Weekend promises 2 big events For some, an August weekend is a sleepy time of hot weather and holiday fun. For Tri-Cities residents this weekend, however, there’s plenty of action. Wh e n C o q u i t l a m Search and Rescue is called to help locate a missing hiker, the volunteer crew mobilizes at the search site as quickly as possible. Their mobile command centre is another story. Despite the crew’s best efforts, their vehicle is not aging gracefully. It sags
under the weight of the team’s gear — everything from chainsaws to highpowered lighting, generators, tents, medical equipment, maps and loads of communications technology — and, under all that weight, lacks the power to get to remote locations. Coquitlam SAR is now embarking on some serious fundraising for a new, custom-built truck. “This is our 20-yearold bread truck,” joked SAR member Bob Hetherington. see PROVINCE, page 4

When Sgt. Brad Sheridan of Port Moody Po l i c e D e p a r t m e n t began tweeting about the routine events taking place during his shift, he thought it would be a way to give local residents a glimpse into what officers face while on duty. Two year have passed since then and the popularity of PMPD’s tweetalongs have surprised the longtime cop, who has received messages from people from across

Some people will even participate in ridealongs, an experience he believes can be replicated virtually using Twitter. “It creates an engagement with the community that we wouldn’t otherwise have,” he said. “It shows people what we deal with on a day-today basis.” Over the two years that he has hosted tweetalongs, Sheridan said

He also has to be careful about how much information he reveals about a suspect or the identities of the people involved in a police incident. As well, he tends to steer away from some of the darker aspects of the job, noting that the funnier stories generally garner the best responses.
For example, the tweet above about two people in a dispute slapping each other with flip flops had more than 700 retweets. Later in the evening, another post about a man who fled a traffic stop and then fought with an officer was only shared twice. “People are very attuned to humourous things,” he said. “Those really catch people’s interest.”

If you answer this call, harsh language is authorized.”) Sheridan is one of a growing number of Lower Mainland police officers with their own Twitter accounts. Most departments are also on social media, although engagement and consistency of posts varies. “If I didn’t enjoy it, I wouldn’t do it,” he said.“It wouldn’t work. “It’s done great work for us but we’re limited to where we can take it.” With thousands of pounds of gear loaded on the truck, it’s only capable of handling paved roads or the most well-maintained gravel ones, even though volunteers are constantly shifting gear in and out to help ease the pressure on the old rig. And with a search area that covers approximately 1,800 sq. km, the truck’s mileage has not only reached its limit, it’s also contributing to response time delays. Once on the scene, as many as five or more volunteers are crammed into the tiny space as they monitor radios, track multiple teams and plan search routes, making for hot, uncomfortable conditions for several hours. A Coquitlam SAR committee has been working on plans for a new truck for nearly two years. Applications for provincial gaming grants and the Spirit of Coquitlam grant program will be sent over the next two months and SAR has also posted a “Donate Now” button on its website, where donors can specify that their money go to a new mobile command centre. “We’re also going to be approaching all the municipalities and the two villages we serve... and the city of Burnaby,” said SAR spokesperson Michael Coyle, adding volunteers are also looking into funding opportunities with Metro Vancouver. The new truck is ex-
pected to cost about $300,000 and SAR is hoping it will be operational by early 2016. Coyle noted that while search and rescue tasks are paid for by the province with tax revenue, capital projects such as the new command centre are not. “Without support from the communities we serve,” Coyle said, “we could not afford this replacement. Driver in hit and run Charges against 3 in cabin arson turns self in to cops By Gary McKenna The Tri-CiTy News
The driver involved in a hit-and-run collision on the Mary Hill Bypass last month that left a cyclist seriously injured has turned himself in to police. Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung said the suspect came forward on Saturday, one day after traffic services investigators held a press conference identifying the type of vehicle involved in the collision and urging the driver to come forward. While the driver is cooperating with police and turned his vehicle over to investigators, Chung said it could be a while before charges are approved. “We still need more information about what happened before, during and after the collision to corroborate his account,” he told The Tri-City News. “From that point, we will put everything we find out and all the evidence, and send it to Crown.” On Friday, a day before the suspect turned himself in, police made an appeal to the public, asking anyone with information about a 2006 or 2007 Toyota Tacoma that may have recently had repairs to come forward. The request to the public followed an incident on July 30 when cyclist Bruce Rickman was struck just before midnight on the Mary Hill Bypass just north of Kingsway Avenue in Port Coquitlam. According to police, Rickman was riding home from work on the east shoulder when he was hit by the truck. The victim was recently released from the intensive care unit of Royal Columbian Hospital. Despite the fact that
FORKLIFT DRAGGED AWAY
Coquitlam RCMP are looking for information on a forklift stolen from a Lougheed Highway business. Mounties said between 9:30 p.m. on Aug. 7 and 7 a.m. on Aug. 8, a suspect entered the unsecured back lot of the business in the 3000-block of Lougheed Highway and stole the older forklift, a red Toyota lift, model 7FBOU25. The key was stored inside the business and there were skid marks on the pavement where the forklift had been. Investigators believe the thieves dragged it on to another vehicle. Charges have been laid against three men for allegedly setting fire last month to a 60-yearold cabin located on the edge of Widgeon Creek. M i c h a e l E d wa rd McNeil, Jamie Ryan Plante and Christopher Conway Sine are each facing one count of arson related to the blaze that took place on July 7.
The three men turned themselves in to police hours after media outlets broadcast photos of the suspects around the cabin shortly before it went up in the flames. The images were shot with a Bushnell hunting camera that the owner of the property had set up in a nearby tree. Given the hot, dry weather at the time of
the fire, police said it was fortunate the blaze did not spread to the nearby forrest. The flames were hot enough to scorch trees 20 feet away and even the camera that took the images was slightly melted from the heat, although the memory card was not damaged. David Clarke, one of the owners of the cabin,
told The Tri-City News last month that the cabin was built in the 1950s for duck hunters and the structure had been in his family ever since. The blaze destroyed the cabin, along with photographs and log books that were kept documenting water levels and weather. gmckenna@tricitynews.com

arents trying to guess whether school will start in two weeks are just as in the dark as everyone else. They would like to see an agreement between the BC Teachers’ Federation and the province’s bargaining arm, the BC Public School Employers’ Association, but are concerned they have been put on the sidelines as flag girls in a desperate game of chicken. Or maybe the game is chess and they don’t want their kids to be pawns. But face it, few eligible parents will turn down the province’s promise of $40 a day to cover childcare costs for children under 13 years of age even though many undoubtedly understand that this is just a bribe that could prolong the dispute and, worse, further deplete funds that should be targeted towards education. (And let us just state clearly: That money was collected to fund the public education system and that’s what it should do.) We can only hope that with time running out before Sept. 2, the two sides are back to serious negotiations.

his August, the Crossroads Hospice Society (CHS) thrift store marks 10 years in operation and it’s a significant milestone.Year after year, it is an important source of support for the society’s work.The thrift store success builds on a unique and satisfying community-oriented operational model. The 10-year anniversary is a good time to reflect on the success factors, consider the tremendous benefits and thank the many volunteers and supporters who have made it all possible. Thrift stores can be messy businesses.The premises are selected and operated to minimize overheads.There are the weekend and midnight “donations”that are left spilling out on parking lots.There are the challenges of sorting and dealing with a huge diversity of items in various conditions. And in the Tri-Cities, the thrift store market is competitive, including commercial operations.
So why does Crossroads run a thrift store? The reason is rooted in the mission. CHS aims to provide compassionate support for patients and their families who are affected by the end-of-life experience. One of the many hard parts about losing someone you love is how to manage what they’ve left behind.The thrift store helps make these decisions a little easier. We provide a destination for clothing and other small items. We treat both the items and the people bringing them in with care and respect. And we endeavour to put suitable donations to good use by providing support to organizations such as the Downtown Eastside Women’s group, Doctors Without Borders and to local churches assisting the homeless. And of course, many donated items become available to others through purchase in the store. Money generated by CHS thrift store sales goes directly to our 10-bed hospice at Inlet Centre in Port Moody.The revenue supports grieving families, provides comfort measures in the hospice and trains our visiting volunteers. We use it to educate our community about hospice care and its benefits.

The CHS thrift store also works collectively with other hospice thrift stores to raise awareness about hospice services. Not everyone knows about hospice and the option it provides. For many, the thrift store is the front door to learning about hospice services; for others who have lost a loved one in hospice, it can provide a meaningful volunteer experience. The store sales operation is a model for two of the environmental R’s: reuse and recycle. Instead of going to the landfill, our plethora of useful and beautiful donations is reused in the community at bargain prices. Whatever can’t be sold, such as metals and obsolete electronics, are recycled. It provides an alternative shopping experience for the community — the chance to give and get at the same time. The revenue generated also allows CHS to minimize its active direct fundraising efforts in the Tri-Cities, recognizing that there are limited community resources and many worthwhile “asks.” The CHS thrift store success would not be possible without volunteers. Close to 80 volunteers bring their time, passion and hard work to
our storefront.Volunteering is invaluable for the store operation and CHS extends its heartfelt thanks.Through their activities, our volunteers also develop a sense of value and purpose for their effort, meet new friends, learn new skills and share their expertise. And we appreciate employers who donate funds in proportion to the volunteer contributions of their former staff. The Crossroads Hospice thrift store is looking ahead to offering a broader range of services. A “declutter and downsize”initiative is under consideration to assist people with these sometimes challenging processes. We know other communities have embraced such a service and we expect it would be welcomed if we were to offer it here. If, as Wikipedia defines,“a social enterprise is an organization that applies commercial strategies to maximize improvements in human and environmental well-being,”the Crossroads Hospice thrift store, we believe, delivers admirably. A Coquitlam volunteer who has helped transform lives by helping newcomers learn English is now about to undergo her own transformation. Lara Casillas, who has been volunteering with the English Practice Group run by Share Family and Community Services since 2009, has been awarded a Drake Medox College scholarship to learn to be a community support worker. A mother of two boys, Casillas said the $7,000 scholarship will enable her to learn practical skills to continue her role as communicator, advocate and community leader. Casillas, who is from Mexico and speaks several languages, is a strong

Two mega-infrastructure projects in Coquitlam have scooped accolades from the Vancouver Regional Construction Association. The Evergreen Line rapid transit line (built by Southwest Contracting) and the Coquitlam UV Disinfection plant (Lockerbie & Hole Contracting) each won silver awards from the organization this month in the categories of Trade Contractor Over $3 Million and Mechanical Contractor Over $3 Million. According to a VRCA news release, the projects were recognized for their use of innovative techniques, new materials or ex-
ceptional management. The silver prize recipients will be up for gold awards during the group’s 26th annual VRCA gala dinner on Oct. 16.

Coquitlam’s Knights of Columbus chapter was recognized at the organization’s convention this week, winning the international service award for its church activities. Council 5540 was honoured at the 132nd annual gathering in Orlando, Fl., for its role in finishing a chapel. The council raised $15,000 for a new altar and tabernacle topped with a wooden cross made from a piece of the altar used by Pope St.

Performers in the Music For The Hearts show each received certificates from Karen Horton, ERH’s director of development, said Mehran Mirahmadi, who co-organized the fundraiser with Pedram Laghaei and Parisa Safavi. “As a volunteer at Eagle Ridge Hospital and a Tri-Cities’ resident, I was very honoured to be able to give back to my local hospital by organizing a night of fine music for my community,� Safavi said in the release.

If you are on Vancouver Island this weekend, there is another great auto show worth visiting. The 2014 Vancouver Island Motor Gathering will take place on Sunday at the Viscount Aero Centre, at 9800 McDonald Park Road, in Sidney. It’s an annual event presented by the German Auto Import Network (GAIN), with proceeds going to the Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island and the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation. Hundreds of spectacular cars, motorcycles and even some airplanes are expected. Rare examples of the Porsche 904, 2006 Ford GT, and a 1964 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster will be among many classics. Be sure also to check out the Aston Martin DB5, Lamborghini Aventador, Ferrari 348i and Pininfarina-styled 308 GTB. Some of Western Canada’s unique never before seen cars, collectively worth millions, will be on display at the Hard Rock Casino Vancouver’s Ultimate Car Show. But it’s my bet that an ‘old’ bus may will capture the attention of many attending the free auto extravaganza, set to get underway in the outdoor parking lot at 2080 United Blvd., Coquitlam, this Saturday, at 1 p.m. The Red Bull tour bus, built by Abbotsford’s 360 Fabrications, will take its place among more than 350 uniquely designed exotic, muscle and collector cars at this inaugural event, staged by the casino in partnership with 360. The bus, which doubles as an outdoor stage, was actually built from three buses – the front metre and a half was a 1960 transit bus, whereas the remaining 12 metres is a 1974 Silver Eagle built on a 2012 freightliner frame. Inside is a party room with coolers and video screens, which doubles as a green room when the world famous beverage company puts it into action at a concert or festival. It is also a fully functional transformer with 120,000-watt sound system and 80,000-watt generator. Keeping it company will be some impressive automobiles, including a 2015 Aston Martin Vanquish, one of only two in Canada; a 1965 Malibu SS, appraised at over $500,000; and a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro appraised at more than $700,000. The 2015 McLaren 650S is one of the most highly anticipated vehicles to come into the market and one will be featured at the event. Car and Driver magazine dubbed it as McLaren’s bid to compete with Ferrari. It has a twin-turbocharged and intercooler DOHC 32-valve

in the city and want to save more fuel? Pop it in Eco mode. Heading to a track and want the best access to power? That’s a Sport+ kind of day. My weapon of choice, even for everyday driving, was the Sport mode. It gives the vehicle enough edge to make it fun and exciting, but without the harshness and abrupt gear changes that would be better suited for the track. In Sport mode, the modified shifts and throttle response was sensitive enough to add immediate power but not overwhelming, especially in an urban setting. Then there was the steering response, whose curve is adjusted to give you a better grasp for the road, but without the abruptness, a Sport mode could potentially offer. Regardless, whether I was in the 300 or 400, I was a happy driver. And I had a happy passenger because we both sat in comfort for the hundreds of kilometres we put on this next generation sedan. Along with its new interior and exterior look, the C Classes are equipped with the next generation of infotainment systems. That comes complete with touchpad, integrated media interface and MB apps. The touchpad and I still need more bonding time. I found it confusing to use at first and I ended up pressing buttons I shouldn’t have! But if that’s the harshest criticism of the vehicle I have, it’s not doing too badly. Okay, the B pillars are quite wide and intrude on my blind spot visibility, but again, properly adjusting the mirrors and a shoulder glance will eliminate those anxieties. When it comes to driving, it checks off all the boxes necessary to make it a luxury sedan. It’s quiet. Road and engine noises are kept at bay. Its interior materials are soft touch and pleasing to the eyes. And it feels great to drive at slow or high speeds.

Seattle, Wash. – Mount Rainier in Washington State stands 4,392 m high. Its majestic presence is topped off with an icy garnish, as well as wispy tufts of clouds that surround its peak. It leaves onlookers in awe. The crystal white hue of Mercedes-Benz C400 seems to have a similar effect on people. They can’t help but stare. Some take photos. Some admire from up close, some from afar. The C-Class is a staple product in the Mercedes-Benz lineup and is their most popular-selling vehicle in the family. It’s also one that plays a vital role in the Canadian market, one that usually involves snow! While the all-new C-Class isn’t covered in snow (just yet), it can certainly handle it with minimal effort. All C-Class sedans come standard with Mercedes’ 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. Focus on late-model Ford The Ford Focus is an affordable and underrated used compact car. It got a major makeover for the 2008 model year: an all-new coupe (two-door) edition was introduced to complement the stalwart four-door sedan. Lamentably, however, the popular in Canada (but not in the U.S.) wagon and Euro-style hatchback versions of Focus were discontinued. The ‘08 refresh of Focus included new front and rear body fascias, improved sound insulation, a redesigned interior and a multi-media upgrade. The ‘08 Focus is also an about 45 kg (100 lb.) lighter and weight-reduction measures included the elimination of a spare tire, which was replaced by an inflator kit. (A real spare tire/wheel could be added as an option.) An auto industry landmark was reached when Ford teamed with Microsoft to offer a multi-media system called Sync, which, for the first time, allowed control of digital music players and cellular phones with voice commands. The Sync system was a ($495) option with the SE trim level and standard with SES. On the downside, electronic stability control was not offered on any version of the ‘08 Focus. The most noticeable change from a driving perspective was the reduction in outside noise and chassis vibration. The quieter cabin is the result of sound deadening improvements that include the use of thicker glass. The steering column in this Focus is also mounted on a stronger crossbeam beneath the instrument panel, which helps eliminate vibrations. The only engine (in Canada) was a 2.0-litre, dual-overhead-cam, 4-cylinder engine, which came with a new air

Fuel economy is 8.4 l/100km in the city and highway fuel economy is rated at a phenomenal 5.9 l/100km with the auto. The manual slightly increases city consumption and reduces highway consumption, so overall the rating is the same. Overall, the coupe performed better than the sedan in IIHS crash tests as the sedan got lower scores in side impacts. All editions of the ‘08 Focus came with a new design of side curtain air bag that uses a “roll-fold” technology to protect occupants
resting their heads against a window. The biggest change on the ’09 edition of the Focus was the inclusion of electronic stability control as standard on the SES trim. It was also standard with a new SEL mid-level sedan trim and an option on lower trim levels. The coupe also got a sportier appearance package and a minor improvement in performance. Just minor tweaking of trim packages followed in ’10. In ’11, the coupe edition was discontinued. All of which was in preparation for an all-new Focus that arrived for the 2012 model year. Nature is proving popular, by the numbers green scene Elaine Golds Links to natural world abound
W
ith a world increasingly challenged by many environmental problems, including that of global warming, I sometimes worry that people remain distracted and fail to notice the forces of nature that bind our world together are becoming increasingly frayed and weakened. Thus, I was much encouraged by a survey conducted for Environment Canada that showed a high proportion of Canadians appreciated and understand the value of the natural world. This recently published study (available at www. biodivcanada.ca) examined the awareness and attitudes towards nature expressed by 24,000 Canadians throughout 2012/’13 and showed, nationally, 92% of Canadians were aware of the term “species at risk”while 76% of us had heard of biodiversity. Slightly fewer people were aware of what “ecosystem services”are; these describe the many vital services nature provides us, including producing oxygen, creating fertile soils and purifying water through the water cycle. Apparently, 14% of all Canadians donate money to protect species at risk on an annual basis. The survey also indicated that approximately half of Canadians had chosen to live in places in part because of the access provided to nature. In B.C., this proportion was higher than the national average, with two thirds of respondents indicating they chose to live, in part, in places that offered access to nature (developers, take note!). More than half of those surveyed stated they had chosen to purchase products that were more environmentally friendly, such as bird-friendly (i.e., shadegrown organic coffee) or

While this was an encouraging finding, it was not clear if making such purchases was done on a consistent basis. An astonishingly high number of people — almost 90% — indicated they participated in some form of a nature-based activity in the past year. Admittedly, the criteria for such activities were broad and included picnicking, gardening, reading about nature or viewing nature-focused media. In B.C., only 29% of us had camped in the past year, although 76% of us claimed to have gone hiking. The category of hiking included less rugged activities such as nature walks, which likely accounts for the high proportion of participants. Some people would consider hiking to be a specific activity with a strong uphill component that often takes participants into alpine ecosystems. About a fifth of B.C. survey respondents had gone birding or fishing in the past year while those who hunted accounted for considerably less of the participants (7%). In this survey, golfing was, to my surprise, included as another nature-related activity in which 21% of us had participated. Agritourism, which I assume includes trips to local farmers’ markets, had a participation rate of 24%. These rather broad categories for nature-based activities also probably account for the high number of days that B.C. residents appeared to have participated in such activities. For example, the average number of participation

Economically, spending on nature-based activities in B.C. contributed $7.5

Whenever I have been involved with volunteer nature activities, we typically have 15 to 30 volunteers show up — not the hundred or so that would be expected if 13% of Tri-Cities residents volunteer for nature at least once a year. I suspect the criteria for“volunteering” in the survey included things such as participating in annual events such as Fingerling Festival in Port Moody or Port

When Coquitlam Jr. Adanacs head coach Neil Doddridge visited his dad in Ontario last month, he made sure to catch a Six Nations Arrows game to see one of the top eastern teams for himself. As it turns out, the scouting report will will be valuable for the A’s bench boss, who has been busy preparing his team for a Minto Cup showdown against the Arrows, which begins this weekend. “They are the best
team coming out of the east,” he told The Tr i - C i t y N e w s o n Wednesday. “They are big in the back end and they are strong offensively. It will be a good series.” Doddridge has some history with the Six Nations club. He is from the area and played for the Chiefs — the organization’s senior team — winning several Mann Cups with the squad in the 1990s. Coquitlam will have their hands full with the Arrows when they begin the best-of-seven series in Langley on Saturday.

“I really didn’t think I would make [the team],” she said in an interview before the trip. “When we heard I made it I was freaking out.” Wo l c z y k p l a c e d second at the time trials, throwing 48.02 m to secure her spot at the Youth Olympics, one of four available in the entire Western Hemisphere. Her throw in Florida was a personal best, and now that her ankle has healed she believes she can put up an even bigger number. “I am hoping to move up from where I am right now,” she said. “Now that I have had the whole summer to grow and develop, I think it will be a lot better.” Th i s w i l l n o t b e Wolczyk’s first time competing at the international level. Last year, she attended the World Youth Track and Field Championship in Donetsk, Ukraine. But she said the event in China next week will be her toughest challenge yet. Wolczyk has always loved track and field sports but over the years she has focused her efforts on javelin, an event she has always excelled at. “I just sort of started dropping the jumps and the runs and stuck with the throws,” she said. “I enjoy javelin the most.” Wolczyk’s mother Nadia said the life of a javelin thrower can be lonely at times. The off-seasons are long and there are only limited opportunities for her to compare herself to other athletes and gauge her progress. “She worked so hard in the off-season and then to sprain her ankle in March in a soccer game, we thought there would be no way she could pull this off in Florida,” Nadia said.

MURRAY
CATHERINE ELAINE NOVEMBER 15,1925 - AUGUST 10, 2014 GRAND/MOTHER, NEWS JUNKIE AND FIERCE FRIEND Catherine Elaine (Costello) Murray died at home in Port Moody at the age of 88 on Sunday August 10th of congestive heart failure. She was predeceased by her husband Lewis Owen Murray in 2001 and in-laws John and Joan Murray. Catherine Elaine is survived by her daughter Catherine Murray (Larry Buchan), son Lewis Jeffrey John Murray (Jennifer Rosebrugh) of Ottawa, beloved grandson Lawrence Buchan and partner Genelle Pietramala of Port Moody, nephews Cameron, Douglas and Malcolm Murray and families from Gabriola, Fort McMurray, Mont Tremblant and Charlottetown. An Ontario girl for most of her life, Elaine attended Lisgar Collegiate in Ottawa, served as a WREN in the Navy during WWII as a dental nurse at Cornwallis Nova Scotia, and opted for a BA at Western Ontario, where she wowed her husband as President of the Debating Club, and President of the Western Young Liberals Association, pastimes never surrendered. She worked at the National Film Board as a stock shot archivist, became a lifelong avid CBC radio fan after a Bachelor of Journalism from Carleton’s J school, and worked at the local TV station as freelancer. Her family moved to Waterloo, Ontario, where she lived for over 50 years, working as a highschool teacher at Eastwood and at Bluevale Collegiates creating the Waterloo County High School English Newspaper Award. Elaine served on the Board of the Waterloo County Board of Education Credit Union and was one of the founding members of Waterloo’s Women’s Inventor’s Network. A wonderful mother, raconteur, news junkie, and feisty conversationalist with an insatiable curiosity, Catherine Elaine Murray was undaunted by the onset of Macular Degeneration which left her legally blind. She was a pioneer of early computer technologies for text/voice translation, loyal user of CNIB’s talking book services, and active in the senior’s book club in Port Moody animated by Renelle Acres, librarian. Elaine learned to love the mountains in the west which she first found intimidating after her move, found peace by the ocean, the rose gardens, and especially her beloved Rocky Point and South Pender Island. Thanks to the Tri City Palliative Care Unit, the staff and doctors of Eagle Ridge Hospital MCU unit, the incredible doctors Dr. Daniel J. Metzak, GP and Dr. Benjamin Leung, Cardiologist and Dr. Isabel Uzaraga of the Palliative Team and Dr. Jonathan Barchuk, dentist with the soft touch. Thanks especially to the resourceful team at Access Health in Coquitlam, who enabled full independence for most of Elaine’s 12 years in Port Moody living with her daughter’s family with the support of Veteran’s Affairs Canada. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CNIB, the Port Moody and Waterloo public libraries, or the Mennonite Central Committee of Canada . A Celebration of Catherine’s life will take place on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at 2:00 pm at the Old Mill Boathouse, 2715 Esplanade, Port Moody, B.C. and in Waterloo, Ontario at a later date.
