Alberni bids for U-18 hockey championship in 2016 KATYA SLEPIAN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
Interest in women’s hockey has waned in the Alberni Valley since Aaron Vissia’s was chair of Alberni Valley Minor Hockey Association (AVMHA) but he hopes that hosting the U-18 Female National Hockey Championship in 2016 will
change that. Port Alberni would be one of five cities on Vancouver Island to host U-18 games if its bid is successful, he said. Parksville would be the main host with Port Alberni, Cowichan Valley, Nanaimo, Comox Valley and Campbell River serving as satellite locations.
Of the five female teams that used to compete here, only one recreational team is left. “The interest just isn’t there for female teams anymore,” says Meranda Vallee, president of the AVMHA. “It’s a phenomenon the whole island is seeing and hopefully that [will help].” Vissia and Vallee presented the bid to city
council on Monday night for the championship to be held at the AV Multiplex in November 2016. The bid to hold the championship will cost $1,000, half of which will be provided by AVMHA members with the rest to be provided by the city. Port Alberni will see at least two out of the 18 games held here and
Vallee and Vissia are hoping to have the bronze and gold medal games held here as well. The city previously hosted the 2009 U-17 World Hockey Challenge which proved to be a huge success for the community. While this championship will be a smaller event than the World Hockey Challenge,
Vallee and Vissia are confident that it will still be an economic boost for the city with many families coming in to watch the games as well as getting Port Alberni some T.V. exposure. “It is a Hockey Night in Canada event, it is a national event so it’s huge,” says Vallee. reporter@albernivalleynews.com
Menninga to run for council SUSAN QUINN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
Malcolm Menninga is the latest to announce his intention to run for city council in the November municipal election. Menninga has created a Facebook page, Malcolm for Port Alberni Council, and says he supports policies “that will grow the population and reduce our taxes. “As a councillor, my goals are to promote and enhance the image of Port Alberni as a place to live, work and play,” he stated on his Facebook page. “This is the key to our prosperity.” Menninga is the second person in the past couple of weeks to say they will be running for a council seat. Charles Thomas has also declared his intent. The election isn’t until Nov. 15. Official nominations open 46 days before the election and close 36 days before (Sept. 30–Oct. 10). No one’s fallen off of Centennial Pier just yet but the Port Alberni Fire Department wants to be prepared for the eventuality. The pier was originally built two years ago to protect the ships in Fisherman’s Harbour from strong winds coming in
from the Alberni Inlet. As a consequence, it’s now the south side of the pier that takes the brunt of the waves created by the wind. If the wind is bad enough, anyone who falls into the water on that side is going to have a tough time getting out. The climb up is steep, which means the rescue is steep too. “If you’re in there trying

to swim, I don’t think you’d last very long,” says Fire Chief Tim Pley. “You’d get tired pretty fast and get forced under.” Realizing this, the Port Alberni Fire Department got to work developing a way to get people out of the water without risking a firefighter’s life in the process. “In water rescue you want to be able to throw
something to somebody or reach out and pull them as opposed to going in the water,” says deputy chief Chris Jancowski. “The cargo net is an idea that Chris took from the ship industry; it’s not unusual to see that kind of technique in a search and rescuue situation so we just applied it here,” adds Pley.

Port Alberni’s transit system is set to undergo major changes in an attempt to boost revenue and ridership, which have both been down in recent years. BC Transit regional transit manager Johann van Schaik presented the Port Alberni Fare Structure Review to council on Monday and discussed several options to simplify the fare structure.The lack of service on holidays was also addressed. Bus fares in Port Alberni haven’t been increased since 2003
and average fare costs —and thus revenue— lag behind similarly sized communities in B.C. by an average of 26 cents, he said. According to Coun. Jack McLeman, the best way to reduce that fare gap without hurting ridership further is to consolidate the regular and discount cash fares into one $2 fare, as a 2012 BC Transit study showed that six per cent of riders already pay that amount instead of counting $1.75 for an adult fare or $1.50 for a discount one. The increase would bring the city’s average single use
fare to the same level as the $1.98 average in similarly sized communities. In addition to consolidating the cash fare to a single $2 product, council also voted to combine senior and student monthly passes to a single $25 pass while leaving the regular monthly pass at $48. Council also agreed to reduce the 20-pack tickets to a 10-pack and voted to drop the price down to $15.75. Council also voted to improve the lack of holiday service by implementing Sunday levels of service on stat holidays starting on Labour Day.

The Huu-ay-aht First Nation has offered to buy the former Canada Post Office building on Argyle Street, chief councillor Jeff Cook said. More than 80 per cent of Huuay-aht citizens live off reserve so an administration building in Port Alberni makes sense, executive director James Edwards said. Cook announced the development at the tribe’s press conference about its LNG project on July 9. “We’ve accepted an offer for the former post office the week of July 1,” Edwards said. “But we have to do our due diligence yet and look at the
environmental issues, electrical, mechanical and building code.” If accepted, the Huu-ay-aht plan to use the 4,495-square foot building as an administration base for its head office and a daycare, Edwards said. “We just added 10 new staff so we’ve outgrown our present location on lower Third Avenue,” he said. The tribe has a new administration building in Huu-ay-aht. But according to the Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, the tribe has a population of 684 people as of June 2014, 132 – 20 per cent—of which live on reserve. More than 80 per cent of Huu-ay-aht citizens live off
reserve, 40 per cent of whom live in Port Alberni. Huu-ay-aht people make their homes in Port Alberni to be closer to work and education opportunities, as well as to take advantage of infrastructure, Cook said. The new building is uptown, centrally located and is on a transit route so it made it an attractive location. “It’s where our people are,” Edwards said. Tribal officials looked at other locations but didn’t find them suitable, he said. Residents need to be made aware of hazards at Canal Beach if they are going to go swimming there. City council hopeful Denis Sauve spoke to council about the subject at city’s July 14 meeting. Signs should be erected at the beach warning swimmers that there is no lifeguard on duty, and that there is still industrial refuse on the floor under the water, Denis Sauve said. Sauve again enouraged council to adopt a flexible schedule for the bylaw officer to work during the summer months. A flexible schedule shouldn’t impact the bylaw officer’s budget, he said.
Water reservoir work to start
The tender for construction of the Bainbridge Lake Water Treatment Plant has been awarded. Windley Contracting Ltd. was awarded the $3.4 million contract. The company had the lowest bid out of the seven companies who competed for the contract, city engineer Guy Cicon said. The company Westpro Infrastructure submitted the highest bid at $3.9 million. The work will be underwritten with funds from the city’s water reserve account as well as with loan monies. The plant upgrade is necessitated by more stringent water quality requirements imposed by the Vancouver Island Health Authority.

A new authorization process will usher in secondary suites in the Alberni Valley. Councillors instructed city staff to implement recognition of secondary suites through a new process. Presently, owners of exisiting suites need to dismantle them and have them inspected by city staff for electrical and building code requirements. Now, suites can be authorized if inspectors determine that work meets building code standards. If not, a notice will be placed on the title of the property.

the bottom of the memorial. The memorial was created by Tseshaht artist Connie Watts and was underwritten with a grant and money from the Tseshaht First Nation. The piece is circular with a roof and has a central pole with sub-poles supporting a winged roof meant to collect and channel away tears. The poles are adorned with steel child figures and the cement base has children’s handprints on the surface. AIRS opened in 1891. It burned down twice: in 1917 and 1937, and was rebuilt in 1920 and 1939. The school

Crews demolished what was left of a burned out commercial building on Argyle Stree and Second Avenue last weekend. The building was gutted by fire and rendered uninhabitable in February.
Police are on the lookout for whoever vandalized a memorial commemorating Alberni Indian Residential School survivors. The incident occurred on June 27 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., RCMP Cpl. Scott MacLeod said. Calls to the Tseshaht First Nation weren’t returned by deadline. One of the figures depicting a child was torn from its base, and some of the other figures were scratched. Dirt was strewn around
closed in 1973. Federal policy required that aboriginal children attend residential schools for 10 months out of the year. The vandalism shocked Huu-ay-aht First Nation member Benson Nookmis, 79, who attended AIRS from 1932-1947. “You’re kidding me – someone actually did that? That’s terrible,” Nookmis said. Nookmis said he wasn’t initially aware that a memorial had been created. “But I’m honoured to know that someone did something like that for us,” he said. The vandalism is senseless and
resonates more so in survivors, Nookmis said. “I guess it’s because we experienced an awful thing.” The vandals might have had a change of heart if they read information on the memorial first. “If they read the plaque they’d have known what it was there for,” Nookmis said. “It’s too bad that people have to do things like this.” Police are asking anyone who knows anything about the incident to call the Alberni RCMP detachment at 250-723-2424, or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477. reporter@albernivalleynews.com Twitter.com/AlberniNews

Fire season has arrived early in the Alberni Valley, Port Alberni Fire Chief Tim Pley said. The Provincial Wildfire Branch is banning all open burning all areas of the Coastal Fire Centre, a release said. “We’ve been talking to the Provincial Wildfire Branch and they say they are seeing conditions now that we don’t normally see until August,” Pley told city councillors on July 14. “Fire fuels are really dry right now so they’re gearing up for fire season.” The provincial fire hazard rating is listed as high and not extremely high. Port Alberni and the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District have struck a deal for the city to provide water to Beaver Creek. The fruits of that agreement were evident on Tuesday with the official opening of a new pump station on Strick Road. “The city and regional district have entered into an agreement for the

supply of bulk water,” ACRD chair and city councillor Cindy Solda said. “The agreement provides for
additional revenues to be invested in the city’s waterworks and sustainable costs to the Beaver Creek water service area with increased treatment and a plan to satisfy the Island Health requirements.” The pump station pumps city water into the Beaver Creek Water System. Its opening is the culmination of $1.55 million in gas tax monies spent on infrastructure works for Beaver Creek. This
includes the addition of a new Kitsuksis Reservoir and an upgraded watermain on Strick Road. Alberni-Pacific Rim MLA Scott Fraser praised the communities for working together to solve Beaver Creek’s water issues. “Having the (old) improvement district work so closely with the regional district and city is impressive,” he said, drinking some water.

Susan Roth’s smile was tangible through the phone lines when she learned Beaver Creek and the City of Port Alberni signed a
bulk water agreement. “It’s really good,” said Roth, who fought since 1999 for clean drinking water in Beaver Creek. Lobbied so hard, in fact, that her research and joint complaint
with fellow resident Diana Sparks to the B.C. ombudsman were integral to the formation of the province’s 4-32-1 drinking water strategy. “Obviously we don’t

have to face any more boil water advisories as long as the city’s water remains good. It’s pretty nice to not have to worry about your water so much.” In 2008 the ombudsman’s decision came down; in 2010 Roth was still protesting that changes to the water system in Beaver
Creek had not been made despite the decision. In 2012, when the Beaver Creek Improvement District was finally converted to a local service area of the AlberniClayoquot Regional District following a referendum the previous fall, Roth was finally able to let go.
“I don’t think about it anymore because I don’t worry when I turn my tap on anymore,” she said. Ultimately, Roth would like to see a regional water plan implemented so everyone in the Alberni Valley has access to clean, safe drinking water.

But the city follows the province’s lead when it comes to burn bans. “We do that to maintain consistency and because of the fact that they are the experts on outdoor
fires,” Pley said. Pley said one issue being planned for now is if the province pulls its firefighting assets from the Alberni Valley to assist with other fires. “This happens in some years and when it does government looks at municipal fire service resources,” he said. “We could be called into action to respond to a wildfire or support fighting one.”

regional director John McNabb said this is a turning point for Beaver Creek’s water system, and it brings them closer to compliance with the province’s 4-32-1 safe drinking water program. He acknowledged there will be growing pains along the way.
“There’s a lot of ownership when you’ve got miles and miles of infrastructure you’re dealing with,” he said. “We’re going to have to be flexible, we’re going to have to be realistic...and we’re going to have to be futuristic.” Providing water to Beaver Creek
represents about 10 per cent of the city’s water supply, municipal engineer Guy Cicon said. “Our watershed catchment and supply system is sufficient to handle the additional approximately 1,000 customers. “I think there’s the capacity to handle
Cherry Creek as well,” he said. The investment in the Beaver Creek water system is part of the ACRD’s 2013 Regional Water Improvement Project, a commitment of $2.2 million in gas tax funds to critical infrastructure upgrades to its community water systems. Other approved ACRD projects include interconnection of the Millstream Water System with the District of Ucluelet for an emergency backup supply; well development and water effluent treatment for the Long Beach Airport Water System, to proceed in the fall of 2014 (this system provides for the airport as well as the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation); distribution and treatment improvements for the Bamfield Water System; upgrades to Cherry Creek watermains; and a commitment of $264,000 if a water supply system is established for the Bell Road Stuart Avenue neighbourhood at Sproat Lake. The use of gas tax monies to help pay for these projects has eased the financial burden on local residents, ACRD chief administrative officer Russell Dyson said. editor@albernivalleynews.com

We can share medal moments The Games are good to go. A lot of hard work and planning has been done for the B.C. Summer Games in Nanaimo and there is still more to do, but many can simply sit back and watch. We hope that people do just that – get out and fill the stands this week (July 17-20) and cheer on the youths as they go for gold. With 19 different sports at 27 different venues, there are bound to be events that interest us. One of the characteristics of the B.C. Games is the variety and scope. This event isn’t just a soccer tournament, it’s not just a track meet, it’s both those things and more. The Games present a different kind of fan experience. There will be sports this week that we don’t often see contested in Nanaimo – competitive beach volleyball, river kayaking, inline hockey, triathlon and wrestling, to name a few. The youths will notice and appreciate the claps and cheers and the hooting and hollering. Part of the appeal of qualifying for the B.C. Summer Games is the chance to try to achieve on a grand stage. It’s a big deal for them to make it this far and it will be a big deal for them to medal. These athletes win a lot of games and titles and collect a lot of ribbons, medals and trophies. We want the B.C. Summer Games in Nanaimo to be more than just another tournament. We want these youths to have an awesome experience and make memories at these Games in our city. Hundreds of medals will be handed out and there will be hundreds of opportunities to see great games, unexpected outcomes, fierce competition, victory, defeat, sportsmanship, goldmedal moments. boss Mark Blucher made the case for an increase of nearly 5% on basic insurance last fall. One reason why claims for bodily injury, pain and suffering, future care and loss of earnings are going up is that more people are hiring lawyers. Another reason is distraction, not just from mobile devices but also more pedestrians and cyclists in urban areas. Are drivers getting worse? A recent report out of Saskatchewan suggests they are. In 2013, only 48% of new drivers in Saskatchewan passed their road test. The test hasn’t changed much in the past decade, and there are more immigrants who aren’t accustomed to highway driving, North America style. But a veteran driving instructor calls today’s new drivers “the weakest generation I’ve ever taught,” after they spent their formative passenger years watching TV or playing with game machines and other screens while on the road.

When our kids visit sometimes we drive back to Port Alberni where my husband worked at Somass in the 1960s, and I worked weekends at Woodwards. Around noon on July 8 our son took a picture of Eric J. Dunn school and then Maquinna where he and his siblings went to school, and then of our old home on 10th Avenue. The present owners came out and insisted I come in and see the changes. The kitchen sink was no longer in a bar in the middle of the floor but under the window. LOL. It was so beautiful. My pictures of their beautiful landscaped backyard didn’t turn out. The hospitality shown by complete strangers was so overwhelming. We have moved to many pulp mill places and never have we returned to a former home and were so pleased. Port Alberni, you look good.

Deli’s closure is city’s loss To the Editor,
We are very sorry to see that Alberni Deli’icious deli on Third Avenue has been closed. Proprietor Wendy Telford served up excellent homemade style breakfasts and lunches there, for 15 years—good wholesome food at lower prices than one might expect. Despite having regular customers, the profit margin became too thin and Wendy had no choice except to close up. This business will be missed by all the “regulars”. Sell the beauty not the stench To the Editor,
While it is nice to see new people jump into the electoral race, it’s not good enough. . What we need is a slate of like minded candidates, working as a team, for the prosperity of Port Alberni. Let’s face it the mayor and the council have been publicly squabbling like children and the city suffers:
entrenched nonproductive programs and subsidies remain. Assessments go up, taxes go up and all they can think of is to threaten to close our effective, efficient and greatly needed fire department. Look around: with just a little more effort, the business development office can have all of downtown Third Avenue closed and abandoned. Where there is a real opportunity is in senior retirement and the service industry it requires, we have the cheapest property and one of the best climates for it in B.C. It would need enthusiastic effort. The city would need to build first-class medical clinics and offer them to doctors at little or no cost, plus housing, to get doctors here. We could take some of the old, burn scarred buildings in the downtown, offer them to developers for the taxes in return for new buildings, with commercial at ground level and condos above. Let’s sell our valley to the world, not as a smelly mill town, full of unemployed. But as a human and natural resource rich

Prof clarifies Aboriginal title Just some clarifications regarding Tom Fletcher’s column, Life after the Tsilhqot’in decision (B.C. Views, July 2). 1. Federal and provincial authority may vary with the strength of an aboriginal title claim, as Fletcher contends, in the sense that the obligation to consult and accommodate is proportional to the strength of the claim. But this is not so once aboriginal title has been proved in court Once such title is established it is no longer a matter of a “claim” and the aboriginal owners must consent to any development proposal respecting their land—unless the government supporting such a development meets the stringent constitutional test for limiting aboriginal rights and title in the absence of consent. 2. A finding of aboriginal title does not necessarily “lock in” communal ownership.
Just as treaty First Nations may agree to convert land to fee simple title, aboriginal title holders may agree to surrender land to the federal Crown on the condition that it be re-conveyed to them for the purpose of conversion to fee simple. I suspect that obtaining such agreement is no easier in the former scenario that the latter, but it may be. 3. The Tsilhqot’in had a long history of keeping others out, and were the only First Nation that was hostile even to the fur trade. But they did not fight a war in the 1860s to defend their territory from a “wave of gold seekers.” They expelled everyone. In 1864, after being threatened by the foreman of a crew building a wagon road through their territory —he had warned darkly of bringing back the small pox that had killed at least one third of their population two years earlier—they killed nearly all the crew and then killed or expelled all white settlers from their territory. Last year, when I visited the Monaco Grand Prix as a guest of the Infiniti-Red Bull F1 race team, I chatted to Infiniti engineers who marvelled at the pace of improvement. Said one Infiniti engineer: “They do things so much more quickly than we can do under normal development processes because they have to. And the changes they make are so thoroughly tested on the track. It points two ways: sometimes what they do shows us the way to go but also the way not to go!” Hong Kong-based Infiniti has made a very shrewd move in tying itself to the F1 team and particularly the reigning F1 champion Sebastian Vettel. The German racer is the marque’s Director of Performance. His association goes far beyond the typical celebrity endorsement, for he takes on a literal hands-on-thewheel approach to his role. Last year, I drove with Vettel on the Paul Ricard circuit in the south of France. He talked enthusiastically about how he hoped to influence future Infiniti design and performance. At trackside, Infiniti personnel were impressed with his ability to tell them what changes they needed to make to its

race with 35 percent less fuel, with a maximum fuel load of 100kg (not litres) and the fuel flow is restricted to 100 kg/hour. Roderick James Dyck February 13, 1955 – June 28, 2014
Rod was born in Quesnel, BC on Feb 13th 1955, to Walter and Val Dyck. Rod was blessed with a sister, Janet. From a very early age and throughout his life Rod loved and excelled at sports, including hockey, baseball, golf and curling. He felt at home in the outdoors which led to much time spent camping, fishing, snowmobiling with family and friends. As a young man Rod left Quesnel to play junior hockey with the Vancouver Villas. His junior career continued with the Kamloops Chiefs, Penticton Broncos, Vernon Vikings, and the Medicine Hat Tigers. He then played for the Quesnel Kangaroos until leaving for South Africa in the summer of 1976 to play hockey there. While in South Africa, Rod was recruited to Morges, Switzerland, where he played for two seasons from 1976 -1978. It was in Switzerland that Rod met Patricia who shared his life for the next few years and remained his life-long friend. Rod returned to Europe in 1979 to play with EV Ravensburg Germany, performing as a player/coach in the latter years, until he returned to Canada for good in 1984. In 1990 Rod moved to Vancouver Island where he eventually called his beloved Bamfield home. Here he started a construction company and a building supply store. Rod was a skilled and talented carpenter, often generously sharing his wealth of knowledge. One does not have to look very far in Bamfield to see Rod’s hand. Here Rod met his partner, Kelley Bartlett and in 1996 they welcomed their daughter Erin into their lives’. The last 20 years of Rod’s life revolved around life with Kelley and Erin in Bamfield. Here he found purpose and joy in raising his daughter, and peace and tranquility in the beauty of the ocean and the rainforest. In later years he also found serenity on the golf course. Rod lived his life with humour, honesty and integrity. He was a practical, insightful man who was quietly effective in so many ways. He was strong and courageous, almost seeming invincible at times – a role model to all who knew him well. Rod was predeceased by his parents Walter and Valerie Dyck and is survived by his partner Kelley, daughter Erin, sister Janet (Jules), nephews Waylon (Brooke) and Kayle as well as great nieces Jersey and Presley. A celebration of life will be held for Rod at his residence in Coombs on July 20, 2014, at 1:30pm. Quality Foods’ newest store opens in Victoria LANGFORD, BC After about a year and a half of planning and preparation, Vancouver Island owned grocers Quality Foods opened their doors July 10 to what they are calling their ‘new store in WestShore’ at 977 Langford Parkway in Victoria. Store manager Jordan Schley welcomed his new customers amid
camera flashes and a six-foot custom cake. “We are very excited to open the first QF in the Greater Victoria area, and we hope you enjoy everything the new store has to offer.” Langford’s Mayor Stewart Young was on hand with support from several council and chamber of commerce dignitaries for remarks to the anxious crowd, and
help cut the ribbon to mark the official opening. Young spoke about how he and council were very supportive of what’s been happening in Langford in recent years in the way of attracting business and creating jobs. “About a hundred new jobs have been created here at Quality Foods for residents of the area. What a great
asset for the area, and what a great asset for our residents,” he commented. The new store increases the total number of employed among all 12 QF stores—including Port Alberni’s Quality Foods on 10th Avenue—to just under 1,000 full and part time people. Quality Foods co-founder Ken Schley introduced the store
personnel as a group, many of them local people starting new careers with Quality Foods. “Everyone worked hard to get us to this day,” he added later. The location was completely transformed from a former furniture retail store. “The infrastructure needed for a food store required us to strip it right down to the bare concrete

Port Alberni is sending nearly two dozen athletes, officials and supervisors to the BC Summer Games, taking place July 17–20, 2014 in
Nanaimo. Wrestling athletes and officials dominate the participants’ list. Former athletes Mike Cappus, Cole Doskotch, Cody McEvay, Jesse Wagner and Jordan Wagner have all signed on as officials for the
Games, along with Alana Bodnar. Head coach Jeanette Badovinac and assistant coach Chris Bodnar will accompany athletes Johannes Kulich, Michel Kurucz, Dean Leyland, Emma McGowan, Remi Wells,
Nolan Badovinac, Aaron Badovinac and Lauren Barker. Athletes in other disciplines competing for Port Alberni include Connor Sabiston, Oliver Speagle (800m) and Jonah Wynans (hammer throw)
in athletics, Selena Howard in canoe/ kayak with Allison Howard as adult supervisor, and Alan Charlesworth in boys’ softball. Athletes from Ucluelet also heading to the Games include Alvin Mati (boys’ 3x3
basketball official), Emma Irwin (wrestling official), Mayben Crabbe (wrestling) and Heather Morrison (wrestling). There are no athletes on the participants’ list from Tofino this year. All represent Zone 6 Vancouver Island-

Indigenous Games start Proteau wins fourth MidAmateur golf championship RICHMOND– Christina Proteau of Port Alberni won the British Columbia Golf Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship with a commanding 16-stroke advantage over the next competitor last week at Kamloops Golf and Country Club. She also finished tied for fifth in the BC Golf Women’s Amateur championship, won by Taylor Kim. At just over four months pregnant, Proteau claimed the Jackie Little Trophy for the fourth time in six years, the most wins anyone has had in the Mid-Amateur Championship since it’s inauguration in 2006.

“I’m really happy with the way that I played the last few days and really enjoy this part of the tournament. It’s kind of like the ‘Working
Women’s Amateur’,” laughed Proteau. She focused on keeping a good tempo and keeping her golf as stress-free as possible.
Proteau said she’s thrilled with a fourth Mid-Amateur title and happy with the way she’s been playing. She was two strokes behind Kim after the first round of the women’s amateur, before finishing tied for fifth. Port Alberni’s Proteau also won the Zone Team Championship with teammate Shelly Stouffer on Wednesay. Stouffer finished second in the Mid-Amateur Championship with an 11-over 230 after she shot her best score of the tournament so far, a one-over-par 74. Sandra Tubide and Eileen Kelly finished T3 with 234.

Exhibit captures Valley’s beauty from two sides MELISSA MARTIN Arts Around
Our current art exhibit is a colourful showcase of photographs by Cara Baldwin and Kristi Dobson. This joint exhibit captures Port Alberni’s natural and manmade beauty, which comes to life in an eclectic display of images of the valley’s surroundings. Baldwin and Dobson have spent the last few years taking an in-depth look at what surrounded them throughout their childhood in the hopes of inspiring others to re-examine the potential that lies within us all. Oil odyssey up next at Rollin “A Glimpse into the Magical Odyssey of Oil Painting” is the title of our next art exhibit at the Rollin Art Centre’s Gallery, featuring local artist Vi McConnell. This exhibit will showcase McConnell’s original oil paintings beginning Aug. 5 and running until Sept. 13.

Events are heating up for the second annual Art Rave, an 11-day celebration of arts in the Alberni Valley. Things kick off July 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the train station on Argyle Street with a display of artist Ron Hamilton’s Nuu-chah-nulth dance curtains. Aug. 2–4 Art Rave takes place along Argyle Street between the train station and Harbour Quay. Admission is free. Volunteers are needed for the main weekend of Art Rave, Aug. 2–4. Anyone wishing to help out is asked to call Linda Whiteman at 250-723-7158.
