The provincial government and B.C. Teachers’ Federation are scheduled to resume talks tomorrow. Education Minister Peter Fassbender and BCTF president Jim Iker are both expressing optimism, saying their full bargaining teams will be present and each side will make contract presentations. Locally people say they are also optimistic, but aside from small regular rallies there isn’t much going on as people wait on the provincial situation to see what September 2 — the first scheduled day of the new school year — will bring. Kelly Wray, president of the District 69 Parent Advisory Council is currently sending parents a survey to canvas local opinion to take to a summit meeting called by the B.C. Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils for Aug. 16. “Parents are worried about September,” she said, not wanting to get into her personal opinion, saying she’d rather wait and see what her members are saying. Oceanside RCMP Staff Sgt. Brian Hunter was scheduled to provide a report to Parksville city council last night that shows incidents of crime are generally either holding at 2013 numbers or declining. Hunter’s report indicated there were 35 thefts from vehicles in 2014 up to the end of June. Over the same time period in 2013, there were 74 of these incidents. Hunter has consistently called this crime “preventable” and it’s been a point of emphasis for the detachment and its top cop. One of the only other significant changes in the number of incidents year over year was an increase in breaks-ins to residences: there were 17 in the first six months of 2014 and only eight over the same period last year. Motor vehicles accidents in the city were down to 59 in 2014 from 76 in the first six months of 2013. Parksville Idol crowns winners Saturday
Nineteen performers have made the semifinals of Parksville Idol and winners will be determined after they sing for the crowd Saturday in Parksville Community Park. Parksville Idol was developed to celebrate the theme of this year’s sand sculptures, music. The contest was open to solo, amateur singers. Amateur was defined as someone whose main income is not derived from singing, or someone who has a CD or record. The semi-finalists were determined by online vote. The semifinals are scheduled for 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Gazebo and two performers from each of three age categories will make it to the finals at 8:30 p.m., just before the fireworks. As the world marks the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War this summer, local museums are looking for memorabilia. Canada’s last veteran of that war died four years ago at the age of 109 and the last veteran in the world died a year later. Remembrance Day was started a year after the war — which ran 1914-1918 — to honour and remember those killed, but the Parksville and Qualicum Beach museums both say they have very few articles linking us to that history. “We are marking the 100th anniversary of the train station this year, and of course that became important in sending troops to the war,” said Qualicum Beach Museum manager Natanja Waddel, adding that the Qualicum Beach Inn was used as a convalescent home. She said that while the war was important to local history, the museum’s collection is very limited and they are hoping to build it up over the next four years while they mark differ-

The Parksville museum also has a few items, including some photos, a field dressing kit, a Christmas bonus tin, some shells and possibly a uniform they are currently investigating. Manager Nikki Gervais said they are working with the Vancouver Island Military Museum in Nanaimo and CFB Comox to properly identify their items and would love to hear more from anyone who has details or items related to the war that would help keep the history alive locally. Similarly, the local Legion branches have some photos and information, but say their First World War connections are very limited and they are always looking for more details about local connections to the war. In total, about 620,000 Canadians enlisted in the war, 420,000 went overseas and (according to Wikipedia) about 67,000 died in unexpectedly harsh conditions. She did say that some parents aren’t happy that the $40 a day offered by the government only covers students up to age 12, and that the daycare it’s meant to subsidize is not the same as school. B.C. finance minister Mike de Jong announced last week that parents will be invited to apply online for the subsidy if the strike extends into the school year. Union president Jim Iker responded in a news release that the offer was a “scheme to strip funding from B.C. students… (which) will not help improve class sizes, increase support for children with special needs, or provide more one-on-one time for all students.” In District 69, there has been concern about whether schools — reconfigured after four elementary schools were closed — will be ready for September, with the strike slowing work down. But Mount Arrowsmith Teachers’ Association president Debbie Morran said they stopped picketing school sites as of July 14 to
allow the district to ensure schools are ready for students. “We hope that during these next four weeks the government will agree to enter into a fair mediation process which will result in an agreement, and see us returning to work in September, with our schools renovated and ready for our students,” she said. She invites the public to join them in weekly rallies Tuesday nights at 7 p.m. in front of the Parksville Community Park and 8 a.m. Thursdays in front of MLA Michelle Stillwell’s office. B.C.’s 41,000 teachers have been on a full strike since June 17 after months of escalating job action. The last media reports had the two sides within a percentage point on wages, but still far apart on benefits and two supreme court rulings to reinstate teacher’s bargaining rights on working conditions, class size and composition. The government has characterized the teacher’s demands as unaffordable when compared with other public sector workers.

Animals galore at Coombs Fair 4H Club members from around the Island and Powell River will celebrate Saturday LISSA ALEXANDER reporter@pqbnews.com
There will be a massive presence of 4H members at this year’s Coombs Fair, thanks to a celebration happening at the fairgrounds following the event on Saturday. “Coombs Fair has been chosen to host the 100 years of 4H in B.C. celebration for region one—Vancouver Island and Powell River—so when the fair closes at five o’ clock there will be 410 or so 4H alumni and 4H everything,” said fair manager Janet Boley, a member of the Arrowsmith Agricultural Association, which hosts the fair. The 4H Club, a program dedicated to youth development, is already known for having a great presence at the fair, displaying all the projects made and raised throughout the year. There are separate classes for 4H members and their entries at the fair and the club also puts on a musical ride horse show Coombs Fair has been for the public around chosen to host the 100 noon on Sunday. years of 4H in B.C. The horse shows at celebration for the fair are usually a Region 1 big draw, said Boley, JANET BOLEY which includes an English horse show Saturday and a Western horse show Sunday, both starting with 4H in the mornings. The fair gates open at the Coombs Fairgrounds at 8 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday this weekend with indoor exhibits opening at 9:30 a.m. The event closes at 5 p.m. both days. A pancake breakfast will get things started both mornings (8 a.m. to 11 a.m.) and then people will be off to the races with numerous activities, exhibits, entertainment and more. The feature animal this year is the pig and the catch phrase: Go Hog Wild at the Coombs Fair. There will be facts and information on pigs to discover at the fair and a scavenger hunt for kids which is all pig-oriented.
There is a sanctioned poultry show happening this year at the fair with over 500 birds and the judge will be traveling here from California. Popular events include the chicken and duck races, the Ladies Nail Driving Event (4 p.m. Sunday) and new this year: zucchini races (3 p.m. both days) which will take place on a ramp borrowed form the Errington Hall. Do-Little Square is a children’s zone for both parents and kids to enjoy themselves. “Parents can sit and relax and kids can do fun stuff,” said Boley, adding that it is free. There are also bouncy castles and rides for children. The fair will mark the official opening of the centennial stage built last year and entertainers will grace the stage from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. The Wizard and the Enchantress will be roaming the grounds entertaining with magic, music and stilts, there will be a dunk tank, a pet parade and a corn maze this year. People can peruse all the entries in the exhibits which includes livestock, horticulture, baking, needle crafts, arts and crafts and much more. There will be demonstrations by the Spinners and Weavers, the Rock and Gem Club, the Needle Arts Guild and there live milk separating and honey extraction will be done. A number of local vendors will be selling their wares at the event and there will be plenty of food concessions, including the popular Tea House making homemade bunwiches and pies. Admission is $5 per adult per day or $8 for both days, $3 for students (13-18) or $5 for both days, $1 per day for children six-12 years and children five and under are free. It is $2 to park on the fairgrounds and there is free parking at the Coombs Rodeo Grounds with free shuttle service. Dogs are not allowed at the fair.

In an effort to move forward, Forward House is raising money to reconfigure their garage into a studio — to maximize its use for clients. At their annual open house last month, Forward House clients sold pieces of their own artwork to help raise money for the project. Jane Parham, a client at Forward House, sold copies of her book: a collection of personal poetry called Love, Jane. Parham said she was happy to contribute to the project especially as she’s “always loved writing” and uses the facility often. registered charitable organization is like “a drop-in centre” for high-functioning adults with mental health and/or addiction issues who have a referral from Vancouver Island Health Association. Welch said Forward House is the only organization of its kind in the Parksville Qualicum Beach area. “So often we see stigmas around mental health,” said Welch. “We want to normalize the situation for our clients.” Forward House is located in a quaint house along Hirst Street which reflects a family-like home — an intentional decision, according to Welch. “We don’t want it to feel clinical at all in here,” she said. “In society it is difficult for people seen as different to have normal interactions with others — this space is an opportunity for our clients to feel loved and cared for.” Welch said Forward House focuses

on the strengths of their clients — some clients even teach courses to others in fields they excel in such as computer programming, yoga or art. “People with mental health issues are often incredibly intelligent,” she said. “The trick is finding their strengths and encouraging them.” Forward House services up to 50 clients at a time with eight staff members and various volunteers. It is open six days per week. Clients may sign up for artistic, intellectual or recreational programs all free of charge. Welch said it will cost approximately $10,000 to renovate the unfinished garage which needs drywall, insulation, paint, new flooring and lighting. Clearing decks
I
t was about 15 months ago, and we weren’t really sure what instigated the discussion, or more accurately, the impetus behind a passionate statement released by Qualicum Beach Coun. Dave Willie. We have a better idea now, although Willie will not, cannot, and could not then, elaborate or provide details as to the origin of his concerns. It was May, 2013 and Willie sent an e-mail to The NEWS, expressing his frustration regarding what was happening behind closed doors at town hall. “Over the last 16 months, this council has endured endless hours of in-camera meetings,” Willie wrote, being careful not to provide the in-camera details. “Although many of those meetings were reasonable and the results were good for the town, in my view many were not. The sometimes endless discussions centred on important town issues that required a consensus of four of the five members of council. I believe that some of the results protected private interests more than public interests.” He made a motion at the next council meeting to direct staff “to find a method of paying out unused holidays, older than the one year to ensure a clear policy is in effect to prevent accumulation in the future. The banking of unused sick days should also be explored to see what policy exists in neighbouring municipalities. Over the last number of councils, holiday time, time given for extra hours, etc. has been allowed to accumulate with the result being hundreds of hours banked, at costs exceeding $100,000. More importantly, staff needs to take time off to enjoy with their family, friends and community. It’s also crucial that the town receive the full-time efforts of staff on a full-week basis, not reduced by banked holidays from 10 years ago.” The staff report related to that motion will be in front of council this coming Monday, which is coincidentally six days after our reporter Lissa Alexander’s exclusive story about the town paying severance, holiday pay and sick leave pay totaling more than $370,000 to two senior staffers in the past 10 months. The silver lining in all of this? The decks are being cleared of old business just before the Sept. 2 arrival of new town hall boss Daniel Sailland. — Editorial by John Harding

Letters GOING POSTAL Columnist Arthur Black’s comments in a recent column in The NEWS regarding the apparent discrimination shown toward 15-year-old Canadian Noah Kilpatrick are on point. He goes on to highlight the many derisive and discriminatory terms used in the past when referring to Italians, Chinese etc., and then, to illustrate his smug belief that somehow Canada has evolved into a superior society compared to our American neighbours, he drags out the same old, same old: health care, gay marriage, marijuana and the all time favourite, gun control. To quote: “Gun control? Wild West insanity in the U.S. while in Canada — no problem eh? We don’t Go Postal about our right to bear arms.” Ooops! He just lost all credibility by using the term “going postal?” If I were a postal worker, I would take immediate offence at being characterized and stereotyped in such a manner. OLD BOOK USES In 1993, I was a delegate to Nicaragua with Tools for Peace. One of our invitations was to help celebrate the opening of a new library. Their community was so proud: 22 books. Anybody traveling to countries that need educational resources should look into carrying humanitarian aid. When I saw books being discarded at QBES, I called on KAIROS. They contacted NGOs, asking if they would accept texts. One woman answered saying that a school for special needs children would appreciate donations. Yes, my husband and I went dumpster diving, and he delivered a few boxes up to the Foothold’s Therapy Cen-

Another lead would be sending some to Bella Bella as they lost their library in a school fire a few years ago. People teaching ESL or foreign students learning English would be grateful to have these resources. Finally, I bet there were quality photos in some books that would be great for illustration, writing, and collage work. Ideally, there should be a place for surplus book storage, even provincially, and a coordinator to dispatch to those in need. I know it takes time and making connections. SIDEWALKS NEEDED I moved to Canada in 1967 and we settled in Alberta. Next year, we decided to take our first Canadian vacation in B.C., having heard about the wonderful summer climate there, pulling an old tent trailer behind our vehicle. We had a wonderful time but I did notice the lack of sidewalks in some areas, just grass and gravel at the side of some roads, except in the cities and some housing developments. This seemed strange to me, having lived in a country where sidewalks were everywhere except in country lanes. One was even permitted to park the wheels of one side of your car on the sidewalk or pavement as they are called in Britain. After many vacations in B.C. I decided I would not like to live there as the lack of sidewalks seemed to bother me, even though the lack of was only in certain districts. Now we have been living on this beautiful island for 15 years. I walk to town down
Mill Road frequently, facing the oncoming traffic. The only pedestrians I see are going to their mailbox or to town. There is no room for sidewalks to be installed, the road cannot be less wide and I am sure people do not want to lose part of their garden to make room for a sidewalk. I fear that any wishes for safety for pedestrians and traffic should have been attended to long ago and that it is too late to make any permanent changes. VIVIEN SANSOM Qualicum Beach
DUTCH MOURNING When I turned on the morning news recently I wasn’t quite prepared to see the ceremony concerning the return of the first 40 of the victims of the MH17 air disaster. I have to congratulate The Netherlands on the dignity and respect paid to those first 40 victims, sadly laying in their caskets on their return for identification. The king and queen of The Netherlands, together with their prime minister and other dignitaries, were there paying respects, family and relatives of victims were there and rightly secluded from the media glare. At sighting of the two incoming military aircraft carrying their sad cargo, a signal was sent throughout Holland, the church bells tolled throughout the country, and even their iconic windmills had their sails fixed in ‘mourning’ position. A minute silence was held when the country literally came to a stand still. This had me in tears. I only hope that those who perpetrated this evil and wicked deed were watching, although I doubt they would really care. WE CAN STOP GROWTH
Re: ‘RDN stands with Parksville’, (The NEWS, July 15). Because of past excessive growth, the citizens of Parksville will be asked through referendum if they are in favour of borrowing monies for a new water treatment plant, which we will have to pay back plus interest. And Mike Donnelly from the RDN, makes the oft-repeated and technically incorrect statement, which seems to be a mantra of local governments: “People keep coming here and we can’t stop them so we have to do two things: prepare for those people coming to Vancouver Island and manage a water resource for the people who are already here.” Well, here’s a few things to ponder: • True, we can’t stop people from coming here, and we don’t want to. Living within limits is not a “we’re here now so pull up the drawbridge” scenario. If there are houses or other dwellings available for sale or rent, people are welcome to establish residency in our community. But if we wisely choose to set a limit on the number of people, and thus dwellings, according to what our regional ecosystems can support, and there are no dwellings for sale or rent. In other words, the region’s supporting ecosystems have reached their carrying capacity — we have no obligation to provide dwelling space for additional people who want to come here. • The Parksville-Nanoose area has apparently found a limiting factor (water) and has likely already reached or exceeded its natural, regional carrying capacity. But we don’t know that because the RDN, of which Parksville is a part, hasn’t determined what our regional carrying

Deliciously Historical capacity actually is, despite that being a criticism of the Regional Growth Strategy by many. Consider this: it wasn’t that long ago when local ecosystems provided us with abundant clean water at no cost. • When I came to this area in 1975, the population of Parksville was less than 3,400 people. Since then we’ve been told continually that we need to grow to prevent our community from dying. Parksville now has about 12,000 people, over three-fold increase. But each time our population increases — along with our taxes, because population growth always costs the existing population more — the growth that occurs never seems to be enough. When will it be enough? When our community reaches the size of Nanaimo? Victoria? Vancouver? • Will those of us currently living in Parksville get anything new for the increased taxes we’ll be paying? Will we get any more or any cleaner water from our taps than we already do? Seems folly for taxpayers to pay money to get essentially nothing they’re not already getting now. Perhaps it’s too late and we do need this new water treatment plant; VIHA thinks we do. But this seems to be simply one more example of uneconomic growth. Addicted to growth, we fail to notice that the growth our communities have experienced over the past 60 years has not ended the problems it claims to solve. As a result, there is not one community on Vancouver Island that is truly sustainable. Perhaps it’s time we took a collective look at what real sustainability means and begin improving rather than degrading our quality of life. NEIL DAWE Parksville

I just read your most interesting article on Compliance Energy’s proposed underground coal project. The article informs us that Compliance Energy has scheduled a re-submission of its mining permit application by the end of this year. Critics were quick to point out that they had missed two previous scheduled submissions in the past. Perhaps those critics might keep in mind a “Catch-22” which is faced not just by Compliance, but by virtually every company attempting to advance resource development projects on our Island and in our province. That difficulty has to do with economics. In order to obtain all the information now required by the various regulatory agencies within B.C., a company would need a host of expensive professionals such as geologists, botanists, biologists, mining engineers, metallurgists and so forth to gather the required information. However, given the enormous time lines now involved in gaining project approvals — and they are steadily lengthening — few junior resource companies have the funds to pay this array of professionals nor can they successfully access capital markets during a time when the future of their projects looks uncertain at best and high-risk at worse. Therefore, quite understandably, any unanticipated complication can easily result in a missed deadline. Before congratulating themselves, environmentalists — who also tend to be advocates for enlarged government social programs —

should question the value of placing so many obstacles in the pathway of economic resource development because it is new wealth generated from economically successful resource development which offers the best opportunity for government to find the funds necessary to create and develop those desired programs. Without economic growth, government can only accelerate program creation by the acquisition of new debt — and that is clearly a most unsatisfactory process in the long run. KOREAN WAR THANKS Recently, my father Jack Bryan received a medal from the Korean ambassador, thanking him for something that had happened 64 years ago. The medal is beautiful and the letter attached very heartfelt. What I saw in my dad’s eyes was pride that he had been part of something so important as a countries right to be free. Today we don’t think of the way war was fought 64 years ago. I want to take this time to thank all the Korean veterans (which I understand there are still many) and hope that we will be strong enough when called on to fight for freedom, everywhere. Thanks dad. City dares to donate $1,300 The City of Parksville donated a total of $1,300 during the 2013-14 school year to help local RCMP teach the internationally recognized Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program to 236 local Grade 5 or 6 school children. An annual carving event in Bowser will have a meaningful twist this year. A couple of weeks ago Oscar Moria had a serious motorcycle accident in Qualicum Bay. The carver, who lives in that area, was involved in getting the Lighthouse Country carving event started three years ago, which is now called The Art of Carving a Community. Ken Kirkby, who hatched the idea for the event, said Moria would have taken part in the event again this year but he’s now home unable to work with one broken and one severely injured arm, and his jaw wired shut. “He was a key figure in organizing this and getting this thing off the ground with us and he could use little bit of help,” said Kirkby. s!

Four carvers will take part in the event that runs from Thursday, Aug. 7 through to Sunday, Aug. 10 on the grassy area beside the Salish Sea Market. Each will have their chainsaws roaring, torches firing and tools busily carving for the public to witness. This year the carvers will also collaborate on a large carving which will be sold in some fashion at the event, with proceeds benefiting Moria. The rest of the wooden sculptures have been pre-sold to members of the community with an agreement for them to display the carving so the public can see and enjoy them. Magnolia Court is hosting the event beside the Salish Sea Market and support is coming from several businesses in the Lighthouse Community, including wood donated from Island Timberlands. The event runs from around 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

An Escalade worth the wait Cadillac recently held the introduction of its all-new Escalade in the heart of Toronto, specifically the heart of Yorkville. This upscale slice of Toronto real estate is home to spendy shops, exclusive restaurants and luxurious hotels. This is a place to be seen or be seen in a vehicle that projects the image one wants to portray. Media guests for the Escalade launch stayed at Toronto’s very first boutique hotel, The Hazelton. Yet another version of the popular Mini is out and selling for around $120. What? – Well, it is a LEGO brick replica of the original Cooper Mk VII, produced between August 1997 and July 1998. That was the last generation of the original very mini-Mini, which was soon replaced by the Mini on steroids that BMW now produces very profitably. Interestingly, the price tag for the beautifully crafted “toy” is about the same as I paid for my used 1966 Mini Countryman Mark II back in 1974. The LEGO version bears many authentic details, from the classic green and white color scheme with white wing mirrors and racing stripes. When I got mine, it had authentic woodworm in the bits that made it look like a mini Brit version of the Woodies that were so popular on this side of the Atlantic at the time. Dad suggested we strip out the wood but the garage guy thought the whole darn thing might fall apart if we did. Oh, brother! My dad, as a model plane painter of some repute, bought a few cans of paint and carefully painted the wood black. Then he hand painted the rest of the

Artists take to the gardens at Milner

Enjoy an inspiring and relaxing weekend among artists with Milner Garden’s Art and Photography in the Garden event. This year there are 26 local artists who will be painting, sketching, carving, and photographing Aug. 9 and 10, the most artists the event has ever seen. “We had a really good number of applicants and there was a great number of quality artists we’re happy to make some more room,” said executive director at Milner Gardens, Geoff Ball. The long-running event attracts so many artists because it’s a beautiful setting and visitors to the garden’s thoroughly enjoy seeing them work, Ball said. Artists this year include Dan Gray, Eunmi Conacher, Randy Hall, Michael and Els Schutte and Greg Swainson. There will be live music performed by local musicians from noon to 4 p.m. each day and there will be a silent auction with art donated by the attending artists. Proceeds from the auction will support programs at the gardens. The Mid Island Floral Arts Club will have intriguing surprises around the gardens and the Vancouver Island University Visual Arts Program will have The Enchanted Steampunk Gnome Village up for people to observe. The tearoom will be open early, at 11 a.m. for visitors to enjoy tea, scones and other delights.

In 1989 The Wealthy Barber (David Chilton) told readers “to look for (mutual) funds with a long-term track record; to make sure that the team who created the success was still running the show; to emphasize consistency by looking for funds that did well in both bear and bull markets; and to stay away from fad funds, focusing instead on value-oriented, disciplined management teams.” Now that nearly 25 years have passed, let’s have a look and see how this approach has worked out. Not so well, I’m afraid.
To his credit though, he concedes this in the sequel The Wealthy Barber Returns (2011). In his words: “I’m forced to admit that funds matching those criteria over the years have collectively underperformed the market. What’s worse, some of the management teams in whom I was most confident have posted the weakest returns. It’s frustrating, but past long-term performance has proven to have virtually no correlation to future performance.”
Still it’s a popular strategy to use past performance as an emotional button when promoting mutual funds. But as hopeful investors flock to the successful funds, cash levels grow, often at the most inopportune times: when markets are high. This forces the fund manager to make a choice: buy high, or sit on cash and wait for opportunities. Waiting can be costly though, as market timing frequently backfires, not to mention the fact that idle cash in a mutual fund is still subject to fees.
It is no secret that mutual funds are having a tough go of it lately, as a growing number of commentators, advisors, and investors look for alternatives. Exchange-traded funds, for example, have grown in popularity in recent years with their promise of near market-matching returns. Indeed the Wealthy Barber makes a case for these in his 2011 book The Wealthy Barber Returns. But ironically proponents of exchange-traded funds often still use past performance to make their case. It can be a compelling case, depending of course on which numbers you look at. According to Morningstar, over a 10 year period only 14 Canadian mutual funds have outperformed the iShares S&P/TSX 60 Index Fund (symbol XIU). However, let’s look at what has happened since 2011 -- a period during which the Canadian stock market has averaged only 4.36% (based on 3-year returns to November 30, 2013). By having the flexibility to underweight the weaker sectors, the number of Canadian equity funds that have bested the XIU has grown from 14 to over 200, with 57 of these actually doubling the XIU.

Ira plays Errington
Live at the Farmers’ Market Catch some fine folk music this Saturday, Aug. 9 at the Errington Farmers’ market, as Nanaimo’s Ira Pelletier takes the stage. Pelletier has become a mainstay of the island bluegrass and folk festival scene. He is known for his mandolin skills but is equally adept at the guitar. Pelletier was the founder, mandolinist, and chief songwriter of the bluegrass/ newgrass band Skagway and has played numerous times at the Lighthouse, Coombs, Sooke and Chemainus bluegrass festivals, and at the Islands Folk Festival. Pelltier has co-produced and recorded two CDs with Skagway, and one with guitarist Ed Lee, as well as playing mandolin on many recording sessions for other artists. He makes his home on an old dairy farm in Nanaimo with his wife and son. Pelltier will play from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. Aug. 16 the Rivals will perform at the market during the same time slot, followed by Westerly on Aug. 23, who are sisters from Errington. —NEWS Staff/Submitted by Gina Thomas

A soap box derby for zucchinis with wheels is just one of the many events taking place August 16 for Hi Neighbour Day. On August 9 at 11 a.m. a new and improved zucchini race track will be put to the test at the Errington Farmers Market. Bob Herbison who is one of the organizers of the annual fundraiser in Errington said the new ramp now has room for four racers at once instead of two as well as a jump. He said there will be a finish line tape to determine the winner instead of the longest distance achieved.

DENNIS (DENNY) COUND July 24, 1944 - July 22, 2014
Dennis Joseph Cound (Denny) passed away peacefully the morning of July 22nd at St. Michael’s Hospice in Burnaby, BC with his two sons, Chris and Adam by his side. Originally from Montreal, he spent his younger years travelling through the U.S. and onto Vancouver and eventually ending up in Parksville, BC. He was predeceased by his mother, Evette, father, William Cound, brothers Billy and Richard. He is survived by his brothers Frank and Bobby, and sister, Anita. Sisters-in-law, Linnea and Linda, and mother to his sons, Rachel. Nephews Shannon, Dennis, Jimmy, Michael and Peter. Nieces Mariko and Tammy. There is just simply not enough room here to describe the crazy, creative, adventurous, heartfelt life that you lived. Thank you for teaching me to always think outside the box, Dad. Not only are you missed and loved by your family and friends, but everyone you’ve ever laughed and smiled with. Breathe comfortably.

Machete’s new fight approach Marco Viedas shifts training game plan T YSON TAYLOR sports@pqbnews.com
After his last fight, Marco “Machete” Viedas was looking for ways to improve his fight game so he wouldn’t find himself on the losing end again. Viedas lost his last fight against Tylor Nicholson by a rear naked choke and it was his first loss of his MMA career. For Machete, it was a loss that he wasn’t expecting and he’s looking to come back better than the last time. “It was a tough loss but I’ve learned a lot from it and I’m working hard to improve my game,” he said. “We’ve come up with a game plan that I think is going to allow me to max out my skills in training before I step back in the cage for the next fight.” Machete and his team have decided to take a different approach to his fights. Instead of working himself ragged on top of having to diet to make weight, Viedas has incorporated his newest sponsor in to his game plan, which will see him take a three to four month approach leading up to a fight. This approach will allow Viedas to utilize his time before a fight to his very best, allowing him to put it all together before taking a fight. “We think this is a good approach to take and I like the way it’s set up,” Machete said. “Instead of it involving trying to jam in as much training, dieting and everything else that goes with it between the time I take a fight and the time the fight happens, we
can get all the training and dieting done before I even have a fight. That way I can just maintain once we have the fight and fine tune things leading up to it.” Mark Urqhuart, the owner of Body Basix, has stepped in to be his strength and conditioning coach, helping him work through things from working out to assisting with a meal plan to help him make weight for his future fights. It’s something that Viedas is excited about and looking forward to. “I’m really excited to add Mark to my team,” he said. “He’s helped us out a lot already and some of the things we’ve gone over, I didn’t even know were happening with my body and all the training I’ve been doing so far. So it’s nice to have someone with his level of expertise as a part of my team.” A team that includes Island Surf Co., Siege Consulting, Ecstasy Audio and Riptide Graphics, the addition of Body Basix to the fold brings his total sponsors to five and this new direction for Viedas will see him be able to prepare as best he can without having to stress about cutting weight before his next fight. “It’ll be good for me, not having to worry about it,” Viedas said. “I won’t have to worry about cutting weight and doing it all in a few weeks. I can take three or four months and really make the most out of the time to train and get better.”

Parksville’s Darren “Bearclaw” Berrecloth is back on his bike after an injury in early July sidelined him for a month. After returning from a competition in Europe, Berrecloth was back training on the hills and clipped his foot on a rock during a ride, breaking his big toe. “Having a break always sucks but luckily we had some time in between events,” Berrecloth said. “I’m all healed up and ready to go here before Crankworx in Whistler, so it’s going to
be all good. It feels good to get back on the bike again though.” Back on the bike and preparing for Crankworx in Whistler, Bearclaw has also been spending his time preparing the course at Mount Washington for the annual installment of the Bearclaw Invitational. Running Aug. 21–23, the invitational has been added to the Red Bull Freestyle Mountain Bike Diamond series, which consists of five events that the world’s best freestyle riders compete in. “The course is looking real good, it’s coming along nice,”
he said. “I’ve been able to make adjustments to a couple of the spots on the course but other than that, it’s just been getting a few tweaks here and there.” The event started in 2006 and ran for two years but was put on hiatus without a “home.” Mount Washington has been home since 2009, bringing in the best of the best for what is being called the “riders’ favourite” due to the relaxed vibe and picturesque setting. “It’s a great course and a good contest,” Cam Zink said. “It’s put on by one of the best in the world so you know what is
ahead for you.” Berrecloth is in Whistler this weekend and has been on provincial TV talking about the event. Running for 10 years, he has been a major name and has seen it evolve over the years. “The course is in really good shape, the guys have done a great job setting it up,” he said. “I’ve been there since the start of it all and seeing the younger guys come up and setting the bar higher each year, it’s great to see it happening.” Berrecloth has also lent his expertise building the course in Whistler. It’s something he
has become quite familiar with, setting up his course on Mount Washington and being able to lend a hand when it comes to improving things for the riders. “A good, smooth riding course is what we look for. The less we can be on the brakes, the better the course is.” “We’re basically looking for something that’s going to give us optimum flow without having to worry about hammering on the brakes at all. Good speed and a good ride through the whole course is really key to setting up a great course for a competition.”

Former Ballenas Secondary quarterback Liam O’Brien and the Vancouver Island Raiders were back on the gridiron last weekend, picking up their first victory this season with a 39–9 thumping of the Westshore Rebels of Victoria. The first game of the “Island rivalry” saw the Raiders taking it to the Rebels from the coin toss. O’Brien picked up where he left off after the first week of action, settling in behind center and throwing for three touchdowns on the day. He went 13–22 passing, racking up 249 yards in
the air to bring his total to 555 in just two games, good enough for second in the league. Dustin Rodriguez was all over the field as well, doing a bit of everything to help the cause. D-Rod broke off a run for 34 yards, hauled in two passes 50 yards and was used as the punter as well for the VI Raiders, who now move to 1-1 so far this season. The Raiders are on the road this weekend against the Okanagan Sun, who are looking to rebound from a loss against the Langley Rams, who the Raiders lost to in their opening game of the season.

The Parksville Lawn Bowling Club held their annual men’s and women’s triples tournament last weekend, with the two day event showcasing some very happy winners. On the women’s side it was Cheryl Baker, Bev Beaith and Lucille Picard taking the big prize for first place in the tournament. The team of Dorothy Johnson, Susan Paterson and Jane Worel took second. Rounding out the top three was the team of Pat Goodwin, Jeanette Ferguson and Anne Gibson.

On the men’s side, it was Martin Fereday, Joe Stemler and Ken Soothill who took home first. Second went to Bob Findlay, Gil Simpson and Lucky Butterworth. In third, it was Ken Bucyk, Peter Zboyovsky and Keith Gibson. The coveted Salmon Can Trophy a.k.a. Battle of the Sexes was the finale to the weekend event. The top three men’s and women’s teams played a three end, aggregate total score minigame. There was lots of noisemaking, hooting and cheers coming from the crowd as the women attempted to get
their name on the cup after being shut out last year. Much to the disappointment of the women of the club, the guys prevailed yet again, in a wildly lopsided victory. The PLBC is hosting their Shades of Pink Tournament on August 13 in support of cancer patients in the Oceanside area. The event is slated to start around 9 a.m. with lots of bowling and fundraising for patient care. There will also be a barber on premises for anyone looking to cool off for the rest of summer with a nice, shaved head in support of cancer patients.
