It was a reunion between families and the staff who cared for them. More than 80 families attended the 30th annual Victoria General Hospital neonatal intensive care unit reunion at Jeneece Place, where staff, parents and children reunited with each other under much happier circumstances. “It is an opportunity for families to reconnect … They grow close because they spend a lot of time there,” said

Island Health spokesperson Sarah Plank. “When they are there it is a stressful time and they develop close bonds and it’s (an opportunity) for staff to see how the babies have grown and thrived into healthy children. It is rewarding to see how the babies have grown.” The NICU provides specialized medical and nursing care for children born prematurely or with medical conditions and serves approximately 600 babies each year. More than 18,000 babies have been cared for in the Victoria General Hospital neonatal ICU since it opened 30 years ago.

Some choices are hard.

“It is an important event for staff and families because it gives (staff) a chance to see the positive end of the experience because they have spent this time together in stressful situations,” Plank said. “(Now) they get the chance to get the reward of being together in a nonstressful way.” For more information on the NICU or to donate to the spring campaign for pediatrics and funding for equipment for the program among others, visit victoriahf.ca alim@vicnews.com

Lifelong golfer comes back with first hole-in-one

When Bob Crick aced the second hole at the Juan de Fuca par 3 golf course, neither he nor his playing partner realized at first what had happened. “I thought it had gone by the hole and I couldn’t see it,” Crick said of the Aug. 12 shot. “We couldn’t find the ball, but it was in the cup!” The 73-year-old lifelong golfer never thought he’d get a holein-one with the shot, which was straight over a wide water hazard, his old nemesis, he said, laughing. “I was hoping to make the green!” But clear the water he did, and he sunk the ball for his first ever hole-in-one. He was so excited that he pulled out his cellphone immediately and called both his wife and his longtime golfing

partner in Calgary. “In all my years of golfing, I’ve never seen (a hole-in-one) before. There’s lots of golfers that never see one, let alone get one themselves,” he said. “It’s very, very exciting.” The feat was made all the more impressive by Crick’s recent return to the course. After having surgery to have both knees replaced, he was out of the game for five years. He’d only played a handful of games before last week’s round. Crick, who moved with his wife last November to the Songhees retirement park on the border of View Royal, joked that Juan de Fuca is quickly becoming his favourite course. His advice to other golfers awaiting their first holes-in-one? “Just keep golfing, and hope for the best!” acowan@goldstream gazette.com

Next month Bruce Brown will make his first trip to Port au Prince, Haiti, one of a half dozen intrepid West Shore citizens who have committed time and money to dramatically improve safety and sanitation at the Divine Hands orphanage. Brown, a former staff sergeant with West Shore RCMP, has supported many charities and organizations over the years, including helping his wife raise several thousand dollars for another Haiti orphanage through Strawberry Vale elementary. He figures it’s time for him to get his hands dirty. “Even though I’d been involved with fundraising, I felt I needed to go down there, and be out there, and do it myself,” he says. “Not just give money and not just help out from this side of the world. But go down and help physically. I’m fortunate enough I’m still healthy enough that I can go down and pound nails.” Brown went to New York just days after 9/11 with Langford Fire Chief Bob Beckett and Mayor Stew Young. That was when Brown really got to know the chief, he says. Beckett has been the driving force behind the projects in Haiti, from the first city-sponsored trip to rebuild the Jesus of Prague orphanage after a devastating earthquake in 2010, to the current plan to go down in September. “Bob approached me and asked if I’d be interested in helping out,” Brown says. “I thought it was about time I actually went down.” Rick Fisher of Glenwood Meats in Langford had a similar experience with

Beckett and five other West Shore residents will travel again to Haiti this September to rebuild a second orphanage and improve security and sanitation for more than 50 children. the fire chief and says he couldn’t say no to Beckett. “Bob was, and still is, a regular customer of ours,” Fisher says. “Every time he’d come into the meat market, I’d ask how the project was going and mentioned I’d like to help. And he said, ‘anytime you want to come down.’” Fisher’s first trip was lifechanging, he says. “I had an idea how poor the country was, but when I got down

there, I was shocked.” After a half-dozen trips, Fisher says, the initial shock has worn off, but the drive to help is as strong as ever. “There are still buildings that are a crumbled mess, still people living in shacks, but it’s just amazing what the city of Langford did for those kids living in the orphanage,” he says. “On my first trip I said to Bob, ‘I went down to Haiti

to make a difference,’ but when I came back, I think I changed my life more.” Beckett and Dan Reynolds, a retired building inspector also with the team, travelled to Haiti earlier this year to assess the site. The initial goals for the Divine Hands orphanage project include installing a safety cover for the current well, providing a roof for the outdoor pittoilet, building an outdoor

cookhouse and installing an exterior solar-powered light for security and safety. For Brown, the trip is an opportunity for him to give back in a way that a lot of people aren’t able to. “There are people who want to go, but don’t have the money or the time,”

Booze, boats don’t mix well As temperatures continue to soar on south Vancouver Island, staying cool is important. However, the Canadian Safe Boating Council is reminding all boat owners that drinking and boating is illegal and unwise. According to CSBC, about 40 per cent of all boating-related fatalities are alcoholrelated. The CSBC, along with law enforcement agencies across the country are using this month to remind all boaters, including sailboats, canoes and kayaks to raise awareness about boating and drinking with Operation Dry Water. In the second year of the campaign, Operation Dry Water aims to reduce the number of alcohol-related fatalities on Canadian waterways as well as provide a visible deterrent to drinking and boating. With several gorgeous lakes and miles of ocean to choose from, Island boaters and visitors have plenty of opportunities to cool off without having to resort to alcohol. According to the Criminal Code of Canada, a boater can be charged with impaired operation of a vessel if their blood alcohol concentration exceeds the .08 threshold while operating a vessel. A first offence can see the boater liable for a fine of $600. A second offence carries a 14-day prison sentence and a third offence extends that to 90 days. With the number of vessels plying the waters off the West Shore and within some of our five municipalities it is imperative that all vessel operators be alert to their surroundings. Be dry, be safe.

Trash letter a good vote reminder Re: Park visitors need to have pride in their green spaces (Letters, Aug. 15) The fundamental flaw in Vikram Karkhanis’ urging of people to take pride in Thetis Lake park by not leaving their garbage around is the many jerks who deliberately take advantage of others. They have no interest in “pride” not even in themselves. It’s a form of the entitlement mentality which underlies dangerous driving, robbery, assault and murder. In the park it also illustrates the “tragedy of the commons” phenomenon – when everyone is responsible no one takes responsibility. In today’s society individuals risk false allegations and injury if they point jerks toward proper behaviour or photograph them for police. Thus policing is necessary to re-educate the jerks. That would have the long-term effect of changing the tone in public areas, so weak-minded people won’t have many

negative role models to copy. But voters avoid proper policing and schooling, instead electing officials who spend on glitz, handouts to moochers, interference with honest people building housing, lazy approaches like the cameras

Show&Shine The guttural thrum and growl of muscle cars and classics flexing their engines filled the air at Sunday’s Show & Shine as hundreds wandered down Goldstream avenue admiring the automotive array. Dale Mackie’s 1926 Cadillac limo in particular gathered spectators like bees to honey. Sold new by the Begg Brothers in Victoria, the Cadillac has a colourful history, including working for a 1920’s nightclub in Vancouver, serving as an ambulance in World War II, and being used by the Dunsmuirs. The car is so rare, said Mackie, that after he’d finished restoring it, his appraiser couldn’t find another one to compare it to. Rows of Mustangs, Camaros, old Ford pickups and roadsters lined the street and circled the fountain, and one Volkswagen deluxe bus even made an appearance. The show, in its fourth year, celebrated classic and muscle cars from 1975 and earlier and was a great success.

SPCA teaches kids empathy at summer camp Drew McLachlan News staff

While the BCSPCA is well known for teaching animal care and safety at its youth camps, it’s hoping children will walk away with another important skill this summer – empathy. The group’s Among Animals summer camp program, created last year, runs for a week and is open to ages six and seven.

“That’s the age when we really have to start teaching them about empathy,” said Breeanna McDonald, camp co-ordinator. “They’re interested in animals, a lot of them have pets at home, but they haven’t started thinking about the animals’ point of view.” Along with educational activities like “canine safety tag” and making crafts like cat toys and “dog popsicles,” kids also get to interact with the shelter’s cats and other small animals. They also help with cleaning

rat cages and see what kind of care owning a pet involves. “A part of the program is changing their minds about what kind of pet they want,” McDonald said. “All the kids come in wanting a dog, which of course is a lot of work, but a few have ended up coming back to the shelter and adopting a rat.” The summer camp is partly based on the BCSPCA’s Kindness Counts lesson plan, which also teaches animal empathy in kinder-

garten to Grade 2 classes, but also touches on other educational and safety lessons. McDonald said Among Animals, which runs from July 2 to Aug. 22, has grown this year in terms of popularity, with nearly all spaces being filled by June. “We tend to get kids who already love animals, so we’re reinforcing what they already know,” she said. “But when they leave they teach what they’ve learned to other kids.” reporter@vicnews.com

Great Viking ships sailing towards the shoreline would have been a terrifying sight for the coastal communities of Europe more than a century ago. The fierce Scandinavian warriors of old spread to Iceland, Greenland and even to the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador five hundred years before Columbus. But a new exhibition at the Royal B.C. Museum is proving the lasting legacy of the Old Norse culture goes much deeper than pillaging and horn-rimmed helmets. “People think of the Viking culture as quite primitive, but they were actually very skilled craftsmen to a pedigree of impressive quality,” said Kent Andersson, producer of Vikings: Lives Beyond the Legends, which opened at the museum on Friday. Andersson – visiting from the Swedish History Museum in Stockholm – walks towards an intricate box, about a metre in length, and points out the “almost grotesque” animal heads that decorate its sides like a crown. “It’s a Christian object, but its form is a Viking house made of gilded bronze,” he said. “It belonged to the museum in Hamburg which was bombed during the Second World War, so the orig-

the museum. Many objects have never been seen outside Scandinavia. Hands-on artifacts at the exhibition include a replica Viking sword that illustrates the advanced

metal-working techniques of the ancient Scandinavians, as well as digital boat-building and excavation games. “The blacksmiths were so good making blades, you could actually

bend them over your knee and they’d snap back,” said Andersson, lifting the sword handle to feel the weight. Though the word Viking is commonly used to describe the Old Norse culture, the word actually refers to exploring or adventuring, Andersson said. “You would go on a viking, on a commercial trip or a raid,” he said. “But you weren’t a Viking.” The Norse people dominated vast areas of the North Atlantic for about 350 years beginning in 750 A.D. The resulting archeological finds from this period are a mishmash of cultures from as far away as India, Anderson said. “You can see the influence of other cultures in nearly all of these objects, but they remain unique,” Andersson said. “There are pendants of Thor that contain a Christian cross, it’s quite fascinating.” A small Buddha statue on display proves just how far Viking boats reached on their centuries of journeying, said Royal BC Museum CEO Jack Lohman. “What’s a Buddha doing in a Viking archeological site,” Lohman said at the opening. “It’s an incredible testament to the reach of these explorers.” Vikings: Lives Beyond the Legends runs until Sept. 27 before heading to Montreal and Chicago. dpalmer@vicnews.com

A traffic stop on McCallum road last Thursday led to the successful arrest of a man suspected of being involved with several recent commercial break ins. Shortly before midnight on August 14, a West Shore police officer stopped a 2002 blue Dodge caravan that matched the description of a vehicle that had possibly been involved in a commercial break and enter just days earlier. The vehicle fled from the traffic stop and struck a parked car, after which the driver fled on foot and was pursued by

officers in a foot chase. The man was quickly located a short distance away and taken into custody for possession of break in tools and stolen property. The suspect, confirmed by the West Shore RCMP as William Ronald Crawford of no fixed address, was scheduled to be in court Monday morning (Aug. 18) at the Western Communities courthouse on charges of possession of break in instruments, flight from a peace officer, possession of stolen property under $5000, failing to remain at the scene of an accident and driving an uninsured vehicle or trailer, as well as a number of other charges from Vernon, Winfield and

Kelowna. The 48-year-old also had outstanding warrants from Alberta and Vernon on unrelated charges. The street crime unit and regional crime unit have been able to link Crawford to a number of commercial break ins that have occurred in recent weeks, and investigators are liaising with other police departments in the CRD to determine whether Crawford can be linked to crimes in other areas. Police are seeking the public’s assistance regarding a vicious and unprovoked attack that occurred Sunday morning. At around 9 a.m. on Aug. 17, a Langford woman was cycling at the intersection of Jacklin and Jenkins roads when police

say someone attempted to steal her backpack from behind, hit her in the back of the head and pulled her off her bike. The culprit stole her white Reebok mountain bike. The victim suffered injuries to her face and leg as a result of the attack, and was transported to hospital where she was treated for non-life threatening injuries. Police

say there have been no recent similar attacks. Police are urging anyone who may have seen the incident, or who may be able to assist in identifying the suspect or suspects to come forward. “Jacklin road at 9 a.m. is a well-travelled road, so we’re really hoping someone saw something,” said Cpl. Range of Vision

If you have normal vision, you should be able to see objects clearly whether they are near or far away. When your eye doctor examines your eyes he will measure your vision at long distance as well as close up. The measurement for distance vision is usually taken at 20 feet. A test for near vision is usually taken at the normal reading distance or about 16 inches. Near vision is used for reading, sewing, eating and any other activity in which the object you are looking at is within arms length. Intermediate vision includes computer screens, music on a stand, cards on a table etc. Distance vision is considered anything beyond that point. This would include looking at television or at people across the room, even though the distance is relatively short. You need to see clearly wherever you happen to be looking. Straining your eyes to try to see objects clearly can often cause headaches and other discomfort. If you think you may need glasses or contact lenses or a new lens correction, see your family optometrist for an examination.

West Shore news … through the decades

10 years ago: Ryder Hesjedal is primed and ready for the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens, where he’s racing in the mountain bike category. The Colwood native son won silver at the world championships the year before and is favoured to win a medal at the Olympics. Unfortunately, he suffers a flat tire that takes him out of the running, when he might have won gold. Also making the news in 2004: Pickets go up at national parks around the country, including at Fort Rodd Hill National Historic Site. The job action by the Public Service Alliance of Canada forces some buildings to be closed, and the park begins offering free admission. And, supporters pitch the idea of twinning a conservation centre in Colwood with a proposal by Butterfly World in Brentwood Bay to take animals from the soon-toclose Crystal Garden Colwood. 20 years ago: Queen Elizabeth II, here for the Commonwealth Games, pays a visit to Colwood for the Games’ lawn bowling competition. Her presence causes little stir among the lawn bowling aficionados who were focused on the matches, but was a source of excitement for first-time Queen-viewers. The Queen is the patron of women’s lawn bowls in Great Britain. Also making news in 1994: Faculty and staff at Royal Roads Military College present a 7,500-signature petition to Premier Mike Harcourt, asking that the college be transformed into a civilian university. And, police officers who performed the RCMP’s Musical Ride for the opening ceremonies of the Commonwealth Games bring their precision to the Luxton Fairgrounds for five shows. 30 years ago: More than a dozen seabirds show up dead on the seashore near Esquimalt Lagoon, prompting people to wonder about the cause of death. The carcasses, identified as murres, were analyzed for poison or pollution. Some were found mutilated, but it was not clear whether the damage caused their death or came afterward. Also making news in 1984: Community members rally to support Regina Schaerer, a former Gazette mother of the year; her husband, Fritz and their 11 children. The family may be evicted from their Finlayson Arm Road home after missing two mortgage payments. And, a traffic jam in front of the Metchosin Community Hall is a result of the wild popularity of the Metchosin Farmer’s Market, essentially one fresh-produce stand operated by Jim and Durell Bennett.

A Bulldog start 28 members of the Belmont Bulldog’s football team took to the artificial turf of Goudy Field at City Centre Park, for a challenging training session that had some players huffing, puffing and collapsing into the artificial turf. The program, lead by interim head coach J.C. Boice, who takes over while teacher-coach Alexis Sanschagrin is on strike, opened training camp Monday (Aug. 18) for both its junior and senior teams with students from Grade 8 to 12. Players from Belmont secondary, Spencer and Dunsmuir middle schools and John Stubbs elementary participated in the training sessions in preparation for a season expected to start in September when the football season begins regardless of whether teachers are still on strike or not.

The Victoria Shamrocks have their sights set on Maple Ridge. The Shamrocks finally discovered their opponents in the Western Lacrosse Association finals when the Maple Ridge Burrards secured a spot in the finals, clinching the series with a 10-8 victory to eliminate the Burnaby Lakers in six games. The Victoria side has been patiently awaiting their opponent since Aug. 14 after eliminating the New Westminster Salmonbellies in a four-game sweep.

“There are a few areas we want to address, to look after, but all in all it was a good result,” said Shamrocks head coach Bob Heyes. “A lot of emotional highs and emotional ups and downs... We learned a lot, which is great

Mediator Ready joins BCTF talks Tom Fletcher Black Press

Mediator Vince Ready has met the two sides in B.C.’s festering teacher dispute and agreed to “monitor” the situation. The B.C. Teachers’ Federation and the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association announced Ready’s involvement in a joint statement Thursday, confirming that he met separately with negotiators Wednesday. A media blackout on the talks began last week and will continue. “Mr. Ready agreed to monitor the situation, and to resume exploratory talks or commence full mediation when he believes it will be productive,” the statement says. Talks broke off and a full-scale strike ended the school year in June. B.C. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Kelleher met both sides earlier but declined to attempt mediation, after finding too large a gap between the two sides. Education Minister Peter Fassbender and BCPSEA chief negotiator Peter Cameron have maintained that the BCTF’s

Independent engineering inspections have been ordered for Mount Polley mine near Williams Lake and nearly 100 other mine tailings ponds with permits across the province, with reports to be complete by the end of January. Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett announced the dual reviews Monday. The Mount Polley investigation is to be complete by Jan. 31 and will be done concurrently with the B.C. government’s legally required probes by B.C.’s chief inspector of mines and the environment ministry, which looks at the longer-term effects of the

Bennett said costs will be covered by Imperial Metals for Mount Polley and by all operators of mines with permits to operate nearly 100 tailings facilities in B.C. “Certainly in the last 40 years there’s no evidence of a tailings dam breach in British Columbia, but rare or not, it happened, and so the public’s confidence I think is shaken,” Bennett said at a news conference in Vancouver. “That’s why we need to get these three experts involved as quickly as we’re getting them involved.” The Mount Polley panel includes UBC mine engineering professor Dirk Van Zyl, U.S. consulting engineer Steven Vick, whose earlier

investigations included the 2005 New Orleans levee breach that followed Hurricane Katrina, and Norbert Morgenstern, an Alberta civil engineering professor who has worked on 140 mine projects. Bennett said the panel was chosen with approval of the Williams Lake and Soda Creek Indian Bands, and their report will be made available to the band councils at the same time as government. Independent inspections of other mine tailings ponds must be completed Dec. 1, a change from the March 31 deadline for inspections that are required annually. Bennett said these inspections will each have to be reviewed by an independent geotechnical engineering firm.
