Fisheries and Oceans Canada estimates this year’s Fraser River sockeye run could see as many as 23 million salmon. For the first time this season, 250 gillnetting boats fished the Fraser River from Steveston to Mission during a three-hour opening for the commercial fleet on Monday.
Poetry does not always have to rhyme or be didactic in nature. For Maple Ridge residents, poetry should be something shareable and relevant in today’s social media platform – and something that looks good on the sidewalk. So the District of Maple Ridge’s public art steering committee, Holy Wow Poets and Golden Ears Writers have organized a Community Public Art Contest: Tweetable Sidewalk Poetry, to recognize the district’s 140th birthday. The contest is open to anyone who can share a poem in English that shows why Maple Ridge is special.

Unlike their counterparts in Coquitlam who sparked an uproar over an $800,000 bonus for their chief, the Katzie First Nation paid its band council modest salaries last year, according to financial statements posted online. Available publicly for the first time, the information follows the passage of the First Nations Financial Transparency Act in 2013, which requires aboriginal bands to publish audited
financial statements of salaries and expenses online within 120 days of the end of the fiscal year. The Pitt Meadows-based Katzie First Nation has a membership of 545, with 313 living on reserve and 226 living off the reserve. Its current chief Susan Miller earned $16,500 in remuneration over five and a half months and logged $1,793 in expenses. Miller was elected chief last November after former Chief Ed Pierre resigned. She was acclaimed in January for a two-year term. Although Miller welcomes accountability she believes the way the new act was forced upon First Nations was heavy handed. “Transparency is important,” said Miller, adding that chief and coun-
cil are firstly accountable to the Katzie people. “This new legislation was created without any consultation with First Nations. We should be accountable to our own people and not to the Canadian taxpayer, particularly when it comes to our own source revenue.” Katzie First Nation councillors earned between $33,000 and

The poem must be appropriate for public viewing and be no longer than 140 characters, the maximum allowed in a tweet. “With tweets being 140 characters and the (district’s) anniversary being the 140th, it kind of melded together really easily,” said district arts manager Yvonne Chui. “Social media certainly has become such an important communications tool for so many people and it’s not going away.” The vinyl, no-slip, UV-protected material that will be used for applying the winning poems to sidewalks NEWS was carefully researched by contest organizers, Chui explained. The 3M product can last between three to five months before it starts to fade. The fact that the poems will last for a few months but not permanently was appealing to contest organizers as they hoped this year’s contest will serve as a pilot project for contests to come, said Chui. “Next year, perhaps a new set of sidewalk poems will be unveiled.” Participants cannot submit more than three poems and must be current or past residents of Maple Ridge. Up to 10 poets will be selected from the three categories of children, youth and adults. Winners will have their poems installed on district sidewalks, and their names and biographies will be featured on the project website.
Poems must be sent to submissions@ mapleridge.ca by midnight, Sept. 2. Winners will be contacted by Sept. 8, and a finalist announcement will be made at the 140th birthday celebrations in Memorial Peace Park, Sept. 13. Although plans for celebrating Maple Ridge’s anniversary have not been finalized, staff and council have already indicated the event will be a fun, family affair that captures the colourful history of Maple Ridge and fosters a renewed civic pride. The two-day free event in the park will begin with an official early evening announcement and musical entertainment on Sept. 12. That will be followed by an all-day celebration that will include the Haney Farmers Market and the Maple Ridge Museum and Community Archives.

lison Redford resigned her seat as an Alberta MLA recently. She may be taking the Alberta Progressive Conservatives out the door with her — polls show that the party is in rough shape, just two years after Redford took it to an historic victory, in an election where the PCs had been behind in the polls. The PCs are long in the tooth — they have been in office since 1971, under six premiers. They have benefited from the Alberta preference of keeping one party in power for long stretches, until the public eventually tires of them. The Social Credit Party, which preceded the PCs, was in power for 36 years. The PCs are now in year 43. The reason Redford resigned as premier in March, and now as MLA, was her spending habits. She used government aircraft for personal and party business, and it has recently come out that her staff would book fictional passengers so she didn’t have to share the private jets with anyone — that is, her own MLAs. Redford was taken down by the spending of $45,000 to attend Nelson Mandela’s funeral last December in South Africa. Redford worked for the UN for years and knew Mandela, but when offered a seat on a plane taking Prime Minister Stephen Harper and others to the funeral, decided to go business class on her own. She took arrogance and entitlement to a new level, one rarely seen anywhere else in Canada. In a report on her spending habits, AuditorGeneral Merwan Saher wrote, “How could this have happened? Farm changes a leap forward VICTORIA – The B.C. government’s intentions for the Agricultural Land Reserve have been clarified by a public consultation that proposes new commercial and industrial uses on farmland. Political watchers may recall that this was the hill the NDP was B.C. Views prepared to die on this Tom Fletcher spring. It was going to be a farmland looting spree for right-wing property developers and all hope of “food security” would be dashed. As I attempted to explain at the time, the changes have little or nothing to do with ALR exclusions. Now a discussion paper poses a series of questions, some of which illustrate the need to bring farmland regulations up to date. The first one deals with restrictions on retail sales, a case study in arbitrary state control. There is a strict maximum floor space. A minimum one half of retail sales must be produced on that farm. Food packing, preparation and processing are similarly restricted. This requires multiple duplicate operations of questionable viability. It brings to mind Mao Tse Tung’s Great Leap Forward, where farmers all had little iron
smelting furnaces out back to make tools. But I digress. “Amongst other things,” the discussion paper says, “lessening the restrictions on on-farm processing could allow the establishment of abbatoirs (large, small or mobile) on farms, to serve surrounding cattle, game or poultry farms.” Then there’s cheese, fruit juice and even medical marijuana products. And did you know that wineries and cideries are allowed on farmland but breweries, distilleries and meaderies aren’t? (Mead is made from honey, and doesn’t have to be drunk from a bronze mug while wearing a horned helmet.) Now that we’ve discovered that breweries don’t have to be giant urban industrial plants producing mediocre lager that all tastes the same, possibilities abound. On-farm wine and cider sales have similarly quaint retail space and product origin restrictions. The government proposes to allow sales of products not made on site, as long as they’re made in B.C. This could make more local retail beverage co-ops viable. Or it could spawn a wave of unregulated rural liquor stores that create chaos on country roads. You decide. On a more serious note, there are a couple of questions about changes to the newly created “zone two,” the Interior, Kootenay and North regions. One repeats the government’s intention to open up non-farm use rules to allow
certain oil and gas service functions on farmland. This is to reflect the reality already on the ground in the northeast. What other non-farm activities it may entail is not yet known, as the consultation and regional meetings continue until Aug. 22. There are proposals to bypass the Agricultural Land Commission for certain kinds of farmland subdivision in zone two. These are where the subdivided parcels are a quarter section (160 acres) or bigger, or where they are divided by a road or waterway. And finally there are proposed exemptions from ALC scrutiny of leases, to allow “intergenerational transfer,” so retiring farmers don’t have to plead for state permission to remain on their own property. Another exemption would “encourage the use of otherwise unfarmed land by existing or new farmers.” NDP agriculture critic Lana Popham, who circulated a photo of herself with a samurai sword in a theatrical “Kill Bill 24” campaign, continues to insist that these changes open up 90 per cent of ALR land for “development.” It’s a hypocritical as well as a misleading statement, since a portion of her own Saanich farm property is rented to a successful craft gin distillery. THE NEWS/letters Homeless number getting ‘crazy’ Editor, The News: People need help but the amount of homeless people in Maple Ridge is getting crazy. There is not a day that goes by that I don’t see somebody doing a drug deal in front of my house. It continues to get worse and the district needs to do something about it. We have been told many times by police to call if there is something suspicious happening. We do and are told, “Sorry, but there isn’t anything we can do about it.” The Alouette Addictions Services on Lougheed Highway was the best thing put in. The people there are great. The Salvation Army’s Caring Place on the other hand, needs to go. You cannot tell us all the people we see on the streets of Maple Ridge are from here. We shouldn’t be scared to walk on our own street. To the police and district: something needs to be done now. Fears of another campground Editor, The News: Congratulations to Maple Ridge council and Chances Maple Ridge, (Great Canadian Gaming Corp.) These two organizations, well known for bringing “good” things to Maple Ridge, have put their heads together and come up with a way to rid our community of a nasty bit of forest between 225th and 227th streets. (The News, Aug. 8) This forest provides shelter to bears, cougars, coyotes, deer, racoons, and countless birds. Once completed, most of those dangers to society will be replaced by a campground for transients, thieves and homeless people. Now that’s what I call progress, in tune with the present and past “successes” of Maple Ridge councils (e.g. marijuana farms and pot retail outlets, the Northumberland Court rubble lot, no significant shopping centre, gravel pits, prison facilities, poor transit, no schools in or adequate access to Rock Ridge and Silver Valley, closing businesses, etc.) Most readers are familiar with the “improvements” brought to the lives of taxpayers on Carshill Street and Cliff Avenue with the collaboration of Maple Ridge council, the Salvation Army’s Caring Place and Fraser Health’s drug

Residents concerned about quiet ravine.
Those bleeding hearts out there who believe I’m being unnecessarily down on the less-fortunate of our populace should offer their front and back yards for itinerant camping by posting their addresses at The Caring Place. This little urban forest is bounded by Lougheed Highway, Royal Crescent, Brickwood Close, 225th and 227th streets and by 116th Avenue. It is about three quarters surrounded by homes, seniors’ condominiums and townhomes. Google Maps shows it as green space. The part being “improved” is the northern half. The public may access it near the intersection of Lougheed Highway and 227th Street. All other access is by trespassing through private property. Thankfully, the southern half of the forest is private property and not subject to “improvement.” I request the District of Maple Ridge reconsider making a public nuisance by destroying this forest. It’s not a good idea. You’re creating a monster. It won’t be your monster to deal with, Mr. Mayor: it’ll be the hundreds of people living around the forest who have to deal with it. Aboriginal Affairs stressed the Transparency Act was put into place to allow First Nation members to access financial data of the bands (about two thirds of the country’s bands failed to meet the July 29, 2014, deadline under the Transparency Act). “First Nations community members will not have to request the information through Band offices, but still have the option to do so,” said minister Ber-

Maple Ridge’s Asante Centre is doing groundbreaking work in the field of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, with the new program Through an Aboriginal Lens. While centre’s main goal is to support people who suffer from the disorder, getting people to put themselves through the assessment process can also be challenging. An assessment is a tough and trying time for young people and their families, said Allison Pooley, program director for Through an Aboriginal Lens. It’s not always easy for a family to accept that alcohol consumption during pregnancy may have harmed a family member. Through An Aboriginal Lens is a way to help First Nations youth and their families get through that. “We’ve noticed for a long time that the families coming through that program are complex and have high needs,” she said. “They deserve more support to come through what is a very stressful process. Coming through for an assessment is anxiety producing and challenging in many different ways.” An assessment has three components:

and tell people what’s going on with them.” Because the pilot program comes out of a partnership with the Native Courtworker and Counselling Association of B.C. it is focused on aboriginal youth, but Cooley emphasized all cultures will benefit. “This is an aboriginalspecific project because there is a need there, but FASD is not an indigenous concern,” said Cooley. “It’s something we’re all working on and need to be aware of. “This is not only for the youth themselves, it impacts the family, the community, society at large – everybody,” said Jardey. “That’s our future … our children. “One of the big purposes of this level of support is helping people see that it doesn’t have to be like a life sentence,” added Cooley. “There’s so many people with FASD who can be and are successful … that we can help other people aspire to be that as well.”

Getting more families and individuals through the process is the goal. “So many families tell us ‘Yeah that was really hard, but I’m still glad that I did it,’ partially for the connection to services they would not be able to get otherwise, but also for an understanding of the person’s needs.” The pilot program is expected to lead to more ways to help people. For example, the Asante Centre has done an assessment for a person in his mid 60s. It’s the only place in B.C. that serves adult FASD clients. “A lot of positive changes can still happen for adults. We’ve had people that have been homeless for 30 years, and get their first housing since they were 16.” A simple diagnosis can be a game-changer for adults. “It’s partly the connection to services, and partly being able to understand themselves,

Jenna Light didn’t know much about the country her grandfather fought in between 1950 and 1953. “South or North Korea was not really on my radar before this trip,” Light admits after visiting South Korea in June. Light was part of a group of relatives of Korean War veterans from New Zealand, Australia, Thailand and Ethiopia, and took part in a Youth Peace Camp that happens twice a year in June and July. For a week, delegates, were paired with Korean roommates, heard lectures, toured the country and learned about Korea’s history as well as current issues. The camp was organized to show appre-

Light says the highlight of the trip was visiting the demilitarized zone that divides the totalitarian North Korea from the democratic Republic of South Korea. Army Cadet Summer Training Centre. Donaldson is a member of 1838 Royal Canadian Army Corps (Maple Ridge Legion, Branch No. 88). She attended the three-week basic marksmanship instructor course in Vernon, where cadets learned the principles of accurate rifle shooting, and the skills necessary to conduct a summer biathlon. Cadets were also taught the marksmanship techniques needed to improve
their results in competitions. During each summer, more than 1,200 army, sea and air cadets from across western Canada will spend up to six weeks in Vernon, expanding the training they receive at their home corps, developing new skills and forming new friendships. The Cadet Program is a national program for youth aged 12-18 interested in participating in a variety of activities while learning about the sea, army and air activities of the Canadian Armed Forces.

Metro Vancouver mayors have voted to send two of their to sit as paid directors on the appointed and unelected TransLink board, reversing their previous rejection of the offer by the province. The chair and vice-chair of the TransLink mayors’ council – North Vancouver District Mayor Richard Walton and New Westminster Mayor Wayne Wright – will take the two new seats on the professional board, which now grows to 11 directors. Joining the board will give the two mayors more insight and perhaps some influence, but not the restoration of full control over TransLink’s budget by elected reps that Metro mayors have demanded. It was that insistence as well as a fear of being co-opted that led them to reject the provincial offer of two board seats in 2012. The latest changes to TransLink governance by the province last spring gives mayors control over executive pay and TransLink’s longterm vision, while the budget and operational control remains with the board. Walton said most mayors feel it’s time to take the seats and to work cooperatively with both the board and the province, which is supposed to name its own two directors in January. Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan says it’s a said mayoral directors might be lobbied by other mayors for transit upgrades in their cit-
ies, in exchange for votes to retain their lucrative positions. “It won’t be in an open debate, it will be who can persuade them to do something for them in relation to transit service in their own communities.” Corrigan also predicts Walton and Wright will be muzzled from disclosing all board deliberations. “They’re going to have to be part of the secrecy that has been the hallmark of the TransLink board since the provincial government made the legislative changes,” Corrigan said, referring to the 2008 TransLink overhaul that created the professional board and relegated politicians to approving tax hikes. Walton and Wright will be paid the same as the other nine professional directors who sit on TransLink’s board. They each collect close to $50,000 a year, depending on the number of meetings they attend. Walton, who previously described the optics of accepting extra pay as a director as “problematic” but now says he’s “indifferent” to it, did not vote on the issue during the July 29 closed-door meeting of the mayors’ council. Port Coquitlam Mayor Greg Moore said Walton has until now received $5,000 a year for his work chairing the mayors’ council and Wright got nothing as vice chair, adding directors’ pay for serving on the board will now more appropriately compensate them for the work they put in on TransLink matters. Moore said it was time to take the seats to try to “bridge the gap” with the province on issues such as the expected TransLink referendum on transit expansion, which requires a shared vision by mayors and the province.

Renaissance revival in Ridge

ennies may not be as well known as Trekkies but they are equally as devoted to what they follow. Rennies are renaissance festival followers who have opportunities to attend festivals all year round. B.C. Renaissance Festival organizer Christina Carr says almost 80 renaissance festivals are held throughout North America annually. “Florida, for example, has five festivals throughout the year,” she says. Running August 15 to 17, Rennies will descend on Maple Ridge at the Albion Fairgrounds for the annual B.C. festival. For the first time in eight years, the group has changed their B.C. location. For many years, Carr says, the festival was held in Langley but when a change had to be considered, Maple Ridge seemed like the perfect option. “We were told Maple Ridge is starting to have a great reputation as the town for fairs and festivals,” says Carr. She explains her group, which includes a cast of pirates, villagers, royalty, gypsies and jugglers, is looking forward to using the fairgrounds as it will allow for ample space when the jousting games begin.

Defined as a fight between mounted knights wearing armor and using lances, jousting was considered to be a favorite form of entertainment during the Middle Ages. Jousting, which could incorporate several forms of combat, was meant to keep knights in excellent condition for those times when war was at stake. The Clydesdales Carr’s group utilize for their festival are trained humanely and as proficient drill teams. They are her group’s breed of choice because they are so well trained. “A horse could bolt (under these circumstances) if not properly trained,” explains Carr.
Besides scheduled events, the festival incorporates scripted as well as unscripted roaming actors who engage audience members in unplanned antics. No matter what role they play, however, all renaissance festival cast members have one thing in common: “We’re always looking at what we can hide in the script so kids don’t know they’ve learned something.” Carr, for example, plays a female pirate captain who was supposedly left to die alone on a remote island until a pirate crew came and rescued her. According to Carr, many female
pirates sailed the seas and many of them were actually in charge of their ships. “One of the things we want to teach kids is women can be, and often were, in charge.” The weekend’s schedule includes jousting competitions, mounted games, pub sing-alongs, a special ceremony for the king’s arrival and scheduled performances. In addition, the festival offers an extensive concession area as well as games such as archery practice and rides for children. Tickets will be available at the gate or online at bcrenfest.com.

If you watch a performance by the Nahualli Folklore Society, get ready to travel across Mexico from north to south. Lily Cazares, one of the founding members of the troupe, is happy to take you on the journey. “Our vision is to share Mexican culture through dance and to show different faces of Mexican culture that people probably never realize ex-
isted,” says the Maple Ridge resident, who is getting ready to perform this weekend at the Latin Summer Festival in Vancouver. The name Nahualli originates from an indigenous language of Mexico called Nahuatl (Naa-Walt). It signifies an animal spirit or a transforming power that protects and guides each person from the moment of birth. “We feel this transforming power on stage as we represent Mexico to you,” Cazares explains. Nahualli Folklore Society has a wide repertoire of dances representing several Mexican states that include: Baja California, Chihuahua, Nuevo Leon,
Sinaloa, Nayarit, Guerrero, Chiapas, Colima, Jalisco, Michoacan, Huasteca Tamaulipeca, Veracruz, Yucatan among others.

Tourney kicks off Knights season The Ridge Meadows Knights kicked off another season of community football over the weekend, with the club’s annual Knights of the Round Tournament. The event was played out for atoms, pee wee and junior bantam teams at Samuel Robertson Technical. “As the first organized scrimmages most teams face this sea-
son, the tournament was a success in accomplishing exactly what it was supposed to do. All teams at every level improved their play and performance with every game,” said Knights president Mark Ogloff. “We are proud of all our teams, and how the players performed in the intense heat of the weekend.” The hometown teams also won some honours. Meadow Ridge
Gold and Blue Atom teams finished in first place and second place respectively in a five-team division that included teams from North Delta, North Surrey and Royal City. The pee wee Knights Blue and Gold teams finished second and third respectively, and the junior bantam teams were at the bottom of their five-team division, which was won by North Surrey.

The only Knights team not in action was coach Ogloff ’s midgets. The organization will not have a bantam team this year, due to a lack of numbers. With seven teams, it is still considered healthy organization. The community football regular season begins for the locals on Aug. 30, and the Knights home opener will be Saturday, Sept. 6 when all.
Ridge Meadows Burrards players were part of three B.C. minor lacrosse provincial teams that won gold medals at national championships over the weekend. There were more locals on teams that won silver and bronze. The many talented girls from Ridge were part of a huge medal haul in Ontario. The boys championships were held at Queen’s Park in New Westminster and Coquitlam Aug. 4-9 and girls were in Whidby, Ont. from Aug. 6-9. “It really showed that our players are able to play with the best in Canada,” said Burrards club president Ron Williams. The Team B.C. midget boys were most dominant of the province’s teams, winning the gold medal game over Team Alberta 14-2. Burrard Mackenzie Rope tied for eighth in tournament scoring with 12 goals and six assists in seven games. “He’s one of the most talented players in B.C.,” said Williams. His Ridge teammate Anthony Kalinich was also part of the gold medal effort, on a team that was a perfect 7-0, and scored 105 goals while allowing only seven against.

Winning the gold medal were local players Kennedy Gill, Mykhaela Johnson, Ashleigh Lesser, Jayde Meredith, Brooke Parry and Paige Bell. It was also a first national championship for their coach. Bell was the all-star for B.C. and finished sixth in tournament scoring with 12 points. “She doesn’t stop running – she’s a workhorse,” said Gill. “She leaves it all out on the floor.” Gill gave her the nickname “Showtime” after she scored the gamewinning goal in the final over Ontario. “It was a pretty special goal.”

The Maple Ridge Burrards took a lead of two games to one in their best-of-seven playoff series with the Burnaby Lakers. Game four was held last night (Tuesday) in Maple Ridge, but results were not known by press time. Burnaby took the first game 10-5. The Burrards bounced back with a home win, 11-4 in a fight-filled affair on Saturday, and then took the series lead with a 9-6 victory on Monday night in Burnaby. Game five will be played on Thursday in Burnaby, and the series returns to Planet Ice for game six, if necessary, on Saturday night at 7:45 p.m. Game three was tight. The Burrards nursed a one-goal lead into the third period, until Mitchell Bannister scored an insurance goal, and Aaron Davis put the game out

Dickson lit up Burnaby for six points in the regular season, so they won’t be happy to see him in the lineup. Both clubs were fined $1,000 by WLA commissioner Casey Cook for the game two fracas, that saw six players on each team ejected, 143 minutes in penalties to Maple Ridge and 134 penalty minutes assessed to Burnaby. Cook wrote that the fine was levied because the teams didn’t control their players, the safety of the players was compromised, and image and integrity of the WLA had to be considered. Goalie Richards got a one-game suspension for cross checking Colton Porter in the head in the first game. First-place Victoria has jumped out to a 3-0 lead on fourth-place New Westminster in the other WLA semi-final series.

Ches worked as a lobster fisherman along with his father and in 1943, during WWll, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, Unit 9CMU Ground Support Crew. In 1947 he moved his wife and son to Maple Ridge, British Columbia where he remained for 60 plus years. He also assisted in building the first steel runway in Masset, Queen Charolette Island, BC. and he worked for the Pacific Stag Lines, owned and operated a local fish retail business and finally retired after working as a Guard for the Maple Ridge RCMP. He was a lover and lifetime member of the Ham Radio Association and was proficient in Morse Code and volunteered in Search
and Rescue operations in the Maple Ridge area. He was a very talented guitarist, a man quick to laugh and tell a joke, a loving brother, father and grandfather, good friend and will be greatly missed. At Ches’ request there will be no funeral service, only a private family gathering.

Ches was born October 26, 1922 to William Burton Allen and Edna Isabelle (Stewart) of Pugwash, Nova Scotia. Ches was predeceased by his wife Marjorie Isabelle (Turnbull), son David Chesley Allen, granddaughter Anita and sister Elsie (Hunter). Survived by his son Dale Burton Allen, daughters Wendy Marilyn (Clairmont), Marina Colleen (Bromba), sisters Ethel (Hogg) and Bonnie Lynn (Williams), along with 8 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild.

Myers had a varied work life including body/paint, parts depts., mechanic and then Senco which led him to joining the movie industry in 1986, where he became the original “Tool Guy”. CHILDREN BUCHANAN, John Sylvester (Jake) Passed away peacefully early in the morning of August 6, 2014 at Ridge Meadows Hospital. The family feels great sadness at his loss. Jake was 73 years old, born in Regina, Saskatchewan on December 31, 1940. He often told stories of his younger years growing up on his Uncle Howard’s ranch in southern Saskatchewan. He attended school there as well as in Vancouver and graduated from King Edward High School. He went on to become a sheet metal journeyman, was always willing to share his knowledge of the trade with coworkers, he took pride in teaching many apprentices at the sheet metal shops he worked in over the years and in particular his last job of mentoring youth in the Pathfinder Youth Program. Jake is survived by his wife of 18 years, Patricia. His son John (Lisa), daughter Missy (Khaled) Abdel-Barr and their three children Joel, Jena and Emily; and also his children’s mother Molly. Other close family members are his sister Violet Seymour, brother-in-law Lyle Jantz, stepsons Garth (Mary) Oswald, and Colin (Melissa) Oswald and their sons Caleb and Zachary.

Following retirement, Val pursued her passion of travel, creating many memories and friendships around the globe. “When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple” and so she did, with flair.
