A 45-year-old man died after being stabbed in downtown Maple Ridge early Saturday. The man was attacked shortly after midnight on Dewdney Trunk Road and 223rd Street. He was transported by ambulance to Royal Columbian Hospital in New West-

minster, but passed away from multiple stab wounds. The RCMP Lower Mainland Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has taken control of the investigation. Police said it is too early to discuss a motive. Friends have identified the man as Stacey Raymond King and decorated the street corner with balloons, flowers and cards. They were set to hold a small vigil for King on Saturday night. A date for his funeral has yet to be set. Golden Ears Provincial Park was once again full to capacity over the long weekend, and people are going to greater lengths and expense to enjoy a weekend of camping. There are 406 campsites at the park, and each one was full all weekend. All three day-use parking lots in the park were also full to capacity, and the park operator had to close the main entrance to the public, and turn away families wanting to cool off with a swim. “It was crazy busy,” said Liz Hall, spokesperson for park operator SSG Holdings. “People are gung-ho for camping.” It is evident how popular Golden Ears has become. Last year, people would start booking their campsites on a Wednesday, even though they didn’t plan to show up until Friday night, just to ensure they get a spot in the park. They are required to pitch a tent to hold their spot, and pay $30 per night, just to hold it. All of the sites would be booked by Thursday. But last week, some weekend campers started showing up as early as Tuesday night to get their site of choice, and by Wednesday, the campgrounds were full. Hall said there is a waiting list, which is renewed each day, and if people leave, those on the waiting

A new waiting list is made each day starting at 7 a.m., and some wouldbe campers show up at 6 a.m., lining up at the front gate, just to get on the

waiting list. She said about 40 waiting-list people managed to get a site for some part of the weekend. “Camping has become extremely popular, because it’s an affordable getaway,” Hall said.

Some 210 sites are reservable online with a credit card, but they are all booked three months in advance, and they are completely sold out within hours of booking openings. Hall said people are literally wait-

ing with their fingers over their keyboards, waiting for them to go on sale. The next “crazy busy” weekend on the calendar will be Labour Day.

Get a Clue at Meadows Maze By S teph Tro u g h ton newsroom@mapleridgenews.com

This year’s Meadows Maze is a life-sized version of the board game Clue. Co-manager Sarah Hopcott said the medium-sized maze – mapped out by GPS – is like the classic whodunit game, “only farmy.” Maze detectives have to collect clues from hidden stations to eliminate farm animal suspects as they solve the mystery of “What’s Happened to Farmer Joe,” Hopcott added. Opening Saturday, Aug. 9 and running until Oct. 19,

three new challenges are set over 8.7 kilometres of trails amongst nearly a million stalks of corn. The Hopcott farm also features a Mega Maze, a more than six-kilometre-long trail with 18 checkpoints in total, is for maze enthusiasts who have more time and want more of a challenge. Hopcott says participants rarely get lost, but that is not always the case. For these occasions, she says, the farm has a maze patrol ready to go when someone calls. “Everyone gets a map and phone number when they start,” explains Hopcott who

adds lost maze participants can just call the number and mention which checkpoint they are at. “It is recommended that people bring their cell phones with them when they come.” For preschool-aged children, the Farm Tracks Maze is recommended. Only in its second year, Farm Tracks explorers follow winding paths to locate six stations that are set up “low to the ground so kids don’t have any trouble finding what they are looking for.”. Typically, the maze takes about 20 minutes for children to complete.

Birds of Prey is a new attraction at the corn maze this year. Hopcott says the exhibit features falcons, which are used at Pitt Meadows blueberry farms to hunt and scare away the smaller birds that eat crops. Favorite attractions from the past such as a petting zoo, bee observatory, hay wagons and children’s crafts will also be showcased. Meadows Maze is ranked as one of the largest corn mazes in the Pacific Northwest and has been open to the public since 2000. Last year, the award-winning attraction brought in 13,000 corn maze fans, and Hopcott expects

Grover Telford will run for Maple Ridge council a third time. The Able Home Services proprietor ran for council in 2011 and 2008, and will try again in November. “Third time – hopefully third time lucky,” he said Tuesday. Telford made the an-

nouncement on the B.C. Day long weekend. “I’ve been running my business for 35 years and I really think it’s time for a change.” He says his business experience will help in making decisions on council and help guide how the District of Maple Ridge operates. “It’s dealing with people and knowing how to handle challenges. This is a business. We’re spending the taxpayers’ dollars.” He supports Graham

Mowatt, who’s running for the mayoralty position, and also likes what Coun. Corisa Bell has done on in her first term. “I’m backing him [Mowatt] for mayor. So we’re working together.” “I like Corisa Bell’s tough approach. She asks tough questions.” In the 2011 election, Telford finished 11th out of a field of 28 candidates. He earned 2,671 votes. In the past few years, Telford has supported Bell in trying to do something about pricey park-

ing at Ridge Meadows Hospital. Last year, council decided that it wouldn’t ask the provincial government to reduce parking charges, opting instead to ask for better signage around the parking lot telling people about the fees. Telford, though, says there could be a win-win situation, if Fraser Health were to operate its own parking lot, which could reduce parking fees. Projected yearly revenue from parking for all

of Fraser Health for 201213 was $11 million. Projected revenues from Fraser Health’s Maple Ridge parking sites for 201213 fiscal year is about $500,000, with the cost of operating these services at about $78,000. To make his point about parking at the hospital, Telford, who formed the group Perturbed Over Paid Parking, will present a petition to council in the fall with more than 2,000 names. The group has about 20 members. The petition just says

not random. RCMP have increased foot and bike patrols in the summer months to ensure the downtown core is safer. Youth resource officers, who usually work with schools, have been turned into a bike and foot patrol unit. RCMP are also working with Westridge Security. “We are getting a lot of good feedback from citizens who are saying they feel safer,” said Fleugel, adding he has instructed his officers to take a “zero tolerance” approach to any anti-social behaviour, such as open alcohol or drug use. “We are trying to get the town centre to where everyone wants it to be, which is a vibrant, safe place. We want really want to be part of its success.”

A $110,900 research project, announced by the provincial government last week, will try to determine what specific labour market training is needed in Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows and Mission. The District of Maple Ridge and Invest North Fraser have awarded a contract to R.A. Malatest and Associates to research and assess the North Fraser region’s current labour market situation, and the anticipated labour market needs for the next five years. “For example, there is no university in the North Fraser. Could there be? Should there be? That’s what we’ll look at,” said Marlyn Graziano, chair of the steering committee for

the North Fraser Education Task force. “We’re delighted to have this opportunity.” Her group is looking forward to having solid data that shows gaps in what training and education is offered. A final report will be produced by Oct. 11, identifying the top three opportunities for post-secondary, industry and business to deliver labour market training in the region, recommending specific p o s t - s e c on d ar y / vo cational training programs. Graziano said the work will offer projections. “There is a lot of discussion in the province right now about, ‘What do employers need?’” She said Jan Unwin has been consulted, and will continue to be part of the conversation. Unwin was the superintendent of the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school district, and has

gone on to work with the Education Ministry as the superintendent of graduation and student transitions. “If there’s one person who can break down silos, it’s Jan,” said Graziano. She said the three communities compromising Invest North Fraser work together because of their common goal of attracting investment and jobs.

Her group thinks of the region as a single community. “A border between communities doesn’t mean much to people who cross those borders all the time.” The funding was part of $485,000 in “labour market partnership funding,” which was announced by the Ministry of Social Development and Social Innovation last week.

Cause unknown Drowning from front

The man was located under water by a Coast Guard diver. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The B.C. Coroner’s Service is trying determine why the man drowned. He was swimming in an area that is a popular cooling-off spot in summer. Swimmers often dive off a bridge that crosses the river. “The Alouette was calm and flat,” said search and rescue manager Rick Laing, adding that the deepest parts of river are between 12 to 18 feet. The man had entered the river on the south side and was swimming across to the north side when he disappeared under water about three-quarters of the way. “It’s hard to say if this death was preventable because we don’t the circumstances,” said Laing. The man’s name has not been released. The coroner is conducting an autopsy to determine the cause of death. See related video @ mapleridgenews.com

Potholes Besides gridlock on the roads and SkyTrain, Metro Vancouver mayors and the province are stuck breathing each other’s exhaust on the path to a transit expansion referendum supposed to happen next March. The B.C. Liberal government is largely to blame because it mandated the ill-advised referendum, ordered mayors to come up with a prioritized plan – which they did – and now is balking at contributing as much to it as the mayors want. The province previously pledged to pay one third of the costs of new transit lines and a Pattullo Bridge replacement, and said it would urge Ottawa to match. The province must now spell out the total it would contribute to Metro transit expansion over 10 years. Second, the mayors must pick how they want the rest of us to pay our share. They should first abandon the existing carbon tax as a source of revenue, as there’s no way the province will part with it. And creating a new Metro-only carbon tax is little different from raising the 17-cent-a-litre gas tax, which TransLink admits is a poor mechanism that brings in less as cars get more efficient, drivers refuel out of region and residents drive less as transit improves and town centres densify. Instead, the mayors need to pick either some form of annual vehicle levy or a regional sales tax, or both, with that revenue to be replaced by road pricing over the long term. The referendum, then, should strictly be to approve the short-term source. Road or mobility pricing should not be subject to this or any future referendum. Sporadic tolling of new bridges is making toll reform inevitable and time-ofday road pricing offers big potential to ease congestion by changing drivers’ behaviour. Finally, the mayors should declare that a defeated referendum on the new source will mean the same money will come from higher TransLink property taxes, which mayors have unfettered authority to raise. The referendum would then become an either/or debate over how we, as a region, will fund an improved transit system that is critical to our collective future. – Black Press

Summertime and drinking is easy VICTORIA – The B.C. government’s move to ease liquor restrictions is undergoing its hot summer test, and music festivals are only part of it. Premier Christy Clark’s government loves its populist gestures, and as with increasing rural high- B.C. Views way speed limits, the Tom Fletcher negative effects have yet to be quantified. Free-range drinking, or removing fences from festival beer gardens, is one of the moves that will be undergoing a postmortem as communities clean up after their big summer parties. One of the biggest, the Squamish Valley Music Festival – with headline acts Arcade Fire, Bruno Mars and Eminem, – is still to come, Aug. 8 to 10. Country fans gathered over the long weekend for Sunfest in the Cowichan Valley, with the Rockin’ River Musicfest in Mission coming up next. (Another big bash next weekend is Shambhala, the popular electronic music event on a farm near Nelson, but alcohol is officially banned there and their big issue is controlling the effects of “ecstasy” and other rave drugs.) Early reviews of free-range festivals have been positive. Victoria’s Rock the Shores event went smoothly without a fenced-in area for alcohol sales. Festival organizers did create a fenced “dry” area, but I’m told

hardly anyone used it. Penticton has had its share of experience with summer bashes gone bad. For B.C. Day, it inherited the Boonstock Music and Arts festival, sent packing from a small community in Alberta after complaints of rowdy crowds and crime, so Penticton officials were understandably cautious. Boonstock organizers were refused a provincial liquor licence after struggling to arrange security and emergency services. The festival licence process is likely getting renewed attention these days. After attending the recent Calgary Folk Festival, where the beer garden was securely fenced and the capacity monitored, I’m wondering what is really achieved by these measures. Litter and empties were contained, but since under-aged festival visitors are allowed into the serving area, it’s not clear to me whether the fence was ever worth the effort. It’s unlikely that there will be riots at farm markets as a result of allowing sales of locally made beer, wine and spirits, or from relaxing rules for operation of winery tasting rooms. But there are more reforms to come. New regulations are on the way for the Agricultural Land Reserve. As it stands, farms are allowed to have a winery or cidery, but not a brewery or distillery. Expect that to be changed as B.C. and other provinces strive to develop their craft beer and spirits industry, trying to emulate the tourism benefits that have come from an expanding wine industry. One area where the B.C. government has screwed up is its minimum pricing

rules, introduced along with the overdue move to allow “happy hour” discounts in pubs. The minimum price of 25 cents an ounce for beer, 60 cents an ounce for wine and $3 an ounce for hard liquor was an effort to balance business-friendly policy with legitimate public health concern about over-consumption.

“One area where the B.C. government has screwed up is its minimum pricing rules, introduced along with the overdue move to allow ‘happy hour’ discounts in pubs.” But the minimum beer price prompted protests from a few watering holes that had been selling pints or jugs of beer for slightly less. Some media made a big deal of this, and the government over-reacted to this tempest in a beer stein with an illthought-out cut in the minimum price to 20 cents an ounce – for beer in jugs only. The pub industry was not impressed with this bit of knee-jerk populism. Encouraging beer jug sales makes it difficult to see if someone at a table of revelers is being over-served, drinking most of the jug himself. THE NEWS/letters Consider garbage pickup instead Editor, The News: Re: Pitt cracks down on dog owners (The News, July 25). Why should I and other responsible dog owners be punished for the actions of irresponsible owners? I have my dog at the Albion sports fields most days and she is off leash for the majority of time. I clean up after my dog, and if another dog owner has their dog on leash, I put mine on her leash. Most off-leash dogs are friendly and cause no problems at all. Perhaps council should think about the taxes we pay for upkeep to the parks and consider more important issues, such as significant tax increases over the years that we have paid, and consider municipal garbage pickup and other pressing matters rather than punishing dogs and their owners. Teachers less than daycare Editor, The News: Re: Strike savings will assist parents (The News, Aug. 1). I would like to thank Finance Minister John de Jong for having accomplished a number of things for the BCTF: • his $40-a-day bribe demonstrates that government has plenty of money, but does not want to spend it on education; • the government is more concerned with punishing teachers, parents, students, and union-breaking than actually negotiating; • that, at $40 a day per child under 13, teachers deserve much more compensation than they are asking for. According to Mr. de Jong’s figures, at $40 a day per child under the age of 13, each elementary teacher should be receiving (assuming a modest class size of 28 – but there is no contract language surrounding class size anymore – $1,120 per day, $5,600 per week and at, 34 weeks in the school year, that’s a whopping $190,400 a year. The average starting salary for a Category 5 teacher is about $43,000 a year. I guess this is a clear admission that teachers are significantly underpaid since they are not paid as much per day as daycare. By the way, secondary teachers have 210-plus students. You do the math.

Disaster in making Editor, The News: Re: Strike savings will assist parents (The News, Aug. 1). Finance Minister Mike de Jong has just announced that all children under the age of 13 will receive a daycare subsidy of $40

a day if teachers remain on strike in September. So for your average class of 24 kids, this would amount to $4,800 per week for what may be an explosion of illegal unregulated daycares with unqualified staff, where kids will be warehoused to ensure maximum profitability with little or no concern for their well being. This is a disaster in the making, and some lawyers must be waiting in the wings, just licking their chops. It seems to me that this $40 per day would be a far better spent as an investment into our public education system and would go a long way in settling the current impasse with the BCTF. t was 40 years ago that a small community museum was created in a corner of the public library, back when the latter was part of the old arena complex. It represented a first success in a crusade that had been underway for decades. The first mention of a prospective museum was in 1941, when the school district decided it had no further use for the original Maple Ridge school building, which had also been used as the first municipal council meeting place. Having been built in 1876, the building likely had too many structural problems to be used. When the historical society formed in 1957, a museum was top of its wish list. Items were being collected and held in the homes of people like Ernie Adair, Ed Villiers and Gordon Byrnell.

The Golden Ears Chapter of the Vintage Car Club has been a presence at every celebration the museum has had and will join us again on Aug. 10th with an assortment of beauties. For a time, the St. Andrews heritage church building was the focus of attention, but for a number of reasons, that plan fell through. During the decade that the museum spent in the library, being manned by curators Francis Sinclair, Daphne Sleigh and Sheila Nickols, the former brickyard buildings came to the attention of the Maple Ridge

Historical Society. On Aug. 8, 1984, with much fanfare and a community celebration, the museum moved into the former brickyard manager’s house overlooking the Haney Bypass. Our partner in the building from the beginning has been the Dewdney-Alouette Railway Society, whose diorama is a wonder to behold. Long-time

It is now 30 years later and next weekend, on Aug. 10, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. there will be a 40th birthday celebration for the museum and all the ‘history makers’ who have contributed so much to its development. Plan to join us for historical displays, musical entertainment, free tours of the museum – where nearly all the displays are new – and, of course, birthday cake. Food vendors will also be on site. DARS members will also be present to show off their diorama and the 1944 caboose. At 2:30 p.m., Gary Comeau and the Voodoo Allstars will take the stage with their New Orleans style rockin’ roots and blues. Remember to bring blankets or lawn chairs for the concert. The other big celebration of the day is all about this: Nickols has been writing the “Looking Back” column for the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows News since 1987. At the birthday event, we will have copies of our first volume of columns from 1987 to 1991, with more information and photos added to each column from materials that have been collected for the community archives in the years since. The columns cover a wide range of topics, from celebrations to buildings to businesses to individual family stories. Many columns include material from conversations with pioneer residents who are no longer with us or are about buildings that are now fading memories. Nickols will be at the event signing copies, so come and get them, hot off the presses. Alisa’s Wish gets federal funding Centre for victims of abuse and violence By M o ni s ha M ar tin s mmartins@mapleridgenews.com

A Maple Ridge centre that helps children and youth who are victims of abuse has secured funding to operate until 2016. Alisa’s Wish Child and Youth Advocacy Centre officially opened its doors last week, although it has been operating for the past year. The centre is named for Alisa – who at five years old was sexually abuse by her father. When Alisa revealed her secret to her mother, there was no centralized place in Maple Ridge or Pitt Meadows where victims of such abuse could get help. Alisa’s Wish coordinator Camia Weaver said Alisa’s journey was an exhausting series of running to and from interviews, appointments, meetings, court attendances and therapy sessions – all of which took an additional toll on Alisa and her family. “The prosecution and recovery process for a young victim of violence should not cause additional trauma to a child and family already suffering the

unimaginable,” she added. The philosophy behind the development of Alisa’s Wish is to reduce that trauma, and provide immediate, comprehensive, and ongoing support for a child and family, as long as they need it. The centre is the result of more than two years of collaboration between Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Community Services, RCMP, Ministry of Children and Family Development, Act 2 Child and Family Services, local school district, Cythera House Transition Society, victim services and courts. Based in downtown Maple Ridge, Alisa’s Wish provides a safe, family friendly environment where police can conduct interviews. The centre’s child and youth advocate helps families access the services and support they need to recover from trauma, working with clients as young as four. The hope for the future includes moving to a larger space, raising staff levels, developing a volunteer corps to meet transportation and some other needs to clients, potentially co-locating some services, developing collaborative trauma-informed medical examination and treatment within the community, and expanding public education and information services to the communities.

olding a concert to raise money for the Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation just makes sense for James ‘Buddy’ Rogers, who can still recall trips to the Maple Ridge facility, where doting doctors and nurses treated broken bones from childhood accidents. “Three of my four daughters were born there,” says Rogers, a Juno nominee who will be seeking a seat on Maple Ridge council this year. The hospital has always “been there for him” and his family. To be held at Memorial Peace Park on Aug. 10, admission for the family concert will be by donation. In addition to Rogers performing, local blues acts James Thorhaug, Steve ‘Mud Dog’ Sainas, Steve Hanson and EVK will be on the roster. The Maple Ridge Lions Club will have a food concession in the park and crafts for children will also be available. Making special concert appearances will be two youth bands playing 20-minute sets, as well as Rogers’ two oldest daughters, seven-year-old Eliot and nine-year-old Quinn, who will sing with their dad on stage. “Everything I do is music,” says

Rogers, adding his daughters could not help but take part in performing. Even his second youngest is getting into the groove. “They’ve been singing forever. Even my two-year-old is starting to pick up her pink guitar,” says the proud dad. Although being a dad, planning shows, producing records and a fulltime job as director of admissions at the Pacific Audio Visual Institute in Vancouver keeps him busy, Rogers still wants to be more involved with

the community. Once his August concert is over, Rogers will get more active again planning his Maple Ridge council campaign. With a YouTube campaign song built around his Your Voice Your Vision slogan, Rogers announced his interest in having a seat at the council table back in May. At that time, Rogers indicated he wanted to see a better growth and development plan for Maple Ridge. “With all the urban sprawl that’s happening, I just don’t feel there’s

much thought going into the demand on schools, fire and police and where that money’s going to come to pay for it,” he said. “Homeowners are just on the hook for everything and I just don’t think people’s pockets are deep enough to continue with that path.” For years, Rogers says, he has wanted to be apart of his hometown’s political scene. “Fifteen years ago, I was discussing the idea of running for council,” he recollects. If elected, Rogers says he has no issue with allowing himself to be guided by public opinion on community issues. “Regardless of my feeling on something, I’m willing to vote for the majority.” Following on the heels of his 2012 critical album success with the release of My Guitar’s My Only Friend, Rogers says he will get to work on producing another album in November, regardless of the outcome of the fall civic election. In the meantime, he will practice and plan for his Sept. 6 show at the Royal Canadian Legion in Maple Ridge. Among special guests joining him will be legendary Powder Blues guitarist Tom Lavin.

Jazz concert at Westacres to build the future Jaclyn Guillou and her quintet to perform Aug. 14 Fresh from her appearance at the 2014 Festival International de Jazz de Montreal, Jaclyn Guillou and her talented quintet will play an intimate concert in Maple Ridge next week. A collaboration with the Bergthorson Community Music Education Performance Society, the evening will also create an opportunity for young aspiring jazz musicians to perform. In 2009, Guillou was the recipient

of a CBC Galaxie Rising Star Award after her very first performance at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival and has been setting good stride since then. She has toured throughout Europe, Canada and the United States and performed at some of the most recognized jazz clubs, festivals and cities with shows at Yoshi’s in San Francisco, the Birdland Jazz Club, Rataplan in Belgium, L’Inoui in Luxembourg, Yardbird Suit and the now-defunct Cory Weeds’ Cellar Jazz Club in Vancouver.

Guillou has had the pleasure of studying with some of the world’s best jazz singers which include American vocal luminaries Nancy King, Jay Clayton and Sheila Jordan. In addition to her very hectic performance schedule, Guillou is also is a vocal instructor at the Bergthorson Academy of Musical Arts, based in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. Stephens is a recent graduate of the University of Manitoba holding a bachelor’s degree in vocal performance. She has been accepted into the prestigious Masters of Art in Musical Theatre at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Stephens said the school does travelling auditions world-wide and only accepts up to 20 students a year for the program. She’s organized a fundraiser to help with the high cost of tuition and living expenses. Stephens’ passion for “non-operatic theatre” was ignited while reluctantly taking a musical theatre course in university. Her favorite roles include Chava in Fiddler on the Roof, Sandy in Grease and Potipher’s Wife in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. The concert will feature songs from Frozen, Les Misérables, Beauty and the Beast and many more Broadway musicals.

If it’s true that defence wins championships, then the Maple Ridge Burrards should get an edge over the Burnaby Lakers in their first round, best-of-seven playoff series. The Western Lacrosse Association post-season begins tonight in Burnaby for the Burrards, and is back in Maple Ridge on Saturday, 7:45 p.m. at Planet Ice. Anyone giving the edge to Ridge would have to ignore the obviously better record that the second-place Lakers put up in the regular season, when they went 11-7, compared to the 9-8-1 season of the third-place Burrards. Burrards general manager Daren Fridge said games between the two teams are always close, and he expects that to continue in the playoffs. Their first game was a 12-8 Burrards win on June 15. They met again on June 20, and the Lakers won 10-8 in overtime. Their last meeting was an 8-7 Lakers win on July 10.

The Maple Ridge Burrards begin a best-of-seven playoff series against the Lakers tonight in Burnaby, and host Saturday at 7:45 p.m. This series will turn on just a few key plays that make the difference in each game. That’s why WLA playoffs is a brand of hard-hitting lacrosse with cranked-up intensity. “The aggression and tenacity in the playoffs is higher,” said Fridge. “You’ve got to earn your time and space. “It [the series] will have its moments of nastiness,” he predicts. The Lakers have to be given the nod as the better offen-

sive team – they averaged 8.7 goals per game, compared to 8.3 by the Burrards. Dave Stevens led the Lakers in regular season points with 58, which was down from 81 last season. He enjoyed a four-goal game against the Burrards. Next was Casey Jackson with 54 points, who racked up 14 points in three games against Ridge. And Robert Church, with 51 points, could be the most dangerous player, according Fridge.

The Burrards had two players in the league’s top 10 scorers. Riley Loewen scored 56, with 26 goals, to lead the Burrards, which was good for seventh in the WLA. Jarrett Davis scored 51 points, which tied him for 10th. The series could turn on the eventual return of the Burrard’s Curtis ‘Superman’ Dickson, who is expected to miss the first two games. “He’s so dynamic, he can change the game by himself,” Fridge said.

The Lakers know all about the difference Dickson can make – he lit them up for three goals and six points in the one decisive game between the two teams, that being the 12-8 Burrards win. Dickson was credited with 10 shots in the game. Dickson is still suffering the effects of a hard hit he took during the world championships in field lacrosse, but his rehab is progressing rapidly. The Burrards enjoy a more

significant advantage on defence, having allowed an average of 6.94 goals per game, compared to 8.44 by the Lakers. Leading the charge is goaltender Frankie Scigliano, who might be the team’s MVP this year, after leading the league in both save percentage (0.838) and goals against average (6.65). The defence in front of him is formidable. The Porter brothers, Zack and Colton, are a pair of pitt bulls. Captain Tyler Codron brings every type of intangible – not to mention the tangibles. Garrett McIntosh is big, athletic and physical. Creighton Reid “is a big-game player who works the transition.” New coach Chris Gill, who will miss the first two games while coaching minor girls lacrosse at the national championships, has put in a new defensive system, and the players have bought in. It forces opponents to make several good plays in succession just to get a scoring chance. In goal for Burnaby is veteran Tyler Richards. “His reputation is that he can win the big game,” said Fridge. See Burrards, 16
