I want to welcome everyone to our 19th annual Prospectors Car Club Show and Shine. Thanks to all our club members for volunteering their time and effort in order to host this event. Thanks to all our sponsors big and small.... your donations are greatly appreciated and a huge thanks to all of you participants, without your special and unique cars we could not have this car show. To the City of Quesnel ...we appreciate you once again allowing us to hold our event on the streets of our city. Our club currently has 79 members. We hold regular meetings the second Tuesday of each month at Pinecrest School at 7 p.m. New members are always welcome. During the summer season we have Friday night cruises leaving the A&W North at 7 p.m, we go on garage tours and other social events. Members also enjoy attending car shows throughout the area. I have been enthused about cars all my life. I joined the Crusaders Car Club in Quesnel in the early 60s and have participated in car shows throughout B.C., Alberta and the USA. I love the hobby and where it is going. It is fascinating to see all the new trends and ideas as they evolve over time. Hope every one of you enjoys our car show and happy cruising. Our story begins 28 years ago when my mother wanted to buy an old car for my father as an anniversary present. We looked through car magazines and found two choices. An original 1955 Buick Special Convertible and a partly restored 1957 Chevy Belair Convertible. Both were in beautiful condition, so a choice had to be made. My Father chose the Buick, I said you are crazy, he replied, everyone has a Chevy. So we drove it home without any problems. After three weeks the seller of the car wanted to buy it back for three times the price we paid. Of course the answer was no. We did a little research, only 10,000 46C Buick Special Convertibles were made. The car was built in Flint, Michigan and was an ugly Sea foam Green, with a 264 V-8 automatic. The car was designed with the help of Harley Earl and his aircraft styling from the Spitfire fender ports, to cockpit windshield, dash, rear rudder style taillights and jet exhaust reverse taillights. In the early 90’s we decided to give the car a makeover, we repainted the car blue, Tradewinds Upholstery installed a new interior and top. We have put very few miles on the car since then. We have been in the Billy Barker Days parade many times and one of our passengers was Jim Patterson ( Mr. Overwaitea and Save on Foods). We have enjoyed owning this car as it has brought a lot of smiles, waves, memories and stories through the years. Happy Motoring.

Back in the mid fifty’s a cool car to have was a 2 door hardtop, even cooler was a convertible. So when Ford combined the two, I wanted one from then on. In the early sixty’s my workmate had one he wanted to sell me, having a wife and young daughter, as well as no extra money I passed it up. Thinking one would not be hard to get later on. From that time on, I never saw one on a car lot or advertised for sale. In the mid - eighties returning from my parents farm in Alberta, there was one for sale by the road just South of Prince George. Being late in the evening and needing to be to on early shift in the morning, I did not stop. I went back the first free evening I had that week, and it was already gone. In May of 2008 there was the one advertised in the Bargain Hunter, by a fellow in 100 Mile. I called him and he still had it. I rounded up a spare driver and drove it back to Quesnel that day. This is a little about the 6886th car of only 12,915 retractable hardtops, assembled in Dearborn, Michigan in 1959. When I brought it home it had oil leaking from the rear intake manifold and power steering, plus miscellaneous electrical and mechanical problems. I did not get much driving in 2008 and not a lot more in 2009. In June of 2010 the right rear quarter was badly damaged, when a young couple drove into it on a cruise with some car club members. The car spent over two years in the body shop while rounding up parts. The rear quarter panel came from Arizona, and the chrome from different places in B.C. and Alberta. But it is back to being the beautiful car you see today.

I had seen this 1938 Pontiac Coupe around Alexandria for several years, liked the lines and knew it was rare. When I decided to buy it, it was just a frame stuck in a creek bed, missing the motor, rad, hood, hubs and 90 percent of the chrome. I spent the next seven years f i n d i n g p a r t s at swap meets from Barrie, Ontario to Cloverdale, B.C. I stripped it down to the bare frame, completing all the body work myself. In 1979 I had an upholsterer do the interior and then it was ready for the first paint job. I replaced the 224 cu. in engine with valve in head with a 1967 230 Chevelle motor and power glide transmission. I traced the first owner to Nels Norberg and when the car was running I took him for a ride. Not sure who enjoyed that the most.

I was fortunate in the 50’s, 60’s, & early 70’s to drive and build numerous Ford cars. Being a Ford man and a mechanic by trade, I stuck strictly to fixing and building Ford engines, most of which were for racing. Over the years I bought and sold well over 100 different Fords, and worked on other engines for customers, too numerous to count. I was also fortunate enough to work on Fred White’s 1966 427 Fairlane and 1968 428 Cobra Jet, both of which were sponsored by Healy Motor’s. I have always preferred Mustangs and Fairlanes, but my biggest passion was to own a particular Shelby. The 1968 Shelby GT500 was bought from Healy Motors in Edmonton. I followed the history of this Shelby from the time it was ordered until about 1974 when the opportunity arose for me to purchase my dream car, which I am happy to say I still own today. My Shelby was specially ordered with a 427cu. inch, medium riser, dual BB780 C.F.M Holley Carbs. The following is also a list of original information on my Shelby. Factory H.P 425, Torque 480 lbs, N.H.R.A. Re-rated to 480 H.P., Speedo 60 M.P.H., Tack 8000 R.P.M., Black on Black, Power steering, tilt & slide steering column and wheel, Fold down back seat, roll bar & competition seat belts. When I purchased this car I installed a Holman & Moody 7000R.P.M. Camshaft kit, which is the only thing that is not original. This is one of three Shelby’s built with a 427 option in 1968.

It all began in the spring of 2011. Randy stopped at a local shop that deals with custom and classic auto parts a few times and ended up talking cars. On one visit to this shop Randy was shown some pictures on the computer of a 57 Chevy car that was for sale in Dawson Creek. It was in need of some serious restoration. He got in touch with the owner. Found out he didn’t want too much for it. Made arrangements to go get it a few weeks later. Took a friend and a borrowed trailer and went on a road trip. Well it was in worse shape than the pictures showed. There was no motor, gauges, seats , glass etc. Had been sitting on the ground. Needed a lot of work. Looking around the field there were actually several more autos in the lot. Some in worse shape and a few in better. One being a 1953 Chevy 4 door sedan. Had a running motor, glass, and an interior. Much better shape than the 57. Not as many parts missing, equals less work to be done. Not wanting to come home empty handed, he bought it. Made arrangements with a local to have the body work done. Ordered new struts and a few other metal pieces. Took the car apart in July so it was ready for the body shop in the fall. It was early spring and the car hasn’t even made it
into the body shop yet. It was going to be a long time before we would be on the road. While waiting for it to go into the shop, Randy learned how to browse the internet and Kiji on his new computer. He spotted a 57 Chevy ( what he really wanted to begin with). It was a 4 door, but that was OK. Teal blue with a white top. 283 motor, 3 speed on the tree. He liked it. Decided not to wait, he wanted something to cruise in. Kelly Lautsch

In the spring of 2012 he found on Kiji a 1957 Chevrolet 210 for sale. He took his family to Kitimat B.C. to look at it. I bought it and drove it that summer. Had lots of fun with the Quesnel club and friends. In late fall, Dale ( of Tradewinds Upholstery) and Randy took out the motor and brought it to Quentin Terrico to rebuild. Cars in Prince George did the machine work for the motor. That winter Gary Fox and Randy rebuilt the transmission and rear end.

Randy’s Car Continued In March of 2013 the car went to Ron Meyers for body work. The body came off the frame and was put in the rotisserie. Took out the rust pieces that needed to be changed and replaced them. The whole car was taken down to bare metal. He painted the frame, firewall and the under body. During the summer the back bumper went to Kelowna Electroplating. Spare tire cover went to Kirk Wawryk ( of VanGoat Designs) for some fantastic art work. The steering box went to Steering Solutions in Langley B.C. and the radiator went to Prince George Rad. In the beginning of fall Randy brought the car home from Ron’s. Kelly and Randy talked about who should get to finish the car. Earlier in the spring they had seen some cars during a shop tour hosted by the Crusin Classic’s Car Club in Prince George that Pat Moore ( of Pipe Dreams Custom’s ) had done. Called Pat late in October to come down, take a look at the car and give a price to finish it. The car left home again. Off to Pat’s for the winter. He had a car and a Bronco to do first. Starting in late March/2014 Pat refit all the parts he could and painted the car. Sanded and polished it to perfection. In April Randy took the seats to Tradewinds Upholstery. Sheila and Randy took them apart and redecked them. Brought the frames home, painted and took them back . The three stuffed and prepped them for Dale to put the covers on. Dale installed the interior kit. I’d like to thank my friends, especially Dale and Sheila for all the help I got. It was fun ( most of the time ). Thank you to Pat Moore for the awesome paint job, it was worth every penny. Thanks to Lisa Moore for picking up the 500 LBS of bent and broken motor parts from Cars in P.G. to make hard luck trophies for Quesnel Show and Shine. Thank you to Oldedays Classic Car Parts for working so hard to get parts and my interior in time for the June car show in Penticton. We made lots of new friends on the way. Also a very special thank you to my aunt and uncle for picking up parts all year. The only thing she asked for was a ride in the car when it was finished. Thank you to Dave at Memory Lane for parts and for giving me the car bug. Kelly may have a different opinion of Dave’s infection. She didn’t get her yard finished. Ha! Ha! Ha! It’s all Dave’s fault. Barrett-Jackson industry’s late 1950’s flamboyance than the 1959 Cadillac. These big finned Caddys are synonymous with Rock and Roll, Elvis, Marilyn, bobby socks and drive Ins. In many ways they represented the peak in American affluence with towering tailfins, immense amounts of chrome and overpowering size. What makes these cars distinctive to auto enthusiasts is their famous twin bullet style taillights set into the tallest tailfins of any production car. Cadillacs were built in Flint Michigan during the time of America’s obsession with the cold war and the race for space. Thus, designers captured the look of a sleek jet fighter with long low lines and imitation exhaust ports. The car looks like it’s doing a hundred miles an hour at a dead stop. My massively cool behemoth is 18 feet 19 inches long and weighs in at 4,720 pounds. The power, to make this big coup move is supplied by a 325 horsepower 390 cubic inch displacement V8 coupled to a Hydromatic four speed automatic transmission. Other glitz and glamour options supplied in this luxury sport model is EZ Eye tinted glass, power steering, power brakes, power windows, six-way adjustable power seat and an autronic eye which dims the headlights for oncoming traffic. Also supplied standard for De Ville models was a Wonderbar radio, four ashtrays with lighters, and center arm rests front and back. My Cadillac originally came from California and it got a dealer installed air conditioner in Boise, Idaho in 1960. It only took me a few weeks of groveling to convince my wife that we needed a classic car. The year was 1992 and if there was an internet we hadn’t heard about it, so after many hours of searching the classifieds and a couple of road trips we finally narrowed our quest to a dealership in Vernon. They had two Cadillacs for sale from a private collection. The first one we looked at was a black ’57 Biarritz (convertible) with a new white top. Next to it sat this beautiful two tone’59 Coupe De Ville to which Peggy was immediately attracted. Needless to say, I was powerless to resist and after a couple of test drives she made up my mind. We have never regretted the choice we made as our classic car has given us many years of enjoyment. Although the Biarritz would have appreciated more in dollar value, nothing can replace the iconic looks and style of the ‘59. Looking back the only thing that I regret is that I couldn’t afford them both. In the 55 years since my car was built, I’m not sure exactly how many people have had the pleasure of owning her, but I do know that they all looked after her well and I intend to do the same. “From Fresh Ideas to Finished Product”

On March 21, 1990 I bought this jeep from a dealer in Prince George. It was Baltic blue with stripes, my first 4-wheel drive ever. I took it fishing with a boat on roof racks through lots of mud holes as well as driving on steep inclines. I drove it year-round. In 2000 I realized that I didn’t see Cherokees of this style any more so because it was still in very good shape. I wanted to restore and preserve it so I stripped it out, including the interior and motor and everything else and started to put it the way I wanted it. It took until 2005 to get the ideas together (and the money.) I just about quit part-way through but persevered through to what I wanted. I think I’m about done but I could change things again. My wife calls it my mistress because it has more bling than her; she is a wonderful supporter but is still a bit jealous. The motor is 258, in-line 6, R.V. cam, dual plane plentum, Offinhauser intake, 500 cfm carb, with ceramic coated Clifford 2-piece headers (3 inch), 727 transmission with B & M deep pan (12 L.) Stock pumpkins 44 front, AMC 20 rear, lots of powder coating, rhino lined from firewall to tailgate, rear seat removed with bed-slide installed. New carpet front and rear footwell, aluminum side panels in rear, 6-way power seats with iron horse consol. New upholstery, new tailgate and door rubbers, blacked-out side and rear windows, sun visor, KC driving lights, AC, tilt, cruise, power steering, power brakes and mirrors. Heavy duty rear bumper with swing-away spare tire. Front heavy duty bumper with bush guard, powder coated and just installed, custom instrument panel changed to auto-meter gauges with tachometer.
13 About 10 years ago a friend from Smither’s B.C. called to ask if I was interested in another project. He told me it was a 38 Ford pickup. I looked it up to see what it looked like and was not sure if this is what I would do. After a few more calls from my friend I thought I would take my car hauler for a drive and look at the truck. I decided to buy it because it was pretty much rust free and I was told that the truck had been purchased new in the area and was a one owner last driven in 1972 and since then barn stored. Thought what the heck and made the purchase and back home to P.G. I already had a Chevy 396 motor and transmission so I again said what the heck and proceeded to begin the four-year build. Once completed I headed for the Peach City cruise in Penticton and the truck ran flawlessly there and back and we've been just about everywhere with it and is a daily driver in the good weather. We made a run to Terrace B.C. for riverboat days last August and a great time was had once again. Look forward to the Quesnel car show again this year.
