Lake Countryâs farmers market has jumped at the chance to add wine tasting to its weekly market after new B.C. legislation opened the door to the possibility earlier this year. New B.C. liquor laws are allowing wine tasting and sales at B.C. farmers markets and Lake Country market manager Janeen Olson says itâs a great fit at the Lake Country market, which takes place every Friday in Swalwell Park. âThe new laws allow wineries to have a satellite tasting room so we donât have to get additional licensing,â said Olson. âYou can do a small tasting or buy a bottle of wine, but you canât drink the wine in the park. âI think it adds a tremendous amount to the market. It finally completes it. We are wine country and this makes it more of a complete experience for tourists and locals. People can get their vegetables and fruit
and now their wine.â The first month of wine tasting featured Lake Countryâs Living Waters Organic Winery and Olson says she has had interest from several other wineries as well as craft beer brewers. She says she would like to have a well-rounded representation from Lake Countryâs wine industry at the market as the wine tasting component grows. âIâve had more interest from wineries and weâve just gotten the ball rolling with this,â Olson said. âMy thought eventually is Iâd like to rotate some wineries. That way we would have good representation. Weâre very pleased so far and I know more wineries will jump into the mix soon.â Providing liquor at a family-friendly event could be seen as walking a fine line. But Olson says she hasnât heard any negative comments about the new addition to the Lake Country market. âI havenât had any
kind of negative feedback,â she said. âNo one person has said one negative thing. Everyone is very supportive. We are not encouraging drinking in the park. Itâs just a taste testing. Itâs bringing positive attention to the community.â According to Olson, this year has been a good year so far at the Lake Country Farmers and Crafters Market. More than 30 vendors have regularly been showing up and Olson said there is a positive vibe amongst the vendors and the public. âThey really like the atmosphere at the market,â she said. âWeâre pretty easy-going, thereâs not a lot of conflict out here. Weâve had lots of new vendors and really great stuff this year. Weâre getting amazing support from the vendors, the artisans and the public.â The Lake Country Farmers and Crafters Market runs Fridays from 3 to 7 p.m. at Swalwell Park.
Customs & Classics coming up The Sixth Annual Lake Country Customs and Classic Car Show is set to go Aug. 23 and 24 and is expected to be the biggest event in the showâs history. Car show organizer Ron Volk this yearâs event will feature up to 400 cars and trucks set up at Swalwell Park in Lake Country. The show is free to the public however the pub-

lic is asked to bring a donation for the food bank. The two day event will begin on Saturday with the cars doing a cruise around Lake Country hosted by the Lake Country Chamber of Commerce. The cars will start to assemble on Main Street at 4 p.m. and the cruise will start ay 5 p.m. The Sunday portion of the show at Swalwell
Park will be run by Volk along with wife Kathy and their volunteers. There will be live entertainment all day featuring the Flashback Band and Almost Alan a Tribute to Alan Jackson. There is also a water park on site for the kids along with food vendors. The Lake Country SEE CAR SHOW A3
