A thunderstorm with strong winds ripped through the East Kootenay on Wednesday, July 23, downing trees and power lines, and damaging property at Eaglesnest RV Resort in Moyie. The storm, which caused flash flooding in Kamloops (see more on Page 4), hit Cranbrook and Kimberley at around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. “As a result of the storm that hit the East Kootenay (Wednesday) night, approximately 3,800 customers in Moyie, Kingsgate, Yahk, Mayook, Jaffray, Baynes

Police are not releasing a name, but are saying that remains found Wednesday in a Nelson park may be those of a 27-year-old Cranbrook man. Nelson RCMP recovered human remains in a forested area in the city. On July 23, the RCMP were advised of the remains in the area between Bealby Point Road and the Rails to Trails near Red Sands Beach on the edge of Nelson. At around 5 p.m. that day, the police and the BC Coroners Service, with
the assistance of Nelson Search and Rescue, were able to retrieve the remains. There was identification located with the remains, suggesting they may be those of a 27-year-old male from the Cranbrook area. It is believed that the body has been there for several years. The name is not being released until identification can be confirmed and next of kin can be notified. Foul play is not suspected. The BC Coroners Service, with the assistance of the Nelson RCMP, is continuing its investigation.

Province defends shift from Martin Mars water bombers New small planes more flexible, deliver water twice as fast Jeff Nagel Black Press
The provincial government is defending its unpopular decision to halt B.C.’s use of the veteran Martin Mars water bombers in favour of newer aircraft to fight wildfires. The B.C. Wildfire Management Branch responded as campaigners closed in on a target of 20,000 signatures on a petition urging the premier to reinstate the 1940s-era amphibious plane. Organizer Chris Alemany plans to deliver the petition Thursday to Christy Clark’s constituency office in West Kelowna, where residents had been under evacuation order from the Smith Creek wild-
fire. Critics argue the province is spending more money to get less firefighting service than it had with the famous Martin Mars planes. B.C. instead has contracted the use of four Air Tractor “Fire Boss” water-scooping amphibious planes from the Conair Group of Abbotsford for $2.5 million per season. The much smaller aircraft are more flexible because they can operate from more than 1,700 lakes compared to just 113 with the Mars. The new planes can also drop water, foam or retardant on a fire, with an ability to deliver 3,025 litres on a seven-minute turnaround, compared to 19,000 li-
tres with the Mars on a 19-minute round trip. The branch said in statement the new Fire Bosses delivered fire suppressant twice as fast during the recent West Kelowna fire – 586,000 litres in 11.3 hours – as the Martin Mars dropped during the 2003 Kelowna fire. “Over the past six weeks, the new Fire Boss aircraft have actioned more fires than the Martin Mars did in six years.” Today there’s only one Martin Mars left in the province, owned by the Coulson Group on Vancouver Island. According to the province, it offered the firm an “as when needed” contract for the 2014 fire season but got no
response. The government statement noted the Mars engines are prone to breakdowns, while if one Fire Boss breaks down the other three can stay in service. Separate planes can also be split up to attack multiple different targets at once, which officials say is particularly useful in fighting a series of fires after intense lightning. The Mars, meanwhile, has a large drop pattern that the branch said can make it unsafe to use close to ground crews, who must stop work during a drop, risking the escape of a fire that could have been contained during the initial attack phase. Bat BioBlitz may help Canada’s endangered bats Submit ted
Bat biologists converged in B.C.’s Flathead River Valley this week. They hoped to gain new information to advance bat conservation in B.C.’s southeast and to ultimately minimize the impacts of White Nose Syndrome, a mysterious disease that has killed millions of North American bats.
The four-day Bat BioBlitz, organized by conservation groups in B.C. and Alberta and led by Wildlife Conservation Society Canada’s bat biologist, Dr. Cori Lausen, built on an initial inventory of Flathead bats that Lausen conducted last summer during a BioBlitz. That inventory detected two species of
bats in the Flathead that are considered federally endangered by the Committee on Endangered Wildlife in Canada: little brown myotis and northern myotis. “In the southeast corner of B.C., the Flathead may be the gateway for entry of White Nose Syndrome into B.C., and it is thus ur-

gent to start monitoring bats in this area,” said Lausen. “Significant bat hibernation caves have never been found in B.C. and yet the Flathead is surrounded by karst and has the deepest cave in all of Canada.” Scientists have known for a long time that B.C.’s Flathead River Valley – adjacent to Waterton Glacier International Peace Park – is a hotspot for plant and large mammal biodiversity. But very little was known about the bats, birds and smaller creatures that inhabit the valley until conserva-
tion groups and scientists, including from the Royal BC Museum, organized BioBlitzes in 2012 and 2013. White Nose Syndrome, responsible for the deaths of more than seven million North American bats, is a poorly-understood fungal disease that kills bats while they hibernate. The disease is moving from east to west and has reached the Great Plains but is not yet found in B.C. “It’s very important that we understand what bat species are present in B.C. and where they hibernate before White Nose Syndrome arrives,” said
Lausen. “Once we’ve established what bats are present in the Flathead, we will know what types of habitats need to be protected for bat populations to recover following White Nose dieback, and optimistically we may be able to help bats survive the disease.” “We’re optimistic that the first extensive bat inventory in the Flathead will lead to a greater understanding of how to help these endangered bats survive,” said Wildsight Executive Director John Bergenske. “This work underscores the biological importance of the Flathead
River Valley and the urgent need to protect it permanently.” Wildsight, the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative, Sierra Club BC and CPAWS BC are working to protect the Flathead permanently with a National Park in the southeastern one-third and a Wildlife Management Area in the rest of the valley and adjoining habitat. Mining and energy development is prohibited in the Flathead but the globally-significant valley is now under threat from intensive logging, road-building and rock quarrying, Wildsight said.

Chaos in Cranbrook grocery store parking lot Confused elderly driver crashes into business, then smashes cars parked at local Save-On

Extensive damage was caused by a confused driver in the parking lot at Save-On on Thursday, July 24. According to RCMP, an 86-year-old male driver in a minivan initially crashed through the window at a tanning salon in the strip mall
beside Save-On. The driver then backed up, hitting five parked vehicles. “The vehicle then exited the parking lot, came out onto Victoria Avenue and swung around back onto the sidewalk before coming to rest against a short retaining wall,” said Cpl. Chris Newel.
Police, ambulance and fire all responded to the scene. Nobody was injured in the incident, but the driver was assessed by BC Ambulance. “Police believe driver confusion was a factor in the collision and charges under the Motor Vehicle Act are pending,” said Newel.

Columbia River-Revelstoke MLA Norm Macdonald was given a new role as critic for energy and mines in NDP leader John Horgan’s new shadow cabinet. “I’d been doing forestry, which I very much enjoyed for five years, but I think it’s time now to learn other things,” said Macdonald in an interview with the Times Review. Macdonald had been the critic for forests, lands and natural resource operations since 2009. The shift will see Macdonald pitted against Bill Bennett, the MLA for East Kootenay and Minister of Energy and Mines, whom he has sparred with many times in the legislature. Macdonald said he is looking forward to going up against his East Kootenay rival. “On one issue after another we’ve battled and I certainly am excited about the prospect to add to that,” he said. Horgan, who was acclaimed leader of the NDP in May, announced his shadow cabinet in a news release Wednesday morning. The shadow cabinet is divided into two sectors — one for the economy, and one for stronger communities. Macdonald is part of the economic sector team. Macdonald’s main focus will be on mining policy. He said that like his work in forestry, he will be focused on holding the government to account on what is happening to the land base. He brought up the recent landmark Supreme Court ruling that granted the Tsilhquot’in First Nation title over its land. “The Tsqilhquot’in ruling raises lots of questions that the government has to understand and deal intelligently with,” he said. “Our role as the opposition is to push the government to work hard on these issues and to do the work they need to do to solve problems for these people. “There’s no doubt that anything on the land base requires a sophisti-

He will be working with Adrian Dix, the critic for BC Hydro, Bruce Ralston, the critic for natural gas development, and George Heyman, the critic for green economy and technology. “When I was sitting down to see how I would parse out the area that I just represented over seven or eight years, it struck me the best course of action based on my experience was to make sure we had people singularly focused on elements of energy policy so they could do a better job of dismantling the mess the Liberals have made of it,” said Horgan, who was the critic for energy and mines prior to becoming party leader. Macdonald said both natural gas and BC Hydro policy fascinate him. “There’s so much there that has been said that doesn’t stand up to scrutiny, but the premier seems to be getting away with it for the most part so far, so we’ll see if we can push her on that,” he said. He said he’s looking forward to working with his colleagues on the portfolio and sharing his expertise with others. The shadow cabinet is meeting in Vancouver Friday.
“The storm caused considerable and widespread damage to power lines, poles and other BC Hydro infrastructure. Trees and other debris falling onto power lines and broken hydro poles were the main cause for the power outages.” The weather station at Canadian Rockies International Airport recorded wind gusts of 46 kilometres an hour, but Environment Canada meteorologist Doug Lundquist said the wind could have been up to 60 kilometres an hour elsewhere in the area. By comparison, the July 2012 wind storm that hit Cranbrook contained wind gusts of 107 kilometres an hour. In Moyie, as many as 20 trailers at Eaglesnest RV Resort were damaged by falling trees, said the resort’s office manager Ann Wood. “We did have extensive damage out here,” she said. “Thankfully it wasn’t the long weekend when there is more people here. There were no injuries.” Trees fell on trailer roofs and on one vehicle. “There was people in the trailers but no one got hurt. The trees were on top of the roof or in

Trees fell on power lines in Cranbrook, but few Hydro customers lost power. the side of them. “The trees were just swirling; it sounded like a freight train coming through.” The resort had done some remediation work since the July 2012 storm that potentially saved a lot of property damage, Wood said. “We had done a lot of tree clearing out here, so in the area where they did that there was no damage whatsoever.” Meanwhile, BC Hydro was busy Wednesday night and Thursday restoring power to affected customers. “Crews were immediately dispatched and
worked throughout the night. “Additional BC Hydro and contractor crews from the Okanagan, Invermere and Cranbrook were called in to assist with restoration work. “Crews are working 16-hour days to safely restore power as quickly as possible,” said Masters. Very few customers in Cranbrook experienced an outage as a result of the storm, and there were no outages in Kimberley. On Thursday, outages continued for people in Sparwood and Moyie. BC Hydro worked to re-
store power to critical services first, then to larger neighbourhoods and high density areas, and finally to smaller pockets and wider spread customers. BC Hydro expected that power would be restored throughout the region by 6 p.m. Thursday evening. “BC Hydro would like to thank the public for their patience and understanding while crews continue to work safely to restore power,” said Masters. An informative, fun, and productive morning was shared by members of the Cranbrook Community Forest Society and the East Kootenay Invasive Plant Council, led by Cathy Conroy and Linda McVetty, on Saturday, July 19. Cathy gave an overview of the characteristics of invasive plant species in the East Kootenay region and how to identify them. After Cathy’s presentation, the group headed out, armed with gloves, garbage bags and digging tools and spent over two hours pulling knapweed, dalmation toadflax, thistle, gumweed, St. John’s wort, burdock, and hound’s tongue. At the end of the morning participants were able to confidently spot these common invasive species for future treatments. Ten big garbage bags were filled with invasive plants that will not be going to seed now in the forest. Well worth the effort! KAMLOOPS, B.C. — Cleanup is underway in Kamloops, B.C., as the southern Interior city dries out from flash floods that dumped 25 millimetres of rain in less than half an hour. Environment Canada says the rainfall deluged the city in less than half an hour Wednesday afternoon, gushing down roads that quickly resembled rivers. Mayor Peter Milobar says it’s too early to estimate damage or tell how many buildings were flooded, but he says a lot of debris remains across roads and tossed onto lawns. Milobar says Transportation Minister Todd Stone, who represents the Kamloops area, has already reached out, saying his ministry could consider assistance if damage is too extensive. First responders say dispatchers were overwhelmed when the storm hit at about 2:15 p.m. Wednesday. Crews answered calls ranging from flooded basements to drivers stranded atop floating vehicles and a boy washed into the Thompson River, from where he was rescued.

City of Cranbrook to host open house on fluoridation of water before municipal vote in November Arne Petryshen Townsman Staff
The City of Cranbrook is preparing for a November 15 municipal election, and part of that will include a referendum on fluoridation of the water supply. Since 1966, Cranbrook has added fluoride to the water supply in the form of hydrofluorosilicic acid. The city put out information on the referendum recently with the notice that it will host a public open house with Canadian health experts on both sides of the fluoride debate talking about the subject. The exact date, time and location will be announced in early September, but it will likely occur in early October. “The City is informing residents about the water system and water fluoridation, and will host an open house on this topic in early October,” the statement from the city noted. The actual referendum question will be: “Are you in favour of Council adopting City of Cranbrook Cease Fluoridation Bylaw No. 3799, 2014, which authorizes stopping the addition of fluoride to the municipal water supply effective January 1, 2015?” In the referendum, a “yes” vote means you are in favour of eliminating fluoride, while a “no” vote means continuing to add fluoride. The city also put up a brief history of fluoridation on its website. Fluoridation began in Cranbrook after a referendum in 1966. The city noted that at the time fluoride was gaining recognition worldwide as a cost-effective way to reduce cavities and many North American communities started to add it to water systems from 1940 onward. Fluoride can be found in a host of everyday prod-
ucts, including dental care products, tea, processed food and drink, mechanically deboned meat, teflon pans, pesticides and fluorinated pharmaceuticals. Cranbrook Public Works uses a small metering pump at the Phillips Reservoir to transfer the fluoride from a storage tank in the potable water stream. The city said it aims for a concentration of 0.8 mg/l(ppm), which is within the guidelines set by Health Canada — between 0.7 mg/l and 1.5 mg/l. Cranbrook is one of six communities in the province that still adds fluoride to the water supply, which accounts for three per cent of the population of the province. The other communities are Fort Saint John, Prince George, Sparwood and Terrace. Prince Rupert is listed as a community that adds fluoride, but according to its website currently doesn’t as it needs to upgrade the fluoride system at some point. are monitored as a matter of course in all Western countries, so the German authorities put the spy under surveillance, and almost immediately they discovered that he was already selling his information to the Americans. What is clear from all this is that the American intelligence agencies are completely out of control. They are so powerful that even after the revelations of massive abuse in the past year very few politicians in Washington dare to support radical cuts in their budgets or the scope of their operations. They collect preposterous amounts of irrelevant information, alienating friends and allies and abusing the civil rights of their own citizens in the process. The German intelligence agency (there’s only one) doesn’t behave like that. It chooses its targets carefully, it operates within the law, and it doesn’t spy on allies. Why the big difference? It’s because the annual budget of the Bundesnachrichtendienst is just under $1 billion, and it employs only 6,000 people. The United States has only five times as many people as Germany, but its “intelligence community” includes seventeen agencies with a total budget of $80 billion dollars. There are 854,000 Americans with top-secret security clearances. The American intelligence community grew fat and prospered through four decades of Cold War and two more decades of the “War on Terror”. It is now so big, so rich, so powerful that it can do practically anything it wants. And often it does stuff just because it can, even if it’s totally counter-productive. There is nothing like fresh picked corn with kernels so crisp, or the smell of vine-ripened tomatoes, harvested at their peak and purchased from a local farmers’ market. With over 125 farmers’ markets spread across British Columbia, chances are there is one near you! Items available at the market change with the growing season. Buy your favorite foods each week but try something new too. If your local market is like my favorite one, there are often free samples, so you can try before you buy. Try preparing your veggies in different ways such as on the grill, pureed in a soup, or blended in a smoothie. The options are endless! Fresh herbs are also a great find to
add to your favorite recipe. Markets are as different as the communities they serve. Some are festive events with artists, musicians, and a huge variety of fresh produce and locally made products. Others might feature a few stalls with one farmer supplying most of the produce. Besides providing an abundance of locally grown vegetables and fruit to help keep you healthy, markets also contribute to the health of the community. They are a great place to socialize, enjoy the fresh air, listen to some music, and meet the farmer that grows your food. Local farms employ local people - when you buy from a producer in your area, you support the local economy. This summer check out the markets in your area. Visiting a market makes a great
outing for kids, seniors or out of town guests. Some communities even offer free public transportation to the market. Don’t forget to bring bags and a cooler for the trip home! Are you wondering where to find the closest market, what is in season, or if your market offers the Nutrition Coupon Program? Perhaps you need a recipe? Check out the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets’ website at http://www.bcfarmersmarket.org/ before you head off to the market. Maybe I will see you at a market this summer! Breaking barriers: equipment
My name is Raux, and I have a disability. This is the seventh in a weekly series about living with a disability in a community like Cranbrook. What to do with equipment you no longer need? Some providers will supply equipment for the lifetime of the user and require it to be returned when you no longer need it. As for the equipment you’ve purchased you can sell it, donate it to a loan service or give it away. Loan Services: The Red Cross and other services have equipment available for temporary use; this is helpful for visitors as well. The Red Cross does require a referral from a health care professional to acquire equipment. Sell or Donate: Occasionally equipment will come available in the classified ads; this can include lifts, recliners, hospital beds and wheelchairs. If the previous owner decides not to sell their equipment it will typically be donated to a loan service. Recycle: Unfortunately there is no recycle program for gently used items. Whenever possible, I will re-home my equipment; I don’t want to profit or have someone charged for something they really need. Anyone with health issues knows this is a lifetime investment

so anytime I can pass things down, I will without reservation, as long as the equipment is clean, safe and in good working condition. Facilities: I’ve often wondered what becomes of the patient’s equipment in long-term care facilities; do the families sell, donate or leave it with the facility? If they leave it with the facility does it get distributed amongst the patients that could ben-
efit from it or is it gathering dust in a closet while people purchase new equipment for shortterm use thus completing the cycle? Purchasing: If you are in the market for equipment an occupational and physiotherapist can work with you to assess your needs and support requirements. They will also accompany you to a retailer to test the equipment to ensure it is the
right equipment for you. If you decide to forgo a therapist’s guidance for more basic items then shop around and do your research to make sure you are paying a fair price and that the equipment will work for your intended purpose. An example is grabber sticks: some have a two-prong claw and others have more of an opposable thumb, some can’t support any-
thing heavier than a remote or the tips are awkward for picking up things with rounded edges or anything small. The right piece of equipment or technology can be a huge help. Sometimes you can even repurpose common items to suit your needs; for example, a drumstick is great for reaching buttons in elevators, etc. Sincerely, Raux

The greens were pretty tough, and hitting your approach shots onto the green, that was hard. You had to place it on the right place. “My game wasn’t very good. I definitely didn’t play as strong as I could’ve, but our team came through.”
Kevin Nesbitt, based out of the Champion Lakes Golf and Country Club in Fruitvale, served as the Kootenay zone coach. “To me, they did really well. They played well and had some fun,” Nesbitt said. “Everybody had higher expectations for themselves, personally, which is kind of a nice thing. You always want to
do better for sure. When it came down to it, they came out with silvers.” All eight members of the team had to qualify through tournaments in the East and West Kootenay. Buchy has been golfing, or swinging a golf club, since she was a young kid and she jumped at the opportunity to go to an event as big as the Summer Games. “I always thought about it and wanted to, and when I got asked to go I was pretty happy and excited about it,” she said. Having three other local golfers helped bring the team close, she added. “I think that helped to make the atmosphere more comfortable and stuff,” Buchy said, “but once our team met—when we met the West Kootenay kids—we all got along so good, like we’ve known each other for a while.” The Fraser Valley came out on the top of the podium with a combined score of 420 on a team that included the boys individual winner Sy Lovan out of Surrey. Fraser River Delta took the third podium spot and the bronze medal with a score of 443.

Cochrane wins Canada’s first gold medal at Commonwealth Games C ANADIAN PRESS
GLASGOW - Swimmer Ryan Cochrane has Canada’s first gold medal of the Commonwealth Games. The Victoria native won the 400-metre freestyle event in three minutes 43.46 seconds, 0.63 seconds ahead of Australia’s David McKeon. He broke his own Canadian record that he set at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. England’s James Guy was third in 3:44.58. Cochrane won gold in the same event four years ago at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi to go with another gold in the 1,500 metres. The 25-year-old won bronze
in the 1,500-metre freestyle in Beijing and improved on that performance four years later with a silver in the same event at the London Games. He also has six medals from the world championships. Later Thursday, Canada’s women’s 4x100 freestyle team won bronze. The team of Montreal’s Victoria Poon, Alyson Ackman and Sandrine Mainville and Toronto’s Michelle Williams finished in 3:40.00. Australia won gold while England took silver. Canada has three medals on the first day of the Games after Kirsten Sweetland won silver in triathlon.

ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I have two siblings with whom I have shared most everything. Now that my dad is slipping mentally and physically, we have decided to sell his home and move him into a memory care facility. My two siblings simply ignored my recommendation that we give the listing to our real estate agent. Annie, within the past 15 years, my wife and I have sold three homes and purchased two through our very capable Realtor, while my siblings have not been in the housing market for 20 years. Instead, my brother wants his newly licensed Realtor friend to sell the house, even though she has never sold one. My sister wants her son-inlaw, who recently graduated college and works at his mother’s real estate firm, to handle the sale. I recognize that there are individual interests here. But the additional problem is which facility my father goes to. Two are close to all of us. But my brother and sister want to move Dad into an independent living facility we visited three years ago that does not include an assisted living option and is farther away. I do not want a confrontation, just a fair shake for our beloved father, but I am afraid I have no input. Any suggestions? -- Under the Table in Indiana Dear Indiana: Is there an unbiased friend or relative who would act as a mediator? It might help for you and your siblings to be in the same room discussing these options with someone whose opinion all of you trust and respect. Before this situation produces resentment and finger pointing, please ask your siblings to consider this option to avoid ill will down the road. Dear Annie: I am a woman in my 50s, and I used to have bad acne. My skin is mainly cleared up, but I’m left with rough patches and brown spots. I try to conceal it with makeup, but several times a day, I catch someone staring at my skin. Their eyes immediately turn away when I see them looking, but the embarrassment is deep. I don’t wear much makeup, just a tinted moisturizer, as I don’t want a mask. I’ve tried more coverage, and people still look. I realize they aren’t trying to be mean. They can’t help themselves. My own children have done it. It has made me reclusive, and I only like to go out when it’s night and the lights are dim. I can’t afford a chemical peel. Please tell me what I can say to these people or whether I should just try to ignore it. -- Ashamed Dear Ashamed: There is no reason to be ashamed of your face. You already know that people aren’t trying to be cruel, so it would help if you could accept your face as it is. What do you care what strangers think of your skin? And please make an appointment with a dermatologist to see what other remedies are available in your price range. Dear Annie: I read the letter from “Different Gods,” who is pagan and doesn’t want to celebrate Christmas with her boyfriend’s parents. I believe she is showing a lack of respect. My stepfather married my mother when we were adults. He was Jewish, and we are Christian. Every year, he purchased Christmas gifts for everyone and participated in Christmas dinner. We also helped him celebrate Hanukkah by lighting the candles and eating traditional Jewish foods. We didn’t have to believe in each other’s traditions. It is a sign of respect to participate. Going to church and praying are not necessary. Obituaries Iris May MacFarlane 1924 - 2014 It is with deep sorrow that the family of Iris MacFarlane announces her passing on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at Joseph Creek Extended Care Facility in Cranbrook at 90 years of age.
Iris was born on January 13, 1924 at the St. Eugene Hospital in Cranbrook. Prior to her marriage to Donald, Iris worked as a bank teller at the Imperial Bank for many years. She enjoyed reading and collecting knickknacks. Iris is survived by her son Kenneth William MacFarlane (Janet), grandchildren Sean and Caitlin all of Otis Orchards, WA; sister Deannie Holmes (Albert); and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband Donald MacFarlane; parents Margaret and William Alward; sisters Joyce Ross, and Buddy Ferguson; brother Raymond Alward and grandson Travis Ian Eugene MacFarlane. The family would like to thank Dr. Dawson and the staff at Joseph Creek Extended Care Facility, Mt. Stevens Unit, where Iris was a resident since 2007. A private family graveside service will take place in the Fort Steele Cemetery on July 26, 2014 at 3:00 pm. Mom married the love of her life, Ruben Siemens (also a Hepburn boy), on September 30, 1944. After Dad was discharged from the Army Mom and Dad moved to the Fraser Valley where Mom remained for the next 65 years. Mom’s three boys were born in BC – David (1947), Laird (1953) and Mark (1955). Mom moved to the FW Green Home in Cranbrook in 2011. Mom was a great mother and she was an even better mother-in-law. However, she was best at being a grandmother – playing in the sandbox with her grandchildren while she was still dressed in her Sunday church clothes. Mom loved being Dad’s wife (they were planning their 50th wedding anniversary when Dad died), loved animals of all sorts especially horses and loved throwing parties for family and friends.

Ideal candidates will have interprovincial qualifications plus additional technical training in an appropriate specialty. Preference will be given to those with previous pulp mill experience. The ability to work within a flexible work environment is necessary. The successful candidate will bring a proven ability to collaborate with Supervisors, Tradesmen, and Operations to achieve outstanding results and will have solid knowledge of world-class maintenance practices, including predictive and preventive maintenance. E/I AREA ENGINEER An opportunity exists for an Electrical and Instrumentation Area Engineer to further improve the reliability and performance of our mill. Work duties include the planning and implementation of Capital and Major Maintenance projects in the mill designed to upgrade and continually improve our performance. The successful candidate will work closely with Operations and Maintenance to develop and implement short and long term preventive maintenance programs for the Electrical Systems in the mill and will also help develop and implement a long term hardware and software strategy for Process Control improvement. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of collaboration with Operations, Supervisors, and Tradesmen to achieve outstanding results. He or she will have an Engineering Degree or Technical qualification, in addition to three or more years in a heavy industry setting. The initial priority for this role will be the co-ordination of an RCM process and a PM Optimization program for our assets. Other responsibilities will include the on-going analysis of equipment and operational issues and the implementation of reliability improvements, utilizing our CMMS to identify and correct trends in equipment performance and cost, managing the RCFA program and advising on and promoting precision maintenance techniques. BRANDON, Man. — Not since Sylvester and Tweety has a cat’s determination to catch a bird caused such a predicament. A ginger-and-white feline nicknamed Butterscotch has been spotted numerous times with a small bird feeder stuck on its head in a Brandon, Man., neighbourhood. Witnesses say the cat can see out of one eye and runs away when approached. They say there’s no way it can eat or drink, and are worried about how long it can survive. “He was meowing a little bit as if he wanted somebody to help him, but he’s a stray and he’s obviously afraid of people, so I wasn’t able to get near him,� said Colleen Gareau, who first spotted the distressed cat Wednesday morning. Staff with the city’s pound have tried to catch Butterscotch. So have volunteers from a local animal group, who
have been baiting traps with tuna, sardines and cat food. The traps are ones used for larger animals because the cat wouldn’t fit into a regular cat trap because of the feeder. So far, Butterscotch has given everyone the slip. “It spooks whenever it hears anything because it doesn’t know what’s really approaching, so any noise, the cat runs,� said Toni Gramiak of the Brandon and Area Lost Animals group. “We’re surprised it’s not running into things, but somehow it’s figured out how to get around.� Witnesses say the cat can even jump onto fences with the feeder on its head. Gareau said the cat had been a regular visitor to her yard for some time and gets along well with her own cat, Emmie, which she lets out into her yard on a leash. “He probably just put
his head in — I don’t think he was interested in food — but snooping around and it just got caught on his neck. And he was shaking his head. He just cannot get it off.� Gareau assumed the cat belonged to someone in her neighbourhood. But despite all the attention the fettered feline has generated in Brandon, no one has stepped forward to claim the animal. Gramiak said when the cat is captured, it will be checked for an ear tattoo or microchip identification. As it is right now, it’s hard to identify the animal when no one can properly see its face. Gramiak has even been putting tuna juice on trees to try to lure Butterscotch back to Gareau’s yard. The last time Gareau saw the cat free of the feeder was a week ago. “At the very most, the cat has not had food or water for about a week,� Gramiak said.

BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. — Police have released surveillance video of a trio of naked thieves stealing 60 hamburgers from an eatery in southwest Florida. Police say the men — two entirely naked
and one in his underwear — broke in early Sunday and left a trail of red peppers on the beach. Lou Bangert, general manager of Doc’s Beach House in Bonita Beach told the News-Press of Fort Myers that he’s

Alleged pickerel poachers caught in Manitoba C ANADIAN PRESS
WINNIPEG — Undercover conservation officers in Manitoba have netted four people in a sting operation that hooked more than 320 kilograms of fresh and frozen fillets from pickerel caught out of season. Manitoba Conservation says the seizure late last week at The Forks in downtown Winnipeg was one of their biggest in recent memory. The department alleges the fillets were to be delivered to a seafood market. Blair McTavish, a department spokesman, says some of the fillets were fresh, meaning the pickerel were caught outside the summer commercial fishing season now over on Lake Winnipeg. Three commercial fishers on the lake and the market’s owner are facing charges under the Fisheries Act, while the seized

WASHINGTON — A U.S. science advisory report says Japan’s Fukushima nuclear accident offers a key lesson to the nation’s nuclear industry: Focus more on the highly unlikely but worst case scenarios. That means thinking about earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, solar storms, multiple failures and situations that seem freakishly unusual, according to Thursday’s National Academy of Sciences report. Those kinds of things triggered the world’s three major nuclear accidents. “We need to do a soul searching when it comes to the assumptions” of how to deal with worst case events, said University of Southern California engineering professor Najmedin Meshkati, the panel’s
technical adviser. Engineers should “think about something that could happen once every, perhaps 1,000 years” but that’s not really part of their training or nature, he said. The report said the 2011 Japanese accident, caused by an earthquake and tsunami, should not have been a surprise. The report says another Japanese nuclear power plant also hit by the tsunami was closer to the quake’s fault. But the Onagawa plant wasn’t damaged because quakes and flooding were considered when it was built. The other two nuclear accidents — at Pennsylvania’s Three Mile Island and Ukraine’s Chornobyl— were caused by multiple system failures.
Fridge full of rotten food leads to evacuation ASSOCIATED PRESS
BERLIN — Emergency officials called to check out a suspected gas leak in Germany found a culprit they didn’t expect: a fridge full of rotting food. Police in the central city of Braunschweig said Thursday that the fire service evacuated an apartment block in the city Wednesday night after being alerted
to the smell of gas by a resident. They then searched for the source and traced it to a fridge in the apartment of the 35-year-old woman who had alerted authorities. It wasn’t plugged in and was full of rotting food. Residents were allowed back into their apartments after half an hour.
