The potential for serious damage or disaster were averted at two separate Rock Creek area wildfire events within one week thanks to the response and actions of the new rural response capabilities of the Midway Volunteer Fire Department. On the morning of Monday, July 21 they were called to a wildfire on Myers Creek Road West in Kettle Valley; the second fire occurred at around 4:30 last Sunday afternoon on Hwy 3 west of Johnstone Creek Park. “Midway Volunteer Fire responded and were able to successfully suppress a fire that could have been as devastating as those in West Kelowna or central Washington below us,” said Midway Fire Chief Osellame of the first incident. “Without immediate response, the fire would have moved into a large field filled with three foot high dry grass and an uphill grade with no natural control lines.” Osellame stated that having a fire engine and a 3,000-gallon tender available for suppression was critical, adding they had averted a potential firestorm. “Given the relative humidity, wind, temperature and fuel at the location and on that day, there is no doubt that a wildland fire that took a ‘run’ there could have had devastating consequences for the residents of Kettle Valley and Midway as the fire travel direction was east/southeast,” Osellame said. Lions purchase evac chairs The Kettle River Lions Club has been a supporter of Parkview Manor since 1998 when members of the Rock Creek Medical Society and the Kettle River Lions Club gathered to discuss the building of a senior housing complex. Later that year, a non-profit society, the West Boundary Senior Housing Society, was formed and a fundraising drive began. The Lions continue to support the facility. Parkview Director Gerald Feist said they are hopeful that Area E Director Bill Baird will fund another pair of chairs for the second floor through the grant-in-aid-budget. The Boundary Hospital got a thumbs up recently from the head of Interior Health (IH). Interior Health CEO and president Dr. Robert Halpenny, as well as board chair Norman Embree, were at the Grand Forks hospital on July 16 as part of a tour of hospitals and health centres in the area. “On a yearly basis the board chair and I try and visit all our communities throughout Interior Health,” said Halpenny. “The purpose of our visits is to understand the geography, the topography that our rural health authority patients are exposed to. We visit medical staff at each site, we visit our staff at each site, we spend some time with local politicians.” They also meet with local health auxiliaries and foundations, said Halpenny. “We also do tours to make sure we understand the requirements in an individual site,” he said. “It gives us the opportunity to hear from our staff what their issues are. As a CEO of a $1.9-billion organization it’s important that I know what’s going on.”

Halpenny says Grand Forks and area residents are fortunate to have the medical resources that they do. “Our staff and the medical staff are very cohesive; they work as a team,” he said. “I think some of that comes back to the team aspect of this community. The physicians are involved with teaching medical students and residents—that raises the quality. The services that are provided such as a cancer diagnosis, they can get the treatment here in many cases. It’s a very high functioning site and I’m very proud of it.” New acute health services administrator Halpenny also announced that a replacement has been found for Ingrid Hampf, who has retired as acute services administrator after 30 years with IH. Brigitte McDonough will be starting as health services administrator – acute services for Kootenay Boundary starting on Aug. 18. McDonough has been a registered nurse with 14 years of leadership experience working in large, integrated healthcare systems, most recently with Alberta Health Services. She will be living in Nelson.

He said crews were out until 10 p.m. at Sunday’s fire. “Once again, our newest members of the Midway fire department from Kettle Valley and Rock Creek did an outstanding job of containing and extinguishing the major flames and hot spots to a stage where Forestry crews could come and complete mop up. The department response was aided by five nearby residents who did an excellent job of working with us to control the fire. “Congratulations to them for doing an excellent job of suppressing the fire, protecting the community, the property and the wild land, and for committing to training toward such an important community component.” The fire chief said the Myers Creek Road fire was started when a lawnmower blade hit-

Cause of the second fire was still undetermined. “We would like to remind everyone that open burning is not permitted until further notice as per Ministry of Forests regulations. Campfires, while still permitted at this time, must be no more than 0.5 metre by 0.5 metre and a water source and monitoring must be in place. Please ensure you put your campfire out completely. No one should profit from this madness As this is being written it was exactly 100 years ago that the world was counting down the final hours of peace before the outbreak of the First World War. Over the next few years four empires would be swept from the world stage. Borders would be redrawn and new alliances formed. They say hindsight is 20/20 and using the benefit of a 100-year lens, journalist Brian Stewart wrote an analysis for CBC of what the war meant, and continues to mean for us today. His article is entitled The 100-year conflict that is the First World War: How a reckless dance into the abyss in 1914 set the stage for our times. It provides an overview of an opinion shared by other scholars as well. In their book Paris 1919: Six Months That Changed the World, authors Margaret MacMillan and Richard Holbrooke detail how the world map was redrawn following the war —with tragic and ongoing consequences. “The ceaseless Israel-Palestinian crisis can be traced to WWI British promises of land to both sides, promises that inevitably came into conflict,” wrote Stewart. A more recent book —First World War: Still No End in Sight by Frank Furedi—has a title which pretty much sums up the situation we find ourselves in today. This week we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of the “war to end all wars.” Next week we will remember the 69th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima. But war continues and no end seems in sight. Perhaps it is time—long past time, in fact—to call a spade a spade and deal with those who profit from the sale of arms as international war criminals. The rule is “Thou shalt not kill.” Pretty simple, you would think.
