Suspects released in firearms case Morning Star Staff

Four suspects arrested Tuesday in a shots fired incident at Polson Park have been released from custody without charges being laid. Police received a number of calls from witnesses at around 8 a.m. Tuesday about shots being fired in Polson Park. A 23-year-old Vernon man was arrested near the park Tuesday morning while three other suspects – two men, one from Vernon, the other from Surrey, and a 28-yearold Toronto woman – were arrested shortly before noon Tuesday without

incident in a car in Kelowna. “Members of the serious crimes unit are continuing to interview witnesses, and collect evidence in relation to this case,” said Vernon RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk. “The potential for charges being laid in the future against these individuals, or any others involved in this incident, will be reassessed in the days to come as they advance this investigation.” Police said Tuesday that the four individuals were known to each other. Nobody was injured in the incident.

Revelstoke RCMP arrested a Vernon woman after a five-hour pursuit that included a police officer getting peppered by bear spray early Wednesday morning. RCMP say the incident began at around 3 a.m when they got a call about a suspicious female who had parked her vehicle in someone’s driveway and was asking for gas or money. Police attended but when they approached the woman she fled in a blue Toyota Tacoma pickup. The vehicle was later seen on the TransCanada Highway and a traffic stop was attempted by police. The woman refused to comply with the stop and at some point the police officer was hit with bear spray. The woman then fled the scene but her truck was soon found only one kilometre further east on the highway. The truck had been reported stolen from a home in Sorrento sometime overnight and was related to another motor vehicle theft in Vernon. An RCMP police dog was called in from Vernon and by 8 a.m. the woman was found and arrested. The 31-year-old woman is facing charges of obstructing a police officer, resisting arrest, assaulting a police officer, possession of stolen property worth more than $5,000, trespassing and breaching a probation order.

Coldstream Lumber is hoping to be back up and running in full force by Monday despite a major electrical fire destroying its kilns Tuesday. “We’ll be able to have all the guys back,” said Tannis Wilson, assistant mill manager. Investigations into the fire revealed that there was a catastrophic failure of fuse boxes which led to electrical arcing. “We’ve had it confirmed through lab tests,” said Coldstream Fire Chief Shane Code. Now that the investigation has wrapped up, the mill is just waiting for BC Hydro to replace the transformer which blew and get power back into the site, Some employees have already been back since the fire, cleaning up the mess. The blaze, which broke out Tuesday morning, completely destroyed the two kilns and melted the front of the planer shed. But since the kilns aren’t used very often in the summer, Wilson says the wood can dry outside for now. It’s in a month or two when the mill will really need the kilns. Damage is estimated at “hundreds of thousands of dollars,” said Code. The employee who was taken to Vernon Jubilee Hospital with smoke inhalation is also on the mend. “He was released yesterday and he’s home,” said Wilson. “All six fire departments did an amazing job,” adds Wilson. Coldstream Fire Department was backed up by Lavington, Lumby and BX crews initially and later called in Armstrong and Vernon for further assistance.

Injury avoided in bus accident at busy beach parking lot Morning Star Staff

Nobody was injured in a freak accident at one of the North Okanagan’s busiest locations. A 35-year-old woman from Saskatchewan was driving a small school bus with her six children in the parking lot at Kal Beach shortly after 2:30 p.m. Wednesday when the bus stalled, then lost all of its brakes, including the emergency brake, and began to roll backwards. News Police conduct high-risk takedown of car entering Vernon northbound well in excess of the posted 90 km/hour speed limit, obtaining a speed reading on radar of 142 km/hour for the vehicle,” said Vernon RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk. The traffic officer, assisted by several additional members, conducted a high-risk traffic stop with the vehicle on 15th Avenue at 32nd Street, the entrance to the Vernon Army Camp. Officers had their guns drawn as three occupants were removed from vehicle by verbal commands, then they were all told to take a prone position on the ground. “They were handcuffed while officers continued the investigation,” said Molendyk.

There were some tense moments near the Vernon Army Camp Monday as Vernon RCMP officers helped Lake Country counterparts deal with reports of impaired individuals in a vehicle with a handgun. The incident began after Vernon RCMP received a heads-up from its dispatch centre at about 7:30 p.m. to be on the lookout for a blue Ford Taurus leaving Lake Country, near Woody’s Pub, with a male passenger associated to the vehicle reportedly seen with a handgun in the car, and the occupants were believed to be impaired. “One of our traffic officers located the vehicle on Highway 97 near Birnie Road,

The driver, a 46-year-old Lake Country man, was determined to be the vehicle owner. He was arrested for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and was also determined to be under the influence after failing a roadside screening test. A pellet pistol was recovered from the car and seized. The driver was issued 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition (IRP), which carries a 30-day vehicle impound. He also received a seven-day vehicle impound for the excessive speed violation, a defective window on the vehicle and the car was ordered to be inspected. All of the people in the car were released roadside.

Excessive speed still an issue on local highway Morning Star Staff

People continue to be in a big hurry on North Okanagan highways. The RCMP’s North Okanagan Traffic Services and Central Okanagan Traffic Services (Kelowna) worked in a combined effort over the weekend to deal with the summer traffic issues on Highway 97 between Vernon and Lake Country. “Our officers worked two stationary Lazer operations that were conducted on Highway 97 by Rawthorne Road,”

said Vernon-North Okanagan RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk. In total, 127 tickets were written, over the weekend. Speed was up again with five people being charged for excessive speeding; speeds of Gord Molendyk 47, 54, 49, 56, and 48 km over the posted speed limit were

observed. One vehicle was stopped for speeding on Sunday doing 120 km in a 90-zone. On closer check, the out-of-province driver blew a ‘Warn,’ and was given a three-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition as well as the speeding ticket. A total of 14 tickets were issued for no seatbelts, there was one open liquor in the vehicle ticket, four no valid driver’s license, and two tickets were issued as the motorists had no insurance.

One vehicle owner learned the hard way about letting someone drive a vehicle without a valid driver’s license. “The 35-year-old male was operating a woman’s car when he was stopped,” said Molendyk. “It turned out he was an unlicensed driver, and the Motor Vehicle Branch imposed a seven-day impound on the vehicle he was driving. “The end result is the owner of the car is now without the vehicle for seven days.”

A Coldstream cyclist suffered injuries after being struck by a car in Vernon Wednesday afternoon. Emergency Health Services personnel requested Vernon RCMP attend an accident between a cyclist and a 2012 blue Hyundai Sonata at 4:30 p.m. on Highway 6 at Pottery Road. “Our officers attended and spoke with the driver and an independent witness,” said Vernon RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk. “The car was travelling eastbound on Highway 6 and wanting to turn left onto Pottery Road. “The driver of the car failed to yield to the cyclist, who was travelling westbound on his Carbon Fiber triathlon bicycle.” The cyclist was transported to Vernon Jubilee Hospital for further examination of the deep bruises, minor cuts and road rashes on his legs, arms, knuckles and hands suffered in the collision. There was approximately $500 damage to the Hyundai, and an estimated $5,000 in damage to the bike. The driver of the Hyundai, a 73-year-old Vernon woman, was issued a ticket for failing to yield on a left turn.

Back to school?

t’s hard to imagine, but there are just over two short weeks left of summer. At least that’s what many B.C. parents, and students, are hoping for. While summer is full of sun and fun, the start of school is an important part in every child’s life (and a muchneeded break for parents and grandparents). But if the B.C. Teachers Federation and the government can’t get their act together, summer vacation just might be extended. Surely there are Jennifer Smith some kids thrilled at the thought, and there are some parents who are looking forward to the extra $40 per child per day that the government says we will get if school doesn’t start Sept. 2. But there are a whole bunch of us who are downright sick of this and no amount of money can compare to a child’s education. The two sides need to put all reservations aside and come to some sort of agreement. Because as we all know, education is a vital part of a child’s life, in so many ways. I, for one, say give the teachers a raise and give them the resources they need, because our children are relying on it. But I also understand that there are only so many dollars to give. So if the government can be open and honest and give the highest number it can afford without having to cut any other vital services, then the teachers need to accept that. This has gone on far too long and disrupted too many lives to continue any further. How can students, and parents, and all others affected, be expected to continue to be victim to this strike any longer? If the teachers do not go back to work, I don’t see how the community is supposed to cope with all these additional kids out of school. The summer is one thing, there are camps

and grandparents which help essentially babysit kids while parents are at work. But come September, the pool of camps dry up (especially the all-day ones that working parents need). Therefore we, and that includes teachers and politicians, are all waiting anxiously to find out if school will start on schedule. According to the B.C. Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils, if no deal is reached by Monday, Aug. 25, then school will not start on time. CBC reports president Nicole Makohoniuk saying: “The way I look at it, if there’s not a resolution in the next two weeks, school will not begin in the beginning of September because principals and teachers will not have had a chance to build those class lists and work together and even get prepared to teach.” And she’s right, but if Aug. 25 rolls around and there is still no resolution, then the rest of us are left scrambling. There will be a mad rush to get kids enrolled in any day programs that might be offered or gain the assistance of grandparents, friends and neighbours. It’s a scary thought for most of us who aren’t sure if we should be shopping for school supplies or saving up for a full-time babysitter. And with a little one who is about to enter her very first year of school, this is ruining what should be an exciting moment in my and my child’s life. She won’t ever get those lost days of school back, they are priceless (and indeed worth more than $40). And what about all the kids who have already lost days due to the strike (whether this year’s or ones in the past)? I’m not sure what the average teacher in B.C. makes, but I’m sure it’s not nearly enough considering the fact that they are shaping the minds of our future. I believe the job they do is priceless and would happily pay more taxes towards education. Then again, we all deserve more, but often we must see the bigger picture and settle for less.

Vernon councillor Mary-Jo O’Keefe is right: the city has a lot of unique and interesting licenced alcohol vendors with equally unique and fascinating products. And with a new policy now in place that will allow licensed liquor vendors to sell and sample their products at farmers’ markets in city limits, those vendors will get more exposure and opportunity to showcase their wares. The city’s policy is in compliance with all applicable regulations and policies of the province’s Liquor Control and Licensing Branch, but applies only to the Vernon Farmers’ Market, held Monday and Thursday at Kal Tire Place parking lot, and the Avenue Market Friday afternoon on 30th Avenue. The vendors must be licensed – which means if you do home brew you’re not eligible – and each market is responsible for who they allow to sell and sample products. The markets will police the liquor vendors according to LCLB criteria. The city has also thrown its support behind an application to the LCLB by the Vernon Performing Arts Centre to expand its current liquor license. Presently, people attending a play or concert at the centre can only enjoy a drink before the show or during an intermission. If the LCLB approves the performing art centre’s application, you’ll be able to enjoy a drink at your seat while watching a play or concert. Of course, you would still have to be responsible – as you would when sampling or buying products at the farmers’ markets – but enjoying a drink during a performance is better than racing the crowd out to the foyer to avoid a lineup, then swigging down your drink to get back to your seat. Cheers to the city for the support on both counts.

I know there are many different ways to start a fire but the one that is easiest to avoid is discarded cigarettes. I still see people flicking their cigarettes out of their cars and into the very dry ditches and road shoulders. Many of the previous fires in this area and the current ones have started at the sides of roads and highways and many have been proven to be discarded cigarettes. I see the articles but nobody in the press seems to be raising the alarm that smokers must refrain from flicking their butts at all costs. I am not against smoking but keep it in your car if you choose to smoke in your car. One discarded cigarette can put many peoples lives and property at risk. I encourage anyone that sees a careless smoker discard their potential forest fire out of their car to report their license number to the RCMP. If you choose to smoke it's your

Conservation requires leadership

s this a trick or a joke that The Morning Star recently had on the front page “Saving Water – Local Politicians urge residents to reduce consumption” and then page A5 says “.... more usage than sustainable....” What am I missing here? Last year when my family along with many others conserved as much water as possible your water revenues went down and you our leaders raised our water rates 25 per cent. Then you tell us that we need to vote on borrowing $70 million to upgrade our water systems after borrowing millions for the Duteau source upgrades. Don’t tell me anymore what I and the public need to do – show us through leadership what you are doing besides asking for more money when all that seems to be happening is unreasonable debt loads placed on our cities, towns and province. What are you our elected officials doing about conserving water – have you turned off the rooftop fountain across from the courthouse? Have you quit watering rarely used fields now that their usage is down? Have you considered making your conservation tier levels on billing fair and achievable for those of us on meters – upping to tier two after only 10 cubic meters is that real or attainable?

decision, just don't make the rest of us pay for it. lorne pearson silent no longer As a retired teacher I have been sitting back watching the current impasse, not with detachment, but with an intent to remain quiet. However as time passes my resistance has crumbled and after a recent letter ("Teacher Dispute") I am responding. There are several large issues that always come up, and the one that is manipulated publicly, especially by the government and its cronies, is the issue of money. All politicians and corporate executives operate on a double standard. They will argue that ‘you need to pay the best in order to have the best workers’, while at the same time the average wage earner is denied ‘the best’ pay (wages in general have been flat over the past three decades, while corporate/political salaries have risen almost exponentially). As for teachers, while platitudes are bandied about concerning their value to society ("we appreciate their work"), they are certainly not offered the best in

comparison to politicians and corporate executives whose contributions to society’s health are arguable at best. Which leads to another fallacy used in many arguments. Teachers are not wage earners, but are salaried employees, yet most people antagonistic to teachers argue on a wage-scale basis. Certainly if averaged over a 25 contact hour work week, the pro-rated hourly wage seems pretty good (although much less than many wage labour positions in the tar sands). As a salaried employee teachers work more than double their contract hours if all aspects of their professional employment are considered: time for report cards, marking, staff and committee meetings, coaching (sports or music or technology) and refereeing, summer upgrade courses, family meetings, social work meetings and on. It leads to the old cliche that teachers would be better off paid as baby-sitters, as then all the professional level activities could be dropped and the hourly rate would increase significantly. But that too is a specious argument as teachers are much more than baby-sit-

How can I be so different from the average Canadian family when my backyard is all dead and full of thistles? While water is not a renewable resource I fully support conservation and sustainability. But what I do not support and what is also not sustainable is the debt our elected and non–elected officials locally and provincially are borrowing on our behalf. While you all continue to raise our debt load, water rates, utility rates, taxes etc., you seek higher wages for your great efforts. Most people's wallets and bank accounts are comparable to a non-renewable resource and around here I am thinking this resource should be considered more often by our elected officials. Unrealistic debt, unrealistic taxes, unrealistic utility fees are not a legacy I wish to leave behind to our children and grandchildren. Lead from the top as you have been elected or appointed to do – don’t expect more wages for more debt, quit watering all of our parks (and rooftops), quit asking for more money – politicians you need to be part of the solution through leadership. Generally I enjoyed my teaching career and the rewards and opportunities it offered on a personal educational level with the students. One of its worst aspects was/ is the publicly flouted double standard of paying teachers with pleasant platitudes and homilies ("we appreciate their work"), but not wanting to pay them a salary that derives from their high

level of service in and beyond the classroom, and their years of (and ongoing) personal education. Jim Miles

Breaking Bread program delivers the goods Morning Star Staff

Breaking bread, making friends and connecting community. These represent the three key goals of the Whitevalley Community Resource Centre’s Breaking Bread program, an initiative that has served more than 300 seniors in Lumby since 2011. Recognizing the significance of dining together, the Breaking Bread program encourages seniors to socialize with each other while enjoying nutritious food. In recognition of the important work that the Whitevalley Community Resource Centre does for the community of Lumby, Valley First Credit Union provided the organization with a $4,650 community endowment grant for a third consecutive year. Notably, in 2013, the program supported more than 150 community members. “The experience of eating together builds peer connections, increases social supports, and provides opportunities for people to learn from each other and practise healthy behaviours and interactions,” says Gay Jewitt, executive director of Whitevalley Community Resource Centre. “Breaking Bread projects help to bring together individuals who might not otherwise have connected, and encourages participants to keep active and take part in new activities.” Said Seline Kutan, executive director of the First West Foundation which administers the endowment: “We’re thrilled to be able to support the Breaking Bread project again this year. Organizations like Whitevalley are inspiring examples of how we can make life better for individuals in our communities, and our foundation is very proud to be able to continue to do our part in improving the quality of life of thousands of British Columbians.” The Breaking Bread program encompasses five project components designed to encourage healthy eating and community connections among seniors, one

of the most vulnerable community groups. The senior breakfast project offers food security and socialization

two days a week, and the senior wellness project encourages participants to live well through wellness workshops.

The men’s cooking class provides hands-on healthy eating education in a fun and community environment, and the

seniors intergenerational program supports interaction between seniors and children, providing positive benefits to both

groups of people. Finally, the weekly walking group encourages exercise and good health in a group envi-

ronment. Each year, the program continues to grow, promoting togetherness in the Lumby community.

Joe and Martha Ryll wanted to give back to Vernon Jubilee Hospital. The couple recently donated $10,000 to the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation to acknowledge the years of care they have received at the hsopital. “I think the hospital is the best thing we ever had,” said Joe, who has diabetes. “Staff treated my wife, my mom and me very well.” The donation will support the ambulatory care department. “It is not just about good care, but with many of us aging and so many new treatments, we wanted to do our part and give a bit to help purchase new equipment. Every little bit helps,” said Martha.

Smoke advisory lifted Morning Star Staff

The ministry of environment, on Wednesday, ended the smoky skies advisory that was issued last week for the entire Okanagan, Shuswap, Thompson, Fraser Canyon, Similkameen, Nicola and Boundary regions. The weather system moving through the southern Interior resulted in an improvement in air quality and a decrease in the amount of smoke carried into the region. These conditions are expected to continue through the weekend.

Langley Rivermen forward Justin Szeto has earned an NCAA Division I scholarship to Harvard University. Szeto, 17, of Vancouver, committed to the Rivermen this spring after a spectacular season with the BC Major Midget League’s Vancouver North West Giants where he finished third in league scoring with 77 points. Excelling both on and off the ice, Szeto is a gifted athlete and student. “I’m super excited, it came together pretty quickly this past weekend and I couldn’t be happier with how things have materialized,” said Szeto.

Shiplo, 19, of Oakville, Ont., garnered 1-6-7 with the Lincoln Stars of the U.S. League last season. A left shot, he had 3-7-10 with the Des Moines Buccaneers of the USHL two years ago. “I watched video of him and he’s a guy who can come in and run the powerplay,” said Williamson. “He’s a good puck mover.” Williamson said Statchuk requested a move closer to his hometown of Wadena, Sask.

PENTICTON – The Penticton Vees have landed former Vernon Viper forward Demico Hannoun. The North Delta product was picked up in a deal from the Surrey Eagles in exchange for the Canadian Junior Hockey League playing rights of defenceman Alex Coulombe and future considerations, the Vees announced Wednesday. Vernon earlier sent Hannoun to the Eagles to close a January deal for Surrey captain Brett Mulcahy. “Demico is a player who we are very familiar with, and I look forward to work-

ing with him so can he achieve his maximum potential,” said Vees’ head coach/ GM Fred Harbinson. Hannoun is excited to join the Vees after asking for a trade two weeks ago when he learned that former Vancouver Canuck Peter Schaefer wouldn’t be coaching Surrey. Hannoun is now looking forward to learning under Harbinson. “Fred is probably one of the best coaches in our league,” said Hannoun. “I’m excited for him to help me develop, become a better player.” Hannoun, committed to Michigan Tech for the 2015-16 season, can help the Vees in the offensive department.

In 138 BCHL regular-season games, he has 41 goals and 103 points. He has also produced at a near point-per-game clip in the last two playoff seasons, amassing eight goals and 26 points in 44 games. Hannoun has played in two RBC Cups: with the Eagles two years ago and last season with the host Vipers. Hannoun also represented Canada as a member of Team Canada West at the 2013 World Junior A Challenge in Nova Scotia. A cousin of Winnipeg Jets’ prospect Nic Petan, Hannoun should feel comfortable in the Vees’ dressing room early as he knows Steen Cooper, Dante Fabbro and co-captain Cody DePourcq.

It was a sister act of deja vu at Spallumcheen Golf and Country Club on a hot afternoon as Linda Matile recorded her first hole-in-one on No. 7. The strangest part about this ace was that it happened to her sister, Jessica Bitar, who got a hole-inone nearly four years to the day, on the same hole. “Hers was on July 26,” said Matile, who shot her own ace 1,461 days later, on July 27. The two were golfing together back then, but Bitar missed this one because she lives in Texas. Using her seven iron, Matile said her tee shot bounced near the sand before she lost sight of it. “I didn’t even see it go in, but my husband did. He wanted to be the first one to see it,” said Matile. Matile can’t even recall what she shot over nine holes but will always remember the seventh hole. “It felt pretty good. I’ve never got one before. I’m not a huge golfer, I have only been out about five times this summer,” said Matile.

Bridge by Phillip Alder TAPPING THE DUMMY MIGHT STRAND A SUIT Mitch Hedberg, a stand-up comedian who died in 2005, said, “I would imagine that if you could understand Morse code, a tap dancer would drive you crazy.” In a few bridge deals, the defenders can lead declarer through a merry dance by tapping him -leading side-suit winners to make declarer ruff in one hand or the other. This is usually done either to make declarer lose trump control, or to strand a long suit so that declarer cannot establish and run it. This deal occurred during a social game and the auction is given as it happened. After the first round, I think South should have made a negative double to show his

heart suit, not responded one no-trump without a sure spade stopper. North did not know what to do over two spades. Not expecting his partner to have four hearts, North wondered about three no-trump and five clubs. So he cue-bid three spades to ask South if he really could control spades. Now South tried four hearts, which North, reading correctly, passed. Yes, perhaps he should have chosen five clubs, an easy contract to make. Against four hearts, West led an imaginative spade king. South ruffed in the dummy and should have immediately played on clubs. But before leading the club king, he drew two rounds of trumps, leaving the ace on the board.

East erred by winning with his club ace. Yes, ducking risks South’s having only a singleton, but declarer would surely have played a club at trick two in that situation. If East had taken the second club and led another spade to tap the dummy, the contract would have gone down in flames.

A potential residential development that would feature close to 80 units and a new road access to Highway 97 close to Lodge Road in Lake Country is once again back before Lake Country council. Council gave first reading to a rezoning application that would create single family dwellings as well as multi family row housing in a 26 acre parcel of land on the west side of Highway 97 near Lodge Road. It’s the second time the proposal has come before Lake Country councilors. A similar application was before council in 2011 but expired in 2013 due to complications with the Ministry of Highways approval process. At issue is a road right of way that currently runs

Approval would be needed from the Ministry of Highways as well as Ministry of Infrastructure if the proposal gets the approval at Lake Country as it would create a new intersection onto the highway. Coun. Penny Gambell said her concern with the current proposal is for the amount of single family homes proposed in the area, which is close to the Lake Country Main Street. “Because this is so close to downtown it concerns me we would rezone to a low density (single family) so close to the town centre,” said Gambell. “I thought the push was to have higher densities closer to the town centre.” Lake Country planner Mark Koch said the developer is open to creating more higher density units on the site as the project moves forward. “The desire is to maximize density in sites like this,” said Koch. “There could be a willingness by the developer to designate a portion to fit with that.” Council passed first reading and also called for a traffic impact study to be completed before the proposal comes back for second reading of the bylaw.

Three North Okanagan scouts were among the honoured for achieving their Pathfinder Scout level at the annual Thompson Okanagan Chief Scout Award ceremony in Sicamous. Jenna Westoby and David Tordoff of the 1st Armstrong scouting group, and Peter Hirschkorn of 1st Coldstream, were among the 15 recipients who were joined at the ceremony by 60 parents, families and scouters from the North and Central Okanagan, along with Kamloops. These young men and women have worked very hard to achieve Scouts Canada’s highest award for the Scout section (11-14 years of age, may be extended to age 16). These scouts have exemplified scouting’s principles through leadership, voluntary service to the community and outdoor skills. A recipient of the Chief Scout’s Award has demonstrated the personal desire to reach a little farther, to work a little harder and to put even more back into the community. The ministry of education also recognizes their hard work, learning and time required in achieving the Chief Scout’s Award and awards four high school credits towards their high school graduation.

know I’m not alone. It seems obvious that the subtle, yet in-your-face advertising is having an impact on all of us. It is insidious in its subliminal message methods. The message? We have to look young …..not old, it’s apparently best to look younger than we are and we have to be thin - not even average, thin is where it is at with advertisers. They seem to be fixated on it and as a result, we start to focus on it too. You can notice how we have been impacted…..by comments such as “Oh – you don’t look like you are 60….. you look 50!!” (50 is the new Carole Fawcett 60 you know! ) It implies that there is something wrong with getting older. It is a continuation of the obsession with youth. For proof, just look at the popularity of plastic surgeons, medical estheticians and even dentists who have jumped on board with botox injections, face fillers, etc. ka-ching! Here come the boomers who are being bombarded with it-is-not-okay-to-look-your-age messages by advertisers and subsequently are having a difficult time with aging. The other current trend is to exclaim “Oh – have you lost weight?” (you can become thinner from chemo treatments) Thin people are dieting to become thinner. The current one is called ‘the paleo diet’ which, like cavemen before us, encourages people to eat meat, fish, nuts, leafy greens, veggies and seeds. Hmmmm…….sound familiar? The impact is that it encourages us to focus on the wrong things with the spin-off being low self

worth, breeding a lot of unhappiness in a quest to achieve what is unattainable. Personally speaking, I consider becoming older to be infinitely better than the alternative. However, if one more person refers to me as “dear”, dearie”, or (OMG) “sweet-pea” – that was a new one the other day - I might act like the child I am being spoken to as, and throw a temper tantrum. Think about the last time you were called “dear, dearie, sweety, or (double cringe) sweet pea” – I’ll bet it was when you were a child. Mature men and women who have survived what life has tossed at them are most definitely not your ‘dearie’ or any other term of endearment. They are life survivors who deserve respect. Why is it that people think that speaking to anyone as though they are children is respectful or kind. It isn’t. (I understand regional terminology – like the east coast, or the English “love”), etc. That’s different, much like your friend or parent calling you ‘dear’. Nobody likes to be patronized or condescended to. I read James Seaton’s letter to the editor (Sunday, June 29th) with his reference to being referred to as the royal “we”. (great letter James – “we” agree!) So, the moral of this column is, be mindful of the unrealistic air-brushed images the advertisers want you believe are true; speak to everyone with respect, dropping the terms of endearment, find the humour in all situations in your life and remember sweet pea, there’s more to you than what you look like. Polley mine spill tests turn to long-term effects News

Samples of fish and sediment in the region of the Mount Polley mine tailings breach are being tested to determine longerterm effects of metals contamination on the local environment. The B.C. environment ministry has also collected rainbow trout and lake trout tissue samples, with results expected by the end of August. through the system and was diluted greatly by the water in the lake, the Quesnel River and ultimately the Fraser River,” the environment ministry said in a statement. “As such, the fish exposure was limited and not long enough for uptake into tissues. Combined with the fact that the water in Quesnel Lake meets drinking water guidelines, it is unlikely there will have been any short-term effects on fish in Quesnel Lake or downstream as a result of this event.” Tourism operators remain open on Quesnel Lake and throughout the Cariboo region. Polley mine tailings breach after health authority water tests confirmed the water is not a risk for drinking or bathing. Interior Health lifted the water use ban on all areas except immediate zone of the tailings and water spill, including Hazeltine Creek, Polley Lake and 100 metres around the out of the creek at Quesnel Lake. The tests corroborate earlier samples tested by mine operator Imperial Metals. The only sample that yielded metal contamination was one taken from an area with visible sediment near Hazeltine Creek, which was scoured out by millions of cubic metres of water and mine tailings.

Getting to know: Dayton Ricketts Aniko Forgo Special to The Morning Star

Editor’s note: Kalamalka secondary school graduate Aniko Forgo returns with her Q&As with local artists/musicians. This week, The Morning Star presents her interview with Dayton Ricketts, a 23year-old singer/songwriter from Lumby. He had the experience of participating in the ACUVUE 1-Day Contest in 2012. Q: How has growing up in a small town influenced you and your music? A: “Relationships in a small town are much more defined. You become incredibly close with everyone’s mom, grandma or little brother. Lumby is an extremely tight-knit community. Everyone knows everything about you, all your flaws all your strengths, but I like it that way because it’s motivated me to be a better person every day. When you can’t hide or run away and start over, it pushes you to have strong genuine morals and even though people make mistakes in life, a small town has its ways of picking the weeds out of your relationships through experience. A genuine person will not throw away the relationships that are a lifetime in the making so the relationships that matter grow stronger as others fall away, teaching you good life lessons about trust and respect. I take pride in developing those relationships even in times of struggle where others may run. Because of the strong core I have constructed over the years with my relationships I am able to do music and be creative and not be afraid to step outside of my comfort zone because I have the support. Growing up in a small town is not just influencing me, it’s creating me.” Q: Can you tell us about your experience doing the ACUVUE 1-Day Contest? Who did you work with? A: “Wow, I worked with many amazing people! There were producers, engineers and choreographers that have all worked with crazy names! I got to kind of get a crash course from each one of them about what it takes. I got to go to the Teen Choice Awards and walk the red carpet for the first time with all the big names brushing shoulders with me. It was insane! "ACUVUE is still helping me accomplish my one-day dream to be a successful music and video artist. They have me down to L.A. on a regular basis to experience new things and do interviews, etc. It’s unreal! I recently got to go on stage in front of 28,000 people at a Demi Lovato concert in Nashville. I talked about my experience and how everyone should enter the ACUVUE 1-Day Contest to

A: “Over the past two years I have teamed up with my aunt to create an organization from the ground up called Give A Shirt. I volunteered my time and skill to construct a website for the organization to increase awareness and make donations easier. Last year the organization filled a 20-foot shipping container with used clothing and has raised almost $20,000 to go towards clean running water, shelter and nutritious food for the kids in Deak Kum Pa orphanage in Laos. Q: How was it recording your song Do it for the love? Do you have any new music out? A: “Do it for the love is my most recent project. I got to work with a great group of local dancers for the video from Silhouette Dance Studio in Vernon. I recorded the song with a friend of mine, Steven Bunter, and a local guy named Brody Jones helped me film the video for it. It was great! There are some super talented people in our valley. All my new music can be found on VEVO.com and on iTunes. Just search Dayton Ricketts and you will find me.” Q: What can we expect from you this year? A: “I plan to release a few new songs this year so follow and subscribe to all my social networks to get the latest. I want to get on the radio with a good solid dance track and put out at least one unreal video this sum-

mer. I have some cool stuff planned but you will have to wait and see.” Q: What has been the coolest experience you’ve had so far? A: “I have been fortunate enough to travel many places in the world so far at my young age. I love traveling to different places and experiencing different cultures. Coolest experience I have under my belt so far would be my most recent trip to Laos with Give a shirt. It really puts life into perspective when you visit a place with such poverty. Yet it’s also refreshing because you learn that many of our problems here in Canada are in fact not problems at all. the target audience isn’t going to notice. HOWE: That’s the best thing about it. If you’ve got kids that are too young for Batman, Avengers or Xmen, then TMNT is a good place to get them started on comic book superhero movies. You won’t see anybody getting shot, stabbed or beaten to a pulp, instead they seem to taser them. I don’t know if that’s a plus or not. The language is easy to understand and there’s no convoluted storyline for kids to work out. TAYLOR: Agreed, it’s not complicated, it’s just pointless. The film is frantic, flashy and most of the camera work is hand-held, which makes for a jittery viewing experience, something that works well when you are Saving Private Ryan on the beaches of Normandy, but not

Fluff news reporter April O’Neil (Megan Fox) wants to do serious stories and gets her chance when she witnesses masked vigilantes foil a Foot Clan robbery. But will anyone believe her tales of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? We say, “Kids aren’t going to mind that this is a terrible movie.” HOWE: Luckily for me I was just past the age mark that I didn’t have to witness the original TMNT back in 1990, unlucky for me I had to sit through the reboot. Why couldn’t it come to the Galaxy theatre a week later, that way I would have missed it due to being away camping? The only good thing about it compared to other comic book movies is that it’s only an hour 30 long, but saying that, I’m not going to get that time back. TAYLOR: I worked at the Towne Theater in 1990, so I saw the original many, many times. It was a superior movie. This film is poorly written, acted and filmed. I jotted down a couple of my favourite bad lines: Head baddy Shredder, (think of a Samurai in a robot suit) says near the beginning of the film, “No one will stop us in our plan to retain victory.” Secondary baddy Sacks, (William Fichtner) threatens the turtles, “We will drain every last drop of blood (to get the mutagen) even if it kills them.” Thing is, although this movie is downright stupid,

A SPLASH OF RED Enjoy an Italian evening and art event with an Okanagan twist when A Splash of Red returns to the Caetani estate gardens Aug. 21. The fundraiser for the Caetani Cultural Centre starts at 5:30 p.m. with an aperitif reception and art viewing, followed by a three-course Italian dinner complete with wine pairings, all served family style under the stars. Suggested attire is one of casual elegance with the colours black, white and red recommended. A live art auction and door prizes will finish off the evening, featuring spectacular original works from 20 renowned artists. The traveling multi-media exhibition organized by the Ottawa Art Gallery titled Decolonize Me includes works by the Canadian mainstream First Nations artists Sonny Assu, Jordan Bennett, Cheryl L’Hirondelle, Nigit’stil Norbert, Barry Pottle and Bear Witness. This exhibition addresses the issues of colonial history in Canada. The exhibition titled PUTI KwALA Okanagan/We are Still Here runs concurrently and features works of local First Nations artists Barbara Marchand, Mariel Belanger, Dean Louis and Sheldon Louis. Om gets it right om: The Tipping Point

ernon trip hop duo OM’s (Orion and Marina Miller) second album, The Tipping Point is an evocative mix of urban grooves and environmental message music. The duo and their producer (Steve Winton) find empathy in the neo psychedelic hint-ofreverb vibe that Dean Gordon-Smith adds sheen to the group’s vocal interplay. They complement each other sonically: Orion’s biting, rap-influenced vocal balanced by Marina’s rich and mellow delivery. For two sounds so different, they find common space. The two are adept in wordplay and a

stream-of-sound attack (Mitakuye Oyasin) of clever lyrics that are blunt and colourful (Save the Beat). That song has an insistent dark groove that brings a rustle of unrest to The Tipping Point. The band’s natural sense of groove and commentary find a fluid direction in the acoustic-based hip hop workout, The Dynamo of Volition – an urban beat lament whose warm vibe the duo finds strength in. The record’s deep sound has an appealing unpredictability. A New Age earnestness is rounded off by humorous rap lyrics – it’s an unusual combination that keeps the other in check. The thread that ties it all together is a groove cycle that is organic and spacey, a reflection of the lyrics. OM mixes acoustic and electric instruments with synths, beats and electronics and “gets” how the blend is used to create a flowing groove and hypnotic songs.
