Compliance Energy CEO Steve Ellis vowed to re-submit an application for a coal mining operation 50 km north of Qualicum Beach by the end of this year — but some critics take his word with a grain of salt. “We hope to get it (the application) in before the end of the year,” Ellis told The NEWS Friday. Compliance has missed two self-imposed deadlines since May 2013 when the application for the Raven Underground Coal Project was rejected by the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) as it fell short on “required information.” Ellis said “it has been difficult to get it (application information) all together” but promised results by December at the latest. According to Compliance’s website (www.theravenproject. ca), the proposed coal mine expects to hire approximately 200 workers during construction, which would create up to 350 full-time jobs. The underground operation would be centred about five kilometres west of the Buckley Bay ferry terminal and the coal would be stored and shipped out of Port Alberni. Compliance has said three trucks an hour, 24 hours a day, will carry the coal from the mine to Port Alberni. However, John Snyder, leader of Coal Watch — a group opposed to the mine — doesn’t see the project going very far. “I’ve seen their timelines come and go,” said Snyder. “And these are self-imposed timelines.” Snyder said there continues to be “significant opposition.” “No social license has been granted,” he said, explaining the community as a whole does not support this project in its current state. “Social license is an important part of the puzzle.” Snyder said the primary concern is the location of the proposed mine which would sit near what he describes as “one of the richest shellfish areas in, probably, the world.” Moreover, Snyder said the mining industry is “unsustainable.” “The mining industry is cyclical,” he said. “All sorts of coal mines are shutting down.” Snyder said Compliance’s failure to meet application deadlines has left Coal Watch members “in a holding pattern” “We’re waiting for them to actually come up with a good application,” he said. “If and when they do that we’ll meet them head on. We’re not going anywhere — we live here.”

Motorcyclist injured in Bowser accident
Police said a Qualicum Beach man was rushed to Victoria General Hospital by ambulance Thursday (July 17) evening after a motorcycle accident in front of Nickolini’s Pizza in Bowser. Oceanside RCMP Cpl. Jesse Foreman said police were called to the scene at approximately 4:10 p.m. Foreman said the motorcyclist, in his early fifties, lost control and was ejected off his motorcycle landing on a nearby patch of grass. Foreman said the man sustained serious, but non life-threatening injuries. Nobody else was injured in the incident. — NEWS Staff
Project Lifesaver helps find lost people
Arrowsmith Search and Rescue (ASR) search manager Ken Neden is a big proponent of the Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation’s Project Lifesaver and wanted to clarify how it works. People with dementia can wear a radio transmitter that notifies their caregiver when they wander too far. The caregiver can then notify police, who notify ASR which has special equipment to track and find the individual. A shocked Parksville resident told The NEWS about a dumpster full of books behind Parksville Elementary School. Outgoing principal Mary Beil said that every library has a process to regularly get rid of books that are damaged, outdated, surplus or don’t fit the curriculum. She said that they hadn’t done that aggressively in a few years and they are getting rid of more than usual because the school is closing. They donated many books to the SOS, had boxes at the school for families to select from, and they are still moving “hundreds of boxes of
books” to other schools, she said. “There is a real sanctity of books, so this was really hard to do,” said district superintendent Rollie Koop adding that they provided each of the four closing elementary schools with a bin and are paying a premium to have the covers removed to recycle the paper. He said it is unusual to get rid of that many books, but they simply don’t have the space in the new combined schools and they did contact service groups but nobody wanted them. He said that on hearing the concerns he looked in the bin and found things like an encyclopedia from 1987 and a teacher’s resource book last signed out in 1997.

Eight local fire departments battled a blazing structure fire in the 3300 block of Palmer Road in Coombs which destroyed a two-story building July 15 at 12:30 a.m. Coombs-Hilliers Volunteer Fire Department fire chief Aaron Poirier said six people occupied the building when the fire started but everybody got out safely.
He said the source of the fire is still under investigation. He said 40 firefighters attended the scene from fire departments in Coombs, Errington, Dashwood, Qualicum Beach, Bow Horne Bay, Nanoose Bay, Lantzville and Parksville. Poirier said firefighters were on scene until 8:30 a.m. and the entire structure has been destroyed.

A 27-year-old former Parksville resident is making a documentary about the notorious 1997 sandcastle riot that changed the event forever. Jordan Minkoff, a 2004 Ballenas Secondary graduate, said he’s been interested in making a film about the riot for the last three years. “I can’t find a lot of information about it,” he told The NEWS from Vancouver Thursday. “Just the fact that there’s a story and it’s almost a myth makes it fun.” According to The NEWS archives from July 1997, a riot broke out that summer at the annual sandcastle festival hosted at Parksville Beach where approximately 1,000 people reportedly rioted, vandalized and looted the downtown core. Reports said 100 people were arrested, 16 of whom were from Parksville. The festival was canceled after the riot and when a new group formed to re-start the event it was considerably reconfigured as a more family-friendly event over many weeks instead of one hectic weekend. Minkoff said he is working with an intimate crew consisting of just two others, all of whom stopped in Parksville to start filming during this year’s opening weekend of the reincarnated sandcastle competition (July 12-13). Minkoff said he’s interviewed four people so far and is looking for people who want to be part of the documentary. “I’m trying to find, ideally, people who were involved (in the riots),” he said. “I’d like to get all sides — like people who thought it was the craziest night of their life and others who didn’t lose any sleep over it. I want to talk to young dudes boasting about whatever they

did that night and contrast it with other people’s stories.” Minkoff said he moved to Parksville with his parents the year after the riot happened when he was in sixth grade, meaning he’s heard a lot of anecdotes about the night but he was not present. “I can’t find a lot of information about the riot,” he said, adding he sometimes wonders if it even happened at all. “I’m trying to find out the truth about that night — I want to tell the story and hopefully people have different perspectives and it’s strange and funny and hopefully interesting and weird.” Minkoff, who now tours North America with his band Slam Dunk, said ever since he left Parksville nearly a decade ago he’s been intrigued with the sleepy, beach community. “I lived in Parksville for about six years and when I left I was pretty fascinated with it,” he said. “It was weird that there was a riot there over sandcastles. It sounded normal when I was there but now that I’ve left it sounds weird — especially when I tell other people
about it.” Minkoff said the whole project is in its infant stages and the direction of the film will depend on how interviewees recall the riot. “I don’t want to bum anyone out by taking the piss out of the whole event,” he said. “I’ll do the interviews and see what people say — if people look back on it and laugh then I’ll go with that feeling, but if people say it was an awful night then we’ll go with that.” Minkoff said he has experience making music videos and shorter films but this will be the first feature documentary he’s ever produced. “I want to do a lot of cinematic, atmospheric stuff and create more of a feeling than what a traditional documentary does,” he said, adding there is a limited budget for the project. “So it might end up being quite strange and weird but hopefully creative.” If you would like to be interviewed, or have any information or archives from the night of the July 1997 sandcastle riot in Parksville contact Minkoff at 778-686-4973 or e-mail jordanminkoff@gmail.com.

Public transit use up in RDN
Ridership is on the rise. According to a B.C. Transit news release ridership in the Regional District of Nanaimo went up 5.3 per cent recording 2,796,621 passenger trips in the 2013-2014 year. “It is rewarding to see that our ridership is growing,” said RDN Chair Joe Stanhope. “More and more, RDN transit is becoming a preferred transportation choice for commuters within the region.” Stanhope said the RDN’s expanded service hours and new CNG (natural gas) fleet demonstrate “commitment to a future where public transit is a frequent transportation choice.” The introduction of B.C. Transit’s CNG fleet
over the winter helped raise the profile of public transit in the region. At the start of the fiscal year, the system added 5,000 annual service hours and a new Route #25 BC Ferries. The extra hours provided better coverage to Vancouver Island University, Parksville, Qualicum Beach and Cedar. Parksville-Qualicum MLA Michelle Stilwell said it’s good to see local support for transit. “Ridership growth shows that transit is playing a significant role in helping people get to where they need to be, in an efficient and environmentally friendly way,” she said. —NEWS Staff

t was the perfect day for flying a kite on Saturday: a pleasant wind and bright, patchy clouds that offered sunny breaks. Kitefest took place on both Saturday and Sunday in Parksville’s Community Park where kite enthusiasts off all ages came together to be entertained, have some food and most importantly, fly kites. There were vendors selling kite-related merchandise, activities like kite-building, and the ever popular Teddy Bear Drop, where children chased down parachuting bears dropped 90 feet by the Parksville Fire Department.

Gun control and gay marriage differ neighbours Arthur Black’s take on the differences between Canadians and our American counterparts
Make no mistake about it — Noah Kilpatrick is a victim of discrimination. The 15 year-old student at the Faith Fellowship Christian School in Waterdown, New York has been relentlessly bullied and denigrated, not just by his fellow students but by members of the school faculty. “They told me that (my people) were all stupid,” Kilpatrick recalls. He says they insulted his home and made fun of his country. It’s a familiar story, alas. First Nations people know the experience only too well, as do Latinos and blacks. Even though they’ve lived in Waterdown for a decade, his mother has pulled Noah out of school. “No 15-year-old should have to question his self-worth at the hands of a teacher,” she said. He’ll finish his Grade Nine at home. After that, they’ll probably move back to Ottawa. Good move, folks. Election issues
P
arksville Mayor Chris Burger isn’t ready to say, either way, if he will run for re-election in November. He has no problem, however, identifying what could be key issues for voters. One of those that could be hot is what kind of tax exemption, if any, should be given to non-profit organizations in the city. The Legion, curling club and lawn bowling club have been front and centre in the discussion lately, but the effects could be wider reaching. Burger and others at city hall seem to want to dump the new policy at the feet of the council advisory committee that brought it to the table after a request from council for them to look into the matter. At the end of the day it was the elected officials who made the decision, and the buck stops with them. Burger, to his credit, doesn’t see it as a dead issue. “It should be an election discussion,” Burger told us last week. “Perhaps we have misread the community. There are valid points on both sides.” City council painted itself into a corner by setting a hard number for the total dollars of all tax exemptions allowed, $225,000. So, they had to fit all the round pegs into the square hole of that hard cap. And, what’s worse, they set up categories where some groups — social services agencies and churches, for example — were treated differently than others like the curling club. You can present a good argument that people who keep active by curling or lawn bowling save the health system and social services agencies a lot of money. And for some, with all due respect to religious organizations, the curling or hockey rink is their church. As Burger said, there are good arguments on both sides. The city might say they it deliver the services it delivers if it exempts all non-profits. Really? We have yet to find a person who says he/she would be opposed to another $20 on their annual property tax bill in order to spare the non-profits. Regardless, we expect this issue will raise its head during the municipal elections, and we hope each and every candidate presents a clear position. — Editorial by John Harding

I use the exercise equipment in Parksville Community Park (the outdoor adult fitness gym) nearly every day, as do other area residents. Quite often, parents and grandparents stop and let their very small children play and climb all over the equipment. They often hurt themselves as they are not using it correctly and are too small. They stand on the seats with their wet sandy shoes. I would like to see signage requiring a height and/or age restriction. We residents often have to wait for the kids to finish playing as their guardians believe it is an extension of the huge playground right next to it. Smarten up and behave responsibly with this equipment. It is not a playground. BRENDA PEACHEY Parksville
COUNCIL BIAS I have now been retired for two years in Qualicum Beach and have watched with “interest” the ongoing activities of the town’s mayor and councillors. I feel it’s just good old democracy at work by a hard working group, who all appear to have pretty decent moral compasses. In comparison though, I certainly cannot say the same about the absolutely disgraceful actions coming from eight of the nine current Nanaimo council members. On May 5, Nanaimo council voted 8-1 to tear up a contract and cancel a Christian-themed “Leadercast” event at the cityowned Vancouver Island Conference Centre. Coun. Fred Pattje, the author of the May 5 motion, apparently had “one or two” complaints that one of the sponsors, U.S. fast food chain Chick-Fil-A’s C.O.O., was a supporter of the traditional Christian view of

marriage, and not of same-sex marriage. Guest speakers on the simulcast included anti-Apartheid activist Desmond Tutu, Canadian-born writer Malcolm Gladwell and former U.S. First Lady Laura Bush. Despite Nanaimo’s cancellation, the telecast was hosted without incident in both Victoria and Vancouver, as well as 800 other communities around the world. Finally, after weeks of mounting pressure from religious groups and individuals, Nanaimo city council reluctantly back-pedaled and voted unanimously at a specially-called July 3 meeting to rescind their earlier May 5 decision. Nanaimo’s mayor also offered a formal apology. The B.C. Civil Liberties Association wrote Nanaimo city council July 4, stating that their May 5 motion amounted to discrimination on the basis of religion, and a violation of the freedom of assembly. Wow. What an incredible mess for Nanaimo, all started because a couple of complainants happened to disagree with the viewpoint of one of the event’s sponsors. Nanaimo residents should be super choked at these eight city councillors for, as I see it, discriminating against any religious organizations and/or people who would want to use publicly-owned buildings and they should demand to know how many tax dollars were spent in legal actions resulting from the cancellation of the Leadercast event . It is not the role of any government (municipal, provincial, or federal) to define what we believe or what our faith includes. It also vindicates a higher principle, showing that government must tread very very carefully when it seeks to impose policies contrary to our most cherished rights.

It seems to me that the government and teachers are so far apart that it is like Mars and Venus. To me, the fundamental problem is the lack of a defined working relationship. The government treats the teachers as employees, and they are acting as a very tough employer. Not very 21st century of you. The teachers treat the government as if they are in a well-meaning partnership looking out for the best interest of our children and the education system in B.C. What about the behavior of the government would suggest that this is a partnership? The losers are first and foremost the children, and secondly all of us, the taxpayers. We need the teachers to be defining the issues needing the attention of government, and at the same time we need our government to both react to the issues with goodwill and at the same time to remain fiscally responsible. It should be possible for the parties to work together for the overall betterment of the education system and the training of our children. But I don’t think that they alone have the capacity to define the nature of the partnership and how it should work to meet the needs of the children in a fiscally responsible environment. It is time for the children of B.C., the parents of children, and other taxpayers to have a dialogue that would shape such a partnership. If teachers will not oblige then perhaps we should be looking at an entirely new schooling model. If government is unwilling to oblige then perhaps we should all reduce our provincial tax burden by 10 per cent. Come on British Columbians, let’s take charge and solve this problem together.

Mekong ready to serve what you want

Parksville’s Mekong River Restaurant has a full menu, but a growing number of their regulars take advantage of their allergy and specialty diet options. “Anything you want, just tell us and we’ll customize it, no problem,” said Lee Phan, co-owner and cook with his wife La. He said about 99 per cent of their customers are repeat business, and about 30 per cent have some kind of special request, with gluten-free being the most popular option, “by far.” Along with the normally healthy selection of healthy, MSG free Vietnamese food, with other Asian influences, they are happy to work with any allergy including wheat, seafood and nuts, which Phan said brings people back time after time. Phan said their menu is a reflection of their 30 years experience in the business, learning what people want. Over that time special requests and dietary restrictions have increased steadily, and they still notice those requests going

up month after month. Phan and his wife moved to Canada from Vietnam at the same time in 1980, but met in Canada and have spent most of
the time since in the restaurant business. They started in Vancouver and then owned and operated Saigon Kitchen in Nanaimo for 17 years.
About five years ago, Phan said, they sold the restaurant and planned to stay home and take time for themselves, but quickly found they wanted to get back to work and found their current Parksville location — then a restaurant called Spinakers — for sale. The rest, as they say, is history. Today they are joined in the family business by their son Thien, along with several other loyal employees. Phan said aside from the special requests, their customers love the friendly service and the open kitchen where they can see their food being made. Among their customer’s favourites are the spring rolls, won ton soup, curries and chow mien. “The short ribs are really good, all their food is good,” said a regular customer passing by. Painters to fill Qualicum Beach Saturday Grand Prix d’Art will take place in conjunction with Art in Action and St. Mark’s Fair throughout town LISSA ALEXANDER reporter@pqbnews.com
A popular painting race in Qualicum Beach will have a new twist this year. The Old School House Art Centre’s (TOSH) Grand Prix d’Art has attracted people from around the Island and the lower mainland, as well as some visitors from further flung places. The event originated in France and involves painting en plein air, or outside on location. In past events artists would draw a location which would send them somewhere within the downtown core of Qualicum Beach and they would have three hours to paint something from that area, or their interpretation of something visible. This year, on July 26, artists will get to pick their own locations. Visitors and residents on the street are encouraged to watch as the masterpieces take shape. Local celebrated artist Dan Gray started the event in Qualicum Beach 23 years ago, after he returned from a trip to France. “We brought it back to the Old School House and at this time there wasn’t many [plein air] events,” he said. And now the movement has just blossomed,” he said adding these events now happen all over the world. Gray hasn’t missed a year, although he was a judge instead of a competitor last year. He said the event is great for people to see art being made but it’s also a great way for artists to try something new and
get over their fear of painting in public. “You don’t feel alone out there and it’s a really good step for someone who wants to try plein air painting in the city, just for the experience.” Executive director at TOSH, Corinne James, said it’s also nice for artists to come together instead of working in their studios where they can sometimes feel isolated. “It’s fun for them to have an event like this, a tongue-in-cheek sort of race with a friendly competitive feeling to it.” The Grand Prix d’Art begins at 11 a.m. and the work must be completed by 2 p.m. There is still room for more painters to join the fun and people can register right up until the morning of the event. A panel of three judges will determine the winner and the pieces will be on display and for sale at TOSH. All ages are welcomed and the youngest competitor was six years old. Complementing the Grand Prix on Saturday, the Art in Action Fair will begin at 9 a.m. with the Qualicum Beach Farmers’ Market and then thirty-five vendors will be set up in the parking lot around TOSH, including artists, artisans and community craft guilds. There will be demonstrations and opportunities for people to try their hand at some of the art forms. The Kids Art Tent will include pottery-making with Dee Aguilar where children can learn pottery skills and babies can even make a hand or foot print and come back later to collect it.

To his credit though, he concedes this in the sequel The Wealthy Barber Returns (2011). In his words: “I’m forced to admit that funds matching those criteria over the years have collectively underperformed the market. What’s worse, some of the management teams in whom I was most confident have posted the weakest returns. It’s frustrating, but past long-term performance has proven to have virtually no correlation to future performance.”
Still it’s a popular strategy to use past performance as an emotional button when promoting mutual funds. But as hopeful investors flock to the successful funds, cash levels grow, often at the most inopportune times: when markets are high. This forces the fund manager to make a choice: buy high, or sit on cash and wait for opportunities. Waiting can be costly though, as market timing frequently backfires, not to mention the fact that idle cash in a mutual fund is still subject to fees.
It is no secret that mutual funds are having a tough go of it lately, as a growing number of commentators, advisors, and investors look for alternatives. Exchange-traded funds, for example, have grown in popularity in recent years with their promise of near market-matching returns. Indeed the Wealthy Barber makes a case for these in his 2011 book The Wealthy Barber Returns. But ironically proponents of exchange-traded funds often still use past performance to make their case. It can be a compelling case, depending of course on which numbers you look at. According to Morningstar, over a 10 year period only 14 Canadian mutual funds have outperformed the iShares S&P/TSX 60 Index Fund (symbol XIU). However, let’s look at what has happened since 2011 -- a period during which the Canadian stock market has averaged only 4.36% (based on 3-year returns to November 30, 2013). By having the flexibility to underweight the weaker sectors, the number of Canadian equity funds that have bested the XIU has grown from 14 to over 200, with 57 of these actually doubling the XIU.

Local storyteller gets elected A resident of Qualicum Beach was just elected President of the Storytellers of Canada Conteurs du Canada (SC-CC) at their annual national conference held recently in Summerside, Prince Edward Island. Marva Blackmore is excited to take on the presidency of this prestigious national storytelling organization which functions as the national representative for those involved in maintaining and practicing the oral tradition of storytelling. For the last 23 years SC-CC’s mandate is to connect people, reflect culture and inspire discovery through the art of Storytelling. Blackmore has been a member of this
organization since 2001 and has served on the organization’s executive board as secretary and vice-president. A professional, performing storyteller for over 20 years, Blackmore has been organizing Tales for the Telling, Stories for Adults, at the McMillan Arts Centre in Parksville since 2012. She will continue these shows this October, giving her them a national focus this year. Blackmore has also been active with the Around Town Tellers in Nanaimo and was one of the founding members of the Mid-Island StoryTellers in the Parksville-Qualicum Beach area. —Submitted by Marva Blackmore/NEWS Staff

The B.C. Summer Games have come to a close and there are a good number of local athletes coming home with medals. The opening ceremonies were held Thursday evening at the Rotary Bowl in Nanaimo. Friday morning kicked off the three days of competition with over 3,200 athletes giving it everything they had. Chantal St. Laurent, from Parksville, looked calm, cool and collected on the water as she took home three gold medals, one in wake boarding, one in wake skate and one for the overall team win in towed water sports. Parksville’s Julie Preston was also a triple gold medalist, winning in solo and figures synchronized swimming, and the team event. On the wrestling mat, Parksville’s Ben Burgess and Luke Bromley both captured gold in the overall team category and silver in their weight classes. Burgess won silver in the boys’ 74 kg and Bromley in the 90 kg. Nanoose Bay’s Simon Morrison was part of the boys’ 4x400 meter relay team that took gold and he placed seventh in

the 200-meter and nineth in the 200-meter hurdles. Parksville’s Dalton Austin finished seventh in the boys Hammerthrow. Jack Confortin, also from Parksville, had a 10th
place finish in the 400 meter freestyle, 17th in the 400 meter individual medley and just missed the podium in the 800 meter freestyle, coming in fourth place. Alexandra Roberts, from Nanoose Bay,
finished 17th in the 400-meter freestyle and ninth in the 800-meter freestyle. Shayne Blandin also had a great weekend, as she came in sixth in the 50-meter freestyle, 50-meter backstroke and 100-meter freestyle. Parksville’s Mariah St. Pierre narrowly missed the podium too, finishing fourth in girls beach volleyball. A couple of local coaches won’t be going home empty handed either, as Deep Bay’s Bruce Biro was part of the bronze medal baseball team. Rowing coach Jonathan Rose, from Nanoose Bay, saw the girls’ doubles team earn silver and the boys’ doubles team take bronze. Oceanside Place co-hosted some excellent box lacrosse, which eventually saw the Zone 4 team (Fraser River–Delta) capture gold, and Zone 6 (the Island) win bronze. The Fraser Valley (Zone 3) led with 207 medals (79 gold, 72 silver, 56 bronze), with Vancouver Island coming in second with 183 (75 gold, 56 silver, 52 bronze). Over 3,200 volunteers helped the games run smoothly and local business contributed more than $900,000 in support.

The Quality Foods Parksville Royals had a tough time in their final six games, winning one out of four, with two games Saturday rained out. It was a surprising season, in a positive way, for the Royals who came in with a very young team that was looking to gain experience and improve as the season went along. Having achieved that along
the way, the Royals have something to look forward to for the seasons ahead. “I think that overall, we had a good season,” assistant Bruce Biro said. “Of course, we didn’t reach our goal of making the playoffs but we played a lot of good games, we played a lot of tough games and our guys showed that they could hang with any team at any point in the season a lot of the time.” With the majority of their roster be-
ing younger players, only five seniors, the chance to gain some experience with each passing game was huge as a team. Having an opportunity to see what it’s like this season and work towards taking that next step is something that was being looked at right from the start of the year. “We knew it would be tough, no doubt about it,” head coach Dave Wallace said. “Our roster was one of the youngest in
the league and it showed at times. But those kids played hard every game and they steadily improved through the season by leaps and bounds, so that was really positive to see that come about.” With the team not making the playoffs, the Royals will look to build on their win total from this season, which improved from 2013, and hopefully look to have much of the same roster back in the pinstripes for next season.

The locals put on a great show for the hometown fans and the rest of the card brought it as well for the Strawson Boxing and Gloved Up Promotions Fight Night July 18. Both Mark “Machine Gun” Woolnough and Aubrey “Bam Bam” Morrow were victorious in their bouts and “Shotgun” Shane Andreesen fought to a draw in his battle against Rob Nichols in a slugfest that saw Andreesen break his right pinky finger. Aubrey “Bam Bam” Morrow got the night started for the local talent with a TKO at the 1:09 mark of the third round against the number nine ranked Canadian middleweight Jonah Arbuckle. Morrow scored two knockdowns in the first two rounds and then finally put an end to thing knocking him to the canvas once more, as Arbuckle’s corner threw in the towel. Morrow picked up his victory after four years out of the ring, showing a little bit of rust in the opening moments, but he seemed to find his timing soon. Arbuckle looked out matched by the younger and stronger Morrow, who is now the seventh ranked middleweight in Canada with a 6–1–2 record including five knockouts. Shotgun had to change his game after the injury and it showed. Still finding his jab with his left hand, Andreesen left himself open more than he would have liked. The fighters spent the match trading punches, with both men getting the upper hand at different stages. In the end, the match was declared a draw as both left it all in the ring. The main event featured Mark “Machine Gun” Woolnough and Billy Bailey from Bakersfield, California. Bailey, a former WBC USNBC light heavyweight champion, was against a crowd firmly behind Woolnough, who was back in the ring for the first time in over two years. Woolnough controlled the fight from the opening bell, picking Bailey apart with pinpoint accuracy. Looking like he had fought recently, Woolnough dictated the match’s relentless pace, giving Bailey more than he could handle through all six rounds. Woolnough improves his record to 20–6–1. Langley’s Alisah McPhee defeated Peggy Maerz via split decision, Paul Mpendo, from Oregon, defeated Alabama’s Gundrick King and Brampton, Ontario’s Chris Aucoin picked up a unanimous win over Eddie Gates.

Viedas looking ahead

It was back to the octagon for Marco “Machete” Viedas at Battlefield Fight League 31 at the Hard Rock Casino in Coquitlam, July 12. Viedas was looking to add to his win total against Tylor Nicholson and things were looking good early on for the Parksville product. Machete came out the aggressor in the first round, taking the fight to Nicholson and wrestling him straight to the ground. “I found myself in a good position on the ground against him early on,” Viedas said. “I would have had no problem finishing him off if it were full MMA rules. So I just stayed on top, held him down and smothered him as much as I could, looking for a submission NEWS FILE PHOTO instead.” Marco “Machete” Viedas Viedas won the first round and looked to continue that trend in the second round. Nicholson went for a head kick and Viedas came in with a counter right hand after he avoided the head kick, nailing Nicholson square and putting him down on the mat. “We practice that one a lot,” Viedas said. “Anytime I have a kick coming at me like that, we practice on avoiding the contact and coming right up the middle with a right hand and I nailed him. Didn’t get the knockout like I wanted though.” With thirty seconds remaining in round two, Viedas and Nicholson scrambled and Viedas wound up with Nicholson on his back
