No end in sight to teachers strike
TEARING UP THE TRACK IN SALMO
BY LIZ BEVAN Times Staff
With the summer already half over and back-to-school sales starting, teachers and students don't know when they are heading back to the classroom. Teachers are scheduled to report for duty in less than a month, and Kootenay-Columbia Teachers' Union President, Andy Davidoff, says plans for starting school are still up in the air. “Nobody knows,” he said about a start date for the 20142015 school year. Davidoff says there is no meeting in sight for the government and the BC Teachers' Federation (BCTF) to sit down and negotiate. “We are talking about talking,” he said, adding that a mediator was appointed, but there was nothing to mediate. “Supreme Court Justice Stephen Kelleher has been made available to mediate the dispute, but the problem is that the government has said there is nothing to take to mediation because we are too far apart.” See BLAME, Page 3 JIM BAILEY PHOTO

BEAVER VALLEY
Summer youth club offers variety for local teens BY LIZ BEVAN Times Staff
Beaver Valley’s summer youth club will be focused on helping the environment and some crucial winged wildlife over the next couple of weeks. “Bats, Bees and Birds” is next on the list of programs planned for teens in the region. Tammy Gallamore, responsible for communications for the Village of Fruitvale, says this activity will help teach the kids more about becoming involved in their community, while also having a good time. “Bats are so important to the environ-
ment,” she said. “(The activity) also brings out the idea of volunteerism and helping out. Kids need an outlet in the summer and we are trying to have a bit of fun with the “Bats, Bees and Birds” program” The Beaver Valley Youth Council will spend Wednesday putting together and decorating bat houses, bee boxes and bird houses with help and support from the Kootenay Community Bat project. Next week, the projects will be placed around the Beaver Valley with the help of the Fruitvale Volunteer Fire Department and its tall ladders. There is a fun and educational activity
planned every Wednesday for the summer designed to keep the youth engaged, occupied and learning. Gallamore says the program is filling a current hole in community programming. “There is nothing to do for the 12-to16-year-old age group and that is who we are targeting,” she explained. “We are in a smaller community and there aren't a lot of programs offered to that age group out our way.” Organizers also have the goal of bringing kids, who may not normally hang out together, to participate. This past weekend, two federal political parties chose their Member of Parliament nominees for the newly formed South Okanagan-West Kootenay (SOWK) riding. Penticton native Marshall Neufeld secured the Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) spot for the constituency at the party's nomination meetings and he says he is looking forward to getting to know the constituents in the traditionally NDP-leaning West Kootenay. Residents should expect their doorbells to be ringing in the next couple of weeks. “It's all about getting out there and meeting people,” he said. “The best way is door-to-door. People are usually comfortable on their doorstep and will say exactly what they think.” Neufeld hopes that he can find common ground with voters in the riding, even if they may not end up voting for the CPC. “Many times (during conversation) we will find that we have many common areas of interest,” he said, adding that no matter what party voters prefer, he wants to represent everyone. “If there are people that are staunchly NDP, they are probably not going to be changing their votes and that is fine, but you still want to be able to have heard them out and know what their opinions and values are because you have to work for everybody in the riding.” After the weekend nomination meetings, Neufeld is still riding high on his nomination win. “It just feels tremendous,” he told the Trail Times on Monday. “You just feel honoured by people putting their confidence in you. The first feeling when you get the official word from Ottawa is humbling. We had hundreds of people come out and then to have such a large percentage vote, you are just completely humbled.” Neufeld was running against Kelowna's Rick DeJong for a spot on the ballot, and ended up winning by an 88 per cent margin. The Liberal Party nomination went to Connie Denesiuk from Penticton who was running unopposed in the SOWK riding. Both the Green Party and the NDP have yet to announce candidates to run against Neufeld and Denesiuk in the 2015 federal election.

Blame game continues on both sides

TECK’S MULTIMILLION DOLLAR ADDITION UP AND RUNNING
FROM PAGE 1 In a mid-July press release, the blame game continued with Education Minister Peter Fassbender saying it was the B.C. Teachers Federation that wasn’t willing to look at a deal. “(The BC Public School Employers’ Association) stands ready to negotiate any time, with or without a mediator,” he said. “Whenever the BCTF is ready to commit to a fair and affordable settlement that is in line with the other public sector agreements to date.” Teachers began job action in May and it escalated to a full-scale walkout in mid-June.
Man suffers injuries FROM PAGE 1 The woman was found deceased when officers arrived at the scene. A 38-year-old man was also located at the scene and suffered minor injuries. He was transported to the hospital for treatment. Police don’t believe that alcohol was a factor in the rollover, but believe the woman was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the incident. “This was a significant contributing factor to her death,” said a press release from the Trail RCMP detachment on Monday. “Seat belts save lives. Please wear your seatbelt at all times.” Investigators are still looking into the cause of the accident. No names have been released.

A two-year multimillion dollar project is up and running at Teck Trail Operations, and Trail Times staff took a tour through the No. 1 Acid Plant Friday morning. The new acid plant is a $148 million capital project constructed by mostly Canadian companies, many located in the West Kootenay. It is the single largest capital investment the company has made since 1997’s KIVCET Lead Smelting Furnace. The new facility was built to improve the company’s environmental performance, in particular, to reduce sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions by 15 per cent. Fluoridation referendum on tap BY ARNE PETRYSHEN Cranbrook Townsman
The City of Cranbrook is preparing for a Nov. 15 municipal election, and part of that will include a referendum on fluoridation of the water supply. Since 1966, Cranbrook has added fluoride to the water supply in the form of hydrofluorosilicic acid. The city put out information on the referendum recently with the notice that it will host a public open house with Canadian health experts on both sides of the fluoride debate talking about the subject. The exact date, time and location will be announced in early September, but it will likely occur in early October. “The City is informing residents about the water system and water fluoridation, and will host an open house on this topic in early October,” the statement from the city noted.

tea, processed food and drink, mechanically deboned meat, teflon pans, pesticides and fluorinated pharmaceuticals. Cranbrook Public Works uses a small metering pump at the Phillips Reservoir to transfer the fluoride from a storage tank in the potable water stream. The city said it aims for a concentration of 0.8 mg/l(ppm), which is within the guidelines set by Health Canada. Cranbrook is one of six communities in the province that still adds fluoride to the water supply, which accounts for three per cent of the population of the province. The other communities are Fort Saint John, Prince George, Sparwood and Terrace. Prince Rupert is listed as a community that adds fluoride, but according to its website currently doesn’t as it needs to upgrade the fluoride system at some point.

The actual referendum question will be: “Are you in favour of Council adopting City of Cranbrook Cease Fluoridation Bylaw No. 3799, 2014, which authorizes stopping the addition of fluoride to the municipal water supply effective January 1, 2015?” In the referendum, a “yes” vote means you are in favour of eliminating fluoride, while a “no” vote means continuing to add fluoride. The city also put up a brief history of fluoridation on its website. Fluoridation began in Cranbrook after a referendum in 1966. The city noted that at the time fluoride was gaining recognition worldwide as a cost-effective way to reduce cavities and many North American communities started to add it to water systems from 1940 onward. Fluoride can be found in a host of everyday products, including dental care products,

Music and arts festival denied liquor licence By Steve Kidd
Penticton Western News
After weeks of uncertainty, the Liquor Control and Licensing Branch is reporting they have denied a liquor licence to the Boonstock Music and Arts Festival. “After working with the RCMP and festival organizers, and reviewing the event’s safety and security plan, the Liquor Control and Licensing Branch is not confident
that potential safety concerns identified with the Boonstock festival have been sufficiently addressed. As such, we will not be approving its liquor application,” said Ray Tetzel, deputy general manager, compliance and enforcement division for the LCLB in a release to the Western News. “Public safety is of paramount importance for any large-scale public events and the
LCLB will not consider a licence application when security cannot be planned or communicated adequately.” Barb Haynes, director of operations for the Boonstock Music and Arts festival, said the festival is going ahead regardless, though they are appealing the decision. “Boonstock is happening,” she said, noting that tents and fences are going up. “We
are excited to show what we can deliver and hugely disappointed for LCLB decision. We are not done and are working to change the bureaucracy.” On June 27, International Crowd Management, who had been booked to handle security for the event, terminated their agreement with the Boonstock festival citing safety concerns after organizers made “sudden and signifi-
cant changes to the safety plan without consultation with ICM or the various city, provincial or federal stakeholders.” Boonstock organizers worked quickly to find another firm to supply event security and on July 8, Haynes announced a new contract with 24/7 Security from Aldergrove. That, she said, enabled Boonstock to meet the LCLB’s July 8 deadline for sub-
mission of the liquor licence application and security plan for review. “This is a new event to the region and that’s why public safety officials worked hard to try and assist Boonstock organizers, providing them with guidance on what gaps needed
to be filled to ensure that any potential risks were addressed. Unfortunately these risks remain outstanding,” wrote Tetzel. According to Haynes, more than 7,200 tickets have been sold for the three-day festival, which takes place from Aug. 1 to 3.
Customers on the hook for cab cleanup
THE CANADIAN PRESS VANCOUVER - If you’re feeling queasy, step away from the cab. That’s the advice from taxi drivers across British Columbia after the province’s Passenger Transportation Board approved a new fee earlier this month. It allows drivers and companies to charge a $75 fine - on top of the flag fare - to passengers who soil or damage the interior of a vehicle with bodily fluids or solids. Drivers have always been permitted to charge for the cost of cleaning vomit, or any other nasty substance, from cabs, but the new rule sets a specific rate, giving cabbies and their companies more certainty about how to handle the sticky situation. Few taxi drivers wanted to comment on the new fee Friday, some worried they would lose their jobs if they shared their opinion. Vancouver taxi driver Amarjit Singh said he, like many cabbies, is familiar with the consequences that follow once a passenger vomits in a vehicle. “Other people can’t sit in the cab,” he said. “It smells so bad sometimes.” He said the resulting cleanup costs can vary widely depending on the cleaner and the extent of the damage. Then there is also money lost for the time not working, he added. “It’s fair for the drivers,” said Singh, referring to the fee. “Sometimes drivers lose their time.” Singh, who often works days now, said the problem is much more prevalent for those who drive overnight, especially after the bars close. Carolyn Bauer, the spokeswoman of the Vancouver Taxi Association, said most of the problems happen during Friday and Saturday nights, usually around Vancouver’s the entertainment district. “It happens all the time,” said Bauer of sick passengers. “We’ve had not just throw-up in the taxi, we’ve had a lot worse.” “We’ve had a few times where they’ve urinated and the car is down for two days because it needs to be completely disinfected.”

of the country’s finances. “It’s a pretty respectable start, although it is early days yet,” said Mary Webb, a senior economist with Scotiabank who specializes on fiscal policy. “The part I worry about is on the revenue side because employment has not been very strong and for the government personal income tax is very important.” Employment growth has been weak in Canada the past 12 months with only 72,000 net new jobs created. However, the government has benefited from strong oil prices and higher inflation, which tends to increase tax revenues. Webb said attaining a balanced budget by 2015 is “important politically” for the Harper government, but not from a market perspective. “If Ottawa was able to reduce the deficit to below $5 billion, it will look very good and the deficit will be a fraction of GDP (gross domestic product),” she
pointed out. Politically, however, the Conservatives need to balance the budget in order to fulfil a 2011 election promise to cut taxes for families through income splitting once the deficit is eliminated. Ottawa has a few aces in the sleeve toward achieving the target, even if economic and employment growth underperform expectations. Although the budget projected a $16.6-billion deficit for last year, the preliminary numbers point to a shortfall about $4 billion below that number. As well, Ottawa has built in a $3-billion contingency buffer it may not need. Finally, the government can sell assets, such as millions of General Motors shares, to reduce the deficit. Still, the expectation is that in the coming months Ottawa’s books will be showing fewer and smaller monthly shortfalls, turning to surpluses by the end of the year.
Nunavut
Officials meet to tackle persistent dump fire
THE CANADIAN PRESS IQALUIT, Nunavut - Government officials are to meet this week to consider a plan for putting out a dump fire that has been fouling the air in Nunavut’s capital for more than two months. The city of Iqaluit just doesn’t have the $2.2 million it would take to quench the blaze and its nostril-searing smoke, said fire chief Luc Grandmaison. “We’re asking them (the territory) to help us with resources.” The fire began May 20 and has been dubbed the “dumpcano” - a term Grandmaison regrets having coined, because he feels it belittles the seriousness of the situation. The combustion is centred somewhere deep within the massive pile of trash that is the Iqaluit city dump. The burning section - about the size of a football field and up to four storeys deep - is a smoky cauldron of untold numbers of household
garbage bags. There are no flames. But Grandmaison said the subsurface heat reaches up to 2,000 C. The heart of the blaze is too deep for firehoses to reach. The pile of garbage is too unstable to attack with backhoes or other equipment. The best crews have been able to do is cut trenches through the garbage and isolate the burning section from the rest of the dump. The fumes have at times closed schools and prompted health warnings. City council decided the fire couldn’t be allowed to burn itself out and turned to a landfill expert from British Columbia to help. Anthony Sperling has proposed building a large pond walled by dirt and garbage and filled with seawater. High-extension excavators would take load after load of burning waste and dunk it in the pool to extinguish it. The waste would then be drained, flattened and stored in a

new area. Water from the quenching pond would be pumped onto the burning section of the dump to quell the flames expected to leap up as shovels bit in. The work would continue for weeks until the garbage pile was no more than five metres high. Specialized industrial firefighting crews would have to wear respirators and splash suits to protect themselves from contaminated water. Sperling said the problem is that the Iqaluit dump, commissioned in 1995,
was supposed to be open for five years. It’s still in use, nearly 20 years later. “It’s been stacked higher into very steep slopes to make it last,” said Sperling. “That’s created conditions that make it very difficult now to extinguish it.” It’s the dump’s fourth fire since midDecember. In 2010, a blaze took six weeks to put out. Iqaluit’s situation isn’t unique in Nunavut. In 2001, Nunavut mayors pleaded with Ottawa for extra money to deal with dangerous dumps and
lagoons. A 2004 report by the Conference Board of Canada made similar points, as did a 2010 consultant’s study for Environment Canada. A 2011 estimate put the cost of modernizing all 25 municipal dumps in Nunavut at between $320 million and $500 million. Sperling’s plan has been approved by Iqaluit city council. The government of Nunavut and representatives from Environment Canada and Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development are to meet with city officials to discuss it.

Report shows mercury poisoning downplayed: band THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - For years, the federal and provincial governments have known members of a northern Ontario First Nation suffered from mercury poisoning but failed to provide adequate compensation or health care, band members said Monday. The Grassy Narrow First Nation said it has obtained an unreleased government report that found there is “no doubt” people in the community of roughly 1,600 near Kenora, Ont., suffered from mercury-related neurological disorders - something the band said officials have never formally acknowledged. “The government has been sitting on this report since 2009,” Grassy Narrows Chief Roger Fobister Sr. said in a news conference in Toronto. Meanwhile, the Mercury Disability Board, which includes both levels of government, “continues to overlook the sick people of Grassy Narrows,” Fobister said. Grassy Narrows said the report was commissioned by the board, which administers compensation for those whose health suffered as a result of mercury poisoning. Water around Grassy Narrows has been contaminated with mercury since a local paper mill dumped an estimated 10 tonnes of neurotoxins into the system between 1962 and 1970. Grassy Narrows and the Wabaseemoong Independent Nations negotiated an out-ofcourt settlement with Ottawa, the province and two paper companies in the 1980s. The board was created as part of the settlement. The province established a mercury working group more than a year ago, but Da Silva, who is part of the group, said progress has stalled without participation from Ottawa.

In defence of the younger drivers
A
recent column on the B.C. government’s decision to raise speed limits on portions of rural highways elicited numerous comments from readers. Some questioned my suggestion that today’s new drivers are worse because they spend their formative years staring at screens in the back seat instead of looking out the window and grasping the grim physics of the real world. There is no doubt that B.C.’s graduated licensing system for new drivers is more difficult than what my generation faced. Those vehicle stickers with the “L” (for learner, or as teens prefer “loser”) and “N” (for novice, or in teen-speak “nerd”) have been around since 1998. The two steps make getting a full driver’s licence a longer, more difficult and expensive process. Statistics provided by ICBC show what new drivers are up against.
First there is the written “knowledge test” hurdle to obtain a learner’s permit. From 2004 to 2008, more than half of applicants failed in their first attempt. Things improved in subsequent years, with a 46-per-cent failure rate in 2009 declining to 42 per cent by 2013. The first road test is required to go from “L” to “N” and it seems sufficiently harsh. The failure rate has been consistently around 47 per cent in the past six years. More practice and another $35 are required to try again. Students fare better on the second road test, where the failure rate has consistently been 21-22 per cent for the past decade. ICBC reports that in the first three years of the graduated licence program, the new driver crash rate dropped by 16 per cent.
TOM
FLETCHER B.C. Views
In 2003 the required learner and novice period were extended, and restrictions on the novice stage were increased. New driver crashes fell by another 28 per cent. Those restrictions include the number of passengers and a “zero tolerance” for alcohol. Impaired crash and injury statistics aren’t available for drivers in the graduated licence program, only fatalities. They grew as more new drivers were enrolled in the new system, to a high
of 24 in 2007, but that declined to 14 by 2012. There will always be young people who drive impaired, speed or make other fatal errors. But it’s difficult to argue that today’s system in B.C. is lenient. A couple of readers were concerned about the effect of higher rural speed limits on older drivers. One suggested that higher limits on rural highways are a poor mix with vacationing seniors hauling around oversized motorhomes, trailers and boats. Another cited the coming wave of retired baby boomers and added a likely increase in marijuanaimpaired drivers, all emboldened by the invitation to drive faster. B.C.’s medical health officers issued a letter denouncing the decision by Transportation Minister Todd Stone to raise speed limits. Provincial Health Officer Dr. Perry Kendall
said the research is clear that higher speeds increase the risk and severity of incidents. Then there is the government’s own position, articulated in a road safety strategy released last year by Attorney General Suzanne Anton. “Research is conclusive that at higher speeds, more people are killed and injured in the traffic system,” it states. “At lower speeds, fewer are killed and injured as a direct result of the safety buffer that lowered speeds create.” The strategy notes that new technologies such as adaptive cruise control are becoming available. B.C. is also testing electronic highway speed limit signs that change with weather and traffic conditions. Next comes self-driving vehicle systems, so drivers will be able to check their phones again. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

The Associated Press Ongoing contract negotiations are threatening the start of the new season of “The Big Bang Theory” but show creator Chuck Lorre isn’t worried. In fact, he’s eagerly talking about where the nerdy comedy is going in its eighth season, with big changes ahead for Penny, played by Kaley Cuoco. She’s looking to drop acting in favour of a brainier pursuit. “She gets a shot to be a pharmaceutical rep at Bernadette’s company,” said Lorre at the Television Critics Association’s press tour, according to the Hollywood Reporter. “She’s going to start making some money, which will unbalance (her relationship with Leonard) as the power shifts.... She’s going to find some confidence and self-esteem, which acting does not provide in great heaping doses.”

We can deliver your flyer right to the door!
Democracy struggling in B.C. The recent news that Trail residents will be allowed to vote on a new library and walking bridge is a good boost for democracy. It’s not often the people are asked about anything, their vote being the most important for politicians who then do what they want till next election. The U.S.A. ... with all its problems does hold lots of referendums and propositions on important issues, not in Canada or B.C. though. Do they think the masses of people don’t know enough to decide on how their money is spent? Or how their lives affected? Direct democracy, propositions referendums are the purest form of democracy. It’s no small wonder there are few, if any held in Canada, the government would have to follow and enforce the will of the people, and doing so would curtail and affect their often self-serving,
special interests reasons for being in power. Take the B.C. Government liquor cartel for instance, a mockery of free enterprise, unheard of in the modern, developed world etc, only in Canada you say! Not Quebec though. Last year the government asked B.C. residents if they would like more access to booze, like the rest of the world has, of course they would, not a word back after millions spent on their wasteful feeble attempts at what? Crumbs-offthe table were offered … more time at Happy Hour! Wow! Anti-free enterprise, antibusiness, the obsolete ancient, laughing-stock BC Liquor Control is a huge parasite, leech on the backs of the people of B.C. The lies and myths about taxes never stop, imagine the sale of the huge empire’s liquor

century of occupation following the defeat of the Nazis was one way to deal with a country more powerful than its neighbours but unable to conquer them. The more subtle western strategy was to foster European prosperity, for which a flourishing Germany was critical, but also to relieve them of their own defence. Germany might provide the battlespace for war with the Soviets, but NATO, and especially the U.S., would supply the tanks and, if needed, the nukes. NATO solved the Germans’ French problem and the disintegration of the Soviet Union took care of the Russian one. With the prosperity of the European Union, for the first time Germany had no external threats. Nothing, however sweet, lasts forever. The Russians are back, the economies of Europe are no longer flourishing. To date, Germany has kept its part of an unspoken bargain, to support the EU and to continue its own effective disarmament. But how much of its own prosperity is it willing to sacrifice to deal with the social crises of other countries – including France? The recent tension with the Americans over spying is a symptom of growing German independence. On this 100th anniversary of the start of 20th-century European carnage, we may be in for another round of geopolitical poker. RUSTEN, LAURA ‘ISABELLE’ – was born on November 19, 1929 in White Bear, Saskatchewan and passed away on July 19, 2014 at Columbia View Lodge. She lived in Trail for most of her adult life where she married Deke Rusten. Here she spent some time working in retail but devoted her life to raising her son Raymond. Isabelle is survived by her grandson Jeremy, great-grandson Mathias Rusten, Danielle and Gage Martin, brother- in-law Ralph Condon as well as many nieces and nephews; also some very dear friends Bev and Lucino Cocco, Dale and Ann Marie Rieberger, Ben and Amy Tantram and their families. At Isabelle’s request, there will not be a service. Gwen Ziprick of Alternatives Funeral and Cremation has been entrusted with the arrangements. incrEDIBLE green peppers that are flourishing in Hall Printing’s planters seemed to relish in the heavy downpour last Wednesday .The verdant veggies almost doubled in size overnight, and the extra watering turned a few green tomatoes to a glowing rosé by Thursday afternoon. Michelle Epp, customer service rep at the downtown Trail store, was checking out the bounty and noticed the cucumber plants sprouted many yellow flowers after a night of rain.

Teen will try again to swim Lake Erie
THE CANADIAN PRESS PORT DOVER, Ont. A 16-year-old girl who ended a swim across Lake Erie earlier than planned said she intends to finish the swim later this summer. Annaleise Carr ended her effort early Saturday
morning at Long Point, Ont., short of Port Dover where she had initially planned to celebrate the end of a 75-kilometre marathon swim. “The whole time we had one-to-four-feet waves so that was a big challenge for everyone,”
she said. Carr said the weather didn’t co-operate in general, but that the waters were warmer than when she crossed Lake Ontario. Two years ago, she swam across Lake Ontario at the age of 14,

CARLO BERGONZI
Italian tenor dies THE ASSOCIATED PRESS MILAN, Italy - Italian tenor Carlo Bergonzi, considered one of the most authoritative interpreters of Verdi’s operas, has died at the age of 90. The Italian Auxologic Institute in Milan on Monday confirmed Bergonzi’s death. Born in the province of Parma not far from Verdi’s hometown, Bergonzi started his studies at age 16 as a baritone, only to discover later that his musical gifts lay in the tenor range. Bergonzi’s international career took off after his 1956 debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where he sang the role of Radames in Verdi’s Aida. His Met career spanned 32 years and 22 roles. The Met recalled in a tribute that Bergonzi “was particularly praised for the beauty and warmth of his singing and for his elegant attention to style and phrasing.” He also sang nine seasons at La Scala in Milan and 21 seasons at the Arena open-air theatre in Verona.

Golf Fore a Cure set to tee off at Redstone BY TIMES STAFF Golf Canada’s Golf Fore the Cure is ready to tee-off at the Redstone Resort Golf Course on Thursday, and it’s not too late to sign up or make a donation. Organizers Deborah de Tremaudan and Mari Conradie encourage foursomes to join up and call the Redstone pro shop to make a tee time and join the fun. Last year in its inaugural round, over 80 golfers participated, raising over $3,200 for the B.C. Breast Cancer Foundation. “This was such a fun event, and from all the extra help this year it sounds like things

are on track for another great success,” said de Tremaudan in an email. The event will be a fourperson scramble, and players can enter as a team or individuals. Another goal of Golf Canada and Golf Fore the Cure to encourage new golfers to hit the fairways in an effort to “Grow the Game.” Among the many prizes from local businesses, there is also a special draw for a “New” golfer, as well as a trip to Las Vegas to see Celine Dion courtesy of Subaru, and a $10,000 hole-in-one competition from Intact. “Our volunteers have been out there busy gather-
ing some absolutely amazing prizes for this event,” added de Traumadin. “If you’re a skier, golfer, hiker, back country enthusiast, there could be prizes for all interests.” Golf Fore the Cure was created by Golf Canada to drive women’s participation in the game of golf by partnering with the Canadian Cancer Society in an effort to raise awareness and fundraising components to support the fight against breast cancer. BY TIMES STAFF After a great start, the Trail Major All Stars lost what proved to be a pivotal two-day game at the B.C. Little League Baseball championship in North Langley. In Trail’s match against Little Mountain on Wednesday, the game was called due to rain with Trail trailing 4-3 in the third inning. It resumed Thursday and a win would have guaranteed the All Stars a playoff spot, after going 3-1 in their first four games. But it was not to be. Following a scoreless fourth inning, the hardworking crew would manufacture a comeback in the sixth, however, the effort would come up short as Trail would fall 7-5 to the Vancouver rep. Trail then faced undefeated Vancouver South in its final game of the round robin on Friday, and lost to the tournament favourite 18-1, that included an eight-run outburst in the fifth inning. Defence was lacking, said Trail coach D. J. Ashman, but with Trail’s record at 3-3, they still had an outside chance of entering the playoffs if Beacon Hill, 2-3, were to lose to winless Forrest Hills on Saturday. Despite a late inning rally from Forrest Hills and a legitimate scare, Beacon Hill would emerge with a 12-10 victory. The Victoria team would get the playoff berth because they had defeated Trail earlier in the round robin, despite having an identical 3-3 record as Trail. “We watched the game today, and it was close to going our way,” said Ashman in a text. “3-3 got us nothing, which is disappointing, but (I’m) happy with everything too.” Trail entered the provincial championship with a lot of promise, and showed it immediately with a big win over White Rock in its opening match. The team played well and received some great performances from a number of players, including Reilly McKinnon who led the team at the plate and was second overall in batting, going 10-for-16 for a .625 average, with three doubles, two walks, and just one strike out. Austin Cox also finished in the top-10 for hitting with a .500 average, going 8-for-16 with a double, a home run, and three RBIs. In Sunday’s semifinal matches, White Rock, a team Trail had beaten 11-5 in their opening match, would go on to rout Little Mountain 10-4 and Vancouver South shut out Beacon Hill 12-0, setting up the Monday evening final between White Rock and South Van. South Vancouver has owned teams in this year’s provincials, outscoring opposition 79-9 over seven games, scoring more than 11 runs per game, with a team batting average of .439 and a slugging percentage of .636. South Van defeated White Rock in the round robin 13-3, but it could be a different White Rock team that is hungry to return to the Canadian Little League championship after losing in the final to Nepean, Ont. last year. Like South Van, White Rock went undefeated in the round robin, before losing the final match, 5-1. Due to the late start, the final score was unavailable at press time.

Roxburgh reclaims Senior title CHRISTINA LAKE- Doug Roxburgh adds to his collection of titles with a second consecutive win at the British Columbia Golf Men’s Senior Championship on Thursday after shooting -5 at Christina Lake Golf Club; while Gudmund Lindbjerg takes home top honours after a twohole play-off victory in the SuperSenior Championship and finishing 1-under-par. Former Trail golfer Brian De Biasio finished in eighth spot after shooting a 5-over par 77 in his final round for a three-day 216 total. Midway through the final round of competition it appeared that if the defending champion, Roxburgh, continued his pace, he would all but secure a victory. He had begun the day with a stroke advantage and after nine holes, with two birdies, was four strokes ahead of the next competitor. After the turn, however, Roxburgh ran into some trouble getting out of the left bunker on number 10 and double bogeyed for the first time in the Championship. The trouble didn’t end there, a double bogey again on the 12th left the Marine Drive Golf Club member tied at -5 with Lance Lundy. “I was playing quite well, very comfortable on the front nine and then hit a couple of sloppy shots on the back nine starting on the 10th hole and just let Lance and
some others right back into it,” said Roxburgh. “I just had to work hard to make some pars coming in. That’s golf, I’m fortunate to get away with that one, I think.” The veteran competitor showed his composure after the glitches, making par for the remainder of his round. His equanimity combined with a little bit of luck allowed him to capture the top spot. Jim Shaw, of Mission, was also briefly tied with Roxburgh and Lundy at -5 with only a few holes left to play. Shaw was one-under at the turn and played strong until closing out his round with back-to-back bogeys. Shaw finished at -3 in third. The trio will represent British Columbia at the Canadian Men’s Senior Championship at Capilano Golf and Country Club in West Vancouver on Aug. 26 - 29. The Super-Senior Championship came down to a play off for the title after four-time back-to-back BC Senior Men’s Champion, Lindbjerg, and tournament low scorer, Kent Brown, each finished at one-under. The pair both made par on 18 and headed to number 10 for the second hole of the play off. Each made straight shots down the fairway from the tee, but Brown’s second shot found the left bunker and he ultimately bogeyed the hole. Lindbjerg made two putts for par and the win.

lost seven tournaments in a row in which he led after 54 holes. He went into the final round with a threestroke cushion but never found traction. He shot 69 to come second at 16-under 264. “I kind of controlled my own destiny,” said Furyk. “I’ve got to shoot three or four (under par) and it would have been impossible to catch me, or darn near it. “I left the door open with even par on the front nine and Tim took advantage and shot 30 on the back.” Furyk has not won since a victory at the 2010 Players Championship that gave him the FedEx Cup title and PGA play-
er of the year honours. He fell short in a bid to join elite company in Tommy Armour, Sam Snead and Lee Trevino by becoming the fourth player to win the Canadian Open three times after his victories in 2006 and 2007. Instead, it went to the stocky Clark, the long putter user who needed a win after battling elbow trouble in recent years. The win moved him from 85th to 27th in FedEX Cup standings and gave him entry into next week’s World Golf Championship event in Akron, Ohio and into the PGA championship. He also gets fully exempt status on the PGA Tour through the 2015-16 season.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS TORONTO - Mike Tyson says he’s met with Oscar-winning actor Jamie Foxx about collaborating on a possible biopic on his life. “Me and Jamie Foxx have been talking and he’s willing to take that role and portray me as Mike Tyson, doing my life story,” the former heavyweight boxing champion said Friday during a conference call to promote an upcoming Toronto date for his one-man show, “Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth.” ”I think he’s splendid because he’s really up to par. I think he would do a magnificent job.“ Further brainstorming of the project will “happen very shortly,” he added. “I saw him the other night and we discussed it,” Tyson said. “He doesn’t have the physicality but he will. He’s able to ... get bulky, so he’s capable of doing it in the future.” Tyson will bring his solo production to Toronto’s Air Canada Centre on Sept. 10. Tickets go on sale July 31. In the 90-minute show, he gives an unvarnished account of the highs and lows of his life - from his troubled upbringing in Brooklyn and famed boxing career, to his time in prison and addiction issues. Oscar-nominated filmmaker Spike Lee directed the stage show, which has already run on Broadway and across the United States. He also turned it into an HBO special that aired last November. Tyson’s wife, Kiki, wrote the script that includes room for ad-libbing. “I don’t do shows for any kind of therapy,” said Tyson. “I do it because I enjoy doing it, and I do it because it’s art. It’s changed me a great deal because I can’t walk 10 minutes without anybody asking me when the next show is going to appear.” Now 48 and retired from the ring, Tyson insisted he’s not the same intimidating guy he was when he was the youngest heavyweight boxing champion of the world: “Not even a little bit. That guy doesn’t even exist no more. “Right now, I’m just living life day by day black, broke and ugly,” laughed Tyson.

MONday & Movies Mind over muscle ‘Lucy’ bests ‘Hercules’ THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES - Luc Besson’s “Lucy” proved mind can overpower muscle, topping a remake of “Hercules” by director Brett Ratner at the box office on the weekend. The Universal Pictures-released movie starring Scarlett Johansson as an accidental psychokinetic took in $44 million in North American movie theatres over the weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. “Hercules,” starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and produced by Paramount Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, brought down an estimated $29 million. Universal’s president of domestic distribution, Nikki Rocco, said audiences were attracted to the original story about the main character gaining superhuman powers by using more and more of her brain. People also wanted to see Johansson in an action role, something she’s done more frequently in movies like “The Island” (2005), “Iron Man 2” (2010), “The Avengers” (2012) and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” (2014). “The main reasons for coming to see the film were the story, and then Scarlett,” Rocco said. “She’s very diversified in what she does. Luc brought out the best of her in this movie.” Meanwhile, Johnson’s draw with men, women and children helped “Hercules” power into the No. 2 spot. In addition to its domestic haul, the film brought in $28.7 million from Russia, Australia, Britain, Malaysia and other countries in Asia. Despite the two films’ solid performances, the summer box office is still down by around one-fifth compared to last year, according to Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst with Rentrak. That’s partly because one would-be huge performer, “Fast & Furious 7” was postponed from its July 11 release due to the death of actor Paul Walker, he said. This summer also lacked some other blockbuster sequels like last year’s “Despicable Me 2.” Another film that opened in wide release over the weekend was the Rob Reiner-directed romantic comedy “And So It Goes,” starring Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton, which collected an estimated $4.6 million, according to distributor Clarius Entertainment.

Tell friend about STD rather than ending sex life Mailbox

er I should tell him I have an STD and let him decide whether he wants a “friend without benefits.” What do you suggest? -- K. Dear K.: It seems a shame to end your sex life because you fear transmitting an STD. There are ways to avoid that. And your future partner may be more understanding than you realize. Please contact the American Sexual Health Association (ashasexualhealth.org) for information on all STDs, including herpes, and for support in communicating with potential partners. Dear Annie: How do you tell a doctor that his office is dirty? My
have an assistant or receptionist? Direct your complaint to that person. If there is no one else in his office, please have the courage to speak up during your next visit. Tell the doctor that his office could use a good cleaning, and suggest that his current cleaning service be replaced. If things don’t change, report him to your local health department. Dear Annie: My daughter had the same experience as the son of “Upset Dad.” In seven years on the softball teams in middle and high school, she never missed a practice. Yet I can count on one hand the number of times that she played more than one inning in a game. Most of the time, she sat on the bench, while kids who habitually missed practice got to play all the time. My daughter loved softball so much that she begged me not to say anything to the
coach, and I respected her wishes until the day after her graduation, when I penned a polite but critical letter to the coach, athletic director and superintendent. Not one of them had the courtesy to reply. I’m a teacher. The
field is a coach’s classroom. If I refused to call on students who came to class prepared, raised their hands and wanted to participate, I certainly would be dismissed. In school sports, all students who attend practices regularly, follow team rules
and want to play should have an equal opportunity to do so. -- English Teacher and One-Time Sports Mom Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column.

physician’s office is full of dust, cobwebs, smudged fingerprints and dirty sinks. It looks as if it hasn’t been cleaned in years. He is a good doctor and has helped me many times, but I can hardly walk into that office without gagging. What should I do? -Love the Doc, Not His Office Dear Love the Doc: You have to tell him. All of that dirt means that equipment that needs to be sterile isn’t, and who knows what germs you are breathing in during an exam? This puts your health at risk. Also, how many patients has he lost because of the condition of his office? And if your doctor cannot see the dirt surrounding him, he may have a vision problem that needs correcting, although it’s more likely he either doesn’t have a cleaning staff or they don’t do a good job. Dear Annie: I am a 68-year-old woman who has been divorced for more than 30 years. I haven’t been in an intimate relationship for the past 10. Last year, I discovered that I have genital herpes. The doctor said I may have had it for years before experiencing symptoms. I was devastated. When I have an outbreak, I take medication that shortens the discomfort, and I decided not to have intimate contact anymore. I’m quite busy with my retirement lifestyle and very content. Here’s the problem: Through a friend, I recently met an interesting man my age. I don’t want to tell him about my personal medical history, but I also don’t want him to think I’m a prude. We went out casually once, and he has called since, but I have put him off. I can’t decide whether I should see him again and wheth-

The Kootenay Robusters Dragon Boat Team was in fine form for the Kelowna Dragon Boat Festival held July 19-20 in Waterfront Park. As usual, many of the fifteen women’s teams taking part were made up of young, competitive athletes, putting the Robusters, with an average age of 61, at a significant disadvantage. Despite this, the Robusters won their first three races and posted times that resulted in the opportunity to take part in the women’s championship final. In that race, the team placed fourth. The team would like to remind breast cancer survivors (and women who would like to become associate paddlers) interested in joining the Robusters to call 250-362-5289 to get more information. Above; Coach Trish Ostlund drums the Robusters across the finish line in first place
