It’s show time in Downtown New West Sunday, July 13 marks the 15th anniversary of the Key West Ford Show & Shine, and this year promises to be the best yet. Every year, Show & Shine draws enormous crowds and hundreds of car, truck and motor enthusiasts. This year is no different, as an array of custom, classic vintage and specialty cars prepare to line up again for this special anniversary occasion. The free family event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and expects to see over 350 cars and trucks. These displays include 21 different vehicle classes with opportunities to win big in each. The event also features several specialty awards such as Mayor’s Choice, VIP’s choice, Best in Show, and the Long Distance Award. To mark the special 15th anniversary, we have been looking back through the years to find our biggest supporters, and our long standing loyal participants. Some of these amazing car-loving folks have even been featured in a social media campaign highlighting their commitment to the show. Please see NEXT PAGE

Family Zone full of fun
At this year’s Show & Shine, kids will have a blast in the Save-OnFoods Family Zone located between Fourth Street and Blackwood Street. Bring your kids down to enjoy the Tumblebus, a full-sized school bus that will be filled with fun and kid-friendly gym equipment that’s perfect for active kids who can’t sit still. The Family Zone also features a fun balloon artist who’s sure to impress with his extraordinary balloon creations. If that’s not enough, treats such a Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt and Mini Doughnuts will also be available along with a Save-On-Foods BBQ to keep those hunger pangs at bay. Finally, you’re sure to enjoy the exciting demonstrations by Blood & Iron Martial Arts.

Some people might come for the classic cars and upbeat entertainment, but you can guarantee they’ll want to stay for the food. At this year’s Show & Shine, expect to see tons of fantastic food vendors offering up a variety of great eats. Japadog, a crowd favourite, will be back again this year selling their unique Japanese-style hot dogs. Try their signature hot dog with teriyaki sauce, mayo and seaweed or be a little more adventurous with the tempura dog on rice. If Japadog isn’t your thing, Poomba’s Smokehouse will leave your mouth watering with their delicious BBQ, or you can grab a handmade sausage from Wilkyz Grill. Big Red’s Poutine will serve some of the best poutine around, with hand-cut fries and beef stock gravy topped with cheese curds so real you’ll think you’re in Montreal. If you’re looking for something to wash down all that food then stop by one of five beer gardens spread throughout the event. Take a seat and relax outside Judge Begbie’s, The Columbia Theatre, Heritage Grill, The Met Bar & Grill or Stefano’s while taking a break from the hustle and excitement. Drop by the Met to sample their wide selection of craft beers, or snack on the array of foods offered by each restaurant. Stefano’s and the Columbia Theatre will even be featuring on-the-spot outdoor BBQ style food. Finally, save room for dessert and grab a treat from Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt or a fresh, sugarcoated mini-doughnut. You can also check out the great treats and yummy eats supplied by many of the River Market merchants who will be setting up in Hyack Square.
One such regular is Murray Chambers, volunteer judge and participant since Show & Shine’s conception in 1999. Chambers is the proud owner of two custom show cars, one of which is his completely remodeled 1986 Pontiac 2x2 Aero Coupe. With help from his friends Ed Kihen and Bruce Steele, Chambers spent four years in his garage perfecting his ride. The custom car won Grand Champion in the Show & Shine’s second year, and has been reappearing ever since. Murray attends up to 12 car shows a year, but says the Key West Ford Show & Shine is his favourite, since the size and scope of this event instills in him a sense of pride. Sandra Walton is another engaged and passionate member of the Show & Shine alumni, boasting 11 years of involvement. Walton, a drag racer in former days, has been everything from the only female judge to a volunteer dedicated to helping plan the show and its famous after parties. Walton owns a 1974 Pontiac Ventura which is featured in the show every year. The Show & Shine is Walton’s home base car show, and she never misses it, saying, “All in all I’ve had some great years with the Show & Shine and the New West BIA.” Finally, Russ Cooper, winner of Mayor’s Choice award last year will be returning with his 1972 GMC Sierra 1500. Cooper’s favourite part of the Show & Shine, like many others, is the camaraderie he feels when he arrives, and the amount of people the show brings in. “Other car shows it tends to be just the car guys. Here, it’s everyone.”

They’re ready to share their unique blend of rock, pop and country with Show & Shine audiences. They will perform some of their big hits along with their award-winning contemporary country originals. This year’s entertainment will also feature the Maple Ridge-based band Bone Daddies. This four-piece outfit offers a unique blend of ska, punk, and rockabilly. Finally, this year’s Teamster Stage will feature a rousing performance from local swing dancing troupe Royal City Swing. Offering swing dance lessons and live music, these groovy high-energy performers will have you hopping from start to finish. Besides live music on stage all day, this year’s Key West Ford Show & Shine also boasts a variety of family friendly and exciting entertainment options. Family Zone full of fun
At this year’s Show & Shine, kids will have a blast in the Save-OnFoods Family Zone located between Fourth Street and Blackwood Street. Bring your kids down to enjoy the Tumblebus, a full-sized school bus that will be filled with fun and kid-friendly gym equipment that’s perfect for active kids who can’t sit still. The Family Zone also features a fun balloon artist who’s sure to impress with his extraordinary balloon creations. If that’s not enough, treats such a Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt and Mini Doughnuts will also be available along with a Save-On-Foods BBQ to keep those hunger pangs at bay. Finally, you’re sure to enjoy the exciting demonstrations by Blood & Iron Martial Arts.

Some people might come for the classic cars and upbeat entertainment, but you can guarantee they’ll want to stay for the food. At this year’s Show & Shine, expect to see tons of fantastic food vendors offering up a variety of great eats. Japadog, a crowd favourite, will be back again this year selling their unique Japanese-style hot dogs. Try their signature hot dog with teriyaki sauce, mayo and seaweed or be a little more adventurous with the tempura dog on rice. If Japadog isn’t your thing, Poomba’s Smokehouse will leave your mouth watering with their delicious BBQ, or you can grab a handmade sausage from Wilkyz Grill. Big Red’s Poutine will serve some of the best poutine around, with hand-cut fries and beef stock gravy topped with cheese curds so real you’ll think you’re in Montreal. If you’re looking for something to wash down all that food then stop by one of five beer gardens spread throughout the event. Take a seat and relax outside Judge Begbie’s, The Columbia Theatre, Heritage Grill, The Met Bar & Grill or Stefano’s while taking a break from the hustle and excitement. Drop by the Met to sample their wide selection of craft beers, or snack on the array of foods offered by each restaurant. Stefano’s and the Columbia Theatre will even be featuring on-the-spot outdoor BBQ style food. Finally, save room for dessert and grab a treat from Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt or a fresh, sugarcoated mini-doughnut. You can also check out the great treats and yummy eats supplied by many of the River Market merchants who will be setting up in Hyack Square.
One such regular is Murray Chambers, volunteer judge and participant since Show & Shine’s conception in 1999. Chambers is the proud owner of two custom show cars, one of which is his completely remodeled 1986 Pontiac 2x2 Aero Coupe. With help from his friends Ed Kihen and Bruce Steele, Chambers spent four years in his garage perfecting his ride. The custom car won Grand Champion in the Show & Shine’s second year, and has been reappearing ever since. Murray attends up to 12 car shows a year, but says the Key West Ford Show & Shine is his favourite, since the size and scope of this event instills in him a sense of pride. Sandra Walton is another engaged and passionate member of the Show & Shine alumni, boasting 11 years of involvement. Walton, a drag racer in former days, has been everything from the only female judge to a volunteer dedicated to helping plan the show and its famous after parties. Walton owns a 1974 Pontiac Ventura which is featured in the show every year. The Show & Shine is Walton’s home base car show, and she never misses it, saying, “All in all I’ve had some great years with the Show & Shine and the New West BIA.” Finally, Russ Cooper, winner of Mayor’s Choice award last year will be returning with his 1972 GMC Sierra 1500. Cooper’s favourite part of the Show & Shine, like many others, is the camaraderie he feels when he arrives, and the amount of people the show brings in. “Other car shows it tends to be just the car guys. Here, it’s everyone.”

It’s show time in Downtown New West Sunday, July 13 marks the 15th anniversary of the Key West Ford Show & Shine, and this year promises to be the best yet. Every year, Show & Shine draws enormous crowds and hundreds of car, truck and motor enthusiasts. This year is no different, as an array of custom, classic vintage and specialty cars prepare to line up again for this special anniversary occasion. The free family event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and expects to see over 350 cars and trucks. These displays include 21 different vehicle classes with opportunities to win big in each. The event also features several specialty awards such as Mayor’s Choice, VIP’s choice, Best in Show, and the Long Distance Award. To mark the special 15th anniversary, we have been looking back through the years to find our biggest supporters, and our long standing loyal participants.
