A surge in sockeye numbers and fishing runs in the Fraser river has prices dropping for the fresh catches, but retailers and wholesalers alike say good deals on the fish are unpredictable. At Western Foods, which has locations in Langford and Sooke, the retail price is expected to drop dramatically, said director Laura Lum. “I heard about a big run this year,” she said, noting their cost on sockeye was expected to drop by almost half this week. “You’ll see some great deals coming up.” Meanwhile, John MacAulay, meat and seafood manager for the Market on Millstream, says while they’ve seen some lowering of prices, their Victoria and Vancouver wholesale suppliers haven’t cut costs substantially. “Prices have come down a bit – they may come further,” he said. “I don’t think there’s really been large numbers of sockeye hitting the market yet. Hopefully we’ll see a further decrease in prices.” Sockeye salmon is a commodity in a volatile market, said Jason Bater, seafood category manager for Thrifty Foods. Not only that, he said, its popularity has been largely driven by its visual appeal. “I believe it’s a case of we eat with our eyes. That bright red colour that sockeye has is so visually appealing, so beautiful on the plate.” Bater said sockeye sources and availability can change rapidly, leading to just as rapid price fluctuations. “Conditions in the fisheries can change overnight,” he said. “The cost today might not necessarily be the cost tomorrow.”

Say the word “art” and the images that spring instantly to mind are of traditional paint and canvas, perhaps a sketchpad or two. Throw knitters, feather painters, musicians and nature enthusiasts into the mix and the celebration of art at Coast Collective in Colwood becomes much more eclectic. Barb Logie has been a member of the gallery nearly five years, displaying her hand-knit and crocheted scarves and shawls. She loves its freedom and variety. “It’s 150 artists doing exactly what they please,” she says. Sitting in the sun, with a gentle breeze wafting her wares and wool twining her fingers as she works, Logie certainly does seem content. Bobbie Momsen has been fortunate to be doing ‘exactly as she pleases’ for 16 years. She found her passion while travelling through Costa Rica in the mid-’90s when she came across the tradition of feather painting. “I fell in love with it, and thought, ‘that’s what I want to do,’” she says. Using careful brushstrokes and following the grain of her feather canvas, Momsen creates vivid portraits of every bird imaginable, from the delicate hummingbird to the prehistoriclike blue heron on an equally varied selection of feathers. Barb Logie knits her latest shawl in the sunshine during the recent Clothesline exhibit at Coast Collective in Colwood. Logie uses wool and synthetic materials for her shawls and scarves, and experiments with both knitting and crocheting for her gallery wares. 3,000 pieces since she began in the late ‘90s, she’s become quite well known as a feather collector, she says, and hasn’t had trouble maintaining a supply of her particular canvases. “People bring me bags of feathers. I’ve had cockatoo feathers mailed from Australia and one flamingo feather from Florida. I could build flocks of birds with the feathers I’ve got at home.” Momsen’s work fitted in perfectly with last Saturday’s birdthemed Clothesline Art Show staged at the Collective. The feathered celebration featured everything from watercolour herons and hanging artisan bird-

houses to knitted chicken slippers and quilted table runners adorned with avian images. Bill Dancer with the Victoria Natural History Society was also manning a table, showing off bird’s nests, eggs, feathers and even a preserved wingspan. Art, much like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. Whether it’s with braided alpaca wool, or careful brushstrokes on a raven’s wing feather, or the art of teaching children to value the natural world, art goes far beyond a simple paintbrush and canvas and can be found wherever there’s a passion for creating. acowan@goldstreamgazette.com

Erin Coulson, communications manager for Thrifty’s in Victoria, said the company has “made the conscious decision to stay with the local supplier to bring in Johnstone Strait fish.” Because extra fisheries that have opened have so far been further up the Fraser River, any price changes resulting from a surge of sockeye aren’t likely to affect Thrifty’s prices, she added. The Johnstone Strait fishery has been “going strong” and will open again this week, according to Neil Kipling, purchaser for wholesaler Albion Fisheries. They’re also hoping to see a larger Fraser River opening, which could lead to a further drop in prices, he said. “Part of the softening (of prices) of sockeye is the Fraser River forecast, and based on that speculation, it will continue to drop.” While prices this year are clearly much lower than last year, the comparison isn’t completely accurate, said Terry Yoshikawa, also a buyer for Albion. “As far as last year was concerned, there was no fishery. There were a lot of river systems that were closed,” he said, adding that this year is similar to the surge that happened in 2010. “This year we might even see the fish run until early to midSeptember.” acowan@goldstream gazette.com

A few days before a group of Victoria-area runners known as the Mud Mulisha put on their first obstacle run at Shawnigan Lake, Frontrunners Westshore staffer Christy Simard came to organizers with a brainstorm. What if people donated their spent shoes after the race? “Instead of them being thrown out (after Saturday’s gruelling event), they got thrown into Rubbermaid totes and brought down here on Monday,” she said. She estimated that nearly 200 pairs of shoes were donated. Staff cleaned them up and sat them out to dry this week. They’re destined for charity organizations such as the Mustard Seed and programs like the Victoria Cool-Aid Society’s Every Step Counts, an initiative spearheaded by Frontrunners founder Rob Reid. Jay Wright, one of the principal members of the Mulisha, was so busy with organizing the race that he left it in Simard’s hands. She put notes on the race’s Facebook page as well as her store’s and had the Mulisha announce about the campaign at the race. The totes were left in a prominent place and filled up as more people came across the line. Wright was flabbergasted at the number of shoes left behind by runners. “I was blown away by the number of people (who donated) … I thought she gave me way too many bins,” he said. “I was shocked. That’s all the good will of the racing community and Frontrunners. I’m really happy that it worked out like it did. Our first and most common theme we see in portfolios is ‘home country bias’. This is a term to describe investors’ natural tendency to be most attracted to investments in domestic markets. Investors who exhibit this bias tend to hold optimistic expectations about the domestic markets and do not strongly diversify their portfolios with international market securities. As a Canadian, this can be particularly perilous and pose a significant weakness within investment portfolios. The domestic Canadian equity market possesses high sector-concentration. In fact, 75% to 80% of the Canadian stock market is concentrated in three sectors; energy (oil and gas companies), materials (mining companies) and financial services (banks, insurers and asset managers). To add insult to injury, these sectors are highly cyclical, which means that the Canadian market is particularly sensitive to economic weakness and can result in higher portfolio volatility.

Riding for life, but not their own Making a statement is something Gazette reporter Arnold Lim is used to, in terms of his photography and videography and more recently, with his writing. Over the past couple of years, Lim has taken on new ways of demonstrating his thoughts and feelings on certain issues. Primarily, they’ve involved climbing on a bike and pedalling hundreds of kilometres, to raise funds and tell the stories of the challenges, hopes, fears and dreams of people battling life-threatening diseases and those who support them. This summer, he committed a week of his time away from his family and his job – as did West Shore residents Andy Harward and Heather MacFayden and nine other Greater Victorians – to ride the ALS Cycle of Hope between Kamloops and Keremeos. That commitment to charity is not taken lightly by those of us in the media who often attempt to rally community support through stories and photographs. Lim’s regular blog posts from this year’s ride (find them at bit.ly/1oKlDgu) have touched many a reader and strike at the heart of the painful, frustrating journey that is ALS. He’s kept a photographic record of the ride and its poignant moments on his Facebook page and left a permanent record for subsequent rides. Diving in headfirst to such an initiative isn’t new for Lim. Last year, he was Black Press’ media rider on the Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock, a dedicated team of peace officers and a few others who train through the summer then ride the length of Vancouver Island come September, inspiring fundraising efforts in support of pediatric cancer patients. As a parent with young children, Lim knows the importance of family and isn’t afraid to demonstrate that understanding. We applaud his heart and his willingness to literally go the extra mile to support others facing devastating life circumstances. And with the 2014 Cycle of Hope now completed, we congratulate Heather, Andy and the other team riders for a job well done. In a perfect world there would be no need for such projects. Since there is, we’re glad people like these folks are willing to take very public actions to support others in a time of need.

Don’t squander money on islet Re: Proposed Capital Regional District expropriation of Grace Islet How is it that Victoria Coun. Ben Isitt can propose a meeting (in camera no less) to expropriate the contentious Grace Islet property near Saltspring Island? This is tax money that is being discussed, and as such, those of us who pay these taxes rightly deserve an opportunity to have a say in how this money is to be spent. The CRD has already squandered funds on property purchased in Esquimalt for the sewage treatment biosolids plant. That issue has yet to be resolved and many residents of the region are already encumbered with the everescalating costs attached to the sewage project. News reports state the Grace Islet property is valued at $1 million. To even think about expropriating this property is patently absurd. Any proposed resolution of this issue rightly belongs with the province, the owner and First Nations – possibly even with the participation of the federal government, but it has absolutely nothing to do with the CRD. Remedies can be sought through the Provincial Court system if the original seller, the current owner, and First Nations cannot find a reasonable remedy. Isitt can by all means enjoy his personal opinion on this matter, but he is entirely wrong in thinking the taxpayers of Greater Victoria should be obligated

Park visitors need to have pride in their green spaces I am pursuing my master’s degree at Royal Roads University. As Thetis Lake is a place with serenity close to my doorstep, I enjoy riding my bike around the lake. I meditate on a hill on one edge of the lake, which is one of my favourite spots. On my visits to the lake the last few weeks, I found the place where I sit to meditate surrounded for about 20 metres by plastic bottles, cigarette butts, polyethylene bags, pop cans and other trash. I voluntarily collect the trash every time I visit that spot and have observed that the scattered debris is increasing day by day. Now every time I go to meditate at my spot I also collect the trash and dump it in one of the bins on my way home. But what about the other places? I am not sure if this trash is entering the water body, but if it does, the consequences definitely will not be in favour of humans and nature. While entering Thetis Lake Park, one can notice a sign board which says “$200 fine on Alcohol consumption,” however, I didn’t

With no medals given out at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta other than for race winners, there’s plenty of future incentive for the hundreds of rowers who don’t cross the finish line first. Liam Keane, a 15-year-old athlete from Metchosin for whom last week’s Henley races wound up his second full year in the sport, has tasted both victory and defeat. Rowing for the Victoria City Rowing Club, he was part of the winning under-17 men’s eight and men’s quad teams at the regatta and was second in the U17 men’s double final. The wins erased narrow VCRC losses last year in the men’s eight (by 0.5 seconds) and quad (by two seconds) in his first trip to St. Catharine’s, Ont. for the regatta, he said. “After those two losses, (training became all about) get hungry for the gold, get hungry,” said Keane, a student at St. Andrew’s Regional High School in Saanich. “The one mindset was to win. Everything really paid off and we were a lot more focused this time. Every stroke I took it was in the back of my mind, ‘half a second.’ It was pretty sweet winning.” Vic. City’s quad boat won by more than 10 seconds, while the eights finished almost seven seconds in front. In the double final Sunday, Keane and partner Sean Van Gessel crossed the line just 0.8 seconds behind the winners. “That’s the race that’s going to make me hungry for next year,” Keane said. “There’s always more to reach for.” Among other West Shore athletes rowing at this highly competitive international meet, Emma Gribbon was part of the U17 women’s quad 4x winning boat, which captured victory by more than 10 seconds. She was also part of the second-place U17 women’s eight boat that finished about five seconds behind. Keane’s older brother Patrick, 17, who rowed for Canada at the junior world championships last year, placed second in the U19 men’s single final and was fourth in the U23 men’s lightweight single. Amanda MacKenzie was part of the fifth-place U17 women’s quad boat. VCRC junior coach Scott Swinkles was thrilled with the team’s overall performance at Henley. He said the 34-athlete contingent collected a clubbest nine wins – including a club record-tying four in the junior division – and finished fourth for the efficiency trophy amongst 137 clubs. Efficiency measures the number of wins divided by the total number of events entered. “It showed there’s quite a lot of strength and depth (in the club) that we’re able to take such a large team and do so well,” Swinkles said. editor@goldstream gazette.com

The Belmont Bulldogs have come a long way since starting out on the lowest rung of the high school football ladder in 2006. Regardless of their solid 3-3 record in their first year playing at the AAA level in 2013, the highest in the province, there’s always going to be the inevitable comparisons to the boys in purple across town. Bulldogs head coach Alexis Sanschagrin, who joined the program four years ago, has as good a measuring stick as anyone. He spent the previous five years coaching the purple-clad Mount Douglas Rams. “We’re basically in the same spot Mount Doug was in five years ago,” he says. “If we keep doings things right and keep improving, we’re going to be more and more competitive every year,” he says. “There’s a lot of very good athletes out here. Now we’re confident that we’re offering a good product and kids on the West Shore have a great alternative to commuting and travelling across town to play.” As the Bulldogs prepare to open training camp Monday (Aug. 20) at Goudy Field for its junior and senior teams – the teacher’s strike will prevent Sanschagrin, a teacher at Arbutus middle school, from participating – the people who have built the program can look back and feel good about its evolution. Not only is the senior varsity team becoming more of a factor in B.C., individual players are getting recognized for their abilities. This summer Dontae Bull, Tanner Hayward and Darian Jules represented B.C. at the under-16 Red River Cup in Winnipeg. Three more: lineman Kolton Henderson, quarterback Brendan Holland and tight end Edgar Nelson are shortlisted for the U18 B.C. team – Sanschagrin is defensive co-ordinator – that will play at the U.S. Army International

Getting the whole family behind the wheel for fun British Columbians start driving at an early age. We can barely walk on two feet before many of us are pushing replica models over the carpet at home, complete with self-generated engine sound effects. Then it’s dodgem cars at the fun fair or pedal cars like those that youngsters will be revving up at the 2014 Vancouver Island Motor Gathering on Sunday at the Viscount Aero Centre, at 9800 McDonald Park Road, in Sidney. Dodgem cars are not the recommended way to learn how to drive as the intent is to ram into as many others as possible! Despite the moniker, that’s what I found to be the aim when I got behind the wheel of what were called bumper cars back in the 1960s. However, the pedal cars from the Tom Thumb Safety Program teach traffic and pedestrian safety to children from five to eight years old and thus intro-

duces hundreds of kids every year to the joys of being at the wheel. Of course, the annual Vancouver Island event, presented by the German Auto Import Network (GAIN) is not Dodgem just for kids. It promises cars are not the four-wheel fun for the entire family and raises recommended way money for the Children’s to learn how to Health Foundation of drive. Splish, splash diesel dash to ride a wave Summer. What a wonderful time of year, heading out on the open road with family. Okay, it isn’t all fun and games, especially with 11-year-old and nine-year-old boys bickering in the back seat, but for the most part it can be enjoyable. For the first time I recently decided to take a road trip to one of my many car-related events. Usually I fly to a vehicle launch, but this time I thought I would take some extra time, and the family, on the road from Vancouver to Portland, Oregon. While I attended the 2015 Dodge Challenger event at the Portland International Raceway, my family could take in some of the local sites.

I checked in throughout the day and the comments were universal. “This is the best waterpark ever!” As I wrapped up the day at the track, I did get a frantic call from my wife “The Jeep has lost power, I can’t drive over 30 mph, what should I do?” The gang at Chrysler jumped to attention and before I knew it, I was on the road with another Jeep Diesel and being accompanied by two PR reps in a 2015 Challenger. From the track to my stranded family took over an hour; in total they sat at a Shell station for two hours waiting. To pass the time, the kids ate what they wanted from the Shell convenience store and taking “selfies” seemed to do the trick. Once we arrived, we realized a Dodge dealership was literally five minutes up the road!

Day Four

With a belly full of Voodoo Doughnuts, including Double Bubble flavour, fruit loops, coco puffs and good old chocolate, we were ready to go. It took a while for our repaired Jeep to arrive so on we went to sample more tax-free shopping and some of Portland’s

Grand Cherokee is solid in heavy rain, on highway many food trucks. When the Jeep did arrive, it turns out the Diesel went into “limpmode,” enabling the driver to get to the next dealership. The fix was a simple computer program flash, which took no time at all. Regardless, we were on the road, heading to Seattle for some underground fun.

Day Five

After a great night in Seattle, we woke up to rain, lots of rain, so we went underground to visit the old, hidden city of Seattle. These tours take visitors on a walk through the ruins of Seattle after the massive fire of 1886 and the rebuilding that took place. Seattle is built on top of the old city; there are tunnels and abandoned sections of buildings there to explore. Time to head home. The Grand Cherokee never set another wheel wrong; it was fantastic in the heavy rain and very solid on the highway. After 1,300 plus kilometres behind the wheel, I averaged 8.5L/100km.

PAC parents offer tips on transition back to class

September marks the biggest transition of the year for students, and while the switch from endless summer nights to six hours days in the classroom is never painless for them, or their families, some local parents shared their own tips for making back to school time a little smoother. Audrey Smith, vice-president of Spectrum community school PAC, said that one of the first steps should be physical preparation. For elementary students, this means buying and labeling school supplies. For middle and high school students, this means going over reading lists. Going over supplies and books also helps get students into a school mindset. Reading lists for most ministrymandated courses are available online at each school’s website. Kyla Ward, a director of the

Victoria Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils (VCPAC), said that the best way for a parent to prepare their child for school is to ask questions about what they’re wondering. “Just to clear up any concerns we (parents) don’t often get answers from kids unless we ask open-ended questions,” Ward said. “If we just give solid info, it’s sometimes wrong, and that can leave them disappointed.” Sleeping schedule is also important, and though younger kids are may be more influenced by their parents’ rules, Smith said that teenagers just need to be given a reason to get up early, so its helps to plan activities for the morning. With younger kids, Ward said that its important to help them deal with things not going exactly as planned, and with the ongoing labour disputes, its unclear if the start of the school year will go as, or when, planned.

“I’m still working on it myself,” Smith said, “to help my own kids be aware of what they are planning on studying and to be ready to do some ‘pre-homework’ if the semester doesn’t start on time. If that happens, they may have to rush through their curriculum, so students who’ve already looked ahead are going to be more prepared.” Ward said that some parents are talking about different temporary solutions should the strike continue into the school year, but all parents should keep in mind a few things they can do at home. “That 15 to 20 minutes of home reading a day is key,” she said. “Engage with kids about their day, have that conversation or dialogue around the dinner table, and look for learning opportunities in everyday activity. If your younger ones are helping you cook, have them measure ingredients out.” reporter@vicnews.com

Make lunchtime fun time, says expert Daniel Palmer News staff

Kids can often be much pickier eaters than their parents, particularly when it comes to healthy options. But there are ways to pack a healthy lunch and get kids excited about eating well – even if they don’t realize they’re doing it, says Sarah Voldeng, a registered nutritionist and founder of Absolutely Nutrition in Victoria. “Eating creative is really important: when packing fruit and vegetables, make it fun for kids by cutting food out into different shapes, or making it a bit more decorative,” Voldeng says. Including yogurt or salad dips is one simple way to make vegetable and fruit healthy and exciting at the same time, she says. A second tip? Parents tend to skimp on protein when packing school lunches, often forgetting that plenty of protein helps stabilize blood sugar. “Protein is good for focus and stamina during the long school day, whether it’s meat, cheese, yogurt or other vegetarian options, that’s a substantial part of

a healthy meal for kids,” Voldeng says. A lot of parents tend to go “carb-heavy” with packed lunches and snacks (think crackers and chips) while forgetting about the importance of protein, says the nutritionist. Last, don’t forget about healthy fats. Avocado, salmon, tuna, or fatty seeds like pumpkin and sunflower do the trick while satisfying that snacking itch. “Stay away from foods that will cause fluctuation in behaviour, and foods definitely do that,” Voldeng says. “Putting in something that’s too high in refined sugars will speed kids up and cause them to crash too quickly. But healthy fats supply the brain with what it needs for healthy functioning.” editor@saanichnews.com

Having things ready the night before is a big help.” Parents can help by promoting self care as well, that means letting kids choose new shoes and snack kits for school. “They feel empowered and a sense of freedom when they can untie or unvelcro their own shoes. … Make extra time for those kind of things that they may need to do at school. If your school has indoor shoes and outdoor shoes, let them choose a new pair of shoes – how exciting is that?” Those few small things will help them feel empowered and special during their time away from their parents. Parents’ positive attitude goes along way to happy school days First day of school jitters are a normal right of passage, but for kids experiencing their first day of school ever, parents can do a lot to set the tone for years of happy school days ahead. “Send the message that you’re confident,” said Oak Bay Parent Owned Preschool teacher Amy Grbavec. “If you exude an air of confidence about preschool or school, your child will feel that and they will have the same confidence about school.” As an early childhood educator for 23 years, Grbavec has some experience with ensuring a smooth transition to school. “As parents, we’re excited about this new stage in our child’s life. But it’s very abstract to children,” she said. She lists a variety of ways to ease your child into a new learning environment. “Read books about it, ***Maisie Goes to Preschool is a good one, ask the librarian for suggestions.” She also advises moving bedtime back, so your child is well rested for school. “About two weeks prior, start tapering your bedtime routine. Most people are in summer mode so you need to transition to an earlier time, just five or 10 minutes a day. A rested mind is a rational mind,” she said. BACK TO SCHOOL Staples’ Stock the Lockers reaches out to those in need Angela Cowan News staff

With back-to-school season fast approaching, Staples is once again collecting donations for their Stock the Lockers fundraiser. The office supply retailer has partnered with a number of elementary and middle schools, as well as the 1Up Single Parent Resource Centre, to ensure that no child goes without the necessities when school starts up again. Staples is collecting cash donations until the first day of school. Proceeds from those efforts will purchase a back-to-school kit for any child whose family can’t afford it. The way it works is parents let their schools know if they need help, then the schools send a list of every child in need to Staples. The store, in turn, sends out the kits, which can be delivered anonymously through the

schools. The kits, part of the company’s School Tools program, are new this year for Staples stores in Western Canada. They give parents the chance to buy a put-together pack at a fixed price for their kids while avoiding the shopping chaos that abounds in late August. As well as binders, pens and art supplies, the kits also contain coupons from many local businesses including Pizza Hut, the YMCA and Pita Pit. For Gerry Denis, general manager of the Langford Staples, giving back to the community is one of the most important things the company does. “Whenever you’re dealing with education, it’s so important to support any causes that lead to better education and equal opportunities,” he says. A burst pipe is a home owners’ nightmare, but ask any plumber and rare is the owner who pro-actively replaces old or suspect pipes. “You see $50,000 renovations to a house, but you have to think, the house is like your body: just because you put new clothes on, it’s what’s going on inside that tells you how healthy you are,” says John Hurley, owner-operator of Olympic Plumbing and Draining. “It’s the same with plumbing. You never see proactive homeowners when it comes to plumbing. It’s all reactionary.” Hurley’s crew handles calls all over Greater Victoria including a fair share of emergency calls for burst pipes in Saanich. Whether it’s the sewer line, main water line or a drain, the costs to fix and replace the pipes escalate quickly. To avoid any immediate plumbing issues upon moving in, have a plumber do a camera inspection as part of the purchase agreement. “Plumbers can run a camera through the main lines and make sure there are no serious catastrophes waiting to happen. I especially recommend it when there are trees,” Hurley says.

Luck was on the side of Megan Kennedy of Sooke, a finalist in a draw for a new Mini on Tuesday at Quality Foods in Langford. Their names drawn at random, finalists selected one of various keys on the table to use in attempting to start up the car. All but one were dummies. Kennedy, one of the last contestants to try her key, heard the vroom and realized she had won the car. A regular shopper at the store, Kennedy hoped to be able to fit her great Dane dog in the back of the car, which has fold-down back seats. With time running out to qualify for a playoff position, the fifth-place Metchosin Cougars defeated host Oak Bay by 74 runs in a must-win Victoria and District Cricket Association Div. 1 game at Windsor Park on Sunday. The match proved to be a defensive struggle, with Metchosin managing only 127 batting, going all-out in the 37th over. The Cougars took to the field for the second innings where they have thrived all year and soon had the opposition in fits. At the first drinks break, Oak Bay had only 17 runs to show for 15 overs’ worth of batting. Timely wickets by Rajeev Ayer and ‘Spicy’ Ty Holtan kept the pressure on Oak Bay’s middle order, but it was all-rounder Danny Basson who was ultimately named man of the match. Despite a modest 13 runs batting, he dominated the opposing batsmen with an impressive five-wicket performance. In the end, Oak Bay’s final batsmen fell at the hands of Basson, leaving the home side with a final score of 57 after only 29 overs. Metchosin’s game-day captain Doug de la Mare applauded his team’s exertions. “It was a whole-team effort. Everyone contributed from top to bottom,” he said. “We were a bit unlucky with the bat, so we had to tighten up our efforts on defence. Our bowlers really came through for us today.” The team has just two more home games in the West Shore this season, Aug. 23 against Alcos and Aug. 30 against United Victoria, the very team they are chasing for the final playoff berth.
