Jake Virtanen already had a Vancouver Canucks jersey with his name on it. But that one was bought from a store by his mom. But on Friday evening, the 17-year-old got a brand new jersey handed to him – on stage at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center by Canucks assistant general manager Laurence Gilman. Virtanen was Vancouver’s sixth overall pick in the NHL entry draft. It was an immensely exciting moment for a young man whose Aunt Kathy got him his first hockey jersey when he was four. Virtanen grew up cheering for the Canucks, wearing No. 19 during his minor hockey days, in honour of Vancouver great Markus Naslund. On Friday, he met another Canucks legend, team president Trevor Linden, and talked on national television about his future with the team. “It’s an amazing honour,” Virtanen said in an interview with TSN. “It’s surreal for me right now. I’m still trying to soak it in. It’s amazing. I can’t wait, and I know Vancouver’s a great organization. “I’m going to come to Vancouver and try to be a complete player. The ideas, thoughts and visions of Abbotsford residents will help shape a plan for the community’s future. As Abbotsford begins work on a new official community plan (OCP), the city is hoping residents will provide their feedback on a plan that will outline land use for the city, including where density will be focused, as well as where things like parks and trails will be placed. The 18- to 24-month process will include significant public engagement. A citizen advisory commission will be formed to provide advice
to council on the OCP update. Mark Neill, manager of community planning, said they will try to create a diverse ensemble of residents from around the city. Information on the project, as well as activities for kids, will be at the BerryBeat Festival on July 6 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Residents can also engage with the city through social media, such as on Twitter (@abbotsforward) or the city’s Facebook page. Applications for the committee can be found at city hall (32315 South Fraser Way) or at www.abbotsford.ca/committeeapplication and must be submitted by 4 p.m. on July 11. An Abbotsford man has been convicted of the sexual assault of a teenage girl. Anton Ellis Foulds, 37, was found guilty of the charge on June 19 in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster. A further charge of robbery in the same incident is still before the courts. A date for sentencing has not yet been scheduled. Foulds was arrested and charged on Feb. 7, 2013, two days after he approached a 17-yearold girl who was walking in the 33500 block of South Fraser Way at about 8 a.m. and directed her to a treed area next to an apartment complex. He then sexually assaulted her and allegedly attempted to rob her. The girl FOULDS contacted someone she knew, who then drove her to hospital and called police. She had suffered serious injuries. In April 2012, Abbotsford Police had warned the public that Foulds was being released from prison and that he had an extensive criminal history including sexual assault and multiple robberies. He was released from another province, after having served his full sentence, and was expected to move to Abbotsford. At the time, police said Foulds had 25 convictions, all in B.C. His last one was in Victoria in 2003 for robbery and the “heinous sexual assault” of a woman, according to police.

Remedial programs to be offered online The Abbotsford School District has cancelled summer school for all students save those in Grade 10, 11 and 12 who failed a course. A Labour Relations Board (LRB) ruling on June 27 deemed remedial summer school programs as an essential service. But that comprises only a small portion of the summer school offerings of the Abbotsford School District. With teachers vowing to picket all summer programs around the prov-
ince, the Abbotsford district has decided to cancel the session entirely. The remedial programs deemed essential by the LRB will be offered online through the Abbotsford Virtual School. Last year 1,674 students enrolled over the summer. The classes had originally been scheduled to start this week. The district also announced that students in grades between kindergarten and Grade 9 won’t receive re-
port cards until the strike ends. Grade 10 and 11 students will receive report cards by the end of July, the district says. The cards will only include final grades. Grade 12 report cards can be picked up at schools between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. until July 4. Report cards that go uncollected by July 11 will be mailed. In Mission, summer school had already been cancelled due to budget constraints, prior to teacher job action. That decision was made in May.

Indecent act arrest
Man allegedly exposes himself near playground the incident. A woman who was supervising children in a playground in the 33900 block of Pine Street saw a man apparently looking at the children while he was standing at the school fence. He allegedly touched and exposed himself, then left the area in a red vehicle for which
the licence plate was obtained. One officer went to the school, while another went to the home of the registered owner of the vehicle. A man matching the description provided by the witness was the sole occupant of a red vehicle that pulled into the driveway. He was arrested.
Police have recommended charged of committing an indecent act and indecent exposure. MacDonald said the complainant is commended for not only calling police when witnessing the incident, but for providing detailed information that led to the man’s quick arrest.

The operator of a school bus that caught fire Monday morning in Abbotsford has been charged under the Motor Vehicle Act. Charges include having no insurance and failing to complete a pre-vehicle inspection, according to the RCMP’s Fraser Valley Traffic Services. The bus was filled with 48 farm workers and was heading east on Highway 1 near the Mt. Lehman exit when its engine caught on fire at about 8 a.m. All the workers were safely evacuated from the vehicle.

One of the world’s best places
Canada celebrated its 147th birthday yesterday. This country now has a lengthy history as an independent nation. For most of the past 147 years, Canada has been respectful of other countries and of its wide variety of people, who come from widely disparate backgrounds and traditions. There are some significant exceptions, however, which must be stated up front. Canada has done a generally poor job in maintaining good relations with the aboriginal people who were here before any immigrants came from offshore. For the first 100 years of our independence, there were ongoing efforts to assimilate them, take away their land, unique cultures and heritage, and subjugate them. This was a holdover of the British approach to colonialism. It is only in recent years that more Canadians have started to appreciate the unique perspective that First Nations people bring to this country. Here in B.C., we have a wide variety of First Nations groups, most of whom have no treaties. The other blot on our history comes in the
treatment of Asians, particularly the Japanese during the Second World War. While there have been apologies and financial settlements, that aspect of our history is a shameful one – as were the tactics used to keep out prospective immigrants from China and India. However, what Canada does do well is to learn from our past mistakes. This country has always been a grouping of very different people. In 1867, it was the aboriginal people, and those of French and British background, including descendants of former Americans who disagreed with the American Revolution. Since that time, people have come to help populate the wide-open spaces in the country, and they have come from all over the world. In the past 50 years, the doors have been opened wider for people from all over. Together, these diverse peoples have forged a country respectful of religions, traditions and cultures; committed to fight injustices; economically strong and well-positioned — and one of the best places in the world to live. New ramifications to ‘It’s all our land’ Mark

Other Hand It’s been many years since I traversed the Nemiah Valley: the first with a hunting/fishing friend when returning from a Chilcotin country exploration that took us all the way out to Bella Coola; the second with my eldest son engaging in a similar adventure. From the hauntingly beautiful Choelquoit Lake, Tatlayoko bordered by coast mountains and spectacular Chilco Lake, its waters an incredible colour, we travelled through the Brittany Triangle (home of B.C.’s only true wild horses) to the Nemiah. The track we followed was rough and narrow, suitable only to the most intrepid. The grandeur of the scenery, the remoteness, and the isolation were truly remarkable. We encountered not another traveller on both trips – the land ‘was ours’ to enjoy. Today, that land is no longer ‘ours.’ Through the Supreme Court of Canada, the Nemiah band has been granted owner-
ship of all the lands described above plus more, encompassing in all some one million acres. Since the court decision was rendered, there’s been a lot of handwringing, but as one who has been there, and felt its importance to those who live there, it was a just decision. After all, the people who live there now descend from forebears who populated, gained sustenance and respected it for millennia. A few years after my travels through the area, Terry Glavin, with the help of band members, wrote “Nemiah, the Unconquered Country.” It wasn’t long before it joined the dozens of other B.C. books in my library, many relating to the Chilcotin country. Interestingly, the preface to the book contained the following, called The Nemiah Declaration, that begins: “Let it be known as of August 23, 1989: We, the Tsilhqot’in People of Xeni, known as the Nemiah Valley Indian Band, declare . . .” The statement went on to describe their lands, its uses and its restrictions to others. Twenty-five years later, those declarations are now law. In item 7 it notes “We are prepared to SHARE our (land) with non-natives . . .” though it does state permission will be
needed, permits to hunt and fish will be required, and respectful use of their lands will be encouraged subject to their system of permits. The land, some 1,750 square kilometres, is now legally recognized as being owned by the Nemiah people, just as my property is
... revenues from 94 per cent of the land mass of this province will flow to First Nations, not government... owned with all the rights of ownership relating to use, access and so forth. Will this allocation have a significant effect on the rest of what we now know as Crown land for the use of everyone who lives in British Columbia? Absolutely, because in the Nemiah, and anywhere else such legal designations declare “public lands” as being the ownership of resident aboriginal bands, all resources are now under their jurisdiction. Forest harvesting, mining – even the often overlooked but largely used ranging of beef
cattle – will become decisions between the native band owners and those who wish to log or mine, run cattle or hunt and fish. Any stumpage costs for cutting trees, mineral royalties, range fees, possibly even recreational licensing, presumably will flow to the lands’ owners – the First Nations bands – rather than into provincial coffers. If all of B.C.’s land claims are settled in a similar ownership way to that of the Nemiah, revenues from 94 per cent of the land mass of this province will flow to First Nations, not government coffers. That’s the potential to put a lot of financial strain on those who live on/in the remaining six per cent to fund education, health care, the social safety net, etc., because up until now most of us have reaped the benefit of natural resource revenues. The Supreme Court of Canada has sent a clear message that in future, consultation and accommodation must happen with First Nations. In the meantime, some 155,000 B.C. aboriginals are thrilled with future prospects, and the Nemiah band is justifiably proud and happy to have finally realized, through the highest court in the land, their right to ownership of their own land. markrushton@abbynews.com

Unionized health care workers have ratified a new five-year contract that brings B.C. closer to longterm labour peace in hospitals and care homes. The collective agreement reached earlier this month with 11 unions averted a possible strike by 47,000 health support workers, most of them represented by the Hospital Employees Union. It was approved by a 64.6 per cent vote in favour. The deal provides wage hikes of 5.5 per cent over five years and includes a cap on contracting out of 500 full-time equivalent positions. It also covers ambulance paramedics, with specific provisions related to their issues. HEU secretary-business manager Bonnie Pearson said the agreement provides some stability and certainty in a sector that’s been racked by privatization and restructuring. Union members had voted 96 per cent in favour of strike action in May. The agreement is within the limits of the province’s economic stability mandate, meaning health workers are eligible for further pay hikes if the province’s economy does better than forecast.

New murder trials set for next year

Aldergrove’s Davey Butorac, who won an appeal last year to have two murder convictions overturned, will be back in front of a jury in his new trial for the killings of two sex trade workers. It will be held in B.C. Supreme Court in March 2015. Twenty days have been set aside for the trial or trials. In October 2013, Butorac, 35, was granted new trials, after winning an appeal of his 2010 convictions in the killings of two women. He had been found guilty of murdering Gwendolyn Lawton, 46, of Abbotsford and Sheryl Koroll, 50, of Langley. Lawton’s body was found March 13, 2007 in a rural area of Abbotsford, while Koroll’s body was found dumped at a concrete plant in Langley City on July 7, 2007. The convictions were set aside by the B.C. Court of Appeal on the basis that the trial judge erred in accepting “the evidence of each murder as similar fact evidence with respect to the other.” Butorac’s lawyer had argued before the initial trial that evidence relating to the two murder counts should be separated. The judge disagreed. DNA of the victims found in Butorac’s car and on his shoe led to his original conviction. A motive was never made known. Butorac was sentenced to 23 years in prison for the mur-
ders. Details about how the trials will go ahead, and whether they will held separately but at the same time, aren’t currently known. Jury selection is planned for March 5, 2015 and the trial or trials are set to start March 23. At some point, Butorac will also go

Following the death of her husband of 35 years in the early 1980s, Gwen Gregorig decided she needed a hobby. She scanned through a pamphlet for what was then Fraser Valley College (now University of the Fraser Valley) and chose a course on car mechanics for women. Gregorig, who at the time was a realtor, took the program with her daughter-in-law, but it wasn’t really her thing so she browsed through the college options again. This time, a course on watercolour painting for beginners piqued her interest. She always had a talent for drawing, but had never painted before. She loved it instantly. “It must have been something that I was meant to do. I enjoyed it so much and I loved colour.” That course launched Gregorig, 95, into what

The Abbotsford-based group is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, with four of its original members still involved. The society got its start from the college courses, which were taught by gifted watercolour artist Gerry Thompson
starting in 1983. When Thompson moved away to Vancouver, there was no one to take her place. Gregorig missed the camaraderie of her fellow artists as they learned from one another and shared their love of painting. “I called them all and said, ‘Would you like to get together to paint?’” The group of about 24 artists soon began meeting in various loca-

tions, including a rented recreation room in a townhouse complex. The FVWS was formed in 1989 and became a registered non-profit society four years later. They were given the use of the art room at Abbotsford Senior Secondary, where they have continued to meet weekly over the years. They are planning a potential move to Mouat Secondary in the fall. The meetings include visits from guest artists – Thompson has returned a few times – and occasional presentations, demonstrations and workshops that are open to the public. Each year, the FVWS hosts a spring exhibition and sale at Clearbrook Library, featuring the work of its members. More than 100 pieces were displayed at this year’s show. Gregorig, who most enjoys painting landscapes and water scenes, said the group is about more than just painting. “For several of us, it’s been an anchor, a maker of friends, a stimulus and, I think, most of all, it helps you appreciate nature.” She said the group is taking a “major step” this year in introducing acrylic painting for the first time. “We feel we have to move with the times, and acrylics are being used more and more by artists, and I feel it is a step forward.” The FVWS meets Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Through the summer, the location is the House of Fine Art, 2485 West Railway St. For information, call Carol Portree at 604-850-9694.

A pair of University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) grads are taking a shot at reality TV glory, beginning in July. Siblings Sukhi and Jinder Atwal, who originally hail from Terrace and each spent four years at the Abbotsfordbased institution completing degrees in molecular biology, are one of 11 two-person teams competing on the second season of the Canadian edition of the popular program, which sees contestants race from destination to destination. The season premiere is July 8. “We feel like Abbotsford is our second home,” Jinder told The News. “It’s been crazy, just the outpouring of support that we’ve gotten, and a lot of people from Abbotsford as well.” The Atwals are no strangers to the travel involved in the Amazing Race – since graduating from UFV, they have lived in India, Thailand and Malaysia establishing businesses related to skin care products and functional health beverages. They were back home for Christmas last year when they applied for the Amazing Race Canada on a whim. “It was the last day to apply, two hours before the deadline,” Sukhi said with a chuckle. “We made one video, kind of an improv first take, and we got it in just minutes before the deadline.” The Atwals were selected and taped the show earlier this year, but they’re sworn to secrecy as to the results. The prize package for the winning team includes $250,000 cash, two Chevrolet Silverado pickup trucks, free flights for a year with Air Canada, and gas for life from Petro-Canada. “It’s the most motivating thing that I’ve ever heard – free gas for life,” Jinder said with a laugh. During their time at UFV, the Atwals lived in Mission Secondary football coach Kevin
Watrin’s basement suite, and they reached out to him for fitness pointers in advance of the Amazing Race taping. “He told us to take ice baths after every leg of the race,” Jinder said. “He’s been telling us how to sprint train, and we adopted some of his mantras – it’s 90 per cent mental, and the rest is in your head.” The Atwal siblings will be active on Twitter during the show’s run (their handles are @ SukhiAtwal2 and @jinderatwal) and will be answering questions after each episode.

Community Services (ACS). The program, funded by a $5,000 grant from CIBC, prepared the participants to become a janitor or janitorial assistant. It was offered through the Employment Mentors’ Program at Abbotsford Community Services and was open to immigrant women. The three-month program included presentations by guest speakers, workshops, training in the applicable skills, and practicum placements. The last time the program was offered was in 2009, and it is hoped that funding can be secured to offer it again. Some graduates of the program are now hoping to start their own businesses, while others will be hired by existing companies. Pat Christie, coordinator of the ACS Employment Mentors’ Program, said the participants came from challenging and difficult backgrounds. “If some of our population only went through some of the experiences and hoops that these women have endured, I believe we would be more humble human beings,” she said. Among those attending the luncheon were representatives from CIBC, The Co-operators and ACS. The graduates were: Harpreet Bains, Thoria Ali, Shehnajdeep Bath, Mery Dango, Laxmi Gujar, Harminder Hans, Gurmeet Jawanda, Manjinder Johal, Ramanjit Madaha, Ajak Kuot, Miriam Mutinda, Jaswinder Nigah and Baljit Padda.

Bradley promoted by Bruins Following the steps of current Canucks GM
Abbotsford’s Scott Bradley has taken another step up the Boston Bruins’ management ladder. Bradley was named assistant general manager of the Boston Bruins, the team announced Friday at the NHL Draft in Philadelphia. The move fills a vacancy created last month when the Vancouver Canucks hired Bradley’s predecessor, Jim Benning, as its new GM. Bradley had been the Bruins’ director of player personnel and brought the Stanley Cup to Abbotsford following the Bruins’ seven-game triumph in 2011. A two-time survivor of cancer, Bradley’s first stop with the Stanley Cup in 2011 was the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre, where he shared the Cup with patients.

The Abbotsford Cardinals are finding it can be difficult to turn a hit into a run. The Cardinals dropped three of four games over the weekend and continue to struggle to put runs on the board. That’s despite a good record of actually getting on base. “We seem to be outhitting all the teams that we play, we just fall a little bit short,” coach Corey Eckstein said. After shutting out their opponents in their three consecutive games last week, the Cardinals fell back to earth over the weekend. The Cardinals dropped both halves of a doubleheader Saturday to the Victoria Eagles, losing 4-2 and 2-0. The bats came alive in the Cardinals’ Sunday double bill against the Whalley Chiefs. The Cardinals downed the Chiefs 12-4 in the opener before losing a 7-6 squeaker in the second game. A lack of timely hits has haunted the Cardinals throughout the year, Eckstein said. With his team approaching a stretch that will see them play 19 games over just 20 days, Eckstein is hoping the bats start to sync up soon. “Our pitchers have been outstanding for the most part this year, giving us a chance to win,” he said. “It’s been timely hitting, not getting the right hit at the right time, not scoring runners that we have on base.” Eckstein said his team just has to focus when they come to the plate with men on. “It’s a matter of bearing down in pressure situations,” he said.

Rebels hold on for victory Abbotsford News
The Valley Rebels handed the league-leading Nanaimo Timbermen just their second loss of the West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association season Sunday in a game that spoke to the senior B lacrosse squad’s potential. Despite being forced to call up four Senior C players, the Rebels led for much of the game and held off a late Timbermen blitz to claim a 9-8 win and push their record above the .500 mark. “We worked hard,” coach Jim Nishiyama said. “We just played a smart game of lacrosse.” Playing in the friendly confines of MSA Arena, the Royals got a couple of goals from call-up Ryan Chan and regular Curtis Collard. Down by two with a minute to play, the Timbermen pulled their goalie and clawed a goal back. But the Rebels held their nerve and staved off a tying marker.
Despite an 8-7 record that has the Rebels sitting fourth in the league, Nishiyama has been disappointed in his team’s performance so far this year. “On paper we had the best team in the league by a country mile,” he said. But it’s been hard for the team to put the pieces together and unlock that potential. On Friday, the Rebels lost 8-4 to the secondplace Ladner Pioneers. “We just couldn’t score,” Nishiyama said. With just four games left in the regular season, Nishiyama hopes that Sunday’s win over the Timbermen will give the Rebels a needed boost heading into the playoffs. “They’re the best team in the league by far,” he said of the Timbermen. “We proved we can beat them.” The Rebels host the still-winless Langley Warriors Friday at MSA Arena. Game time is 8 p.m.

HARTLEY Stuart Nov. 12, 1970 ~ June 22, 2014
BAINES, Margaret Rose Ross (née Kleininger) Passed away peacefully with loved ones by her side at Jackman Manor in Aldergrove on June 26th 2014. She was born Nov 25th 1922 in Rockglen, Saskatchewan. She was predeceased by her husband Cpl Frank Ross, her parents Nick and Elizabeth Kleininger, her son Fraser Ross and her son-in-law David Rush. Mom is survived by daughters Heather Atwell, Lorna Jane Rush (Jo Wrench), Francene Groves (Ted), and Denise Nixon Graves (Mike). She was a loving Grandma to Michael Ross, Laura Brain (Steve), Angela Prichard (Anna Judge), Hayley Groves (Kurt Stoppler), Brittany Groves (Pavel Bakhilau), and Jesse Groves (Breanna Oleskiw) and Nana to Sierra, Kaiden, Elijah, Jaryn, Colby, Kai, Korbyn and Kenzey. She is also survived by her siblings Charles, Gladys, Betty, RoseMarie, Roy, and June. As a young widow she moved from Saskatchewan to Abbotsford where she raised her 5 children with the help of her Mom and Dad. When she wasn’t busy working at BC Tel or raising children, she enjoyed bridge, cross stitch, reading, word find books, and of course her baseball games. Shy by nature, her door was always open for family and friends and her loving and generous ways will live on in all of us. The family would like to thank all the staff at Jackman Manor for the wonderful care and loving attention given to Mom for the past 4 years. Funeral Service to be held Thursday July 3rd at 2 PM at St Joachim and Ann’s Catholic Church, 2827 273rd Street, Aldergrove, B.C.
Our dear Stuart passed away in Abbotsford, BC surrounded by his loving family and friends which included the loves of his life, wife Marni and son Conner, his Mum Mattie, brother Bill and sisters CarolAnne and Yvonne. He will be sorely missed by all his family and friends in Abbotsford, Edmonton and Calgary. Stuart loved his job with the City of Edmonton and his wife and son appreciate all the outpouring of support from his co-workers and staff. It was Stuart’s wish that there will not be a service but a Celebration of his Life will be held in Abbotsford and in Edmonton at a later date.

Alma Katherine Wiebe went Home to be with Her Lord and Saviour on Friday, June 27, 2014, in Abbotsford, BC. Alma was born on August 25, 1929, the third child of five, to Cornelius and Tina Gerbrandt. She leaves behind her devoted husband of 64 years, Ike Wiebe; daughters (Jean Wiebe), Denise (Carl) Huber, Karyn (Vern) Friesen, Melissa Hyland and Michele Carpenter (Richard); 11 grandchildren, Jason (Pamela), Gabriel (Amanda), Joel (Amy), Brandon (Devan), Jennifer (Chris), Jessica (Chris), Joshua, Elizabeth (Iswalh), Richard, Nico and Quinn; 17 great grandchildren; brother Johnny (Lorraine); sister Darlene (Brian); numerous relatives and friends. Alma was predeceased by two children Pat in 1971 and Robert in 2010. Thank you to the Menno Hospital staff for the excellent palliative care Alma received this past week. The Memorial Service will take place Saturday July 5, 2014 at 1:00 pm at Cedar Valley Mennonite Church, 8312 Cedar St., Mission with Pastor Dan Rempel officiating. Alma loved her Saviour, Jesus Christ and found comfort in scripture and prayer. She had many favorite passages that she had memorized throughout her life.
