Harry Kuiack flicks a switch. The sound of an engine fills the air before a churning conveyer belt sends a thick swath of weeds,

freshly plucked from the waters of Glen Lake, move up the belt to fill a bin to the brim with the shimmering vegetation. Despite spending 15 years weeding the lake he has lived on for almost four decades, the Langford resident returns annually to take part in the harvest. “As one of the fortunate people that do live on this lake, I think we have a responsibility to be stew-

ards of the lake,” he said. “This is my opportunity to give back to the community by harvesting the weeds each year.” The semi-retired alarm systems integrator cuts the invasive Brazlilian elodea from the lake bottom with the weed harvesting barge, which is fitted with gyrating teeth that run along an adjustable hydraulic arm that can go as deep as five feet below the sur-

face. The arms snip thick weeds at the stem, which are collected onto the barge, brought to shore and sent up a conveyor belt that carries it into the bin. When the bin fills up, Alpine Disposal hauls it away for use as fertilizer. The City of Langford picks up the tab for repairs and diesel fuel. “When we first bought (our) property 20 years ago, you

couldn’t row a boat past our place because the weeds were so thick,” said Geoff Hett, who lives on Langford Lake and takes his turn using the cutting barge when it gets moved over to his lake. “It was impossible to swim here before now it is really quite different.” PLEAsE sEE: Operators needed, Page A18

Youth project hosting final reunion Monday Loss of Pathway Project will be felt in community: co-ordinator Arnold Lim News staff

The Pathway Project is almost gone, but it won’t be forgotten.

The employment and life skills program, which has focused on at-risk youth in the community, closes its doors soon. A final reunion will be held Monday to celebrate the 49 groups and hundreds of youth that benefitted from the program over the past 13 years. “We just wanted to have some kind of closure around that,” said Pathway Project co-ordinator Randy Waldie. “For some of the

youth (it’s been) a long time. Some have not lived in one place for six months (at a time). The physical building represents, for some, a place that is stable. Saying goodbye to it seemed the appropriate thing to do.” Changes made this year to government funding for youth employment left Pathway, which operated most recently under the WorkLink community employment centre on Sooke Road, with-

out the money to continue. Although many of the decorations and photographs that once lined the walls of its Goldstream Avenue office have already been taken down, meeting one last time – amongst friends who share a common bond – was an important part of the process of letting this “piece of the fabric of the community” go, Waldie said. “We built such a community with the youth over the years

(that) we are in pretty regular contact with youth from just about every group. That is going back seven, eight years and even beyond that. One of our traditions with Pathway is work within a circle and we can sit in the circle one last time.” The free public event takes place at 847 Goldstream Ave., behind Tim Horton’s on July 28 between 4 and 6 p.m. alim@vicnews.com

Langford Pkwy. pipeline move on schedule Facility closures are planned for the first week of August Arnold Lim News staff

Langford’s natural gas pipeline relocation project has passed the halfway point. The relocation of a 200-metre stretch of underground pipes adjacent to Westhills Stadium’s turf field is “a little bit ahead of schedule” and on course for completion the week of Aug. 18, said Langford’s director of engineering Michelle Mahovlich. The 10-inch natural gas pipe is being moved from the south side of Langford Parkway to the north side for both safety and to allow for extra stadium parking. Construction began July 2 and continues with a few more inconveniences before wrapping up next month. “Things have been going relatively smoothly and as planned,” she said. “We are doing some welding Aug. 5, 6 and 7 when we connect the pipeline, welding onto the live gas main. Those days there are full road closures and all facilities at City Centre

Ken Lavigne is coming home for B.C. Day. Following recent performances in South Korea and San Francisco, the Canadian tenor and former Colwood resident returns to the West Shore to launch the B.C. Day Celebration Performing Arts Festival, not far from the neighbourhood where he grew up. “I couldn’t have planned it better … It’s my old stomping grounds so I am always welcoming opportunities to go back and revisit those locations and perform here,” he said. “Generally, the summer festivals are not part of my regular touring year. I’m usually on the other end in the audience watching the other performances, but I have to admit I get a little jealous. I wanted to be a part of it too and I am honoured to be invited.” The former Sangster elementary student performs his first concert here since 2012, anchoring the Church of the Advent concert Aug. 2 in Colwood, supported by special guests the Cool Beans Trio. The free portion of the festival happens B.C. Day (Aug. 4) with live performances at Westhills Stadium throughout the day. “It’s just a super opportunity to have a small venue to enjoy Ken’s music and learn about new emerging artists in our community with respect to B.C. Day,” said Laura Davis, a board member on the West Shore Arts Council. “There is just so many different types of music as well as dance and theatre. It’s an opportunity to experience many different facets of the performing arts.” A partnership between the West Shore Arts Council and Westhills, the free portion of the festival includes performances by the Four Seasons Musi-

Future pathways seem uncertain Soon a successful program that has provided a place of comfort, a chance to build life and employment skills and hope for moving forward in an employment based world, will close its doors. The Pathway Project, overseen by WorkLink – the local employment skills office for the Funding cuts WorkBC are part of a sad province’s program – is a victim of government funding financial reality cuts. As its outgoing co-ordinator can attest, its absence will be noted by the at-risk youth who have come through its doors in recent times and over the past 13 years. At the same time, the West Shore and WorkLink have welcomed a newcomer to the employment skill-and self-esteem building crowd, Bridges for Women. The 26-year-old Victoria-based organization has long served women from the West Shore and as far away as Sooke, who have suffered abuse and/or trauma in their lives and are looking for signs of hope to move on with their lives in a emotionally healthy way. Both programs are designed to give people who may have been dealt a lousy set of cards in life, and those who may have made some unhealthy choices in past, a hand up rather than a handout. We like that approach, since it helps people take responsibility for their own well-being while also teaching them there are people who really do care what happens to them. The difficult thing about good organizations that count on government funding or private donations to survive is they are only one or two funding cuts away from extinction. It’s not so different from individuals who are one or two paycheques away from being homeless. We hope the services provided by the Pathway Project will be taken on by some other organization. It may be difficult to find one whose staff care as much for their clients as these folks do, but the main goal is to avoid having young people fall through the cracks and take the wrong path in life.

Lunchtime panel discussion touches on Games legacy A panel of four Royal Roads University professors will tackle the topic of the legacy of the 1994 Commonwealth Games, 20 years after they were hosted in Greater Victoria. Next Tuesday’s free public discussion, set for noon to 12:30 in the university’s Centre for Dialogue, Learning and Innovation is titled Communication Matters: the Commonwealth Games. The panelists will debate the cultural and economic legacy of the event as it

relates to the local area as well as from a global perspective. Jennifer Walinga, director of the university’s School of Communication and Culture and one of the panelists, is excited to talk about this topic with the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow being the 20th Games ever and Greater Victoria looking back 20 years at its own Games. “I think we always want to highlight the role of communication in culture in any event,” she

said. “The role that it plays, the leverage it offers and what kind of values are being communicated throughout the event.” Another question up for debate is whether the Commonwealth Games enacted social change on a local or global perspective, she said. Sporting events can have a real impact, Walinga added, especially in the areas of supporting people who are pursuing healthy activities. The 2010 Olympics, in which

Canada won the most gold medals seemed to give our country greater confidence, she said. “And that’s the kind of social change you’re looking for from an event like this.” The most prominent physical legacy from the Games is Saanich Commonwealth Place, while a legacy fund established at the time is helping to operate the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence. Other panelists include the School of Communication and

Culture professor Michael Real, a media and sports expert; and associate professor Julia Jahansoozi, whose doctorate is in public relations, as well as School of Tourism and Hospitality Management associate professor Eugene Thomlinson, who has more than 15 years’ experience in the tourism industry. Help Prevent Heart Attacks with Vitamin C and Lysine Powder W. Gifford-Jones, MD

hy is heart attack the number one killer in this country? Ninety-nine percent of doctors say it’s due to atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries) and that cholesterol lowering drugs are the primary way to treat it. But I suggest cardiologists have closed minds and are ignoring facts that could save thousands of North Americans from coronary attack. Vitamin C is required to manufacture healthy collagen, the glue that holds coronary cells together, just like mortar is needed for bricks. Lysine, like steel rods in cement, makes collagen stronger. Two-time Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Linus Pauling reported twenty-five years ago it takes a mere 10 milligrams to prevent scurvy, but several thousand to prevent heart attack. Williams Stehbens, Professor of Anatomy at Wellington University in New Zealand, proved Pauling was right. Stebhens’ research showed that coronary arteries closest to the heart are under the greatest pressure. This causes collagen to fracture resulting in the formation of a blood clot and death.

I also believed the research of Pauling and Stehbens irrefutable. Now, the work of Dr. Bush has convinced me my decision was prudent. But to take large doses of vitamin C and lysine requires swallowing many pills daily. It’s a tall order for those who dislike swallowing one pill. So for several years I’ve been trying to find a company that would manufacture a combination of vitamin C and lysine powder. Now Medi-C Plus™ is available at health food stores and specialty pharmacies. The dosage for the Medi-C Plus combination is one flat scoop mixed with water or juice with breakfast and the evening meal. Those at greater risk should take one flat scoop three times a day. This column does not recommend that those taking CLDs should stop them. That is a decision that can only be made by patients and doctors. As for me – I bet my life on vitamin C and lysine! I turned 90 this year.

Dr. Sydney Bush, an English researcher, has now proven that vitamin C can reverse atherosclerosis. Bush took retinal photographs, then started his patients on high doses of vitamin C and lysine. One year later additional pictures showed atherosclerosis had regressed in retinal arteries. Sixteen years ago following my own coronary attack, cardiologists claimed it was sheer madness for me to refuse cholesterol-lowering drugs. Instead, I decided to take high doses of vitamin C plus lysine with breakfast and the evening meal. I knew that Dr. Graveline, a physician and NASA astronaut, had twice developed transient global amnesia from taking cholesterol lowering drugs (CLD’s). I was also aware that patients have died from CLDs. Others have developed kidney, liver and muscle complications.

The handling is a bit top-heavy in the corners, especially at higher speeds, but after some initial body roll, the Durango is very stable. One notable feature is the automatic fantastic adaptive cruise control, making the ride very enjoyable. Verdict If you drive in the city, the base 3.6L V6 engine might be a better choice based on fuel consumption but, if you drive a lot on the highway or tow a boat (3,265 kg towing capacity), the

Hemi is the right choice. Power was always there to pass and pull up a hill and the fuel economy can be good if the driver watches their speed. The V8 has the ability to switch off four of the eight cylinders when the truck is under light load and accessing this as often as possible makes a big difference. Another thing to consider is price: the Durango is not inexpensive, starting at $39,995 for the V6 and running up to $52,495 for the top Citadel V8. My family loved spending time in the Durango, we all had a lot of space and the trip was effortless. Our next adventure is to Portland, Oregon in the Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel. Another adventure that wasn’t as physically demanding took me to Ferryland, south of St. John’s.

After parking, it’s about a one-kilometre walk until you reach a lighthouse. Not just any lighthouse, but one that serves picnic lunches. A trip to Newfoundland wouldn’t be complete without a trip to Cape Spear; Canada’s easternmost point. Looking out into the Atlantic, another iceberg lazily floats by as the humpback whales are out and breathing. A cool ocean breeze blows the salty air around. I could get used to this, along with the companionship of the 2015 Subaru Outback.

St. John’s, Newfoundland: Atop Signal Hill is an arrow that points westward. It reads “Vancouver, 5,031 km/3,126 mi.” I’m a long way from home. But as I look over the rock wall of the historical landmark in St. John’s, , I don’t feel so far away. As I walk towards the allnew 2015 Subaru Outback, I realize that this vehicle is also making its own little history. Touted as the world’s first sport utility wagon, it’s now 20 years old and better than ever. There’s an all-new exterior look, the interior is much more refined, there’s a vibrant gauge cluster, a new audio system, and around back, there’s a total of 1,005L of cargo capacity (that’s up 33L from the 2014 model.) There’s also a choice of two engines, a humble 2.5L, 4-cylinder with 175 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, or a more potent 3.6L, 6-cylinder with 256 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque. The latter of the two engines is what powered me around The Rock.

The Nissan 370Z (Zee or Zed) Roadster oozes youthful energy with its edgy design and wholehearted performance. Add warm California air to enhance the open sports car driving experience and roll back a few years, at least temporarily. My two days in L.A. were spent mainly in and around Pasadena, a short freeway drive (16 km) northeast of the downtown core. There are no beaches, no piers, no theme parks, no giant roller coasters and no kids – OK, just a few little darlings. It does have beautifully preserved historic buildings, magnificent gardens, art galleries, museums and a vibrant “old town” district with theatres, bars and many great restaurants. This “Z” was designed by a Canadian. A talented young man called Randy Rodriguez from Surrey, B.C. who works at Nissan’s US design centre in California. That magic moment of divine inspiration for the Z’s fluid styling lines apparently came while he was watching “Shark Week” on the Discovery Channel. He also has cleverly incorporated some subtle styling references to the original 240Z, a classic sports car. The Z’s one-touch, auto-latching convertible top can open or close in about 20 seconds and comes with a glass rear window and an integrated electric rear window defroster. It also comes with a fabric inner liner and a hinged metal body-colour tonneau cover that gives a top-down 370Z a classy finished look. This Z has a lighter and more rigid body structure than its predecessor and a more powerful 332-horsepower 3.7-litre DOHC V6 engine. There’s a lovely “growl” from its dual exhaust pipes when you prod the gas pedal, and drive

goes to the rear wheels via a viscous-type limited slip differential. A noteworthy high-tech engine enhancement is its Variable Valve Event and Lift Control (VVEL) system, which adds extra power, yet improves fuel efficiency and provides cleaner exhaust emissions. Wandering on less travelled roads towards the towering San Gabriel Mountains, which create a picturesque backdrop to Pasadena, was an opportunity to play with the Z’s delightful rev-matching 7-speed automatic transmission. A 6-speed manual transmission can also be fitted (via a sport package) and it comes with a downshift rev-matching feature, a “world first” for Nissan engineering. It’s a snug driver cockpit that offers limited storage (although there is some extra space behind the seats), a single cup-holder centre console and a pull-up style park brake. I used all

“It’s important to clean up the swimming areas … and get (the weeds) out of the lakes so people can enjoy the water. It could actually be dangerous if someone gets tangled up.” Hett, who has done the task for 20 years, said volunteers are needed to help maintain Langford Lake. He hopes others will help take on the mantle of volunteering for a couple of days on Glen Lake, Langford Lake or Florence Lake, which share the use of the harvester throughout the summer. “A lot of people like me are getting older and last year we were at a crucial point where we didn’t have enough operators,” he said. “It is a fairly easy machine to operate and most people could learn to operate it in a couple of hours. I am hoping we might get eight to 10 operators (at Langford Lake). At the moment we have four of us.” The harvester and connecting conveyor belt stay at each lake for three to four weeks when volunteers help navigate the orange barge, trimming the weeds from select areas of the popular lakes. “The lake is a lot cleaner than it was and whenever we harvest, the wave action … cleans up the lake even more and puts more oxygen into the water,” said Pat Geary, the co-ordinator for Florence Lake. “There is a lot of areas we don’t touch because we use them for wetlands. (Florence) lake is a really nice wildlife lake with otter and mink that live adjacent to the water or in the water.” He said most people respect the lake and the work the volunteers do, but he also hopes to see the volunteerism continue throughout the years to keep the lake as clean and safe for people as it is for the animals. “I have had a number of comments from people on how nice the lake is and that is why I do it. I just know that if we don’t do anything, eventually it would completely close in,” he said. Since Langford put the weed cutter into the parks scheme, it has allowed residents to do their part, Geary added. Anyone interested in volunteering can contact Geoff Hett at 250-478-2727. Naomi Ko is racking up plenty of frequent flyers points these days. The talented golfer out of Metchosin is chasing her dream and gaining valuable experience playing tournaments and courses from California to New Jersey, not to mention some of the toughest Canadian junior and women’s amateur events on the summer schedule. This week, the 16-year-old Royal Colwood and national development team member is in Woodstock, Ont. contesting the Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship, trying to better last year’s 23rd place tie. A lot has changed in a year, not least of which is her improved tournament record. Among her 2014 accomplishments, she captured the B.C. junior women’s crown in Kamloops earlier this month, then followed it up a week later by tying for fourth at the B.C. Women’s Amateur, just six shots back of winner Taylor Kim of Surrey. While she was unsuccessful in Oregon last week at gaining one of a handful of regional spots into the U.S. Women’s Amateur, she has nonetheless turned heads with her play. She won the CN Future Links Ontario championship and came third in the Pacific version of that series. And she posted second- and sixth-place finishes, respectively, in American Junior Golf Association tournaments in St. Louis and Chandler, Ariz. “My confidence is way better than last year,” Ko said during a recent visit home. “Last year was all right. But out of playing four rounds in a tournament, I’d shoot in the 80s at least once. “Mentally and physically I wasn’t that prepared. It was first year on the national (development) team and I didn’t know what to expect. This year I came in knowing (more).” South Korean-born Ko, who turns 17 in September when she heads back to Claremont secondary, has worked hard on her short game in recent months. “Last year I was not able to get my chips close enough to the green. That’s a big game changer.

This year, it’s like, ‘have fun, do my best.’ It’s really how you manage yourself out on the course and I’ve worked on that mentally in the off-season.” Ko, whose parents Tony and Adriana operate the Metchosin Country Store at Happy Valley and Metchosin roads, already has a full-ride scholarship to North Carolina State locked up for 2015. Last weekend’s B.C. Lacrosse Association pee wee A1 gold medal game ended the argument over which team was better, the Juan de Fuca Whalers or Coquitlam. Going into the provincial final in Richmond, the mainland team had beat the Whalers three times this season – they were Juan de Fuca’s only losses – including a 6-5 win in the B.C.s round robin. Led by the stellar goaltending of tournament most valuable player Adam Bland, who turned aside 42 of 44 shots, the Whalers put it all together and humbled Coquitlam 7-2 to cap their season. “A lot of people said we’re an OK team with a great goalie. I told them we’re a great team with an even better goalie,” said Whalers head coach Teddy Jenner. He noted that Bland tends to get down on himself after goals, but his performance in the final showed great focus for a young player. “He was a rock when we needed him

BUYER’S TIP | Research the amenities around prospective neighbourhoods before making an offer

DFH Realty agent Mike Hartshorne lists four main categories of properties that come available for rent. The first are in purposebuilt rental buildings, of which some new ones are coming on stream on the West Shore; Westridge on Wale Road and developments in the 500-block of Goldstream Ave., on Bryn Maur Road and Station Avenue at Jacklin Road. The next category is condominiums being rented by their owners, which only happens in buildings that allow non-owner residents. A third is in single-family detached homes that have a suite built into them, most commonly in the basement. The final type is detached carriage homes built adjacent to existing homes. These units are often rented to family members or caregivers, but they allow landlords some separation from their tenants.

Changing buyers’ minds about West Shore Agents adept at showing clients value for money Don Descoteau News staff

After living in a wartime home near Hillside Mall in Victoria for about 35 years, Betty and Keith McDougall were ready to make a change in their living arrangements. They were, and still are, active seniors who found their longtime home was simply getting “too big for us and too much to look after,” Betty says. The couple had been coming out to the Triangle Mountain area for several years to visit their son and his family, and Betty remembers saying at times, “I don’t want to move out here.” But a trip to Superstore in Langford about five years ago got her started looking around more than she had previously in the area. By the time they moved to a one-level home in the Westhills in 2012, the couple had been following the development for a couple of years and waiting to see for just the right type of home to be built. They found with the amenities that were already built nearby and those coming on stream, it was tough to beat. Keith had long resisted a move to an area that still seemed, to a city dweller, “way out in the boondocks.” When he heard Langford Lanes had opened – the couple are both avid bowlers – he was convinced. “We were looking in Sidney and

The McDougalls, who were mortgage free and looking to scale down, are just one example of the type of buyers who are choosing the West Shore over the region’s core, say DFH Real Estate teammates Jenn Raappana and Mike Hartshorne. “When they get out to see what your dollar gets you, it’s easier to make that decision,” Raappana says. “We tend to get more people coming this way than going the other way (back into town).”

Hartshorne says there’s no doubt many people buy in the West Shore for price point and value and intend to return to town after building some equity. That phenomenon seems to be happening less, he says. “There’s a lot of people who have been coming out here for their kids’ activities for some time, and they just find it way more convenient to live out here,” he says. As for concerns over the commute, Hartshorne, who spent his formative years in Oak Bay, says people who have been in Victoria

for years tend to view it more negatively than out-of-town buyers. “It stops some people from looking, but it doesn’t necessarily stop people from buying.” He reiterates Raappana’s point that when people visit the area, see the housing options and the amenities, they get a better sense of what they can get for their money. With more businesses setting up shop in the West Shore all the time, both to meet the demand of the growing population and to address a shifting workforce – not to mention the growing number of home-based businesses – opportunities to live and work here are expanding, Raappana says. Many of Hartshorne’s clients appreciate the can-do attitude and entrepreneurial spirit here. “People like the West Shore because things change and improve,” he says, adding if there’s a lack of a certain service or activity, residents have a sense it’s coming at some point. Raappana looks at who’s moving in or staying and sees a broad demographic. “We don’t say it’s just families or retired people. It is really a good mix.” The McDougalls, who love to walk the trails around their home, ride their bikes and take their granddaughter to the Juan de Fuca pool, find they hardly ever go into Victoria anymore. Not only that, they’ve convinced several friends to move out and join them, for the value and the lifestyle. Says Hartshorne: “I think we’re in the business of changing people’s minds, especially people who may have grown up in town.”

HAFI Funds Home Modifications for Disabled Man When Lorie and Walter bought their home in Port Alberni 13 years ago they slowly began renovating the unfinished basement to accommodate Walter’s changing needs as his muscular dystrophy advanced. “The basement was a black hole when we moved in,” recalled Walter. “After 12 years of skimping and saving, we made the downstairs completely wheelchair accessible, except for the bathroom. It was way too small. I could only stand for about a minute and a half without collapsing in the shower stall and I could no longer pull myself out of the tub in the upstairs’ bathroom, even with Lorie’s help.” Through funding from BC Housing’s Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program, Walter and Lorie were able to work with a contractor to transform the space. A wall was removed to make room for a wheelin shower with benches, grab bars were installed, and the vanity and fixtures were relocated.

“ I just slide into the shower now,” said Walter. “I feel safer and no longer dread trying to wash myself.
