Statue stands as a reminder of First World War contributions 100th anniversary of the shot that started the ‘War to End All Wars’ BY SHERI REGNIER Times Staff
Throughout the year, a true champion in the Home of Champions holds his ground in the centre of downtown Trail to honour 175 local men killed in conflicts from the First World War to Vietnam. The effigy of the unknown First World War soldier was unveiled in 2009 during Trail’s Nov. 11 Cenotaph ceremonies, and with the world commemorating the 100th anniversary of an incident that triggered the outbreak of the First World War, the statue took on special meaning again last week. On June 28, 1914 while riding in a motorcade through the streets of Sarajevo, Austria’s Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were shot and killed by a

lone Bosnian-Serb assassin. The murders set off a chain of events throughout the month of July, 1914, when the AustroSerbian situation escalated to include European world powers and the “War to End All Wars,” today referred to by historians as World War 1. Trail Mayor Dieter Bogs and the Trail Legion’s past president took a moment to reflect on the statue’s symbolism in the Silver City and the role the unknown Canadian soldier played in the “Great War.” “This really was a turning point for our country,” said Rob Reilly, six-year president of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 11. “Everybody in the community was involved in some way, and when you look at the size of Trail and the number of men who volunteered for service, it was phenomenal,” he continued. “When the men left, the women went to work at Cominco, and everyone became part of it. “So much of Canada’s history started with the First World War,” said Reilly. The statue represents the thousands of Canadians who fought and quietly returned to the country or died overseas without accolade. “Not everyone came back or died with a bunch of medals and recognition,” he explained. “They were a bunch of nobodies and that’s where the term unknown soldier comes from. Because it was these people who took the brunt of war.” The Cenotaph statue is an opportunity for our residents to show their respect and gratitude and to educate the community, noted the mayor. “In particular the young people of our area, about war and its importance,” said Bogs. “When you look at the number of residents who were enlisted in the First World War and Second World War from this area, it touches everyone.”

Canada Day reflections Festa Italiana provided opportunity to reflect on Canadian culture too BY LIZ BEVAN Times Staff
While visitors sat and enjoyed spaghetti and meatballs, pizza and gelato at the weekend’s Festa Italiana, they reflected on what it meant to be a Canadian and what Canada Day meant to them, whether a native Canadian or immigrant. Anita Bressanutti moved to Canada nearly 75 years ago from Italy when she was just 10 years old. Arriving in a new country was a scary thing at first for her, but she found her stride very quickly.
“When I got here, it was a little bit traumatic, but everybody was kind, helpful and in just a few weeks I discovered I could speak English,” she said, adding she extended the same helping hand to those that came to Canada from Italy after her. “I have to say, I have never been discriminated against throughout my schooling and after when I went to work at the bank, it was good that I knew Italian, so I could be helpful to people that came over.” Born in Italy, Bressanutti appreciates her heritage, but also celebrates Canada as her home. “As far as Canada goes, it doesn't matter where you were born,” she said. “I have a lot of relatives [in Italy] I keep in
touch with and it's a beautiful country, but I came to another beautiful country. I wouldn't even think about going back there to live. I am Canadian now.” For Eileen Peterson, Canada Day was a time to reflect on the sacrifices and hardships her predecessors had to go through when they first arrived in this vast country. “For me, there is a sense of celebration of [the immigrants] and the tough times [they went through] to make it easier here for me,” she said. “I didn't have to face wars, I didn't have to be a refugee and cross the ocean, I didn't have to work for $16 a month on a farm. For me, that is what I honour.” See WE, Page 3

It is a country that accepts everyone and the fact that we can celebrate like this here [at the Festa] and we’re so free. We can do what we please. We have great work ethic here and while we have rules, it is still democratic and we’re polite.” Driutti says she sees people not appreciating what they have in Canada and it is time for people to take a look around. “We really need to think about how blessed we are with what we have,” she said. “I don’t think a lot of people get it. They take it for granted.” Canada’s 147th birthday was celebrated locally with a party at Beaver Creek Park. Birthday cake was cut and passed around, live music, displays from community groups, breakfast and lunch and ended with a fireworks display at Gyro Park. Warfield Pool also served up some cake on Tuesday afternoon with activities for kids to escape the heat.

WestJet plans still up in the air By Jim Sinclair Castlegar News
It was in the fall of 2012 with considerable fanfare that the highly successful WestJet airlines announced the imminent creation of regional service. Many people in and around Castlegar were hopeful their city/region would be included in the arrangement. To date there has been no positive announcement concerning the West Kootenay Regional Airport, but, for that matter, neither has there been a definitive denial. Delegations from many communities, including Castlegar, had made the trip to WestJet’s Calgary headquarters to state their cases in a short presentation. A handful of communities were then named as successful applicants for WestJet service. In B.C. those communities included Nanaimo and Penticton. Mayor Lawrence Chernoff has remained aware of the situation all along, and when contacted he agreed it has been kind of a non-issue for an extended period. He’s as keen on the prospect, however, as he ever was. It had been he, along with former MP Jim Gouk who had made the local pitch in Calgary, a pitch which had included the promise of some $300,000 worth of locally funded airport upgrades for safe use of the airport in a wider variety of weather conditions. “I’m expecting an announcement in July, to my understanding,” said the mayor. “It’s moved pretty slowly – they haven’t done a whole lot.” Multiple attempts to obtain information on this topic from WestJet, ahead of press deadline were unsuccessful.

School district to issue basic report cards By Sheri Regnier Times Staff
Parents of school-aged children and recent Grade 12 graduates in School District 20 will receive their child’s report card in the next few weeks, confirmed the district superintendent Friday. But the information will be basic, and only include an attendance record, grade promotion statement, or in some cases, a “standing granted” notation. The B.C. public teachers dispute had school districts scrambling to issue year end report cards after a full scale withdrawal of teaching services on June 17. Although methods of delivery vary depending on each school district, locally, simplified report cards will be issued to K-7 students the first week of July. By July 11, an attendance record, Semester One final marks, and available Semester Two grades will be issued for Grade 8-9 students. “Due to the ongoing ongoing labour dispute, we are unable to report in the usual manner,” said Greg Luterbach, SD20’s superintendent in a June 27 email to parents.. “Your child has been

given ‘standing granted’ or SG for all courses in which final marks have not been provided,” he explained. Since Grade 8 and 9 marks are not used for scholarship purposes or postsecondary entry, he noted there is no negative impact by the use of the standing granted mark. “The SG designates that the students will be advanced in those courses to the next grade level,” Luterbach said, adding that parents should contact the school if advancement to the next grade level in a specific course was “not appropriate.” The school district will email or mail report cards for Grades 10-12 by July 11, including students of J.L. Crowe Secondary, Kootenay Columbia Learning Centre (Trail campus and online learning centre) and Stanley Humphries Secondary. “Again, due to the ongoing labour dispute we are unable to report in the usual manner,” said Luterbach. The Labour Relations Board determined final marks for these grades are an essential service and teachers are required to provide the information for reporting to parents and post-secondary.
“This report card therefore provides attendance information and school based final marks only.” Those final grades will be released to the Ministry of Education, combined with provincial exam results, and made available for students’ graduating transcripts. “Ensuring that all graduation credits are documented, available for students transcripts and accessible by postsecondary institutions if requested,” Luterbach added. In a deal to end the strike, the province’s offer of a $1,200 signing bonus to members of the BC. Teachers’ Federation expired Monday. Class size, wages and support staff numbers are the key issues in the dispute. B.C.’s labour board ruled last week that teachers must hold summer classes for students in Grades 10 to 12 who failed courses during the year and can’t retake them in the next school year. The board has asked school districts to submit a list of courses and the number of educators needed to teach them to the teachers’ union by Wednesday. With files from Canadian Press

Nelson to apologize to the chief and council for the gaff, which the government reversed within 24 hours. She said she needed to show her government is serious about taking the small steps needed to build and strengthen important relationships that represent the glue of B.C.’s social, cultural and economic wellbeing, as her Liberals embark on developing an LNG industry, much of which is to be located near or on traditional aboriginal territories. “I wanted to sit down chief to chief with Sharleen Gale and really find a way through that,” Clark said. “It was a mistake government made. on whose traditional lands the legislature stands. Clark recently named Musqueam leader Wade Grant an adviser. She said she views Grant as her relationship guide, as the government moves towards economic and social agreements focused on LNG. “Wade is there to help make sure we can find our way to solution,” said Clark. “Relationships matter. We need to make sure we have a trusting relationship first and Wade is a part of doing that.” Development of LNG across B.C.’s north represents what Clark says is a huge economic opportunity for First Nations and the province, but she views industrial development as one of the key drivers of forging ties between aboriginals and nonaboriginals. The aboriginal community has supported Grant’s appointment, but leaders say there’s still much work to be done. “Sometimes I would say they are doing fairly well,” said chief treaty commissioner Sophie Pierre. “They want to include First Nations in decisions that are being made. Other times, they just kind of go and do things that don’t really support relationship building. “I believe they really would like to consult, and I think they really do understand that in order for this province to really benefit and to be able to move ahead, everyone’s got to benefit,” she said.

Voters reject city’s boundary expansion bid By Alistair Taylor Campbell River Mirror
No way! That’s what Area D voters said in defeating the City of Campbell River’s referendum on joining the municipality in order to extend sewer services to an adjacent section of the Strathcona Regional District. The no vote won the referendum with 589 votes while the yes side garnered 110 votes. The question put was: “Are you in favour of a boundary extension to include a portion of Electoral Area D within the boundaries of the City of Campbell River for the purpose of connecting to the City of Campbell River sanitary sewer service?” The issue has been ongoing for two years, since the city first proposed amalgamation with northern Area D in order to get those properties off septic systems. If the project went ahead, it would have cost Campbell River taxpayers an extra $24 a year in user fees for the next 20 years, in order to pay off a $3.9 million project debt. Area D residents would have been expecteded to pay $9,300, either in one lump sum or over the course of 20 years, likely starting in 2015. They would have had five years to connect to the city’s sewer system and pay an additional $1,800 connection fee. A third cost would be to connect their home to the sewer line, an amount that would vary from home to home. The vote brought to an end months of frustration from many Area D residents who have repeatedly asked the city to leave them alone, have shown no interest in joining the city.

Campers stranded THE CANADIAN PRESS SQUAMISH, B.C. - Crews are attempting to construct an emergency bridge to give safe passage to hundreds of campers stranded by a road washout near Squamish, B.C. About 250 people remain stuck after heavy rains several days ago stirred a torrent of mud and water over the weekend, rendering the Squamish Valley Forest Service Road impassable. Many people on the wrong side of the road had pitched tents for a music festival. They’ve been asked by authorities to share food and supplies while waiting for an impromptu roadway to be secured. New anti-spam law won’t put an end to unwanted emails, says legal expert

Group advocates guaranteed income THE CANADIAN PRESS MONTREAL - A group of academics and activists is trying to drum up interest in an ambitious plan to provide every Canadian with a guaranteed minimum level of income - whether or not they have a job. Rob Rainer, a campaign director for the Basic Income Canada Network, envisions a country where everyone is assured a minimum of $20,000 annually to make ends meet. “For many of us, we think the goal is no one should be living in poverty,” Rainer said at a conBriefs ference on the issue over the weekend at McGill University. More than 100 speakers and participants were on hand for the conference, which focused on the merits of a guaranteed minimum income that would either replace or exist alongside existing social programs. The idea is hardly new - the Canadian and Manitoba government conducted an experiment with the issue in the 1970s - but it has enjoyed a resurgence lately. Switzerland is expected to hold a nonbinding referendum this fall on whether to guarantee every citizen an annual income of Cdn $35,900. And in the United Sates, the idea has supporters on both sides of the political spectrum. Proponents on the left argue it represents an opportunity for greater redistribution of wealth, while those on the right see it as a chance to cut back on bureaucracy and return control to people’s lives.
THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA - A new anti-spam law that one business group calls “heavy handed” won’t stop the flow of all unwanted emails to your inbox, says a legal expert. The Canadian AntiSpam Legislation, known as CASL and came into force July 1, will require businesses to obtain consent for sending “commercial electronic messages” to clients or prospective customers. That’s why Canadians have seen their email accounts inundated recently with requests from companies and organizations that want to retain their contacts. “We’re updating our contact list in accordance with Canada’s new anti-spam legislation coming into effect July 1, 2014,” Faulhaber Communications has been telling subscribers to its service in recent email messages. “To continue receiving e-mails about our press launches, industry news and event invitations, we kindly request your consent below.” The messages contain the mailing address and name of the business, as well as a clear unsubscribe

Ford returns, apologizes THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - Toronto Mayor Rob Ford says seeking treatment for substance abuse was a life-saving decision. Speaking on his return to City Hall, Ford says he was in denial for a long time but blames no one but himself. He says he apologizes to the city and anyone he offended and says he’s embarrassed and ashamed by his behaviour. He says his commitment to “living clean is unwavering.” Ford left for rehab May 1 just hours after a newspaper said a drug dealer had shown its reporters a video of the mayor allegedly smoking what was said to be crack cocaine.

Many people - weary of emails seeking permission to keep sending emails - are saying enough already. “Getting spammed by Canada’s new antispam law emails,” computer programmer and artist T.J. Holowaychuk wrote Friday on Twitter. “The amount of spam I’m getting because of the spammers reacting to the new anti-spam law to reduce spam is worse than any spam I got before,” added University of Waterloo political science professor Emmett Macfarlane. Countless messages have gone out recently to people on an array of contact lists from organizations, companies and individuals who are on top of the change. Many firms are not prepared, says lawyer Andrew Aguilar with McMillan LLP of Vancouver, who cowrote a guidebook called “Internet Law Essentials: Canada’s Anti-Spam Law.” But those who fail to meet the deadline won’t face immediate punishment, Aguilar said. The fines can be
enormous - up to $1,000,000 for individuals and up to ten times that amount for companies found in violation of the law. Company directors can also be held personally liable for damages. And despite the legislation’s name, it’s about more than just spam. The law doesn’t define spam or mass messaging, but only refers to any message for a commercial purpose. “It really appies to a broad range of communications,” Aguilar said. Still, the law will be administered by the country’s telecom regulator, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission. And it has limited resources. While anyone will be able to complain to the CRTC about spam via a website - http:// fightspam.gc.ca - the regulator is expected to show flexibility as it sifts complaints, looking for the most egregious ones. “They may potentially do warnings or education first and then move their way up to what’s an administrative monetary penalty,” said Aguilar.

“I think this is going to be a pretty heavyhanded legislation,” CFIB vice-president Corinne Pohlmann said in a recent interview. “It’s going to take a lot of time before many small businesses are even aware that they have some obligations under this legislation and the regulations that go along with it.” The law prohibits any commercial electronic messages sent without the recipient’s permission, anything that results in an Internet user being sent to a different destination without their consent, and any installation of a software program without the consent of the owner of the computer. It also outlaws the use of any false or misleading representations to promote products or services and the collection of email addresses obtained through the use of computer programs without consent, known as address harvesting.

And it helps, says the CRTC, if companies perform due dilligence by putting policies in place that are in line with the law. Things may change in three years, however. That’s when what’s known as a “private right of action” kicks in, which would allow anyone to sue companies for transmitting excessive or unwanted electronic messages. “That’s the big fear (for businesses) at that point,” said Aguilar. “Right now it’s just the CRTC and I think they’re going to take a much more reasonable approach.” The Canadian Federation of Independent Business warned earlier this month that most small businesses are not ready for the law. The CFIB is telling its members to get consent from customers in an initial email message - even if they are existing clients - and then in subsequent messages as well, just to be on the safe side.

Life after the Tsilhqot’in decision
T
he Supreme Court of Canada’s landmark decision on aboriginal title held by the Tsilhqot’in Nation leaves many questions to be answered. Perhaps the biggest is this: Will British Columbia exist as we know it today by the end of this century? Or will it devolve into dozens of semi-autonomous regions, through treaties or similar court actions, as the only Canadian province that never completed historic treaties? The Tsilhqot’in decision appears to uphold the key finding of the 2007 trial, that 1,700 square kilometres of the Nemiah Valley west of Williams Lake are essentially owned by the people who occupied it hundreds if not thousands of years ago. It’s not quite ownership. Federal and provincial jurisdiction still applies, and their authority varies with the strength of the aboriginal title claim.
Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin ruled that the province overstepped its authority by issuing logging permits in the valley in 1983. McLachlin noted that lawyers for B.C. first argued that the logging was to control mountain pine beetle, then dropped that argument in its first appeal. She also upheld the decision of the trial judge, one-time NDP leadership contender David Vickers, who rejected B.C.’s position that the economic value of the timber to the province overrode the then-vaguely defined aboriginal title. Here’s McLachlin’s definition: “The nature of aboriginal title is that it confers on the group that holds it the exclusive right to decide how land is used and the right to benefit from those uses, subject to the restriction that the uses must be consistent with the group nature of

the interest and the enjoyment of the land by future generations.” That’s not land ownership in the fee-simple sense of the term. It locks in communal ownership, which I and many others have argued is at the root of the poverty seen in many aboriginal communities. Another big question: Is there any future for B.C.’s 20-year-old treaty process, or will this precedent-setting case send more First Nations to court, or to the barricades as the Tsilhqot’in did on a
logging road in 1983? One of the unique advantages that have emerged from the handful of modern treaties in B.C. is that aboriginal communities have more options in land ownership. By voluntary agreement, they can convert land to fee-simple ownership, making it available for mortgage or sale. Modern treaty holders also get out from under the federal Indian Act, which remains in force despite this latest decision. One of the big questions asked in the days after the Tsilhqot’in decision was this: Is the Northern Gateway pipeline project dead? None of the aboriginal communities along the pipeline route has this kind of declared aboriginal title. Few if any would have a similar strength of claim as the Tsilhqot’in, who fought a small war to defend their territory
from a wave of gold seekers in the 1860s. One that does is the Haida Nation, whose occupation of a beautiful group of islands was long defended militarily, and never challenged by any other aboriginal group. Among others, the Haida Nation was represented in the Tsilhqot’in case as interveners. Council of the Haida Nation president Peter Lantin said after the decision that his team is preparing its own aboriginal title case for trial. Few doubt that this assertion of title will be successful, either by negotiation or court ruling. But there is a unique aspect to the Haida claim that would set another precedent. They claim title to the ocean around Haida Gwaii, a challenge to anyone wishing to sail tankers through. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

The fourth installment in filmmaker Michael Bay’s morphing robots series earned $100 million in North America during its opening weekend, making it the biggest debut for a movie this year, according to studio estimates Sunday. The blockbuster outperformed “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and its $95 million inauguration in April. “Age of Extinction” also earned $201.3 million from 37 international territories,. “Age of Extinction” was distantly followed at the North American box office by “22 Jump Street” in second place with $15.4 million; “How To Train Your Dragon 2” in third place with $13.1 million; and “Think Like a Man Too” in fourth place with $10.4 million.

Island hosts reality show THE ASSOCIATED PRESS BRANFORD, Conn. - A new reality show is being filmed on one of Connecticut’s tiny Thimble Islands. A&E is filming a show called “Love Prison” on Beldon Island, one of 300 small islands off the coast of Branford. Beldon Island has just one house on just over an acre of land. The house will be home to social experiment involving couples who have an online relationship, but have never before met in person. They will spend a week together on the island.

Relay for Life needs better wheelchair accessibility
Gyro Park is a central, grassy, shady location rendering it a very nice place to hold Trail’s Relay for Life. A major targeted demographic for this event would be the cancer survivors themselves. At the beginning of the Relay for Life, the survivors commence by walking an honourary lap that is supposed to promote hope and good feelings. The problem is, though, at Gyro, half the track is sloped. I personally know many survivors that are in wheelchairs, or that need walkers to get around. How are they expected to participate in the walk when they can’t get themselves around the track?
I was told that people in wheelchairs could bypass the hill and cut across the grass. I have a few problems with that. First, my aunt Kim, who has been in a wheelchair for almost 30 years makes a point of counting out how many laps she can do by herself. Now, she is either cutting off half the lap, or she is needing to be pushed up and down the slope; neither of these things contributing to the feeling of independence that the Relay for Life once gave her. Second, have you ever pushed yourself across grass in a wheelchair? I have, and let me tell you that it is a very uncomfortable, exhausting experience. The notion that the committee
is expecting the cancer survivors, and other long-time participants to struggle at an event where they once thrived is just appalling. I realize there are many reasons the committee decided to have the Relay for Life at Gyro Park, and I could argue many of them, but I’ll leave it at that for now. I understand that those without physical disabilities don’t see the difference between Hayley Park and Gyro Park, but that’s why I felt that this letter needed to be written. I hope I have raised at least some awareness towards the harm being done by hosting the Relay for Life at Gyro Park. Kennady Keraiff Trail
Explain the benefits of a new bridge I would like to respond to the June 25 Trail Times article “Bridge referendum goes to voters in August” particularly comments from Mr. Cacchioni regarding the bridge referendum. I would like to point out to Mr. Cacchioni that if 200 people show up and the majority of people vote against the referendum that is democracy. I feel that the people that got together and collected signatures to force this referendum is truly and without doubt the best form of democracy we have.
It has been a proven fact that many councils preferred to do the reverse approval process because of the simple fact councils rely on voter apathy. Looking back at previous BC elections, voter turnout is generally low, and I believe this is a result of lack of consultation with the voters. The old bridge is something that I truly have always loved. I love the architecture, I love the history and I believe that it should have a second chance. However if the new pedestrian is going to be such an attraction and such a good thing
city council of Trail has got the responsibility to sell this project to the citizens, and give all the reasons how it is going to benefit our community. Questions that I would personally ask, is this going to help us become a tourist destination community? Do we have a tourism plan? Do we have a clear direction that we wish to go as a community and the downtown core? I do not believe that a new bridge is a bad idea, I just want to know why it is such a great idea for our community? Daniel Haley Trail
What unites Canadians?
THE CANADIAN PRESS MONTREAL - Two items often held up as cornerstones of Canadian values -- the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and universal health care -- are tops among things that help unite the country, according to respondents to a new poll. In the online survey, conducted ahead of Canada Day by Leger Marketing for the Association for Canadian Studies, respondents were asked to rank 11 items in terms of whether they help unite Canadians. The charter and health care placed well ahead other options, obtaining 25 per cent and 22 per cent of the first-place votes, respectively. Hockey and the country’s “shared history” placed a distant third and fourth, with 12 per
cent and 11 per cent of the first-place votes, respectively. Jack Jedwab, executive vice-president of the Association for Canadian Studies, said the findings present a portrait of a country that has gradually shifted over the last half-century. “It’s a different way to looking at Canada than, say, 50 years ago, prior to the existence of the charter,” Jedwab said. “And universal health care, since the 60s, has been a powerfully attractive element of what it keeps Canada united.” Fears about the threat of Americanization and Canada’s ties to the monarchy were given little significance - each chosen first by only two per cent of respondents.

He passed away on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at Columbia View Lodge.
He will be missed a great deal by his children Lynn, Ted (Mare), Shelley (Ed); grandchildren Patti (Shane), Jamie (Sabrina), Amy (Brandon), Aron (Sherry), Luke, Savannah, Sian; great-grand-
children Kayla, Jacob, Griffin, Everett; and many extended family members and friends. Ted was predeceased by Jackie, his loving wife of 62 years, in 2013. Ted was a chemical engineer with Teck Cominco for 39 years before his retirement in 1991. Ted was active in his community over the years as a city councillor, credit union board member, Esling Park board member, and little league coach. He was an avid
curler and did a stint as President of the BC Curling Assoc. Ted also loved to play bridge and poker, walk, golf, make wine, garden, travel, and spend time with family and friends at Christina Lake. Ted’s family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at Columbia View Lodge for all their compassionate care while Ted resided there. Services will be held at the Rossland Legion at 1:00pm on

one of the country’s top honours. The comedian is among the latest admissions and promotions in the Order of Canada, a list that includes renowned
filmmaker David Cronenberg and retired astronaut Chris Hadfield. Mercer, 44, said he got the unexpected call from Gov. Gen. David Johnston.
“Honestly, I was completely speechless. ... I really didn’t know what was happening. I’m not exactly sure what I said to him,” said Mercer, who becomes a member of the order. “I hope I said that I was humbled and thrilled. I was kind of in shock. It was not something I anticipated or imagined.” Mercer is the host of CBC’s Rick Mercer Report, and a champion of the anti-malaria Spread the Net campaign. He is the recipient of a Governor General’s Performing Arts Award and numerous Geminis. Cronenberg is being promoted to companion, the highest level within the order.
His most recent film, Maps to the Stars, was nominated for a Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival this year. His acclaimed movie Crash won the special jury prize there in 1996. Hadfield becomes an officer, the secondhighest level. His 2013 memoir, An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth, was a Canadian and a New York Times bestseller. Hadfield was the first Canadian commander of the International Space Station, at the end of an illustrious career with the Canadian Space Agency and the Canadian Armed Forces. Retired general John de Chastelain, the former chief of
the defence staff who played a key role in the prolonged Northern Ireland peace process, has also been promoted to companion, as was Dr. Richard Cruess, former dean of medicine at McGill University in Montreal. Among the 19 new officers are opera singer Gerald Finley and Harold Jennings, who was cited for his work on a pediatric vaccine against the most common form of meningitis. Shirley Marie Tilghman of Toronto and Princeton, N.J., has been made an officer in recognition of her contributions to molecular biology and for her efforts to champion women in science and engineering.

In Washington State American Legion AA Baseball, Brandon Zarikoff started a late-inning rally as the Trail AA Orioles managed a 3-3 tie with Colville in a rain-shortened match on Sunday at Butler Park. The AA Orioles tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning on a double from Brendan McKay before the skies opened up, ending the match as a tie, and cancelling the second game of the doubleheader on Sunday at Butler Park. The tie keeps the Orioles in the thick of the North Division playoff hunt.

Despite a good start, the Trail AM Ford Orioles missed out on the money this year at the Grand Forks International Baseball Tournament. The Orioles opened the tournament with a decisive 17-6 victory over the West Coast Guns out of Stockton, Calif. on Wednesday at James Donaldson Park in Grand Forks, however, a pair of losses to Pacific International League’s Everett Merchants and 2010 GFI champion Seattle Studs would send the Trail team packing. The Orioles were playing in arguably one of the toughest pools having to face the PIL-leading Everett Merchants and perennial favourite Seattle Studs. On Friday The Orioles hung in with
the Studs who were up just 9-6 after four innings, but a three-run fifth broke it open as Seattle would go onto a 14-9 victory. Chris Florko hit two doubles and went 4-for-5 at the plate for the O’s, while Joey Underwood was 4-for-6 and Kyle Mace and Josh Lowden went 3-for5 including back-to-back doubles in the ninth. Scott Davidson took the loss on the mound for the O’s. It was a must-win match for Trail when they played the Merchants Saturday morning, but the Merchants Jason Lotzer kept the Oriole hitters offbalance all night throwing a two-hitter over seven-and-two-thirds innings for a 10-2 Everett win. The Merchants led just 3-1 going into the seventh but a four-run outburst
would ice it for the Washington State crew. Darrin Kissock suffered the loss. In the playoff round Sunday the Thurston County Senators got by the Parkland White Sox 3-1, while the Seattle Studs shut out the North West Honkers 2-0. The Lacey Saints fell to the Burnaby Bulldogs 13-1, and Everett surprised the undefeated Langley Sr. Blaze 6-3. In Monday’s semifinal the Bulldogs scored two runs in the top of the ninth to break a 1-1 tie and down the Senators 3-1, while the Merchants broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the sixth to beat the Studs 4-2. The result of Monday’s final match between the Burnaby Bulldogs and Everett Merchants was unavailable at press time.
BCHL Bauer Showcase schedule set
By Times Staff The Trail Smoke Eaters will have a more seasonable start to their season with the opening of the Bauer BCHL Showcase at Prospera Centre in Chilliwack set for Sept. 19-21. The BCHL will start the 2014-15 season almost two full weeks later than last year with all 16 BCHL teams converging on the Fraser Valley
to play two games each that will count in the regular season standings. The first two Showcase events drew strong attendance from both NHL and NCAA scouts. The same is expected this time around. “The Showcase has proven to be a popular event for both the people looking for talent and also the teams and players,” said BCHL communications director Brent Mutis.

Cranbrook Daily Townsman Kootenay Ice forward Sam Reinhart became the highest selection of his siblings when he was drafted second overall by the Buffalo Sabres this past weekend at the NHL Draft in Philadelphia. There was a lot of drama leading up to the opening of the draft on Friday night, which featured the first round only, with a crop of four or five players that could’ve been chosen first overall. After Barrie Colts defenceman Aaron Ekblad was taken by the Florida Panthers, who held the opening selection, the Buffalo Sabres—led by GM Tim Murray—took the podium. Without much hesitation, he called out Reinhart’s name. The Kootenay Ice captain hugged his family members before heading up on stage and donning a Sabres cap and jersey for a photo op. “I’m ecstatic right now,” said Reinhart, in an interview with TSN. “This is the best moment of my life to be honest. Before the draft started, I was upstairs in the concourse, there was about 20 Buffalo fans that I was talking to and signing autographs, so I’m thrilled to be coming, I’m looking forward to it, and I want to get started right away.” Reinhart becomes the highest drafted member of his family, as Griffin went fourth overall (NY Islanders, 2012) and Max went 64th overall (Calgary Flames, 2010), while dad Paul Reinhart went 12th overall (Atlanta Flames, 1979). He also becomes the highest drafted member in Ice franchise history, breaking the previous record set by former goaltender Dan Blackburn, who was chosen 10th overall by the New York Rangers in 2001. Murray said the youngest member of the family was at the top of the Sabres list. “Watching him play, he rose to the occasion in big games, not just the World Juniors,” Murray said. “We got to see him lots out west, I think his team was supposed to lose in the first round to Calgary, and he just took them and beat them and he has the ability to be special and make the players around him really special.” It’s not inconceivable to think that Reinhart could stick in Buffalo next year, considering the Sabres are in the middle of a full-blown rebuild. “I know it’s a young team, I’ve pictured myself in that lineup quite a few times,” said Reinhart. “I’ve been very motivated over the last couple years to get in there, so I’m thrilled to be picked and I’m excited for the future.” Reinhart has a Kootenay Ice connection with fellow Sabres prospect Nathan Lieuwen, who made his NHL debut this past season and is currently with their AHL affiliate, the Rochester Americans. Following the first round on Friday night, NHL teams reconvened on Saturday morning at Wells Fargo Centre to finish off the rest of the draft. Three of Reinhart’s teammates with the Ice were also chosen by NHL teams, as D Rinat Valiev went 68th overall to the Toronto Maple Leafs; RW Jaedon Deschneau went 124th overall to the St. Louis Blues and D Tanner Faith went 139th overall to the Minnesota Wild. Four NHL-drafted members of the Kootenay Ice ties a franchise record, which was originally set in 1997.

THE CANADIAN PRESS MONTREAL - The Montreal Canadiens have traded veteran forward Daniel Briere to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for forward PierreAlexandre Parenteau and a fifth-round pick in 2015 draft. The 36-year-old Briere, who is heading into the final year of his contract, recorded 13 goals and 12 assists in 69 games with
the Canadiens last season. Parenteau, 31, had 14 goals and 19 assists with Colorado. The Gatineau, Que., native was selected 264th overall by the Anaheim Ducks at the 2001 NHL draft. Briere, who has also played for Phoenix, Buffalo, and Philadelphia, joined the Canadiens as a free agent on July 4, 2013.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - Every day, “The View” is one big happy family. Unless it isn’t. Friday’s edition of the ABC chat show found its three panelists - Whoopi Goldberg, Sherri Shepherd and Jenny McCarthy - predictably chipper, loquacious and sisterly, especially when they welcomed the show’s creator, Barbara Walters, for her first visit back since relinquishing her on-air role last month. But the happy mood was undercut, and even puzzling, for viewers who had learned just hours earlier that Shepherd and McCarthy are leaving the show, and not under especially happy circumstances: Shepherd is exiting after seven years since she and ABC failed to agree on a new contract, and McCarthy wasn’t being asked to renew her one-year contract, according to a person familiar with the situation who wasn’t authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. Friday’s show of unity was explained by the fact that, unlike most mornings, when “The View” airs live, this particular installment was pre-taped on Wednesday. Both Shepherd and McCarthy are expected to be on hand when the show resumes live broadcasts the week of July 7. Then they’ll make their official departure when the end-of-season hiatus starts a month later. In the meantime, a familiar guessing game Who will fill the vacancies? - should keep fans of the show busy.Since then, “The View” has shuttled through no fewer than 10 hosts besides Walters, who was one of the original foursome along with Meredith Vieira, Debbie Matenopoulos and Star Jones. Some of those panelists have left amicably and by choice, notably Vieira, who bid the show farewell in 2006 to become co-host of NBC’s “Today.” Others have created a bit of a stir on the way out. For instance, Jones revealed on a June 2006 airing of “The View” that her contract wasn’t being renewed, taking Walters by surprise with the timing of the disclosure. Jones was pulled off the air that day, which sparked a public war of words between the two women. It remains to be seen how quietly the latest pair of “View” expatriates will go.

Telecom giants MONday & Movies differ on local TV MONDAY EVENING
THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - Two of Canada’s biggest telecommunications companies, Bell and Rogers, are clashing over the future of local television and who should pay for it. In its submissions to the CRTC, Bell said it believes changes should be made by the regulator to allow local TV stations to be reclassified as “local specialty services.” The move, said Bell, which is owned by telecommunications giant BCE Inc. (TSX:BCE), would allow stations to charge broadcast distributors, such as cable companies and satellite TV firms, wholesale rates subject to existing must-carry rules. The money generated would be combined with advertising revenues and go towards supporting local television, it said. However, fellow telecom giant Rogers Communications (TSX:RCI.B) says it won’t support the plan for the new expenses, which it feels would likely filter down to the cable bills of customers. “We are trying to avoid what some of the other groups are doing, which is loading up consumers with a lot of new fees,” Ken Engelhart, senior vice-president of regulatory for Rogers, said in an interview. In addition to Bell, BCE owns 30 local television stations including the CTV network as well as 35 speciality channels. The company also provides TV service by satellite and through its Fibe TV offering. Rogers owns a smaller slate of 11 local TV stations under the City and OMNI banners. Bell said it supports pick-and-pay and believes Canadians “shouldn’t have to pay for channels they don’t want just to get the channels they do.” Shaw Communications said it wanted the CRTC to ensure that consumers aren’t forced to purchase certain high-cost services, like sports, as part of their basic cable packages. Telus (TSX:T) said it stands behind consumers having the option to choose which channels they want but that for consumers to benefit “those choices must be reasonably priced.” The disagreement came as the CRTC wrapped up a formal interventions process on Friday, part of its public consultations where it has collected comments from Canadians and the industry on the evolution of the broadcasting system.
