A parachutist is relatively unscathed after hitting a Vernon home. At about 4:15 p.m. Monday, a student with Okanagan Skydive was soaring above the Vernon Airport when he began to descend and struck a residence in the 2400 block of Myriad Road. “It’s only speculation but it seems like the student passed out and was unable to control the parachute,” said Bret Chalmers, with Okanagan Skydive. While there were reports that the parachutist got tangled in power lines, that wasn’t the case. “The parachute got caught up but there was 30 feet between him and the chute and he tumbled towards the ground,” said Jack Blair, Vernon deputy fire chief. The student, who is believed to be 50 years old and possibly from Kelowna or Westbank, did not break any bones and only sustained bruises. He had recorded about 200 parachute jumps 10 to 15 years ago but he had been at Okanagan Skydive for the first jump course. Chalmers has talked to the individual’s family as part of his company’s investigation into the accident. “We will do an incident report with our national organization,” he said.

Residents and emergency crews were scrambling after a plane went down in the hills west of Okanagan Lake. At about 6:45 p.m. Monday, the RCMP received a report of a float plane crashing in the Six Mile Creek area off Westside Road. “Residents in the area heard the crash and started looking before crews even got there,” said Gord Molendyk, RCMP spokesperson. Besides the RCMP, the response team also included the Okanagan Indian Band Fire Department, the B.C. Ambulance Service, the Wildfire Management Branch and Vernon Search and Rescue members. Road was extremely challenging. “It’s pretty ugly — heavily forested and steep,” said Leigh Pearson, with Vernon Search and Rescue. The plane was located at about 8 p.m. “The individual (pilot) was very fortunate because the plane came down in a wooded area,” said Molendyk. “He was able to walk away from the scene and was taken to hospital for treatment.”

Non-life threatening injuries were sustained and he has been released from hospital. The plane’s wings and tail were ripped off during impact. “It’s hanging up in the trees,” said Pearson, adding that the pilot was able to get out of the downed aircraft on his own. “He’s pretty lucky. He should be buying lottery tickets.” The pilot is 52-years-old and from Campbell River. It’s believed he was attempting to land on Okanagan Lake, after flying in from northern Alberta, when the engine stopped. The Transportation Safety Board will not attend the scene but is in contact with the RCMP and the pilot.

A hefty price tag is keeping Coldstream from extending public waterfront access. For the past several months, the District of Coldstream has attempted to acquire the Ormsby property on Coldstream Creek Road. When Margaret Ormsby died in 1996, her will called for the district to have the first opportunity to buy the entire property as a park. The trustee of the estate has sole discretion to negotiate and accept the sale price, and there is not a right of first refusal on the property. According to the district, it obtained an appraisal based on park use and this offer was rejected by the trustee. “The property has now been placed on the open market at a value significantly higher than the appraised park value,” states the district. The property is listed for $6 million, says resident Sharon Lawrence, who is hopeful Coldstream can purchase the property before it’s too late. “The clock is ticking here,” said Lawrence, who has a petition of more than 60 names of people hoping the land can be preserved for public use.

Coldstream council has found a legislative loophole in order to let the people be heard. Lavington residents packed the municipal office Monday night, hoping to have their opinions heard on the proposed pellet plant, a joint venture between Tolko Industries and Pinnacle Renewable Energy. The majority of those in attendance were fuming over the proposal next to the existing Tolko mill on School Road. But council could not entertain any comments regarding the plant due to the fact that a public hearing was already held in January and legislation prevents further public input. “Why was it cut off before we were given adequate time to make an informed decision or not?” asked Stephanie Hoffman, a resident who has collected close to 300 signatures in opposition to the plant. Park Lane resident Ruth Moore added, “Things have changed since January.” So in order to give the public a chance

Lavington residents packed Coldstream council chambers Monday night, many opposing the proposed pellet plant. to speak, council agreed to rescind third reading of the zoning bylaw, which would accommodate the pellet plant, in order to have another public hearing.
The earliest council can have a public hearing Aug. 11. Coun. Peter McClean offered the public a chance to come share their opinions at the committee of the whole meeting Aug. 5 when the Ministry of Environment is expected to be in attendance. “Council and any other member of the public will have the opportunity to provide input to the ministry,” said McClean. Meanwhile, Coldstream politicians were invited to provide information about the plant to the Lavington Community Association. “Why hasn’t anybody come to the Lavington Community Association meeting on this issue?” asked Sheri Austin, with the LCA, which meets the first Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. For those opposed to the plant, some of the main issues include dust, emissions, noise and traffic. The train traffic, which is expected to double, is a major concern, according to Ben

Authorities are still trying to determine who is responsible for a rash of arson fires. There have been about 22 suspicious fires in the Greater Vernon area in recent months, including 1,200 apple bins on Waddington Drive July 21. “We don’t know if we have one or more individuals involved,” said Gord Molendyk, RCMP spokesperson. The fires have ranged from dumpsters and boats to vehicles and the Kin Race Track grandstand. “Our officers continue to take leads from the public and follow up on information. We’re doing everything we can to solve these cases,” said Molendyk. “There have been very few wit-
nesses and they are generally at night.” Local officials have suggested the magnitude of the suspicious fires could possibly escalate and put lives at risk. “It’s very much a high priority,” said Molendyk of the investigation. “We’d like to bring this to a conclusion. The community is concerned as a whole about what’s next.” Vernon firefighters responded to a residential fire in the 3700 block of 38th Street Tuesday at 4:51 a.m. “There was slight damage to the wood deck and smoke damage to the siding,” said Jack Blair, deputy fire chief. “It’s considered to be suspicious at this time. It doesn’t meet up with the other fires such as the time of day but we want to be as thorough as possible.”

Brakes put on excessive speed richard rolke Morning Star Staff
Excessive speed on a busy Vernon road has three young drivers grounded. On Sunday at about 8 p.m., an RCMP officer observed two cars and a motorcycle doing about 130 kilometres an hour on 27th Street near 43rd Avenue. “The three vehicles appeared to be racing,” said Gord Gord Molendyk Molendyk, RCMP spokesperson, adding that the posted speed limit is 50 kilometres an hour. “All three drivers are friends and they were heading home to Armstrong.” All three drivers have novice licenses.
“They will have their driving habits discussed with ICBC,” said Molendyk. Once the police officer noticed the vehicles, he activated his lights and all three vehicles slammed on their brakes and came to a stop at 39th Avenue. All three vehicles were impounded, and each driver received excessive speed tickets for $483. Molendyk says the incident could have put public safety at risk, “There is a sidewalk on each side (of 27th Street) and if something had happened, it leaves it open for disaster,” he said of a vehicle possibly losing control. “To have these kinds of speeds at 8 p.m. is a concern right in the city.” In another case, a 19-year-old man was pulled over on the highway July 25 for doing 138 kilometres an hour in a 90 km/h zone.
“He turned in his radar detector to the officer. The driver told the officer he did not want it any more as it does not help,” said Molendyk. Six vehicles were impounded on Highway 97, north and south of Vernon, on the weekend because they were 48 to 83 kilometres an hour over the posted limit. Five of the vehicles were from B.C., including three local residents — a 19-year-old man, a 65-year-old man and a 17-year-old woman. The sixth vehicle was from Alberta. “Please slow down. We’re coming up to a long weekend and there’s lots of traffic,” said Molendyk, who can’t explain why motorists are exceeding the speed limit. “I have no idea if it’s the summer weather and people want to put the speedometer up and see what it’s like.”

Charges have been laid in an alleged Armstrong sexual assault. At the end of May, the RCMP began an investigation into an incident that was reported to officers. “This investigation required a great deal of time to complete and required forensic evidence to assist in the identification of the suspect,” said Gord Molendyk, RCMP spokesperson. An individual was arrested July 22.

Very few details are being provided about the victim. “All I will say is it’s an adult,” said Molendyk. “We work hard to keep the identity of victims confidential.” Joseph Vance Caron, 45, of Armstrong is facing charges of sexual assault, unlawful confinement, uttering threats and attempting to choke a victim to commit a sexual offence. Caron has been remanded in custody and is expected to appear in court again today.

dam off Mabel Lake Road, June 14 and high water conditions have hampered the search for the vehicle’s lone occupant ever since. “We’re looking at going in Friday,” said Gord Molendyk, RCMP detachment spokesperson. “The water has come down and the dive team is looking at going in to recover the vehicle.” The RCMP have been working with B.C. Hydro, which operates the dam, as part of the search. “Hydro is trying to cut back the flow to bring down the water levels further,” said Molendyk. The police were called to the scene June 14 after a motorist saw a pickup truck leave the road and go into the river. The identity of the operator of the vehicle has not been released yet.

VSS grad dies in accident chris bush Black Press
A former Vernon resident was among two men who died when their small aircraft crashed on Vancouver Island. The fatal mishap happened at about 7 p.m. Saturday as the small, home-built amphibious plane was taking off from Nanaimo Airport. Michael Cyril Weir, 73, from Saltspring Island, and Gerald Paul Thom, 50, of Youbou, died in the crash. Thom graduated from Vernon Secondary School in 1981. “The aircraft stalled on take-off and crashed upside down on the fairway,” said Ron Gueulette, chief of Cranberry Gerald Thom Volunteer Fire Department. Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to remove the victims from the plane before it was transported to a secure shelter at Nanaimo Airport later that night for inspection. Bill Yearwood, Transportation Safety Board regional manager for aviation accident investigations and investigator in charge of Saturday’s crash, was told by witnesses the craft lifted off, then appeared to suddenly lose altitude before making a sharp left turn. “It then made a very steep decent, nose-down, and hit the ground,” Yearwood said. The plane crashed near the 14th hole of Cottonwood Golf Course, close to the airport and golf course property line. Trent Kaese, golf course owner, said there were golfers on the 13th and 15th holes, but fortunately no one playing near where the craft impacted. “Fourteen happened to be empty and (the crash) was off to the side in the rough too, so it wasn’t a critical spot, possibly, even if someone had been on the fairway,” Kaese said. “Obviously we’re just concerned for the families. That’s the sad part of it.” Yearwood said the Avid Amphibian aircraft was owned by the two men on board and that they had built the craft together on Salt Spring Island. It had been based at Nanaimo Airport since December. “The aircraft is a two-seater flying boat and it’s powered by an air-cooled, Volkswagen fourcylinder engine that has been modified for aviation use,” Yearwood said.
Yearwood went on to say he found no obvious cause for the crash during his initial inspection Sunday, but by the condition of the propeller it appeared the aircraft was not under full power when it struck the ground. Investigators will contact the engine manufacturer to see if they will take part in the engine inspection, disassembly and testing to determine if the crash resulted from engine power loss. Yearwood said he has a number of witness statements, compiled by RCMP members on the scene, to sift through, but is also interested in seeing any video footage from anyone who might have been filming at the time and happened to catch the incident. Nanaimo Airport staff is also reviewing surveillance camera footage. Mike Hooper, Nanaimo Airport president and CEO, said the aircraft owners were members of the Nanaimo Flying Club. “Our thoughts are out with the families,” Hooper said. “What we’ll do is reach out to all of the people involved and see if we can help somehow to work through the challenges and process.”

Enderby shines
t could have been a completely demoralizing situation. After last Wednesday’s monsoon-like weather, the thousands of people attending the Girl Guides’ Spirit of Adventure Rendezvous had the monumental task of cleaning up. Tents had been blown apart and everything was drenched. The biggest challenge was how to dry out the piles of sleeping bags and other bedding being used by Guides from across Canada and around the world. But a little bird spread the word throughout Enderby, and what happened next was just short of a miracle. Richard Rolke “There was a line-up of people at the gate asking for bedding to take home to put in their dryers,” said Jodi, a veteran Guide leader of almost 15 years. Not only did Enderby residents reach out to these girls and leaders caught in the storm, word spread beyond city boundaries. “OK Armstrong, volunteering and helping others when they need it is one of the qualities we admire about our community. The 2,500 Girl Guides in Enderby are soaked after last night’s rainfall. If anyone wouldn’t mind picking up a load from my office to take home and dry for them, please let us know ASAP. Wet laundry will be arriving at our office very shortly,” stated a post on the ArmstrongSpallumcheen Chamber of Commerce’s Facebook page. People just kept showing up at the SOAR grounds at Enderby’s Riverside Park. “We had to turn people away there were so many of them,” said Jodi, adding that the entire experience became extremely emotional. “Us old farts who have been to a few of these events had leaky eyes.” But the surprises kept coming as the freshly laundered sleeping bags were returned. “Some of the bags had little notes from the

people or treats for the girls. It just melts your heart,” said Jodi. Not surprisingly in our modern era, social media was all abuzz. “Thank you to the people of Enderby, and Armstrong for your incredible community spirit, and the warm welcome you have given us. We are honoured to call Enderby our home, even if it is for such a short time,” wrote Guider Angela in SOAR’s Facebook group. Many turned to the City of Enderby’s Facebook page. “From the parents of a Guide from the U.K., thank you to everyone who has been involved in the planing and running of SOAR 2014. Special thanks to the incredible community of Enderby for welcoming everyone to your city and for the help you gave after the storms. It has been heartwarming to know our daughter has been well looked after and we can’t wait to hear all her stories once she returns,” stated one post. But the care and compassion wasn’t limited to just the storm. Enderby residents embraced these girls and made them part of their lives while they were here — whether it was the welcome signs in store windows, the smiles on the street or the giant crowd that turned out for the opening parade. “Thank you from my daughter and myself, your city opened its arms and welcomed these girls whole heartedly. A piece of Enderby is coming back home to Medicine Hat, Alberta in ever lasting memories,” wrote one parent. A Guider unable to attend SOAR had the following message for Enderby residents — “You have made a name for yourself throughout the province for your warmth and welcome.” At a time when there’s a concern about our society becoming more insular and people not wanting to get involved, the residents of Enderby and Armstrong have bucked the trend and they should be proud of themselves. You have been true ambassadors for the North Okanagan.
Recent incidents on Vernon area roads demonstrate that some people aren’t getting the message about excessive speed. On Sunday at about 8 p.m., a police officer came across two vehicles and a motorcycle racing on 27th Street — one of the busiest routes in town. One can only imagine what would have happened if one of these motorists had gone out of control, particularly when there is a constant flow of vehicles and pedestrians. The most troubling aspect of this situation is the drivers, who reached a speed of about 130 kilometres an hour in a 50 zone, only had their novice licenses. They are still developing road skills and their ability to handle such excessive speed is doubtful. But this wasn’t the only example of poor decision-making. Six vehicles were impounded on Highway 97, north and south of Vernon, on the weekend because they were 48 to 83 kilometres an hour over the posted limit. The bottom line is that speeding drivers are jeopardizing the lives of everyone on the road, including themselves. “At those speeds and if you get into an accident, the chances of not surviving go up dramatically,” said Gord Molendyk, RCMP spokesperson. Parents, children, spouses, friends could have their lives shattered forever because a loved one was taken away from them. And even if an accident victim survives, injuries could create lifelong challenges. Speeding may provide a momentary thrill or get you somewhere a few minutes early, but is that worth the risk? Please slow down.

Relocate the race track
e the race track vs the City of Vernon. How much longer do we have to suffer with the ongoing bickering between these two parties? Here is a timely solution. Seeing as how there are no more grandstands and there will be a payout by the insurance company, put the money that would be spent on lawyers and get together with the provincial government and request that the track be relocated to O’Keefe Ranch. This would create a destination tourist attraction and could become the entertainment centre of the North Okanagan. Just think of regular events — cowboy days, ranch tours, a golf course across the street, auto racing just up the road and a restaurant. And best of all, the City of Vernon owns the property. Surely you educated grown-ups can talk face-to-face and mutually come up with a solution to this decade long legal childlike argument. Hey guys, the general electorate don't care who owns what or who is responsible for what. We just want to move on and get some productive results. I am taking my ball and going home now. Instead, you have chosen to increase corporate welfare, introduced a bunch of silly laws that were turfed by the Supreme Court of Canada and appointments of people to the Senate and other high places that should never have been made. Many of those appointments reeked of nepotism. On a party level, you have personally created and participated in improper activities. No, I have not forgotten the in-and-out scandal, the Senate appointments and assorted voter irregularities. You have besmirched our international reputation with lax environmental regulation that only

As Vernon is over-populated with us older ones who do not dash across streets but on 25th Avenue, where there is a flasher, it is mostly ignored by the cars that wind up at 41st Street and barrel down 25th Avenue. I have been nearly hit a few times by drivers who for some reason are mesmerized in their cars. Speeding through the flasher, looking straight ahead so they never see the flasher or the person trying to cross. The last time I asked a gentleman if the light was working, he said yes but that he never crossed there as no one paid any attention. I know some pedestrians believe their lives are protected by the fate or the gods above but

VPAG shows work by aboriginal artists Morning Star Staff
The Vernon Public Art Gallery is about to open a large collection of art by Canadian aboriginal artists. The two new exhibitions include Decolonize Me, a travelling show featuring work by six contemporary First Nations artists from across Canada put together by the Ottawa Art Gallery, and PUTI KwALA Okanagan We Are Still Here by the Kama? Creative Aboriginal Arts Collective, comprised of Okanagan Nation (Syilx) artists. “We are happy to be able to bring such a significant show here to the VPAG for our local community to enjoy,” said gallery executive director Dauna Kennedy Grant. Featuring the work of Sonny Assu, Jordan Bennett, Cheryl L’Hirondelle, Nigit’stil Norbert, Barry Pottle and Bear Witness, Decolonize Me, according to VPAG curator Lubos Culen, is a “contemporary critical evaluation of Canadian history told through the lens of First Nations artists.” Decolonize Me features six contemporary Aboriginal artists whose works challenge, interrogate and reveal Canada’s long history of colonization in daring and innovative ways, added Ottawa Art Gallery curator Heather Igloliorte. Deliberately riffing on the title of Morgan Spurlock’s film, the pop-cultural phenomenon Super Size Me (2004), the exhibition’s title emphasizes the importance of recognizing the role of the individual within larger discussions of shared colonial histories and present-day cultural politics. “In the context of the recent efforts of many Indigenous communities to assert their sovereignty and right to self-determination, the artists in this exhibition explore the issues and outcomes of both colonization

indigenous culture and identity. Derived from the Okanagan word S?at qw(l)p kama? (meaning pine needle), Kama? Creative is used by the collective’s members to symbolically represent the traditional landscape where the artists reside. The collective is comprised of Okanagan Nation established and emerging artists who have come together to support aboriginal interdisciplinary and multimedia arts development, promotion, education/community involvement and production. For this exhibition, Kama? members Barbara P. Marchand, Mariel Belanger, Sheldon Louis and Dean Louis, who are all members of the Okanagan Indian Band (Suknaqinx), will each give a contemporary perspective on how she/he looks at the Syilx life over time. “Marchand’s work speaks of the deeper emotions and traditional lives of the first people that inspire her work, while Belanger takes the spirit of what it means to be Syilx through the view of the traditional kwilsten, or sweat lodge, and represents a pattern in the rebirth of identity,” reads a release about the collective. Sheldon Louis’ paintings are a study of the impact of the residential school system on his youth, while Dean Louis explores the Okanagan people today through his graphic design practice. Both Decolonize Me and We Are Still Here open at the Vernon Public Art Gallery Thursday with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Participating artists from Decolonize Me, Jordan Bennett and Cheryl L’Hirondelle, will give an artist talk and a tour of the exhibition at 6:30 p.m. Admission is by donation. Vernon’s Deborah Wilson is the only female and Canadian sculptor asked to participate in an international jade carving competition in China.
A Vernon artist is the first woman to be invited to China to exhibit her work alongside Chinese jade carving masters. D eb ora h Wi ls on has been carving jade for 40 years and has been described by National Geographic as “among the best of the world’s contemporary jade sculptors.” Her work has come to the attention of master carvers in China, who have invited her to compete in a highly prestigious national jade carving competition to be held in the fall of this year. “It’s one thing to visit China, which is on the top of my bucket list, but quite another thing to go as an invited jade artist,” said Wilson. The Arts and Crafts Association in the city of Suzhou, a jade carving centre close to Shanghai, is paying all of Wilson’s
expenses so that she can show her jade sculptures with thousands of Chinese jade carvers in the annual Zi Gang Bei competition. Wilson will join three other male jade artists from outside China – one from New Zealand and two from the U.S. – at the event. Wilson and her male colleagues say they are honoured to be a part of this event, and are hard at work in their respective studios preparing for this competition. “Our small group will be the first ever to show and compete with the Chinese master carvers. What an opportunity to mix and mingle with such incredible carvers,” said Wilson. “I hope to be able to see how they work in their studios and workshops, study the tools they use, and of course be tempted to procure some of their nephrite jade.” Locally, Wilson’s work has
been featured at Ashpa Naira and Headbones Galleries in Vernon, ARTE Funktional in Kelowna, as well as at Gallery Odin on Silver Star Mountain. Her jade sculpture, Kalamalka Reflections, which sits in front of the former library building in Vernon’s Spirit Square, was created during the 2002 OkanaganThompson-International Sculpture Symposium. Her work has also been commisioned across Canada and internationally. “For many years I’ve been encouraging and creating contemporary jade art,” said Wilson. “Currently there is momentum coming from dedicated members of our vibrant jade community in seeing that this ancient and enduring art form flourish in the international realm. A dream of mine, shared by others, is now becoming a reality.”

A collective of Sunshine Coast musicians are about to travel up the Shuswap River for the first time. After playing up and down the coast, The Brothers’ upcoming show in Ashton Creek is their first foray into the North Okanagan, said lead vocalist /guitarist Chris Hergesheimer, adding the band will bring its catchy, genre hopping party music and infectious energy to Lorenzo’s Café Friday. Performing a West Coast upbeat style of music mashed up with world sounds, The Brothers have their roots playing around the fire in a glass teepee. In a recent blog, Richard Beck writes about a family vacation, including a couple of nights at the monastery of the Benedictine Sisters of Erie. “We enjoyed the hospitality of the sisters and were left to fill the day for ourselves. But when you have that much time on your hands, along with being electronically unplugged, you can start to get bored. Or at least I can get bored. I’m not a natural contemplative.” It reminded me of a comment by Roman Catholic theologian James Alison. When people tell him that they find Mass boring, he responds, “Mass is supposed to be boring, or at least seriously underwhelming. It’s a long-term education in becoming unexcited.” We live in a world which
is increasingly plugged in. All around us, we are urged to connect, to “like,” to get excited. Cable news, advertising, political discourse, social media — all of it increases the pace and frenzy of life. Alison suggest that Christian worship is a sort of counter-propaganda. In worship, we can become unexcited. We slow down and reflect om our lives in the presence of God. To use Alison’s language, we should strive to be bored. One of the gifts of summer is that we do slow down somewhat. We spend a little less time in front of our computer screens, and more time reading in the hammock, or laying on the beach, or walking along the lake shore. We recover a little balance in our lives. That’s what worship helps us do. It’s a time away from the
frenzy, a time to reflect more quietly and peacefully about our lives in the contest of God’s economy. Some people have called this a form of resistance, a way of fighting against the principalities and powers out there which seek to make us less satisfied with our lives and always seeking more. Worship is a way of dropping out of the frenzy. So it’s no wonder that it seems boring to so many. We have become so accustomed to the frenzy, so used to being constantly entertained. Stimulated. We’ve been well-trained. But that constant frenzy can become toxic to us, and to our spirits. We need to drop out of that spirit of the age and regain that balance. We need a revolution of humility and compassion and love Granted, this does not happen only in worship. It can happen
as we venture into nature; as we take time away from our plugged-in lives; as we leave our iPhones at home; as we slow down to while away the time more slowly. The point is to be intentional about it. It doesn’t happen by itself. We pay attention to the ways we are being whipped into this kind of frenzy, and then make a conscious choice to disengage ourselves from it. Beck calls it a boredom revolution. We walk in an alternative way of more compassionate and reflective living. We live more simply and quietly. We opt out of the frenzy for a while. Two days of learning. A lifetime of benefit for Vernon caregivers. That summarizes the value of the free Family Caregiver Series, offered here next month by the non-profit Alzheimer Society of B.C. It provides effective ways to care for a person with Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia. “For family caregivers, the commitment can last many years, and can bring with it high stress levels and illness,” said Carly Gronlund, the society’s support and education coordinator for Vernon and the North and Central Okanagan.
Participants will learn about dementia, practical coping strategies and early planning. “It is through education that caregivers understand the disease and learn effective strategies to deal with changing communication and behaviours,” said Gronlund. “With this new understanding caregivers become empowered and they are ultimately more resilient on the dementia journey.” The free series is designed for family members who are caring for a person with dementia. Running on Tuesdays, Aug. 19 and 26, it covers the following topics:
n Understanding Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. n Effective and creative ways of facilitating communication with a person with dementia. n Problem-solving for responsive behaviours. n Planning for the future. n Self-care for the caregiver. add a special twist to any gathering. The first is a great summer salad or side dish when you’re in a hurry and want something a little off the beaten path. It has a delightful flavour, even with an absence of leafy greens. The salmon caesar salad is a meal in itself and a nice change from a plain, or chicken caesar. It’s also very decorative with the lacy parmesan chip and home made croutons. Give them a try this long weekend. The Slice is right (Courtesy of the Victoria Food Club) 1/2 head of fresh fennel Sea salt Sweet yellow and red grape size tomatoes (about 1/4 cup each or to your taste) Handful of pine nuts Pinch of hemp and flax seeds Good quality balsamic vinegar Extra-virgin oil Freshly ground black pepper
Grated fresh Parmesan Core and then thinly slice fennel, including fronds. Artfully sprinkle on large plate. Grind a little fresh sea salt over top and toss to mix. Next, slice a few yellow and red grape or cherry tomatoes in half or thinly slice. Sprinkle over fennel. Salt it and walk away for 10 to 15 minutes. Let mixture steep, weep out moisture and basically give it time so the ingredients get to know each other more intimately. Meanwhile, grab a frying pan. Throw in a handful of pine nuts and pinches of hemp and flax seeds. Drytoast or roast in a warm oven until pine nuts are deep golden and the whole thing smells dizzily aromatic. Set aside. Throw caution and measuring spoons to the wind. Freehand a generous drizzle of really good quality balsamic vinegar (or try vincotto or cream di balsamico) over top,

and then finish with lashings of extra-virgin olive oil. Add dusting of freshly ground black pepper and gratings of Parmesan. Finish with the toasty nut mixture. Salmon Caesar Salad with Parmesan Cheese Crisps 3 large eggs 3 oz. of fresh grated Parmesan cheese plus more to taste Non-stick spray 6 oz. salmon fillet Juice of half a lemon 1 tsp. of olive oil 3 cups of fresh washed Romaine lettuce 2 oz. of Caesar salad dressing (Renee’s Caesar is my favourite) Juice of 1/4 fresh lemon

Kosher salt and fresh cracked pepper to taste Croutons 4 tbsp. of olive oil Granulated garlic to taste 1/2 baguette cut into cubes 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese, or to taste Bacon bits, optional Lemon twists, optional Place the eggs in a small pot, then fill it with cold water. Bring the eggs to a boil then put a cover over the pot, remove from the heat and let sit for 12 to 15 minutes. Chill the eggs completely before slicing. On a sheet pan lined with parchment paper and sprayed with non-stick spray, place 3 three-inches in diameter of shredded Parmesan cheese and bake in the oven on 350 F for 5 to 6 minutes. Once cooled, remove from the pan and set aside. Next, season the salmon on all sides with juice from half
a lemon, and salt and pepper. Brown on both sides in 1 tsp. olive oil in a hot sauté pan, until cooked through. Set aside once it is finished cooking. Place the baguette cubes on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper. Drizzle on olive oil, sprinkle on granulated garlic and bake in the oven on 350 F for 12 to 16 minutes or crunchy and golden brown. Once everything is prepared, dress the outside of a large salad bowl with the Caesar salad dressing. Add the romaine lettuce, the Parmesan cheese (to taste), croutons and mix thoroughly. Squeeze lemon juice on the bottom of a plate, then place the tossed salad greens on top. Garnish with sliced hard boiled eggs, a sprinkling of bacon bits if desired, salmon, cheese crisps, parmesan cheese to taste, fresh cracked black pepper and a lemon twist.

Sustainability focus of watershed tour Morning Star Staff
Sustainability leaders from across B.C. are embarking on the trip of a lifetime Thursday. They have been selected to take part in the Sustainable Living Leadership Program, a 25-day educational adventure run by the not-for-profit Rivershed Society of BC. The group will journey the route of the salmon from the Fraser River’s headwaters near Mount Robson to the shores of Vancouver. Travelling 1,400 kilometres by canoe, raft, shut-
tle van, and on foot, participants learn about sustainable living and responsible community and resource development, while immersed in the everchanging scenery of the Fraser River. During their journey, the SLLP participants are also designing a sustainability project to implement in their home communities upon their return. Among the participants is Leigh Herbert, of Enderby, who will provide video and written description of watersheds while on a series of selfpropelled trips in the Shuswap area.

Beacom’s bomb boosts Canadians Morning Star Staff
The Vernon Kal Tire Canadians open the B.C. Pee Wee AA Baseball Championships Thursday morning against host Port Coquitlam. The Canadians advanced to the 10-team finals by brushing back the Kelowna Cubs 5-3 in Sunday morning’s Okanagan Zone playoff final at Creekside Park. Vernon meets Campbell River Thursday afternoon, takes on Kelowna at noon Friday and closes preliminary play Saturday versus North Delta. Brayden Beacom homered over the left-centre fence to put Vernon ahead 4-3 in the seventh inning Sunday, his first dinger of the season. Vernon lost their Valley opener 9-6, to Kelowna, before ambushing the Penticton Thunder 19-1,
and grounding the West Kelowna Diamondbacks 16-4. “We certainly have strong pitching depth and very consistent defence,” said Vernon head coach Mark Batchelor, assisted by Gus Morris, Nick Foufoulas and Colin Rafferty. “We have a solid hitting lineup from top to bottom, but at the end of the day, we don’t give away many runs.” Tournament MVP Chris McIntosh started and pitched 3 2/3 innings while yielding two runs in the final. Carter Morris pitched the remaining innings. Chase Batchelor looked like Yadier Molina as he gunned down three runners at second base. Beacom led the inning with a first-pitch homer. Falcon Thomas then singled and Matthew Hansen singled him home for the final run.
Beacom started on the bump for the C’s against the Diamondbacks, going three innings while fanning four batters. He also drilled a double to centre to cash in a pair of RBI. Landen Harison was MVP with two RBI and pitched the final three innings, striking out three. Other Canadians chipping in on the offensive outburst were Batchelor, with three hits, a double and four RBI, while Hansen, Ryan Gamage and Thomas all smacked doubles. Batchelor struck out seven and went the distance on the hill for the C’s versus Penticton. Vernon exploded out of the gates with 11 runs in the first inning. Game MVP Hansen got things rolling in the first with an RBI single. Beacom, Gamage and Batchelor doubled with a pair of RBI and Thomas banged an RBI double.
Batchelor jacked a bomb in the fourth with Gamage on base. Vernon struggled against Kelowna, only scoring one run in the first three innings thanks to Jack Janzen’s sacrifice fly. Batchelor relieved Morris in the second inning and held the Cubs in check with three strikeouts over three innings. Thomas (MVP) singled in Morris in the third and Nakoda Parker doubled home a pair to centre. Gamage pitched the fifth and sixth and struck out four. Vernon got within one in the sixth on a pair of singles from Eric Foufoulas and Hansen. Morris was solid at short with back-to-back assists to Gamage at first for two outs. McIntosh pitched the third and fourth innings with two K’s, an assist and a line-drive catch on the mound.
The Vernon Source for Sports Tigers are beginning to gear up for the B.C. Junior B Lacrosse Championships at Kal Tire Place. “I gave them a few days off to rest up their bumps and bruises,” said Tigers’ coach Myles Brumpton. “It is good to get away from lacrosse for a few days.” The Tigers got back into the swing of things tonight and will practise once more before the tourney opens. “We are going to work on our special teams and throw in some different scenarios. The teams we will see play a more hybrid game than what we saw in our league this year. It is more of a mix between field and box lacrosse,” said Brumpton. The Thompson Okanagan champion Tigers host the West Coast Junior Lacrosse League champion Delta Islanders (15-01) Saturday night. “We can look up their games and ask people about the teams, but until you go up against them, you really don’t know what you are up against,” said Brumpton.

Picklers paradise at MacDonald Park Morning Star Staff
A total of 64 players competed in the second annual Vernon Pickleball Club Open Invitational Tournament on a sunny Saturday at MacDonald Park tennis courts. “Some of the top ranked players in Western Canada participated in our tournament,” said club director Cheri Burgess. “Many players came from out of town (Richmond, Penticton, Kamloops, Kelowna) and the courts were lined with spectators. We would like to thank Vernon Volkswagen for the use of their event tent.” The pickleball club now has more than 225 register members. Outdoor play continues throughout the summer at MacDonald Park and Middleton Mountain. Newcomers can attend free lessons Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. at MacDonald Park. The Tigers battle the Kamloops Venom (14-1-1)in an all TOJLL meeting Sunday. The Tigers downed the Venom 3-1 in a dramatic final. The Venom are the only team this year who were absent from last year’s provincials in Burnaby. “We couldn’t have asked for a better series to get us ready for provincials,” Myles Brumpton said Brumpton. The opening ceremonies take place 2:30-4 p.m. Sunday. Following the ceremonies, the Tigers will take on the defending provincial champion Saanich Tigers at 6 p.m.

The defending Red River Cup champions, Team B.C. fell short of bringing home a medal. Team B.C. took two teams to the football event, team blue and team orange. “It was good competition. The competitiveness there was second to none in the nation,” said Dino Geremia, technical director for Team B.C. “It was really good for them because they know the level of football they can play at now.” The two teams featured two VSS players. Tyler Riva, a stocky linebacker played for the blue team and quarterback Keegan Vicklund played for the orange team. The blue and orange team both went 1-3 in the round robin. On the final day, they both downed the Nova Scotia team before playing against one another. The orange team bounced blue 21-7. “Both kids did very well. Keegan was very impressive on Wednesday and Tyler showed a lot of effort and improvement over the weekend,” said Geremia. The Red River Cup was held at Investors Group Field, home of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The teams had a disastrous trip down which cost them valuable practice time. “We had a horrible travel day on our way out there. Our flight got cancelled and we had a huge layover in Calgary. A three-hour travel day turned into a 10-hour travel day and the kids missed practice time because of it,” said Geremia.

The second-place Brown Benefits overcame the plucky Lake Country FC with a 3-0 victory. Both teams started out a bit shorthanded but when the reinforcements showed up, the tempo picked up as well. Browns applied the early pressure and were rewarded when Lionel Hoffman’s cross turned into a shot and fooled Lake Country keeper Todd Ryder at the near post. A defensive slip gifted Chris Purnell a breakaway but replacement keeper Colin Burton made a great save to maintain the 12-0-3 Browns’ lead until the half.

After the restart, Jim Kruiper made a great run down the wing and his cross found Hoffman for a simple tap-in. Kruiper was involved again for the third when he was hauled down in the box and Don Brown stepped up to convert the penalty. The Rented Mules got revenge on Rutland Spirit with a comfortable 6-0 win at Parkinson 10. The 4-10-1 Mules got an early goal from Harry de Haas, followed by a Mike Hrzic goal due to a fortunate deflection, then Gurinder Dhaliwal then scored the goal of the night with a long run and a fine finish. Hrzic got his second with an excellent turn and finish following a great pass from Clarke Burnett, and Dhaliwal got his second with an inadvertent deflection from a Hrzic shot, which at least saved the Mules from having to listen to recently converted forward Hrzic regaling the group with tales of his hat trick, and reminiscing about things that never happened when he was younger. Grant Turik then boosted his personal stats with an irrelevant goal to round out the scoring. Rutland worked hard in tough circumstances, with Murray Milsom excellent in the centre of the Spirit defence and keeper Harold Schock making a number of excellent saves. Pushor Mitchell brushed back Cantinas 5-0 with two goals by Mike Bertoia, and singles from Paul Hart, Scott Percival and Andy MacDonnell. Meanwhile, Turn-Key shaded the host Revelstoke Stallions 2-1 in North Okanagan Soccer League playoff action Sunday night. Turn-Key scored at 30 minutes on a Sean Bonnet free kick from half that deflected from Nathan Tucker’s chest inside the 18 to an open Thomas Pool, who buried it bottom corner. At 55 minutes, Andrew Pool created some room in the corner to get a cross to Jai Gosia, who nicely placed it in the net. Revelstoke snuck through the defence and beat keeper Gregg Douma to make things interesting.

The Gray Monk/Longhorn Impact shaded the Chick Kickers 2-1 in Vernon Women’s Soccer Association Masters Division play Friday night at Marshall Field #2. The Kickers scored first on a wonderful goal on a full volley in the first half. Michelle Johnson started it off for the Chicks. Winger Tania Sladen made a rush down the flank, cut into the middle and flipped a pass over the defender’s head to Johnson who, after one bounce, smoked the ball over keeper Derri Ann Cooper’ head. Cooper stood no chance. Just before the half, Myra McEwan sweetly headed in a corner by Alicia McCreary for the equalizer. Both teams made numerous runs and through balls and McEwan set up the winner at 65 minutes on a high lofting ball from just past the half line. Looking for the run on, she hit the post and it popped right onto the foot of Bree Pickett for the tap in past Crystal Bergman. Roadrunners Janelle Smithson and Edeen Ramsey were stellar up front, making it one of the most exciting games to date for the 10-2-3 Impact.
Controllers battle hard with 11
In other action, the Vernon Controllers showed up with 11 players and fell 3-2 to the host Shuswap Merlot. The Salmon Arm ladies went ahead on an early corner, but Michele Wernicke levelled things with a rocket off the keeper’s fingertips and under the bar. Krista Copeland was credited with a goal as Wernicke’s corner bounced in off her, Copeland’s first goal in her first game as a forward. Leading by one at the half, Controllers’ keeper Mickey Templeton could not stop a pinball deflection off a defender on a drive by Merlot’s Janet Beltz. Minutes later, Val Dessaulles drilled one under the bar from distance for her second of the night for the winner. It was a hard-fought game from start to finish with the Controllers having the better of the chances and possession. The back line of Jody Pope, Leah Mulvihill and Brandei Hunter were bold with Hunter being named Lady of the Match playing her best game of the season. Up front, Mandy Frederick, (Lean) Lena Dean and Wernicke were dangerous all night. The VQA showed up with 10 players and at times, when breast feeding needed to be done, and pulled out a 3-1 win over the Goplen Drillers at Marshall #3. Sarah Wallace, with a deuce, and Sue Barss provided the offence for the VQA (5-9-2), who got deluxe goalkeeping from one-time hockey calendar girl Karen Benn. Carly Bibby ran a marathon, while the back line of Penney Crebo-Dolman, Shelly Johnston and Beth Lazar was dynamic. Some splendid attacks were turned in by Ute Kintzel, Carla Gibson and Harmony Crockett.
Kwantes pulls hat trick for Centreline
In Division 2 play, Capri Insurance held off Centreline Attack 5-3 at Marshall #1. Striker Sarah Kwantes pulled the hat trick for Centreline, who got an excellent half showing in net by Celine Connely after starter Azra Cawley was injured recording a kamikaze diving save. Peggy Schepp covered the last quarter of the game in goal and was strong as always. The purle squad got a an all-planet performance from Jodi Hawthorne, a truly graceful, hard-kicking, smartplaying machine who can play any position well.

Vandenbrink earns $520 Morning Star Staff
Hillview’s Keith Vandenbrink carded a 1-under 71 Monday to share seventh spot in the CNIB ProAm Tournament at the Kelowna Golf & Country Club. Rob Anderson of Kelowna and Dean Claggett of Two Eagles Academy in West Kelowna, tied for first with 67s. Vandenbrink pocketed $420 while recording two deuces and finishing with five birdies. His pro-am team, including Brian, Bea and Jarrett Yamoaka, was fifth and won Titleist wedges. As a part of the eve-
ning festivities, there was a 174-yard KP shot from the clubhouse to a green across the pond. Vandenbrink was last to shoot in the pro division and won a $100 for a 7-iron shot to about six feet. Meanwhile, Jeff Vest and his eight-year-old son Ryan shot 5-under 67 played in a Parent/ Child Scramble at the U.S. Kids World Championships in Pinehurst, N.C. The 2013 Slo-Pitch National Co-ed provincial D champions Imagine Pools Anarchy are headed to Calgary for nationals. The four-game round robin starts Friday with the elimination games starting Sunday. The Anarchy are comprised of Courtney Bissell, Tracy Bell, Jennifer Gartner, Sheila Martin, Taryn Robertson, Jessica Sinclaire and Cortnay Solmes rounding out the ladies. They are supported by Todd Doyle, Garth Gartner, Don Prowse, Braden Robertson, Kurt Prowse with coaching from Brandon Solmes. When you have 5-4-2-2 distribution and the right count for one no-trump, open in your five-card suit when it is a major. If the five-card suit is a minor, open one no-trump
with strong doubletons or when your rebid might be uncomfortable if you start with one of your long suit. Here, if North opens one diamond and South responds one heart, North has an easy one-spade rebid. So North should open one diamond. After South actually bid one spade, North had just enough to raise to four spades. But if North had settled for three spades, South would probably have raised to game, although he might have rebid three notrump, the game contract that is unbeatable. After taking the first trick, West will continue with the heart king. But what does he do next? There are two answers to that question: Cash the club
ace to save the overtrick or take two club tricks! It all depends upon East. He should realize that his side needs two heart and two club winners. So it must be right to ruff his partner’s heart king and shift to a club. As you can see, this is the only way to defeat the contract.

Born on March 4, 1956 in Nelson, Blair grew up and graduated in Terrace before moving to the Shuswap in 1979. In 1987 Blair married his wife Susan (Maidment). Together they raised their children, Rachel and Ian, who were his greatest pride and joy, they meant the world to him. Blair was employed by Federated Co-Op from 1979 until he retired, due to health reasons, in 2008. The proud owner of Fine Line Custom Picture Framing in Salmon Arm; Blair created some of the best work in the area. A talented artist and athlete, whatever he did, excellence was always his goal. A self taught musician, Blair was well known in the Shuswap as the drummer of Rohanna. He devoted many years to perfecting his ability and practice was the heartbeat of the home. It was a joy to watch him perform. As well, he was a sought after goalie and an avid golfer. Blair could also do almost anything with a frisbee and his love and appreciation for beautiful automotives was legendary. Everyone who knew Blair loved him; he was just easy to love. He will be missed by all of his friends and family, but most especially and profoundly by Susan, Rachel and Ian. A private celebration of life for family and friends will be held to honour the life of this good man, gone far too soon.

Siv Kristina Andersson died July 25, 2014 at Vernon Jubilee Hospital. Siv was born in Arsunda, Sweden on April 15, 1936. She is survived by her husband Sven and her 3 daughters: Diane, Irene and Kim, and her two brothers Stig and Knut Hedin, both still living in Arsunda.
D. Blair Mitchell died peacefully, Thursday, July 24, 2014 in Salmon Arm B.C., at the age of 58. After enduring a lengthy illness, he left this world in the arms of his wife. He is finally free.

Siv bravely packed up her 2 year old daughter, Diane, and immigrated to British Columbia with her husband Sven in 1960, first settling in Vancouver where Irene and Kim were born. The family then moved to the Okanagan Valley in 1967 where Siv and Sven have lived since, except for many great winters spent in Baja California, Mexico.

Siv developed many wonderful friendships wherever she went. She had a great heart and made everyone comfortable with her infectious laugh, wry sense of humour and her wonderful cooking and baking. Her warmth and compassion touched the hearts of many. One of her favourite projects was knitting hundreds of toques for the children on the cancer ward at BC Children's Hospital.
