Kimberley teachers walk the picket line C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
Kimberley teachers continue to walk the picket line, as negotiations between the B.C. Public Schools Employers Association and the B.C. Teachers Federation continue. This week, pickets are at all schools, but next week teachers won’t picket Selkirk Secondary. Teachers on the line at Selkirk Thursday said they didn’t want to put students in the position of having to cross picket lines when they write provincial exams next week. Provincial exams have been deemed an essential service by the Labour Relations Board and teachers are to assist in their administration as required. The LRB ordered that school districts must consult with teachers on the best way to ensure these requirements are met, whilst minimizing the number of staff needed by combining classes or holding exams in larger groups. The LRB has also said it will rule on the issue of the submission of marks for students in Grades 10 and 11 if an application is received. Teachers at the Selkirk line said they wouldn’t be overseeing exams as Selkirk administration had enough people to do so. As for continuing to picket after the official end of the school year, the teachers said that they hadn’t received instruction on that from the BCTF but they assumed they would stand down for the Selkirk Secondary teachers and CUPE support staff on the line at Selkirk Secondary Thursday. summer break. First Saturdays plan silent auction, Dusty Downhill C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
First Saturdays are well underway in Kimberley for 2014, with the next planned for July 5. The Kimberley Arts Council, which is the driving force behind the First Saturday events, is always looking for ways to raise a few more funds to provide even more in the way of entertainment. While grants applied for by the Arts Council cover some expenses, Carol Fergus from the Arts Council says a silent auction is planned for July 5, to raise fundsto help pay for musicians. “Musicians are the draw,” Fergus said. “It’s the excitement that helps draw people to the Platzl to see everything else that is going
on.” First Saturday volunteers are asking local businesses, and anyone else willing to donate, to provide some items for the auction. “The auction will be in the Platzl from 10 to 3:30,” Fergus said. “And there’s a Rotary pancake breakfast at 9.” If you have auction items for donation or want to help out in any way, call or email Carol Fergus 250-427-2258 or davecar@ telus.net or Kimberley Arts Council–Centre 64 at 250-427-4919 or kimberleyarts@telus.net The August First Saturday on August 2 will also have a fundraising element, this time organized by Jim Webster of the Kootenay Orienteering Club. planning the Dusty Downhill, a walk or run from the top of the ski hill to the Platzl. KAR will have the chairlift running for the morning to get you to the mountain top. Registration is $25 in advance, $30 on the day. This includes your lift ticket. Kids under 12 are $5, which will cover the cost of lunch. The hike from top of the mountain to the Platzl is 10 km, utilizing local trails, including the Peak to Platzl. The idea is to arrive at the Platzl in time for lunch and the start of the live music. All proceeds will be donated to the First Saturday cause. It all gets underway at 9 a.m. for the hike and 10 a.m. for those who wish to run.

Cranbrook hoping to get Innovation Technology Centre Arne Petryshen Townsman Staff
The City of Cranbrook is hoping to get an Innovative Technology Centre in town, though the province hasn’t put out much for details on the centres. The centres would be a resource to help develop innovative technology companies in the
area. Mayor Wayne Stetski noted that Premier Christy Clark spoke about establishing the centres in the province at a Union of British Columbia Municipalities meeting last year. Clark talked about establishing six centres at that time, but because Stetski hadn’t heard
anything more on the topic, he decided to send the premier a letter. Stetski said part of the city’s interest in having a centre comes from a year ago when the city, along with other local stakeholders, visited Taicang, China and Wonju, South Korea, to develop relationships with both
elected officials and businesses between the three cities. The trip included a tour of an Innovative Technology Centre in Taicang and an Agricultural Centre in Wonju. Stetski said both could be a potential model for an Innovative Technology Centre. “I sent a letter to the premier, concerning In-

Nelson Search and Rescue found Michael Mucha’s body at about 10 a.m. today. The exact cause of death is not being released, but police confirm foul play is not suspected. His family has been notified. Mucha went missing sometime early yesterday from his home on Highway 3A on the North Shore. He left all his personal belongings at home and appears to have walked off. Search and Rescue conducted a grid search behind his home up the mountainside and to the power lines late into the evening with no success.

Nature Park plans include trail renewal C AROLYN GRANT Bulletin Editor
Maintaining and improving the trails in one of Canada’s largest municipal parks is no easy task and the Kimberley Nature Park Society plans upgrades each year. A Trail Upgrades Committee has been struck within the Society and projects have been chosen for this summer. The most intensive project, which will likely not proceed if a CBT Communities Initiative grant does not come through to help pay for labour, is a reroute of SW Passage as it descends the SE flank of Bump Mountain and drops to-
wards Skid Road. This project will involve hundreds of meters of new trail and the decommissioning of hundreds more. The KNPS has decided that because of its size and remoteness, trail workers would have to be hired to complete it. There are other new trails planned as well. These include: a rerouting of Ponderosa and The Suicide Trails where they come together to make a less steep and eroding connection; a short new section at the western end of Summer Trail to prevent water erosion and eliminate a steep climb off the road; a re-
route at the east end of Coral Route to avoid the steep, eroding turn; and, a possible reroute on the rooty, steep part of Stump Trail, or, a partial rock armouring of it to prevent further erosion of the current trail bed. Other trails are slated for improvement through better sloping/ drainage. These include Pat Morrow, Richardson Sidehill and Skid Road. Further reclamation work will be done on past trail sections: Patterson’s Ridge and Cabin. The final tasks involve better closing off of short-cuts where bike/pedestrian travel
is not desired: bottom of Eimer’s Ridge trail and Rockslide Trail. Plans included volunteer week night work parties every second week and perhaps a few weekend work parties as well. Volunteers for these work parties are always welcome. Training will be provided, as will tools if you do not have your own. Gloves, sturdy footwear, appropriate clothing, bug repellent, water and snacks are all you need. Evening sessions usually last about two hours and beverages are provided afterwards. These are social events, good exercise

The man who abducted a three-year-old boy from his Sparwood home in 2011 is appealing his seven-year prison sentence. Randall Hopley was sentenced last November for the September 2011 kidnapping of Kienan Hebert from a second floor bedroom. After a four-day RCMP search for the child, Hopley returned Kienan unharmed to the family’s home. Hopley, declared a long-term offender, has a history of sexually abusing children, but Kienan was apparently not assaulted during

his time with his abductor. Hopley’s sentence includes six years and two months for Kienan’s abduction, plus an additional year for a number of break-ins at residences across the provincial boundary in Alberta. With credit for time already served, he still faces more than four years behind bars. Hopley was also sentenced to 10 years of mandatory supervision after his release — the maximum period under the longterm offender designation. A forensic psychiatrist told a sentencing hearing that Hopley is a “high risk” to reoffend if he’s released from prison.
Cranbrook police dog attacked in Canyon incident Creston Valley Advance
Creston RCMP are reporting an altercation between dogs in Canyon, near Creston, including the Cranbrook RCMP service dog. On June 9, police were called about an armed and possibly sui-
cidal male in Canyon. The response team included the service dog and its handler from Cranbrook. Before the search could start, the police dog was attacked by two other dogs. The dogs’ owner
was unwilling or unable to call off his animals and the handler shot and killed one of the attacking dogs. The search was then carried out successfully and the male suspect was taken to hospital for observation.
WildSafeBC has new community coordinator For the Townsman
WildSafeBC has a new face in the Kimberley/Cranbrook area. Sonja Seher has joined the WildSafeBC program as the local Community Coordinator. Following a weeklong training session in Kamloops Sonja is now about to launch a season of door-to-door campaigning, school programs, public displays and generally working with the public
to help “keep wildlife wild and our communities safe.” WildSafeBC has found that if wildlife is kept from becoming food-conditioned or habituated to the presence of humans, then they retain their natural wariness of humans and the potential for conflict can be greatly reduced. WildSafeBC provides conflict reduction advice for all types of wild-
life – everything from bears, coyotes, cougars, deer, raccoons and even rattlesnakes for those communities that have them. Sonja encourages residents to go to WildSafeBC’s interactive mapping program to see where, when and why wildlife has been seen in their neighbourhood. Two persons were arrested on Cranbrook Street N, on Tuesday June 17 for Trafficking in a Controlled Substance. Initially a 25 year old male from Edmonton was arrested a substance purportedly to be cocaine was seized. A few minutes later a 22 year old female from Cranbrook believed to be working with the male subject was arrested and 2 grams of white powder suspected to be cocaine was turned over to police. Both subjects were charged with Trafficking and appeared in Cranbrook Provincial Court on June 18. In order to be released they must post a $2500 bail which they have yet to do. This past week three persons have been sentenced for drug offences
that occurred in Cranbrook. Clinton Gravelle was convicted of Possession of a Controlled Substance stemming from an arrest July 11, 2013. He received 15 days in jail. Chris Bradford was arrested on Nov 27,
2012 after a search warrant was executed at his residence on 4th Street NW. and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking, he received 18 months jail.

We maybe can’t tell you all the great things the Kimberley Health Care Auxiliary does but we can tell you that after a nearly decade of gifts donated to East Kootenay Foundation for Health from KHCA those hard-earned dollars have helped to fund patient comforts and purchase essential pieces of medical equipment for the Kimberley Special Care
Home and the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. This week members of the KHCA presented a cheque of $15,000 to EKFH dedicated to the purchase of a Bi-Pap machine for the East Kootenay Regional Hospital emergency department. EKFH is also allocating $5,000 from its 2013 Starlite Campaign to the same purpose resulting in an overall gift of $20,000. A BiPap (Bi-Level Positive Air Pressure) machine is a small device that assists with a patient’s breathing. It is connected by flexible tubing to a face mask worn by a patient. The BiPap machine helps push air and oxygen into the lungs and then helps to hold the lungs inflated, allowing more oxygen to enter the lungs. A BiPap may be used to support breathing for a number of patient conditions including cardiac failure, respiratory distress syndrome, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or pneumonia. Doctor shortage requires community-wide response About 20 per cent of Cranbrook’s residents don’t have a family doctor; there are no easy answers, and the solution depends on the whole community’s approach Sally MacDonald Townsman Staff
Recruiting new family doctors to Cranbrook is a task that requires the whole community to participate, health care professionals are urging. Three people from the East Kootenay Division of Family Practice spoke at a Cranbrook and District Chamber of Commerce meeting on Wednesday, June 18 about efforts to fill vacant family doctor position in Cranbrook. Dr. Greg Andreas, a family physician at the F.W. Green Clinic, told the gathered business people that there are close to 4,000 people in Cranbrook who don’t have a family doctor. According to B.C. Stats, Cranbrook’s population is between 19,000 and 20,000 people, meaning that roughly 20 per cent of the city’s residents don’t have access to a family doctor. The shortage of family doctors affects the entire community, explained Jo Ann Lamb, lead for the A GP For Me Initiative by the Division of Family Practice. “There are impacts in many areas,” said Lamb. “Family physicians will continue to be overtaxed and their job satisfaction

may go down. People will continue to go without longitudinal care and relationship with a physician, so they have fragmented care. And there is an economic impact on a community that people may consider not coming to because there is not enough health care available to them.” Meanwhile, as reported in the Townsman on Monday, June 16, doctors in the hospital emergency department are also increasingly overtaxed as those orphaned patients are forced into the hospital for care, which is not ideal care for the patient. “We have complaints from other colleagues – quite rightly so – that they are being overused in the hospital,” said Dr. Andreas. “We understand that. A patient needs care; they are going to look for some way of obtaining that care. We have to support them in that. However, we also have to support them towards a better line of care.” The common suggestion of opening a walk-in clinic in Cranbrook would not solve the problem, Dr. Andreas went on. “A lot of people say, ‘Why don’t you just get a walk-in clinic?’ We need physicians for that walkin clinic,” he said. “(In existing clinics) we’ve got space; we need the physician to develop those relationships so (a patient) don’t have to go to emergency at two in the morning for something that has been troubling them for three or four weeks because they can’t get in to see the GPs who are stressed already.” Now, community partners in Cranbrook are putting their heads together to come up with ways to recruit GPs to fill at least five vacant positions.
Sentencing From page 3 James Muraro was arrested for Trafficking June 4, 2014 at which time police located 7 packages of cocaine on his person. On June 16, he plead guilty to the charge and was sentenced to 18 months jail. Our combined Cranbrook/Kimberley Drug Team continues to target those involved in the drug trade. Drugs often affect everyone in our community through other means including violence, thefts or assaults.
Cranbrook would welcome any new physician but it’s not that easy. Family doctors, along with representatives of the Chamber of Commerce, the College of the Rockies, Interior Health, the City of Cranbrook and the Regional District of East Kootenay, have formed a task force to work towards solving the doctor shortage. Recently, the group rolled out the red carpet for one physician from Canada’s east coast who is considering a move to Cranbrook. After speaking to local GPs, the physician was given a tour of Cranbrook by a city councillor, before meeting with business leaders at a special luncheon. There’s no word yet on whether the doctor has decided to move to Cranbrook. Lamb said that doctors move to a community for many reasons. “The fact is: physicians do not come to a community just to work. They come to a community to live and possibly raise a family,” said Lamb. “What’s important to physicians when they are relocating is: is there work for their spouse? Often that is the biggest barrier to somebody coming to a community; if their spouse cannot find work then they will look elsewhere. Schools are very important, and other amenities, recreation etcetera, in the community are very important to their decision on where they will go.” Dr. Andreas added that providing work-life balance for a physician often means they stay for a long time. “If the partner is happy, the children are happy, and the balance of life is good, the person is ours. If we can get someone here and they
are happy, we’ve got someone who is often here for 20, 30 years. That’s an incredible contribution to the community medically.” Cranbrook is far from the only community experiencing a doctor shortage, and we are competing with other communities around the world to recruit family physicians. “It’s a human resource issue for the whole world. We are in competition with Australia, we are in competition with the United States, and we are in competition with other towns in Canada and British Columbia. So we just have to get used to that. Our patients are basically vying for the medical attention of physicians from just about anywhere else in the world,” said Dr. Andreas. Lamb said that there is a cash bonus for physicians who decide to move to Cranbrook. But other communities have larger incentives. “One community built a house for physicians to live in. Sometimes the community puts together a cash incentive,” she said. So making the physician feel welcome and fulfilled here is vital, she went on. “What is most important we feel is that the physician finds the right fit for them, in not only the work but in the community. That way they will stay.” Dr. Andreas called on the entire Cranbrook community to come together to entice physicians into the area. “If you have a contact, talk up Cranbrook. Tell them about the fantastic skiing. Tell them about the fantastic golfing,
trout fishing. Invite them out. Any of the clinics that have space in them would be only happy to tell them about the business plan in each clinic,” he said. “If we can approach someone and say, ‘This is what the physicians are doing, and this is what the community is busy doing,’ the physician’s lights go on. I can only see that happening for people who want to move here if we can say it’s a dynamic situation with the medical and wellness of the community. Because we can provide medical care; you guys contribute significantly to the overall wellness of the community.” As well as efforts to bring new doctors to Cranbrook, the GP For Me program is working on long-term plans to avoid landing in the same situation again in the future. “We need to look after what’s going on now but we also need to develop that strategy that will allow us not to find ourselves in this position,” said Lamb. Patti Phillips, coordinator of the Division of Family Practice, said one initiative is bringing Interior Health nurses into local medical clinics to work side by side with a family doctor. “Some of you may have experienced some appointments where you have spent the majority of the time with the nurse and the last little bit of time with the physician. The nurse does a lot of the follow-up,” said Phillips. “It not only frees up the physician but it really offers more comprehensive care.”

Teachers, BCPSEA stalemate From Page 1 On Thursday, June 19, Minister of Education Peter Fassbender told a press conference that after the BCPSEA tabled what he called “an affordable, creative and comprehensive package to end the stalemate”, the two sides were farther apart than ever. ““The comprehensive package is fully in line with the wage increases and affordable agreements already reached by nearly 150,000 public sector workers,” Fassbender said. “It was not tabled lightly. It was made clear to the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation that we put our best possible offer on the table and it was aimed at concluding this round of bargaining. “On Wednesday, the BCTF presented their full set of demands. They filled in their blanks and clarified their positions. And instead of moving us closer, their latest demands moved them further away from the affordability zone for public sector settlements. “Their wage and benefit demands alone are more than twice what other unions have settled for. On top of that, they are pushing for hundreds of millions more each year in other

contract demands. “I’m disappointed. We are now further away from an agreement than we were a week ago. We want to give teachers a raise but the BCTF leadership is making that virtually impossible. “What BCPSEA has offered is already at the very limit of what we can afford. We cannot split the difference. Our government has a fundamental commitment to balance the budget and we have an obligation to deal fairly with all 300,000 B.C. public sector workers.” The BCTF, in response to what they call “stonewalling” by the employer, is calling on Premier Christy Clark to agree to mediation. “BC teachers have put forward a fair and reasonable framework for a deal that would see improved learning conditions for students on the first school day in September,” BCTF President Jim Iker said Thursday. “However, two more days of bargaining have gone by with no progress or counter offers from government and BCPSEA. At this point, the best way to get that deal that works for BC’s public education system is through mediation. Christy Clark should say yes to mediation today.”

A most expensive lining indeed It was the last thing they expected to find. In 2011, German textile conservators were given permission to examine dresses made by Cistercian nuns from Wienhausen during the Middle Ages. These dresses — made of rabbit fur, silk, linen, and velvet — weren’t for the nuns themselves, but to adorn the statues which surrounded the Wienhausen Abbey. Besides the fact that these dresses have survived for centuries, the conservators were most interested in learning how the nuns were able to achieve the drapery-like folds. Finally being able to handle and examine the dresses, the conservators were shocked to find that the nuns had used an extremely unique and unguessed at thickening agent to achieve the esthetic folds: Books. In this ultimate recycling move, the nuns had ripped apart 13th century manuscripts (gasp), using the parchment to line the hems of the dresses. The books in question have been identified as devo-
tional and legal texts — exactly what one would expect to find in an Abbey. The parchment (scraped animal skin) used for books appears to have made an excellent support for the dresses, while the dresses themselves have helped protect these still readable scraps of history. While the conservators had not expected to find reading material, their find is not the first. The University of Copenhagen manuscript library Mike Selby holds a medieval Catholic Bishop’s hat, which was made from pages torn out of a book from 1270. It does not appear that anyone bothered to read the poem (a Norwegian translation of Old French), as it describes in detail two oversexed individuals chasing each other through the dark, while a bunch of knights hack away at each other over a field of naked virgins. The poor Bishop. The ‘Sturlunga Saga’ — a collection of Icelandic clan sagas — has come down to us from the pages of a manuscript from 1375, which only survives as it was cut up into a vest pattern for seamstresses.

As great as manuscript parchment may have been for these uses in clothing, it is hard to conclude just why they were used in this fashion. Books were hardly common place in medieval times, and they certainly weren’t cheap. Constant religious upheavals may have rendered certain texts obsolete, but these could have been easily erased and reused (considering a single book needed between 100 and 400 separate animal hides). The Cistercian nuns may provide some answers, as they were unique amongst European convents. The Wienhausen Abbey itself was more like an art gallery, decorated with vivid artwork, colourful stained glass, and intricate metalwork. The nuns themselves were also uncommon, being highly educated and hailing from the wealthiest and most powerful families of Germany. If the nuns had enough time and resources to start dressing the statues of all things, ripping apart a boring old book may have seemed like an ordinary thing to do. Bible offers a bigger kind of truth What’s Up?
T
wo weeks ago, I offered four good reasons not to read the Bible literally. Granted, there are some who think that reading it literally is the only way to take the Bible seriously. Let me provide an alternative way of thinking about it. Bible scholar John Dominic Crossan puts it very provocatively: “My point is not that ancient people told literal stories and we are now smart enough to take them symbolically, but that they told them symbolically and we are now dumb enough to take them literally.” He’s not alone in his point of view; many other mainstream scholars agree. Part of the historical background has to do with a radical shift that took place about 350 years ago in the way we think about “truth” and “facts”. We call this the Enlightenment, which saw the rise of the scientific method. Only those facts which could be verified by human reason and observation would be considered true. Leading thinkers distinguished between “values” and “facts”. Values were things one may believe but can’t prove, while facts were things one can prove. For these early modernists, both values and facts represented claims about truth, but it was like comparing apples and oranges. They were different categories of truth. Over time, the scientific method won the day; it wasn’t long until truth was associated almost exclusively with facts which could be proven. The preference for facts over values created a crisis for many religious traditions. Biblical scholars came to realize that ancient Biblical ways of understanding the
world could not withstand scientific scrutiny. For example, the world was not created in six literal days; the sun does not revolve around the earth; heaven is not “up”. The Bible does not provide historical and scientific information as we understand it today. This crisis led to a great schism in Christianity, each side assuming that truth is equated unequivocally with facts. Liberal scholars concluded that because the Bible was not factually accurate, it was not true. On the other hand, conservatives asserted that since the Bible was obviously true, therefore it must be factually accurate. So they wrote massive tomes trying to defend the factual truth of the Bible. Rev. Yme Both sides miss the Woensdregt point. The Bible is not a science or history book. It is a library of different types of literature whose purpose is not to prove anything, but to persuade people of the truth. Let me give two examples. At the beginning of Luke’s gospel, the author says that he is not an eye–witness to the events he recounts; he depends on multiple other stories about Jesus. He writes “an orderly account” so that his audience may believe and trust the teaching they have received (Luke 1:1–4). Similarly, John comes clean at the end of his gospel that he has carefully arranged stories of Jesus so as to persuade his readers that Jesus is the messiah (John 20:30–31). The gospels do not seek to prove; their purpose is to persuade. This is true of the whole of Scripture. The Bible seeks to persuade people of the truth of its witness. It is not filled with scientific or historical facts. It is a collection of poems, letters, songs,
stories, gospels which are written as testimony, witness, confession, and even propaganda. Does it contain some reliable historical information? Of course. There is little doubt of that. But this information is intended not to make a logical argument but rather to persuade people of a larger “truth” that cannot be proved in a laboratory but is finally accepted or not accepted based on its ability to offer a compelling vision about the meaning and purpose of the world—God and humanity, and everything in between. I think that kind of truth is much bigger, even more important, than facts. Don’t get me wrong—I’m all for facts when it comes to doing my taxes, fixing my car, or boiling water, but when it comes to the things that mean the most to me, facts fall a little short. When it comes to things like the meaning of life, the power of love, the importance of faith, and such things—we simply can’t “prove” any of it. When it comes to the things that really matter to us—those things we call True (with a capital T), facts aren’t enough. Those things are about how the story has an impact on our lives, and we simply cannot dissect that in a laboratory or prove it for someone else. All we can do is witness to the truth that we experience. And that is the kind of truth that I think the Bible offers us. Does it help us make sense of our lives? Does it help us know the world a little more deeply? Does it help me discern how God might be involved in the world and in our lives? 1898 Traveller … Dr. Brodie and his grey steed are coming to be very familiar objects throughout a considerable stretch of country each side of Cranbrook. Horse Race … There was a bit of a horse race for amusement on the lower part of the town site Saturday, between McMullin’s buckskin Recordbuster and Contractor Neill’s bay Neverwasbeat. Jockeys Baker and Miner were the mounts, and rode to win, but the buckskin was out of it at all stages of the game. Some of the boys say that Miner threw the race with the idea of arranging one for a large purse in the near future. Close Shave … You can’t go to Morrow to be shaved today, or at any time in the near future. That is to say, in a straightforward way, that Sam Morrow, the original, and for a time the only hair harvester in Cranbrook, has disposed of his business to Messrs. Victor & Clark, two highly accomplished tonsorial artists. The former is a Frenchman and the latter a coloured gentleman, and what such a combination don’t know about hairdressing and shaving can’t be learned. The gentlemen report business very satisfactory. Lot of Trouble … Last week a hustling, rustling, bustling French gentleman, elderly in years but youthful in demeanour, appeared on the scene, ordered some lumber
and commenced the erection of a structure opposite the McMullin Cafe. He had been to V. Hyde Baker previously and selected the lot, saying he would take it, but as he had neglected the slight formality of making a payment of any kind on the property before starting his building, the agent was obliged to tell him to jar loose or ante up. He said he had deposited money some time ago with some C. P. R. agent for a Cranbrook lot, and that he had supposed Mr. Baker knew about it. The gentleman is investigating. Ouch! … A. McDonald met with a painful accident this week. He was assisting in throwing a horse, and got kicked in the mouth. He was smoking a pipe at the time, and the stem was driven through the roof of his mouth into his nose. He pulled the pipe out himself, and strange to say experienced no pain or inconvenience from the wound since it was inflicted. Moyie Tunnel … When daylight was pulled through a hole in the face of the big tunnel last week, near Moyie, a barrel of inspiration was opened in honour of the event. It seems that the liquid was of the kind which tends to put some people in an argumentative frame of mind, and the result was that Tim Moriarity or some other son of Erin, smashed Antonetti Spaghietti (a descendant of a noble and ancient Roman family) on the head with a stone and, as it were, rocked him to sleep for a time. Dr. Brodie was summoned to care for the wounded man, but found nothing very serious to contend with and a mounted policeman took the Celt to Fort Steele to partake of a prescription composed principally of seclusion and a plain diet in the bastille.
1899 Football … Cranbrook 2; Fort Steele 1; this was the tale after one and one-half hours interesting play. The game was very warmly contested and at times very brilliant play was indulged in. Still, lack of practice and training was visible in the play of both teams. Steele’s back division saved them time and again, and although their forwards played good ball, individually, they lacked the combination that characterized the rushes of Cranbrook’s line; indeed it is to the brilliant play of her forwards and the excellent judgment shown by Geo. Leitch at full-back, that Cranbrook owes the victory. Court Cases … Joseph Ayette, charged with entering the Cranbrook Hotel with an intense desire to purloin a ten from the money drawer, was discharged. Magistrate Armstrong thought the evidence was too light. Also, Joseph Fortin was brought before Magistrate Armstrong on the delectable charge of “rolling a chum”, which properly translated, means that he was supposed to be guilty of copping the dough from a bosom friend. As the gentleman whom he rolled failed to appear, the court told Fortin to take a walk. Runaway … Last Friday a team belonging to M. McInnes & Co. got frightened while standing at the Freight Shed, and took a lively turn about town, finally landing on the porch of the Commercial Hotel. One of the porch posts was knocked off, carrying with it a big lamp. Several cases of eggs were scattered along the street, and the contents seemed to be badly broken up over the affair.

LOS ANGELES - Seeing his best friend only one out away from pitching a no-hitter, A.J. Ellis got a bit teary eyed. Not that Ellis could get too emotional, though. The Dodgers catcher still had to call the pitches for Clayton Kershaw to finish off the gem. Kershaw added to his most remarkable resume Wednesday night, throwing his first no-hitter and striking out a career-high 15 as Los Angeles beat Colorado 8-0. Only one batter got on base against Kershaw - Corey Dickerson reached on a throwing error by shortstop Hanley Ramirez leading off the seventh inning. Ker-
shaw struck out a swinging Dickerson to end the game. “I guess I haven’t really thought of the ramifications of throwing one of these things, but it it’s definitely special company,” Kershaw said. “I don’t take for granted the history of this, or what it means. I definitely understand all that. But as far as individually, it’s right up there with winning playoff games and all that stuff. It’s pretty cool,” he said. The 26-year-old lefty with the big-bending curveball, two Cy Young Awards, three ERA titles and a pair of strikeout crowns shut down a pretty good team, too. The Rockies began
the night leading the majors in batting average, hits and on-base percentage, and topped the NL in runs and homers. “I started tearing up out there in the ninth inning, just sitting out there catching and watching him throw after he got those first two outs,” Ellis said. “To do it here at Dodger Stadium and do it with my best friend on the mound means the world to me. It’s a game I’ll watch on replays with my kids forever,” he said. Kershaw thrust his arms overhead after fanning Dickerson for the final out. He was mobbed by his teammates and joined on the field by wife Ellen for several hugs.
Carolina Hurricanes hire new head coach ASSOCIATED PRESS
RALEIGH, N.C. - The Carolina Hurricanes have hired Detroit Red Wings assistant Bill Peters as their new coach. The team announced Peters’ hiring Thursday and said he would be introduced Friday during a news conference. It’s the first big hire for new general manager
Ron Francis, who took over in April during a reshuffling of the organization. The 48-year-old Peters spent the past three years working primarily with the Red Wings’ defencemen and penalty-killers. The hiring wraps up a 46-day search for the successor to Kirk Muller,
who was fired May 5 after going 80-80-27 in three seasons. Since the Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup in 2006, they have made only one playoff appearance - in 2009. Francis fired Muller one week after the Hockey Hall of Fame player moved up a rung on the organization’s ladder and took over as GM.

DENVER - The Colorado Avalanche could be wearing out the red carpet at the NHL awards show next week with all the players they have up for honours. Semyon Varlamov is in the running for top goalie, Nathan MacKinnon up for best rookie and Ryan O’Reilly a candidate for sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct. Coach Patrick Roy also could be recognized for his work behind the bench. It was just that kind of season for the surprising Avalanche, who tied a franchise record with 52 wins as they returned to the post-season after a three-year absence. The attention now - with the nominations and all - is “exciting,” Roy said. The attention they’re sure to draw come next season? Local martial artists qualify for worldwide tournament Tre vor Cr awley Sports Editor
Local taekwondo martial artists have qualified for the World Martial Arts Games after returning with some impressive results at a tournament in Shuswap earlier in June. Quinn Robertson and Dallas Wiebe captured medals in forms and point sparring, while Dan McGifford and Simon Wachon also won some hardware. Representing Evolution Martial Arts out of Cranbrook, the four will head to the Richmond Olympic Oval in September for the world event. Quinn, 15, won a bronze medal in forms, and took a silver in points sparring junior division final where he faced his 16-year-old teammate Dallas Wiebe. Wiebe won the gold in that final, and also came out with the same result point sparring after stepping up to the adult division. McGifford and Wachon previously qualified for the world games at a tournament earlier this year in Calgary, with McGifford winning gold in advanced heavyweight and Wachon winning silver in men’s black belt sparring and bronze in forms. Robertson got the medal count started for the club, winning bronze in the forms in the junior grade division. Both Robertson and Wiebe then battled their way through the ranks in the junior
point sparring category, until they met in the final. “It was an epic battle, spirited but respectfully fought, but in the end, Dallas ended up tipping the scales on his teammate by just one point in extra time,” said Wachon. After battling in juniors, the two martial artists—which have experience sparring with older opponents in their home club— stepped up into the adult division, and went on to have some success. Once again, both ploughed through the competition, until meeting each other again in order to advance. Wiebe was once again the victor, which put Robertson into third place. Wiebe headed into the final and sparred against a heavier adult, but ended up coming out with the win. Their results, coupled with that of McGifford and Wachon, have qualified them for the world martial arts games, which will be an official IOC-sanctioned event for the first time, as the sport hopes to eventually get included into the Olympic program. Now the work begins as all four Evolution Martial Arts members will start training and preparing to meet the best the world has to offer at the event. The four are also working hard to raise

SAO PAULO, Brazil Luis Suarez scored twice to give Uruguay a 2-1 victory over England at the World Cup on Thursday, making an instant impact on his return from injury to revive his team’s Group D campaign. The Liverpool striker, who hadn’t played since undergoing surgery on his left knee last month, lashed in the winner in the 85th minute, after seeing his first-half opener cancelled out by Wayne Rooney. After surprisingly losing its Group D opener to Costa Rica, Uruguay’s qualifying chances have now been given a major lift, while England’s hopes of advancing to the round of 16 are in real jeopardy after its worst World Cup start in more than half a century. Suarez seemed to revel in inflicting England’s second successive loss in Brazil, having been punished twice by the country’s Football Association for misdemeanours, serving bans for racism and biting in the Premier League. Of Uruguay’s six efforts on target, five were from Suarez - including the two that beat goalkeeper Joe Hart as England’s slack defending was exploited.
“I dreamt this,” Suarez said at the Itaquerao Stadium in Sao Paulo. “I’m enjoying this moment, because of all I suffered, the criticism I received. The Alberta government says as many as 500 homes have experienced some sort of flooding because of heavy rains in the southwestern part of the province. But there was good news Thursday — forecasters say the storm that has soaked the area for most of the week was weakening. “At this point, the storm is basically petering out,’’ Evan Friesenhan, director of river forecasting for Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resources Development, said Thursday. “It’s now where we watch the impacts and the flood peaks begin to occur and the wave.’’ On the Blood reserve, about 200 kilometres south of Calgary, 130 homes have flooded and 350 people were forced to leave. Reserve spokesman Rick Tail Feathers said “a wicked amount of rain’’ fell, but there was hope things would get better soon. “Hopefully it’s going to start to recede, but it’s left quite a bit of damage in its wake,’’ said Tail Feathers. “There’s a number of houses with flooded basements. Some of the roads were impassable because there was overland flooding over the road. It’s still a state of emergency, however ... the rain’s going to eventually stop today, so that’s good.’’ In Lethbridge, 300 homes have been damaged, most due to sewer backups. In Claresholm, a town of 3,800 about 130 kilometres south of Calgary, as many as 40 homes have damaged by rainwater that overwhelmed sewer systems. “We are still consid-

I was visiting Ireland and I stayed at a bed and breakfast, which was quite nice and looked authentic. On the second night of my stay I felt this hand touch the side of my cheek when I was sleeping. I woke up and the room felt cold and I had this overwhelming feeling of loneliness sink into my body. Suddenly, as fast as this happened the room felt warm again and I fell back to sleep.
When I woke up in the morning I asked the person who owned the bed and breakfast and she smiled and said, “Oh that’s our boy Owen, he comes around every so often.” I didn’t question her further because she walked away and it seemed to me she did not want to talk about it anymore. I can’t seem to shake this feeling of the loneliness that I felt in the

Here’s what happened when you were sleeping at the bed and breakfast in Ireland. I checked with my guides and we do believe the owner. There are a few resident ghosts living at this particular bed and breakfast you named in your email. This entity you call Owen has definitely not followed you back to Canada. He is still walk-
ing the halls of the bed and breakfast in Ireland. The entity was in the room when you were asleep. He did touch your face and he is probably feeling lonely, being on this plane. What you are feeling is the residue of the essence of this entity’s energy. This residue of loneliness from this entity will eventually disappear in about two weeks maybe less. This sometimes can happen if the entity has strong energy. This in no way is a form of possession — it’s just residue and I feel if you say a prayer and talk to your angels it will disappear rather quickly. Always remember before going to sleep each night to creatively visualize and draw a circle of white light around you. Then say these words, “I ask the white light of the Holy Spirit to protect me while I am sleeping.” If you have a hard time visualizing this
then stand in front of a full-length mirror, take your finger and imagine white light coming from your finger and draw a circle around your body and say the words. If you can’t see it but you can feel the white light while you are doing this exercise it will still work. Let me know if you have any further problems. Wendy Hi Wendy: I have been talking to this man on the internet for some time and he asked me if we should meet at a location that is convenient for both of us. I have some trepidation about this encounter and I don’t know why. I read your column all the time and was wondering if you could do one of your “specs” on this man for me. did a spec on him at your request and this is what we have discovered: He is an alcoholic and a verbal abuser. He is with another woman at this time and we see two children are around him. We do not feel that these children are around him all the time. We feel that he definitely cheats on the women he has had intimate relationships with. He is not ready to settle down and commit to one woman at this time. Your gut feeling was correct and we would recommend that you check this man out thoroughly before you meet with him. Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My husband of four years insists on keeping a picture of his cat as the screensaver on his cellphone. Occasionally, he’ll switch it out for a photo of one of his kids, but the cat always comes back as the “top dog.” It’s never a picture of me. “Fluffy” also enjoys the top priority in other areas of our life. For instance, the day I had major surgery, my husband dropped me off at the front door of the hospital and then took Fluffy to the vet and spent the day with her. I am not ranting about some minor grievance. I was in surgery for seven hours, so this was serious. The cat gets better treatment than I do and a lot more affection. If it weren’t for my allergies, Fluffy would be sleeping with us. Even so, I’ve awakened to find the cat’s rear end next to my face. I find this disgusting. I even have to wait to use the bathroom to get ready for work, because my husband and Fluffy are having “bonding time.” I do not feel this is normal behavior. I think it’s an unhealthy relationship with a pet. I have attempted to discuss this with my husband several times without success. He has had Fluffy for six years and obviously prefers interacting with her to spending time with me. Why he needs a wife, I haven’t a clue. Any suggestions? -- Fluffy’s Competition Dear Competition: We agree that this seems to be an unusually close attachment. The screensaver is the least of your problems. The fact that your husband would rather console his cat while you are undergoing a seven-hour surgery indicates skewed priorities. And the “bonding time” in the bathroom is raising all kinds of questions. What, exactly, are they doing in there that you cannot use the room? In any event, your husband is more attached to Fluffy than he is to you and values her companionship more. This is unlikely to change. Dear Annie: We recently buried my mother and held a service in celebration of her life. There was a visitation one hour prior to the service. I cannot count the number of people who came through the line and said, “I bet you don’t know who I am” or “I know you remember me” and then stood there grinning while they waited to see whether I could guess their name. Annie, my sister and I live out of state and hadn’t seen these people in more than 20 years. When I couldn’t recall their names, they acted hurt. Please, folks, at a memorial service, just put out your hand, introduce yourself and say how you knew the deceased. You are precious to come and pay tribute to anyone who has passed away, but do make it easy on a family that is grieving. This is a stressful time, and those who tried to make us play guessing games only made it harder. Also, if you have a story you want to share, please remember that the time for the visitation is limited. Instead, consider calling a week or so after the service. I’m lonely now and would love to hear your remembrance. -- R. Dear R.: Thank you for reminding people that a forthright and simple approach is best. People often become awkward and uncomfortable when confronted with those in mourning and sometimes blurt out insensitive things. Dear Annie: I read the letter from “Feeling Helpless,” whose friend screams at her husband nonstop. That could have been me. I yelled at my husband at the top of my lungs because he made me so angry and frustrated. The reason was that he would check out every woman he saw. It didn’t matter that his teenage children were with him. I finally survived by ignoring his behavior. Warren is survived by his children Lorne (Nancy), Earle, Dawn (Tony), Robyn (Frank) and Aaron, 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank Dr. Scheibenstock, Dr. Lenz and the nursing staff on the 3rd floor for their thoughtfulness and compassion. As per Warren’s wishes there will be no service. Following cremation he will be re-united with his wife Glennis, who predeceased him last year, and they both will be given back to the earth.

VICTORIA — On any given day in British Columbia more than 1,000 children in government care are waiting to be adopted, says a report released Thursday that says too many children are waiting too long to find permanent homes and families. Children’s Minister Stephanie Cadieux and the province’s independent children’s representative, Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond, said they both agree that number is too high. Cadieux and Turpel-Lafond are often at odds over child-protection issues but they united to highlight the need to find more families for vulnerable children, some of whom have been waiting six years to be adopted. “Who are the children waiting for adoption?’’ said Turpel-Lafond. “British Columbians need to know that and understand that.’’ She said 46 per cent of children waiting for adoption are between the ages of five and 11, and 20 per cent are infants and toddlers. “What I’m saying today with the minister, is can British Columbians open their hearts and minds to adopting children in a variety of circumstances?’’ Turpel-Lafond said. Her report, Finding Forever Families: A Review of the Provincial Adoption System, recommends six steps to help the government improve adoption planning and ultimately its rate of adoptions. The report said over a six-year period dating back to 2007, adoption placements by the children’s ministry declined by more than one-third. The report stated the number of newly approved adoptive homes dropped from a high of 386 in 2005-2006 to 213 in 2012-2013. Turpel-Lafond said the 110-page report represents the first extensive review of B.C.’s adoption program. “The results are eye-popping,’’ it said. “Only 260 of the 450 children in the study group were adopted and, while 166 were placed within one year of being registered, 56 were still waiting to be
adopted at the end of the six-year span. For the children who were adopted, it took an average of 31 months from when they were first brought into continuing care by the ministry until their adoption was finalized.’’
Among the six recommendations in the report are: mounting a high-profile, provincewide adoption awareness campaign; eliminating regional decision-making for adoptions by administering a central, provincial pro-
gram; making legislative changes that require and support annual external public reporting of adoption plans; and engaging First Nations to improve rates of adoption for aboriginal children in care. “The numbers tell
the story,’’ the report said. “Although aboriginal children comprised more than 63 per cent of children in the (ministry’s) continuing care in 2012-2013, they accounted for less than 40 per cent of the total children registered for
adoption and only 35 per cent of the children placed in adoptive homes that year.’’ Cadieux said she accepted the six recommendations and her ministry has set a goal of 300 adoptions this year, up from 205 last year.
She said there are often personal reasons that hold people back from adopting children, particularly children in government care, many of whom are older and have suffered trauma and require special care.
