The Surrey Leader Geocache Challenge WHAT IS GEOCACHING? Geocaching is a modern version of a treasure hunt where people use their GPS-enabled smart phones to navigate their way to a set of coordinates. (Coordinates and a clue will be published in The Surrey-North Delta Leader newspaper). Once at the coordinates, participants search the area for the “cache.� In this case, the cache will be a simple container in which you will find a notepad, a trinket and, for the first person to find the cache, a prize token that can be claimed at The Leader office. This is a fantastic way to explore the city and have a great time with friends. So keep your eyes on The Leader and keep this guide handy, as the clues will be taken from the content in this guide. Best-kept secret haunts in Surrey Even long-time locals overlook some of the city’s best attractions by Kristyl Clark As one of the fastestgrowing major cities in Canada, there’s plenty to do and see in Surrey. And with the mercury beginning to rise, there’s no perfect time like the present to explore some of the city’s best-kept secrets. To help uncover these mysterious hot spots – destinations that are often overlooked by many, even long-time locals – we’ve turned to Rebecca Bollwitt. The multi-award winning social media superstar has been highlighting life
in B.C. since 2004 on her little slice of cyberspace, Miss 604.com. Bollwitt currently resides in Vancouver with her husband John; however, many of her blogging exploits bring her back over the bridge to her hometown of Surrey. Born and raised in Whalley, Bollwitt has many fond memories of her former stomping grounds (formerly dubbed “the City of Parks”) and the lush trails, green spaces and playgrounds are what first come to mind when reminiscing about her childhood. “The number-one thing

Jamaican Mi Juicy Cultural diversity and cuisine are the hallmark of fairs, which present a unique opportunity to sample tasty treats from around the world. Bollwitt has sampled her fair share of cuisine from food trucks over the years, but has a soft spot for Jamaican Mi Juicy – a popular dining destination that offers a variety of unique and ethnic eats, including traditional jerk chicken and fresh fruit smoothies sweetened with cane sugar. “This Jamaican foodie truck is definitely a hidden gem that seems to be at every event in Surrey,” said Bollwitt. “Surrey has some great food – most people don’t

Visitors can also expect to find fruits, vegetables, plants and fresh-cut flowers. 4. Redwood Park
The parks and green spaces continue to be draw for Bollwitt – Redwood Park is no exception. As a child, the former Surrey resident enjoyed exploring the steeply sloping wooded hill, which contains a major collection of exotic tree species, particularly evergreens. “It’s a huge park with such a diversity of trees and plant life,” she said, also noting that the pioneer homestead that once belonged to a father and son is a must-see attraction. “It’s a lot of fun to explore,” she said of the two-storey tree house. Redwood Park is located at 17900 20 Ave. 5. Barnston Island Located in the Fraser River between Surrey
and Pitt Meadows, Barnston Island brings back plenty of fond memories for Bollwitt. “We use to drive and park on the main side – my brother, sister and myself would pop on our bikes and circle the whole perimeter of the island... it’s a great cycle route, especially for kids,” she said of the picturesque property that is just a short five-minute ferry route from Surrey on 104 Avenue across from Parson’s Channel. Now that the word about these bestkept secret hot spots is out, it’s time to go and explore them for yourself. Perhaps it’s the home-cooked meals and homey environment that keeps patrons coming back. Or maybe it’s the
familiarity that comes from frequenting the same small garage, bookstore or eatery for years. One thing is certain – finding a gem off the beaten path is like being privy to one of Surrey’s best-kept secrets. But of course, we’re going to spill the beans and let you in on some reputable hot spots worth checking out. 1. Mc Jac’s Roadhouse Grille For those who enjoy

2. Fresgo Inn Restaurant & Bakery Established in 1963, Fresgo Inn Restaurant & Bakery, located at 10102 King George Blvd, has been a unique gathering place for the Surrey community for decades. Aside from the unique cafeteriastyle dining experience, old-school ambience and hearty portions, there’s also a bakery. 3. Al & Jan’s Fish & Chips The “All You Can Eat” sign may entice you to pop in, but it’s the homey atmosphere, friendly service and tasty fare that will keep you coming back again and again. This little family-operated fishand-chips joint, located at 9014 152 St. in Fleetwood (tucked in the PriceSmart Foods), used to be a C-Lover’s franchise. However, owners Al and Jan Wolkoski went the independent route in the ’90s and have continued to make a big splash with the locals ever since. 4. Aaron’s Pizza While this place may not look like much from the outside, the restaurant, located at 17665 57

Ave., gets hopping busy with locals and foodies from all over the Fraser Valley and beyond. For more than 40 years, the Cloverdale eatery has been serving up their signature Greek and Italian dishes using only the freshest, high-quality ingredients. 5. Round Up Cafe Get ready to travel back in time by taking a little trip to the Round Up Cafe. This retro greasy spoon diner, located in the heart of Whalley at 10449 King George Blvd., has been operating since 1949. The menu includes breakfast and a variety of home-style meals. 6. Bruce’s Edge Skate Sharpening Bruce McGill never grows tired hearing the hum of his sharpening stone. The South Surrey resident opened Bruce’s Edge Skate Sharpening in the basement of his South Surrey home at 15485 Poplar Dr., 14 years ago and has watched young children toting hockey sticks grow into adults carrying babies of their own. Although it’s a small shop (approximately 500 square feet),

This little independently owned mechanic shop, located at 10670 135A St., opened in 2001 – back when it was a popular
area for automotive wholesalers to be situated. The automotive wholesalers have since packed up shop; however, Ray Ota Services Ltd. still has its roots planted firm. And there you have it – seven mom-and-pop establishments here in Surrey that you could easily miss if you blink. However, they’re definitely worth a second look and a first-time visit.

WHAT IS GEOCACHING? Geocaching is a modern version of a treasure hunt where people use their GPS-enabled smart phones to navigate their way to a set of coordinates. (Coordinates and a clue will be published in The Surrey-North Delta Leader newspaper). Once at the coordinates, participants search the area for the “cache.” In this case, the cache will be a simple container in which you will find a notepad, a trinket and, for the first person to find the cache, a prize token that can be claimed at The Leader office. This is a fantastic way to explore the city and have a great time with friends. So keep your eyes on The Leader and keep this guide handy, as the clues will be taken from the content in this guide. A 200,000-sq.-ft. expansion opened last summer in this newly redeveloped mall, which boasts more than 200 retailers. Follow the old Semiahmoo Wagon Trail at Semiahmoo Trail, 3314 144 St., in this scenic walk that is rich with history of the Elgin area. To explore various exotic tree species, swing over to Redwood Park (17900 20 Ave.), which boasts a 5.2-km roundtrip walking trail. 4. Get a history lesson Learn about Surrey’s heritage with a visit to Surrey Museum, 17710 56A Ave. Along with permanent galleries that use artifacts, sounds and displays to highlight the city’s background, visitors can explore other exhibits featured on the museum’s exciting schedule. To get a firsthand look at how some Surrey residents lived in the 1800s, check out Historic Stewart Farm at 13723 Crescent Rd. The Victorian farm house and surrounding grounds host a

or would rather stick with the comfortable favourite, the city’s kitchens have something to offer everyone. 6. Park for the day Surrey’s parks offer fun activities for the entire family. Treat the kids to a ride on Eddy the Engine at Bear Creek Park, and take in a game of mini-golf on the neighbouring course afterwards. This park, located at 13750 88 Ave., also offers a playground, running track and water park. At Green Timbers Urban Forest, check out the Surrey Nature Centre. Visitors to 14255 Green Timbers Way can learn about area wildlife, including insects, eagles and coyotes. To explore a fish hatchery, butterfly garden and salmon-fry pond, spend the day at Tynehead Regional Park, 16052-16062 96 Ave., which also has an off-leash area for dogs. by Kristyl Clark There’s a high-tech treasure hunt that’s happening right now in Surrey – one that relies on using GPS-enabled devices rather than a trusty old map. But don’t worry matey, pirates aren’t taking over the community. This particular pursuit is called geocaching – a recreational pastime for many local residents and participants from all over the world. Groups and individuals set out to navigate a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. Each geocache contains a logbook and trinket to take and trade such as pins or small toys. Currently, there are 2,382,628 active geocaches and more than six million geocachers worldwide, including a group in the Surrey area. Nadia Chan, the natural areas coordinator for the City of Surrey, says geocachers must contact the city’s parks division prior to placing a geocache in a park. This is to protect both the green space and the safety of participants. “We just found that geocaches were being placed in environmentally sensitive areas and areas that could potentially be dangerous,” she said in regards to the policy that was put into place back in 2009. “We don’t want to encourage participants to go off the trail and down steep banks to find the geocaches - that’s why we got involved to create a procedure we follow.” Prior to placing a geocache, participants are required to either meet with city staff at the proposed park site to discuss the

Millions on the hunt for hidden treasure Geocaching is catching on with all ages and is a great way to get to know Surrey location of their cache or provide maps and photos of preferred locations via email. The geocaches range in size and can be pretty much any object under the sun. Those who have hidden geocaches in Surrey parks have been pretty creative, notes Chan. “Sometimes they’re hidden inside a hollowed-out rock, sometimes just a Tupperware container hidden behind a stump – there are even ‘nanocaches’ as small as a magnetic push pin,” she said. “The geocachers are very ingenious in what they hide and how they hide them.”
While it’s still a relatively new phenomenon, geocaching is catching on with all ages. There are 2,389,880 active geocaches and more than six million geocachers worldwide. “There are lots of families who participate in this – it’s a great pastime to do together,” said Chan. For the most part, geocaching is a solo or small group activity. However, there are various geocaching community events that bring participants together from all over Surrey and Metro Vancouver. “It’s a great opportunity to get people out to parks they may not
have seen before or visited and it’s such a positive experience,” said Chan of the events that in the past have included Cache In, Trash Out– a chance for volunteers to hunt for geocaches while ridding the area of litter. There has also been an invasive species removal geocaching event. “I think in getting people to explore nature, those events like the cash and trash are fabulous – it’s so nice to see the community out and taking ownership of the green spaces and parks.” To learn more about geocaching, visit www. geocaching.com
