Steep hills and long distances no longer have to be an issue for cyclists, now that Pedego Electric Bicycles has ridden into town. After partnering with West 49 founder Sam Baio, Charles Turner opened Pedego Bikes on Oak Bay Avenue just over six weeks ago. “The community’s been awesome so far,” said Turner, owner of the shop. “It’s hard when you’re coming in halfway through the season, but we’re happy to be here.” Prior to opening the store in Oak Bay, Turner owned an electric bike shop in Courtenay. He closed it down after five years to move back to Victoria, where he spent most of his life. Oak Bay Police Chief Const. Andy Brinton is back behind his desk after being sidelined by an injury in May, just after he took the position. The new chief was mountain biking at Hartland when he flipped over the handle bar of his bike. “I was on the job about a month. It usually takes a while to get into the swing of things – which were just starting to gel – then suddenly I’m on the sidelines,” said Brinton. “I’ve been back in the saddle for a while now and it’s going well.” The crash broke the head of his femur bone. “They put some screws in to hold it together as it heals,” he said. “Last week an x-ray showed it’s looking pretty good.” He’s working on getting a full range of motion back in the injured leg and is looking forward to getting back on his bike. “I’ve been mountain biking for 14, 15 years, trail riding, stuff like that. I’ve been doing a lot of road riding since coming down here,” Brinton said. Bipolar youth sought for research Drew McLachlan News staff

The Bipolar Disorder Society of BC is looking for six local residents diagnosed with bipolar disorder, aged 19 to 25, to help fill what founder Andrea Paquette calls a “gap in youth research.” Having recently received a $159,000 research grant from the Vancouver Foundation, the society, along with the University of B.C.-based Collaborative Research Team to Study Bipolar Disorder (CREST.BD), are forming two youth action groups in Victoria and the Comox Valley. Each group will research ways in which youth can stay well while living with bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is characterized by periods of mania, in which the individual feels overwhelmingly happy and energetic, which can result in irresponsible choice. These periods of mania transition into bouts of depression, in which the individual often feels unmotivated, anxious, hopeless or isolated. Statistically, those diagnosed with bipolar disorder face a much higher risk of self-harm or suicide than the general population. “Its a challenge everyday,” Paquette said. “It’s more than having good and bad days. One

Training will be provided by a Torontobased group, with research methods being decided afterwards. Positions are paid. The society will also be hosting two research forums, open to all youth aged 16 to 25 suffering from bipolar disorder, the

first of which will take place January in Victoria. The society runs several youth mental health support groups in Greater Victoria, which Paquette said she formed after seeing a lack of groups focussed solely on youth. “Its amazing to see how the groups have grown, you’ll get people who haven’t gotten out of the house for six months come down and make friends,” Paquette said. “Every day (living with bipolar disorder) is a challenge, but with therapy, medication, nutrition and support, you can still live a full life.” reporter@vicnews.com

District wise to come up with Plan B With the region’s $788-million secondary sewage treatment project on the Capital Regional District’s back burner, Oak Bay council is wise to begin planning an alternative to the controversial plan. Staff from West Shore communities, Esquimalt Local sewage and the City of Victoria treatment a better are currently option for residents working on terms of reference to move ahead on a distributed model study under the umbrella of the CRD. The staff of those districts feel they may be able to provide sewage treatment that not only meets regulatory standards and guidelines, but beats them by standard and cost, according to Esquimalt mayor Barb Desjardins. The CRD is required by federal legislation to treat its sewage to a secondary or greater level by 2020, and the province has set a wastewater treatment deadline of 2018. An extension to that provincial deadline will likely be necessary if the CRD can come up with a viable alternative to the current plan. In the meantime though, Oak Bay will hopefully join Victoria and Saanich in a bid to come up with a plan that will pass CRD standards and be able to go it alone, leaving the West Shore communities to do the same. While Oak Bay mayor Nils Jensen says he is not happy to split with the CRD, the move is a necessary one in order for the district to keep tax and utility costs to residents in line. As a CRD directors Jensen is likely also spurred on by the threat of personal liability for failure to comply with the regulations. Whatever the reasoning behind the move, a made near, if not in, Oak Bay decision will serve residents better and hopefully be more cost effective.

Fletcher confused about consultation Re: Farm changes a leap forward (B.C. Views, Aug. 13) Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick happens to be reducing the harm from Bill 24 with his consultation about the ALR regulation. However, columnist Tom Fletcher seems confused about its main purpose. The consultation paper begins with: “The purpose of this consultation is to invite your input on some proposed additional activities …” That contrasts with the Bill 24 experience, where thousands of citizens of all stripes requested consultation and were spurned. It remains obvious that the bill reduced the protection of farmland in the nine-tenths of the ALR in the new second tier. It is not obvious why Fletcher thinks that fact or a distillery on MLA Lana Popham’s farm is relevant to the current consultation. In many ways, Letnick’s collegial process is exemplary. One gets the sense of a group of people with down-to-earth knowledge working toward careful updates to the ALR Regulation. To take part, Google: July 2014 Land Commission consultation. Invermere has just had to raise their budget to $1,000 per deer. I don’t know if circumstances are different there than Oak Bay but I would not be surprised if Oak Bay would have to do the same. Some people just don’t get it On Monday, I was driving downtown and was stopped at a red light at Tillicum Road and the Trans-Canada Highway. In front of me was a small Toyota, and I saw the driver flick a lit cigarette out the window. After I realized what I had witnessed, and I laid on the horn, he looked at me in the rearview mirror and shrugged. (After all, it was clear I was the nut!) We have paid huge dollars for fire fighting including bringing firefighters from Australia. Areas of Vancouver Island are tinder dry and we haven’t had much appreciable rain since June. hy is heart attack the number one killer in this country? Ninety-nine percent of doctors say it’s due to atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries) and that cholesterol lowering drugs are the primary way to treat it. But I suggest cardiologists have closed minds and are ignoring facts that could save thousands of North Americans from coronary attack. Vitamin C is required to manufacture healthy collagen, the glue that holds coronary cells together, just like mortar is needed for bricks. Lysine, like steel rods in cement, makes collagen stronger. Two-time Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Linus Pauling reported twenty-five years ago it takes a mere 10 milligrams to prevent scurvy, but several thousand to prevent heart attack.

But to take large doses of vitamin C and lysine requires swallowing many pills daily. It’s a tall order for those who dislike swallowing one pill. So for several years I’ve been trying to find a company that would manufacture a combination of vitamin C and lysine powder. I was also aware that patients have died from CLDs. Others have developed kidney, liver and muscle complications. I also believed the research of Pauling and Stehbens irrefutable. Now, the work of Dr. Bush has convinced me my decision was prudent.

The Land Rover LR4 was not what I was expecting, instead it was a pleasant surprised. Looks: I’m used to seeing bulky and cumbersome old Land Rovers on the back roads, spinning out rocks while attempting a hill climb and shaking the occupants to bits! Fast forward to today’s version of the Land Rover and you will find an outstanding front end that is easily recognized with the signature grille and projector style headlights. Also feature are those trend setting side vents on the front fenders, much copied in the aftermarket. And the large rear glass panels that extend up into the roof line make the overall appearance very clean looking and unique. Optional 20 inch rims are worth the upcharge. In the cab: My first impression after climbing into the cab was one of disbelief. I did not expect that level of comfort. The sight lines are amazing and the blind spot was almost non-existent. The rear seats had plenty of room for adults and the cargo area was adequate. The heated leather wrapped steering wheel featured all the controls one needed to operate the equipment without distraction. The front and rear seats are heated. Power tilt/slide front sunroof and two sections of glass covering the

7 roof area over the 2nd and third row seats allow plenty of natural light in. Safety: There are six airbags, including side curtain, side thorax and front passenger with occupant detection system, four-channel all terrain ABS, electronic brake assist and an electronic parking brake. Bryan Hourt, Acura’s assistant large project leader of vehicle performance, tells of his upbringing on a ranch in northwest Nebraska, he talks about horse power. He explains that when you connect with the animal, getting on with life’s daily tasks is much easier. If you’re out of sync with your horse, you work twice as hard since you have to think for both yourself and it. In one situation, you enjoy yourself and get more done. The other is exhausting. If you’re in a car that you don’t connect with, everyday routine can be more arduous than it has to be. Its quirks rub you the wrong way. But, if you love your car and know exactly what it’s going to

do in any given situation life on the road is so much better. Enter the 2015 Acura TLX that blends horsepower, with grace and poise. When I slipped inside the cabin of the new TLX, pushed the start button, selected the “D” button and drove off, confidence was apparent from the start. It’s a vehicle designed with performance in mind from the ground up. Its chassis features a newly designed four-wheel independent suspension system to help you enjoy country roads or urban life. It’s tame at slower speeds – and very good table manners – but has the ability to take on higher speed challenges without breaking a sweat. I might have taken a corner or two relatively swiftly, but the steering feel, and its ability to maintain composure in

a turn was impressive. Each model comes with Acura’s Integrated Dynamics System that allows drivers to customize their driving experience through four selectable modes. Depending on the setting, Acura says, “IDS will adjust power-steering effort, throttle response, transmission shift logic, HVAC system operation, and the control logic for either the P-AWS or SH-AWD systems. The new Sport+ mode unlocks the full performance potential of the TLX with the most aggressive settings.” Whether you want that extra bit of gusto, or you are driving around town, the TLX has a mode for you. Three TLX models will be offered. The first comes with a 2.4-litre, i-VTEC inline-4 engine with an eight-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (8DCT) with torque

converter, and Precision All-Wheel Steer (P-AWS). It has an output of 206 horsepower and 182 lb-ft of torque. Then there’s a trim with a 3.5-litre, i-VTEC V6 engine with a nine-speed automatic transmission and P-AWS. That produces 290 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque, and gets 10 more hp and 13 more lb-ft of torque versus the 2014 TL 3.5-litre engine. Lastly, there’s the TLX SH-AWD with next-generation Super-Handling AllWheel Drive, available only with the 3.5-litre, 290 horsepower V6 and ninespeed automatic. Eventually, both the TSX and TL will be succeeded by the TLX. It makes sense. Dimensionally, the TLX will be positioned between the ILX entry-luxury sedan and the RLX flagship Acura sedan.

There’s room for five, 405L of cargo room around back and places to store personal items. Sure there are sportier offerings in the segment. The new Mercedes-Benz C-Class is one of them. So is the Audi A4. But what works for the TLX is its understated elegance. It’s pleasant to drive, and with a centre stack stripped of unnecessary buttons making it more user friendly. I’d describe my experience in both the 4 and 6 cylinder TLXs to be pleasant. Not the bad pleasant, the kind of adjective you use to describe a mother in-law or awkward coworker. Escaping city heat for the cool of the back country Bob McHugh

On a muggy, scorching hot summer’s day, what better vehicle than the aptly named Highlander for a high-altitude scenic drive to find some cool, crisp mountain air and sink a foot in a glacier. All-new for 2014, Highlander Hybrid is the fuel-efficient and eco-friendlier version of what Toyota describes as its mid-sized SUV, but it sure looks and feels bigger than most in this class, plus it can seat up to seven (or eight). Wider and longer than last year, this Highlander is also lower and, more importantly from a driving perspective, it has a lower centre of gravity. There was a time when Highlander looked like an SUV, with an angular two-box design. Its styling lines have softened with successive redesigns and now if you put Highlander beside its Camry-based wagon sibling, the Venza, you need a second look to tell them apart. Not sure if that’s a good thing, but I do like its more car-like driving dynamics. Not far south of the Canadian border, Mount Baker is a glacier-covered mountain that rises 3,286 m (10,781 ft) above sea level, which is over 900 m (3,000 ft) higher than Whistler, the best-known mountain in B.C. Mount Baker is also regarded as the second most active volcano in the Cascade Mountain Range, after Mount St. Helens, but there’s been nary a puff since 1880.The Mount Baker Highway (Hwy. 542) starts in Bellingham (exit #255 off the I-5), winds east through a number of small communities and offers some interesting side tours along the way, before it climbs steeply and ends at Artist Point (1,567 m / 5,140 ft.). This large parking lot, which is about 10 km beyond the ski area, is closed during the winter months and has spectacular panoramic views, plus a selection of great hiking trails. The highway crosses the Nooksack River at Nugent’s Corner and tracks east, alongside the north fork of the river, through old growth areas in the Mount Baker Snoqualmie National Forest. Allow about 1.5 hours of leisurely drive time in each direction. You’ll also need a ($5) day pass to park, which you get from automated dispensers at the Glacier Public Service Center or at Heather Meadows

near the skiing area. The Hybrid Synergy Drive system in Highlander uses a 3.5L Atkinson Cycle V6 gas engine, a high torque electric motor-generator and powerful traction battery. It boasts 10 additional horsepower (280 net horsepower) over the gas-only model, yet uses almost 30 per cent less fuel. Although Toyota has done an admirable job of masking it, Highlander Hybrid is a weighty (2,200 kg) vehicle, and has the usual characteristics of a heavy vehicle. It’s more than fine in a straight line and while handling is laudably predictable, it didn’t seem to like being tossed around on the twisty sections of the highway. Then again, that’s the norm in this class of vehicle. Side trips: Mount Baker Vineyards and Winery has a tasting room, offers tours, has a picnic area and is open Thursday through Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. It’s about 3 km east of the Nugent’s Corner roundabout, where you can also spot the historic Bethany Church (built in 1907) landmark. Nooksack Falls is just a short (and groomed) gravel road off the highway about 11 km east of Glacier, which is the last community along the highway. You do have to scramble over some (slippery when wet) rocks to get to a good (and safe) fenced viewing area. The water takes a spectacular 30 m plunge, so a close-up view is definitely worth the extra effort. Interesting Eating Places: Anthony’s

is an excellent choice for lunch or dinner in Bellingham. Situated in the harbour area it overlooks the marina and has views of the San Juan Islands. Great service, great fare (especially the seafood), all tables come with a view and the prices are very reasonable, compared to Vancouver. An after-meal stroll around the picturesque marina walkway also allows you to ogle hundreds of boats and yachts up close. She is currently in her third year at UVic, where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Education with a major in physical education and a minor in geography and special education. “I am now healthy and looking forward to a future in the education world,” she said. Most cyclists partaking in Ryder Hesjedal’s Tour de Victoria on Sunday are completely okay with Hesjedal’s absence. The pro cyclist is in Spain for the three-week Vuelta a Espana, or Tour of Spain, which runs Aug. 23 to Sept. 14. It’s a little ironic, though, because this year’s Tour de Victoria, a mass participation ride, was previously scheduled so Hesjedal could participate. “People understand Ryder is going to compete in the Vuelta,” said Tour de Victoria director Seamus McGrath, a former pro mountain biker and Olympian. “This might be a better way to give Ryder a chance to win (than in the Tour de France).” Hesjedal finished an impressive ninth overall at the Giro d’Italia in May, having won that event in 2012. He then skipped the 2014 Tour de France in July to focus on this weekend’s Vuelta start. For the region’s Grand Tour fans, having Ryder starting in the Vuelta the day before the Tour de Victoria is almost more exciting.

“With pro cycling, it’s hard to see seven to nine months into the future,” McGrath said. “Hesjedal had such a great ride at the Giro, (Garmin-Sharp) decided to give him a chance to go for it at the Tour de Spain.” This year’s Tour de Victoria is split into three distance groups. The big ride is 145 kilometres. It starts in front of the B.C. legislature and goes east to Metchosin before looping back through Highlands. It then crosses over to Cordova Bay and follows the water south through Oak Bay, back to the legislature. A 100 km route starts in Langford and follows much of the last 100 km of the big route, while an easier 45 km starts at the Camosun College Interurban campus, heads north around Elk Lake and also crosses over to Cordova Bay where it connects with the other routes and finishes on Belleville Street. The Tour de Victoria grew from 1,350 participants in its first year in 2011 to 1,800 cyclists last year. McGrath said he anticipates another 1,800 this year but won’t know the numbers until Sunday of as the final count grows in the waning days before the event.

Blue Dot Tour: It’s about all of us David Suzuki’s last national tour stops at university David Suzuki Guest opinion

A now-famous 1972 photo of Earth taken by Apollo 17 astronauts from 45,000 kilometres away became known as “the blue marble.” The late scientist Carl Sagan described a 1990 picture taken from six billion kilometres away by the unmanned Voyager 1 as a “pale blue dot.” The vision of Earth from a distance has profoundly moved pretty much anyone who has ever seen it. “When we look down at the earth from space, we see this amazing, indescribably beautiful planet,” International Space Station astronaut Ron Garan said. “It looks like a living, breathing organism. But it also, at the same time, looks extremely fragile.” Referring to the atmosphere, Garan added “it’s really sobering … to realize that that little paperthin layer is all that protects every living thing on Earth.” Many astronauts report a deep feeling of connection that transcends borders and worldly conflict —referred to by some as

the “overview effect.” Apollo 14’s Edgar Mitchell said: “You develop an instant global consciousness, a people orientation, an intense dissatisfaction with the state of the world, and a compulsion to do something about it. From out there on the moon, international politics look so petty.” How can anyone who has even seen a photo of the Earth treat our small blue home with disdain and carelessness? How can anyone fail to recognize how precious and finite the resources, especially water, are – and that we must share and care for what we have? The “blue marble” photo from Apollo 17, the last manned lunar mission, catalyzed the global environmental movement. Now, as people around the world compete for air, water and land – not just with each other, but with corporations bent on profit at any cost – we need a resurgence in action to care for our small blue planet. That’s why I’m about to embark on what will likely be my last national tour. From Sept. 24 to Nov. 9, I’m crossing

the country, from St. John’s, Newfoundland, to Victoria, B.C., with 20 stops along the way. The plan is to work with Canadians from all walks of life to protect the people and places we love. It’s the most important thing I’ve ever done. And it’s going to be fun. Because they care deeply about our country and the planet, many friends are joining me along the way, including Feist, Neil Young, the Barenaked Ladies, Margaret Atwood, Kinnie Starr, Raine Maida, Grimes, Danny Michel, Stephen Lewis, Bruce Cockburn, Robert Bateman, Shane Koyczan and many more. The goal of the Blue Dot Tour is to work with community leaders and groups, local governments, First Nations, musicians, writers, legal experts and – we hope – you on local, regional and national initiatives to ensure all Canadians have access to clean water, fresh air and healthy food. Ultimately, we’d like to see the right to a healthy environment enshrined in the Canadian

Constitution’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms. That may seem like a challenge, but it’s not unusual. More than half the world’s nations – at least 110 – have environmental rights in their constitutions. Not having them is a strange oversight in a country like Canada, where our clean air and water, spectacular nature and abundant wildlife and resources instill a sense of pride and make us the envy of people around the world. Maybe we take our good fortune for granted. But we shouldn’t. Already, environmental hazards contribute to about 36,000 premature deaths in Canada a year, and half of us live in areas where we’re exposed to unsafe air pollution levels. As the rush to extract, transport and sell fossil fuels while there’s still a market heats up, it will only get worse — unless we all pitch in. It’s not about getting in the way of industry or progress; it’s about building a conversation about the kind of country we want. And it’s about ensuring that our economic activity creates more benefits than harm to people and the natural systems that keep us healthy and alive. Kids prepare to play the strike away Programs offered by Oak Bay Rec during the teachers’ strike include skidaddle, a multiactivity program including swimming, crafts and outdoor games; soccertron co-ed full day and half day camps, which help kids improve their soccer skills; grand slam golf and tennis, where each day is split up between tennis and golf; fun unlimited, which, like skidaddle, involves various activities such as swimming and games; junior lifeguard camp, which teaches kids who have passed swim kids level four about lifesaving and lifeguarding; sportball multisport camp, which includes crafts, music and games. Skidaddle, soccertron and fun unlimited are flexible camps in that parents can register their children for one day at a time if they do not want to commit to a full week. If the strike does continue, Oak Bay Rec will also be adding public skates on Fridays from 1:30 to 3 p.m. and public swims during the day of the first week of September only. These are scheduled for Sept. 2, 3 and 4 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. and Sept 5 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. For the duration of the strike, there will be a public swim every Friday from 1:30 to 3 p.m. editor@oakbaynews.com

Peter and Anne Hopkinson moved to Oak Bay in mid-May after living in Burnaby for more than 35 years. The couple have also lived overseas, including a stint in Algiers. The decision to move to Oak Bay was an easy one says Anne. “We had been here several times and knew how lovely it is. Then our daughter Jean and her family moved from Ontario to here and – here we are.” The couple is enjoying the area, but are still on the hunt for the perfect Oak Bay home. When Anne saw our HomeFinder section asking readers to share their house hunting story, this is what she had to say: “Damn and blast, we missed the house we should have bought! The beautiful home on St. David Street sold on the day of its open house – but not to us, to some other luckier and quicker buyer. You cannot dawdle in the Oak Bay housing market. The good ones go faster than you can make a full price offer. We were in the final countdown of a trip to Sicily

Then I saw the listing on St. David Street. Perfect. We phoned Eamon Coll, our real estate agent, who told us there was already an offer. Damn and blast. Bad timing. I’m ashamed to say I prayed for

the offer to fall through, but it didn’t. On the flight above the North Pole platitudes began to ease the sting, and I accepted that there really would be another house, maybe even a better one, and we would have time to search while we rented in the neighbourhood.

Any lingering regrets soon evaporated in the Sicilian sunshine. So here we are now, renting on St. Patrick Street, scanning the neighbourhood for signs, emailing Eamon for viewings, and not thinking about “the house that got away.” Hope the

Royal BC Museum new venue for Chalk Art Festival Funding shortfall keeps festival to central locale Chalk artists from across North America and the region will soon be descending on downtown Victoria for the third annual Victoria International Chalk Art Festival. The festival presents a number of changes this year including a new host venue for a giant 3D chalk art painting along with the relocation of the festival’s Kid’s Chalk Zone and Performance Stage. The Royal B.C. Museum will play host to Los Angeles-based 3D chalk artist Tracy Lee Stum who, along with local First Nation’s artist Jamin Zuroski, will paint a six-by-six-metre 3D masterpiece honouring First Nations in Clifford Carl Hall. Meanwhile the festival has discontinued operations in Centennial Square and has centralized the balance of activities to Government Street and Bastion Square. “The feedback we received last year is most preferred to have the Kids’
