Heritage was in the air in Greenwood last Saturday as Canada’s Smallest City celebrated it’s 117th birthday with Founder’s Day 2014. At 9:30 a.m. the clock tower at the post office was rung 100 times to commemorate the fact the clockworks was built in 1914 by John Smith and Son Midland Clockworks of Derby, a company still in existence today according to Gordy Jones who looks after the clockworks for the city. There were people who came dressed in period costume. For those who felt underdressed, there was Miss Sophie’s Old Time Photo booth where you could get into costume and have a Victorian or Old West photo printed on the spot. Kim Kinakin walked around with a noose around his neck playing the part of Leonard from the Phoenix graveyard. He explained, “One hundred years ago I was caught stealing somebody’s gold and they convicted me. I was hung for my punishment plus I had to come back once a year for eternity and do community service on Founder’s Day. The only gold I am allowed to have now is Greenwood Gold water.” The Greenwood Board of Trade took the lead in organizing the day this year. They were backed by many, many volunteers who came forward to represent other organizations. Heather Smith organized the parade again this year. It was led by the Legion flag bearers and the pipers from Grand Forks Pipes and Drum. Following was everything from the fire engine to horses to ATVs. Lifeguards from the Greenwood pool had fun cooling those along the parade route down with squirt guns; and of course the Red Hat Ladies were there again. The air was filled with candy for the kids too, as many on the floats and vehicles threw goodies to the crowd. The opening ceremonies at noon included brief words from Mayor Nipper Kettle and Board of Trade President Jim Nathorst. The guest of honour at the opening ceremony was Rock Creek resident Margaret Eek—a descendant of Edward Christensen who, in 1896, was the first baby born in Greenwood. Edward was killed at Vimy Ridge and his Memorial Cross is on display at the Greenwood Museum. • See GREENWOOD’S BIRTHDAY page 7

Photo search underway “This is our history and if we want it told right we need to preserve the information for future generations,” says Kettle River Museum Director Stephanie Boltz. The museum, located on Hwy 3 frontage in Midway, is looking for photographs for their image archive. Specifically they are hoping to locate pictures of the water flumes and orchards that were once a part of the Rock Creek and Kettle Valley agricultural scene. Also wanted are train pictures—either old photographs or more recent ones. They say a picture is worth a thousand words and Boltz said they would like to have family pictures in their collection that could enrich the story of the local area. She said these photographs could be either given to the museum or loaned for copying purposes. “Our history will be lost if we don’t archive it,” Boltz said. “There is so much history that still needs to recorded, the people who opened up this country and their families, the events and industry, the ranching, mining, logging, law enforcement, train history, the Dewdney Trail, Burns Meats, Customs, mineral claims, teachers, industry, and local government, to name but a few. People talk about these things if someone is interested; however, our children don’t talk much anymore. They look at a screen, they text—who will be left to tell them what it was like when they finally want to know? “The museum will be the caretaker of the history for the Kettle River Valley, the Boundary. We have only a few people left who can tell us about our history and interpret the pictures, we need to archive that information.” Boltz said the museum is also looking for volunteers who would like to come in once a week or a few times a month to greet visitors and give

There’s something every day What a whirlwind this new adventure has been! As some of you MIDWAY may know, I have recently taken over the director’s position at the library and have been enjoying every minute of it! From meeting new people to seeing old friends, this is the life! We have lots of fun things happening in the coming weeks so I hope to see more of you soon. Our children’s programs have started and everyone is having fun so far. There is something going on every day that we are open so if your kids or grandkids are looking for something to do, bring them on in! We’ve recently started an Adopt a Book program here and I hope it will be a great success. The way it works is we have a display at the library that lets our patrons know the books we are wishing for and they choose the book they want to “adopt”, they then donate the cost of it or purchase the book and donate it to the li-

brary. A label will be placed inside the book saying who donated it. You can adopt a book for yourself, for a family member or anyone that you can think of. July 19 marks the fifth anniversary of the JLB Memorial River Run/Walk. I’m looking forward to being a part of it this year and am amazed at the support from the community and local businesses. As you may know, the JLB Run raises money for locals undergoing cancer treatment as well as raising money to support the library. This is a fantastic event and I hope to see everyone out there! Registration and pledge forms are available at the library and on our website midway.bclibrary.ca. Have fun but be safe too With summer in full swing, the lakes, rivers and recreation areas in the Boundary are really popular. The tragic deaths of the local man who dove into the Kettle River, and the motorcycle crash in Revelstoke, are two recent reminders of how dangerous recreating can be. These are just two very recent examples of two Grand Forks’ men whose lives ended far too soon. Please be careful, folks, when you are out on the rivers and lakes. Be aware of your surroundings. Don’t take unnecessary chances. If you’re in a boat or even a canoe or kayak, make sure you’re wearing a life jacket and have proper licensing. For those out in the woods on motorbikes or ATVs, be cautious of your surroundings as well. Other people, whether they are hikers, bikers or truckers, may not see or hear you coming until it’s too late. And please don’t drink and drive—no matter what kind of vehicle you’re operating. Focus on the task at hand; put the cell phone away. Summer is a great time to enjoy our wonderful surroundings with our loved ones. Let’s make this summer memorable for the right reasons. Be smart.
