Boundary Youth Soccer held their spring wind-up in Midway last weekend and as Jean-Paul Sartre once said, “In football everything is complicated by the presence of the opposite team.”

Property owners in Kettle Valley and Rock Creek will have the opportunity to contract fire protection response beginning July 1. The details of the Fire Response Service Agreement were revealed at a meeting hosted by the Village of Midway and the Midway Volunteer Fire Department at the fairground pavilion on Tuesday, June 17. Thirty-six people came out, plus a large contingent of volunteer firefighters. Over the course of the two-hour meeting, Midway Fire Chief Walter Osellame and Mayor Randy Kappes presented the case for the service. Osellame noted it had taken three and a half

More than 200 kids were out on the Boundary Central Secondary Soccer fields last Saturday— and if you counted all the grandparents, parents and coaches in attendance, the population of Midway was probably doubled. It was the wind-up of the spring schedule for the Boundary Youth Soccer Association (BYSA). The league fields teams ranging in age from 5 to 15; and Kicks 4 Kids (K4K) is set up for those who are younger than that.

“It was a great day for it,” said BYSA director Bob MacLean. “You needed a little bit of sunscreen but other than that it was perfect.” MacLean, who got involved to help his grandkids have access to soccer, said the league is structured to help kids develop their skills. “Everything is age appropriate with smaller pitches, goals and teams for the K4K group moving up with bigger fields and more rules for the older teams.” All coaches and referees are certified and parents are encouraged to cheer for both teams—you don’t cheer for one specific child all of the time.

“We want all of the kids to feel like they have contributed,” said MacLean. “It is very affordable. The kids will buy cleats but the league provides the uniforms, balls and nets. We need more volunteers—and we seem to have a hard time getting coaches from the West End.” MacLean explained that the fall league is a drop-in once a week at 6:30 p.m. in Grand Forks. “Just show up and there will be a ref there for you and parents to take care of things. Lots to do Canada Day

Parade in Rock Creek There is lots of activity planned for the West Boundary on Canada Day. Discover Rock Creek Society is putting on the fifth annual Canada Day Parade. Participants will gather at 10:30 a.m. in the parking lot on the east side of the Petro Canada station. The parade starts at 11 and ends at the Rock Creek Medical Centre. “Come and join the parade fun, or be a spectator and help celebrate Canada’s birthday,” said parade organizer Angela Kitchen. Following the parade, local 4-H members

will be staging carnival games at the Rock Creek Medical Centre. Kids may also participate in arts and crafts and the Kettle River Lions will provide lunch. Time for tea Sacred Heart Parish Spring Tea and Bazaar was held at McArthur Centre in Greenwood last Saturday. Because the rectory beside Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church was sold last year, the tea was moved to the community hall. As well as the tea and goodies, there were tables featuring raffles, baked goods and sewing to raise funds for the local CWC.

It’s never too late The official Invasive Species Week in B.C. ran from June 6-15, but it is still a good time to organize friends, or even the entire neighbourhood, in a community weed pull. Pulling weeds is a lot more fun if you have a group of people working together. A lot of invasive plants have not gone to seed yet so now is the perfect time to get rid of them. If you can stop them from spreading this year just think how much better it could look next year. Even if you just take a look around your own yard and spend a bit of time taking out the invasives on your own property, it will make a big difference in the grand scheme of things. Be sure to dispose of your invasive species properly. As land stewards we all have a responsibility to take care of our planet. There are other things you can do, including thinking twice about buying exotic pets. Some of them can live 50 or more years. Are you ready for that kind of commitment? For example, releasing a red-eared slider turtle into the wild can bring disease and competition for resources. Never dump the contents of your aquarium into any body of water. There can be a lot of invasive plants and species in your fish tank that could destroy the place you dump it. Often times we don’t see the damage we have caused until years later. But it’s never too late to start repairing the damage. Teacher going ‘full circle’ Elementary teacher Linda Frank is wrapping up over two decades of work in the West Boundary and is heading to Hutton Elementary in Grand Forks for her approaching retirement years. Her first teaching job was in Canal Flats in the ’70s in a two-room schoolhouse. She had 38 students—she would have had 44, but she insisted there wasn’t enough room for that many desks in the classroom. Her husband worked for the Ministry of Forests and, when he was transferred to Beaverdell, while she was still unpacking boxes at their new home, the local principal came knocking on her door to offer her a job. After that kitchen table interview, she taught at Beaverdell and Westbridge for two years. From there she took a temporary position at Hutton Elementary in Grand Forks in 1982 and then stayed home to raise her children. When the opportunity came to move back to what was then School District 13 (Kettle Valley), she began what would be 15 years in Greenwood and another 12 in Midway. “So I am going full circle.” By then her family had moved to Christina Lake, so she’s spent the past 27 winters driving over the Eholt Summit. “I now have an opportunity to drive only 20 minutes to work for the next year,” she observed. “I’ll get an automatic raise and I won’t have to pay those awful gas prices.” When you’ve put that much teaching time in one community you inevitably wind up teaching kids of children you taught in prior years. “You know it’s time to leave when you start teaching their children,” she said with a chuckle. Frank did the interview while sitting on the picket line last week. Over her career Frank had taught the children of two of the other women on the line that morning; and will be teaching the grandchild of a third. They recalled that they always knew how their kids were doing because of the phone calls Frank made. They also remember that her arms were always open with hugs for the kids and the assemblies she had the kids put on for their parents. “It gave the kids recognition,” Frank said, “but it also gave them a chance to perform in front of a group.” She’s taught every grade from Kindergarten to Grade 6—often teaching multiple-grade classrooms—and was designated as the head teacher for many years at Midway Elementary. When asked to comment on the current job action, Frank said, “I have been in job action since we became a union. A lot of people get up-

set that our union is fighting and they don’t understand. They think that we are just out to get money, and that’s not true. I have taught for a long time and I have seen how the system works and when we have extra help it just makes all the difference for our children—especially children with special needs. The government needs to stop being a bully and return us to fair class sizes and class composition that they had stripped from us 12 years ago.” Frank’s daughter is now a teacher in School District 51 too and she says that’s another reason she is out on the picket line now. “We want to help those new young teachers coming through, because we know what it was like before we had all those supports. I don’t want to see them having poor working conditions because the government is not putting enough money into the system.” She sees definite advantages to smaller rural schools. “When you have smaller classes you have a closer relationship with your students. For those who have problems, you can make that difference because you have touched base with someone. Someone has actually had a conversation with them and given them that little bit of attention. That is why it is critical to have smaller class sizes just because it is like a human touch.” “I have enjoyed my years teaching here and the support I have from the community and parents,” she said in closing. “Because the community and the parents can make a huge difference with the children.” *** West Boundary Elementary Teacher Judy Harpur is retiring. The property also has a beautiful new rail fence bordering the park along Cut Off Road thanks to the generous donation of time and effort by Greg MacDonald who installed the posts, and Mark Sabo who installed the rails along with general contractor Handsome Stranger. The society has hired three students to work on the new trails and by Canada Day we will have new signage up and have the property looking nice

and tidy. Special thanks to Hazel Self for putting in work on the gardens and planting flower boxes. This project was made possible with the help of a grant from the Phoenix Foundation along with funds from the Speakeasy theater production in April, plus some donations toward the park from previous years. The hope is that people will use the new facilities enough to warrant another expansion down the road.

New signs along Hwy 3 are up. “We had a real fine morning climbing up and down ladders and catching ourselves on barb wire, but they are up,” reported Phil Gunhouse. Fraser reported the most recent constitution registered with the province is from 1974. “It is therefore very outdated and obsolete.” It was decided that more time was needed to deal with the issue and the board agreed to table further discussion until after the fair. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, July 16 at 7 p.m.

Small shop, big finds It is the smallest antique store in the smallest city in Canada. Greenwood City Antiques is also the city’s newest business—located next door to the Pacific Grill at 309 Copper Street. Proprietor Shannon Kelly-Keough says she specializes in small things, “because it is such a small place.” Kelly-Keough says she’s been into antiques “forever.” “The first antique I bought I was about 21 and I heard an ad on the radio for a hand-made closet and I needed a closet. So I went and took a look at it. It was a beautiful antique wardrobe. I borrowed money from about four different friends to have enough to buy it for $150. When I got it to my apartment my landlord offered me $1,000 for it and I wouldn’t sell. It is still in my house.” That got her hooked, and today her little store has everything from a first edition Robert Service to Elvis bubble gum. “When I was a musician on the road in the ‘80s I traveled around Western Canada and picked up a few nice things. “Our band played Moosejaw, Saskatchewan and the hotel was selling all of their antiques. They had everything out of their rooms and their dining room—everything. They’d put a piece in the lobby and when it sold they’d bring up another piece. I bought an oak sideboard and carried it around in the back of my camper van for two years while I was singing on the road. I also have that still at my house.” There will be new inventory every week. “Because I still have my house full and we are always on the hunt for stuff. Is there a SILVER Lining? It’s becoming obvious to everyone that gold seems to be the one area that is safe to invest in, particularly with what is going on around the world. However, while gold dominates the headlines, the silver market actually enjoys a superior fundamental supply/demand story than that of gold. Silver bullion is now the more scarce “precious” metal than gold bullion is from an investment supply perspective. This is where the silver story gets interesting!

Owning real-estate and other tangible assets like gold and silver have their merits, surely, but many investors don’t have the understanding of how to participate in investing in this asset class. Buying physical gold and silver is becoming more difficult, particularly in small quantities. Investors can now buy investment funds that are based and backed by physical gold and silver. This is an inexpensive and convenient way for the average investor to participate in this asset class.

So where do we go from here? The outlook for gold and silver stocks could be very exciting in today’s environment. The need to be in precious metals has never been greater and now should be the time that investors take a serious look at how much of their portfolios are allocated to this asset class. If markets are to head over the edge, then safety and liquidity would almost invariably be found in gold, silver and other precious metals.

Not only does the physical investment in gold and silver show great promise, but so does the stocks of companies that produce these metals. Gold and silver prices have shot up dramatically but the stocks in these assets have severely lagged in performance. It is the belief of innumerable experts that ultimately, sooner than later, there will be a reckoning in the prices of stocks in gold and silver producers. In an otherwise volatile equity market, gold and silver stocks represent a bona fide growth sector.

Being in the right asset class has always been key to successful investing. Surprisingly enough, paper money going forward, could propose some risk to investors. Financial systems today are on rocky ground. Consumer spending is waning and interest rates are at historic lows. Money is sitting on the sidelines at record levels and interestingly enough, producing record low returns. This could have consequences for investors, particularly those entering their pre-retirement years. Underfunded retirement plans are fast becoming the majority and that could spell the ultimate risk for investors heading into retirement.

While the area is within the service area of the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Department, Fire Chief Roy Terashita said there were not enough members in town at the time to respond and the van was allowed to burn itself out. Grand Forks resident Patrick O’Doherty confirmed he was the owner of the

van. He told the Times on Tuesday he had nothing but praise for the RCMP and ICBC and that he understands why the city was unable to respond. Rumours had been circulating about the fire that cast a bad light on the fire department and the City of Greenwood. O’Doherty said he wanted to refute those rumours. “I have no hard feeling towards the City of Greenwood and everything has worked out as well as it could.”

Nakatsu said that every electrical fixture in the big barn and at the livestock wash rack has been changed. The lighting upgrades were funded through a regional district gas tax grant. The arena has been cultivated and stumps pulled by Bill Bosovich, and Art Harfman brought in topsoil. Nakatsu said that Dennis Martin and Dan and Hazel Self have been instrumental in helping him with these projects. “We are right on budget—in fact we are a little bit under budget,” boasted Nakatsu, who said he is impressed with the willingness of the people to help. “I asked people—they had said when you need a hand just give me a shout— and when I call them up they come.

Fair grounds get facelift A lot of improvements have been made to the Rock Creek fair grounds over the past year. In 2013, 100 picnic tables were built, made possible by memorial donations and sponsorships that covered the cost of the project. Fair director Danny Nakatsu used the same funding formula again this year to build 40 new benches. The grounds have benefited from $3,500 worth of paint that has been applied by volunteers, “to just about every flat surface in this whole place, including the corral, the beer gardens, bleachers,” Nakatsu said with a laugh. The Kettle River Artists lent their own artistic talents by painting the inside of the pavilion. The electrical infrastructure has seen some major improvements.
