Surrey and White Rock RCMP issued a joint warning Tuesday following a pair of sex assaults in the last 11 days. On Monday night at approximately 9:40 p.m., a 38-year-old South Surrey woman was sexually assaulted while walking on a trail near tennis courts in Alderwood Park (located at 1760 Lilac Dr.). According to police, the woman was approached from behind by a man, who uttered threats and then threw the victim to the ground and attempted to remove her clothes. The woman managed to ward off her attacker – at one point headbutting the suspect in the nose – and was eventually able to run to safety and call police. The suspect fled the scene. He is described as a six-foot-tall, dark-haired white man, between 35 and 42 years old. He was wearing dark, baggy pants with a large square belt buckle, a dark hoodie with a string and a dark ball cap. “The male may have sustained an injury during the attack, which may include a black eye(s), a brocontinued on page 6

Between 1995 and 2009, school children in Vancouver, Delta and Surrey were being followed on their way home and sexually assaulted. The attacker was becoming increasingly dangerous, and police feared fatalities were sure to follow. The three municipalities created a joint operation called Project Scourge which determined it was a single attacker. During the investigation, the team identified 561 potential suspects, but DNA analysis ruled out all of them. Two crime analysts, Special Const. Ryan Prox and
Sgt. Milena Bruns, began working on the file. They collected vast amounts of pertinent data – including geographic patterns, cell phone pings from area towers, offenders’ methods and paradigms – and fed them into a geographic program with the Vancouver Police Department (VPD). That was cross referenced with a provincial data gathering system. In eight weeks, the analysts came up with the name of a man who matched 98 per cent of the necessary criteria. The role of analysts were still new to policing, but continued on page 7

Finding love on two charitable wheels ▼ INSPIRED BY HER SISTER’S BATTLE WITH CANCER, SIOBHAN COATES FOUND NOT ONLY HOPE, BUT A LIFELONG COMPANION BOAZ JOSEPH
On this particular day in June 2012, breakfast had taken place hours earlier, shortly after 3:30 a.m., in a church in Kelowna. By mid-day, amid seemingly interminable uphill stretches on the highway, with massive leg pain and mind-numbing fatigue having set in, an occasional glance downward kept Siobhan Coates going – for what would total 17 hours of pedalling, covering 400 kilometres from Kelowna to North Delta. Having trained the previous year (2011) as a support crew member, this was her first Ride2Survive event as a full rider, and it wasn’t easy. But she had taped to her bike a photo of her sister and nephew. Her sister, she remembered, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011, just one week before the first Ride2Survive event Coates was involved with. “I had no idea when I joined the group.” So, on this day in 2012, she pushed on, keeping in sync with the other riders. “I was very headstrong,” the Surrey woman says. “I would not listen to my legs.” Her sister had already had her surgery, a double mastectomy with reconstruction, but it wasn’t yet clear if she was out of the woods. “I had a lot of anger as well. So any time in the ride of 2012, whenever I would get tired or think I couldn’t do it, I would just look down at the picture of my sister and think, well, my sister had no choice, so I’m gonna just focus on the fact that she powered through. “And I never wanted my nephew to not have his mother.” The picture on the bike was only replaced in 2014, as the original was worn out. While Ride2Survive offered hope as cancer threatened her sister, there were also other positive distractions to come from being involved in the event every year since. Initially, she was Ride2Survive support crew member – the connection was made by local spin instructor and ride founder Vicki Kunzli. “I didn’t have a road bike at this point,” she says. “I had a $200 Canadian Tire bike. I didn’t have the clip-on shoes or anything fancy.” At the time, she didn’t aspire to more than just supporting the group – 400 kilometres in one day seemed impossible. She went on a few training rides with the group, and
Siobhan Coates and Graham Street met three years ago while training for the Ride2Survive cycling fundraiser. The two were married a week after this year’s ride. He was a ride captain and well known within the group.” The following year, spending more time alongside others in training and on the ride day, she got to know the riders better, including Street. “A few of the riders were like, ‘Ooh, yeah, Graham’s great, and you guys should look at maybe dating,’ and I was like, ‘Oh no, we’re just friends,’ that kind of thing.” It wasn’t until after the 2012 ride that the friendship flourished – their first date was two weeks later. Two full years later, and just one week after the Ride2Survive, the couple got married on June 28, 2014. “The ceremony was at the Columbia Theatre in New West, and the reception was on the Fraser River Paddleboat,” Coats recalls. “My sister Patsy gave me away as my dad was too old to make the trip from Nova Scotia.” Half of the 60 wedding guests were Ride2Survive members. Coates is planning to re-join Ride2Survive in 2015. “It’s my friends, it’s my husband, it’s my life.”

one of them was able to convince senior cops to commit resources to the possible lead. Surveillance began, and shortly after, police picked up a cup discarded by the suspect. DNA on the cup was a perfect match to those collected from the crime scenes, and Ibata Hexamer (who eventually pleaded guilty) was arrested. “Had we not been called in and applied our approach to it, and they stayed with traditional policing investigative techniques on this file, we might not have caught him on the second hit, or the next, or the next,” VPD Special Const. Ryan Prox said in the book. “And he was escalating, he was probably going to kill next…” The case-in-point for the role of crime analysts is part of a book released this week called Eliminating Crime: The Seven Essential Principals of Police-based Crime Reduction outlines the fundamentals of policing required for our time. The book is written by criminologists Dr. Irwin Cohen, Dr. Darryl Plecas, Amanda McCormick and Adrienne Peters. (Cohen is currently reviewing Surrey RCMP’s detachment operations). It was published by Surrey Fire Chief Len Garis. The book echoes what SFU criminologist Rob Gordon told The Leader last week: that more police is not necessarily the answer to crime reduction. Better and more intelligent policing is. The book recommends police use seven approaches, including being information-led, intelligence-led, focusing on offenders and problems, developing
meaningful partnerships, being preemptive and being performance based. Information-led policing involves hitting prolific offenders hard where they do business. It’s the way Kamloops lowered it’s national crime ranking between 2009 and 2013. Prolific offenders were tracked down and given three choices: clean up their act, get out of town or go to jail. The approach involves knowing the offenders and the communities where they do their crimes. “When police are out of touch with or unaware of community concerns, it can result in a lack of support for and confidence in police,” the book states. Prolific offenders can account for 50 to 75 per cent of crime in a community. So the book recommends focusing on those to most effectively reduce crime. Instead of waiting for them to commit a crime, pounce on them as soon as they are in breach of a probation order. Abbotsford has been successful using the strategy, reducing home break and enters by 45 per cent and business break ins by 70 per cent. Focusing on the problem is also effective, as it was in Surrey when the fire department and bylaws shut down most of Surrey’s marijuana grow operations. Tracking the homes by their Hydro usage, the teams put a warning on the door saying they would be back to inspect. Most shut down.

Surrey Mounties are looking for anyone who has information about a vicious assault in Newton a year ago. On April 28, 2013, at about 1:30 a.m., RCMP responded to a report of an assault at the Secret Resto Lounge, near Scott Road and 72 Avenue. The victim, a 39-year-old Surrey resident, suffered several serious injuries, including multiple deep lacerations, contusions and a depressed skull fracture, which required

The four suspects (pictured) are believed to have attempted to attack a lounge staffer, but he was able to escape. “Indications are that the victim might have been trying to break up a fight, which attracted the attention of the suspects who assaulted him,” said Surrey RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet. “Although this investigation has progressed significantly since the attack, our investigators are looking for additional information that will assist them in bringing this matter to court.” Surrey RCMP’s Major Crimes Section is currently investigating. Mediator Vince Ready has met the two sides in B.C.’s festering teacher dispute and agreed to “monitor” the situation. The B.C. Teachers’ Federation and the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association announced Ready’s involvement in a joint statement last Thursday, confirming that he met separately with negotiators Wednesday. A media blackout on the
talks began last week and will continue. “Mr. Ready agreed to monitor the situation, and to resume exploratory talks or commence full mediation when he believes it will be productive,” the statement says. Talks broke off and a full-scale strike and lockout ended the school year in midJune. B.C. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Kelleher met both sides earlier but declined to attempt mediation, after finding too large a gap between the two sides. Seeking safe railways The final report of the Transportation Safety Board (TSB) into the Lac-Megantic rail tragedy, which killed 47 residents of the quiet Quebec town in July 2013, is a damning indictment of both Transport Canada and the poorly-run Montreal, Maine and Atlantic (MMA) Railway. Together, their indifferent attitude towards safety led to what the TSB report describes as 18 “factors” which came together to create the horrific tragedy. Could such a thing happen here? Could there be a series of factors which would cause a catastrophic incident in Surrey, White Rock or Delta? There is no doubt that rail traffic in the area is on the increase. Roberts Bank in Delta is the single biggest reason – its business is booming, and there are plans for further expansion. Right now, coal and containers are being shipped overseas, almost exclusively to Asia, from the port. Business increases on the coal side are partially due to a lack of coal shipping facilities on the U.S. west coast. Plans for coal ports have run into opposition in many areas, and the campaign against a planned coal transhipping facility at Fraser Surrey Docks is symbolic of problems U.S. coal shippers are
having. The U.S. government is also trying to reduce the amount of electricity generated by coal. Meanwhile, BNSF, which runs through White Rock, Surrey and Delta, is sending several coal trains a day to Roberts Bank. Crude oil is also being shipped here, although not in the unit trains like the one that piled up at Lac-Megantic. Both BNSF and CN regularly haul crude through this area, usually in smaller lots of 10 to 12 cars per train. Most is likely going to refineries in Burnaby or Northwest Washington. The attitude of Transport Canada towards rail safety practices, as outlined in the TSB report, is a concern. This agency is supposed to be the overseer of rail and other forms of transportation, yet apparently leaves it up to those companies to police themselves. MMA didn’t meet a number of deadlines and requests Transport Canada had set, and faced no consequences. One of the themes that comes through quite clearly in the TSB report is the lack of attention to safety practices on many levels at MMA. It is safe to say
that the four railways operating in this area, Canadian Pacific, Burlington Northern Santa Fe, Canadian National and Southern Railway of B.C., are much more safety-conscious. Because of that, it isn’t too likely that the many factors which led to the Lac-Megantic tragedy will re-occur here. However, sometimes it only takes one or two factors to cause a major problem. In two cases in the past 30 years, vandals derailed trains of B.C. Hydro Railway (Southern Railway’s predecessor) in Newton. Trains cannot stop easily, and both derailments caused significant property damage. Thankfully, no one was seriously hurt in either. The railways that operate in Surrey, Delta and White Rock need to take a strong role in demonstrating an emphasis on safety to the community, in particular local governments and first responders, but also citizens at large. Rail transport is a vital and important part of economic activity, but it must be conducted with a “Safety First” attitude at all times.

Evening, Day 1: Arrive at campground to discover that no one tents anymore. Except us, that is. Squeeze tent onto pad between two houses on wheels. Morning, Day 2: These houses on wheels are powered by generators. So peaceful. Late morning, Day 3: Park ranger leads us on a short hike from the campground. Most of us are families with younger children. Mom has happily wandered ahead. Dad follows the son who teeters along the strip of dirt. “Single file, buddy!” he chirps, a note of panic betraying his mellow pose. “Stick to the path, big guy! Single file! Watch where you’re going! Single file!” A small victory. Yes, my five-yearold’s palm is clutched firmly in my hand. But at least it’s not sweating. Later morning, Day 3: Reach a look-
out. It’s your standard viewpoint— trail ends at a wide open area, and at one end the land just falls away. There are no fences or warning signs. My still occasionally random five-year-old’s hand is still clutched in mine. Meantime, toddle toddle toddle toddle… there goes someone’s two-year-old toward the edge. Ten feet. Five feet… closing… There’s a parent about to intervene here, right? Morning, Day 5: Begin tearing down tent at our sun-bathed campsite, already past 30 degrees. Inside the tent, rolling up air mattresses, sleeping bags, packing children’s things it’s got to be 40 degrees. Attempts to usefully engage children in helping out have been abandoned as unpacking their mis-packing in order to pack feels a bit silly. Oldest son is cool in the car, read-
ing his comic book. “Let’s get a move on,” he mutters to me, and for the briefest of moments I feel apologetic. The heat has turned me perverse. Late Morning, Day 5: Discover ant colony under tent. Thousands of them, dashing in all directions, carrying little white… rice krispies? Ahh... eggs. Morning, Day 6: At a hotel now. A shower has revived the parents. Now in breakfast room, eating cardboard pastries and shiny fruit. A father nearby is having a fit over his son’s eating habits. “You always do this! Why do you always do this? I’ve told you over and over to stop doing this!” The boy is about six. The father is beaking in his ear. The boy is a sea of calm, not responding. Perhaps he

Turn on backyard sprinkler, and begin dismantling the car. Oldest son irritated that I’m not joining him in sprinkler, opting instead to unstuff our Toyota. Parents are so selfish.

▼ DURING TEACHERS’ STRIKE, SOME OLDER KIDS NEED HELP TOO

The government’s proposal to start paying parents with children 13 years and younger to go to the daycare or for tutoring because of the teachers’ strike is not wise. If this strike continues this money should be granted to all students of all ages. Older students in high school need support more than other students because the education is harder in high school. And not many parents/guardians can provide help and guidance for their older children. MLA Mike de Jong said “older children don’t require as much supervision and have online option to maintain their studies if the labor dispute takes more instructional time away.” But not all students can maintain their education online and alone. Many need help, not cause of disabilities but because of lack of concentration and attention towards online education. There only two ways this could go well. First is if the government agrees to the demands of the teachers and second is if they provide help to parents of children of all ages, not just kids under 13.
▶ THE CITY’S SITUATION HAS SPIRALED DOWNWARD FOR YEARS I gather from the headline of your recent article on crime statistics (The Leader, Aug. 14) that Dr. Rob Gordon is an expert on crime in Surrey. Dr. Gordon is not a police officer and does not live in Surrey. The last thing we need is another agenda in the mix here. How about asking Surrey-ites what we think? We’ve had a perfect storm for crime in Surrey for as long as I can remember. We’ve spiraled downward over the years by maintaining a low tax rate. That rate has attracted explosive population growth. Add to that a city and provincial government that have done little to mitigate the social problems created by this tremendous growth. Decades of random housing developments and strip malls popping up like game pieces on a Monopoly board are exacting their price. It takes over an hour to cross the city these days – if you’re lucky. Community concerns about growing crime, rapid growth, over development and a lack of social services have fallen on deaf ears, again for decades. Instead of solving the problems of Whalley we’ve expanded those problems to include Newton. And now we’re being told, again, that we don’t need more police officers, that crime in Surrey isn’t really that bad, and that if we have more police officers – damn it – we’re only going to report more crime. I don’t need anyone to tell me about crime in Surrey. I live here.

▼ COLUMNIST FARMS OUT BIZARRE COMMENTS
Re: “Farm changes a great leap forward” column (The Leader, Aug. 12). Tom Fletcher is confused about the Ministry of Agriculture’s consultation, which features a public survey. He mistakenly says it shows that changes in last spring’s ALR bill “have little or nothing to do with exclusions” of farmland from the ALR. That bill, which made exclusions easier in 90 per cent of the ALR (Zone 2), is now law. It’s no longer a current focus, in contrast to the survey about ALR regulations, which is open till Aug. 22. The simple reason the survey doesn’t mention the bill or ALR exclusions is that they’re another matter. It’s also illogical for Fletcher to imply that those who wanted consultation on the previous matter would oppose the current consultation. If anything, many want more of it. To top off confusion with bad taste, Fletcher mocks MLA Lana Popham’s photo and bizarrely ties a survey question to Mao Zedong’s Great Leap Forward, which cost millions of lives. Farm consultation a farce Re: Farm changes a great leap forward (B.C. Views, Aug. 12). Tom Fletcher’s opinions are not shared by any farmers I know. The B.C. government’s post-facto “public consultation process” is farcical given that Bill 24, which amends the Agricultural Land Commission Act, was passed this May. An authentic public consultation process should have been multi-year and provincewide, not invitation-only meetings and a one-month-long token public feedback process which highlights yet again the magnitude of our democratic deficit. Fletcher’s analogy to Mao Tse-tung’s Great Leap Forward is apt, however, given B.C.’s democratic deficit and because Mao’s vision gave rise to China’s Great Famine, resulting in tens of millions of deaths. The Great Leap Forward has been defined as “a very expensive disaster.” British Columbians will also pay a high price for the B.C. Liberal scheme to drastically change the ALR, as our food insecurity
will increase and farm land even more polluted. The “farming” activities proposed by the B.C. Liberals will reduce the land available to grow food. Alcohol has very limited nutritional value. The B.C. Liberals’ continued support for industrial agriculture, one of the world’s biggest causes of greenhouse gas emissions, combined with fracking, oil development and anaerobic digesters will further pollute farmland. Manure from organic farms is worth far more as fertilizer than as fodder for anaerobic digesters; only conventional farmers would seek to use their contaminated manure to generate power. The B.C. Since commercial production of wine or cider is allowed on farmland, why not a brewery, distillery or meadery? Should energy co-generation be allowed on farms, using manure or other biodegradable waste to produce methane gas and carbon dioxide? These are some of the questions included in the B.C. government’s consultation on changes to Agricultural Land Reserve regulations, released earlier this month. Others deal with controversial proposals to allow specified non-farm uses, secondary residences and subdivisions without permission from the Agricultural Land Commission. Developed after consultation with the B.C. Agriculture Council, local governments and the commission, the 11 questions offer more detail on changes the government is considering under legislation passed despite protests this spring. The legislation divided the ALR into two zones, to permit more flexibility in the Interior, Kootenay and North regions (Zone 2) where both agriculture revenue and development pressure are lower.
One question asks whether farmland in all of Zone 2 should be able to be subdivided down to a minimum of a quarter section (65 hectares) without application to the ALC, as is now allowed in the Peace River and Northern Rockies Regional Districts in northeast B.C. Another proposal is to allow subdivision without ALC approval where farmland is divided by a major waterway or highway, subject to a minimum size. The province is also considering relaxing lease rules, which currently permit leasing of an entire farm property without ALC approval. The consultation asks if a portion of property should be allowed for lease to permit “intergenerational transfer,� where farmers retire on a portion of their land so their children can continue to farm the rest. Another proposal for partial lease without ALC approval would allow unfarmed land to be brought into production. The partial leases would not require a formal subdivision. Agriculture Min-

A 43-year-old Surrey woman has pleaded guilty to three of four criminal charges laid after a violent confrontation with a mother and her three children aboard a transit bus in Langley on May 20. Leah Susan MacKay
appeared in Surrey Provincial Court last Wednesday (Aug. 13) afternoon to plead guilty to one count of assault, one count of assault with a weapon and one count of uttering threats. MacKay has been in jail since the incident, part of which was captured on video posted online, garnering much public attention. She was sentenced to time served, ordered to pay a $100 victim sur-
charge and given two years of probation. Langley RCMP said the confrontation occurred when MacKay got into an argument with the bus driver over nonpayment of her fare and the mother objected to her swearing. It was shortly after 10 a.m. There were several children on the bus in addition to the mother’s own three children. “The woman [MacKay] was using profane language causing the

complainant [the mother] along with other passengers to ask her to stop swearing,” a written RCMP statement said. The police report said MacKay then threatened to kill the mother and her children before throwing a drink at the youngest child, a boy who was less than one year old. The two women got into a brief physical fight, captured on a video later posted to YouTube by another passenger. Both women then exited the bus, MacKay escorted by the driver. The mother began walking toward the
Willowbrook Shopping Centre with her children. Police said MacKay ran after the mother and produced a knife, knocked over the complainant’s four-year-old daughter and kicked her other two-year-old daughter in the back. She was arrested 20 minutes later at her residence after a Surrey RCMP officer recognized the broadcast description as someone he had dealt with in the past. The identity of the mother is protected by a court order. The YouTube video of the fight has recorded more than 120,000 views.

ne may find counterintuitive a longestablished pattern in traffic safety statistics. The time of year when most of the external risk factors for safe driving are at their lowest—the sunny dry months of high summer offering clear visibility and smooth, sticky-not-slippery road surfaces—happens also to be the time of year in which most crashes, fatalities and injuries occur. Now as we approach the end of summer, our collective challenge becomes making it through the Labour Day weekend without reinforcing this pattern. It can be done with lots of mindfulness on the part of all road-users, a category that becomes more diversified with every new development in mobility technology: passenger car, SUV and van drivers, passenger bus drivers, light and heavy truck-drivers, motorcyclists, scooterdrivers, sport and city bicyclists—the list of bicycle types is ever-growing—pedestrians of all ages with varying degrees of selfpropelling mobility capability, including those who depend on walkers, multi-wheel scooters or wheelchairs, and the ‘fast skaters’: the rollerbladers, skateboarders, and longboarders. No doubt we have missed a type or two. It’s a mobile world out there and it takes a huge collective effort of mindfulness for everyone to share the roads, stay safe and not crash. The problem with summer is that everyone wants and tries to use the roads.

Sub-urbanites head into the city to enjoy the summer events on offer, while urbanites head in the opposite direction. Escape is their agenda. It’s the season for long family road trips, for short hops across the border or to the Gulf Islands, for late-night summer bar-be-ques, and early-morning bike rides. When you stop to think about the underlying reasons for this statistical pattern we see the reason - many people are on the move. The good news is that collective mindfulness involves nothing particularly new or different. Safety experts offer up the same old checklist…because the statistics show that collectively in the summer, despite more traffic volume, despite being on the road more often, we seem to forget the safety ‘shoulds’ and ‘should-nots’. For instance, drinking and driving is still a significant concern in the summer as is drug-impaired driving, texting and driving, and hand-held cell phone use while driving. Drivers of all vehicle types need to think in terms of lumping together all the behaviours that impede maximum clear-headedness, road focus, and attention while driving…and not doing them. Drivers also get tired—too tired to be driving—in the summer. The extra push late at night to make it to the desired destination can be the step too far. It happens. It can happen to any of us. The car may be stuffed to the gills with vacation gear. Don’t stuff it so that seat belts are difficult to dig out and worn properly. It’s also a great time to seat belt your pets. They need special consideration on long road trips as much as any other passenger. It is also the season for motorcyclists. Motorcycling road safety ‘trend lines’ are still heading in the wrong direction. Beautiful summer weather does not suspend the laws of physics regarding speed. We all need to remember this.

Surrey Army Cadet Angela Chang has completed her final week of training in the threeweek Basic Expedition Course at Vernon Army Cadet Summer Training Centre (VACSTC). Chang is a member of 2812 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps (Seaforth Highlanders). Included in her expedition training were lessons on how to select and navigate a route using maps, how to pack for an expedition, how to establish a daily routine, how to ride a mountain bike on trails and how to paddle a canoe on flat water.
The training was used during a five-day expedition in the hills overlooking the Okanagan Valley. The cadets also completed a swim test, and learned emergency first aid. For relaxation, the cadets spent a day sightseeing and shopping in Vernon and an afternoon at Kin Beach on Okanagan Lake. All three-week Basic Courses (leadership, sports and fitness, marksmanship, military band, pipes and drums and expedition) ended with a graduation parade on July 25 on Sicily Square at VACSTC. Reviewing Officer for the parade was Lieutenant Colonel Kevin Tyler, the Commanding Officer of the Rocky Mountain Rangers. During the summer, more than 1,200 Army Cadets from

Everyone has fond memories of their childhood summer vacations, spending time with family and friends and playing outside for hours. Now it’s time to make more of those memories with The Tides, just minutes from the Canada-U.S. border in Birch Bay, Washington. getaway. The developers of the property include two Canadian families, and most of the buyers so far are from the Lower Mainland. “You can’t touch real estate at this price anywhere in the Lower Mainland,” Hughes says. “It’s way more affordable to buy in the U.S., plus, there’s no property purchase tax. Losing just once in eight games, Surrey Storm ‘98 earned the bronze medal at the U16 Girls Fast Pitch Canadian Championship in Brampton, Ontario. The Storm topped Smitty’s ‘98 of Manitoba by a 6-2 score this morning (Sunday) to clinch third place at the 20-team competition. Jessica Fasolino pitched all seven innings for Surrey, striking out eight Manitoba batters while allowing one earned run on four hits and a walk. Demi Rose, batting in the designated hitter’s role, had a double and a single to drive in a pair of runs. Hailey Kjaer hit a two-run double and finished the game with three RBIs while Brooke Derkson had a pair of singles to drive in one run and score twice. Storm ‘98 cruised through pool play at the five-day tournament, topping their five-team group with four wins in as many games, including a 5-4 decision over the second-place Smitty’s ‘98 team. In a four-team group in the playoff round, the Storm were upset 3-2 by the Quebec Rebelles ‘98 on Friday morning. The Rebelles scored a pair of unearned runs in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead, but with just three hits in the game couldn’t add to their total. Surrey managed just four hits, but made the most of them. Rose singled in the top of the sixth inning, and scored on a base hit from Emily Manhao. In the seventh and

The Blazers led 3-0 after batting in the top of the sixth inning, despite Fasolino throwing a complete-game three-hitter that included eight strikeouts. A pair of Blazers errors allowed Manhao and Derkson to score from third base in the bottom of the sixth. In the bottom of the seventh, Emily Chordita singled to start the rally. Marina Cyr doubled to put two runners in scoring position, and both scored when Rose reached first base on an error. The Storm qualified for the national tournament with a third place finish at the Softball BC championships at Sullivan Park July 27, placing behind the champion White Rock Renegades ’99 and runner-up White Rock Renegades ’98.

After scoring twice in the top of the first inning, the North Delta Junior Blue Jays managed just two hits over the final six innings of their B.C. Junior Premier Baseball League (BCJPBL) championship game against the North Shore Twins. But it didn’t matter.
Starting pitcher Gota Kinoshita held the Twins to just three hits and one earned run, helping the Blue Jays hang on for a 2-1 victory and their second BCJBL championship in four seasons. The game, played Aug. 10 in Victoria, was the final of an eight-team playoff tournament. Kinoshita won the pitcher’s duel by allowing just one walk and striking out three North Shore batters. Daniel Gosselin received credit for a save, entering the game with a runner on base the seventh inning, then retiring the first three batters he faced to end the game.
Noah Or and Zach Besler led the game off with back-to-back singles, both runners eventually scoring for an early 2-0 lead after the top of the first inning. Gosselin got the win earlier in the day, when he threw the last three and twothirds innings of a 3-2 win over the Whalley Chiefs in a semifinal contest. The Blue Jays trailed 2-1 when they went to bat in the bottom of the fourth, but a single from Clay Sandover scored Kinoshita and Logan Newman. Gosselin allowed just one hit over the final three innings, maintaining North Delta’s one-run lead.
The Blue Jays were the third-seed in the tournament, behind the first-place Langley Blaze and the runner-up Twins. They won all three games to win their fourteam group and qualify for the playoff round. The Chiefs were the eighth-seed, but surprised the Blaze 3-0 and then upset the Abbotsford Cardinals 6-1 to earn second place in their group. Ken Dubois and Jared Alleman drove in runs in the fourth inning of their semifinal with North Delta to give Whalley a 2-1 lead, but the Chiefs couldn’t hang on.

Cloverdale’s first game of the tournament was a 15-10 victory over Calgary on Thursday evening, with Liam Knight of the Spurs going four-for-five at the plate with a double, three runs batted in (RBI)s and two runs scored. Romero Snow also had a trio of RBIs. An 8-3 victory over Regina on Friday morning clinched first place in their group and a place in Saturday’s semifinal playoff. The Spurs scored in each of the first five innings to take an 8-0 lead into the final two frames. Jonathon McGill was three-for-three with a double and three RBIs. The Spurs fell 4-3 to Pembina Hills of Manitoba in the final game of group play Friday evening. Trailing 2-1 in the bottom
of the sixth inning, Cloverdale went up 3-2 after McGill scored from third on a wild pitch and Knight singled to score Noah Dube. Pembina Hills scored twice in the top of the seventh for the win. Snow was the top batter for the Spurs with two hits, concluding a double, and an RBI. The Spurs faced North Winnipeg, the runner-up team from the other group, in Saturday’s semifinal and had little trouble in a 12-4 win. Cloverdale led 6-2 after the first inning, 10-2 after two and 12-2 after the third. Folick collected six RBIs on three hits for Cloverdale, including three on a first-inning home run. He added a two-run single in the second. Dube had a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Cloverdale qualified for the Western Canadian tournament by placing second at the Pee Wee AAA provincial championships in Cloverdale earlier this month.

Surrey softball organizers ramp up international efforts ▶ HOST COMMITTEE ATTENDS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN NETHERLANDS NICK GREENIZAN
Though Surrey was named the official host city for the 2016 Womens’ World Fastpitch Championships back in October of last year, it’s now about to get real for organizers. A small contingent from the city’s organizing committee – including chairman Greg Timm – left last week for Haarlem, Netherlands, the host site for this year’s 2014 world championships. The group will be on hand for the entirety of the tournament – which began last Friday and concludes on Sunday – and will spend time learning the ins and outs of the event from the 2014 organizers. As well, the Surrey group – which has previously stated its goal was to make the 2016 tourney the biggest in history, in terms of participating teams – will spend time speaking with other prospective teams, who may be interested in coming to Surrey in two years. “We are there to observe and develop some relationships with people… we’ve run a lot of big tournaments before, but nothing quite as this level, so we have a lot to learn,” Timm said. “I’ll be quite a bit smarter when I get back.” Timm is the pres-

In 2016, the world championships will replace the Canadian Open, and the latter event will return for 2017. Timm said many countries outside of the traditional softball powers likely think they don’t qualify for such a prestigious event. That isn’t the case, however, he said, and he will aim to change that perception during his trip. “We’ll spend some time explaining the (qualification) rules, and things like that, and see if we can’t get a lot of those teams to commit to our event.” As the next hosts, Timm and his team will also have a few official duties in the Netherlands. At the event’s closing ceremonies, they will take the tournament’s flag from
Haarlem and bring it
back to Surrey, where it will fly at a yet-to-bedetermined location until the 2016 games begin. “When we return home with the flag, that is when we will be the official host site,” he said, adding that until now, organizers have tried to tread lightly, lest they steal thunder from the 2014 tournament. “And that’s when the hardcore organization of it really starts. That’s when it becomes ours.”

Not sure if that’s a good thing, but I do like its more car-like driving dynamics. Not far south of the Canadian border, Mount Baker is a glacier-covered mountain that rises 3,286 m (10,781 ft) above sea level, which is over 900 m (3,000 ft) higher than Whistler, the best-known mountain in BC. Mount Baker is also regarded as the second most active volcano in the Cascade Mountain Range, after Mount St. Helens, but there’s been nary a puff since 1880.The Mount Baker Highway (Hwy. 542) starts in Bellingham (exit #255 off the I-5), winds east through a number of small communities and offers some interesting side tours along the way, before it climbs steeply and ends at Artist Point (1,567 m / 5,140 ft.). This large parking lot, which is about 10 km beyond the ski area, is closed during the winter months and has spectacular panoramic views, plus a selection of great hiking trails. The highway crosses the Nooksack River at Nugent’s Corner and tracks east, alongside the north fork of the river, through old

of the Nugent’s Corner roundabout, where you can also spot the historic Bethany Church (built in 1907) landmark. Nooksack Falls is just a short (and groomed) gravel road off the highway about 11 km (7 ml) east of Glacier,
which is the last community along the highway. You do have to scramble over some (slippery when wet) rocks to get to a good (and safe) fenced viewing area. The water takes a spectacular 30 m (100 ft) plunge, so a close-up view is definitely worth the extra effort. Interesting Eating Places: Anthony’s is an excellent choice for lunch or dinner in Bellingham. Situated in the harbour area it overlooks the marina and has views of the San Juan Islands. Great service, great fare (especially the seafood), all tables come with a view and the prices are very reasonable, compared to Vancouver. An after-meal stroll around the picturesque marina walkway also allows you to ogle hundreds of boats and yachts up close. Web site: anthonys.com The North Fork Brewery, Pizzeria, Beer Shrine and Wedding Chapel is an out of the ordinary and rewarding halfway (going or returning) restaurant stop on the Mount Baker Highway that’s known locally as “The Shrine”. Don’t be put off by the long name or its rustic appearance as the food is delicious and there’s an awesome selection of fresh brewed-on-site handcrafted beers. There’s nothing illegal about their choice on a multi-lane road but’s asking for trouble the least being caught behind parked cars. with Toyota. Subaru then layers on more power and sporty features into their compact car, the Impreza, to develop the WRX and WRX STI rally-inspired cars. These have been incredibly popular, once again, because they come with AWD and the closest competitors do not. Looks Back in 2011, Subaru introduced the WRX to look like the bolder and more powerful STI version, complete with bulging fender flares, hood scoops and aggressive attitude. This really helped to propel the WRX into another gear in terms of sales. To follow up on this idea, the latest 2015 model too has an edgy design similar to the more powerful STI version. It is the same overall length as the last model but the wheelbase is longer, making bigger doors and the designers were able to slope the front and rear windows and crop the roof a tad, to provide a sleeker profile. The front grille now has a more polished look but the wheel size is only 17-inches, making the car look too big for the size and track of the wheels. The STI only comes with 18-inch wheels that are too small as well. One big advantage is the side mirrors have been moved from the windshield pillar to the door, making the side class much bigger for improved outward visibility. Inside As wonderful as the last WRX was in terms of handling and power, the interior let it down. It was too bland, especially considering the top STI models can cost well over $40,000. This 2015 has been vastly improved but has a few niggly items that could be improved. The dash is covered with soft touch materials, the centre console has a better design, with a three easy to use heat and ventilation controls. The rest of the dash has been cleaned up with a much better looking design and more attention to colours and textures. The radio and accompanying Bluetooth system was horrible to pair with my Android phone and I had to do it several times after the initial pairing procedure to stay connected. The armrest for the driver is far too low to be of any use and the speedo and tach readouts are far too small to read
quickly. Plus, the key needs to used to release the trunk, I couldn’t find a trunk resale anywhere on the car. What the WRX does have is room for all passengers with big doors and very easy access, with a bigger trunk (once you can get it open) than the last model. Drive What the WRX is all about is providing a sporty drive and now it is available to a wider range of buyers thanks to a new automatic transmission. Subaru wants to sell more cars, not less, and by adding an automatic for a generation of buyers who might not know how to drive stick, is a major step. This is not your average automatic, it is a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that has one gear but the ratio of the gear is changed. This, along with the standard 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo with 268hp, produces a surprising snap at all speeds. Yes, a 6-speed automatic is still available but this new CVT makes the WRX easy to drive in town and it can fly when it is placed in the sportiest setting. Other than the new automatic, the most notable change is the much stiffer suspension and tighter steering feel. The front springs are 39% stiffer than the last WRX and the rears are 62 percent stiffer. This, along with a more rigid platform and tighter steering makes a very sharp feeling car. It might be too sharp for buyers who live with very bumpy roads. Verdict Subaru has done a good job with the WRX, the STI and the BRZ. Sporty design, powerful engines and AWD help but so too does price. The starting price is $29,995 and the most expensive WRX is $36,795. Compared with the closest competitors, the VW Golf GTI and Ford Focus ST, this car is right on the money but comes with AWD, whereas the others don’t.
