They say that history repeats itself; it’s also true that history is made. Last weekend both happened when the Boundary Women’s Softball league held their wind-up tournament. The Liquor Store Chicks (LSC) from Grand Forks were undefeated in the tournament— that’s the history repeating itself part. History was made because Beaverdell finished in the money. “Yea! We got money for the first time ever!” yelled Beaverdell MVP Rosanna Zitko when they picked up their third place trophy. The action started on Friday evening with a round robin component that saw each of the four teams in the league play the other three. On Saturday afternoon the double knockout brackets started with two games that day and the final four on Sunday. Beaverdell had lost all three of their round robin games. That meant they had to go up against the undefeated LSC in their first double-knockout game on Saturday afternoon. When they went to bed that night they had lost four out of four and were facing elimination in a 9:30 a.m. game against Greenwood. Greenwood had lost to Rock Creek in a double knock-out game on Saturday evening, so that meant the losing team would be cut.

The match between Beaverdell and Greenwood turned out to be the closest game of the weekend with Beaverdell taking the win 6-5—a real crowd pleaser. Rock Creek and LSC, both undefeated, met Sunday morning. Rock Creek lost that game 133, then bested Beaverdell in the 12:30 p.m. game by a score of 14-6. Beaverdell had a great run on Sunday. They’d held on to take third place and did it in style—winning the Most Sportsman-like Team trophy as well. TGIS will determine need for senior housing facility Submitted

The Greenwood Improvement Society (TGIS) has received a $10,000 Seed Funding grant from the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) to support a feasibility study to determine the need for a senior housing facility in Greenwood. The award of this grant is the first step the Greenwood Improvement Society has made towards construction of housing specifically designed for senior living in Greenwood. CMHC Seed Funding will provide the financial assistance required to evaluate housing need

and demand, and find funding and other resources. Fred Marshall, TGIS president, explained, “If the feasibility study indicates a strong need for a senior housing in Greenwood, TGIS can then move forward with credible information upon which they may base their request for provincial, federal and possibly private funding to construct such a facility.” In February 2013, TGIS received support in principal from city council when they promised the provision of land should the senior housing project go forward.

Hats off to volunteers An amazing spirit of cooperation has gone into the making of this year’s Founder’s Day in Greenwood. The day has been organized by the Greenwood Board of Trade and they invited everyone to help them make it a success. The day-long celebration of the city’s birthday comes complete with a parade and an old-fashioned family day in the park. There will be dozens of vendors and booths, including the same local non-profits and service organizations that have been active participants for years— the Greenwood Public Library, the Royal Canadian Legion and the Order of the Eastern Star. It all kicks off with a pancake breakfast starting at 8 a.m. hosted by the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Department. The parade will happen at 10:30 a.m., beginning at McArthur Centre and winding up at the Lions Park where there will be a farmer’s market, bingo, clown city amusement centre for the kids, a beer garden starting at noon, ceremonies and cake, karaoke and door prizes. The day will conclude with live music from 5 p.m. to dusk. The best part is the price—admission to the park is free so you are guaranteed to get your money’s worth and more! There will be a collection of non-perishable food items for the food bank too, so please help if you are able. Founder’s Day celebrates those who have come before us, those who helped make the city what it is and what Founder’s Day itself has become over the years. That being said, hats off to Merlin Phelps who started Founder’s Day back in 1987 for Greenwood’s 90th year of incorporation as a city; and a big thank you to Les and Nora Williams who reignited the interest in Founder’s Day and kept it alive since 1999.

Shop gets curiouser and couriouser

An antique store is a wonderful place are our own pickers. You just never know to meet people. Everywhere you look is what you are going to come across.” When I asked the difference between another curiosity and every curiosity is a conversation starter. Shannon Kelly-Keough is the proprietor of Greenwood City Antiques and runs the business three days a week with the help of her husband Terry. Terry was in the shop last Friday and pointed out two limited edition prints that illustrate the point. “We couldn’t read the language on the back and we had been asking anyone who comes in. One fellow recognized one as from Holland and the other he thought was from Italy. We didn’t get them to read the back but later there came a man from Romania who could speak French. When I asked him he replied, ‘Well it says right here,’ he said! ‘Antwerp in Belgium—it even gives the street and the other is from Southern France.’ So now they know a bit of the provenance of the pieces, though they still don’t know the artist.” Shannon and Terry like to find out where things are from and the story behind the piece and the place. “It makes a big difference to people, the historical significance of things.” It all adds to the conversation too. Make Canada a spray-free country Editor, The Times: An open letter to Prime Minister Harper and Premier Christy Clark Dear Prime Minister and Premier: You are still allowing spraying of poisons in Canada, which is harming thousands and thousands of Canadians.

It is time it stopped, before it contaminates Canada’s waters. It has already poisoned our air and food. I was driving on Hwy 3 in Midway recently, at 12:10 p.m., when they were spraying above the schoolyard in Midway. The school children were out on the playground playing, while I watched the spray drift right through Midway.

The schoolyard was saturated with poisons. Weeds should be controlled naturally. There is no need to use deadly poisons. Make Canada a spray-free country before more people die of these deadly poisons. Gladys Brown, Midway

I still feel the insistence by Fortis to install smart meters, purchased without sufficient research into the effects on human health (both short- and long-term), is an invasion of privacy and a case of bullying. Customers concerned about their own health and privacy are put in the position of having to pay extra charges.

We become hostage. In addition to humans now being bombarded by EMFs (electromagnetic frequencies) from all angles, I have heard stories of electronics being interfered with, and individual health issues as a result of smart meters. You say the EMF signal gets weaker as it goes through barriers such as walls. I rent an old metal trailer with metal outside and very thin walls. Metal is a conductor of electrical energy. I am sensitive to energy and as such prefer to remain “corded” for telephone and Internet. I also find that our personal privacy is being invaded. I sensed when Internet became available, that anything

done on Internet was at risk of not being private. This has been proven. And so it will be with smart meters. No matter what you say about security, our privacy is again being invaded. We are going to be monitored even more—like Big Brother watching us. So, Mr. Dyck, I don’t agree with what you have said about safe installations, reducing fire risks, privacy, special benefits (that really are no different from the existing service) and the health facts.
