VANCOUVER - Road work and clearing for a construction camp began June 23 in anticipation of full on development beginning next year of a planned molybdenum mine at Kitsault on the north coast. “We are very excited about the commencement of construction work at Kitsault,” said Jeff Lowe, Chief Operating Officer of Avanti. “This is a significant milestone for the Kitsault molybdenum project and marks the completion of a very important aspect of Avanti’s permitting efforts.” The work follows the company receiving a mines permit from the provincial government on June 13 and subsequent permits a few days later. The road, providing access

to the property, is to be 4 kilometres long and the work at the construction camp will increase capacity from a current capacity of 50 people to one that can hold 150 people. Avanti first received provincial environment clearance in March 2013 and anticipates federal environmental clearance very shortly. The project, which will take approximately two years to build, has a capital cost of nearly $1 billion to cover construction and ongoing requirements. A mine life of 14 years is being forecast with the need for a mining workforce of approximately 300. At the peak of construction, company officials say they will need approximately 700 people.

Molybdenum is chiefly used as a strengthener for steel and Avanti has already signed sales and financing deals with German and South Korean firms. Avanti now has some of the money needed for full construction and is in the final stages of lining up all of what’s needed for the project. For now the company is financing work through a $50 million loan taken out last year. Another major project is scheduled to take place this fall and that’s rebuilding the Nass River Bridge on the road into Kitsault north from the Nass Valley. It needs a new deck and other work done in order to hold heavy equipment and other items that will be taken in during construc-

tion. “I am eager to see production at Kitsault begin, which will provide up to 300 new, well-paying jobs for British Columbians,” said provincial mines minister Bill Bennett when the mines permit was granted. And if Avanti has been making progress on its approvals, it took a major step forward when it negotiated a revenue sharing deal with the Nisga’a Nation that was announced the beginning of this month. That deal will see the Nisga’a Nation receive up to two per cent of net smelter royalties with the actual dollar amount varying depending upon the price of molybdenum. The Nisga’a and the province are also negotiating an agreement to share the mine’s tax revenues.

KITIMAT - Kitimat council and the public have not given up hope that the Marine Planning Partnership system can be halted until there’s been meaningful consultation. The partnership, which includes various stakeholders and First Nations on an advisory group, have been developing marine plans outlining suggestions for the provincial govern-

ment on how to manage and develop coastal areas. The prospect of multiple users of the coast has enhanced the concept of planning. However many groups and people have felt left out of the process, and even after council spoke to representatives of MaPP at a recent open meeting, they still are pushing for better consultation. The public has joined the fight as well. Most vocal is Dave

Wahl, who runs Eagle Edge Charters in Kitimat, and who wrote and presented to Kitimat Council to push for his suggested motion that the MaPP proposal be held in abeyance until there’s been meaningful consultation. “If we don’t do something about it we’re not only denying the people of British Columbia to examine this, we’re also just going right over the heads of all the governments, including the federal gov-

ernment,” he said. The MaPP process has bypassed all structures of government, he said. Wahl also noted that in speaking to Skeena NDP MLA Robin Austin and Skeena - Bulkley NDP MP Nathan Cullen, neither had knowledge of the MaPP process. Councillors, who asked for but failed to receive an extension to the public comment portion of the MaPP process, passed a motion

which reads, “That the MaPP proposal be held in abeyance until full meaningful consultation with ocean user groups as equal partners is complete.” It is the first line of Wahl’s suggested motion, which in full had outlined how consultation should occur. Councillor Mario Feldhoff, who moved it, said that if full meaningful consultation takes place all those other details would follow. “I’m really, really

disappointed,” said Feldhoff about the MaPP process so far. “I’m very disappointed that they would not give the community meaningful consultation and extend the timelines.” Other councillors shared their frustration over the process. Edwin Empinado said that this motion is needed to put in hard writing council’s desire in terms of this process. Mary Murphy agreed saying they haven’t done enough to

reach stakeholders. “They listened to everyone who spoke against what the proposal was, and then met with certain individual groups but didn’t meet with everyone who was opposed to it,” she said, saying the process should now go back to square one. Rob Goffinet said the people behind MaPP have not received a social licence. “At the moment it’s absolutely obvious they lack it,” he said.

Drugs seized by police NEW HAZELTON - The New Hazelton RCMP responded to 123 calls for service from June 12 to June 20. On June 12th, 2014, at 01:38 a.m., the received a complaint of a potential impaired driver. Officers located the vehicle identifying the driver as a local resident from Hagwilget. The driver was investigated for impaired driving and subsequently arrested after providing a sample to a roadside screening device that indicated a fail. The driver was also arrested for possession of a controlled substance and found in possession of a quantity of marihuana. The investigation resulted in an immediate road side prohibition for

ninety days and the vehicle was impounded for thirty days. On June 13 RCMP attended a fight on John Field Road, Gitanmaax. Several intoxicated people were fighting and subsequently one person was arrested for Cause Disturbance by being intoxicated. The suspect was released when sober when the public interest was satisfied. On June 17 RCMP located an intoxicated male in the middle of the highway near the junction of Highway 62 and Highway 16, New Hazelton. The male, known to police, was arrested for being intoxicated in public and lodged for his own safety until sober.

Rupertites rally against gov’t approval By Martina Perry

PRINCE RUPERT Following the federal government’s conditional approval of the Northern Gateway Project last Tuesday, hundreds gathered at Mariner’s Park for a peaceful protest against the oil pipeline project on Friday evening. People of all ages and cultural backgrounds took part in the rally, many displaying anti-oil signs and wearing First Nations regalia. The event included a number of speakers, with many stressing the need for unity in order to prevent the project from moving forward. “No matter what nation you are or where you are from, let your voices be heard. This is not about Aboriginal people ... it’s about all human beings in British Columbia. We need to come together,” said Lax Kw’alaams hereditary chief Murray Smith. “We need to stay focused on the fight that lays ahead. Enbridge has billions and billions of dollars to fight us. But united, we can say no.” Lax Kw’alaams Mayor Garry Reece echoed those sentiments. “No money in the world will make us support something that will destroy our sea resources and the environment,” he said, adding there’s no guarantee a spill wouldn’t happen. Gitanyow ink mine deal TORONTO - For the second time in as many weeks, a junior mining company with a large gold property near Stewart has struck a deal helping to move the project forward. Last week Seabridge Gold signed a deal with the Nisga’a Nation providing it with revenues and jobs and business opportunities arising from its KSM project. And this week Seabridge has entered into an agreement with the Gitanyow Wilps represented by the Gitanyow Hereditary Chiefs Office. Under the agreement, Seabridge agrees to provide funding for certain programs relating to wildlife, fish and water quality monitoring to address some of the concerns raised by the Gitanyow Huwilp, as well as for a committee to establish a means of maintaining communications about KSM Project related issues. “The Gitanyow, whose territory is downstream of the KSM Project, sought certainty that their lands and resources would be protected. Through this agreement, Seabridge is provid-

ing a mechanism to monitor the potential impacts of the p;roject on their resources, which we believe will give greater comfort that the KSM Project will perform as projected, and will assist the Gitanyow Huwilp in their efforts to maintain and improve wildlife and fish populations in the region that might be impacted by the Project,” said Seabridge chair Rudi Fronk. The deal with the Nisga’a Nation establishes what is being called by Seabridge “a long-term co-operative relationship between Seabridge and the Nisga’a Nation under which the Nisga’a Nation will support development of the project, participate in economic benefits from the project and provide ongoing advice. The agreement includes commitments by Seabridge regarding jobs and contracting opportunities at the KSM roject, education and training, financial payments and a framework for working together on ongoing development matters. The Nisga’a have agreed to supply project letters as well.

Port commits $10 million to break bulk By Shaun Thomas

PRINCE RUPERT - A multimillion dollar investment by the Prince Rupert Port Authority (PRPA) will open up Ridley Island to directly receive bulk cargo that may be needed as major developments get underway on the North Coast. “Yesterday at the first part of our board of directors meeting, a $10 million investment was approved for the relocation of the RORO — rollon, roll-off — ramp. It was initially stationed on the north part of Fairview Terminal and it will be relocated to a location right near Prince Rupert Grain,” announced PRPA president and CEO Don Krusel during the organization’s June 19 annual general meeting. “We are going to fix up the area around there and create a gateway for bulk, break bulk and

project cargo to move through Prince Rupert and we already have a customer in line to initiate that. We expect that to be ready the first quarter of next year.” The relocation of the facility to an outcrop near Prince Rupert Grain will not require an environmental assessment, according to Prince Rupert Port Authority manager of corporate communications MiDon Krusel chael Gurney. “On commencement of construction, we will review the environmental management plan with the contractor and use best management practices from industry,” he said, noting the port authority has already spoken with “federal agencies with an interest in the foreshore”. The announcement comes just four months after the 185-tonne floating RORO ramp at Fairvew began to sink.

PRINCE RUPERT Prince Rupert teachers want extra in-class assistance for the students who need it. The Prince Rupert District Teachers’ Union (PRDTU) sent a letter to Prince Rupert School District (SD52) board of education in April outlining its concern with students who require additional support to be successful in their learning. “This was a formal way of bringing some of the concerns that are happening in our classrooms to trustees,” said Kathy Murphy, president of the PRDTU, adding it was a way to start dialogue. The PRDTU said by having a ministry designation, students needing extra assistance will have an Individual Education Plan (IEP) in place ensuring forms of support are available. In the letter

Murphy said some students have to wait years to be identified. “Many children, including some who have been assessed, are working significantly below grade level and do not have a designation,” said Murphy. The letter states “there are approximately twice the number of these ‘grey area’ students as students designated with special needs, yet there is no official recognition or plan of support for these vulnerable students”. Murphy said this estimation comes from an article published in a 2006 edition of Teacher Newsmagazine on “grey-area” students, written by the presidents of three B.C. Teachers’ Federation provincial specialists associations. By doubling the 260 students who had a ministry designation, the PRDTU estimates there were 520 “grey area” of 2,103 overall students

Jones reviewed the tiers of interventions in SD52, the first being school-wide supports that she said help 80 per cent of kids, including teaching practices like self-regulation, student profiles in combination with initiatives that embrace a diverse learning environment, assessment for learning, as well as collaboration and co-teaching. Students with specific challenges get targeted assistance through learning resource teachers, and if they are unable to provide help the district principal of student support services will obtain additional community resources. “In terms of the

Murphy said that SD52 tries to provides as much in-class support as it can, but said the issue is provincial government funding isn’t covering all the methods of support that are needed, like additional educational assistants (EA) or teachers. “If a child is designated with a learning disability ... sometimes they can piggyback extra help through educational assistants because there’s other children who generate them in their class.” But often those kids don’t generate an EA because the ministry changed the formulas in how kids qualify for extra support. It’s more about money than intent on anyone’s part,” she said.

Stewart resident aims for B.C. crown STEWART - Jordi Brand-McKay is hoping to put Stewart on the map on June 30th. She is among 50 hopefuls from across the province competing for the Miss, Mrs. and Miss Teen BC crowns. The pageant will be broadcast on Shaw Television later this fall. The Miss BC, Teen BC and Mrs. BC Pageant prides itself in its uniqueness in the Pageant world. VICTORIA - The B.C. government has begun allowing “happy hour” discounts for alcoholic drinks, imposing minimum drink prices that force some outlets to raise their prices. Effective this week, the minimum price for draft beer or cider in B.C. is 25 cents per fluid ounce, which puts a 12-ounce sleeve at $3, a 20-ounce pint at $5 and a 60-ounce jug at $15. Using a one-ounce minimum, the lowest permitted price for any alcoholic drink is $3. The release of the regulations Friday was greeted with protests from some pubs that were offering drink specials below that price. The regulations also give licensed restaurants the ability to serve drinks without a food order, although their licence still requires them to offer a full food menu. The B.C. government’s liquor policy review also levels the field between pubs and restaurants by allowing families with children into pubs at mealtimes.

The B.C. Restaurant and Foodservices Association issued a statement reminding its members that the new rules also allow customers to carry a drink from a lounge to an adjoining restaurant. Licensees are also allowed to transfer small amounts of stock from one to the other if they run out of a particular product. In a policy direc-

tive to industry associations, local governments and police agencies, the government’s Liquor Control and Licensing Branch says the lower price may be applied selectively for “ladies night” specials or “team night” for players in uniform. Minimum prices do not apply to catered events, or special occasion licences.

Black is a few generations removed from her family’s farming background in Quesnel, but her research into barley is not only providing valuable data to current pro-

With funding secured through the Omineca Beetle Action Coalition, Black has been able to work with farmers from the Robson Valley to the Bulkley Valley to identify concerns and help develop research projects which could provide solutions. “I think the biggest thing about agriculture and farming is that it’s so contextual and so localized,” she said. “Even on a single field, one part could have beautiful soils and the other part could be get-

ting a little bit rocky. The variation is huge and it’s the producers who know their land.” While Black is busy doing the research, UNBC economics and international studies graduate Merrick is busy working through practical solutions with farmers every day. As the program coordinator with Beyond the Market in Prince George, Merrick is tasked with helping the agricultural community overcome the challenges that arise. Merrick said the biggest barrier facing farmers in the southern part of B.C. is the increasing price of land.

With funding from regional districts and other municipal governments, Merrick can connect farmers with the most relevant resources. “People don’t always have access to the information, training, and mentors,” Merrick said. “We’re a grassroots solution to that gap.” Merrick said her work goes with the research Black is conducting. Police seize truck TERRACE - A blue 1993 Chevrolet truck attempted to avoid a roadblock on Hwy 16 just west of Terrace on June 22. But officers did pull the vehicle over in the Fisherman’s Park area. PORT EDWARD - Pacific NorthWest LNG celebrated a milestone on Thursday with the opening of the Port Edward community office. The company held a ribbon-cutting ceremony and community barbecue encouraging Port Edward residents to visit the new office, which is located in the former Port Edward elementary school. “Today we are excited to establish a physical presence in Port Edward. The community office will be a source of information for residents to have their questions answered by our staff. It will also serve as a working office for the project staff when they are ultimately on site at Lelu Island,” said Greg Kist, president of Pacific NorthWest LNG during the event. “Communication is very important to us as a company. We are committed to providing information to the community here. But we also want to hear from you, your thoughts on the project and how we can contribute to a better Port Edward.” Port Edward Mayor Dave MacDonald was pleased to see the office open, saying it shows the company’s commitment to the community. “[Whenever Pacific NorthWest LNG is] asked to do something they do it for the community and area,” said MacDonald, who on behalf of the residents of Port Edward gave a Roth Harvey painting as a gift to the office. “They’ve been more than willing to listen.” A final investment decision on the Pacific NorthWest LNG project could be made as early as the end of the year, with Kist saying the company looks forward to establishing “a long, beneficial relationship” with the communities of Port Edward and Prince Rupert, the First Nations of the area and government leaders. “We understand the importance of listening ... not only during the planning stages, but throughout the life of our proposed project,” he said. The Port Edward Community Office will be open to the public starting Wednesday, June 25, with staff working every Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Teaching the bear necessities to Kitimatians in the summer By Cameron Orr

KITIMAT - Jenna Davie and Nathan Closter are on the case when it comes to bear safety in Kitimat. The pair are the latest in a line of summer employees for the District of Kitimat who spend the warm months building a foundation of knowledge on how to handle bears and how to prevent confrontations with the furry beasts. To long time residents of Kitimat it may seem second nature what to do when you sight a bear, but Davie and Closter say knowing and acting can be two different things. “Our main goal is to educate the public about bear safety, whether they’re out in the bush hiking and don’t know what to do...and attractant management, keeping your garbage locked up properly.” Even short hikes, like Pine Creek trail, can have bears, as Davie said she discovered when she took it recently and found lots of bear ‘calling cards’. Closter said there’s

Busing chosen over grant KITIMAT - Rather than continue handing $15,000 over to Shames Mountain’s co-op in Terrace this year, council has opted to develop a bus service to bring Kitimatians to the mountain. The plan was initiated by Councillor Phil Germuth who during budget deliberations managed to get the annual $15,000 grant given to the ski hill on hold until Kitimat could explore options to instead use that money for transportation. The debate which took place on June 16 was split among two motions, the first being from Mario Feldhoff who moved to give the mountain the $15,000 as the town has done over the past few years. However that motion failed in a tie with Edwin Empinado, Rob Goffinet and Phil Germuth opposed. The motion which eventually passed was for the District to develop a bussing plan based the use of a chartered 48 passenger coach bus, at a $1,642.50 cost per trip.

Beware of rental scams TERRACE - Terrace RCMP are advising people to be wary of rental scams. The rental scam is a spin of the classic scam in which a con artist tries to sell you something that they clearly have no authorization to sell. This is where the common expression “If you believe that, I’ve got a bridge to sell you” comes from. “Education is the best defence against scammers. Know what scams look like and how to protect yourself from becoming a target. Crooks use the Internet to find their victims, but the Internet is also a great place to find crooks. Search a name, phone number, address, etc. that is given to you when conducting transactions. In this recent incident in Terrace the victim searched the name provided to her after the fact and found that they were wanted for fraud in the USA. This search needs

to be the first step,” says Cst Angela Rabut, Community Policing/Media Relations Terrace RCMP. The rental scam is commonly perpetrated by crooks who copy Craigslist or Kijiji postings for rental properties. The crook will change the contact information and maybe even lower the price to make the offer even more attractive. Then they will repost the same pictures and description with the changed contact info. When inquiries respond to the ads, the phony landlords or owners usually have a story as to why they aren’t available to show the property but invite the prospective renter to drive by and take a look. Group enjoys chief’s ride

TELEGRAPH CREEK - Fifteen avid bike riders took part in Tahltan Band’s fifth annual Chief’s Ride June 20 to promote healthy activities and raise vital funds for members’ medical emergencies. The ride saw riders including Tahltan youth and visitors from as far away as Colorado take on the grueling 112km road from Dease Lake to Telegraph Creek. Chief Rick McLean, who started and leads the ride, said: “It was incredible to see our kids get so excited about the ride this year. It is good to see people getting out there and getting active and promoting healthy activity. “This is the fifth year of the ride, which has so far raised more than $130,000 to help community members cover medical expensesm” said McLean. “Thank you to all of our sponsors and the everyone involved in making this year’s ride possible.” For the first time this year, the ride was part of a larger Bike Week in Telegraph Creek and Iskut with the support of the successful Sprockids youth cycling program. The ride is also a chance to show off Telegraph Creek’s new bike park and the area’s amazing back country trails.

Lucille Smallwood passed away peacefully at age 60 at University Hospital of Northern B.C. in Prince George. She leaves behind her mother Maxine Donna Smallwood, sister Donna May Graf, sister Heather Lynne Boone, brother Kenneth Albert Smallwood, niece Debra Ann Graf and greatniece Ktana Lynn Letawski. Special thanks to the staff at Mills Memorial Hospital in Terrace and to the ICU staff at University of Northern B.C. for their dedicated care and support. Lucy will be dearly missed and always remembered. At Lucy’s request, there will be no public funeral. Cremation has taken place. A private Celebration Of Life will be held at a later date. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to the Leukemia / Bone Marrow Transplant Program of B.C. or to the B.C.S.P.C.A.

STEWART LOG TERMINAL - UPGRADES TO LOG LOADING INFRASTRUCTURE BACKGROUND The District of Stewart is Canada’s most northerly ice-free port located in one of the most resource-rich regions in North America. At the end of the Portland Canal, Stewart has a continuous 100 year port history in supporting mining and forestry development. The District owns a log storage and handling facility on the Arrow Dock Causeway along the east side of the mouth of the Bear River. Several forest product processing and exporting companies operate out of the District of Stewart Log Storage and Handling Facility. The aging log loading infrastructure is in need of repair. Matched funding has been awarded to the District through a contribution agreement (not a grant) from the federal government through the Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative, Transportation Infrastructure Fund, to assist with an upgrade project to rehabilitate and upgrade the facility’s log skids. The log handling facility has 16 log skids, or slides, made from long steel pipes that are filled with concrete and welded together which are anchored to buried steel and/or log foundation structures. This project will rehabilitate and upgrade all 16 skids. SCOPE OF WORK The scope of the work is to include: x

Address grade issues and gravel erosion: In order to ensure the log skids remain on a level, secure surface, gravel erosion needs to be addressed at the site by installing shot rock. Procure and install 800 yards of gravel and 700 yards of 6”-8” shot rock along the lower one third to one half portion of the log skids in the entire bottom area of the log handling facility. Equipment will be needed to temporarily lift the log skid structures while the material is spread beneath.

Repair and replace steel log skid structures: Log skids are approximately 60-70 feet in length consisting of 2-3 20-30 foot pipe sections that have been welded together and filled with concrete. Pipes are 14-16” in diameter. Short log skids have three pipes, regular skids have two. Pocket references and skid numbers illustrated in drawing below: Pocket #1: Replace centre pipe of Skid #3 (3 x 21” steel pipes) Pocket #2: Reposition Skid #1 so that the ends are evened up Pocket #3: Replace middle pipe of Skid #2 (3 x 21” steel pipes) Pocket #6: Skid #1 is a short log skid, entire skid needs to be replaced. (9 x 21” steel pipes) Total of 21 pipe sections

Install flat bar on all log skids: Procure and install a 40 foot section of 4” x 1” flat bar on top of all 16 log skids. The flat bar will reinforce each of the skids' structural integrity as well as provide a smoother, longer-lasting surface for the logs to roll down enhancing their functionality. 16 skids total, 5 are short log skids (3 pipe lengths) and 9 are regular (2 pipe lengths) Total pipe lengths: 33 33 pipe lengths x 2 @ 20ft sections = 66 x 20ft sections Project management liaison with Log Handling facility operations manager and District of Stewart Director of Public Works

PRINCE RUPERT - The Terrace Northmen went undefeated at the annual Seafest rugby tournament in Prince Rupert two weeks ago, a triumph which included one crucial league play shutout against the Prince George Gnats. The Northmen took it to the Gnats 26-0 Saturday, June 14. “But it was a way closer game than the score indicated,” said

Northman Adam Linteris. “We probably spent 90 per cent of the time between our 22 yard lines.” But the team was able to capitalize on brief openings, and benefitted from weeks spent working with coach Mike Homeniuk on weaknesses they’d noticed after their last league game against the Williams Lake Rustlers. “The game just really went well. Everything was clicking. Our coach, Mike Homeniuk, really got us dialed in for this one,” said Lin-

KITIMAT - Come September there will be a serge of cycling police officers through the north. Er, surge, we mean. The Cops for Cancer Tour de North is ramping up for their up to 800km cycle from Prince George to Prince Rupert, with a stop-over in Kitimat as well. Representing Kitimat’s constabulary is Cst. Rob Buller with the Kitimat RCMP detachment, who is leaving his comfort zone to train on his donated (for the run at least) bicycle. It’s not a style of cycling he’s used to, he says, historically having more experience on much heavier mountain bikes. Yet the chance to make a difference in the ongoing fight against cancer was not an opportunity he wanted to waste. “All the money from it goes towards childhood cancer research and also goes towards support programs for the families and children,” he explained. Buller, as with each rider, is tasked to raise at least $3,000 and at this early stage he has already surpassed the $500 milestone. On July 11 and 12 he’ll be reaching out to the community with barbecues at Overwaitea. People can also donate to his cause by visiting www.tourdenorth.ca and searching for Robert Buller in the participants list. Buller says he knows the generous spirit of Kitimat residents and has little doubt he’ll make it to his goals. What will really make him sweat though is, of course, cycling through the northwest’s challenging terrain.

end,” said Linteris. “For us the key to that is making sure we can rally all of the boys together and get as many people out there as we can. Last year (when the team travelled on a similar road trip) we probably went down with 16 or 17, and after the first game, I don’t even think we had a full team the next day due to injuries.” The team is looking to keep the momentum going from this win and at least “make those other teams work for it,” said Linteris.

Not too shabby for the seven-year Vic Marion Senior Open veteran player, who won his first title in the tournament on Sunday taking the overall low gross score for the weekend. “I birdied [hole] number 15. I just kept on making pars and was steady. I shot a 74 [on Sunday], that’s one of my best scores this year so I’m pretty happy,” said Bazansky. The Rupertite shot a 77 on his first day for a 36-hole total of 151 and it came down to the final few holes for Bazansky to wedge his way into first place. After tearing his left rotator cuff last year, and not playing a single round of golf last summer while he was recovering for nine months, Bazansky has made up for it this year. “This is probably my 30th round [this year],” he said.

Richard Wright, who was leading after Saturday’s round, ran into some difficulty, shooting an eight, nine and nine on holes nine, 10 and 11 respectively, while Brian Holkestad, last year’s champ, was hurting on the 16th hole. “I just kept hitting the ball straight and they got themselves into trouble and what can you do,” said Bazansky. Gamesmanship aside, the three golfers all played together and it made for a fun outing, said the winner. “We’re

all good buddies. It’s nice to play with people that you’re comfortable with and you can enjoy yourself. Nobody gets mad, you can talk with everybody; it makes a big difference,” said Bazansky. Teru Yamamoto took the tournament’s overall low net score, shooting 131 with a 15-handicap in the First Flight, while Rose Holkestad took the tournament’s senior women’s title, her second straight, and second-overall, shooting a low-gross score of

180 with Selma Standring, a 28-handicap, taking the senior women’s overall low net title, shooting 148. “It was a little windy at times,” said Bazansky. “It swirls. Our course is like the [PGA’s] Masters. The wind swirls all over the place and you’ve just got to wait for it and take your shot when you think you’re ready for it. Today I was lucky.” As for his prize, Bazansky figured he’d go with something practical and something that will help his shoulder along on to 100 per cent health. “Probably a golf cart. My old golf cart is getting pretty ratty. It’s something I need. I don’t go for the most expensive prize I go for something I can use,” he said. Howard Linn shot the First Flight’s low gross title, carding a 175 with Eric Hand, a 19-handicap, shooting a 141 low net total. The Second Flight saw Don McMillan capture the second low gross title as he carded a 182 and Byron Gordon, a 28-handicap, shot 140 for the Second Flight’s lowest net score.
