Message from Mayor Christina Benty
Graduation is a major community event and this year was no exception. How wonderful to see family and friends gather to celebrate this milestone in these young people’s lives. It was gratifying to observe not only the affection that this class had for one another, but to hear their affection for the small community that they grew up in. No doubt you will be inundated with words of wisdom. Soak it all up because we want you to be successful. My personal words of advice for you are this: always remember the teeth brushing rule. No one brushes their teeth once a month thirty times and expects a clean bill of health. That is ridiculous. It is a daily albeit tedious habit that creates the compound effect. It is that way with everything in life. It is the small, incremental decisions you make on a daily basis that shape your future. You are and forever will be a product of your choices in life. Choose your habits wisely. So on behalf of the Town of Golden, it is my pleasure to offer my sincere congratulations to the Grad class of 2014. No matter how far or near you may be I hope that you will always think about this community with fondness.

Principal’s Message; T he eaglets are ready to fly Congratulations to the GSS/GAS Graduates of 2014!!! This is such a special time as we celebrate our Graduates’ successful achievement of the BC Grade 12 Dogwood Certificate and for the BC one special graduate, Evergreen School Completion Certificate. With this milestone accomplished, they are now ready to pursue their future goals – post-secondary education, work, travel. During their years at Golden Secondary/Golden Alternate, these students became very fond of the ‘Eagle Story’ and I know they secretly hoped to watch it once more before the end of the year, but I didn’t think we could afford the extra time….sorry grads. Even though we didn’t get the opportunity at school, the Historians generously shared a key moment of the inspirational video during the Graduation Ceremony last week. To sum up the story, the mother eagle teaches her young all the skills that are necessary for independence until she
feels they are ready to leave the nest and then to get them started on their way, she gives them a gentle push out of the nest. As the story says, our job at Golden Secondary has now been completed and tonight our eaglets are spreading their wings and getting ready to fly. What has gotten them to this point tonight? Over the years, they have grown from small children proudly standing up in front of their peers sharing their favourite treasured item during show and tell times to performing at Jam Sessions in the forum at GSS and in the Spirit Square. They fine-tuned their athletic skills to win championships. They tackled and mastered challenging courses such as Calculus, Biology, Math, Chemistry, History, English, and French. They completed and presented Independent Study projects, learned to play musical instruments and sing, organized Grad, planned Leadership activities, attended Community Conversations with the Mayor, built things out of wood and metal, fixed cars, drove cars, and worked at jobs to put gas in their cars. It has been truly rewarding to see these young people grow and develop their skills and talents over the years they have been in school. As you can see, they are definitely ready to become independent and move on with their lives. That is how they have reached this point where they are leaving the nest. The most outstanding characteristic about this
Graduating Class is the amazing manner in which each of them has retained their special unique qualities, while still melding as a close knit group. I know that they will do great things in our world in the future! Dr. Seuss sums it up nicely with these words of advice: “Good, better, best; never be at rest. ‘Til your good becomes your better, and your better becomes your best. If you don't know where you’re going, any road will take you there. You have brains in your head; you have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own and you know what you know. You are the guy who'll decide where to go. Will you succeed? Yes, indeed! Ninety-eight and three-quarters percent guaranteed.” Finally, to my Grads of 2014…representing the Mother Eagle, before as I ‘push’ you out of the nest, I would like to leave you with some last words: No matter where you are or what you are doing, remember what Boxer from Animal Farm would say, “I Must Work Harder”. Valedictorian’s Message; Do not fear the future I want to tell you about the strangest dream that I had last night, but I will tell you about that dream later. I have something else to say first. I do not think, comrades, that I shall be with you for many months longer… Oh sorry, wrong speech. If you can’t tell, I’m a fan of Animal Farm. Welcome everyone. In preparing this speech, I read a lot of speeches from all of the greats; Martin Luther King, Winston Churchill, and read some speeches that were given in this venue years ago. But I do realize that at the end of the day I have to write a speech that will mean something to my brethren. So here we go. The world as we know it is going to end. We don’t know when, we don’t know how. Me and my classmates have learned not to trust any rumours. We together have survived every forecasted apocalypse from Y2K, to the end of the Mayan calendar, and all the other little ones in between. It may not be a great idea to start off a hopefully inspiring speech with this bleak fact, but what I want to make clear is that I have faith that everyone on this stage will accomplish something great by the time it does come to an end. We have come leaps and bounds from the first time we were all together. We proved once and for all that it is possible to fit one of us in a locker… which thankfully has not come up since that day. I remember going into that first day of high school with so many misconceptions about it. I believed that high
school was a place to be feared and loathed. Although I will not lie to you, there were some parts of high school that were scary. Everyone in Physics 12 has experienced some fear. I really believed that high school was exactly as the movies made it out to be. I thought that if you were not part of the cool kids, then your experience would be miserable. Thankfully, in our class, there are no cool kids. In fact, we are all equally cool and uncool. We owe this to the fact that everyone in our grade is so different. With everyone being so different, we didn’t have time to form the high school stereotypes that I thought were going to be so common. We have artists, athletes, musicians, gamers, comedians. And my favourite thing, is that we all gel together perfectly. It seems the times have only brought us together. And we owe much of that togetherness to the teachers of GSS, for their years of support. In particular, I want you to hear something from a teacher that has inspired a lot of us. I want you to know something Mrs. Stott said. What she said, I have never forgotten. She said, “to find what you love, and do it.” This relatively simple concept is what I want to leave with my class. Go on and do what others have said to be impossible. Never settle for anything less than what you would want, because I know what you can achieve. And I’m not going to say that this is going to be easy. It is a good time for someone who might want to pipe in with the catchphrase of, “if you love what you do, you’ll Congratulations on your graduation!

never work a day in your life.” And to that I say, no. It’s going to be hard work. It’s going to be very hard. But fruits of your labour are going to be as delicious as muffins from the concession. When I look at my class I see a lot of things. I see friends, I see the memories that we share, and I hear the laughter that we’ve caused for one another. I feel a heaviness on my chest that soon we will go our separate ways. I feel the fear of moving on in the world, and of the thought of not knowing when I will see my friends again. This whole year, for many I’m assuming, the future has seemed very uncertain. But it no longer does. I no longer fear the future because I see it sitting right over there. And I know that we are as prepared as we can be. On behalf of myself, and on behalf of my class, I would like to thank you - the parents, the teachers and the school staff.
