she selects for their signature annual event, yet she decided to perform his song Winds of Kananaskis to a crowd of approximately 40,000 spectators. Different compositions were performed by the Victoria Symphony for two years after that, until he left the University of Victoria’s music program to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston in the hopes of following in the footsteps of John Williams and Howard Shore as music composers for movies. It is a dream he continues to work toward today. “I think it can be done, he is an artist and it is about people being inspired by his art, what is great about his music is he has already inspired a lot of people in Victoria. He’s really got a name already for himself and a lot of people are (already) supporting him,” Miller said. “It would be such a thrill we will look back someday and Jared Richardson will be a highly successful film

composer and we will say ‘we were there from the beginning.’” Only $1,500 of the $45,000 was funded at the time of the News deadlines and Richardson admitted there is a long way to go, his goal but despite the pressure of a deadline to reach his goal by Oct. 13 and the potential for Kickstarter to return every dollar pledged if he misses his goal by even a penny, he is confident he will have his album in 2015 when he expects it to be complete. “It is a pretty huge but I think there is a good chance of it happening,” Richardson said. “I am working on now doing everything I can to get the word out about it and we will see where it goes from there.” Visit Jared’s Kickstarter campaign at Jared-richardson.com. alim@goldstreamgazette.com

Live your life and pass it on Organ donation isn’t for everyone. Depending on religious beliefs or personal preference, some people choose not to donate their organs after death. But for those of us who don’t have any stipulations about organ donation, the question remains – why don’t more of us register to become donors? According to B.C. Transplant, there is a critical shortage of organs available for transplant not only in B.C., but all over the world. In 2013, B.C. had the highest living donor rate in the country of 28 per million and 14.5 per cent million in deceased donor rate – equalling the national average. There were 346 transplants and the number of organ donors (130 living and 67 deceased) increased as well. But the numbers are still very low compared to the number of people that die in the province each year. Volunteers with B.C. Transplant say some people still aren’t aware they even have to register to become a donor. Fifteen years ago, the method of becoming a donor included simply putting a dot on a driver’s licence. Now, that method is no longer valid and people wishing to become donors must register directly with B.C. Transplant. After death, each person has the ability to help up to 75 different people and save or extend the lives of many as seven people by becoming an organ donor. Currently there are 473 people in B.C. waiting for vital organs,, approximately 10 of which live somewhere in Greater Victoria. As of June, only 38 per cent of people living in Greater Victoria had registered as donors. The numbers speak for themselves.. More of us need to step up and take a few minutes it requires to register as an organ donor at transplant.bc.ca. You could end up saving a life right in your own backyard. What do you think? It started as a winery, and the conversion needed only local government approval because the production facility was already considered and taxed as light industrial. Victoria Gin has been a model for the government’s push to allow distilleries, breweries or meaderies on farmland. Given the B.C. Chili done right Competition was fierce at the 10th annual West Shore Rotary chili cook off last Saturday, with 11 teams competing for the People’s Choice, Best Judged and Best Showmanship awards. Every team brought their own twist on the classic dish, drawing lines of chili enthusiasts sampling the ‘secret’ recipes. Molasses, chocolate, chipotle, Guinness and ten-hour braised chuck were just a few of the tricks that teams pulled out to give each chili a chance to win. The in-house smoked bacon and pepperoni that the butchers at Market on Millstream added to their pot won over the judges and netted them top prize in the Best Judged category, but even their rosemary-sage scones weren’t enough to catch up to Richmond Plumbing’s tasty chili, which took home first in the People’s Choice award. The Rugby Canada booth gave its all trying for the Best Showmanship award, taking advantage of the nearby tunes blasting from Tom Lee’s Music to stage their own impromptu dance party, but they couldn’t quite overtake the antics and chicken hats over at Nando’s Chicken, who took home first prize. The annual event fundraises for the many projects of West Shore Rotary, and the club was hoping to raise about $7,000 this year.

resident Riely Brosius overtook his closest rival, Adien Grecht, to secure first place in the race and the overall standings. His mother Tara Brosius said her 11-year-old son cycled a “crazy” race. “It was an intense race with (Riely) in second (place) coming into the final turn behind. He pushed him up in the last corner

and took first place across the line,” she said. “I was just overjoyed with excitement, it was such a good feeling that they did so well after working so hard to get to where they are. a.k.a. “Lazy Eye” The word “amblyopia” is Greek in origin and it quite literally means slow vision. The term “lazy eye” is often used to describe amblyopia to patients. If an eye is to become amblyopic, it will do so during the period of visual development between birth and about ten years of age. One eye is sending a weaker signal to the brain; therefore fewer connections will be made to the brain for that eye. This condition can occur if one is born with eyes significantly different prescriptions. Over time, the ability to use both eyes at once is diminished. The brain has many cells requiring input from both eyes. These cells, devoted to binocular vision and depth perception, are unable to develop if both eyes are not sending a strong signal, consequently the weaker eye wanders. Researchers disagree about the exact age up to which amblyopia can be successfully treated. They do agree however that the key to remediating amblyopia is early detection and treatment. Remember, the first eye examination should be at around the third birthday.

Classroom still best for brain Travis Paterson News staff

The old phrase, “use it or lose it,” still holds true, but it’s not quite that simple when it comes to brain activity. A locally run class is helping those who might have passed up challenging their brains to get it back together. New research is showing that, just as the body can always build muscle fibre (though at a slower rate later in life), it’s also possible to build new neural pathways much later in life than previously believed. In fact, it’s believed it’s never too late, though it’s all relative to the state of someone’s mental and physical health. The key is to challenge the mind on a consistent basis, which is the genesis of the Memory Plus classes run throughout Greater Victoria by Silver Threads, said program co-ordinator Lisa Coulson. “In our lifetime, the childhood class setting is often the healthiest time, when you’re being forced to use your mind,” Coulson said. “And that’s what Memory Plus is all about. We create a social group that performs games and activities which are all designed to challenge the brain, and it all relates back to memory. “The program is designed for people in the beginning stages of memory difficulties, so some participants are in early diagnosis dementia or

Alzheimer’s, and do well to retain their abilities,” Coulson added. “Others are just being proactive,” she said. “It’s for anyone at any age.” Class engagement creates a social atmosphere, which is an important part of the process, especially for those not well connected to their community. Coulson has had several participants tell her they look forward to the class all week. Theme-based curriculum, such as camping in the summer time, stokes forgotten memories and reinvigorates neural pathways, she said. “It ends up being a lot of fun, there is a lot of laughter, and I have to say, laughter is probably the most important ingredient to the class,” Coulson said. “There are a lot of prepared jokes, which leads to impromptu laughs throughout the day.” Memory Plus classes have run locally for seven years and the program is continuing to grow. Sessions run Tuesdays at St. George’s Anglican Church (3909 St. George’s Ln.) in Cadboro Bay; Mondays at the relocated Victoria Silver Threads building (2340 Richmond Rd.); Thursdays at St. Luke’s Church Hall (3821 Cedar Hill X Rd.) and on Friday’s at Saanich Silver Threads (286 Hampton Rd.). But don’t just rely on a once-a-week classroom setting, said Coulson, who promotes as much activity as possible for seniors. “Never slow down,” she said. “The best thing for the brain is to be a lifelong learner.” For more information or class times, call Saanich Silver Threads at 250-382-3151.

Living to give back Travis Paterson News staff

Patricia Whitely has made a life out of helping out. The Victoria resident continues to volunteer each month at Our Place and once a week at Mount St. Mary Hospital. Among other duties at Mount St. Mary, Whitely arranges for a local daycare to come and sing, connecting the age groups. “I think it’s important for the new generations to connect with the older generations as soon as possible,” she says. Whitely was born and raised in Vancouver where she spent time with Canadian Girls in Training organization, a place that shaped her life and beliefs. She went on to study education and earned her doctorate, specializing in early childhood education. It took her all over

the world, as she worked and volunteered in China, the Caribbean, Africa, Guatemela, Egypt and Cambodia. “I ended up in a lot of different situations, working for the Army, at one point, and for the Organization for Cooperation and Overseas Development, though that’s no longer around.” Whitely usually worked with schools to either develop or deliver English curriculum. In Egypt, she partnered with mennonites in 20 schools and created an English language phonics program. In addition to that, Whitely stepped forward to volunteer. In Egypt, it took her to a strange sounding, but very real adventure called Garbage City, a Christian group that collected garbage in Cairo and sorted out the recyclable materials. Co-housing a fresh concept for seniors Seniors co-housing … now this makes sense. I’m sure when any senior shuffles by a milestone – Year 70 in my case recently – there is a temptation to fall back on an ageless truism: “If I’d known I was going to live so long I would have ….” In my case, as with many of my veteran colleagues from the jourBrian nalism trenches, that sentence ends with … “joined my newspaper’s pension plan.” I didn’t. But, my partner and I got lucky. We own our modest retirement home outright and that makes the coming years less daunting. And, we have each other. Many are not so fortunate. For many fixed income seniors the implications of housing costs and other daily living expenses are scary. For some these financial challenges are exacerbated by the terrible loneliness that can accom-

pany the less-than-golden years. In Sooke, a beacon shines – a seniors’ cohousing project that addresses the dual threats of being able to stay in your own home and the isolation that can accompany old age. Sooke’s Margaret Critchlow says: “There is a lot of concern about the impact of the silver tsunami from Kieran those of us who are growing older.” Margaret is president of the Canadian Senior Cohousing Society and a founding director of Harbourside, a soon-to-be-constructed seniors’ cohousing complex on the waterfront in Sooke. Across North America, seniors in cohousing projects design and manage their own neighbourhoods. They create physical and social environments in which they flourish until the lights go out. Seniors own their homes the same way others own their condo units. The bonus is they share a large

Margaret loves the added benefits of this seniors living model. “Social isolation is more likely to kill you than smoking. Social connection is the key to flourishing in old age,” she says. The common house is in place and construction of 31 dwellings begins this September with occupancy scheduled for January 2016. There are consequences to all of life’s critical decisions and Margaret has zeroed in on one that makes cohousing a compelling option to explore. Senior cohousing allows people to stay eight to 10 years longer in their own homes than convention living arrangements.

Savannah Purdy tasted the sweetest of success with her goldmedal win at the national beach volleyball championships, alongside partner Hannah May, defeating a duo she lost to last year. Purdy, a Spencer Middle School student, finished second in her age group in Canada last year with longtime partner Charlie Holborn whose family moved right after nationals last summer. “Charlie has continued playing over there and done really well for herself,” said coach Mike Toakley. “Savannah had to look around for another partner. She didn’t have to look very far.” Hannah May was a member of the Victoria Volleyball Association Chargers team, but because the two attended different schools this year, they couldn’t partner up for the first indoor tournament of the year (that changes as Hannah and her sister Gracie move to Spencer next year). “Even back in September they agreed to partner up when June (and beach volleyball season) rolled around,” Toakley said. The pair trained and drilled and practiced to the point where earlier this month they finished second at provincials to earn a berth along with three other Langfordbased beach volleyball teams at nationals held in Parksville. “It was really fun, we went undefeated 9-0 all weekend and we beat the team we lost to in provincials … it was like revenge,” said May. “We beat them twice this weekend… so that felt good.” The undefeated three-day run against the elite beach teams of Western Canada ended with a win over Emma Gamache and Teagan

Everybody wants a purpose, and finding that fit is what drives Jeanine Reemst. At any given time, Reemst and a five-person staff manage about 80 clients with developmental disabilities through a four-stage process to permanent employment at the Garth Homer Society. “We have clients who can perform some areas of a job, and do those parts really well, but maybe not all the tasks of a regular job description,” says Reemst, employment services manager at the society. Reemst recently invited the community to visit the organization’s newly established space on the third floor of the Garth Homer building (813 Darwin Ave.) in Saanich. “The longterm plan is to educate employers about our opportunities,” she says. Job coaches work with clients who face barriers due to any one of a long list of developmental disabilities such as autism, Asperger syndrome, Down syndrome or fetal alcohol syndrome. Clients are assessed for their autonomy and other factors before coaches assist in job development. “We have to sleuth out how independent they are, find out what they like and why they like it, and then move ahead to find an employer willing to adjust a job description or expectations to find a fit,” Reemst says. One client, named December, has found her niche as a

Since May, the department has helped place 12 people in permanent jobs. Once a job is found, clients

begin working during the training and support stage, which can last from a couple of weeks to several months. The training goes beyond the client, as coaches often educate the employer and other employees about the work arrangement. Coaches visit the client as little as once a week during the maintenance stage and back off once the employee is thriving in their new role. While no one scored a lucky shot to win a 2014 Impreza from Saunders Subaru, the 2014 Iron 883 Harley Davidson motorcycle from Steve Drane or the $5,000 Investors Group hole-in-one prize, they went home happily full of chicken and ribs while winning other prizes at the inaugural Mighty 91 golf tournament at Olympic View Golf Course on Aug. 16. “Everybody got prizes and they were all worth at least $25, mostly more,” said Brian Shackleton, second vice-president at the Royal Canadian Legion Prince Edward Branch No. 9 “They all seemed to have fun and the meal was good.” Side events including swing analysis, putting contest and a break the glass competition just added to the interest. The Langford branch is home to more than 1,400 members and houses the Goldstream Food Bank Society, Christmas Food Hamper Society, Emergency Social Services, Metchosin & South Vancouver Island Lions Clubs, Boy Scouts, Girl Guides and the Westshore Rebels Junior football team. “We do work with most of the local schools offering bursaries and scholarships. We do our Nov. 11 campaign of course with prizes for best poems and drawings. One of the biggest things we do is support our vets.” The branch and the Westshore poppy fund have donated about $500,000 into community coffers over the past five years. The Capital Region is facing an invasion. Knotweed, a bamboo-like plant described by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as “one of the world’s worst invasive species,” has made its way across Vancouver Island. “Knotweed is like no other plant, not everything green is created equal,” said Coastal Invasive Species Committee executive director Rachelle McElroy. “If you leave one fingernail of the plant behind it will grow into a whole new plant.” The CISC has been working with local municipalities in an attempt to prevent further infestation, treating 120 sites of infestation in 2013, and 67 in 2012, but McElroy said while increased awareness has lead to increased treatment, vigilance is still key. Knotweed is capable of growing four centimetres a day, though she referred to the portion of the plant above surface as “the tip of the iceberg.” Knotweed spreads by the roots, and if left untreated, can spread 20 metres wide and three metres deep underground. “Knotweed is quite widespread in the region, but not to the point where we can’t get ahead of it,” McElroy said. “More people are reporting it as they become

more aware of what it looks like and the kind of damage it can do, and more people are learning that we offer free treatment.” Knotweed has infiltrated both public and private property across the West Shore and been known to grow through concrete and home foundations. In the U.K., the plant has become a huge issue for property owners, even disqualifying

some from taking out mortgages. Also known as elephant ear or false bamboo, the invasive plant originated in Eastern Asia and can be identified by hollow, bamboo-like stems, large green leaves, small white flowers and red colouring along the stems. Residents are asked not to cut, mow or compost knotweed, as this can lead to further spreading. Colwood Parks foreman Gord Beauvillier said the invasive plant also spreads because it is sometimes gifted among households. “There could be other undetected sites out there (because) people give it to each other. It is not an ugly plant some think it has an aesthetic value,” Beauvillier said. “So it is out there and it is so viable and so vigorous, so it can be easily spread. As soon as it is detected it should be reported.” CISC treats knotweed by injecting a herbicide directly into the roots, effectively halting growth. McElroy noted the lack of a registered aquatic herbicide in Canada as an obstacle for prevention. This has lead to a higher rate of growth along streams, where knotweed competes with other plants, resulting in soil erosion and lower oxygen levels and harming salmon populations. Independent engineering inspections have been ordered for Mount Polley mine near Williams Lake and nearly 100 other mine tailings ponds with permits across the province, with reports to be complete by the end of January. Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett announced the dual reviews Monday. The Mount Polley investigation is to be complete by Jan. 31 and will be done concurrently with the B.C. government’s legally required probes by B.C.’s chief inspector of mines and the environment ministry, which looks at the longer-term effects of the Aug. 4 tailings spill. Bennett said costs will be covered by Imperial Metals for Mount Polley and by all operators of mines with permits to operate nearly 100 tailings facilities in B.C. “Certainly in the last 40 years there’s no evidence of a tailings dam breach in British Columbia, but rare or not, it happened,

and so the public’s confidence I think is shaken” Bennett said at a news conference in Vancouver. “That’s why we need to get these three experts involved as quickly as we’re getting them involved.” The Mount Polley panel includes UBC mine engineering professor Dirk Van Zyl, U.S. consulting engineer Steven Vick, whose earlier investigations included the 2005 New Orleans levee breach that followed Hur-

ricane Katrina, and Norbert Morgenstern, an Alberta civil engineering professor who has worked on 140 mine projects. Bennett said the panel was chosen with approval of the Williams Lake and Soda Creek Indian Bands, and their report will be made available to the band councils at the same time as government. Independent inspections of other mine tailings ponds must be completed Dec. 1, a change from the March 31 deadline for inspections that are required annually. Sharks would bankrupt a sea-going tooth fairy

In light of Discovery Channel’s annual Shark Week, it felt timely to discuss the prehistoric cartilaginous creatures. Since the feature film Jaws was released, sharks have been stereotyped by media as man-eating killers and have intrinsically been feared. While Shark Week 2014 was full of exaggerated images of Megalodon and far-fetched thrillers like Sharkageddon; sharks are remarkable and their true beauty is known to few. Sharks are part of the class chondrichthyes, meaning their skeleton is made of cartilage, rather than bone. There are hundreds of species of sharks that range in size from only 17 centimeters to 12 metres in length. Sharks are found in every ocean region around the world, including off the coast of British Columbia, and are known to exist to depths of 2,000 metres. I distinctly remember loosing my first tooth – and boy was I excited when the tooth fairy left a shiny dollar under my pillow. If ocean tooth fairies existed, they would have a full time job with sharks, which have up to 30,000 teeth over their lifetime. Sharks have rows of teeth, which lay in a groove on the inside of their jaw. When a tooth (or teeth) is lost, another tooth from the row below simply pops up, almost like a conveyor belt.

Depending on the species, sharks can loose teeth anywhere from every eight days to every couple of months. Just like other animals, the shape of the shark’s teeth reflect their food choices; for example, sharks with flatter teeth use them for crushing shelled animals, whereas sharks with sharp-serrated teeth use theirs to tear through the tough skin of larger fish and mammals. When sharks are filmed in the wild they are almost always moving. In fact, most sharks move at approximately eight km/h, but can increase their speed upwards of 19 km/h when hunting. If sharks don’t constantly move they can sink. Most fish in the ocean have something called a swimbladder, which is a gas-filled organ that allows fish to change their buoyancy and remain at a specific depth without swimming. Sharks do not have swim-bladders and instead they have a very large liver filled with a special oil called squalene. However, the liver is still often too heavy and thus most sharks must continually swim to stay buoyant. Senses are an important part of survival and sharks are no exception. Like many other ocean animals, sharks have a keen sense of smell, sight and sound. Sharks have such a keen sense of smell that they can even determine the direction from which it came. A shark’s sense of sight is often debated. While sharks have relatively good eyesight and some unique adaptations, it is unconfirmed how much they actually use their eyesight in hunting compared to their other senses. While testing a shark’s sense of hearing is difficult, it is thought they can hear prey from miles away. Furthermore, like many other fish, sharks can detect vibrations in the water.

Sharks however, have a “sixth sense” that is, sharks can detect electromagnetic fields that are produced by living creatures, using specialized electroreceptor organs called, ampullae of Lorenzini. Sharks have the greatest electrical sensitivity of any animal and use this special sense to find prey, orient themselves and possibly even navigate throughout the ocean based on the Earth’s magnetic field. Sharks brood their young in three different ways. Some species bare live young, others nourish the embryo internally, while other species lay eggs. “Egg laying” sharks (and skates) produce a special pouch, called a Mermaid’s Purse that protects the eggs until they hatch. Mermaid’s purses have a leathery texture and resemble dried up seaweed; they can be found washed up on the beach, so keep an eye out for them. Although sharks often don’t get a lot of empathy, they are remarkable animals and have outlived many species over the last 400 million years. As scientists continue to study and understand these creatures, I hope the public’s perception of them will continue to change for the positive – from feared to loved. There is still much to learn about sharks and protecting the remaining populations is crucial for their survival. It’s the second setback the province has handed to Pacific Booker, which won a court decision last December after its permit was refused by the B.C. government. Bennett said the Morrison tailings pond was one of the issues in the court case, and he and Polak decided it was in the best interests of the public and the mine proponent to wait. The Lake Babine First Nation intervened in the case, and its land claim as well as concerns about long-term effects on water quality in Morrison Lake were cited in the decision to withhold the mine permit. Three mine engineering experts have been given until Jan. 31 to report their findings on the cause of the Aug. 4 tailings dam breach at Mount Polley, a similar openpit mine near Williams Lake.

Mount Polley owner Imperial Metals is nearing completion of its Red Chris project near Iskut in northwest B.C. It has all provincial permits except for its tailings pond and the company has agreed to an independent review of its design and construction before putting it into service. A group of Tahltan Nation elders blocked a road to the Red Chris project after the Mount Polley incident. “Red Chris should not be held up,” Bennett said. “There is a roadblock there now and the company is currently working around it, and also having I think some pretty fruitful discussions with the Tahltan Central Council. “But they’re proceeding. Their mine is almost built, and they are hopeful that they will be able to provide the independent information or verification that the tailings dam at Red Chris is designed and built properly, such that the Tahltan Central Council will be satisfied they have the insurance and the mine will be able to proceed.” editor@goldstreamgazette.com
