“Friendly,” “locally strong,” and “lots of outside stuff” are just a few phrases being used to describe Mission. What other words come to mind? The Mission Chamber of Commerce has partnered with Mission Community Services Society (MCSS) and Community Futures North Fraser (CFNF) to develop a

brand for this community. “Mission doesn’t have a logo or brand,” said Manrose Mann, who is working on the project with the chamber. “We’re trying to define Mission.” To do that, organizers are asking for stories and photos to describe who lives here and why. Representatives are canvassing the community and have created a Facebook page called Mission’s Brand

The sounds of this year’s Mission Folk Music Festival have faded, but the experience is not one that will be forgotten soon. Thousands of music lovers made their way to Fraser River Heritage Park this past weekend to enjoy the international sounds and dances of groups from West Africa, Asia, Europe, and across

North America. From the opening salvos of the Korean percussion group Dulsori to the closing sets of Ireland’s Dervish, festival founder Francis Edwards said the event was one of the best ones ever held. “It was an exceptional festival artistically, technically, and organizationally,” said Edwards. “Ticket sales were good, audiences wonderful, the music – sim-

ply amazing, and the weather, perfect.” Attendance numbers exceeded Edwards’ expectations, but he notes the final numbers are not yet known. “There were many musical highlights over the weekend, from the main stage performances to the mini-blues festival,” commented Edwards. “Lemon Bucket Orkestra and Dulsori joined forces for a spontaneous musical outburst

in the middle of the audience in front of the main stage on Friday evening. Pure acoustic delight.” Another unforgettable festival moment happened on Sunday night during the festival finale when Ruth Moody had the entire audience singing with her as she belted out her acclaimed song “One Voice.” But perhaps the scene that stood out the most was the final song, Stan

Rogers’ “Northwest Passage,” which many consider Canada’s second national anthem, performed by all the festival artists and the audience. “It was a wonderful and emotive close to a magical weekend,” said Edwards, who also thanked the volunteers who helped bring the festival together. The 28th annual Mission Folk Music Festival is scheduled for July 24-26, 2015.

Mission woman found dead in park A deceased woman found Wednesday morning in Mill Lake Park in Abbotsford has been identified as a 36-year-old Mission resident. Police have not released her name, and Const. Ian MacDonald said the cause of death will not be issued until an autopsy is completed in the next few days. The woman’s body was discovered at about 6 a.m. by a person walking a dog in a forested area of the park at Emerson Street and Bevan Avenue. A large area of the park was taped off by police, and investigators were on the scene for most of the day. Members of the Abbotsford Police Department’s patrol division, major crime unit and forensic identification section have been involved in the investigation. The regional Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has not been involved.

Another memorable BC Games

The success of Brooke Kienas and the rest of Mission’s athletes at the recent BC Summer Games in Nanaimo was a reminder of just how special the provincial Games initiative is. Mission, of course, doesn’t have to go back far in its history to recall how such an event can electrify a community – the 2014 BC Winter Games were hosted here in February. That event involved 1,847 athletes and 1,745 volunteers, and generated $1.6 million in direct economic benefit. That figure rises to $3.2 million when indirect and induced economic factors are included. The 2014 Summer Games made a similar impression on Nanaimo, where organizers are estimating an economic impact of $2.6 million during the Summer Games. But the true beauty of the Games isn’t

in the dollars and cents – rather, it’s about the friendships formed, the life-long memories made, and the amazing performances authored by the athletes. Case in point: swimmer Kienas’s incredible seven-medal showing in the pool, which was likely the biggest medal haul by any athlete in Nanaimo. She’s a big fan of Mission’s Olympic swimming star Brent Hayden, a BC Games alum himself, and her medal-magnet performance goes a long way towards fuelling her own Olympic dreams. Mission’s other two Summer Games athletes, Bryce Mackenzie (two track and field bronze medals) and Cole Barker (gold in rugby) also showed extremely well. Success on the provincial stage is hardearned, and thus, supremely sweet. We celebrate with you.

DON’T LET YOUR TALENTS RUST Most of us have a particular talent for something. Some of us are creative, while some are good with people, and others may have a talent for mechanical things. Whatever our talents may be– most of us do have more than one–it is important for each of us to develop them to their fullest. One of the saddest of missed opportunities is not fully developing our talents because we may miss out on a more fulfilled life. The American poet and abolitionist John Greenleaf Whittier wrote, “For of all sad words of tongue or pen, the saddest are these: ‘It might have been!’” Although our talents may be modest, rest assured that we are all good at something, even if we are not sure exactly where our talents lie. Psychologists have developed aptitude tests to an exact science, and it is easy enough to find out what we are good at if we don’t already know. We should all do some thinking about what we are good at, or perhaps take a test, then develop a plan for putting our talents to good use.

YOUR VIEWS Folk fest a joyful and inspiring event Re: Mission Folk Music Festival. I’ve been living in Vancouver for 20 years now and this weekend was the first time my family and I had a chance to visit Mission. We had heard about the Mission Folk Music Festival (MFMF) and knew some of the performers so we decided to take the short drive and take in the event. Being a long-time musician and member of the Canadian music industry for several decades now, I have to say that I and my family were overwhelmed with the incredible joyfulness that we all expe-

rienced. It was inspiring, comforting, and so very amazing. We have the Vancouver Folk Festival here – an awesome event in itself, and having now experienced the MFMF, I can tell you that we were blown away by the performances, the atmosphere, the genuine kindness of the people, the warm community, and the event itself. Not only was the music wonderful, but there was space with, and around, the people to enjoy an uncrowded community. The schedule of events seemed to

flow like a well-written script of a classic story, a book you can’t put down, or a movie to which you are drawn. It was a joy we won’t soon forget, and one we will certainly tell our friends and family about, and return to as an annual family event. Thank you for the wonderful people, community and spirit that makes Mission the beautiful place it is, and the Mission Folk Music Festival the enlightening and joyful event that it so clearly is. NOTICE OF PROPOSED PROPERTY DISPOSITION TAKE NOTICE that pursuant to Sections 26 and 40 of the Community Charter, the District of Mission proposes to close, undedicate and dispose of part of a highway (Sabo Street) dedicated on Plan 41928, shown as the shaded area on the following map. “District of Mission Highway Closing and Undedication (Sabo Street) Bylaw 5446-2014” and a full-size copy of the plan may be inspected at the Office of the Manager of Corporate Administration, 8645 Stave Lake Street, Mission, BC, V2V 4L9, between the hours of 8:00 am and 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday, except any statutory holiday. The road in question is an undeveloped portion of Sabo Street adjacent to 13324 and 13330 Sabo Street which contains driveway access to those properties. Due to the steep slope north of the undeveloped portion of the road, construction of the road for vehicular access is not feasible. Council wishes to close a portion of the road right-of-way adjacent to 13324 Sabo Street that is approximately 6.0 metres (19.7 ft.) wide, and sell that portion to the owners of the adjacent property (Moira and Clayton Bush) at the price of $4,694.30 ($8.44 per square metre). This price is based on the BC Assessment appraised land value of the property. The subject portion of the road right-of-way has an area of 556.2 square metres (5,986.9 sq. ft.). The closure of the road right-of-way will not impact the functionality of Sabo Street as a road. Richards Avenue between Dewdney Trunk Road and Doyle Street Commencing July 7, 2014 Please be advised that commencing Monday July 7, 2014 the Public Works Roads Crew will be replacing drainage culverts located on Richards Avenue between Dewdney Trunk Road and Barr Street in preparation of a full road reconstruction being undertaken this summer. Intermittent day long road closures should be anticipated as this work progresses. A detour route will be posted to lead traffic around the work areas for the duration of the project. Following completion of the culvert works, the existing asphalt surface will be pulverized, the gravel reshaped and compacted and finally a new asphalt surface will be applied. This past weekend thee Downtown Business Association held the 4th annual Mission Fest, a free street festival held on 1st Avenue, and it was a smashing success! As the saying goes, things get better with age, and I think all can agree that this can be said for Mission Fest. We proudly hosted an estimated 6000 people on 1st Avenue, and smiles could be seen all the way down the street. The number of people who made this day such a success is extensive; Rhett Nicholson, who founded this incredible event when he saw the need for free family events, and gave many hours of his own time, Mission Community Services for organizing the non-profit vendors, the District of Mission, Mike Younie in particular, for being so incredibly helpful and helping to make sure everything was in place, all the vendors for choosing to come to Mission Fest, and the downtown businesses who participated so enthusiastically and welcomed many customers, new and old, to downtown Mission, our many generous sponsors, and our tireless team of volunteers who organized the car show,

vendors, entertainment and more, all with a smile and enthusiasm, who saw through the planning from start to finish. Our volunteers showed up at dawn, emptied garbage cans, handed out water, climbed ladders, hung signs, and more, all because they believe in community and in Downtown Mission. The biggest thank you goes to the Missionites who came to Mission Fest to enjoy all downtown has to offer and for all the kind and positive feedback you have given about Mission Fest and Downtown Mission. There are some exciting things in store for Downtown Mission, and we have so many wonderfully unique businesses. Our hope is that one day very soon all of Mission will come to see that downtown Mission is worth investing in, as many Mission Fest spectators saw for themselves on Saturday. Who Should I Call? Sometimes it’s hard to know whom you should call when you need assistance from City Hall. Here are some numbers that can help point you in the right direction:

Don’t race to the lake, and don’t race on the lake. Speed is a major contributor to incidents on the roadways and on the water. Slow down. Recreation on Tour is back for another summer. The Parks, Recreation & Culture Department hits the road, visiting a new park each Wednesday through July and August. Two Play Leaders will come armed with games, activities and crafts for 2 hours of fun from 10 am – 12 noon, and best of all its absolutely free. The activities are geared to children 6 – 10 years of age. Also, new this summer will be two sessions scheduled in the early evening from 5 – 7 pm so the whole family may join in. Families are encouraged to bring a picnic dinner and enjoy it in the park as part of the fun. These evening sessions will also make it easier for the Play Leaders to plan activities for children under 6 years of age if their parents are in attendance. This is a great opportunity to get outside, meet your neighbors and enjoy some active fun. Look for the white Parks, Recreation & Culture tent and you will Ànd us. All participants will have their name entered into a prize draw at the park. Parks on the 2014 tour include:

Marlins to host regionals BRONZE AT B.C.’S

The Mission Marlins swim club is hosting the Fraser Valley Regional Championship this weekend, Aug. 1-3, at Mission Leisure Centre. The meet is expected to draw 400 swimmers from the region, which encompasses clubs from Mission, Abbotsford,

DUBLAND, Helena Helena was born January 29, 1921 in Olgafeldt, Russia. She was promoted to glory on July 26, 2014 on the tertiary palliative care unit in Burnaby Hospital surrounded by her husband Olof, son Edward, and daughter Sylvia. She had dedicated her life to the service of her Saviour, spending 40 years as a missionary in India working with the people she loved. She met and married her husband, Olof, in India; and her two children, Edward and Sylvia, were born there. She was retired the last 27 years of her life, living first in Abbotsford, BC and then in Vancouver, BC. Her family who celebrates her life and will miss her dearly include: husband Olof, son Edward with his wife Pennie, granddaughter Elysia, grandson Joshua with his wife Stephanie and great granddaughter Georgia (age four months); daughter Sylvia with her husband Joseph, grandson Erin with his wife Julia and two great granddaughters Gracelyn (age 6) and Ivy (age two). The family gives special thanks for the excellent care given by the palliative care nursing staff and to Dr. Susan Germain, palliative care doctor. The funeral service is August first, 2014 at 1 pm at the Abbotsford Evangelical Free Church. Helen’s passion was evangelism. Paul Grindon was born in Manchester UK on January 17, 1946. He is survived by his wife Myralyn, his children Stephanie (Shane) and Eric (Melissa), his grandchildren Taysha, Zachary, and Elijah, siblings Carol (Dave), Ray (Rebecca), Sharon, John Diane), and a large extended family. He is predeceased by his parents Jack and June, his niece Tammy, his sister Catherine and his brother Peter. He met the love of his life, Myralyn Pipe, in high school, married her on August 2, 1969, and was with her until the moment he died suddenly in her arms on July 14th, 2014, from a heart attack. His gentle, caring manner and love for family and his humor and quick wit will always be remembered and missed.

Violet leaves behind her beloved husband of 56 years, Cecil (Steve) Stevens, daughters Karen and Fiona, son Paul and sonin-law Oscar Isakson. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jean Audrey Smith on July 23rd, 2014. She was born in New Westminster on January 22nd, 1940 to Gladys and Reuben Madland of Surrey. She attended several schools in Surrey and New Westminster graduating from North Surrey High school in 1958. She went on to work in New Westminster where

she married Earl in 1961. She is survived by husband Earl, sons Brian, Ronald (Maureen) and David, Sisters Linda (Jan), Luella and brother Ken (Leona), seven grandchildren, one great grandchild, sister in law Diane Issac and brother in law Ed Isaac and many cousins, nieces and nephews. We moved to Abbotsford in 1975 where she attended Fraser Valley College pursuing business courses and fine arts. We moved back to New Westminster in 1984 where

she went into the picture framing business. She left the business in 1996 and started back to school graduating from UBC when she was 65 years old. She liked to travel, with one of her highlights being when she and her sister went to Norway and England for a month. She was an avid reader, liked watching the History Channel and doing her needle work at the same time. She also enjoyed gardening. She was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in January 2013 and did everything she could to survive. Special thank-you to Dr. Gary Heffner, Dr. Winston and the Abbotsford Cancer Hospital, and Dr. Quan and all the staff at the Christine Morrison Hospice at Mission Hospital. FLORENCE GRACE Florence Grace, passed away peacefully Thursday, July 17th, 2014 at Mission Memorial Hospital, at the age of 95. She was happily married to her beloved Cecil Gerard McNicol on December 24, 1940, until his death on November 3, 2001. Florence was born in The Pas, Manitoba to Robert Robison and Mary Margaret Sinclair (b. McAuley; Johnston). She is survived by her sister Marion Cross Tremeer (Sinclair), half brother Robert Cecil Johnston and sister-in-law Catherine Vickery-Johnston. She was predeceased by her daughter Annabelle Grace McKie (McNicol), brother Robert Robison Sinclair, step-brothers Arnold Ross Johnston, Thorbin (Thorby) Johnston, John Garfield Johnston, and Claude Gerald Johnston, and stepsisters Colleen Perry (Johnston) and Muriel Campbell. Her father passed away when she was nine, creating a lot of hardship for the family. Her mother remarried and she was blessed with a large extended family that she cherished. In 1940, she married Cecil and followed him to B.C. when he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army and was stationed in Chilliwack. She returned to northern Manitoba when he went overseas and several years later the family moved to Winnipeg. Both Cecil and Florence fell in love with B.C. and followed their daughter Anne to Vancouver when she fell ill. Initially settling in North Delta, Cecil and Florence relocated to Armstrong but returned to Chilliwack and then Langley before Cecil’s death. She remained in Langley for several years, until her declining health forced her to move to a retirement home in Mission, where she spent her last years. Florence is survived by Annabelle’s family, grandchildren (Darrell (Gail) McKie and David Robert (Tannice) McKie, and great grandchildren Kayla & David McKie and Dawson & Camryn McKie; her daughter Vada McNicol, grandchildren Jamie (Jane) Penner, Christene (Darryl) Saam, Marnie (Wayne) McGhie, Shaun Penner and great grandchildren Amanda, Katie & Darryl Jr. Saam, Sarah Penner & Nicole (Brett) Schaefer, William & Emily McGhie; her sons, Frank (Ginette), Ted (Cheryl) and Rob (Nancy), and grandchildren Leigh McNicol (Ryan Dafoe), Mitchell McNicol, Kerri McNicol and great grandchildren Samara & Layton Dafoe. We would like to especially thank Nancy McNicol (Balducci) who devoted the last 5 months advocating/caring for Florence during her deteriorating health. FRASER VALLEY REGIONAL DISTRICT NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING NOTICE is hereby given that, pursuant to Section 892 of the Local Government Act, the Fraser Valley Regional District will conduct a Public Hearing with respect to Fraser Valley Regional District Zoning Amendment Bylaw No. 1275, 2014 [hereinafter referred to as Bylaw 1275] The Public Hearing will be conducted on Wednesday, August 13 at 7:00 p.m. at the Harrison Mills Community Hall, 1995 School Road, Agassiz, B.C.
