Kabaddi diehards typically describe the sport as a combination of wrestling and rugby. To the eyes of a newcomer, it’s more like a mash-up of the schoolyard game Red Rover and the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Either way, it’s fantastically entertaining and unique (at least in North America), and local fans got an eyeful Sunday afternoon as the Canada World Kabaddi Cup attracted 6,000plus fans to Abbotsford Centre. Suspects different from prior attacks Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
Two women, including one in her 80s, were robbed in Mill Lake Park in Abbotsford on Monday night by two men believed to be carrying handguns. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said the women – one in her 40s and the other in her 80s who uses a walker – began walking around the park at about 7:45 p.m. The women were near the Bevan Avenue parking lot at about 8:50 p.m., preparing to leave, when they were approached by two young men wearing hoodies and bandanas covering the lower portion of their faces. MacDonald said the men pointed what were thought to be handguns at the women and demanded their valuables. He said the thieves got away with a cellphone, a small amount of cash and a fanny pack, and ran toward the intersection of Bevan Avenue and Ware Street. The women, who were shaken, managed to contact police.
The suspects are both described as South Asian males, 17 to 20 years old. One was 5’10” to six feet tall and about 150 pounds. He was wearing a dark hoodie, a dark bandana and white checkered pants. The other was about six feet tall and 160 pounds. He was wearing a light-coloured hoodie and a dark bandana. These suspect descriptions are different from three previous robberies and assaults that have occurred in Mill Lake Park. The first took place on June 9 at about 3 p.m., when a 26-year-old man who was riding his bike was approached by three men and then hit several times, possibly with a skateboard. One of the suspects produced a knife. The second assault was on June 21 at about 5 a.m., when a 39-year-old man, also riding a bike, was attacked by three young men when he refused to give them his bicycle. The third incident was on Aug. 5, when
a 51-year-old man who was sleeping on some grass next to a picnic area awoke to the sound of someone rifling through his belongings. He confronted two young men who were in the process of taking his wallet, cash and other items. One of the culprits struck the victim in the neck during the altercation. The suspects in the three prior assaults were described as Caucasian and in their early 20s. In the first two incidents, the men were described as wearing “skater” type clothing. Also at Mill Lake Park, the body of a 36-year-old woman from Mission was found on July 30 in a forested area of the park at Emerson Street and Bevan Avenue. Her cause of death has not been released, pending results of an autopsy. Police install cameras in neighbourhood Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
Abbotsford Police have installed two security cameras in west Abbotsford where an ongoing conflict between two groups of youths has been based. Const. Ian MacDonald said the cameras were put up on Thursday because, although the conflict had subsided in July, tensions began to rise again in early August. The cameras are located on two different streets which MacDonald said have been identified as the “hot spots” for much of the activity, and more could be installed depending on how the situation progresses. He said neighbours on the two streets are supportive of the measure. “Nobody wants to see anybody get needlessly hurt over a stupid and meaningless dispute.” Police reported on July 7 that there had been more than 25 incidents since May 11 involving a conflict between two groups of South Asian men – ages 15 to 25 – and this had resulted in thousands of dollars

At the time, MacDonald said damage had been done to homes and vehicles, and there was concern the dispute could escalate into serious physical injury. He said the matter, which isn’t related to gangs or drugs, had become a “significant public safety issue.” MacDonald said the matter, which police are referring to as “the Townline Hill dispute,” settled down in July, and the men “seemed to be doing their own thing,” but in recent days
they had begun gathering in groups again. Officers were hearing “more and more antagonistic remarks” from the opposing sides, and they stepped up their enforcement, preventing several potential incidents. “We have done a ton of suppression and interdiction. We have stopped a lot of cars and have had a lot of face-toface conversations with these young men,” MacDonald said. Additionally, leaders in the South Asian community have met with family members and
the young men as an appeal to stop the conflict, he said. MacDonald said the security cameras were installed as additional deterrents. He said this is done only in “exceptional circumstances.” In October 2008, cameras went up along Strathcona Court, where the Bacon family lived at the time. Brothers Jarrod, Jamie and Jonathan – members of the Red Scorpions gang – were the targets of a murder plot at the time. Police said they installed the cameras to protect the neighbourhood and prevent violence. Jonathan was killed in a drive-by shooting in Kelowna in August 2011, and Jarrod is currently serving a 14-year sentence for drug conspiracy. Jamie is in prison awaiting trial in the Surrey Six slayings and for an alleged plot to kill a fellow Red Scorpions gang member. Their parents no longer reside in Abbotsford. Another set of cameras was installed in October 2012 in the 2500 block of Bradner Road in a neighbourhood that had been the site of two drive-by shootings over 20 months.

Terry Fox Run on Sept. 14 The Terry Fox Run is back in Abbotsford this year, and will be held at Tradex on Sunday, Sept. 14. There will be two-, five- and 10-kilometre runs to raise money for cancer research. Registration begins at 9 a.m. while the run begins at 10 a.m. The event returned after it didn’t take place in 2013 because there was no organizer. It had previously happened every year in Abbotsford since 1985. Two local residents, Grant Mottershead and Barbara Bremner, volunteered to take over this year. The 2014 run is the 34th annual. In 1980, with one leg having been amputated due to cancer, Fox embarked on a cross-Canada run to raise money and awareness for cancer research. No major toxicity concerns from spill Tyler OLSEN Abbotsford News
As Matsqui Slough returns to its normal colour, the company behind an iron oxide spill last week says it has taken steps to prevent any future incidents. Last Tuesday, Matsqui Slough turned a rusty red colour, prompting concern from a Harris Road resident. The cause of the discoloration was revealed to have been an iron oxide spill at Abbotsford Concrete, which operates a facility on McCallum Road. Abbotsford Concrete principal Bob Leach, told the News that “the spill was caused by a burst water source spraying water on to one of our bags of red dye.� The dye – composed of red iron oxide, a relatively common earthly compound – then made its way into a storm sewer on McCallum Road. “In our 25-year history in Abbotsford this has never happened. Although we consider this a very isolated incident, we have taken measures to ensure it will not happen again.� An environmental consultant has been hired by the company and water samples have been taken.
While details have not yet been received, the provincial environmental ministry says an early safety review “did not indicate any major toxicity concerns,� as iron oxide is a common component of the earth. The water has since returned to its normal colour and it is being monitored to ensure it meets Health Canada guidelines for drinking water. The province is responsible for assessing and mitigating any environmental effects while enforcement issues are being handled by the federal environment ministry. Mark Johnson, a spokesperson with the federal environment ministry, could say little about his department’s activity in regards to the slough. “We’re at the information-gathering point here,� he said. “From a law-enforcement perspective, it’s not our practice to divulge any information we collect prior to or during any investigation.� Neither ministry could speak to what, if any, effect the incident could have on the slough’s ecosystem. Calls to Fisheries and Oceans Canada were not returned.

The defenders link arms and try to confuse or out-flank the
raider with a series of feints and retreats. On occasion, a defender will initiate contact if he thinks it’s to his advantage, attempting to pin the raider until his allotted time runs out. Kabaddi is a rare sport where the defence draws the most cheers. That’s because the raider, more often than not, makes it safely back across the line. In one instance, a defender shot forward and grabbed the raider’s leg, hoisted him airborne and power-slammed him to the mat, drawing a huge roar from the crowd. Later on, a player delighted the spectators with a standing backflip after derailing a raider with a highlight-reel tackle.

The City of Abbotsford will hold a public information meeting to consult with the public on a proposal to amend the City’s Of¿cial Community Plan (OCP), to designate a portion of the subject property as a Temporary Residential Use Permit Area. Man found dead at Peardonville Road business
The Abbotsford Police Department and the BC Coroners Service are investigating the cause of death of a man whose body was found Saturday morning at a business on Peardonville Road. Const. Ian MacDonald said it will likely take a few weeks for the autopsy results to be completed. An employee who arrived at the business – Tony’s Place Restaurant, located in the 31000 block of Peardonville Road – at about 6:30 a.m. noticed that a side door was damaged and that there was something strange about the interior accordion-style gate.
The woman then found an unresponsive man stuck under the gate, and she called police. Officers who arrived on scene confirmed that the man was dead. He has since been identified as a 33-year-old man not from Abbotsford. Police are not releasing his name nor his residence prior to his death. MacDonald said police believe the incident was likely a break-in, and the man was not in any way connected to the business. A new ‘face’ to this civic election campaign Mark

Other Hand Slate politics at the civic level, a first for Abbotsford, has inevitably arrived in our fair city. And like other municipal parties in cities across the Lower Mainland, it will inevitably fragment. The “party” in Mission, for instance, didn’t last a single term before infighting, differences of opinion and less than compatible personal philosophies caused it to not only fragment, but implode. Diane Watts’ Surrey First party, which ousted the Surrey Electors’ Team, lasted through two elections but has come apart within the last few months as members jockey to replace Watts in the mayor’s chair. Vancouver, of course, saw COPE su-
perseded by Vision, and the NPA shattered by infighting over the past few years. The benefits, if there truly are any, are that financial donors are able to receive tax receipts from their contributions and voters are presented with a party platform that often has a clear and well-articulated direction. Unfortunately, as happened in Mission, the “team members” often disagree on the implementation of their original platform once they are elected. I believe independence is the best way to seek office. Candidates should be elected on their merits and abilities, not be beholden to anyone other than the elector, and particularly not be indebted to the position of those holding power in the backrooms of party politics. I agree, as I am sure most other reasonable people would, with much of what AbbotsfordFirst claims is its platform: a desired location for business and families; model of good government; developing a vibrant economy; respect for citizens and
working together for positive change. The reason virtually everyone supports this is because it is what we, and countless others before us, have always desired in our elected officials and in the operation of our community. For the most part we have achieved this because it’s hard to believe anyone seeking

Often, however, the voter has flummoxed me, re-electing candidates who clearly have not performed as hoped or who have long passed their best before date. However, this is the nature of the game
and, regrettably, the result of voter apathy. Will slate politics change this? Doubtful. Will running on a slate create better politicians? Doubtful. Will, for the first time, Abbotsford voters block vote and elect a slate? Again doubtful. I believe an informed voter will choose the candidates they believe will best serve them, regardless of electoral affiliation. On the other hand, slate politics will bundle campaign costs, allowing its candidates a more cost-effective means to get their message to the people. And in an era when municipal political campaigning is becoming very high cost (the current mayoral race in Abbotsford will prove this to be true), getting the biggest promotional bang for your buck is as important as the message is convincing. If nothing else, perhaps this election campaign – with a combination of contentious mayoral race and slate of councillor candidates – will encourage more people to vote for Abbotsford’s future. markrushton@abbynews.com

Farm consultation a farce, industry benefits Re: Farm changes a great leap forward (B.C. Views, Aug. 15). Tom Fletcher’s opinions are not shared by any farmers I know. The B.C. government’s post-facto “public consultation process� is farcical given that Bill 24, which amends the Agricultural Land Commission Act, was passed this May. An authentic public consultation process should have been multi-year and province-wide, not invitation-only meetings and a one-monthlong token public feedback process which highlight yet again the magnitude of our democratic deficit. Fletcher’s analogy to Mao Tse-tung’s Great Leap Forward is apt, however, given B.C.’s democratic deficit and because Mao’s vision gave rise to China’s Great Famine, resulting in tens of millions of deaths. British Columbians will also pay a high price for the BC Liberal
scheme to drastically change the ALR, as our food insecurity will increase and farm land even more polluted. The “farming� activities proposed by the BC Liberals will reduce the land available to grow food. Alcohol has very limited nutritional value. The BC Liberals’ continued support for industrial agriculture, one of the world’s biggest causes of greenhouse gas emissions, combined with fracking, oil development and anaerobic digesters will further pollute farmland. Manure from organic farms is worth more as fertilizer than as fodder for anaerobic digesters; only conventional farmers would seek to use their contaminated manure to generate power. The BC Liberals need to remember that we all eat, including their buddies in the petroleum and the liquor sectors. Louise Taylor Grand Forks

Its name might sound tough, but the first instalment of the Praetorian Race will be challenging but not frightening, according to the race’s organizer Jason Grafstrom. This Saturday, runners will battle through a five-plus-kilometre course with a variety of obstacles and demands in the first Praetorian Race, the proceeds from which will go to Wounded Warriors Canada and Canuck Place Children’s Hospice. Grafstrom, who has participated in similar races across North America, said he would like to see the race become an annual event. But, just like the race he’s created, Grafstrom will have to get over the first hurdle before tackling the second. And to help get people interested, Grafstrom has created a race he hopes will welcome

FRIEND; Donna Sept. 25, 1945 ~ Aug. 10, 2014
It is with great sadness I announce the passing of my mother. Donna was released from her courageous battle with cancer at Christine Morrison Hospice, with her daughter by her side. She will be deeply missed by her daughter, Michelle Friend, granddaughter Angela Friend, other family members and friends. She spent a good portion of her life living in Abbotsford. Donna worked as a hairdresser where she formed many relationships with her clients. She enjoyed the smiles she got, making her clients look beautiful and handsome. I will miss getting my haircut. She loved to travel to tropical places, read novels and garden on her deck which brought her many hours of gratification and happiness. A celebration of my Mom’s life will be held on Sept. 7, 2014, 3 to 7 pm at Garden Park Towers 2825 Clearbrook Road. As an expression of sympathy, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society under Donna’s name.

Arthur (Arty) David McDermot, 79, entered into rest on August 8, 2014. He had overcome many health conditions in his life and it was a tragic and sudden accident that took him home. He was born in British Columbia April 20, 1935. He resided in British Colombia, Canada most of his life. He joins his parents in heaven and his wife Susan McDermot. He is survived by his daughter Lulu Briggs of Washington, and his two sons Tyler Eddy and David Eddy, Vicky Norman Eddy and their two children Paige and David of California. He was a woodworker for more than 50 years and blessed to work with his hands. He had a beloved woodshop where he spent most of his retirement tinkering and making beautiful creations. He was a very private person, but loved to share his vast knowledge of the Military and could quote history from both the United States and Canada. He loved to write letters and even got on the email band wagon a few years ago, but then decided he liked the personal touch of putting pen to paper so went back to his “old school” ways as he called it. He also loved to sing and play piano. He was a loving Father and Grandpa and a true friend and will be deeply missed by all that knew and loved him. A private ceremony and scattering of his ashes will be held on Orcas Island, Washington where he loved to visit, date to be determined. His dog Rocket who was rescued by Art will forever miss him. In Iieu of flowers a donation may be made in his name to any local animal shelter.

He ripped a line drive between the third baseman and the shortstop to drive in Robert Bradley with the game-winning run. The Angels came sprinting out of the dugout, helmets flying, to mob Marsh. Shortly thereafter, coach Scott Pankratz found himself doused with a Gatorade jug full of water. “It was awesome,” Marsh said. “It was one of the greatest feelings I’ve ever had.” The Angels, the silver medalists at provincials earlier this month, began the six-team Western tourney with a loss to Winnipeg. But they ran the table in their four remaining round-robin games to qualify for the final, highlighted by a complete-game no-hitter from Michael Stovman. In the final, the Angels got terrific pitching from Marsh and reliever Perrin Finley, and a strong performance from their battery-mate, catcher Aiden McDonald. “We really rolled through the tournament after the first game,” Pankratz said. “We set goals at the beginning of the season, and to see them right through to the end is great.”

Brown, Moedt shine as Cascades fall to NCAA’s Titans

It’s hard to read too much into a preseason game with an incomplete roster against a high-quality opponent. But on Sunday afternoon, fans of the University of the Fraser Valley men’s basketball team learned one thing for certain – the Cascades are going to be strong in the paint in 2014-15. Taking on the University of Detroit Mercy Titans, a mid-major NCAA Div. 1 program
just two years removed from a March Madness appearance, the Cascades fell 81-70 but got promising performances from its towering twosome of Nate Brown and Jasper Moedt. Abbotsford fans know Moedt well – the 6’7� fifthyear centre out of Yale Secondary was a second team Canada West all-star last season, and he was reliably terrific against the Titans, posting 11 points, 11 rebounds and four assists.
Brown, though, was a revelation. The newcomer from Fresno, Calif. boasts incredible agility which belies his refrigerator-like 6’6�, 272-pound frame, and he battered the Titans for a game-high 23 points and nine rebounds. “He looks big and strong,� UFV coach Adam Friesen said of Brown, “but he might have the quickest first step on our team. “And his ability to play above the rim surprises
a lot of people.� Friesen had just seven players at his disposal on Sunday – star guard Kevon Parchment is finishing off his summer coursework, Toronto natives Kadeem Willis and Aaron McGowan aren’t on campus yet, and Gurminder Kang had work commitments. Dear Chef Dez: What is the best way to tell when pasta is cooked? ~ Norma L., Maple Ridge, BC Dear Norma: There are many ways that people use to determine that pasta is cooked to perfection - including the old wives’ tale about throwing it against the wall, and if it sticks, it’s done. The best way is to let your mouth do the talking. Carefully remove a strand or piece of pasta from the boiling water. After waiting a few seconds to cool down, take a bite. It should feel ‘el dente’, meaning ‘to the tooth’ in Italian. This relates to the feeling that the pasta should not be overcooked and offer some resistance when biting into it. It should not be hard, but should not be too soft and mushy either. The package of the pasta you purchase will always offer a guideline cooking time, but your bite will always give you the right answer.

Cooking Q Pasta for the Best Results
A staple in almost every home’s pantry is spaghetti or some form of pasta that makes its way to the dinner table on a regular basis. Many of us take the time to focus on building the flavour and complexity of the accompanying sauce for our pasta of choice; however the pasta itself needs attention as well. Many food columns could be dedicated to achieving palate-pleasing goals in pasta sauces, but let us not forget about the substance of these dishes - the pasta noodle. Thus this column will be focused on unraveling some myths and procedures in what seems to be one of the simplest tasks in the kitchen - boiling water and cooking pasta. The first thing to examine is the dry pasta noodle and the transformation that takes place during the cooking process. The most obvious observation is that cooked pasta is larger in volume and flexible, compared to dry raw pasta. What makes this possible is the absorption of water during the boiling process. The cooking process of any food, no matter how simple it seems, needs to be analyzed because this is our chance of infusing flavour into the ingredients being cooked. Everyone has heard of the process of salting water when boiling pasta, but few know or realize the reason why. Some believe it is to help the pasta from sticking or to help keep the water from boiling over; however the reason is to season the pasta and to increase the flavour. Pasta on its own is very bland, and combining bland cooked pasta with a sauce that you have perfected, will be a detriment to your finished dish. If the pasta water is salted liberally then the pas-

ta will be absorbing salt-water, instead of just water, and thus your pasta dish will be seasoned from the inside out. Another no-no is to add oil to your pasta water. This idea probably first came about to prevent the pasta noodles from sticking together, however it will affect your finished dish negatively. Oiled pasta water will help to keep your pasta from sticking together when cooking, but a film of oil will always be left on the drained noodles. This thin film of oil will inhibit the starchiness of the cooked pasta and then in turn lead to the accompanying sauce to not stick to or absorb into the noodles as much. When pasta is eaten you want the starchiness of the pasta to hold onto the sauce as much as possible, so that the dish will be able to be enjoyed to the fullest. That being said, drained cooked pasta should not be oiled for the same reason. A better way to help prevent your pasta noodles from sticking together during the cooking process is to stir the noodles constantly for the first two minutes of cooking time. By that point the water will have returned to its full-boil action and the agitation of the bubbling water will keep the pasta moving and prevent it from sticking. Once the pasta has been drained, do not rinse it. Rinsing will cool the pasta down and also wash away some of the starchiness that we want to help secure the sauce to the noodles. Homemade “spaghetti” is a very common dish in many households, and whether you use spaghetti, linguine, or other types of noodles, I hope these few simple recommendations help to make your meal more enjoyable and flavourful.

he scenery, music, vehicles and businesses have changed, but in six decades, one thing has remained constant for the Siemens family business, Hub Motor Service, located at the corner of Essendene and Gladys Avenues: the wonderful support from Abbotsford residents. At a time when Doris Day’s Secret Love was a hit song, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea with Kirk Douglas was fresh on movie screens, Peter Siemens and his wife Mary purchased an automotive repair shop and gas station from Home Oil in downtown Abbotsford. The building was originally a livery stable and the office was the first Village of Abbotsford office. The de Mause family, the original owners, removed the hay loft and converted the building to an automotive repair shop. With the assistance of Peter’s sons, the “new” business was established and the name Hub Motor Service was decided upon as Abbotsford was referred to as the Hub of the Fraser Valley. Walter Dirks, who is married to Peter and Mary’s eldest daughter, worked as a mechanic at Hub for 40 years. Most of the family’s sons and many of their grandsons and nephews have been employed over the past 60 years. Contributing to that lack of turnover, said Ross, is that “we don’t ask staff to do anything we wouldn’t do.” From 1954 to 1994 Hub Motor Service sold Home Oil and Esso fuels. From 1994 to 2009 they sold Shell fuels. VIKKI HOPES roceeds from the Historic Downtown Abbotsford Car Show will go to Matthew’s House, a facility that provides respite care for children with complex health-care needs. The facility opened in November as part of the Dave Lede Campus of Care on Marshall Road adjacent to Abbotsford Regional Hospital. Matthew’s House was founded by Andrea and Doug Froese, whose son Matthew was born with severe brain damage and had many physical challenges. Matthew was confined to a wheelchair, and the Froeses wanted to provide a place where parents could get a break from the challenges of raising a child with severe disabilities. Matthew’s House became part of the Campus of Care project in early 2010. Sadly, Matthew passed away in August of that year at the age of nine, but his legacy lives on. Up to five children at a time from the ages of four to 18 are cared for in a state-of-the-art

residence staffed by experienced caregivers. They can stay anywhere from two days to two weeks. ’53 Merc started as an ugly duckling Story by
ROD THOMSON “It has a Mercury tailgate.” That’s how the sales and purchase process started on the 1953 Mercury M100 pickup owned by Rod Thomson of Abbotsford. The truck did indeed have a Mercury tailgate, an item which is difficult to find for classic 1953-1956 pickups, however the condition of said tailgate mirrored the rest of the truck. “It was in pretty tough shape” says Thomson’, the fenders all had Bondo in them, the paint was a mess and the interior in tatters. Long time hot-rodder Bert Straiton looked at the truck one day and mentioned he had access to a set of Mercury valve covers to reinforce the style of era. Those valve covers from a late 50s Mercury 390 engine would not fit the 302, however the Mercury portion was cut out and welded into the 302 valve covers. At the same time the air cleaner from a 1958 Lincoln was installed. The engine detail uses the lighter Winveil blue as the primary colour and Sonic blue as the highlight colour, mirroring the colour combination on the exterior. The interior received new tweed fabric on the seats as well as the Mercury logo embroidered into a floor
mat. Vintage Air provides a cool ride and Shark gauges pass along information to the driver. There are a number of subtle features to the Merc including a connecting rod steering wheel brace, hidden gas filler, hidden trailer hitch, remote door openers, power windows and a remote kill switch to disable the truck and prevent theft. “The truck turned out just as I envisioned it, true to the era but with subtle modifications and a clean look from bumper to bumper,” says Thomson. While the Mercury tailgate might have been the selling feature, this smooth 1953 Mercury M100 has much more to offer today. After 13,000 miles the Merc maintains its classic style and stance.
