This year’s Juried Art Show, featuring the best of the Island’s talent, runs from July 25 to Aug 4 and will be held in the Train Station building. The 2014 show revolves around Henry David Thoreau’s quotation “What would human life be without forests, those natural cities” We intend that Thoreau’s quotation will be a unifying theme for the show. We hope for thought-provoking, well made art and a show that has a voice of its own.

The Stage is adjacent to the shaded Beer Garden so visitors can enjoy a beverage while listening to the entertainment. New Groovement- The Saturday Night Festival Headliner Act will play on the Sound Stage at 8:30PM. Featuring Port Alberni musicians David Chase and Jason Dolynny, The New Grooovement is an eleven-piece funk machine that blends elements of R&B, Soul and Hip Hop to create a funk-i-fied feast for the ears. The band’s sound is as unique as it is versatile with it’s punchy horns, sweet vocals, clever rhythms and tight percussion. This is energetic, feel-good music is backed by a killer horn section that is guaranteed to get you out of your seat and onto the dance floor. A rising star in Vancouver Island’s music scene, New Groovement has appeared at the Victoria International Jazz Festival and the Victoria Ska Fest.

A Reception will be held on Friday, August 1st. The evening will be open to artists, sponsors, dignitaries and the public who purchase tickets. Last year’s reception was very successful and a sold out event so be sure and get your tickets early. Cost is $25 and tickets may be purchased in advance at Kismet Quilts, Gayle’s Fashion, Boutique Belles Amis, at both Jenny’s Fine Foods locations (Kingsway & Argyle and at the Tourist Information Centre), at Swale Rock Café on lower Argyle, and at Jowseys Furniture & appliances, 4957 Johnston Road.

Mike Wiwicharyk with Seton Lake Contracting has a deep regard for the history of the valley and its logging heritage. Mike has loaned the festival Seton Lake’s vintage M&B Crummy. This vehicle will be used to make constant loops from the Art Rave site, up Argyle with stops at Char’s Landing and Rollin Art Centre. Both facilities have special events planned. Then on to a stop at the Industrial Heritage Building. Rides are free, thanks to Mike.

Lower Argyle will be strung with a series of 20X20 ft. pavilions featuring the best of local artists and crafts people displaying their creations and creating right before your eyes. The Pavilions will be open Aug. 2-3 from 11AM to 6PM and Monday, August 4th from 11 to 4PM Artist Demo Pavilions will be situated around the Historic Train Station housing various artists each demonstrating their talents. There’s an opportunity to chat with the artists and learn more about the various artistic processes.

And for the adults, try your hand at drawing from a live model or perhaps a Still Life.
