It cost the Town of Qualicum Beach more than $370,000 to sever ties with two senior staff members in the past 10 months. The NEWS obtained the data through a Freedom of Information request. CAO Mark Brown retired last October at the age of 53 after 33 years of employment with the municipality. He was paid $133,250 in severance pay, $37,351 in accrued vacation and $68,184 in accrued leave, otherwise known as sick leave. Trudy Coates was the corporate administrator for the town for seven years. In March of this year, it was announced she would be leaving her position as a result of restructuring and downsizing of the management team as the town said it was trying to reduce costs. Coates was paid $98,695 in severance, $11,344 in accrued vacation and $22,688 in accrued leave (sick pay) in accordance with Town policy. Mayor Teunis Westbroek reacted to the news by e-mail on Thursday. “Do I think the numbers you have cited are high and are they of concern to me? In a word, yes to both questions,” the mayor wrote. “However, you must also be aware that the town is bound by legal and contractual obligations, including existing policies and bylaws. We have to make payments in accordance with those legal obligations.” Westbroek also added that council deliberately delayed replacing the CAO to help balance most of those costs. New CAO Daniel Sailland starts his job in the first week of September. The Qualicum Beach Residents Association QBRA) declined to comment on the appropriateness of the payments but suggested that the information obtained by The NEWS begs more questions than it answers. “What were the reasons for the sudden departure of the town’s two most senior employees? Also, what are the total costs resulting from their dismissal, including the executive search service retained by the town to assist with the recruitment of Mr. Brown’s replacement?” read the e-mail statement from Bill Adkins, on behalf of the QBRA board. Skateboarder killed in Coombs accident

A 17-year-old Coombs boy died in Victoria General Hospital after being struck on his skateboard by a pick-up truck at the 2100 block of Alberni Highway July 30, Oceanside RCMP confirmed Saturday morning. “His death resulted from injuries sustained after being struck,” stated a news release issued by police. Oceanside RCMP Cpl. Jesse Foreman said Mounties were called to the scene at approximately 10.15 p.m. Wednesday, the night of the accident. Foreman said both the skateboarder and vehicle were traveling eastbound at the time of the collision. “He (the driver) couldn’t avoid hitting the boy,” said Foreman, who added it is not clear if the skateboarder was wearing a helmet. He said the boy was airlifted to Victoria General Hospital and sustained “serious” injuries from the accident. Foreman said the driver of the pick-up truck is a Qualicum Beach man and speed and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors in the collision. RCMP say they have yet to speak with all the potential witnesses, including a man driving a blue Chevy truck who stopped to assist the victim. If you were a witness, or have any further information, police are requesting you contact Cst. Shawn Parker of the Central Vancouver Island Traffic Services at 250-248-6111. A cluster of seemingly abandoned vessels continues to threaten the shellfish industry in Baynes Sound. The Canadian Coast Guard removed 6,000 litres of oil last month from a 100-foot tug boat that was “listing dangerously” in Deep Bay Harbour, according to Daniel Reid, CCG senior response officer. Reid said the boat, known as the Silver King, appears to be abandoned and has four seemingly derelict vessels tied to it. VIU Marine Station manager Brian Kingzett said Baynes Sound is especially at-risk when it comes to derelict vessels. “If one of those vessels sink, if there is even one small oil spill, it is very probable that it could put the shellfish industry out of business for at least a year,” said Kingzett. He noted that would put 40 to 50 people out of work and cost the shellfish industry around $20 million in economic activity. “Coast guards estimate removing a large vessel would cost probably $250,000,” said Kingzett. “But if it sinks — and that one (the Silver King) was starting to sink — the cost would go up to millions of dollars, and that’s all taxpayer money.” He said there is “tenfolds of difference” in removing a vessel while it’s still floating as

opposed to removing it after it sinks. Reid said the Silver King was brought to the attention of the coast guard by a concerned resident in July, but the vessel has been under the CCG’s radar since The NEWS reported it in January. “The goal is ultimately to find a person responsible for it (the vessel),” said Reid. “It’s a polluter-pay principle.” But tracking down boat owners isn’t easy. “People buy these boats for nothing thinking they can fix them and then realize it will cost way too much to maintain and then abandon them,” Kingzett said, adding boat registrations are often not updated make it difficult to find owners. “It’s irresponsible, but in a way, they’re forced to do it.” Kingzett said the problem is Canada’s lack of “enabling legislation.” He explains Washington state has a “turn-in program” where vessel-owners may request for their boat to be destroyed. “Nobody is funding a program like that (in Canada),” said Kingzett. “So the issue falls through the cracks.” Meanwhile RDN director Bill Veenhof, who represents Deep Bay, said Transport Canada may have funds in place to address the Silver King. However, if those funds do not come through he vowed to write a letter to senior levels of government requesting $250,000 for the purpose of removing the vessel from the Deep Bay Harbour.

Scrabble champion heads to Glasgow

A local “word nerd” who thrives in the world of competitive Scrabble will be hoping for some power tiles and a little bit of luck during a major competition this week. Andrew Twiddy is best known in Parksville for leading the Sunday service at the Anglican parish of St. Anne and St. Edmund but the Reverend is currently in Scotland where he is a member of a three-person team representing Canada in a tournament inspired by the sporting Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The 28-game tournament put on by the World English-Language Scrabble Players Association (WESPA) has 20 teams representing Commonwealth countries and takes place from Aug. 7 to 10. Twiddy has been playing the classic American board game since he was a young boy but about seven years ago he took it to the next level and now he is somewhat of a Scrabble genius. “In 2007 I noticed that the world Scrabble champion was a UBC student and there was a Vancouver club. I thought this could be fascinating because I played Scrabble so much for fun that I would like to look into competitive Scrabble,” he explained. He went to Vancouver and joined the Scrabble club where he did exceptionally well in one of the tournaments. He then competed in the Western Canadian championship in the entry level division. “I got really nice scores and some first place finishes so I started to move up the ladder a bit.” He has progressed a lot since that first tournament and this week will be taking on some of the best Scrabble players in the world. Twiddy’s language skills would put most people to shame. He agrees he has a way with words and credits his university education for his vast vocabulary. “A lot of my time was spent on ancient manuscripts studying the bible. Latin and Hebrew are the foundations of the English language,” he noted. He said pitting his wits against others in a game of words and numbers is a lot like poker and while Scrabble doesn’t qualify as an official commonwealth sport he stated the game is certainly as intense and

the Mind Sports Association is working towards getting mind sports like Chess and Scrabble included in the games. “Just as an athlete trains physically to run 100 metres, you are training your brain at the same level of intensity for top players. There are 260 thousand official words in English speaking Scrabble,” he pointed out. It is estimated that the average English speaker has a working vocabulary of 5,000-6,000 words but world class Scrabble competitors have the ability to store

tens of thousands of words in their head and pluck them out at will. One of Twiddy’s favourite words is scholia in which he got 108 points for in a game. It is defined as an ancient annotation upon a passage in a Greek or Latin text made by a scribe. More than 150 million Scrabble sets have been sold, according to Mattel, which owns the rights in most countries. It is estimated that some 30,000 games are started across the world each hour.

Dave Willie said he couldn’t comment on the specific cases of the two former staff members, but when asked if there are changes coming that might reduce the amount of sick pay that can be accrued, he said that is currently being reviewed. “We did have serious concerns about it and we reviewed it and had a staff report on it and that is being presented Aug. 11, I believe,” he said. Currently the town has a bylaw that permits the payment of accrued sick leave to a maximum of 120 days. Willie said 60 days is the norm and that will be in a report coming to council. As far as accrued vacation pay goes, Westbroek said vacation earned and not taken is

owed to employees by law, but what can be done better is to ensure that the staff take as much of their vacation as possible in the year they earn it, he said, although this can be difficult with work volumes. The Canadian Cancer Society Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock has already started filling up donation jars in the Parksville area. From July 27 to August 2, campers at Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park were riding in circles around the campsite to raise awareness and money for the childhood cancer fundraiser. Organizers of Tour de Rathtrevor wanted campers to ride as far as the Tour de Rock team will ride in September (more than 1,000 km) and raise at least $1 for each of those km ($1,000). Alli Roberts who works for RCL Park Services came up with the idea to have Rathtrevor campers support the fundraising efforts of Tour de Rock. Last year, campers donated $1,000 and RCL matched the donation. This year’s Tour de Rath-

Paternal politics

he increased involvement of Nanaimo’s mayor and council in the affairs, and pocketbooks, of Parksville Qualicum Beach residents has a distasteful, paternalistic feel. Recent decisions by the Regional District of Nanaimo’s board of directors serve as evidence the elected officials of the mid-Island’s largest community believe they know what’s best for residents here. The RDN board has a confusing, weighted system when it comes to voting. Nanaimo’s mayor and councillors — there are seven of them on the unwieldy 17-member body — can, and do, vote in a block to ensure their city’s interests are front and centre. The most recent example of this paternalistic approach to the hinterland came in late July when the board — on the strength of the weighted votes of the Nanaimo members — voted to release $1 million in taxpayer funds to the Island Corridor Foundation. (Curiously and significantly, French Creek rep and board chair Joe Stanhope sided with the city folk.) The representatives of places like Coombs, Bowser, Qualicum Beach and Parksville voted against the motion, and for good reason. There is no indication whatsoever that any train will ever travel any kilometre of track north of Nanaimo. The ICF has been dodging questions about schedules for more than a year. Why would taxpayers here support something that will have little or no benefit to their way of life or commerce? But the mayor of Nanaimo, among others who don’t live here, waxed poetic about a possibile opportunity being lost. One could almost picture the mayor patting us little people of the northern reaches on the head like children, telling us he knows best. The opportunity presented by rail — and we’re nowhere near certain a passenger train will actually operate on any portion of Island tracks again any time soon — are Nanaimo opportunities, period. Nanaimo has a handsome train station and possible rail operation support businesses that need to get busy. The civic elections this November would be a good time to debate the relationship between the RDN and local governments here. Hmmm, would an amalgamated Parksville Qualicum Beach make sense in relation to this issue? — Editorial by John Harding

Letters MORE CASH CALLS It looks like we in the Nanaimo hinterland are beating our heads against a brick wall of bureaucratic stupidity. I am willing to bet, if this railway thing really gets going, that we will be asked to come up with more than the $20 million currently estimated. And for what? What leads these people to think the revamped setup will be any more popular than the previous arrangement? I have seen the train go past with less than five people on board. I e-mailed the federal department responsible for contributing to this boondoggle and urged them to refuse. Obviously, in vain. I hope our RDN reps will continue to oppose this nonsense. B.C. Rail deal, lawyers and court costs to appeal the judges’ decision that ruled in favour of the teachers (twice) to name only a few — that equals billions of dollars. Meanwhile, the money and willingness by the government of B.C. to hire new teachers and put in place proper classroom support for all students equals zero. How to fix this? Cancel the carbon tax for schools. Children shouldn’t have to pay for heat/shelter. Isn’t this a basic human right, especially when the money just gets passed to corporations? Cancel funding for private schools — it’s a choice that people are willing to pay for. Only schools for special treatment/education of children with challenges such as Autism spectrum, hearing/ vision impaired should be funded. All these savings can then fund a proper public education for all students. Doctors, firefighters, politicians — teachers taught them all. LYNNE DONALDSON Parksville

ONE-SIDED VIEW Jim Drummond’s July 10 letter to the editor (‘Abortion in a democracy’) was discouraging. Drummond states that in a democracy, the majority decides the well being of society. While this is true as far as it goes, it makes the mistake of equating popular opinion with what is actually right or wrong. Sometimes the majority gets it wrong. Drummond implies that society condemns murder, rape, etc. just because the majority agrees. What would happen if the majority agreed that rape was wonderful? Would rape suddenly become morally acceptable? No. Majority rule is not the ultimate standard by which we determine right from wrong. This confuses subjective truth (majority’s agreed favourite ice-cream flavour) with objective truth (what is morally

obligatory for everyone). Addressing abortion, Drummond claims it’s a private affair and no business of society. The pro-life view sees the unborn as an innocent and valuable human being. If this is truly the case, then protecting the unborn’s human rights is the very duty of society. Is the unborn someone like you and me, or something we can discard flippantly like unwanted junk mail? If it is human, then outside of medical emergencies, no justification for abortion is adequate. Drummond claims those with religious objections to abortion should be allowed to hold their views but not force them on others. This view is conveniently one-sided. He applauds Justin Trudeau, who says MPs should not use their positions to prevent abortions. But MPs should use their positions to support them? Either way, democracy will “force” someone’s view through law; there is no neutrality here. It seems Trudeau and Drummond want to be able to force their views on society, represented through government, and extinguish any discussion of reform. Sound like democracy to you? GRANT-IN-AID APPLICATIONS Subject to the provisions of the City’s Grant-in-Aid Applications Policy 3.26, the City of the Parksville may provide direct financial assistance to community groups and organizations for events that will benefit its citizens and visitors. Eligible applicants are community non-profit organizations in the arts, cultural, recreational or social services field. Organizations wishing to apply for funding assistance are asked to obtain a copy of the policy to make sure their submission will meet all the necessary criteria and must submit their application on the approved form. Big surprise down a Coombs country road Bamboozle’s owner Diana Lagah travels the world to look for unique items JOHN HARDING editor@pqbnews.com

It’s easy to get Bamboozled down a rural road near Coombs. Nearly 1,200 people a week do it between May and November every year, said Diana Lagah, the owner of Bamboozle on Shawn Road in Coombs, a unique retail outlet featuring women’s clothing and much more. ‘Retail outlet’ hardly does justice to the setting and set-up of this shop. After taking a turn off the Alberni Highway, one travels over the railway tracks and down a road that one would expect to see small farms selling eggs or honey. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, or in the middle of nowhere, you see a dozen or so cars parked on the soft shoulder and wonder what exactly is going on here. When you enter the property you see a house. Sure, it’s not your average-looking house from the outside, but the surprises mount as you enter the residence. Each room — what could be a dining room or bathroom or bedroom — is packed full of cleverly-displayed dresses, clothing, accessories, home furnishings. Each room has a different scheme and on this day,

each room is busy with shoppers. “People are surprised to find something of this nature up a country road,” said Lagah, who is marking her 25th year in retail, the first 11 as owner of Parksville store A to Zebra. The operation is truly a family affair. Lagah and her husband Piara bought the property roughly 15 years ago as a 2.5-acre bare lot. Diana designed the buildings, Piara, a retired home builder, constructed them. One of the buildings now on site is a Tea House — also featuring women’s clothes, accessories and unique treasures — owned and operated by the couple’s daughter Danielle. The entire property has a worldly feel to it, and that’s not a surprise considering the globetrotting Diana and Danielle do to fill their rooms, stopping in places like Northern India, New York, California and Mexico. “I call it fashion, home decor and intrigues,” Diana said of her stock, “one-ofa-kind pieces that may turn up in some part of the world in our travels. We look for quality, fashion-forward, unusual items that are also at a good price point, good value for the dollar — it’s more of a lifestyle store.” The store, or house, has about 2,000 square feet of space to display the treasure Diana has found on her travels. The Tea House is about 800 square feet.

Diana was asked what she thinks has changed in retail over the past quarter century. “Customers are much more design savvy, well travelled and more price aware than 25 years ago,” she said. Retail can be tough. What keeps Diana

motivated? “I don’t know what I’d do if I wasn’t shopping,” she said. “Shopping is my addiction.” Bamboozle is located at 774 Shawn Road and is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday through Sunday, May through November.

In 1989 The Wealthy Barber (David Chilton) told readers “to look for (mutual) funds with a long-term track record; to make sure that the team who created the success was still running the show; to emphasize consistency by looking for funds that did well in both bear and bull markets; and to stay away from fad funds, focusing instead on value-oriented, disciplined management teams.” Now that nearly 25 years have passed, let’s have a look and see how this approach has worked out. Not so well, I’m afraid.

To his credit though, he concedes this in the sequel The Wealthy Barber Returns (2011). In his words: “I’m forced to admit that funds matching those criteria over the years have collectively underperformed the market. What’s worse, some of the management teams in whom I was most confident have posted the weakest returns. It’s frustrating, but past long-term performance has proven to have virtually no correlation to future performance.”

Still it’s a popular strategy to use past performance as an emotional button when promoting mutual funds. But as hopeful investors flock to the successful funds, cash levels grow, often at the most inopportune times: when markets are high. This forces the fund manager to make a choice: buy high, or sit on cash and wait for opportunities. Waiting can be costly though, as market timing frequently backfires, not to mention the fact that idle cash in a mutual fund is still subject to fees.

It is no secret that mutual funds are having a tough go of it lately, as a growing number of commentators, advisors, and investors look for alternatives. Exchange-traded funds, for example, have grown in popularity in recent years with their promise of near market-matching returns. Indeed the Wealthy Barber makes a case for these in his 2011 book The Wealthy Barber Returns. But ironically proponents of exchange-traded funds often still use past performance to make their case. It can be a compelling case, depending of course on which numbers you look at. According to Morningstar, over a 10 year period only 14 Canadian mutual funds have outperformed the iShares S&P/TSX 60 Index Fund (symbol XIU). However, let’s look at what has happened since 2011 -- a period during which the Canadian stock market has averaged only 4.36% (based on 3-year returns to November 30, 2013). By having the flexibility to underweight the weaker sectors, the number of Canadian equity funds that have bested the XIU has grown from 14 to over 200, with 57 of these actually doubling the XIU.

Four carvers will meet at Magnolia court for a carving event that runs through the weekend.

Carvers set to heat up Bowser Thursday An annual carving event in Bowser will see torches firing and chain saws blazing this Thursday and throughout the weekend. The Art of Carving a Community is celebrating it’s third year in Lighthouse Country and will see four carvers creating masterpieces on the grassy area beside the Salish Sea Market August 7 through 10. Bowser artist Ken Kirkby dreamed up the event with visions of filling the area with outdoor art, bringing people and attention to Lighthouse Country and helping

carve out a sense of place. Magnolia Court is hosting the event and support is coming from several businesses in the Lighthouse Community including the wood donation from Island Timberlands. Part of the event this year will include a fundraiser for a local carver who was in a motor cycle accident recently and is out of work. Itâ€™s with great sadness we announce Momâ€™s passing at the Qualicum Manor on July 26, 2014. Mom was predeceased by her husband Bill Workman, her parents, David and Myrtle Richardson, two brothers and one sister. Mom is lovingly remembered by her two children: Marilyn (Dale) Gratton of Chilliwack, BC, and Brent (Debra) Johnson from Qualicum Beach, BC. â€œNanaâ€? will be greatly missed by her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mom will be going home to Brandon, MB where some of her best memories with her late husband, Floyd Johnson, who passed in 1963. Floyd was the love and the joy of her life and they were meant to be together for eternity. Interment at Rosewood Memorial Gardens, Brandon, MB at a later date. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to Doctor Peter Haslett, who is truly a gentleman and a caring soul. Also to Liz and all the staff of the Qualicum Manor, who treated Mom with such care and dignity. Those we love donâ€™t go away, they walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard but always near. Still loved, still missed and very dear.

With training camp just ten days away, new head coach Jason Johns and the Save on Foods Oceanside Generals are ready to take to the ice ahead of the 2014 – 2015 season. The Generals, who have been taking to the ice at Oceanside Place throughout the summer, will bring in approximately 40 players to their main training camp, which gets going August 15 and runs to August 17. Johns, who is about to enter his first season behind the bench with the Generals, is looking forward to the main training camp starting and the chance to see the offseason work both he and general manager Lou Gravel put in, to go along with the work all the players who are attending have been putting in over the summer. “It’s going to be great, finally having it all come together,” head coach Johns said. “Lou and I have been on the same page right from the start and having that partnership during our work has made things run smooth.

We’re both in the same boat in terms of the outlook and direction we want this team to head and that always helps.” Last season was a struggle from many standpoints for the Generals, who will be looking to hit the reset button and start from scratch at the start of the season. The way things are shaping up, the Generals will be one of the younger teams in the VIJHL but Johns expects them to be an exciting team. “We’ve got kids from Boston, Colorado, Minnesota, California to go along with our locals, it’s a good mix,” Johns said. “Lots of young players, lots of new faces, so it’s going to be exciting from that aspect. In terms of the team itself, we have a good idea of what we want to put out on the ice, a competitive team that will bring lots of energy and bring some excitement back into the community for the fans.” One of the players both Johns and Gravel are looking forward to seeing in a Generals uniform will be Mathieu Jallabert. A talented player in his own right, Jallabert is looking forward to putting in a full season with the Generals after being an AP call up last year.

The Save on Foods Oceanside Generals are nearing training camp and with just under ten days to go, some of the hopefuls for next season are looking for that extra advantage during the Generals summer ice drop in.

“I’m really excited to be coming in here and playing here,” Jallabert said. “It’s close to home, which is nice, and this is a team that’s starting fresh. There’s going to be lots of new guys but everyone is really excited about getting things going.” Both Johns and Gravel were

extremely pleased knowing that Jallabert chose to come to the Generals over playing for the Nanaimo Buccaneers. Described by Johns as a “dynamic, exciting player, who if given room can dance like he’s in a phonebooth”, Jallabert just hopes to fit in with his teammates and put the puck

in the back of the net. “I’ll be looking to do whatever I can to help the team win some games,” Jallabert said. “Whether it’s setting guys up, throwing the body around or putting the puck in the next, I can’t wait to get out there and show what I can do.”

Nanoose Bay’s Mike Mason was one of two Canadian men finishing on the podium in the High Jump at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Mason, a former member of the UBC Thunderbirds track program, finished in third place, winning the Bronze Medal after he cleared the mark of 2.25 meters. The 27-year-old was on the track in Glasgow while the Canadian National

Anthem was being played for another Canadian athlete, Jim Steacy, was being awarded a Gold Medal in the hammer throw event. After the high jump event was finished, Mason and teammate Derek

Drouin, who won Gold in the high jump, handed off their Canadian flags to fellow athletes Brianne Theisen – Eaton and Jessica Zelinka, who would go on to win Gold and Silver respectively in the Heptahlon moments later.

It’s been a year full of soccer, soccer and more soccer for VIU’s Ben Robson and he’s only about to start his second year at the University level. Robson, an 18-year-old from Qualicum Beach, just finished up his season with the Mid Island Highlanders of the Pacific Coast Soccer League. The Highlanders, who are one of the six reserve mens teams in the league, finished in first place during their regular season, winning 10 out of their 12 games, losing just once and one game ending in a draw. Robson, along with fellow KSS graduates Evan Stefanek, Darien Atkinson and Grade 11 student Daniel Doukakis, all suited up for the Highlanders this season and it’s something that Robson enjoys seeing happen. “It’s great to be able to keep playing with these guys after

high school is finished,” Robson said. “We’ve all played together at one point or another and to see them coming up to the next level is great.” Robson will see Atkinson coming in to the fold at VIU next season to play with the Mariners. Once that season was finished, Robson moved on to play for Cowichan FC squad in division one of the Vancouver Island Soccer League. “It keeps me busy, that’s for sure,” Robson said. “Once I’m finished at VIU, I keep playing with Cowichan in the VISL and then once that season’s finished and school is all done, I get to play for the Highlanders. So there’s lots going on during the year to keep me in shape, soccer wise, and it’s great.” Robson and the Highlanders, who are coached by Ballenas teacher and soccer coach Larry Stefanek, ran in to the Victoria Highlanders team in the final. The last meeting between the two teams saw the Mid Isle squad destroy the Victoria side by a score of 8 – 2. Robson scored two goals in

that one and it set the tone for their rematch in the finals. “They’re a good team, they have a lot of good players,” Robson said. “We were feeling pretty good heading in to that final game though, winning the division and our last time out against them.” The game was played with a bit of controversy as the Victoria team had brought in players who hadn’t played for them until the final week in the season, players that were also members of the Premier Men’s team, which is a league above the Reserves. It was a close game all the way through, with both teams looking for an edge but Robson and the Mid Isle Highlanders dropped a 1 – nil decision, bringing a heartbreaking end to their season. “It was tough to go out that way, especially knowing that they brought those extra guys in,” Robson said. “It’s tough to see it happen like that because you worked so hard all season to get there and to lose it like that was a hard one to take.”

Parksville’s Brent Murray and his “Damn Yankee” funny car drag racing team came away the winners of an event down at Woodburn drag strip’s “Night of Fire” in Woodburn, Oregon. The night of races featured a sixteen car field,

With more than 100 teams descending on the beach volleyball courts in Parksville, the 2014 Western Nationals are taking form with just nine days to go. Taking place Aug. 15 - 17, the Western Nationals will feature the best beach volleyball players in three different categories, U-14, U-16 and U-18. Additionally, a recent grant of $5,000 from the province of B.C. will provide an extra boost for the tourmanet, which was already in full swing long before hand thanks to the willingness of the local community. “We had full support from the start from the city council here in Parksville which was great,” co-ordinator and Oceanside Outdoor Sport operator Shane Hyde said. “I worked really close with Chris Dinsmore, the executive director

He put the bid together and once that happened, the city was willing to do whatever they could to make it happen.” Bringing in the extra courts was crucial to the winning bid with the Sandcastle Competition being at the beach at the same time. There’s a total of 32 courts just on the east side of the grounds alone, which boasts well for the beach volleyball courts at Parksville Beach and being able to hold an event like the Western Nationals. “It’s huge. This is one of the better facilities you’ll find here in Canada, which says a lot,” Hyde said. “Last year we were able to host the Provincials and I think that sort of went well in getting us to this point this year. It made it a lot easier going forward with the extra courts being put in but this is a top notch place to come and play some beach volleyball.”
