The Regional District of Nanaimo vowed to stand beside the City of Parksville in their race against the clock for grant money. “We are joint venture partners and we are working together,” said Mike Donnelly, RDN water services manager. Donnelly said the RDN is hoping grant money for a new water system will come through in time to hold a referendum concurrent with the upcoming municipal election on Nov. 15, 2014, which would reduce the cost of an otherwise expensive referendum. “It’s a process issue,” said Donnelly. “Referendums cost a fair amount of money so in local government if you can hold a referendum at the same time as an election you aren’t spending money twice.” The RDN’s electoral area of Nanoose Bay — with the City of Parksville — are being forced to build a new water system after an Island Health decree that all groundwater must be treated. Donnelly said the preliminary estimates for the Englishman River Water Service project are around $37 million, split between Nanoose Bay (26 per cent) and Parksville (76 per cent). A news release issued by the City of Parksville confirmed city council sent letters to federal and provincial ministries outlining their “difficult situation and the need for senior government funding.” The letter was sent to Terry Lake, B.C. Minister of Health, Premier Christy Clark, Minister Todd Stone, Minister Coralee Oakes, MLA Michelle Stilwell, Rona Ambrose, Minister of Health for Canada, Prime Minister Stephen Harper and MP James Lunney. Donnelly said the RDN will stand beside and support the city. “We are with them (Parksville) on this,” he said. “We are working together.” See PROJECT NEEDS TO BE DONE, page A4

New Quality Foods opens in Langford
After a year and a half of work, the Parksville Qualicum Beach area based Quality Foods opened their ‘new store in WestShore’ at 977 Langford Parkway. “We are very excited to open the first QF in the Greater Victoria area, and we hope you enjoy everything the new store has to offer,” said manager Jordan Schley as he welcomed customers amid camera flashes and a six-foot custom cake. Langford Mayor Stewart Young was on hand with several council and Chamber of Commerce dignitaries to cut the ribbon. “About a hundred new jobs have been created here at Quality Foods for residents of the area,” he said. “What a great asset for the area, and what a great asset for our residents.” Co-founder Ken Schley introduced the staff and said, “Everyone worked hard to get us to this day.” The 12 QF stores now employ almost 1,000 people. — Submitted by Quality Foods

Arrowsmith Search and Rescue and Oceanside RCMP were joined by police dog services and search and rescue organizations from all over the Island last weekend to find 70-year-old Iain Hollier. “He’s had dementia for four years and he had apparantly wandered off in March in Sydney and was found 12 km away, so we had no sense of direction,” said ASR search manager Ken Neden. His wife reported Hollier missing the morning of Thursday, July 10 after he failed to return from his nightly walk the night before. That night about 30 ASR members began to search from his home in the 600 block of Alder
Street and searched all night without luck. The next day they were joined by searchers from up and down the Island, and about 70 people searched all day Friday and into Saturday until a resident on Bennet Road found him disoriented but otherwise okay in a remote back corner of their property. “Surprisingly he was not in bad shape, he was not sunburned, he was not even dehydrated,” Neden said. He pointed out that the man’s wife took a pamphlet for the Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation’s Project Lifesaver, in which people with dementia wear radio transmitters that notify police when they wander too far. Neden said the year old program would have made it easy for them to track and find the man within hours, if not minutes. Donnelly said the referendum question will be for Parksville residents and properties in the Nanoose Bay water service peninsula. “The question will be about borrowing,” he said. “It will be something along the lines of: ‘Are you in favour of borrowing X amount of dollars for the construction of a new water system.’” The Parksville and District Chamber of Commerce also sent letters to the federal and provincial governments ex-

With complications from the provincial teacher’s strike, a reduced version of summer school wrapped up this week in District 69. The district usually runs three programs during the summer: academic remedial, for high school students who didn’t pass a required class; full credit courses, for students who want to catch up or get ahead in their regular course work; and distributed learning programs for students completing courses on their own, superintendent Rollie Koop explained. After the BC Teachers’ Federation
(BCTF) announced they would picket summer school, the Labour Relations Board (LRB) ruled summer school an essential service for students who couldn’t otherwise re-take a course to meet grad requirements. “The ruling did not provide any meaningful relief in terms of teacher involvement in summer programs,” said Koop. “This places our district in a very difficult position when it comes to summer program offerings.” The district chose to only offer the academic remedial classes, taught by district staff, principals and vice principals. “Our option is not under the LRB
ruling because we’re not using teachers,” he said. About 30 students in grades 10-12 from across the district studied with six to eight district staff at Ballenas Secondary to meet their basic academic requirements, until July 11. Unlike the four week full credit course and distributed learning which can run through the summer, the academic remedial program usually only runs for a week and a half in July when things are still fresh in student’s minds, Koop said. Koop said students are limited to a single course due to time constraints.

Donnelly said the population is growing on Vancouver Island. “People keep coming here and we can’t stop them so we have to do two things: prepare for those people coming to Vancouver Island and manage a water resource for the people who are already here,” he said. “We have another summer of 30 degree weather and people need water and they need to realize it doesn’t come out of thin air — I think people get that we just have to make sure we get the project done in an affordable way.”

n what has become an annual tradition in Qualicum Beach, locals and visitors alike came out to enjoy Beach Day on Sunday July, 13. The day kicked off with a pancake breakfast hosted by the Shriners; later about a dozen tents were set up along the shoreline which saw face painting for kids, a marine touch tank from VIU, clowns making balloon animals and lots more. The main stage was set up for Qualicum Beach’s Got Talent live music competition where entertainment was provided for the rest of the afternoon.

Kicking seniors
N
o councillor, mayor or municipal staff member wants to be part of a group that stuck it to the Legion. Or the curling club. Or the lawn bowling club. Or any non-profit community organization, for that matter. What makes matters worse in this part of the world is the fact these clubs are generally packed with senior citizens. Yeah, that’s what you want to be known for, financially kicking some old people. Parksville city council and staff have creeped closer to being labelled with that mean-spirited moniker. Unlike most every municipality on the Island, Parksville wants organizations like the Legion to pay at least half of the property taxes they would owe if it was a private business. This can amount to tens of thousands of dollars for each organization, an amount that would have a ripple effect on the quality of life for thousands in Parksville Qualicum Beach. We understand the financial crunch facing municipalities. Over the past decades, senior levels of government have continuously downloaded responsibilities to cities and towns. Much of that slack has been picked up by non-profit organizations like the Society of Organized Services and yes, the Legion. The answer to the city’s financial woes, however, is not to stick it to those who have been picking up the slack. This is not creative problem solving. Frankly, it’s akin to picking the low-hanging fruit, and we have come to expect more from Parksville’s top administrators. Yes, it’s the elected members of council who make the final decision on these matters, but we are talking about part-time people who rely on well-paid city executives to give them options. Taxing the Legion or the lawn bowling club or curling club should not be an option. It’s time for Mayor Chris Burger or some other councillors (at least four in total) to send this whole notion back to staff for a re-work. If every home and business in Parksville paid $20 more in property taxes a year (a notion you would rarely see suggested in this space), perhaps that adds up to the same amount the city is seeking from these groups. Perhaps that’s too simplistic. Regardless, City of Parksville, back off the non-profits. — Editorial by John Harding

PRIDE OF HISTORY I would like to thank all the people who have volunteered to keep both the Dashwood Volunteer Fire Department and the Qualicum Beach Historical Society going and growing for the last 30 years. My father Howard Braden and a friend of his, Bill Parker, along with a few others, started the block building in Dashwoood, ordered a few fire trucks (including a pumper truck from Red Deer, AB), managed to round up a few volunteers and the DVFD was born. My mother, Betts Braden, along with some of associates: Elizabeth Little and Jim Story (both honoured Freemen of Qualicum Beach), Cora and her husband Art Skipsey (the mayor of Qualicum Beach at that time), Dorothy and Harry Large, Isla White, Graham Beard, Ray Ducker as well as many others, started the Qualicum Beach Historical Society at roughly the same time. and was totally unsatisfied. Unless you have a broken bone or you are bleeding profusely, you are on a three-hour waiting list for one over-worked doctor. The nurses or the admin staff are equally overworked and try their best to keep patients at ease by reassuring a doctor will be with you soon, but when care is needed, soon is never soon enough, especially after three hours. I have witnessed parents walking away after waiting as long as I have, three hours, with children who have fallen and possible concussion, possible broken rib, high fever, and parents being very upset when told to go to the hospital either in Nanaimo or Port Alberni after being there for three hours, desperate for help for their child. So then, my question is, what constitutes a medical emergency, where do they draw the line and who determines and are they trained to decide on the spot if someone is going to go into a seizure because of high fever, or to determine the severity of the fall and concussion to have this child wait three hours to be examined? I’ve watched an elderly man come in, he chopped off his finger, blood all over his wrapping, he was there for over two hours waiting for the doctor to help him. We left before he was treated, so we never saw how long he actually had to wait. My point is now, how was this not determined as a broken bone or bleeding profusely emergency that needed immediate attention? There is a considerable amount of new development in the Oceanside area, growing population, young and retired families, and we are in need of better health services. I thought the idea of this medical center was not to eliminate the walk-in services we had, but to better serve the taxpaying community with better health care?

‘Let the games begin’ was my immediate thought on seeing Neil Horner’s letter to the editor in the July 1 edition of The NEWS. I don’t know if he was trying to follow in his late father’s footsteps as a prolific writer for the naysayers in Qualicum Beach, or if his well-known left-leaning tendencies were showing now that the elections are coming closer. Maybe before he wrote he should have had a peek at the editorial for the day on the gradual demise of most everything in Qualicum Beach. Horner writes about Coun. Dave Willie and his pals at Pheasant Glen. I would be more worried about the new ‘Gang of Four’ possibility after the election — if Teunis Westbroek/Scott Tanner/Barry Avis/Neil Horner get in, the downward skid would really accelerate with the no-to-everything gang in control. Citizens of Qualicum Beach: beware. Mine is truly an outside perspective of no special interest, other than seeing the town get back on its feet and be a bright, bubbling place that all the people can enjoy. The Long Weekend ‘an absolute must-see’ All-star cast delivers quality performances leaving audiences wishing the weekend stretched a little longer REVIEW BY CANDACE WU news@pqbnews.com
The Long Weekend will have you laughing out loud. The Bard to Broadway production captures everything about dysfunctional relationships — both in terms of childhood friendships and marriage. While it is mostly about breaking up, infidelity and friendships plagued with jealousy and judgment, the script is witty, laughable and remarkably relateable for anybody who’s been in a relationship after the "honeymoon phase" has long ended. Canadian playwright Norm Foster's take on disposable marriages and lackluster relationships paired with longtime Qualicum Beach director Eileen Butts' flawless theatrical style makes this play an absolute must-see. Foster's script is full of twists, ridiculous antics and amusing one-liners. Even the last scene throws you for a loop. But don't worry, no spoilers here — you'll have to see it for yourself. The Long Weekend reflects classic Broadway-style theatre containing just enough sexual innuendoes, ludicrous conversation and outrageous plots twists to keep the audience laughing throughout the entire evening. Relationship therapist Wynn (Rosalee Sullivan) and lawyer Max Trueman (Jay Norton) host their friends, clothing store owner Abby (Jody Tkach) and math-teacher-turned-screenwriter Roger Nash (Doug Fisher), at their "quaint" five-bedroom country retreat. You know the type — predictably decorated in Ikea's most common designer living room set, complete with coasters and table books not really meant for reading nestled somewhere in Ontario's cottage country. The two women are longtime girlfriends meaning they have lots of baggage and plenty of issues that have been quietly swept under the rug over the years. However, the weekend brings out some deep-seeded animosity—like Wynn's insecurity that Abby is always judging her style and Abby's insecurity that Wynn is always dissecting her relationship. The weekend doesn't go exactly as planned and before

It’s frustrating, but past long-term performance has proven to have virtually no correlation to future performance.”
Still it’s a popular strategy to use past performance as an emotional button when promoting mutual funds. But as hopeful investors flock to the successful funds, cash levels grow, often at the most inopportune times: when markets are high. This forces the fund manager to make a choice: buy high, or sit on cash and wait for opportunities. Waiting can be costly though, as market timing frequently backfires, not to mention the fact that idle cash in a mutual fund is still subject to fees.
It is no secret that mutual funds are having a tough go of it lately, as a growing number of commentators, advisors, and investors look for alternatives. Exchange-traded funds, for example, have grown in popularity in recent years with their promise of near market-matching returns. Indeed the Wealthy Barber makes a case for these in his 2011 book The Wealthy Barber Returns. But ironically proponents of exchange-traded funds often still use past performance to make their case. It can be a compelling case, depending of course on which numbers you look at. According to Morningstar, over a 10 year period only 14 Canadian mutual funds have outperformed the iShares S&P/TSX 60 Index Fund (symbol XIU). However, let’s look at what has happened since 2011 -- a period during which the Canadian stock market has averaged only 4.36% (based on 3-year returns to November 30, 2013). By having the flexibility to underweight the weaker sectors, the number of Canadian equity funds that have bested the XIU has grown from 14 to over 200, with 57 of these actually doubling the XIU.

Artists fill Nanoose Bay garden LISSA ALEXANDER

Over 60 artisans will be selling their wares at the fifth annual Art in the Garden in Nanoose Bay July 19 and 20. The popular event is held on a 10-acre property that winds around a trout pond. This year there are 20 new artists attending including glass artist Robert Held. Held previously had a glass studio in Kitsilano and now has a new studio in Parksville. His work includes both classic and contemporary pieces like vases, bowls and hearts. Held has received many prestigious awards for his glasswork; his goblets were selected to adorn the table at an event with the Governor General, and Queen Elizabeth II’s collection holds a commissioned piece by Held called The Northern Lights which is a glass bowl created with gold and
dichroic glass. There will be cookies, cupcakes, muffins, hot dogs and cold and hot beverages available at the event. There is limited parking inside the property which is reserved for those with mobility issues. There will also be live music at the event including the youth group Jangano Marimba on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. Entry is by donation and proceeds benefit the Nanoose Food Bank. To date the event has raised $10,700 for that cause. Art in the Garden takes place at 2525 Northwest Bay Road from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. There is no shortage of remarkable artistic talent at the Friday Night Artisan Market in Qualicum Beach. The six-year-old event has local artisans lining the parking space beside The Old School House Art Centre and also filling the inside space with their wares. The market happens every Friday evening from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m and there is live music outside, with local musician Fred Saliani as music director. Refreshing local women’s wardrobes Family has been running clothing store for three years and says Parksville has been very welcoming LISSA ALEXANDER

Joan Classen and her daughters don't have the exact same taste in fashion, and they kept that in mind when opening Refresh Clothing in Parksville three years ago. "We wanted to offer a place where moms, grandmas and daughters could all come together and have fun in an open and relaxed atmopsphere,” said Rebecca Classen, the youngest daughter in the Classen family. "And my mother who is 81 also shops here," said her mother Joan. Joan and her daughters Katie Cooke and Rebecca Classen all made the move from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to Parksville three years ago because they wanted a change. Joan and her husband Dale had brought their youngest daughter Rebecca to Parksville on vacations for five years and decided it was the place they wanted to retire. Meanwhile Katie was studying the business of fashion from her employers at a Saskatoon clothing store. Joan pitched the idea of opening their own store in Parksville and Katie jumped on board. The third sister, Jan, went to school for fashion design and currently lives in Vancouver working in that field. She helps out with purchasing at the store, Joan said. Refresh carries a mix of Canadian,
American and European ladies clothing, everything from a $35 T-shirt to a $300 Jospeh Ribkoff dress. Refresh is not only suited to all ages but to all sizes, and carries sizes 0 to 16. The store also sells shoes and jewelry made by a Saskatchewan designer who was successful with her pitch on the Dragon's Den. This summer the trend at the store has been all about hues of orange along with denim jackets, leggings and tunics. Although the store follows current trends, that's not what they're all about, Katie said, as they let their customers help direct their purchases. "Just because Maxi skirts are in doesn't mean everyone wants to wear a maxi skirt," she said. "It's about feeling good in your clothes." Katie said she loves working with her mother and sister and most of the time they complete each other’s sentences. The women who come into the store are wonderful people and they have developed some meaningful relationships with them, Joan said. "They hug us and cry with us and they bring us flowers, they are just amazing people," she said. "Parksville has been very welcoming to us," added Katie. Most irrigation controllers are programed once and never touched again all season. The problem with that is the water requirements are not the same for May as they are for July. Most controllers will allow you to seasonally adjust your station run times simply by changing your percentage of run time. So if you set your controller for 10min and adjust your season percentage to 80% it will run for 8 minutes. This is a good first step but requires the owner or contractor to adjust two to three times a season. Smart Controllers do it for you automatically. The contractor or owner sets the program for the hotter months which are often July and August. And the controller’s outdoor sensor monitors the temperature and automatically changes the run time to suit the current conditions. These controllers save on average 30% per year on water usage. The Hunter solar sync smart control module can be added to most existing Hunter controllers. Smart control works so well that in 2010 the state of California mandated all new irrigation systems be installed with it.

When mobility is restricted by weakness in your legs or back, a loss of balance or frequent dizziness, getting around your home can be easier said than done. The same goes for moving around outside, what with all those icy driveways, uneven sidewalks and a lack of things to grab onto when you need to stop and catch your breath. Other safety measures include removing furniture that can get in your way, and wherever possible, opt for heavy furniture that can support your weight should you suddenly need to lean against it for support. For example, a heavy chair by your bed can help you get up in the morning.

About two years ago, while my wife was driving our car, she said to me “hmphy, shlrtle gobin fwumiic?” As usual I replied with my standard response to her mumbling,”Yes dear”. She wheeled a quick right onto a freeway on a very confusing and busy interchange. By the time we got off, turned around and found the address of the party we were heading for we were 30 minutes late for dinner. When I asked her why she did it she said “Well I asked you if I should take the freeway entrance and you said, Yes dear”. Shortly after the freeway incident, I heard about the experience of a man who said he was convinced that his wife was losing her hearing, so one day he decided to run a little test. While his wife was at the kitchen sink with her back to him he stepped into the kitchen and called her name in a normal tone, no response, he stepped closer and repeated the process, no response. Finally, he stepped directly behind her and called her name again, she turned and said “What are you doing? I’ve answered you twice. What do you want?” The man went to a hearing specialist the next day.

We are seeing some interesting changes in the way people are making purchases. First let me say, warranties are a good thing. They can be useful to hold companies accountable for the products they sell and install. Unfortunately, much of industry has realized that people will purchase an inferior product as long as it has a piece of paper that says “Warranty” on it. What I mean by this is that consumers may let their guard down when a product is accompanied by an impressive looking warranty, thinking the warranty proves it’s a good product. A warranty is only as good as the company that writes the warranty, and even then a large reputable company can close down leaving consumers with no warranty. How can you protect yourself when you are investing in windows and doors? Well, make sure you are purchasing good quality windows and doors and not a warranty. Sounds simple, but how do you ensure quality? I encourage people to do their homework. Learn how a window is made. Investigate the Low E types and qualities to ensure that yours are actually suited to our West Coast climate. Look at the grades of vinyl, number of air chambers, number and type of gaskets. Look at the hardware. Are there a lot of plastic components that could fail in the future? Off-shore hardware can be substandard and subject to obsolescence, again shortening the life of your window. A company’s track record and longevity can be another protection. How long a company has been in business and its reputation in your community should be considered when a long warranty is offered. Brochures will tell you that their product is the best and provide enough data and numbers to make your head spin, but in the end, most of what you need to know can be seen with your eye and discerned with some thoughtful research. The Parksville Tai Chi club has about 50 members and last week they celebrated their first anniversary with lunch and a cake at St. Edmund’s Church. The club meets three days a week at St. Edmund’s and also on Sundays at 9 a.m. in Parksville Community Park. They usually get about 25 members out to each class. Founder Eva Grodt says after they pay their expenses, the club donates all proceeds from membership fees back to community organizations. Abreast of Life is Parksville Qualicum Beach’s breast cancer survivor boat with members from Bowser to Nanaimo. The corresponding photo is from the survivor banquet on Friday July 4 where the theme was Superheroes with the “Super Survivor” heroine assigned to the seven survivor boats at the festival. The local team had a stellar showing at the festival, winning a silver medal in the Breast Cancer Challenge and a bronze in the women’s “gold” division, a category open to the seventy-three teams in attendance of all age groups and mixed men and women’s teams. The first Parksville Museum Farmers’ Market went off without a hitch. President of the Parksville and District Heritage Society, Peter Kawerau said organizers were really chuffed with the results. Fresh produce from Nanoose Edibles, local sausages from Whole Hog Farms, breads, chutneys and vinegars from Fabulous Focaccia, Eva and Reg’s Dahlias and Rawkolates which is handmade raw vegan organic, fair trade dark cacao bars and squares. Live music set the mood as visitors perused the local goods as well as the museum buildings and artifacts on-site. Every Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The sun was shining all day for Qualicum Beach locals and visitors who came out to enjoy Beach Day on Sunday July, 13. The day kicked off with a pancake breakfast hosted by the Shriners and later about a dozen tents were set up along the shoreline which saw face painting for kids, a marine touch tank from Vancouver Island University, clowns making balloon animals and lots more. The main stage was set up for Qualicum Beach’s Got Talent live music competition where afternoon entertainment was provided. The second annual Crabfest was hosted last Saturday in Nanoose Bay at Northwest Bay Ranch where people from all over the Island enjoyed a feast of fresh crab, beef, lamb and tuna along with local craft beer and wine. The sun was shining for the jam packed event which featured music by The Centaurs, crafts for kids and hayrides around the ranch. The fourth annual Sunset Cinema, put on by the Coastal Community Credit Union was held in Parksville Community Park Friday night with a screening of the current big screen hit, The Lego Movie, playing on the giant inflatable outdoor screen. Families enjoyed watching a movie on a beautiful evening in one of the region’s premier parks. Done to support Coastal Community’s Young Entrepreneur Program, an educational program designed to help students explore the world of business.

Central Vancouver Island’s Abreast of Life Dragon Boat team took a bronze medal in the women’s gold division and a silver medal in the Breast Cancer Challenge at the 12th annual Save-On Foods Dragon Boat festival on the July 4th weekend.

Charlotte Bernice Brooks February 14, 1928 – July 3, 2014
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother Charlotte, after a one year battle with cancer. She was predeceased by her husband, Read. Charlotte is survived by son, Bill (Sophie); daughters, Beverly (Dietmar), and Dyann (Dan). She is also survived by her grandchildren Jennel (Graeme), Ehren (Lisa), Lisa (Blair), and Aidan; as well as great grandchildren Mason, Kai, Finlay, Ava, Mya, and Charlotte. A Celebration of Life will be held in Charlotte’s honour at 2:00 pm on Friday, July 18th at Yates Funeral Chapel, 1000 Allsbrook Road in Parksville. PALMER , MARY LEILA
Born November 3rd 1932 in the province of Saskatchewan. Passed away at Eagle Park Lodge Qualicum B.C June 26th 2014. Predeseased by sister (Norma) and brother (Wayne). She is survived by her long time and loving partner Tom Lewis. Daughter Deborah Nugent, Pam (Bill) Fenner, son Terry (Lisa) Nugent, ten grand children and three great grand children. Although Saskatchewan born, her early life was in the Yukon. Later she moved to Vancouver where she worked on various careers. After moving to Vancouver Island while employed at Arrow Smith Lodge she met her partner Tom and together they spent the next twenty three years enjoying life. Lee as she was called by one and all loved travel, people, shopping around the clock and life in general. She enjoyed having family and friends over for a party and she would cook up a storm of food for all. She was a twenty five year member and a past president of BR #49 Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxilary, and was a huge supporter of Canadian Vets and Cadets. Her family meant everything to her and she just loved all her grand and great grand children equally as each and everyone of them was so special to her. In her honour there will be a Celebration of Life at the Royal Canadian Legion, 146 Hirst Ave. Parksville, Saturday July 19th 12:30- 2:30 pm. No flowers by request If one wishes a donation to the R.C.L. Poppy Fund BR #49 would be Lee’s wish.

Muriel Avoin Baxter (nee Reynolds)
July 7, 1921 – June 7, 2014 Muriel Avoin Baxter of Parksville, BC passed away peacefully June 7, 2014 one month shy of her 93rd birthday. She was predeceased by her husband, Ron by only ten weeks. Muriel was also predeceased by brothers, Vivian and Lyle; sisters, Nora (Currie) and Evelyn (Epp). She is survived by step children, Rick Baxter and Shelley (Ray) Baxter; two grand children; one great grandson; as well as her nieces and nephews. Muriel was born in Leslie Saskatchewan on July 7, 1921 to John and Annie Reynolds. She worked for many years in Saskatoon and Regina before moving to Newton, BC to open a hair salon. Roderick James Dyck February 13, 1955 – June 28, 2014
Rod was born in Quesnel, BC on Feb 13th 1955, to Walter and Val Dyck. Rod was blessed with a sister, Janet. From a very early age and throughout his life Rod loved and excelled at sports, including hockey, baseball, golf and curling. He felt at home in the outdoors which led to much time spent camping, fishing, snowmobiling with family and friends. As a young man Rod left Quesnel to play junior hockey with the Vancouver Villas. His junior career continued with the Kamloops Chiefs, Penticton Broncos, Vernon Vikings, and the Medicine Hat Tigers. He then played for the Quesnel Kangaroos until leaving for South Africa in the summer of 1976 to play hockey there. While in South Africa, Rod was recruited to Morges, Switzerland, where he played for two seasons from 1976 -1978. It was in Switzerland that Rod met Patricia who shared his life for the next few years and remained his life-long friend. Rod returned to Europe in 1979 to play with EV Ravensburg Germany, performing as a player/coach in the latter years, until he returned to Canada for good in 1984. In 1990 Rod moved to Vancouver Island where he eventually called his beloved Bamfield home. Here he started a construction company and a building supply store. Rod was a skilled and talented carpenter, often generously sharing his wealth of knowledge. One does not have to look very far in Bamfield to see Rod’s hand. Here Rod met his partner, Kelley Bartlett and in 1996 they welcomed their daughter Erin into their lives’. The last 20 years of Rod’s life revolved around life with Kelley and Erin in Bamfield. Here he found purpose and joy in raising his daughter, and peace and tranquility in the beauty of the ocean and the rainforest. In later years he also found serenity on the golf course. Rod lived his life with humour, honesty and integrity. He was a practical, insightful man who was quietly effective in so many ways. He was strong and courageous, almost seeming invincible at times – a role model to all who knew him well. Rod was predeceased by his parents Walter and Valerie Dyck and is survived by his partner Kelley, daughter Erin, sister Janet (Jules), nephews Waylon (Brooke) and Kayle as well as great nieces Jersey and Presley. A celebration of life will be held for Rod at his residence in Coombs on July 20, 2014, at 1:30pm. Ronald Arthur Baxter August 4, 1925 – March 28, 2014
Ronald Arthur Baxter, 88 of Parksville, BC passed away March 28, 2014 from lung cancer. Born in 1925 in New Westminster, British Columbia, he was the youngest son of the late Edwin and Florence (Nunn) Baxter. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Muriel (Reynolds); loving son Rick and daughter Shelley; two grandsons and one great grandson. His wife Muriel passed away just 10 weeks later. He was predeceased by both of his parents; his first wife, Marie; son, Scott; and brothers, Ted (Mary), Fred (Jean) and Jack (Dorothy). Ron served in the Canadian Navy in World War II. He earned his degree from the University of British Columbia upon returning from the war. After retiring from his successful land surveying business in New Westminster, Ron and Muriel moved to Parksville and enjoyed lawn bowling, travelling and spending the winter months near Palm Springs California. Summer months would find Ron fly fishing at the mouth of the Englishman River or casting from his float tube on one of the many lakes on Vancouver Island. April 8, 1935 – July 3, 2014 Ingrid passed away quietly at Arrowsmith Lodge in Parksville, BC. Predeceased by her brother, Gordon, she is survived by husband of 59 years, Thomas: sister, Ann Scott of Calgary; daughter, Maureen of Calgary; son, Wesley of Port Alberni; grandson, Richard and granddaughter, Jessica both of Port Alberni; grandson Shane and granddaughter Sherri both of Chilliwack; and 6 great grandsons. Ingrid was an accomplished horsewoman, who always rode a good one. A founding member of the CGRA (Canadian Girls Rodeo Association) and the CGBRA (Canadian Girls Barrel Racing Association) in Canada, she was instrumental in getting Barrel Racing acknowledged by the Pro Rodeo circuit, and for forging a competitive liaison with the Pro Rodeo Association in the USA. A barrel racer for years, and later a steer roper, Ingrid was always competitive and honest. There will be no funeral service by request. The family extends special thanks to the staff at Arrowsmith Lodge for care and attention Ingrid received during her stay with them and to Yates Funeral Services. GOODLAD, Janet Creighton (nee Goodman) September 25, 1934 – June 10, 2014
Passed away peacefully at home in Parksville during the early hours of June 10, 2014 following a period of declining health. She is survived by her sister Pat McLeod, Qualicum Beach, cousins Helen Hendry, Windsor Nova Scotia and Bill Caulfeild-Browne and wife Judy, Tobermory, Ontario and the Gilgan family, including Dan Gilgan, Roger’s nephew. Jan is predeceased by her parents James and Marjorie, husband Roger, aunt Laleah and uncles Alan and Norman Creighton. Jan was born in Sweetsburg, Que. The family moved to Halifax (where Pat was born), London Ontario and Montreal. Following graduation, Montreal West High School in 1952, Jan enrolled at McGill University. She was an exchange student at UBC in her 3rd year. In 1956 Jan graduated as a biologist, returned to the west coast and joined the International Pacific Salmon Fisheries Commission. Along the way, she met the love of her life, Roger. In the early 70’s Roger took a position with the provincial government and they moved to Prince George B.C. Roger passed in 1978. Later Jan relocated to Windsor, Nova Scotia to care for her mother and uncle Norman. Jan was an interesting, intelligent and analytical person with an inquiring mind. She was handy with power tools and at a potter’s wheel. Like her dad, she enjoyed photography and had a marvellous eye for composition, especially spider webs (her favourite), and close-ups of flowers, trees, fences and doorways. Lasting friendships were made and remained for 60+ years, especially ‘les girls’ high school, university and work friends. She took her role as big sister seriously and was very protective. She will be greatly missed by family and friends. A very special thank-you to Elder Life Advocacy & In Home Care’s, Anne Duggan and co-workers for their care and compassion. In keeping with Jan’s interest in the environment, donations in her name to The Canadian Wildlife Federation, 350 Michael Cowland Drive, Kanata, On K2M 2W1 or Nature Conservancy of Canada, 400-36 Eglinton Ave W, Toronto On M4R 9Z9 or to the scholarship being set up at University of Northern B.C. Prince George in Jans name would be appreciated. Jan’s ashes will be interned with Roger at the Fraser Lake Cemetery. A weekend split for the Quality Foods Parksville Royals was well earned, as they battled the heat on the field along with the Langley Blaze, the best team in the BCPBL. In the battle between first place and last, there wasn’t much separating the teams at Inouye–Wallace Field Sunday. Game one saw the Blaze come from behind to take the win 5–4. Game two saw the Royals take a 5–3 lead, with the Blaze tying it up on a controversial call, only to give the lead away in the bottom of the seventh for a 6–5 Royals win. Owen Kelly got the start on the bump for the Royals in the first game, throwing all seven innings. Kelly was cruising after giving up two runs in the first, not allowing another run until the top half of the sixth. That’s where the wheels came off, giving up three runs to the Blaze as they took a 5–4 lead and closed the door on any comeback hopes. “We came ready to play, we did a lot of things right in that first game,” assistant coach Bruce Biro said. “We had

some clutch hits when we needed them but unfortunately we didn’t have the hits we needed in those last two innings when we really needed them.” Nanoose Bay’s Justin Dieleman went 2–4 at the plate, as did Len Nakatsuka,
from Nanaimo, in a losing cause. Nanoose Bay’s Josh Anderson also went 1–3 with an RBI to boot. With the first game in the books and the temperature rising, Parksville’s Andrew Evernden looked to continue the
solid pitching for the Royals in game two. With the Blaze leading 3–2, the Royals put together a rally with two outs in the fifth inning, as Cory Bukauskas, Nakatsuka and Dieleman all came around to score, giving the Royals a 5–3 lead heading in to the sixth. The Blaze scored two runs to tie the game but it wasn’t without an argument from Biro and a handful of fans as well. Biro was ejected from the game when he disputed a ball that landed about five feet foul, with a dent in the roof of the batting cage in right field to prove it. The call stood and the two teams were locked at 5–5. The Royals held it together though, not letting a blown call stop them from taking control. Ethan Fox hit a lead off double in the bottom of the seventh, advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a wild pitch, giving the Royals a 6–5 win. “We played hard and showed that we can hang with anyone,” Biro said. “The boys didn’t let a bad call get in the way of them winning a game that they deserved to win and that was great to see.”

A second place finish wasn’t what Jeremy “JD” DiPietrantonio was expecting but he put on a good show and worked hard to finish near the top at the INBF Canada West Coast Natural Championships. With his eyes set on a first place finish at the bodybuilding
competition in North Vancouver and a chance at earning his professional card, JD finished just short of his goal but was happy with the result. “It’s not what I was hoping for, obviously, but I had a really good time,” he said. “Everyone who was there at the competition looked really good and they went really hard. I’m glad that I com-
peted in the show and I’m happy with where I ended up.” The second place finish is something that just fuels DiPietrantonio, owner of JD’s Athletic Personal Training, to come back better the next time. With all the training that went on over the last six months to prepare for this event, he said a year off will help him work on things to finish first
and get back on track. “A big part of what we do has to do with the diet, the workout and it really takes a mental strain on you,” JD said. “The last four months of the diet and prep for the competition was difficult but the end result is what you work towards. So in knowing what I can do after going through this, I know what it’s going to take next
time to finish first instead of second.” It was his second time competing, first in the natural category. A big supporter of going the natural route, JD made the cross over to the natural event this time around, where the bodybuilders have no performance enhancing additions to their body. Twenty students at the Parksville Taekwondo Academy were out to achieve their black belts recently at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre. Their day started with a three hour closed door session where Grand Master Kil Woo Kim, who’s an eighth degree black belt Korean master, ran everyone through their paces. A four hour test in the afternoon, followed that up, where family and friends gathered to share the moment and cheer the students on. “The test was very difficult for some, and there was definitely a lot of blood, sweat and tears,” Master Brett Fee said. “Everyone came out of there proud and
stronger than ever. I think I am the proudest of all, because I get the privilege of working with these great individuals for many years, and watch them grow, develop and evolve into amazing people.” Devon Beaman, Emma Sterling, Griffin Easthom, Raelia Van Dusen, Sebastian Magana, Tiana Dutton, Trevor Carter, Payton Carter, Tyson Krieger, Carson Reid, Aidan Mackay, Aly Coldwell-Fraser, Carter Worthen, Chase Cleveland, and Christina Wright all earned their first degree black belts. I had a great support system around me and having that really helps you get through the hard times. My support system was a big reason why I was able to even compete in an event like this, if I didn’t have them it wouldn’t have happened.”

JD will take a year off and look to come back fresh in 2016. “It’s going to be a tough grind again, for sure, but I know what I need to do,” he said. “Everyone else who goes through it, it’s rewarding for us all, we all go through it together and it’s like a big family in a lot of ways. Parksville’s holiday appeal started long ago JILL DAVIES NEWS Contributor
It’s July, school is out and once again Parksville welcomes the return of summer visitors to the sandy beaches and salty warm waters of Oceanside. Whereas Qualicum was once known for the judges, movie stars and other celebrities who visited the resort, Parksville has always been a mecca for middle class families who just want to enjoy a holiday by the beach. Parksville’s appeal as a holiday destination had an unlikely beginning when, at the turn of the last century, Mr and Mrs H.K. Harrison left England for a new life in Canada. They eventually arrived in Parksville where they quickly realized that the steam engines chugging into McBride Junction would soon be bringing visitors wanting to enjoy the delights of Oceanside. They put their hard earned savings into purchasing five acres of land from Albert Hirst. This land, adjacent to what is now Parksville’s Community Park was where they built the cottages that just a hundred years ago became known as Harrison’s Beach Camp. A few years later, on Good Friday in 1917, The Island Hall Hotel was opened by two enterprising British women, Winifred Philpott and Joan Foster. Advertised as “The Hotel with a Beach for a Doorstep”, it was to become one of Parksville’s premier resorts for the next 80 years. Over the years, guests at the Hotel included Princess Elizabeth and Prince Phillip on their 1951 royal tour of Canada as well as Maharishi Yogi, founder of the International Mediation Society. Renowned for its romantic setting The Island Hall Hotel hosted many a wedding and ball over the years closing its doors in 2005 to make way for The Beach Club. Another destination that was to become popular with would-be holiday makers was the vacation resort built on the Craig property. It was after James Craig’s wife Gertrude died in 1928 that James, together with his two sons, Duncan and Fred decided to build 15 small cottages on the property. They named their resort ‘Craig’s on the Sea Auto Camp’. By 1930 they were open for business. The cottages catered to the basic needs of would-be-holiday-makers; each contained a kitchen area together with a bed sitting room and a small stove to warm the chilly evenings. In addition every cabin also had a lean-to shelter to house the visitors’ motor vehicles. By 1940, just ten years later, Parksville was becoming known for everything that still attracts visitors today; wonderful scenery, beautiful beaches, hiking and fishing. New cabins built at the Craig’s Auto Camp were larger though still without bathrooms or

running water. For those without tents or caravans, the cabins provided holiday-by-the sea-homes, creating nostalgic memories for families that often returned year after year. When the property was eventually sold in 1984, Duncan Craig’s wife Marion was known to have written personal letters to the many loyal families telling them of the camp’s impending closure. Adjoining the Craig property was a 16 acre parcel of land jointly owned by the Parkhurst and Hall families. The property that is still known as Beach Acres was then the only resort along the present Resort Way. Located there was a restaurant named Benny’s. The restaurant however was without a kitchen so meals ordered by customers were actually cooked at the Parkhurst home and then taken up the dirt road for the delectation of the diners. Today, two of the Craig cabins can still be seen
at Parksville Museum & Archives. Heralded by the original sign that reads The Craig Auto Camp on the Sea, one of the original cabins is furnished with holiday artifacts of days gone-by. The larger and later cabin contains fascinating objects from the Craig family history and memorabilia from the Craig Auto Camp together with scale models of McBride Junction Rail Station, The Island Hall Hotel, The Rod & Gun, Cameron Lake Chalet and more.
