After years of effort, ferry remains
Provincial government wants its cut from scrapping of former Queen of Sidney Tyler OLSEN ABBOTSFORD NEWS
Moored just off the Mission shoreline, the ferry once known as the Queen of Sidney strikes an apocalyptic pose. Gnawed by rust, muddied by grime, the boat has haunted the Fraser River for years. But while the District of Mission has long tried to get rid of the ferry, it continues to deteriorate, in part because of the province’s insistence on taking a cut of the sale of the 102-metre-long boat. The ferry is just one of several vessels in varying states of repair at the site off Cooper Road. Some have long lost any buoyancy. While the wreckage – which is owned by Bob and Gerald Tapp – draws sightseers and moviemakers, it has frustrated District of Mission officials, who are powerless because they lack jurisdiction over the river. The adjacent farmland, also owned by the Tapps, is an “environmental nightmare,” Agriculture Land Commission’s (ALC) Ron MacLeod says. But Gerald Tapp, who cites the Magna Carta and bears grudges against a range of politicians and officials, is just as negative about his dealings with various governments. “I want them to get off my back,” Tapp says. “There’s so much going on behind the scenes that you don’t know.” In 2012, with the river spilling its banks, the provincial government declared an environmental emergency amid

The boats were secured at significant cost by driving pilings deep into the riverbed. Two years later, despite joint efforts to dismantle and scrap the vessels by the ALC, the Tapps, and an unnamed financial group, the boats continue to deteriorate. The ministry of environment says the ALC made contact in January to ensure all requirements for the disposal of the vessels were being met. Instead, the ministry says

Gerald Tapp the salvaging of the ferry was halted because the government is trying to recover money owed by the Tapps. “Liens placed on the Queen of Sidney by the province, as a result of unpaid cost recovery, prevented initial dismantling,” a ministry spokesperson wrote in an email. Mission Mayor Ted Adlem
had heard of plans to try and dispose of what he calls “that old stinking ferry.” Told that liens imposed by the ministry of environment might have scuttled plans to rid Mission of the ferry, Adlem says: “That seems kind of haywire.” He suggested the ministry should partner directly with

the salvage company. But to avoid a lengthy legal case, that would likely require co-operation from the Tapps. And there lies the crux of the issue. •••• After 40 years of service, the Queen of Sidney was retired in November of 2000. The Tapps bought it two years later for $100,000, moved it up the Fraser River to its current resting place, and renamed it the Bad Adventure. ney and the shore, another former ferry, the San Mateo, sits partially submerged at an uncomfortable angle. Gerald Tapp, 77, doesn’t seem to have any particular emotional investment in his Bad Adventure. Over the years, he says thieves have stolen tens of thousands of dollars worth of material from the Cooper Road site and the adjacent boats. But Tapp is deeply suspicious of any action by governments, be they federal, provincial or municipal. Tapp has had his share of court battles and has been sued by the Township of Langley at least twice. In 2002, he was ordered to pay $100,000 for cleaning up an unsightly property near the Fort Langley Airport. A township lawyer says that money has yet to be paid. Calling various governments “totally crooked,” Tapp is still suspicious about the decision to secure his boats two years ago. He says he received a $205,000 bill for the 2012 work. He has yet to pay it. Tapp speaks with similar doubt about the company that offered $250,000 to salvage the vessel earlier this year. Mission dancer returns home Carol Aun

As a child growing up in Mission, Gina Janus never imagined she could dance around the world. Now after travelling through Canada, New Zealand, and Fiji, the art is bringing her back to where it all started. The Mission Folk Music Festival (MFMF) was always a “magical event” to Janus when she was a teenager, and she has great memories of it, but this year, the memories of the festival will be like none other. “I imagined and dreamed of performing on those stages, as a teen, but this is my first opportunity and I am so excited,” said Janus, who will be performing in this year’s festival with Fiji’s VOU. Janus started her dance career at the age
of 10, which is considered late, and excelled quickly. “It was by luck that a lady from Scotland moved to the street I grew up on and built a dance school known as the Fraser Valley Dance Academy,” said Janus. “So, I guess you could say that I didn’t find dance, but rather it found me, and 25 years later it is now my livelihood.” After finishing high school, Janus continued to train at Alberta’s Grant MacEwan University dance program and continued her studies at the University of Calgary. She moved to the South Pacific after meeting a New Zealander and lived in Auckland for seven years. Janus worked at six different schools and eventually started her own company, Fuze
Danze, where she met a dancer who introduced her to VOU’s founder and director, Sachiko Soro. “Sachiko asked me to come to Fiji to teach a two-week workshop improving the technical standards of the dancers through contemporary and jazz, but also to choreograph new works,” said Janus, adding the trip changed her life. “The dancers just didn’t learn from me, I gained an incredible amount of knowledge from them as well.” Janus developed a strong bond with the group and just as she was contemplating a move back to Canada, she was offered a position with VOU. “As a choreographer and dance instructor, they are amazing to use as my canvas,” said Janus. “They are
all like sponges and just absorb everything and anything I throw at them.” The former Mission resident was brought to tears the first time she watched the group perform. “They are filled with what they call energy, spirit, and mana,” explained Janus. “They have made me look at dance in a totally different perspective and have enriched me with new knowledge that has changed my approach on choreographing and teaching.” Dance is not about the beautiful pointed toe or legs kicking up to your ears, it comes from your experiences and your soul, said Janus. But VOU is not just a dance company, it is also a family. “Even when the dancers are not work-
ing, they still remain at the studio roaring with laughter and chatter. It is their haven and sanctuary.” It has been three years since Janus has been back to her hometown. She is excited to share Mission with her extended family. “Returning to Mission for me so far has made my heart full.” VOU will be performing on the MFMF main stage on Saturday beginning at 6 p.m. The group will also be performing at the Totem Shelter Stage on Saturday at 3 p.m., and on Sunday at 12:45 p.m. The 27th annual Mission Folk Music Festival takes place July 25 to 27 at Fraser River Heritage Park. whom he describes as “fickle.” The Tapps’ land between the Fraser and the dike is in the Agriculture Land Reserve but cluttered with vehicles in various states of repair. The ALC’s interest lies in cleaning up that mess and returning the land to a farmable state. But doing so won’t be easy, MacLeod says. “The land will have to be rehabilitated.” MacLeod would like any company that scraps the boats to repair the land at the end of their work. But gaining co-operation with the Tapps is difficult, he says. Three companies have expressed interest
In late May, a barge belonging to a scrap metal recycling business caught fire near Silverdale. After several days under the watch of the Canadian Coast Guard, the blaze burned itself out. Fisheries and Oceans Canada spokesperson Carrie Mishima says the vessel’s owner “has plans underway to deconstruct the vessel.” There are other derelict boats in the area and given the ferry’s profile, one might expect the federal government, which has jurisdiction over river transportation, to become involved. In 2012, Transport Canada produced a 25-page report on “the extent of

ex-Queen of Sidney. It was slow work with no end in sight, in keeping with the years-long effort to rid the Fraser of boat graveyard. “At some point, the Queen of Sidney will be dismantled,” Abbotsford-Mission MLA Simon Gibson says. MacLeod also sounds vaguely optimistic.
“We’ve made some progress, but we’re going to have to step up our efforts,” he says. But local fishing guide Radek Hanus just wants to see the boats gone. Hanus says many clients want to get a close look at the old ferry. “People like looking at it from a distance,” he says. But the closer you
get, the uglier the scene becomes as half-sunk, rotting boats creep into view. “Cleaning it up would provide a better image for the area and the river itself,” Hanus says. “People say British Columbia is beautiful and natural. There’s not a heck of a lot natural about those vessels.”

At the conclusion of BC Day on Monday, August 4, this C in B season will have contained activity in five of six programs. Next year we will add the national competition, with external judges visiting and evaluating the entire community’s efforts. For several years we have received five blooms, but as earlier evaluations have suggested, our challenge is to raise our marks by Mission’s providing the judges with what they have called a “wow!” factor. Could this be a revitalized downtown area? Without a doubt, this season has been a positive one, and it continues to be a privilege for me to associate with such enthusiastic people. I am prepared to debate this statement, but Communities in Bloom activities, including gardening, tidying, etc., bring out the best from participants and produce the best volunteer results. While I assisted at the Awards Night crowd last week, I could even feel the pride and enthusiasm. When I shook the hands of winners, often the most
senior recipients had the strongest and most vigorous handshakes. After her handshake, one senior lady made sure the audience knew that her husband even grew tomatoes and cucumbers! Communities in Bloom has something for all ages, and visitors to Spirit Square at the Mission Harbour will see for themselves and experience the theme: Our River-Our Heritage. Speed increases criticized by some
It’s getting quicker to get around parts of British Columbia. Earlier this month, the provincial government announced new, higher speed limits on 35 sections of rural highways, with more promised for later in the summer. In total, drivers will be able to put their gas foot down a little harder on 1,300 km of blacktop. The Ministry of Transportation says serious crashes on provincial highways have decreased 28 per cent since 2003. Cars are safer, drivers have more and better technology and education at their disposal. Enforcement is better. While lead-footed drivers and owners of fast cars may celebrate the decision, not everyone is happy. The police officers who patrol many of those highways and attend to the carnage that sometimes results from excessive speeding don’t like the new limits. ICBC is worried about safety and vows to monitor those stretches of highway that have new limits to see
if there’s an effect on crash rates and severity. Truckers aren’t pleased with the new rules, either. The BC Trucking Association says it will direct drivers to stick to its current speed policies because the faster a fully loaded truck travels, the longer it takes to stop, a move that some local trucking companies are following. It just isn’t worth the extra risk to increase the speed of a loaded truck, say some company representatives, not to mention, the faster a truck moves, the more fuel it consumes – and that money comes out of the pockets of truckers and, ultimately, consumers. To alleviate safety concerns, the province has said it will adjust speed limits to weather conditions on some of those stretches of highway. Too many drivers already treat speed limits as a suggestion, rather than law. Now, their threshold has just been raised. – Black Press

B.C. Views When the audited public accounts confirmed a $353 million surplus for the last fiscal year, B.C. Liberal political staff were quick to remind reporters of the NDP’s main theme from last year’s election campaign. Pages of election quotes from almost every NDP MLA were waiting to be distributed. It was a “bogus budget,” one of the more polite tags applied to the government’s pre-election fiscal plan. “It underestimates the costs in a whole bunch of ministries and we’re going to have to review that because all of the decisions that we propose in our platform will have to be implemented,” said then-leader Adrian Dix, describing the NDP’s plans to tax and spend more. Skeena MLA Robin Austin targeted health care in the budget debate: “Bearing in mind that our population is actually increasing,
bearing in mind that our population is aging, I think it’s very unrealistic to think we can actually limit health care expenditures to 2.7 per cent.” As it turned out, health care spending grew by just over two per cent. It still went up by $360 million from the previous year, but after annual increases of six or seven per cent had become the norm, this is quite an achievement. New agreements remain to be negotiated with doctors and nurses, so we’re unlikely to see the same cost control results for the current year. Ottawa’s health care transfer payment formula has changed, and increases are to be capped at three per cent a year by 2016, so this is the kind of spending restraint all provinces are expected to produce. Education was the only other ministry to receive significant extra funding last year, up $299 million despite continuing enrolment decline. Like health, the education budget goes up every year, and these increases, along with strong student performance results, expose the rhetoric of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation about a cash-starved system for what it is. But the biggest fabrication of last year’s
election was the “debt free B.C.” slogan emblazoned on the side of Premier Christy Clark’s campaign bus. The public accounts confirm that the prov-

The much-touted balanced budget is on the operating side, while the province continues to pile up debt to pay for the Port Mann mega-project, hospitals, schools and other big infrastructure. Finance Minister Mike de Jong emphasized the difference between capital and operating expenditures. “We’re borrowing to build as opposed to paying for the groceries,” he said.
“Debt free B.C.” was not an outright misrepresentation, merely one of the most farfetched promises ever delivered in the history of B.C. politics. The legislature is to convene in October so the B.C. Liberals can pass a taxation framework for the nascent liquefied natural gas industry, which the government hopes will generate the revenues to ultimately pay off the province’s $60-billion mortgage. Meanwhile there is more capital debt ahead. The cabinet is expected to green-light the Site C dam on the Peace River this fall, a decade-long project estimated to cost $8 billion. Along with the public accounts, the finance ministry released a list of surplus land sales. The sale of 50-odd properties, some of them closed schools, netted the provincial treasury about $310 million, which accounts for most of the surplus. Was this “selling off the family silverware to try and balance the books,” as now-NDP leader John Horgan termed it before the election? It’s certainly not a revenue source to be matched next year. Opinions should have been shared earlier offended the Downtown Business Association who rightly called him out for this insulting case of political opportunism. Hawes is, of course, entitled to his views. Had he chosen to share his wisdom during the consultation process, this would have been quite welcome and might have contributed to a better plan. A major part of Hawes’ objections
involve the traffic flow changes on Lougheed Highway and North Railway Avenue. This, unfortunately, is a problem without a good solution. As an election promise made by the Citizens for Responsible Municipal Government (CRMG) in the November 2011 Mission Messenger, “Truck traffic through downtown is a major problem causing noise and a

create a blueprint for action that will better protect all Lower Mainland communities from Fraser River and coastal flooding. Until now, each municipality or diking district has worked in isolation, competing for limited flood funding from senior governments. Although the District of Mission and a number of other communities have identified local priorities, some communities
have not. Regional priorities are critical when it comes to managing the risks and committing to major infrastructure. No community can stand alone in the face of a major flood. Mission’s largest street party is set to take place on July 26. The fourth annual Mission Fest is a way for downtown business owners to say thank you to their customers, said organizer Rhett Nicholson. “We’re a part of the community and this is how we give back.” Three blocks of First Avenue from Horne Street to Grand Street will be closed to vehicle traffic for the event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be eight bouncy castles, including Alcatraz, a 40-foot-long structure that even adults can jump in. “I’m going to go on it five times,” said Nicholson light-heartedly, while emphasizing there is no charge to attend the event or participate in any of the activities. RCMP say no link between two recent fires Carol Aun MISSION RECORD
Mission Mounties are investigating two fires that happened this past week on the same street. An intentionally set blaze in the 32900 block of Egglestone Avenue last Thursday night appears to have been started by a young child, according to police. Mission firefighters responded to a house fire around 10:15 p.m. on July 17. “When our guys got on scene, they went to put out the hot spots,� said assistant fire chief Rob Collins. “The majority of the fire was already knocked down by a neighbour with a garden hose.� One person was sleeping inside the house at the time, but managed to get out safely. No injuries were reported. Investigators estimate the house sustained about $40,000 worth of damage. Police say the fire was started at the side of the house and they believe a nineyear-old boy who lived in the neighbourhood is to blame. “It appears some child’s toys were set on fire near the house, which caused the siding to catch fire,� said Sgt. Shaun Wright, who noted the Ministry of Child and Family Development (MCFD) was called to follow up with the child and his guardian. It is standard pro-
tocol for police to get in touch with MCFD when young children are involved in criminal activity. “Under 12 years of age, they are the responsibility of MCFD and not subject to criminal prosecution under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act and Criminal Code,� Wright explained. The second blaze happened shortly before 5 a.m. Monday morning when a 2005 GMC Jimmy was lit on fire. A small plastic gasoline can was on the ground near the vehicle, but there is no known motive for this incident, said Wright, who noted the two fires do not appear to be linked to each other or to any of the other suspicious fires that happened earlier this year. Police continue to investigate several arsons that took place in April, including a mobile home fire that claimed the life of 86-year-old Bill Murphy. A c c o rd i n g to Wright, there have not been any significant developments. “They are still an open investigation, but do not appear linked to any other fires which have occurred since.� Wright is also encouraging Mission residents to take note of any suspicious activity in their neighbourhood and report it to police.

New business cleans up wood waste Carol Aun MISSION RECORD
A new wood pellet manufacturing facility wants to make use of wood waste and cleaning up the air.
There are many mills in the Fraser Valley with residual woods that have low value to the producer, explained Paul Adams, operations manager for SMG Wood Pellet
Inc., a subsidiary of SMG Asset Canada, that will be owners of the new facility, if approved. The leftover material is usually stored in large piles which sometimes
self combust, creating air quality problems, or it is brought to the landfill to decompose while releasing methane and carbon dioxide into the environment.
The wood bits can also be shipped to pulp and paper or cement operations, but don’t provide value to the producer, said Adams. SMG plans to create
pellets with the wood waste for the European and Asian markets where they will be used in place of coal to heat residential and commercial buildings. Similar plants have traditionally been criticized for poor practices leading to air quality issues, but Adams said his company’s operations will be industry leaders and will be using state of the art equipment to not impede air quality. “Everything will be under cover,” he explained, adding a dust-proof conveyor system will not release any particulate from the process. After the material chipped, it will be dried using high efficiency, low emission driers, and pressed into pellets. “It’s a very clean process,” said Adams, noting the pellets are compact and ideal for shipping. “We want to create a showcase facility for wood manufacturing in B.C. It will be the first of many plants globally.”
The operation is proposed to run seven days a week, 24 hours a day. SMG’s facility will be located on industrial land on Broadway Avenue and will complement some other wood residual businesses that are already operating in Mission, according to a district of Mission staff report by Mike Younie, director of development services. Coun. Jenny Stevens said she initially had concerns, but everything she has read so far supports the business. “All reports indicate it would be beneficial for the environment,” said Stevens. Mission Mayor Ted Adlem also threw his support behind the project and was impressed with the company’s commitment to work with the district. “They’re bringing high paying jobs to Mission,” said Adlem. “And they’re trying to be good corporate citizens.” For more information about the proposed facility, visit missionpellet.ca.

Mission’s Search and Rescue (MSAR) team helped rescue a wakeboarder on Stave Lake Monday. The woman, who appeared to be in her 20s, was injured while wakeboarding on the lake near Cypress Point, about 35 minutes from the boat launch area. “She was badly injured with a suspected broken leg and had to be stretchered out,” said John Lemond, president of MSAR. The team was called out to assist paramedics who could not access that area of the lake.
“We transported the paramedics in our jet boat from the Stave Lake boat launch,” Lemond explained. The first responders stabilized the woman and transported her to hospital. MSAR is a non-profit organization made up of volunteers who assist police, BC Ambulance Service and BC Coroners Service with search and rescue tasks. The group is looking for more volunteers and will be holding an information session in September for anyone interested. Liquor sales coming to farmers’ market Carol Aun MISSION RECORD
You could soon buy your fruits, veggies, bread and liquor at the Mission City Farmers’ Market. Changes to liquor sales that came into effect this month, as outlined by the province, included allowing licensed wineries, distilleries, and
breweries at farmers’ markets. “We do have plans to introduce it,” said MCFM manager Donna Gibson. “We’re very excited about it.” Vendors will be allowed to distribute samples, but cannot sell wine or beer by the glass. “(Customers) will have to take the product home or off site
to drink,” said Gibson, noting local market organizers have already been reaching out to local crafters. Mission council unanimously supported organizers’ request to pursue the addition to the market. Roger Dowker, chair of the MCFM board of directors, said the board is developing

This was the second rally held in as many weeks in Mission. “I’m disheartened and frustrated by the lack of progress at the bargaining table,” said Mission teacher Scott Susin last week, who organized the Monday afternoon event. “This isn’t a strike; it’s not a picket line,” Susin explained. “We’re keeping this in the public eye during the summer because a lot of times (teachers) are seen as being on vacation now. “We’re still fighting for better public education.” Last week the B.C. government said it would not impose
a settlement to keep the beginning of the school year from being disrupted in September. Finance Minister Mike De Jong said the lesson of imposing settlements is that they haven’t worked. The BCTF strike for the last two weeks of June saved the provincial treasury about $12 million a day, while year-end studies and exams were disrupted. The two sides haven’t communicated since early July, when B.C. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Kelleher said they are too far apart for mediation to be effective.

Sockeye mega-run so far slow to show up Jeff Nagel BLACK PRESS
A predicted massive run of Fraser River sockeye has yet to show up in force, so no commercial salmon fishing has yet been approved. Fishery managers with the Pacific Salmon Commission said Friday fewer sockeye are coming in so far than expected, although that could change swiftly. The commission’s Fra-
ser River panel has not yet issued an estimate of the run size and said planned openings for seine boat fisheries have been pushed back to at least July 23. The pre-season forecast – based on the fact this year’s return is the spawn of the unusually large 2010 run – projected 23 million sockeye would likely come back to the Fraser this summer, and it might run as high as 72 million.
Other challenges are ahead for the migrating fish if they prove to be merely late, not missing. Hot weather and a smaller-than-average Interior snowpack is likely to result in more sockeye dying than usual on their journey upriver. As of Thursday, the temperature of the Fraser was 18.8 degrees – 2.8 degrees higher than average for this date. “Sustained exposure
of sockeye to Fraser River water temperatures in this range may slow their migration and cause elevated levels of pre-spawn mortality,” the PSC’s announcement cautioned. River temperatures are forecast to moderate to 17.9 degrees over the next few days. The amount of water flowing past the gauge at Hope was also 20 per cent lower than usual Thursday.

Richards Avenue between Dewdney Trunk Road and Doyle Street Commencing July 7, 2014 Please be advised that commencing Monday July 7, 2014 the Public Works Roads Crew will be replacing drainage culverts located on Richards Avenue between Dewdney Trunk Road and Barr Street in preparation of a full road reconstruction being undertaken this summer. Intermittent day long road closures should be anticipated as this work progresses. A detour route will be posted to lead traffic around the work areas for the duration of the project. Following completion of the culvert works, the existing asphalt surface will be pulverized, the gravel reshaped and compacted and finally a new asphalt surface will be applied. We expect that all work, including restoration will be completed by August 31st, 2014.

It is perhaps a cliché and a bit trite to remark on how easy it is to love those people who are truly lovable and how hard it can be to love difficult people. For berries (raspberries, blueberries, blackberries), just wash and quickly pat dry with a clean kitchen towel, and freeze them in a single layer on a tray or cookie sheet. Super foods packed with flavour Men and women must alter their diets as they age. Portion sizes that young adults might have been able to get away must shrink when those same men and women enter their 30s. And as thirty-somethings head into their 40s, what’s on the plate requires more careful consideration than it might have a decade ago. The same goes for men and women over 50, who must take steps to reduce their risk for heart disease, stroke and diabetes. One of the easiest ways to do just that is to eat healthy foods. The following are five flavourful and healthy foods tailor-made for the over 50 crowd. 1. APPLES: Apples definitely qualify as a superfood, helping reduce cholesterol by preventing plaque buildup in the blood vessels and, as a result, cutting an individual’s
risk of diabetes considerably. In fact, a recent study published in the British Medical Journal found that eating at least two servings of apples per week can reduce a person’s risk of type 2 diabetes by as much as 23 per cent. Apples also make for a great source of fiber, potassium and vitamin C. 2. BLUEBERRIES: Blueberries help men and women maintain healthy blood sugar levels because they are high in soluble fiber, which lowers cholesterol while slowing the body’s uptake of glucose. And despite their relatively small size, blueberries contain more fiber, vitamins and minerals per ounce than any other fruit. 3. BROCCOLI: Though broccoli might not have been your best friend during childhood, you may want to cozy up to this powerful green vegetable now that you have
cracked the half-century mark. Broccoli is loaded with vitamin C. A single 3.5 ounce serving of broccoli contains more than 150 per cent of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C, which can shorten the duration of the common cold. In addition, a 2013 British study published in Medical News Today found that broccoli may help prevent osteoarthritis, a degeneration of joint cartilage and the underlying bone that is most common from middle age onward. A similar study from researchers at New York’s Roswell Park Cancer Institute published in the same publication six years earlier found that just three servings of broccoli per month can decrease bladder cancer risk by as much as 40 per cent. 4. FAVA BEANS: Fava beans are cholesterol-free and low in fat. Fava beans also may
provide cardiovascular benefits and help men and women maintain healthy weights. Fava beans are considered “nutrient-dense,� a term used to describe lowcalorie foods that boast lots of nutrients, and are an excellent source of vitamin B1, which is important for nervous system function and energy metabolism. 5. OATMEAL: Another food that might never make youngsters’ lists of their favourite foods, oatmeal is nonetheless a healthy option at
the breakfast table. Oatmeal is loaded with soluble fiber, which can reduce cholesterol levels and subsequently reduce a person’s risk of heart disease. Also low in calories, oatmeal can help men and women maintain a healthy weight. Those who find oatmeal a tad too bland for their tastes can double on their superfoods by adding some blueberries into the mix, making their breakfast more flavourful and more healthy.

Safety & Fun in the Sun
Most people love to get out on sunny, warm days for fun and to soak up the sun. But too much sun can be bad for your health. Approximately 80,000 Canadians every year are diagnosed with skin cancer. The sun however is very important to our health. It provides us with vitamin D which we need for our bones and it can lift our spirits. As with most good things, moderation and good sense is the key. Applying sunscreen is one of the best ways to protect your skin form the harmful effects of Ultra Violet (UV) radiation. SPF stands for “Sun Protection Factor”. It measures how much the sunscreen protects you skin from UVB radiation (the suns radiation responsible for surface redness and pain of a sunburn). The SPF represents how much longer you can be in the sun before getting a burn. For example someone with exposed skin and no sunscreen starts to burn in 2 minutes. That same person wearing SPF 15 would be able to be exposed to the sun for 30 minutes before burning (SPF 15X 2mins). The ingredients in sunscreen can work in 2 different ways to shield your skin from the sun’s damaging UV rays. Physical ingredients reflect the light. Chemical ingredients absorb the light into themselves. Many formulas use both types of ingredients, called “broad spectrum”, this is the type most recommended. No sunscreen is waterproof. Even “water resistant” formulas must be reapplied after swimming or showering so remember to apply liberally (2-3 tablespoons) evenly over body after getting wet. Sunscreens do have an expiration
date so be sure to check the stamped date given on the bottle. If you do get a sunburn treat by applying a cool compress for 24-48 hours. Drink lots of water to keep from feeling dehydrated. You can take pain medication if you experience pain. If you have blisters on the burn it is more severe and you should see a doctor. Ask your Live Well Pharmacist for advice on sunburn relief. The Goal is to have fun while staying safe. Here are some basic rules: • If you apply other products double check with your Pharmacist about which products to use first Example Insect repellent should be applied 15 minutes prior to sunscreen • Cover up whenever possible • Avoid the sun at its peak between 11am to 4pm • Wear a hat whenever possible to keep sun’s rays off the back of the neck, face and scalp. Prime areas for skin cancer • Protect eyes by wearing sunglasses • Apply sunscreen 20 minutes prior to going out in the sun and always use a minimum of SPF 15 • If you take any prescription drugs check to see if they can make you more sun sensitive. phenomenal series of performances at the Games in Nanaimo last week, winning seven medals in the pool. The 14-yearold won gold in the 100-metre freestyle and the 4x50 medley relay; silver in the 200 individual medley, 100 butterfly and 50 free; and bronze in the 200 free and the 4x50 free relay. She’s always looked up to Hayden, who participated in the 1998 BC Summer Games en route to his glittering international career, and last week’s results give fuel to her own dreams in the sport. “I’ve been following Brent Hayden’s path forever,” said Kienas, who is going into Grade 10 at Hatzic Secondary. “He also went to the BC Summer Games, and now I have too. I’m hoping to follow his tracks and go to the Olympics just like him. “(After the BC Games) I feel like I have a good shot at really improving and putting myself out there for people to see that I am a good swimmer. I want to get there.” Kienas competed in eight different swimming events at the BC Games over three days – the 400 IM is the only one she didn’t medal in – and halfway through that jam-packed schedule, fatigue started catching up with her. “I was like, ‘I need to go sleep!’” she related with a chuckle. “But I couldn’t, because I had other finals coming up. I just kind of pulled through. “I thought I might win maybe one or two medals, but not

The Nikki Werner Band will be performing at the next Twilight Concert at Fraser River Heritage Park on July 30. There will be no concert tonight (July 25) as the Mission Folk Music Festival is taking place. Hailing from the Fraser Valley, the Nikki Werner Band is a new country group that has been around since the summer of 2000. Werner, a four-time B.C. Country Music Award nominee, has performed across B.C. and Alberta. The band performs a vivid set of music ranging from their own original songs to a variety of old and new country. Their cover repertoire ranges from the standards of Emmy Lou Harris and Don Williams to the sounds of Faith Hill and Martina McBride. The Envision Twilight Concerts take place every Wednesday and Friday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. until Aug. 29. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and settle in for the show. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. the 5.7L Hemi V8 with 360hp, moving all that power to four wheels through an 8-speed automatic. City fuel economy can be frightening but I was surprised at how good this truck is, even when taking advantage of the new 120 km/h speed limit on the Coquihalla highway. The Durango put in a solid 11.8 L/100km, with more than 900 km driven. Keep in mind I didn’t soft foot my way to or from Kelowna. I did notice that the fuel economy improved vastly the closer I stayed to 100 km/h. The handling is a bit top-heavy in the corners, especially at higher speeds, but after some initial body roll, the Durango is very stable. One notable feature is the automatic fantastic adaptive cruise control, making the ride very enjoyable. Verdict If you drive in the city, the base 3.6L V6 engine might be a better choice based on fuel consumption but, if you drive a lot on the highway or tow a boat (3,265 kg towing capacity), the
Hemi is the right choice. Power was always there to pass and pull up a hill and the fuel economy can be good if the driver watches their speed. The V8 has the ability to switch off four of the eight cylinders when the truck is under light load and accessing this as often as possible makes a big difference. Another thing to consider is price: the Durango is not inexpensive, starting at $39,995 for the V6 and running up to $52,495 for the top Citadel V8. My family loved spending time in the Durango, we all had a lot of space and the trip was effortless. Our next adventure is to Portland, Oregon in the Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel. Touring the Outback around The Rock To think, on December 12, 1901, the first transatlantic wireless signal was received by Guglielmo Marconi at that spot is a fascinating piece of history. Interestingly, my phone whistles telling me I’ve received a message. As I walk towards the allnew 2015 Subaru Outback, I realize that this vehicle is also making its own little history. Touted as the world’s first sport utility wagon, it’s now 20 years old and better than ever. There’s an all-new exterior look, the interior is much more refined, there’s a vibrant gauge cluster, a new audio system, and around back, there’s a total of 1005L of cargo capacity (that’s up 33L from the 2014 model.) There’s also a choice of two engines, a humble 2.5L, 4-cylinder with 175 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, or a more potent 3.6L, 6-cylinder with 256 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque. The latter of the two engines is what powered me around “The Rock” – not to be confused with Dwayne Johnson, the actor and former WWE star – but Newfoundland.

Looking out into the Atlantic, another iceberg lazily floats by as the humpback whales are out and breathing. I could get used to this, along with the companionship of the 2015 Subaru Outback.
With only a couple of days to figure out some adventures, time would be tight, but I’d enjoy each minute of it. Complete with a hightorque Lineartronic CVT, I had the option to up and downshift through the Outback’s simulated gears, in case I needed to pass cars en route to my various adventures. First: sea kayaking in Cape Broyle. Though the drive from downtown St. John’s is only about 66 kilometres, I’ve learned that giving yourself a little extra time when going anywhere is a good idea. Let’s just say the city wasn’t built on a grid so it’s not always a straight shot getting out. And even though you’re on roadways, they’re not highways. Furthermore, not everyone was on such a tight time budget as I was! That said, when I was happily soaking in the surroundings, I did so in peace and quiet. It’s amazing how serene the cabin remains even at highway speeds, with the wind blowing furiously. Furthermore, the Outback

Exploring the eastern provinces in my Subaru
has incredible off-road capabilities, in case I needed to get to some hard-to-reach spots. With a ground clearance of 220mm – like the Forester and XV Crosstrek – it can tackle the trails without even breaking a sweat. Thanks to the X-Mode feature, it allows for even more traction in high-slip environments. This all-wheel drive vehicle is just as happy being on the road as it is playing in the puddles, mud or climbing rocks. Another adventure that wasn’t as physically demanding took me to Ferryland. Established in 1621, this community south of St. John’s rests quaintly on the coast. While many clusters of homes do too, this one is particularly magical. After parking, it’s about a one-kilometre walk until you reach a lighthouse. Not just any lighthouse, but one that serves picnic lunches so you and your loved ones can enjoy a meal while sitting on blankets, partaking of a sandwich prepared on freshly baked bread, sipping homemade lemonade and breathing in the natural beauty of the open ocean. On to a higher paced adventure - sort of - was a stop in Brigus. One particular bridge was on my mind. The one that competitors in the Targa Newfoundland race fly over. The sign says 10 km/h. That’s not the case when drivers are blasting through the tiny waterfront community. But I wanted to be a part of the fun, even if I was at a complete standstill on the crossing. A trip to Newfoundland wouldn’t be complete without at trip to Cape Spear, Canada’s easternmost point. GRAHAM DONALD GARDNER 66, of Abbotsford passed away on July 10th, 2014 at Abbotsford Regional Hospital. He was born May 21st, 1948, in Abbotsford, BC. He is survived by brothers, Gerald and Gregory Gardner. A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 25th, at 02:00 p.m., at Henderson’s Funeral Home, 34537 Marshall Road, Abbotsford, BC. Graham was a true character and had many friends. All who knew him are invited to attend. Dale is survived by his girlfriend Jeseka, son Kash Quinn Neumann, parents Toddy (Bryan) and Henry (Tina), grandparents Omi and Opa, brother Dan (Brooklyn), aunts and uncles Cindy and Ernie and Angela and Bill, cousins Marla, Isaak, Kolby, Kelsi plus many more cousins. He is predeceased by his Grampa and Gramma Quinn and Uncle Bubba. Dale was an avid skateboarder, snowboarder and he loved working out in the gym. He loved his nieces, nephews and cousins very much. He had many people that loved him, too many to name but you know who you are. Service to be held on July 26, at 2 pm North Valley Baptist, 32715 Cherry Ave. with clergy Doug Dunbar officiating. Ann contributed over 20 years of volunteer work to Lions Gate Hospital. By request of the family there will be no service. Instead a private gathering for family and close friends will be held. Born in Mission Hospital, passed away July 20th at the Palliative Care Abbotsford Hospital. Predeceased by his father Simon and mother Natalie and brother Daryl. Doug is survived by his wife of 55 years Elaine (Kieler) Sward, sons James (Robyn) and Robert, daughter Kelley (Chet) Powell, grandchildren Linsay (Dave) Ogden, Brandon (Leah) Sward, Bryce Sward, Taylor Powell, Joey Powell, three great grandchildren, brother Ken (Ethel) Sward, many nieces and nephews. Doug worked for the Bank of Nova Scotia (1958 - 1975), Winde Pacific (1975 - 1991), Savona Hotel (1991 - 1995), and at Shake & Shingle as a contract negotiator. He was a member of the Chilliwack & Mission Curling Club, Rotary (Chilliwack & Mission), Citizen on Patrol, Lions Savona. He loved fishing and hunting. A memorial service will be held August 2, 2014 at 1:00 pm at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, 32420 7th Ave., Mission. Pastor Alan Boerner, Reverend Gloria Kieler officiating. FRASER VALLEY REGIONAL DISTRICT NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING NOTICE is hereby given that, pursuant to Section 892 of the Local Government Act, the Fraser Valley Regional District will conduct a Public Hearing with respect to Fraser Valley Regional District OCP Amendment Bylaw No. 1278, 2014 [hereinafter referred to as Bylaw 1278], and Fraser Valley Regional District Zoning Amendment Bylaw No. 1277, 2014 [hereinafter referred to as Bylaw 1277]. The Public Hearing will be conducted on Thursday August 7, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at the FVRD Deroche Ofmce located at 10220 N. Deroche Rd, Deroche, BC. The purpose of Bylaw 1278, 2014 is to amend the Ofmcial Community Plan designation of a portion of the property from the Rural (R) designation to the Institutional (I) designation. The purpose of Bylaw 1277, 2014 is to rezone a portion of the property from the Rural 1 (R-1) zone to Civic Assembly (P-1) to facilitate the development of a Formation House. A Formation House is a religious institution for long-term accommodation and education. The Formation House proposal involves the construction of a new 1,069 sq.m (11,500 sq.ft) building on the property that would contain a mix of residential and assembly uses including sleeping rooms (dorms), a 75 sq.m (800 sq.ft) chapel, ancillary ofmces, amenity spaces such as a kitchen and a basement.
