Is your kid getting involved in gangs? Look for signs Parents’ guide has warning signs and prevention tips By Jeff Nagel Black Press
Parents are being urged to watch for telltale signs their teen is a dial-a-doper — the bottom rung of drug-dealing organized crime.
The indicators — access to a vehicle, carrying multiple cellphones, going out at all times of the day and night on quick errands — are spelled out in detail in a new booklet released by B.C.’s anti-gang police unit. The guide, titled “Understanding Youth and Gangs: A Parent Resource,” aims to help parents recognize and
ward off the start of gang involvement. It focuses on dial-a-dope drug deliveries because that’s the main entry point for many youth who enter gangs or organized crime activity, said Sgt. Lindsey Houghton of the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU-BC). The entry-level trade is not lucrative like gang
recruiters make it out to be, the guide says, arguing most could make more money working fast food restaurants but instead expose themselves to great risk. Dial-a-dopers are often under extreme pressure, the guide says, because they often rack up debts and will be held responsible by gangs for any product that’s stolen or
fronted without payment. The guide, developed in partnership with the Acting Together (ATCURA) Project and the South Asian Community Coalition Against Youth Violence, will be translated into languages other than English, including Punjabi, Chinese and Vietnamese. Police and community partners will distribute

A fawn got stuck. Oh, deer Last Friday around noon, a couple of neighbours on Port Moody’s North Shore had a close encounter with wildlife in their yards. A mother deer and its two offspring became spooked while in Bob Cunningham’s yard and one fawn tried to run through a gap in the fence between it and the property of neighbour Chris Clarke (left). Clarke and Cunningham spent about 15 minutes trying to free the fawn, which eventually got free, apparently uninjured, and went looking for its family.

Could pot farms soon be sprouting in Port Moody? It’s a possibility after city council approved a zoning bylaw amendment Tuesday to allow medicinal marijuana production and testing in PoMo’s industrial zones. The city’s general industrial zones (M3) cover areas such as the Suncor lands, Pacific Coast Terminals, Mill and Timber and the former Andrés Wines property. Light industrial (M1) areas are located along Murray and Clarke streets. Council opted not to allow medical pot growing in its rural A1 and A2 zones, which allow for
agricultural uses and include parts of Ioco and Belcarra Regional Park. Its decision comes after the federal government introduced changes to marijuana growing regulations, bringing in a licensing system so that medical marijuana can be produced on a commercial scale, according to a staff report. And while there was little discussion on the issue, Coun. Diana Dilworth said she supports the concept of medical marijuana but doesn’t want to see the leafy bud growing in Port Moody. There are 13 “big box” medical marijuana grow facilities across Canada, she added, six of which are in B.C. “Other municipalities have approved it on their sites and, quite frankly, I’m saying not in my backyard,” Dilworth said. Other councillors took
a more favourable approach, emphasizing the need for sick people to have access to legal, medicinal marijuana. The staff report notes Port Moody Police would be able to monitor marijuana grow facilities in the industrial zones, as opposed to the isolated rural zones, but “it is not clear exactly how the new [federal regulation] system will work on the ground and there is still some concern whether organized crime may continue to insert themselves into the process.” Coquitlam council passed a bylaw in July 2012 that limits medical marijuana production operations to M3 zones. Port Coquitlam does not currently provide for medical marijuana facilities but city staff there expect to bring forward a report on the matter later this year. spayne@tricitynews.com
PM delays pay parking trial Visitors to Rocky Point Park can save their coins for a scoop of ice cream now that Port Moody council has put plans for a pay parking trial period on the back burner. The decision is an abrupt change of direction just two weeks after council voted to a oneyear trial of pay parking at the popular PoMo park.The trial would have required that PoMo residents register up to two licence plates to qualify for free parking while visitors would pay $1 per hour for up to four hours. A council decision from last spring to engage the city in a public consultation on the issue didn’t materialize but Tri-City residents
made their feelings known regardless. “With the public outcry we’ve had, it’s almost like armageddon we started,”quipped Coun. Bob Elliott. During the public input session at Tuesday’s meeting, Rocky Point Kayak owner Jamie Cuthbert said the plan for pay parking didn’t mesh with efforts to increase tourism to the city, particularly by drawing visitors to the park. “The biggest oversight of this plan is penalizing and charging the tourists who are visiting our town,” Cuthbert said. “There has been public consultation for every other major decision in this city, most recently on
the monster homes, which affects a few residents. This parking plan affects over 100,000 visitors and most Port Moody residents, yet no consultation was done.” Yvette Cuthbert added the pay parking plan seemed ill-advised and expensive for temporary parking troubles over the summer, and would hurt her business and others in the park that pay a percentage of their sales to the city. Council agreed to have staff arrange for public consultation on pay parking at Rocky Point, and to report back for options on implementing the program next summer.

local killed on highway A man who died in a motor vehicle accident on the Coquihalla Highway last Saturday has been identified as Graham Pearce Overbury of Coquitlam. According to the BC Coroners Service, the 56-year-old was riding a motorcycle south at around 2:30 p.m. July 19 when he hit a stopped vehicle. Two cars had been involved in an incident at the south end of the snowshed/ tunnel, forcing several vehicles to stop abruptly. Investigators said Overbury was unable to stop in time and crashed into the stopped vehicles. Several other vehicles following the motorcyclist were also unable to avoid the wreckage and a total of 12 vehicles were involved.

There are at least nine Port Moody residents who may be taking the Bear Aware message more to heart now after receiving a violation ticket from BC Conservation officers this week. Officers were targeting problem areas throughout the TriCities on Tuesday and Wednesday evening after two startling bear incidents: a bear in Lions Park snacking on goodies left behind in an empty baby stroller; and an elderly woman in North Vancouver who went to close her open refrigerator door only to have her hand swatted away by a large black

The crew of the boat Bedlam II cruised into the Lahaina harbour early Wednesday — 20 days after leaving Victoria in the biennial Vic-Maui International Yacht Race. The sailors — Port Moody’s Alan Slater (skipper and boat owner), Gordon Penner, Gary McKinnon (watch captain) and Devin Jain, as well as Kevin Treharne of Coquitlam and John Johnstone of Vancouver — crossed the finish line and were greeted at around 3:30 a.m. with Hawaiian leis and tropical drinks. On the Vic-Maui website, the race committee reported one of the Bedlam crew members “said he was very happy to be anywhere, after seeming days of being nowhere.” It added: “They sailed for the last two days without the benefit of a main sail, battered by too many days of high winds, and kept a nervous eye on their rigging after a couple of failures — the last which injured one of the crew — and forced halyards into ser-

Shower fix in at Poirier By Janis Warren The Tri-CiTy News
“Eco-friendly” showers installed last month at the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex pool during its annual maintenance shutdown are fixed after early complaints. N ew p u s h - b u t t o n shower controllers were put in the change rooms in June but swimmers complained afterward about water temperature. Michelle Hunt, Coquitlam’s director of planning and business services for the parks department, said while the temperature level can be adjusted manually with a handle, the push-button valves and
low-flow shower heads posed some challenges when the pool re-opened this month. Yesterday, Hunt reported the flow and temperature issues had been addressed. Another concern raised by swimmers after the reopening was the hand-held shower heads, which Hunt said are not durable enough for public use and will soon be replaced. Next month, the city will shut down the City Centre Aquatic Complex for its annual cleaning. There are no equipment changes planned as CCAC already has push buttons for its showers but Hunt said low-flow shower heads are being

If life were that predictable, there might almost — almost, but not really — be an argument for bringing Fido along on a quick run to the shops on a warm July afternoon. If you knew for an undeniable fact that you would be away from your vehicle less than five minutes while you grabbed a bag of ice or maybe a six-pack to help take the edge off a sweltering summer’s day, then maybe — just maybe, but not really — it would make sense to let Max hang out in the car and wait. But as most of us have figured out, life rarely follows such a reliable schedule. While that sounds like common sense, apparently common sense isn’t enough, so cities such as Coquitlam have to institute large fines to keep people from putting their pets in danger. – adapted from The Langley Times (Black Press)

Notes from a (hot, dangerous) Okanagan vacation AS I SEE IT Chris Bryan Evening, Day 1: Arrive at campground to discover that no one tents anymore. Except us, that is. Squeeze tent onto pad between two houses on wheels. Morning, Day 2: These houses on wheels are powered by generators. So peaceful. Late morning, Day 3: Park ranger leads us on a short hike from the campground. Most of us are families with younger children. Another couple on the walk has a boy about five, the same age as our youngest. So far, they’ve been content to let him roam freely. I’m an anxious type, always in awe of laissez-faire parenting, so I watch in envy as they let the boy totter along a hillside, following the ranger in search of cactus. The slope soon steepens and the path narrows as it cuts across a steep grade, and I note a subtle rift for the Cool Couple. Mom has happily wandered ahead. Dad
follows the son, who teeters along the strip of dirt.“Single file, buddy!”he chirps, a note of panic betraying his mellow pose.“Stick to the path, big guy! Single file! Watch where you’re going! Single file!” A small victory.Yes, my five-year-old’s palm is clutched firmly in my hand. But at least it’s not sweating. Later morning, Day 3: Reach a lookout. It’s your standard viewpoint — trail ends at a wide open area and at one end the land just falls away. There are no fences or warning signs. My still occasionally random five-yearold’s hand is still clutched in mine. Meantime, toddle toddle toddle toddle… there goes someone’s two-year-old toward the edge. Ten feet. Five feet… closing… There’s a parent about to intervene here, right? “Far enough!”I blurt. The boy stops and eyes me. Now the mother and grandmother, previously oblivious, are on the case. Later, I ponder this. Can this type of parent smell people like me and know they can just zone out for a bit?

Morning, Day 5: Begin tearing down tent at our sun-bathed campsite, already past 30 C. Inside the tent, rolling up air mattresses, sleeping bags, packing children’s things, it’s got to be 40 C. Attempts to usefully engage children in helping out have been abandoned as unpacking their mis-packing in order to pack feels a bit silly. Oldest son is cool in the car, reading his comic book. “Let’s get a move on,”he mutters to me, and for the briefest of moments I feel apologetic. The heat has turned me perverse. Late morning, Day 5: Discover ant colony under tent. Thousands of them, dashing in all directions, carrying little white… Rice Krispies? Ahh... eggs. Morning, Day 6: At a hotel now. A shower has revived the parents. Now in breakfast room, eating cardboard pastries and shiny fruit. A father nearby is having a fit over his son’s eating habits. “You always do this! Why do you always do this? I’ve told you over and over to stop doing this!” The boy is about six. The father is beaking in
his ear. The boy is a sea of calm, not responding. Perhaps he turned off the volume months ago. Now, he’s just waiting for his dad to run out of gas. The boy looks over at me now, smiles in a way that says“what can you do?” and rolls his eyes. Afternoon, Day 7: Note to self: purchase car with air conditioning. Spend six hours on highway with temperature around 35 degrees. Get gas at Hope mega station jammed with miserable, hot, dirty fellow travellers. Dante’s modern Inferno would put the inner circle of hell here... Later Afternoon, Day 7: … or here, somewhere on Highway 1 near Langley, where the traffic stops for no apparent reason. Evening, Day 7: Arrive home to find the cool West Coast no longer so. Turn on backyard sprinkler and begin dismantling the car. Oldest son irritated that I’m not joining him in sprinkler, opting instead to unstuff our Toyota. Parents are so selfish.

Fireworks are bad for both pets and wildlife The Editor Last year at this time, I expressed my concerns about the city of Port Moody’s decision to discharge fireworks in Burrard Inlet — an area rich in wildlife like purple martins, osprey, herons, eagles and harbour seals, to name a few — directly to Mayor Mike Clay and council. I also consulted with several local animal groups. The BC SPCA supported my concerns, sending a letter to the mayor and council stating: “Exploding fireworks create serious issues for animals in our communities: • Dogs who are normally friendly can sometimes act out of character, placing members of the public, including children, at risk. The strange sights and sounds can cause a normally friendly dog to bite if it feels scared or threatened. • The ban or restricted access of fireworks greatly improves the lives of local wildlife. In recent years, mass bird deaths in North America have been directed attributed to evenings of fireworks. Both birds and

Those not killed from the effects of loud noises and flashing projectiles, can be highly disturbed and suffer from reductions in natural feeding and breeding behaviours, as well as the abandonment of young in nests or dens. • Harmful smoke and garbage waste from fireworks are secondary threats to the health of local wildlife.”
I am dismayed that this event is occurring once again. With a cost of approximately $30,000, does this shortterm spark of “entertainment” need to come on the expense of the thousands of animals that call Port Moody home? Take steps on climate crisis The Editor, A letter to MP James Moore: I want you to know that I am very concerned about the impact of climate crisis is having on our environment and our children’s future.The crisis is now evident in the rapidly decreasing polar ice caps and island folk losing their entire land, such as Kiribati, an island in the Pacific, where people are now climate refugees looking for new homes in Africa and in Europe. I urge you, as decision makers in Canada, to find
the courage and wisdom to press for, and put into action, the urgent measures needed to assure a safe, future climate for all. This action will include most importantly that we reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere from the current 400 to a safe 350 parts per million. A seesaw, a steep ramp and a log bridge are among the obstacles at Coquitlam’s new bike skills park. This month, the city opened two gravel circuits at Mariner Way and Chilko Drive: a 160-metre-long beginners’ track and a 240 m course for intermediates. Both link with the paved path that circles the outside of Mundy Park. Michelle Hunt, Coquitlam’s director of planning and business services, said the site has been a popular recreational destination since the fencing came down on July 8. And during a visit on Wednesday, tots on tricycles being pushed by their parents, pre-schoolers and caregivers out walking dogs, and teens looking for a challenge could be seen on the two routes, many of them happy to have somewhere new to play.

Designed by van der Zalm and Associates with consultation from city parks staff and local cycling groups, the bike skills park cost Coquitlam taxpayers $157,000. Part of the city’s OffRoad Cycling Strategy as well as the master trails plan, the Mariner
bike skills park follows the construction of the BMX grounds at Town Centre Park in City Centre. Next up are advanced bike trails set to be built next year in the Riverview forest, also on Mariner Way. Over the past decade, the east side of Mundy Park — along the BC
Hydro right-of-way — has changed dramatically with the addition of an animal shelter and an off-leash dog area. Currently, the city is undergoing a management plan for Mundy’s 400 acres, which were dedicated as an urban forest park in 1993.

Charge a ‘big relief’ to parents, say Mounties continued from front page
Yesterday, Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung said the lengthy investigation drew on members from the traffic and major crimes sections as well as other specialized units, with officers following up on every one of the more than 100 tips that flowed in from the public. News of the charge, which was approved Wednesday, was a “big relief” to Leung’s family who have asked for privacy, Chung said. Annie Leung, the only child of Maggie and Ricky Leung, was a student at PoCo’s Riverside secondary school when she died. Shortly after the accident, her parents made an emotional plea to the driver, and to anyone else who may have information, to come forward. “You are somebody’s father, son or husband,”

daughter until emergency crews arrived. Search warrants were executed on the suspect’s home and his vehicle, which was impounded, though Chung couldn’t say when that happened. Irwin Richard Franz has been charged with failing to stop at the scene of an accident causing bodily harm or death.
“This was a motor vehicle crash. This is a very serious charge,” said Chung, noting a conviction can carry a maximum sentence of life. Chung said Franz is not considered a flight risk and has not been remanded into custody. His first court appearance will be on Aug. 25.

More PoCo transfers and less direct service after Evergreen The draft Evergreen Line Bus Integration Plan will mean additional transfers for most PoCo transit users and will reduce the frequency of the 160 bus that currently connects downtown PoCo with Coquitlam Station — and beyond to downtownVancouver. Dave Currie, PoCo’s manager of transportation, said the proposal is worrying because increased bus service in the municipality, which will not have an Evergreen Line station, is a crucial part of the city’s efforts to reduce residents’ reliance on single-occupancy vehicle trips. “There are no new resources committed at this time,” Currie told The Tri-City News. “The redistribution of service hours is providing less service to Port Coquitlam. Obviously, that is a great concern to us and council.” Only downtown PoCo is expected to see an increase in bus service, with all outlying neighbourhoods experiencing a reduction in overall transit accessibility, Currie said.

Plans to identify new off-leash dog parks in Port Coquitlam are being deferred until the fall after council requested that city staff come back with more information on locations and costs. Staff will also examine enforcement options and consult with user groups before council considers the report. On Monday, a draft report went to PoCo’s finance and intergovernmental committee noting that the two existing off-leash parks have proven popular. Under the new plan, the closest stop will be on the 188 route, which runs along Coast Meridian Road. Service to high schools also needs to be improved, the mayor said, noting that there are no buses that go past Terry Fox secondary and only minimal service exists to Riverside secondary. The need for more buses servicing Burke Mountain are behind the changes, Moore said, but
“it seems as though they are trying to do that at the expense of current routes.” He envisions a PoCo transit system that uses Lougheed as the spine of
the network, with most buses and community shuttles feeding into the corridor. The city also wants TransLink to improve all bus routes in PoCo to “frequent transit network” status, meaning buses come every 15 minutes. “As a bus user, that would be phenomenal,” Moore said. “When you don’t have to memorize bus schedules, it makes it really convenient to take the bus. That is what we need to get to.” Still, with a transit funding referendum on the horizon, planning documents such as the Evergreen Line Bus Integration Plan could see dramatic changes before they are implemented, Moore said.

Port Moody Public Library plans to rejig its existing space to meet immediate needs while also putting together plans to expand in the future. “Space is an issue for the library today and we anticipate it will be even more of an issue as time goes on,” Linda Martin, chair of the PoMo library board, said as she presented the results of a space needs analysis at a city committee of the whole meeting Tuesday. Following the results of the library’s community needs assessment, the board and city staff have been working with Kasian Architecture on the space needs analysis for both short-term needs over the next year as well as mid-term needs in five to seven years. Martin said the short-term plans are to reconfigure the library’s space within the existing footprint. “We feel there are things we can do within the existing space that we have that will alleviate some of the critical need for re-organization,” she said, adding the board has asked Kasian for several options for expansion in the future. The board expects to update council on those plans in the fall, along with a capital budget request to renovate in 2015. The budget request for expansion will likely come sometime between 2016 and 2018.

Hemi is the right choice. Power was always there to pass and pull up a hill and the fuel economy can be good if the driver watches their speed. The V8 has the ability to switch off four of the eight cylinders when the truck is under light load and accessing this as often as possible makes a big difference. Another thing to consider is price: the Durango is not inexpensive, starting at $39,995 for the V6 and running up to $52,495 for the top Citadel V8. My family loved spending time in the Durango, we all had a lot of space and the trip was effortless. Our next adventure is to Portland, Oregon in the Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel. Touring Subaru Outback around The Rock St. John’s, N.L.: Atop Signal Hill is an arrow that points westward. It reads “Vancouver, 5,031 km/3,126 mi.” I’m a long way from home. But as I look over the rock wall of the historical landmark in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, I don’t feel so far away. An iceberg presents itself in the distance as the warm, morning sun lights up the Atlantic Ocean. The faint hum of a vessel’s engine drones away in the background. To think, on December 12, 1901, the first transatlantic wireless signal was received by Guglielmo Marconi at that spot is a fascinating piece of history. Interestingly, my phone whistles telling me I’ve received a message. As I walk towards the allnew 2015 Subaru Outback, I realize that this vehicle is also making its own little history. Touted as the world’s first sport utility wagon, it’s now 20 years old and better than ever. There’s an all-new exterior look, the interior is much more refined, there’s a vibrant gauge cluster, a new audio system, and around back, there’s a total of 1005L of cargo capacity (that’s up 33L from the 2014 model.) The latter of the two engines is what powered me around Newfoundland. With only a couple of days to figure out some adventures on The Rock, time would be tight, but I’d enjoy each minute of it. Complete with a hightorque Lineartronic CVT, I had the option to up and downshift through the Outback’s simulated gears, in case I needed to pass cars en route to my various adventures. First: sea kayaking in Cape Broyle. Though the drive from downtown St. John’s is only about 66 kilometres, I’ve learned that giving yourself a little extra time when going anywhere is a good idea. Let’s just say the city wasn’t built on a grid so it’s not always a straight shot getting out. And even though you’re on roadways, they’re not highways. Furthermore, not everyone was on such a tight time budget as I was! That said, when I was happily soaking in the surroundings, I did so in peace and quiet. out at trip to Cape Spear; Canada’s easternmost point. Looking out into the Atlantic, another iceberg lazily floats by as the humpback whales are out and breathing. Los Angeles – The Nissan 370Z oozes youthful energy with its edgy design and wholehearted performance. My two days in Los Angeles were spent mainly in and around Pasadena, a short freeway drive (16 km) northeast of the downtown core. There are no beaches, no piers, no theme parks, no giant roller coasters and no kids ... OK, just a few little darlings. It does have beautifully preserved historic buildings, magnificent gardens, art galleries, museums and a vibrant “old town” district with theatres, bars and many great restaurants. Rodriguez from Surrey, who works at Nissan’s U.S. design centre in California. That magic moment of divine inspiration for the Z’s fluid styling lines apparently came while he was watching “shark week” on the Discovery Channel. He also has cleverly incorporated some subtle styling references to the original 240Z, a classic sports car. The Z’s one-touch, auto-latching convertible top can open or close in about 20 seconds and comes with a glass rear window and an integrated electric rear window defroster. It also comes with a fabric inner liner and a hinged metal body-colour tonneau cover that gives a top-down 370Z a classy finished look. This Z has a lighter and more rigid body structure than its predecessor and a
more powerful 332-horsepower 3.7-litre DOHC V6 engine. There’s a lovely “growl” from its dual exhaust pipes when you prod the gas pedal, and drive goes to the rear wheels via a viscous-type limited slip differential. A noteworthy high-tech engine enhancement is its Variable Valve Event and Lift Control (VVEL) system, which adds extra power, yet improves fuel efficiency and provides cleaner exhaust emissions. Wandering on less travelled roads towards the towering San Gabriel Mountains, which create a picturesque backdrop to Pasadena, was an opportunity to play with the Z’s delightful rev-matching 7-speed automatic transmission. continued on page A23

An exceptionally good power-to-weight ratio allows an under-six second 0 to 100 km/hour acceleration time and puts this Z into elite sports car territory. Yet, when you consider its comparatively good fuel economy numbers and sane pricing, it’s still one of the smarter “expensive plaything” purchases. In Canada, the Roadster is offered in a Touring trim with both 6-speed manual and 7-speed automatic transmissions. Touring automatic comes with both Sport and Navigation packages in Canada, but these packages are optional in the US. There’s also a basic (non-Touring) edition of the 370Z Roadster that sells for $41,470, south of the border. Not too long ago, high-performance cars guzzled fuel, belched smog and were a workout to drive. A 6-speed manual transmission can also be fitted (via a sport package) and it comes with a downshift rev-matching feature, a “world first” for Nissan engineering. It’s a snug driver cockpit that offers limited storage (although there is some extra space behind the seats), a single cup-holder centre console and a pull-up style park brake. I used all the rear travel provided on the driver’s seat and had the seat cushion set to its lowest position – a 6-foot-plus tall driver is likely to have issues. Getting in or out of the lowslung Z wasn’t as painful an exercise as I feared it might be, but if you suffer from back or joint ailments a taller vehicle would definitely be a better choice. The hip point for the driver’s seat is very low and you sit with legs extended forward, viewing the road ahead over what suddenly seems like a much longer hood. Save money with natural gas water heating By Kerry Vital
A warm shower or a relaxing hot bath is one of life’s simple little pleasures. Most of us don’t think about what it takes to heat that water until a rush of cold hits you. But it should be one of the top things on your list when looking to purchase or renovate a home. According to Natural Resources Canada, heating water takes up more than 25 per cent
of your home’s total energy use. So installing the most efficient water heater possible is well worth the initial outlay. “Look beyond the granite and the stainlesssteel appliances,” advises Joan Churchill at FortisBC. Churchill is the woman behind the popular Renos with Joan series, and now the Shopping with Joan series that appears in The Conserver, a free enewsletter filled with easy energy-saving tips that you can sign up for at
fortisbc.com/conserver. In 2010, Churchill purchased a pre-war bungalow and started renovating it into her energy-efficient dream home. Four years later the major renovation is complete. It began by upgrading the inefficient furnace to a high-efficiency, natural gas ENERGY STAR® model. “I wanted a natural gas water heater because heating with natural gas is more affordable,” Churchill says. It’s easy to save on water heating. Wash your clothes in cold water (except for your dirtiest whites), and take shorter showers. Try running your dishwasher only when it’s full, and make sure you fix your leaky pipes. It’s surprising how much water you waste when you leave a faucet dripping. Another way to save energy is to install a programmable thermostat, which will help you save up to 15 per cent on your home heating bills. Or, just wear more layers! Adding a sweater to your outfit will keep you cozy and save you money. Ensuring your home is well-insulated is one of the smartest things you can do. Not only will it keep you cooler in the summer by keeping hot air out, it will also keep your warm air from escaping when the temperatures drop. When it’s chilly outside, keep your doors and windows shut to prevent the heat from escaping your house, and caulk the interior side of your windows where the sash meets the frame to keep those cold winds out. You can also add weatherstripping to your exterior doors and the windows that open. Ensuring you change the filter on your furnace every three to six months will protect your furnace, as well as prevent the fan motor from overheating. This will keep a bit more money in your wallet! It is incredibly important to hire a professionally trained and licensed contractor when you are looking to install natural gas, whether it’s for a renovation or a new home. These contractors are well-informed about energy efficiency incentives and innovative technologies. They will provide you a written quote with an outline of costs and work involved. So far she’s discussed low-flow sink faucets and saving water with low-flow showerheads. “I want to give people the information they may need in one place,” she explains. “Little things like switching to a low-flow showerhead can add up to savings on your energy bills.” If your home doesn’t have natural gas, start by calling FortisBC and inquiring as to the location of the nearest gas main. The Coquitlam Reds were not able to gain any ground in the Premier Baseball League standings in the club’s last games of the season after splitting a doubleheader with the White Rock Tritons on the weekend. Coquitlam dropped the first game 5-3 but managed to squeak out a 5-4 win in the final inning of the second match at Mundy Park later in the afternoon. Reds pitcher Cameron Williams got the start on the mound in the opener, holding the visiting White Rock club to four runs after six innings. However, Coquitlam struggled offensively, managing just one run in the first when Jake McDonald rounded the bases and two more in the third when McDonald hit a triple batting in Zac Comeault and Evan Soutar. The Reds struggled in the early innings of the second match, allowing White Rock to post a 3-0 lead after the first. But Coquitlam continued to chip away at the lead. In the second innings Cameron Williams, who got on base with a single to to shortstop, made it to home plate when teammate Drew Horton crushed the ball to centre field. The Reds tied the game in the second with runs from Austen Butler and Williams but White Rock responded with a run of their own in the fourth inning when Juan Paez stole home off an error by the Coquitlam catcher. Matthew Woo notched a run in the fourth to tie

Regional all-stars the Fraser Valley Chiefs — including local athletes Andrew Walton, Ben McCarthy, Javeed Khankashi, Derek Fong, Keegan Baldwin, Sean Perry, Robert Henry and Kyle Habkirk — represented B.C. at the Canadian nationals in Thunder Bay last weekend, losing to Quebec 11-10 in extra innings in the finals.
