A group of volunteers spent a recent Saturday wading in Hoy Creek but they weren’t just taking a cooling dip. The Coquitlam group was on a mission to clean out the urbanized creek so salmon can run freely during spawning season this fall. “It’s a risk to wildlife,” said Rodney Lee, Hoy/ Scott Watershed Society hatchery manager, of the trash that ends up in the creek system, explaining that when people carelessly drop their litter or discard larger items instead of taking them to the dump, fish and animals can be harmed. The message is loud and clear: the future of Riverview Hospital in Coquitlam must reflect its past as a mental health care hub. This week, BC Housing unveiled its results from the second set of open houses held in May, which are part of the agency’s year-long visioning exercise on what can be done with the 102-year-old site. And its results match the findings from the first set of open houses held earlier this year that show most respondents want to keep the grounds as a health and wellness centre. They also want to preserve the green spaces on the 244 acres. “There is overwhelming support for a mental health facility,” said Coquitlam Coun. Craig Hodge, chairperson of the city’s Riverview Lands Advisory

The society is calling for programs for SAMIs — Severely Addicted Mentally Ill people — at Riverview to alleviate demand at Burnaby Centre for Mental Health and Addiction. It also wants to see an acute care hos-

pital at Riverview, an education and training centre, a health and wellness business park, and dedicated park space. The society’s report is similar to the city’s submission to BC Housing. In June, the city — which controls the land use at Riverview — put forward its request to build an acute care hospital and centre for excellence to treat people with severe mental illness. The city report was based on the findings by Dr. John Higenbottam, a former

Riverview vice president. Metro Vancouver has also asked for more community partnerships, and conservation and ecological connectivity between Riverview and Colony Farm. Formal reports were also submitted to BC Housing by the TriCities Homelessness and Housing Task Group an d th e Ri ve r v i ew Horticultural Centre Society. Besides mental health care and green spaces, the other priorities for Riverview as noted by the open house attendees are: • a teaching hospital; • a museum; • an education facility; • social housing; • amenities and services that support mental wellness; • and trails and bike paths. Dates for the third set of open houses are expected to be out next month.

9 stream cleanup, the six volunteers scoured the creek from behind the No. 1 fire hall off of Pinetree Way to Glen Drive, filling up six garbage bags full of trash, collecting two bags of recyclable items, and pulling out three chairs, three tires, a garage door opener drive mechanism and a shopping cart. “What is apparent is that garbage left on nearby trails does find its way into the stream,” said Lee, who asked that people not treat this important urban stream as a garbage dump. Aug. 9 was selected as trash pick up day because it was during the fisheries window when there aren’t any spawning salmon, eggs or fry in the creek. More of the creek system could have been cleaned up with more people to help out. residents can bin their bins next month Coquitlam homeowners who get their trash picked up at the curb can put their old bin out to be recycled next month — for free. Between Sept. 1 and Sept. 30, residents will be able to place their old metal or plastic can out for collection by the city’s new contractor, BFI Canada; the company started automated collection on July 2. Homeowners are asked to leave their old can at the curb on their designated garbage day by 7:30 a.m. The old can must be cleaned out and, if there are more than two, they must be stacked inside each other. Residents who miss the September collection are asked to take their old cans to Wastech on United Boulevard where they can be recycled at no cost. Meanwhile, homeowners who want to upor down-size their new 240 litre carts have until the end of the year to contact the city. Homeowners who want a 120 litre cart will save around $70 a year on their utility bill starting in 2015 but those who prefer to have more room for their trash may order a 360 litre cart, which will add another $120 annually to their bill. The popular Book Bus that has brought reading materials to thousands of Coquitlam residents is being resurrected thanks to a community fundraising campaign — and the driver couldn’t be happier. Sal Kiridena feared the fire that destroyed the Coquitlam Public Library’s Book Bus in May would also kill the program that connects residents in far-flung areas of the city with the city library. He was elated to learn CPL has not only planned to lease a temporary replacement but would seek community and business support for a replacement bus. The commitment means Kiridena is continuing to visit Cottonwood and Victoria Park neighbourhoods each week with a rented van full of books people can check out. “I have to give credit to management for giving a green light for another one,”he said.“I hope someone in the community will come out and step up to the plate and help us out with this because it’s such a benefit to the community.” The longtime library assistant took it hard

The bus stops Thursdays at Victoria Hall and Saturdays at Cottonwood Park. when the bus caught fire from what may have been an over-heated engine. “It was devastating,” said Kiridena of the incident, which resulted in severe damage to the truck and caused the Pinetree Way branch to be evacuated. Library director Todd Gnissios said Kiridena was inconsolable after the fire. “We don’t have a lot of money,” Gnissios said.“He really felt that would be

the end of the program.” But with the library board behind the renewal, and a community ready to rally around the fundraising campaign, the library is at least closer to replacing the burned bus. A corporate sponsor or very large donation is still needed to bankroll the project, which could cost between $70,000 and $250,000, depending on whether the library can get a secondhand or new bus.

Patrons using the mobile service at Victoria Hall on Thursday are also hopeful the burned bus can be replaced and the service maintained for the future. Illonne Utian said she has been bringing her grandson, Shaun, to the Book Bus for a few years and said the boy has taken up reading thanks to the collection of books and Kiridena. “Sal is fantastic with the children,”she said. PoMo police urge drivers to lock doors A weekly update from the Port Moody Police serves as a reminder to lock your vehicle and not leave anything valuable inside. In the week of Aug. 9 to 18 a vehicle was stolen from the Legion Manor on Hope Street with help from the spare keys left in it, while two more thefts from vehicles were reported in the 2400block of St. George

Street. Another vehicle was broken into in the Westmount Drive area and on Bedard Crescent an unlocked vehicle was looted. Propane leak blamed for PoCo trailer explosion A family vacation to Oliver concluded with a bang after a Port Coquitlam family’s trailer exploded in their driveway late Saturday night. The McIntosh family has done the weeklong trailer camping trip to Oliver with friends for several years. This year, it coincided with 1 3 - ye a r- o l d C a r s o n McIntosh’s baseball tournament and, after he and his Tri-City Indians teammates won the Big League Experience camp trophy, the family headed home at about 2 p.m. They pulled into their Anderson Way driveway about five hours later and, exhausted, they decided to put off unpacking until the morning. “We put the propane on so the food wouldn’t spoil,” McIntosh said. Shortly before 11:30 p.m. the trailer exploded with enough force to wake up neighbours as far as two blocks away. “The house shook,” McIntosh said. “I don’t k n ow h ow I s l e p t through it.” She’s guessing the explosion was caused by the refrigerator turning on; PoCo Fire Chief Nick Delmonico said initial reports suggest it may have been due to a propane cylinder leak. “The family was all in the house so there were no injuries but it totaled the trailer from a damage perspective,” he said. McIntosh said their Oliver campsite offered an electrical hook-up so they hadn’t used the pro-

solated, frail seniors and people with mobility issues who live alone in a single-family home will be among those hardest hit by new Canada Post plans to discontinue house-to-house mail service by 2019. While it’s understandable that Canada Post would want to re-visit so-called “snail mail” delivery and look for efficiencies in an era of digital communication, the national postal service shouldn’t discriminate against individuals who are unable to use the new community mail boxes for one health reason or another. But coming up with a simple solution to help these people is proving to be a challenge. Canada’s national mail carrier deserves credit for appointing a dedicated team to work out adjustments and accommodations for individuals with mobility issues, but requiring a doctor’s note to prove need seems heavy-handed. Surely, there are other ways to handle this situation without going to such extremes. Many of those who need home delivery are likely to be in straitened financial circumstances with few supports.Yet they should also be given credit for their independence and not having to rely on taxpayer-subsidized housing or hospital assistance. It seems reasonable to take them at their word rather than requiring a doctor’s note to justify a special accommodation. Even Canada’s doctors are crying foul, arguing that this requirement will burden doctors and the already expensive health care system. Perhaps Canada Post could consider allowing seniors and disability advocacy organizations to be referral agencies. An automated telephone service could also be implemented, similar to one used for Employment Insurance, for people needing special accommodation. True, there may be some people who take advantage of the situation without a proper screening. But rooting out these fraudsters might be more costly than simply going by the honour system. Like the SkyTrain fare gates situation where the solution to fair evasion is more costly than the problem, trust is cheaper.

What we know about the Mount Polley mine spill BC VIEWS Tom Fletcher VICTORIA oday I’ll attempt to cut through the speculation and fear-mongering that have swirled around the Mount Polley mine dam breach and tell you what’s really known. As Black Press and our local publication the Williams Lake Tribune reported before and after the incident, the mine reopened in 2005 after a four-year shutdown and was expanding its operation, including the tailings pond. Rising metal prices helped put 380 unionized employees plus management back to work. Most are now working on rebuilding the tailings dam and cleaning up the spill site. Imperial Metals applied earlier this summer for an increase in water discharge and was waiting for B.C. government approval at the time of the Aug. 4 dam breach. This was to be the second amendment to a water

release permit issued when the mine started up in 1997. It has had a surplus of water due to rain and snow accumulation since it opened (under an NDP government, for those who want to turn everything into a political corruption story). The reason water release has been allowed is that in the absence of acid-producing rock, metal contamination of water is minimized. Imperial Metals’ routine tests with rainbow trout in undiluted tailings pond water have now been confirmed by environment ministry results and water and fish from all but the immediate spill area have been cleared for human consumption. For an example of acid mine drainage, look up the Britannia Mine Museum, now a reclaimed national historic site with a water treatment plant built to function for hundreds of years. Before that, acid-produced toxic metal pollution drained from the abandoned mine into Howe Sound for decades. Early tests at Mount Polley indicate that this sort of long-term water remediation

may not be required. The initial pulse of suspended sediment didn’t last long enough to affect fish in most of Quesnel Lake, much less the Fraser River system. Sediment tests show elevated iron and copper, with “leachability” results to come. Containment and removal will have to be undertaken. On May 24 of this year, Mount Polley received the first high water warning in its history. This was not a “breach,” contrary to some reports. The latest water permit application and work to raise the dam took place after that. It’s not difficult to deduce from aerial photos what was happening as mine management found ways to extend operation, including an underground phase. The pond was filling up with pulverized rock, reducing its capacity to hold water. Most of the accumulation is still there for all to see, as is the cross-section of the dam so abruptly exposed in the wee hours of Aug. 4. It may be months before inspectors and geotechnical engineers can determine the

cause of the breach, which occurred with the water level 2.5 metres below the top of the dam, well within permit specifications. Either the design of the earthworks was not adequate, or it was not adequately followed. TV crews have packed up and left, after sucking out the initial drama and retailing every sensational claim they could find. Tourism operators are pleading with people not to turn their backs on the region after that influx of visitors. Professional environmentalists are now exploiting Mount Polley as part of their campaign to de-industrialize B.C. A key propaganda tool is a single picture of a salmon with skin removed from part of its dorsal region. More consultation needed on ALR

What about the bottle collectors? The Editor, I am writing in regards to the new recycling rules in Coquitlam. Although I understand it for the most part, the one thing that I find to be illogical is the fact that you can no longer put deposit items in your blue box. In reality, these items were never actually picked up by the recycle truck. Those industrious people in the morning picked them up. Now they have to be physically brought in to the depot by the homeowner. What about the people who have no car, don’t drive or do not have the ability to get there? Those depots are not located close to everybody. Not to mention, it has put these people who pick them up in the morning “out of a job” as it were. Probably a lot of people relied on that extra income. I would bet that more than a few people will feel “forced” to hide these items in their regular garbage now. I am still going to put mine out in the hopes that they will still be picked up by the hard working, early risers. The people out before the recycle trucks, that is. Jan Dixon Coquitlam

Tom Fletcher is confused about the Ministry of Agriculture’s consultation, which features a public survey. He mistakenly says it shows that changes in last spring’s ALR bill “have little or nothing to do with exclusions” of farmland from the Agricultural Land Reserve. Strengthening family connections and helping people gain knowledge and understanding of mental illness are the goals of a new course being offered to Tri-City residents by the New View Society. Developed by the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the Family to Family course has helped hundreds of families learn about mental illness. And starting in September, the 12week training program will be offered in this area to help families who have a relative with a severe mental illness. Families often feel alone when faced with mental illness and their ability to advocate and navigate the system is often fraught with frustration, said Nancy Ford, executive director of the North Shore Schizophrenia Society. Her organization hopes that by introducing the Family to Family course here, people in the Tri-Cities will develop the capacity to deal with mental illness. They’ll

n Italian-sung comic opera penned by an Austrian composer and set in Spain will move this month to India for a Coquitlam show. The highly innovative DragonDiva Operatic Theatre will present The Marriage of Figaro, its third Opera on the Lake production at the Evergreen Cultural Centre. Last year, the New Westminster-based company romped it up with Candide while in 2012 it put a spin on The Old Maid and the Thief, the first radio opera commissioned by NBC in 1939. For Figaro, artistic director Jeanine Fynn wanted to spice things up with Mozart’s piece — a cornerstone of operatic repertoire — by setting it in India instead of Seville, Spain. “We wanted to take a year to do something very traditional,” said music director and board president John Arsenault, “however, we can never do anything in the traditional style.” When the opera premiered in Paris, France, more than 200 years ago, it caused a scandal because the maid, Susanna — a servant — outwits her employer, who is an aristocrat. And since the script by Pierre Beaumarchais was based on the class divide back then, DragonDiva made it current by relocating the scenes to India, where a caste system remains today. “It’s really a story about people and relationships and faithfulness,”Arsenault said. Riley McMitchell, the company vice president who portrays the philandering Count, said the actors have had to be quick studies of the Indian culture since rehearsals began in June.

As well, to smooth the transition, a friend of McMitchell’s from Mumbai was recruited to refine the ethnic gestures. “We wanted to make sure we weren’t doing anything that might be offensive to that culture,”Arsenault said, “and we wanted to be somewhat authentic.” McMitchell, who is a teacher at Coquitlam’s Lord Baden-Powell elementary, said the clothing and sets are visually stunning, with bright colours and decorations.

ble of 13 includes Royal City resident Melissa Bideau as the Countess, Katrin Poemmerl as Susanna and and Henry Chen as Figaro. “It’s not just your typical opera production,” McMitchell said. “DragonDiva always has a unique spin on things and we think setting it in India presents a really unique perspective. “For someone who hasn’t seen The Marriage of Figaro before, it’s a really interesting gateway to opera. And for anyone who has seen it, the Indian set-up is such a great concept.”

No wins at worlds Two Grade 1 pipe bands with strong links to the Tri-Cities placed in the top 10 at last weekend’s world championships in Glasgow, Scotland. The SFU Pipe Band took seventh spot — a drop from last year when it reaped fourth position — while the Port Coquitlambased Dowco Triumph Street earned 10th place — the same rank as in 2013. The 68th annual contest was won for the fourth year in a row by Field Marshal Montgomery of Northern Ireland. Meanwhile, SFU drum major Jason Paguio defended his title in the adult grade while SFU’s junior Robert Malcolm Memorial band earned fifth prize for the novice juvenile category. When it comes to making the most of time, Rebecca Karpus is the master. In late spring, after graduating with her bachelor degree in performing arts from Capilano University and getting word she was accepted to the master’s program at SFU in September, Karpus decided to strike out with her first dance show. “In between finishing school and starting again, I wanted to do something that I’ve been very, very passionate about in my life,” the Maple Ridge resident said. “It thought, ‘If it’s not now, I’m not quite sure when it will be.’ This is my time.” A ballet instructor for The danceLAB in Coquitlam, Karpus recruited her cousin, Amanda Gillies, and Megan Wainman, with whom she has danced since a teen, to create original choreography for In Colour. She also hired Lindsay Warnock to compose the music. In Colour, which will be presented on Aug. 29

at Coquitlam’s Evergreen Cultural Centre, centres around three dancers, each embodying the “personalities”of red, yellow and blue. Red is associated with love, romance and fire while blue is quiet and reserved and yellow translates to happy and bright. The three colours are often seen together, especially in visual arts (the RYB model is a historical set of colours used in subtractive colour mixing). Her choreography explores the colours’ relationship to one another on the stage while offering striking images. Karpus compared the colour triad to close friends: red is the fiery, tempermental character while blue is the sad soul and yellow is the friend with the cheery disposition. PMAC expansion, in photos The mega-move of a Port Moody heritage home — and how it was linked to another historic house a few blocks away — has been documented in a new photo exhibit. Making the Connection opens next month at the Port Moody Arts Centre, timed to coincide with the grand opening of the atrium that will join the Appleyard House with PMAC. The photo display will include some 150 images snapped by PMAC employees. Curator Janice Cotter said staff, including executive director Bruce Campbell, used high-quality

cameras, iPads and even a pointand-shoot to capture the transformation with stills and video; the Appleyard family also lent 10 old pictures of their home for the show. Cotter said the $200,000 expansion project has been “amazing” to witness and staff are excited about the new digs, which will allow for more programming at the city arts hub. In terms of the space re-allocation, the glass atrium will become the new reception while the existing main gallery/lobby will turn into the Canadian Pacific Gallery — big enough to accommodate 3D

Bennett to be inducted in soccer hall of fame North Coquitlam United SC head coach and technical director Chris Bennett will be officially inducted into the Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame this fall. The announcement came last week, noting the Canadian footballer’s long history in the game, which began in North Vancouver in the 1970s. Over three decades in the game, he represented Canada 65 times as both a player and a coach and was also a member of the men’s national team and the Olympic squad. Bennett is also an original White Cap, joining the club in the North American Soccer League in 1974, eventually going on to play with the Seattle Sounders, Memphis Rogues and the Cleveland Fo r c e o f t h e MISL. Injuries cut short his playing days and in the 1980s he dedicated himself to coaching. He began working with the squad in Coquitlam as a technical director in 2001 before taking on some head coaching duties with the organization last year. His induct i o n c e r e m o ny will take place in Vaughan, Ont., on Nov. 9.

Coquitlam Jr. Adanacs fans may have preferred to see their team play the Minto Cup finals at the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex, but for James Rahe the Langley Events Centre will work just fine. The young forward has played the bulk of his junior career with the Langley Thunder, joining Coquitlam in July as the club prepared for its post-season run. On Sunday, his comfort level in the Langley facility was on display as he scored three goals and registered 11 shots in the the Jr. Adanacs game two victory over the Six Nations Arrows. Coming off a tightly played game one win the night before, the Adanacs wasted little time lighting up the scoreboard on Sunday

night. Eli McLaughlin potted the first goal of the game before Rahe scored back-to-back markers to give his team a 3-0 lead midway through the first. Two unanswered goals from Tyler Pace early in the second, including one shorthanded, built a lead that the Arrows were never able to catch up with. Rahe, who was third in B.C. Jr. ‘A’ Lacrosse League scoring in the regular season, rounded out his hat trick in the third period on the power play when he buried a pass from captain Wesley Berg, who had five assists on the night. The Arrows did manage to close the scoring to within one when Quinn Powless buried his second of the game on a deadly backhand that may be the goal of the series so far.

However, Six Nations was unable to tie things up and aside from a shorthanded goal by Shane Simpson later in the third, the team could not rally its offence. Even switching net minders in favour of backup Don Alton was not enough to spark the team, which lost game two 11-6 to the Adanacs. Game 1 was not as easy for the Coquitlam club. The Arrows scored off the opening face-off eight seconds into the bout and took a 2-0 lead with 8:59 left in the first. However, the Adanacs slowly found their game, with Wesley Berg opening the scoring for Coquitlam and Pace tying it up shorthanded 24 seconds later. Two m o r e u n a n swered goals by the Arrows followed but a turning point came

when Berg managed to intercept a pass from Brier Jonathan and tuck it past net minder Doug Jamieson. Jean Luc Chetner tied up the game a short time later but the Arrows responded with two goals of their own, including one off the stick of captain Johnny Powless. McLaughlin had a pair of goals for the Adanacs before Berg scored the go-ahead marker on the power play midway through the third period. The two teams were expected to face-off Tuesday night at 8 p.m. after The Tri-City News’ deadline before game four on Wednesday, also at 8 p.m. All games are being played at the Langley Events Centre.
