Steps toward upgrades and expansion have put the Harbour City on the verge of seeing a seamless waterfront walkway, according to the Nanaimo Port Authority. Nanaimo city council will decide next month whether it will ink a letter of intent with Nanaimo Yacht Club to share costs in a $1.25-million walkway expansion project. The upgrade will be the first time the waterfront promenade is enlarged, according to Bill Corsan, the city’s manager of real estate, who says until now the focus has been on building the walkway. The City of Nanaimo and the Nanaimo Port Authority have been working toward a seamless waterfront connector between the yacht club and B.C. Ferries, requiring additions and upgrades as property owners redevelop or renew their water lot leases. The Waterfront Suites and Marina has the pilings installed for its portion of the trail, while Nanaimo Shipyards is expected to add walkway as it develops its float-home community. Newcastle Marina Holdings Ltd. has not taken any redevelopment steps, but is reportedly open to creating an interim passage so the city can see an uninterrupted trail. “When the shipyard and Newcastle goes through that will basically be the last link,” said Mike Davidson, the port authority’s director of property and environment, adding he believes the two parcels could be done within five years. The new upgrade by the city and the yacht club is a requirement of the port authority before it grants the club a new 30-year lease and would start no sooner than 2017. It would expand the trail from three to seven metres and include improved lighting, handrails and an extended cycle path. Early estimates by Golder Associates peg costs for the yacht club at $579,000 and the city at $670,000. Corsan said it is unusual for the municipality to do walkway expansions, but in this case it has lease obligations. At the 2014 B.C. Summer Games in Nanaimo this weekend, gold medalwinning Olympian Simon Whitfield watched with eyes of wisdom. The Games, which ran July 17-20, saw more than 3,000 B.C. athletes in competition at venues across Nanaimo. Whitfield, who took a gold medal in triathlon at the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympics and a silver in Beijing 2008, knows the value of youth sport. Basketball, volleyball and soccer, as well as swimming and cycling, were among the sports he took part in growing up.
“I participated in all sports and then eventually found my way to triathlon and I think that versatility and athleticism served me well through the rest of my career,” Whitfield said. Not everyone can earn a medal and athletes at the B.C. Summer Games, and elsewhere, have to learn to deal with disappointment, he said. Whitfield had to persevere through many difficult situations. He followed up the gold medal in Sydney with an 11thplace finish at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece, before earning his silver medal in 2008. He said Athens was an incredible disappointment but he learned a lot from that. He pointed to adversity he endured at the Sydney Olympics as he rebounded from a crash during the cycling leg to take top spot. “I was involved in a pileup basically and rode my way back to the lead group and again, as a metaphor, I
ended up turning something negative into a positive because when I caught the lead group, I realized how great of shape I was in and how I was really ready to perform because I was the only person from the crash that was able to make it back up,” he said. Whitfield is a member of the B.C. Games’ board and gave the keynote speech at the opening ceremony in Nanaimo on Thursday. “It’s an incredible experience for young kids to be here, these young men and women to be at the B.C. Summer Games, to experience the Games to experience not only the stepping stone to other games but also just the challenge of this Games and taking it all in, the camaraderie and the experience,” he said. Water plant construction lags behind

Regional District of Nanaimo board directors are scheduled to vote on motions related to passenger rail service in Nanaimo at its regular meeting tonight (July 22). Directors will vote on whether to carry out a contribution agreement with the Island Corridor Foundation and whether to direct district staff to designate $68,000 of provincial 2014 Strategic Community Investment Fund grant money to the agreement, which would see the tax requisition lessened for 2015. The board agreed in 2012 to provide approximately $945,000 – two payments of $472,500 in 2013 and 2014 – to the foundation, based on $2 million in funding to be shared among four other regional districts on Vancouver Island. None of the money has been paid yet with the 2013 portion, which was requisitioned through taxes, sitting in reserve. The Nanaimo regional district voted to put off the 2014 contribution until 2015 during budget discussions because a passenger rail deal between the foundation, Southern Railway of B.C. and Via Rail had not been reached at the time. R e p re s e n t a t i v e s from Via, Southern Rail and the foundation confirmed that a deal is done and only needs ratification from their boards. While the Nanaimo re g i o n a l d i s t r i c t appears to be moving ahead, the money

Nanaimo’s new multi-million-dollar water treatment plant is still on budget, but there’s no guarantees it will stay that way with construction lagging almost five months behind schedule. The City of Nanaimo has released an update on the South Forks Water Treatment Plant, which has been under construction since last year. According to Bill Sims, the city’s manager of water resources, the project has drawn close to 40 per cent from its million-dollar contingency fund because of minor changes in design and is four to five months behind schedule. Longer construction periods often lead to increased costs, he said, adding that while the plant is anticipated to stay within budget, that can change with time. So far there have been $676,000 in overruns, which the city has offset with $289,000 in savings found in areas like equipment and landscaping. Sims said the project team has been very conscientious about the budget because of the size of the project and dollars involved. “Very early on in the project we put the entire team on notice that we had to hit our budget so that included looking for opportunities to save money,” he said. “We have a pretty modest contingency, at the same time the change orders to date [have been] below one per cent of the overall construction value, which is good. That’s excellent in fact.” The water treatment plant, considered state-of-the-art and one of the city’s costliest multi-year infrastructure projects, is halfway done. It’s being built as part of a $70-million filtration system needed to meet new Island Health guidelines which require the municipality to take more stringent measures before 2015 to prevent waterborne illness. Sims anticipates construction will wrap up in April or May of next year rather than this December as originally planned and will be operational by late summer, costing $830,000 for the half-year. Fire sends three to hospital Three people were treated at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in an upstairs suite of a house in downtown Nanaimo. The fire broke out Friday at about 10:30 a.m. in a house at 320 Hecate St., where five people were living in three suites. One resident had escaped from the top floor of the house, but firefighters found one woman in an upstairs window, unable to get out of the building because of heavy smoke. Firefighters helped the woman down a ladder to get her out of the house. An elderly

The three victims were taken to hospital. “The one lady had pretty heavy smoke inhalation, but they were released [Friday] from the hospital,” said Karen Lindsay, Nanaimo Emergency Services manager. One dog and five kittens were also rescued from the home unharmed. Two people were given temporary shelter through the city’s Community Assistance Program because of heavy damage to their suite. The other three residents were able to return to their suites. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

will not be doled out until certain conditions are met, such as a signed agreement with Via Rail and other regional districts must take part in funding, according to Paul Thorkelsson, Regional District of Nanaimo chief administrative officer. A copy of the agreement will need to be provided to Thorkelsson for board inspection as well. “No money will be released until the ICF goes through their tendering process [for infrastructure repairs], so they’re going to have to do their tendering process that will confirm the project and when t h e y ’ re p re p a re d to move for ward with construction, they’ll request the funds from the various parties including, I assume, the province and federal government, on the larger portion of the money,” Thorkelsson said. Graham Bruce, corridor foundation CEO, said the boards will ratify in the next four to five weeks but wouldn’t comment on specifics. Transit ridership shows increase Regional District of Nanaimo transit has seen more people taking the bus over the past year. According to B.C. Tr a n s i t ’s 2 0 1 3 - 1 4 annual report, the number of passenger trips in the region rose to 2,796,621 in 2013-14 from 2,657,328 the year previous, an increase of 5.3 per cent. Daniel Pearce, re g i o n a l d i s t r i c t transit operations manager, pointed to expanded service as the reason. Five thousand serv i c e h o u r s w e re implemented in March, according to Pearce. Services were enhanced to Vancouver Island University and Parksville and a
new route with service to Departure Bay ferry terminal. Nanaimo’s 5.3-per cent growth, however, was lowest in the group – Comox and Cowichan saw growth in the seven-per cent range. Pearce said ridership is strong in Nanaimo, he said. “I think it’s doing very well and I think the biggest trend is that we want to continue seeing increases each year and really trying to make sure that people understand those sustainable transportation options to make it easier for people to get around outside their vehicle,” said Pearce.

Scholarship win benefits community Two Nanaimo District Secondary School students are being helped toward their post secondary pursuits with cash from Coastal Community Credit Union. Chelsea Chase and Trevor Grewal each received $2,000 in credit union scholarship money for submitting plans for projects they’re passionate about that could help make a difference in their community. Chase got the nod to carry out her proposal for which the credit union provided a budget of $1,000 to fund each project plus a $500 scholarship bonus for completing the projects. Through family connections, Chase got in touch with Ralph Motzek, manager of the John
Howard Society’s Vancouver Island Therapeutic Community, a residential housing and substance abuse treatment program for men transitioning from the correctional system to independent living. Chase came up with an idea to build a covered patio for the residents to socialize and barbecue meals together. “And then we would get some picnic tables, paint those, and with the money that we saved overall, we could have a victory barbecue after,” Chase said. “We had quite a few men who were in the house itself who were helping. It was so awesome because we had a tin roof and all of the guys said they like the sound of the rain on a tin roof.”

One man is on a mission to clean up one of Nanaimo’s most popular recreation areas. Since May 22, Douglas Wortley, a 24-year-old Vancouver Island University geology student, has spent 20 days with a rake and shovel scraping up broken glass, dumped trash and spent shotgun shells from a patch of land known as Cadillac Flats, located in the Doumont recreation area. Wortley, an avid mountain biker, calls his one-man effort the Doumont Restoration Project. His tidying up has spread to nearby clearings and trails and he has also placed posters on trees to promote maintaining cleanliness in the area. So far, Wortley said, there has been no new dumping in the areas he has cleaned, but he could use as much volun-
teer help as he can muster. “I guess I’m, like, the project coordinator,” Wortley said. “It’s pretty much just me and I take on volunteers.” Wortley has had up to 14 people work with him, but is planning some larger cleanups, including one Aug. 24 with the Nanaimo Mountain Bike Club. “They want to have all their members come out, so that will be a huge turnout,” Wortley said. There have been multiple trash removal operations in the area organized by local clubs over the years, usually lasting a day or a weekend, but before long the area is quickly blighted with illegally dumped trash that includes garden waste and household garbage, construction materials and even abandoned vehicles. This is the first time someone has made a sustained cleaning effort, although Wortley’s original intent was to do a research project in the area that could tie in with his VIU studies. “After a while I realized there’s not a lot of research
to be done,” Wortley said. “There’s just a lot of trash to be picked up, so I kind of moved away from that and tried to get anybody who either hates garbage or loves nature to come on board.” Wortley has co-ordinated with user groups and said he also received a $500 donation to support his efforts from Island Timberlands. Bill McMillan, Nanaimo Mountain Bike Club spokesman, said Wortley’s project is the most thorough cleaning of the area he has seen. “He’s gone up there and actually raked up reams of shotgun shells,” McMillan said. “Doug has kind of hit the nail on the head with his theory that, if an outdoor area is cleaned up to look pristine then that first person tempted to dump stuff out their window or leave their trash there is going to find it a lot more difficult. Water reserve expected to last High summer temperatures have forced fire bans and water restrictions, but the City of Nanaimo says there are no worries about water shortages. Ritchie Fulla, Nanaimo water works general foreman, said when the snowpack in the mountains around the Jump Creek Reservoir came in lower than average over the winter and
early spring, the city started storing water earlier to build up reserves. The decision was also made to conserve water by not flushing out the city’s water distribution system. “With the weather this week being a bit hotter, we have used more water, but we’re average for this time of year on demand and we’re also just a
little below average for storage,” Fulla said. Fulla added that he doesn’t anticipate any water supply problems unless the Nanaimo region experiences a prolonged hot, dry spell extending into late September or October. “We’re keeping a good eye on it and hopefully we’ll be ahead of the curve,” Fulla said.

Before a fire in 1930, the Daily Free Press building on Church Street had a third storey. The third storey is back, plus rooftop patios, energyefficient windows, fibre optic communications, a completely new interior, high-end restaurant and street-level retail space, thanks to a $4.5-million restoration by Morgan Carey, president and CEO of Real Estate Webmasters, who has moved the company’s main offices to 223 Commercial St. “It’s about 14,000 square feet including the restaurant – the total footprint of the building – with all three floors,” Carey said. “But we had to keep our other two buildings [on Fourth Street and Terminal Avenue] because this took a year longer than we intended and we grew faster than the building.” The rebuild also cost $1.5 million over the original estimate, but the move brings 80 Real Estate Webmasters jobs downtown and the restaurant, yet to be formally named, alone will have a staff of about 30. The company’s current payroll is about $6 million annually. The renovation and fivestar restaurant is about attracting talent and clients from around the world to Nanaimo by creating the infrastructure to make

the Island. Carey said it can be a challenge getting staff to relocate here. “Once you get someone here, it’s easy to get them to stay,” Carey said. More people downtown equals more business, but restaurants and galleries and others will have to stay open longer hours to build economic momentum, he said. “We can be the chicken or the egg – that’s the advantage we have,” Carey. “We’re bringing the people, so it doesn’t matter if the businesses aren’t open, hopefully they’ll start to be open because of the density,” Carey said.
A former Nanaimo city councillor will lead the Nanaimo Port Authority board of directors for the next two years. Jeet Manhas, who has served as a board director since 2010, was elected as board chairman at a recent meeting, taking over for outgoing chairman Bob Bennie. He said his experience and relationships he made while serving on city council and with the Regional District of Nanaimo will be beneficial in his new role. Manhas said one of his priorities is expanding the dock at Duke Point. With the provincial government pushing the liquefied natural gas industry, he said Nanaimo is situated in a good location to take advantage of some of the related projects that will be coming in the next few years. “The major undertaking will be Duke Point; I want to tackle that. The container business is doing really well for us, which [has been] a newer business for the last couple of years, and it’s doing well and we need more dock facilities at Duke Point,” said Manhas “I have a very good relationship with the provincial government as well, so I want to really work hard to get some funding for that and work with a private partner, port authority, the provincial government and the federal government to make that reality for Duke Point for maybe a second dock,” he said. The new board chairman would also like to bolster cruise ship traffic in the Harbour City. He said some of the regulations have changed and some of the ships weren’t equipped for those changes and companies took those runs out of Canada and the U.S. “Now they’re changing their cruise ships so that they can run in Canadian and United States waters, so we’re hoping in the next little while, we’ll have a good announcement for having more visits for our cruise ship terminal,” he said. Director Richard Ringma was elected as vice-chairman and Manhas is hoping two vacant director positions will be filled by September. The federal government will announce the appointments, according to Manhas.

Summer Games stir city pride Months of planning and organizing came down to four days of passion and enthusiasm for thousands of athletes, coaches and volunteers at the B.C. Summer Games in Nanaimo this past weekend. By all accounts, it was a successful, well-organized Games of which Nanaimo’s organizing committee should be proud. The accommodations team found space for nearly 4,000 athletes and coaches to sleep in dozens of empty schools, while the transportation committee organized the province’s largest temporary fleet of buses to transport the teens and coaches to their events across the city. Security detail kept athletes, coaches and spectators safe, while parking attendants kept lanes clear for emergency personnel. Nearly 39,000 meals were prepared to feed hungry athletes to ensure they were well-nourished for competition in track and field, baseball, lacrosse, water sports and more – all overseen by another army of volunteers. Nanaimo stepped up to the plate in a big way this weekend – even those who just watched from the sidelines should be proud of the effort put in by their friends and neighbours. Any of those volunteers will probably tell you, that despite the heat on Friday and Saturday, the long nights of preparation and execution, and the stress of putting on a provincewide event, it was all worth it. It was worth it to see the happiness on the athletes faces as they raced for the finish line or sunk that last basket before the buzzer. Those volunteers provided a lifelong experience for the young athletes – one that Olympic great Simon Whitfield can attest will continue in their memories and possibly drive them to further greatness in the world of sport and beyond.

We can’t continue to dump garbage into the oceans, waterways and air or bury it in the ground and hope it will disappear. If we can’t find better ways to use or at least reduce waste products, we must stop producing them. In the meantime, this project must be halted. The Great Lakes are already threatened by pollution, agricultural runoff, invasive species, climate change and more. We can’t afford to add the risk of radioactive contamination to one of the world’s largest sources of fresh water.

City can’t seem to get dam decision right To the Editor,
Re: Dam remediation moves forward, July 17. The Colliery Dams Technical Committee’s objective is the development of an environmentally minimally invasive, cost- and timeeffective solution. Has this been accomplished? In my opinion, no. It was blatantly obvious at the July 14 city council meeting we are taking a trip down roads well-travelled with certain councillors blindly following senior staff’s recommendation towards the most invasive, most costly and most environmentally invasive option available. At the meeting an alternative option for overtopping was mentioned. Staff stated that they had heard from the company making the proposal what their
projected costs would be but in the same breath said nothing regarding the amount being put forward. Why? Will council now entertain this newer option or will those that have been pushing hard first to remove and now for the highest-cost remediation option again simply follow recommendations of senior staff?

Re: Dam remediation moves forward, July 17. As far as I know, no risk assessment associated with water overtopping the dams was ever made. The risk assessment that reduced the rating from ‘extreme’ to ‘very high’ analyzed the likelihood of a catastrophic failure of the
structure in the event of an extreme tectonic event. Another study would have to be done to provide us with some insight into the risks associated with an extreme inundation event. It is quite possible that once the analysis of risk is complete, then the hazard rating of the dams could be reduced again. It would be foolish to proceed with a remediation of the dams without an accurate understanding of the risks.

Re: Committee divided over dam options, July 15. Now that it has been proven that the Colliery dams will not collapse in an earthquake, unlike most of the rest of Nanaimo, city council is adamant that
millions must be spent to guard against a deluge of Biblical proportions. Their two options – dramatically deepening and widening the drainage canal or turning the dam into a concrete weir will both cost many millions. They refuse to utilize a much cheaper, proven option that would include matting the exposed surface of the lower dam at far less than half the price of the two promoted options. By law, council is bound by fiduciary responsibility to utilize proven, applicable methods in city projects at the cheapest possible price. Degrading the park environment while wasting millions of dollars proves certain councilors are unfit to sit on council.

American Mark Stuart knows a thing or two about life on the road. Since his professional music career
began in the 1980s, Stuart has played more than 2,000 shows throughout North America, E u ro p e a n d t h e United Kingdom. On Friday (July 25) Stuart will be performing in Nanaimo at Headliners School of Performing Arts.
Stuart was born in Nashville and became a professional musician at the age of 15. Nearly three decades ago, Stuart was the frontman for a roots band that toured heavily throughout the Southeastern region of the United States.

Renowned youth choir makes return to the Harbour City A highly regarded youth choir from the United Kingdom will be returning to Nanaimo. Over the years the Hampshire County Youth Choir became one of England’s leading youth choirs and have performed throughout the U.K., Canada, Italy, Monaco and Denmark. The choir performs at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, 100 Chapel St. on Aug. 2 at 7 p.m. Tickets for the event are $15 each and can be purchased by 250-753-2523, or at the door.

YOUR “NANAIMO MERCHANT FLEET” WELCOMES YOU Marine Marine Festival & “Great” International World Championship Bathtub Race Nanaimo harbour was the scene of a bathtub race extravaganza at the first race in 1967, which was Canada’s 100th Birthday. As the City of Nanaimo’s “Centennial Event” more than 200 tubbers in every type of watercraft imaginable entered the fun competition and amazingly, 47 completed the 36 mile course to Vancouver’s Fisherman’s Cove across the Straits of Georgia. Now the “Great RACE” finishes at Departure Bay beach in Nanaimo covering a very gruelling course that starts in Nanaimo Harbor, goes around Entrance Island, north west to Winchelsea Islands,

From the confusion of a first time bathtub race in 1967, the Nanaimo to Nanaimo “Great” INTERNATIONAL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BATHTUB RACE & 3 day Marine Festival has evolved. JAMES ARNOLD FOGLIETTA January 28, 1942 – July 5, 2014
The family is deeply saddened to announce that, after a 3 year battle with leukemia, Jim passed away at Nanaimo General Hospital at 6:30 am Saturday, July 5, 2014 with his wife Pauline at his side. He was 72 years of age. Jim was born and raised in Nanaimo. He met Pauline in Grade 8 and by Grade 9 they were a steady couple. They married in 1964 and had two children. As well as a genuine love for each other, they were best friends. They loved doing things together: skiing, golfing, fishing, traveling, going south in the winter, cooking, and entertaining in their home. Left to mourn his passing are his wife of 50 years, Pauline; daughter, Kelly Douglas; son, Jim (Naomi) Foglietta Jr.; brothers, Jack (Faye) Foglietta, Larry (Elaine) Foglietta and Brian McLaren. During Jim’s earlier years he was very active in team sports. Soccer was his favourite game but he also played quarterback for the Nanaimo Redmen Football Team, softball, rugby, and was a member of the Nanaimo Judo Club. Jim was an avid fisherman, duck hunter and active member of the Nanaimo Fish & Game Club. Jim was employed at Harmac’s No. 3 Woodroom during the 60’s when he decided to pursue a career in Industrial Relations. 1973 brought a job offer from Eurocan Pulp and Paper for a position in their Personnel Department and the family moved to Kitimat BC. In 1976, he joined Canadian Forest Products Howe Sound Pulp Division on the Sunshine Coast to become Manager of Human Resources. They remained living at Gibsons Landing after retirement, but in 2008 decided to return to Vancouver Island taking residence in Parksville, BC. to be nearer to family and long-time friends, many from as far back as the elementary school days. Jim will be missed by all who knew and loved him for his laughter and funny entertaining stories. A Celebration of Life will take place at 2:00 pm on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at Yates Funeral Chapel, 1000 Allsbrook Road, Parksville, BC, where he is interred. MIKE JIGGINS He was brave and bold and sharp as a tack. He was gentle and kind and loved a good laugh. Michael Frederick Jiggins was born September 9, 1933 and he died July 10, 2014 at the age of 80, surrounded by family. Mike was a King Scout in England at age 18 and soon became a certified Master Joiner. He married his best friend Joan on August 29, 1953 and the two sailed from England to Ellis Island, New York. They traveled by train to Montreal and then Calgary where they settled. Chris, Susan and Kim were born in that city and the family was joined by Mike’s parents Fred and Mabel from England. They moved to the Kootenays to purchase and operate the Skookum Inn in Windermere before moving the family to Victoria in 1960. The family expanded to include Angie and Pat. Mike worked with Cubbon’s and Doman’s before establishing his own venture, Shawnigan Building Supplies, with a store in Victoria and in Sooke. He became the President of the B.C. Building Supply Dealers Association and the President of Canadian Building Supply Dealers Association. The family moved to Parksville in 1972. There, Mike expanded the French Creek Resort, which they renamed Camelot. He later took over and greatly expanded Arranglen Lodge Long Term Care Facility in North Qualicum and became the President of the B.C. Association of Private Care. Mike was always interested in politics and became an area director at the Regional District of Nanaimo and was also the board chair. He designed and built Paradise Sea Side Resort in Parksville and also designed and built Arrowsmith Golf & Country Club in North Qualicum. Mike and Joan employed a few thousand people in the 60 years they have been in business, receiving many community awards and accolades along the way.
Every one of their five children, their spouses and many of their grandchildren have worked with Mike and Joan in realizing their dreams. Those dreams became their own and they have raised their own families in the midst of it, and the legacy of building families and building businesses has endured. Mike celebrated 60 years of marriage to the love of his life Joan last August 29. Mike will be missed dearly by his wife and children: Chris; Susan and her husband Joseph; Kim and his wife Kelly; Angie; Pat and his wife Trina. His many grandchildren, who he encouraged greatly and who he gave many handfuls of smarties over the years, will always cherish the time they had with Grandad. He will also be missed by many others who considered him to be their Dad or their Grandad. GG also had a plethora of great-grandchildren who he greatly cherished. Mike’s sparkling blue eyes lit up every time he greeted family at gatherings and his winning smile was contagious. His favourite film was Student Prince, his most treasured vocalist was Mario Lanza, and his hero, Winston Churchill. He loved war history books, British comedies, Hermann’s Dark Lager and he was very fond of all his dogs, including Lacy the Pom, which he leaves behind, as well as Magnolia the Jack Russell. He was an avid golfer and was also a world croquet champion, a title he took with his son Kim, in a sport he enjoyed with many family and friends. Our thanks and appreciation to the doctors and nurses of NRGH and RJH for all their care and attention in Mike’s last days.
A Celebration of Life is to be held at Arrowsmith Golf & Country Club on Friday, July 25 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please honour Mike’s memory with a donation to the B.C. Cancer Foundation.

Games over. The 2014 B.C. Summer Games in Nanaimo drew to a close after four days of competition and celebration of sport. Some will take away medals; all involved will take away memories. The Games officially ended Sunday afternoon with closing ceremonies at Rotary Bowl stadium. Mayor John Ruttan and B.C. Lt.-Gov. Judith Guichon extinguished the flame and Games president Jeff Lott presented the official flag to athletes from Penticton, the next host city. “The 2014 B.C. Summer Games may be over, but the spirit of the community, friendship and teamwork that inspired us all will never leave our hearts,” said Ruttan. He said the city’s efforts in hosting the event made him proud and he thanked the 2,945 volunteers. “They are Nanaimo’s ambassadors,” he said. “They welcomed thousands of visitors from all over the province and showed them true Nanaimo hospitality.” Tavin Grant, a lacrosse gold medallist from Burnaby, said it was a crazy good atmosphere around the city. “Everywhere you go, everyone you meet is just so happy to be here,” said Grant. “It’s such a great environment. Track club star takes triple gold O n e o f N a n a i m o ’s hometown medal hopefuls came through with triple gold on the track. Nanaimo Track and Field Club star Madison Heisterman won gold medals in the 800metre, the 1,200m and the 4x400m relay at the B.C. Summer Games this weekend. She’s a provincial record holder and is used to winning meets, but the B.C. Games in her hometown were something a little different. “It’s definitely more intense, and seeing the beautiful medals before, you look at it and [think], ‘Wow, I really hope I get one of those.’” She won the 1,200 in three minutes, 37.35 seconds, four and a half seconds ahead of Taryn O’Neill of Zone 2. Heisterman anchored the 4x400 relay team to a comfortable win in 4:07.59. Having already ran a couple of races, Heisterman’s legs were hurting. She ran, by her standards, a leisurely heat in the 800m to conserve energy and was a little unsure of how she would do in the final. “But you kind of get intense and ready and it’s the Summer Games, so you get pumped up,” she said. Her time of 2:14.49 was four and a half seconds better than the silver medallist, Megan Roxby of Zone 5, and it meant a third medal ceremony. “When you’re standing on the podium everyone’s cheering for you from your zone and it’s awesome,” Heisterman said. Volleyball finals see frenetic finishes Island teams medalled on the volleyball courts, though it was Fraser Valley that won double gold. The Zone 3 girls’ and boys’ indoor v-ball teams won gold-medal matches moments apart Sunday morning at the Dover Bay Secondary School gym. The valley girls won their final 25-11, 25-22 against Vancouver-Squamish. The second set was close and intense all the way through
to make for an exciting finish. “There were a lot of people watching and it’s a big game and you want the gold medal. That’s why there’s pressure…” said Morgan Hindy, Fraser Valley’s team captain. “A lot of teams crumble under that pressure but I think we held ourselves up really well and were able to play how we can.” She said her team had
positive, well-rounded players and good depth. They showed willingness to learn each others’ on-court tendencies and also bonded off the court, making the medal more special. “It just goes to show how hard we’ve worked and how we’ve come together,” Hindy said. “A lot of us didn’t know each other at all and I think it’s just a really great accomplishment to be able to come together as
a group of friends and succeed.” Vancouver Island’s girls came through with a bronze-medal victory over Thompson-Okanagan earlier Sunday morning. In boys’ action, Fraser Valley defeated Vancouver Island 25-12, 25-23 in the gold-medal match after a closely contested second set. Thompson-Okanagan took bronze. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

His coach crowed that he’s the pride of Nanaimo, B.C., and although Reid DellaRosa has some competition for that title, he was definitely a golden boy at the Games. Della-Rosa won five medals in swimming, including two golds. The Island team was in synch at the B.C. Summer Games. Local synchronized swimmers struck gold in the pool, with first-place results in both team and individual competition. Some of the big winners were the members of the Tier 4-5 team, including Nanaimo Diamonds members Jenna Krawchuk, Camrynn Myronuk, Hannah Proud and Maya Scott-Bradley of Nanaimo and Paige Wilson of Cedar, who swam with Parksville’s Julie Preston and emerged with gold. Scott-Bradley said her team was nervous leading up to the Games because it knew that the Fraser Valley entry had swimmers with national experience. “We trained really hard because we knew that they were going to be there, and we were trying really hard because they were really good,” she said. Scott-Bradley said her team tried to give something extra and managed to do just that, when it mattered. “We had our best run-through of the whole year…” she said. “So we were pretty proud of ourselves and it was a really nice moment when we got the scores.” Also winning gold at Beban Pool was Nanaimo’s Emily Duff, who was part of a Tier 2-3 team. Krawchuk won a silver medal in figures.

The Nanaimo Pirates completed a remarkable late-season rally and now they can talk about playoffs. The Hub City Paving Pirates won their last two regular-season games on the mainland yesterday, crushing the North Delta Blue Jays by scores of 13-5 and 16-6, and earned themselves a play-in game for the eighth and final playoff berth in the B.C. Premier Baseball League. “We’re a scary team right now,” said Doug Rogers, Pirates manager. “If we get in, I know whoever finishes first; they’re not going to want to play us.” Saturday’s blowouts were highlighted by grand slams from both Tristan Olsen and Josh Carless-Jones in the second game. Josh Burgmann was 3-for4 with three RBIs in that one and Shawn Arabsky also had three hits. North Rainey was the winning pitcher. In the early game, Robert Busch struck out nine in a complete-game win and Rainey, Chris Vlaj and Garrett Goodall had three hits apiece. The Pirates (20-28) play the Abbotsford Cardinals in a do-or-die game today (July 22) at 3 p.m. at Whalley. “I’d play in Siberia right now, with the luck that we’re having,” Rogers said.
T-men fall 9-6 in Duncan game The Nanaimo Timbermen still have a shot at the playoffs, but the road will be tougher after a loss at Duncan on the weekend. The T-men fell 9-6 to the New Westminster Salmonbellies on Saturday in Western Lacrosse Association action. Paul Brebber led the T-men with two goals, junior call-up Corey Shires had a goal and three assists and Hugh Weir, Brody Eastwood and Macgregor Johnston were other scorers for Nanaimo. The senior A Ti-men play their final home game of 2014 this Saturday (July 26) against the Burnaby Lakers at 7 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena.
