Summer courses were originally scheduled to start next week, but the breakdown in talks between the teachers and the province has the district preparing to cancel the programs. Last year’s summer school enrolment totalled 1,674 students in three different components – secondary, elementary and online. Superintendent Kevin Godden said the district has left the decision as late as possible. “We need time to be able to set it up, hire the teachers and prepare the class-

room spaces,” Godden said. “We’ve left ourselves a minimum amount of time to do it, which is basically four days working through the weekend.” But Godden doesn’t foresee any lastminute scramble. “I don’t see the likeliness of a settlement in the next week,” said Godden, who last week was sounding optimistic that the strike would end soon. The district will make a formal cancellation announcement on its website. The Labour Relations Board – which previously declared the preparation of final grades for Grade 12 students an essential service — ruled this week that students in Grades 10 and 11 must receive report cards. That will see the Abbotsford school district work with the Abbotsford District Teachers’ Association (ADTA) this week to provide

final grades to those students, according to Godden. Provincial exams for students in Grades 10 to 12 are concluding this week. Godden said graduating students will likely receive their final report cards in the first week of July. Final marks for Grade 10/11 students may take considerably longer, since the district is operating without clerical staff due to the strike. There will be no report cards for younger students without an agreement between teachers and the province. Godden said the teachers had been working on a “condensed report card,” prior to this week. But that work stopped once they hit the picket lines full-time. Despite the lack of report cards, Godden said students will be moved up to the next grade.

Abbotsford Christian School celebrated 60 years of operation Saturday with a day of festivities and a barbecue. Hundreds of teachers, parents and students – past and present – gathered on the school grounds to applaud six decades of education. The event featured a massive open-pit chicken roast, a fashion show of grad dresses past, games for kids and adults, and plenty of sun. The school opened its doors in 1953 as an elementary school, with its campus on the Abbotsford-Mission Highway. Rapid growth prompted the conR sstruction of a new school just seven MORINEE years later. ACS grew throughout ONLws.com the 1960s and, by the 1970s, had abbyne already outgrown its new digs. A a property was subsequently bought pr on Old Clayburn Road, with a new school built there and enrolment and programs expanded to include secondary schooling. The school’s first secondary graduation class finished Grade 12 in 1981. In 1985, two-thirds of the Abbotsford-Mission Highway campus was destroyed by a devastating fire. But thanks to the community’s support, a new school was erected within a year. Rapid enrolment growth continued into the 1990s, peaking in 1999 with around 1,300 students from kindergarten to Grade 12 attending the school. The ’90s also saw a second Old Clayburn Road property purchased, which allowed for the creation of a new elementary school campus. The school celebrated half a century in 2003. ACS currently has about 950 students.

Lose lynch mob mentality

The price being paid for the cruelty exhibited in a video recently released to the media l keeps climbing. It has already rightly cost the jobs of those who allegedly beat dairy cattle at Chilliwack Cattle Sales, and criminal charges are under review. But the tally hasn’t stopped there. The reputation of an entire industry, and the thousands of people who work in it, is now being so sullied it is breath-taking. The anger, hatred and derision displayed in online comments and in social media borders on hysterical. An online petition spurred dairy behemoth Saputo to force the BC Milk Marketing Board to refuse milk from the farm. Tens of thousands of litres of milk were destroyed before officials said they were satisfied with remedial measures at the farm. But that penalty isn’t high enough for the online lynch mob. It’s already convicted the eight dairy workers of animal cruelty, as well as the people they worked for.

Now some commenters have branded every dairy farmer in the country as a vicious sadist whose pursuit of profit comes at the cost of the animals in his or her care. To be clear, the behaviour portrayed in that video is abhorrent. But so are the actions of those trying to destroy the lives and livelihoods of so many. Agriculture is a critical part of the Fraser Valley economy, generating more than $1.8 billion annually in economic activity. A major portion of that can be attributed to dairy farms. Not only do farmers help feed a hungry world, they create jobs, fuel associated businesses, and insulate against the vagaries of a fluctuating global economy. None of this is an excuse for abuse. But to condemn every dairy operation, and maintain that all must pay for the actions of a few is a gross contortion of reasoning and justice. – Black Press

Other Hand While relaxing with a tin cup of wine in the beautiful Kane Valley high above Merritt on Saturday afternoon, I lazily waved off a busy buzzing hornet. Looking for easier prey, the hornet then circled my buddy who, with rather rude expletives, suggested it depart to parts unknown. It was then that he pointed out the potential need for his EpiPen, a device containing epinephrine, which is an antidote for severe allergic reactions. “Perhaps you had best point out its location,” I suggeste,; whereupon he retreated to his tent (far away from mine), rummaged through his gear bag and produced the device. To explain why our tents were widely separated is to know that following an evening around the campfire, I

am prone to snoring. Not only does it keep fellow campers at bay, it likely discourages encounters with opportunistic bears considering a foraging run through the site. While I’m told that I occasionally sound like a John Deere tractor without a muffler, I sleep peacefully. On the other hand, not knowing such things as the location of another’s vital medications can quite possibly be a life-threatening issue. Thus, after showing me the EpiPen, I suggested he place the device where I could, should the need arise, find it as well as jam it into his leg were he to go into anaphylactic shock. Potential crisis resolved, we reminisced about the time last fall when he was sitting in a hunting camp somewhere in the back of beyond: suddenly he had felt a sting on his arm – over the years he’s had many of them with no effect – and moments later collapsed into unconsciousness. Disconcerted would be a mild description of the reaction of his friend that day.

We then recalled stories of people we knew who had severe reactions to such usually mild things as bug bites or nuts. Fortunately, all survived, though without immediate medication they may not have. So, as words of warning for those who, like in the nursery rhyme Teddy Bears’ Picnic, “go down to the woods today,” avoid “a big surprise” by ensuring you know in advance if your friends/family have any serious allergies or other health issues. letters Refine oil closer to the source

So the government approved the Northern Gateway pipeline. No surprise there. The feds and the oil industry have lied to us repeatedly. The environmentalists have done the same. I for one am not willing to live in a cave somewhere waiting for a green solution that I can afford, nor do I want to see the government or the oil industry completely dismantle all the environmental safeguards that used to exist and spread tons of poison all over the land or in the water. It’s time for a serious re-evaluation of the whole thing. We have oil – lots of it, and it’s going to end up somewhere through existing pipelines or even worse by rail. A pipeline is a much safer way to ship it. The fact that our oil is in the form of tar and requires a dilutant to ship it is one of the most serious drawbacks. A spill of bitumen or the dilutant is the worst possible disaster. Once we can accept the fact that industry is not going to leave the product in the ground unless we make it impossible for them to ship it somewhere through legislation. That, of course, is ridiculous. The loss of jobs would cripple the country.

Refine it. Somewhere closer to the source (Northwestern B.C.). It provides long-term jobs. It provides a product more suitable for domestic consumption. It provides a product for export that has can be sold at a world price instead of at the deep discounts we export many of our resources. The corrosive dilutant would not have to be pumped through the pipeline which reduces the possibility of a leak. The refined product, which is then piped to the coast (for domestic distribution/consumption or export), is much easier to clean up in the event of a spill. In the end, Enbridge or Kinder Morgan needs to be very strictly regulated to help avoid a spill and must be forced to provide the necessary funds and support to immediately respond to any spill. All that said a significant chunk of all resulting royalties should be forced to be used to promote and implement alternative energy. Then one day the pipeline wars will be completely unnecessary. F. Switch to recovery overdue Abbotsford should have switched to recovery years ago. Housing needs to be in place to help those coming out of (addiction) treatment. It isn’t the eight years of ASDAC (Abbotsford Social Development Advisory Committee) work disappearing into the void of city hall, mayor and council. It isn’t the two-plus years prior to ASDAC where the mayor and council “couldn’t do anything until they had a committee to advise them on social issues.” It isn’t the years prior to this when Abbotsford “didn’t have a homeless problem/issue.” It is the lives wasted by mayors and councils who refused and ignored their responsibilities and duty of care due the citizens of Abbotsford. It is not just the lives of those who have died or are dying or committed

suicide or are incarcerated or incapacitated. It is the lives of those who remain homeless, on the streets, using substances as a crutch to deal with life, mentally ill, capacity challenged, etc. Abbotsford should have made the switch from recycling to recovery more than a decade ago. Today Abbotsford would have the housing, supports and services in place – or at least a solid foundation to build on – to provide what is needed on the journey to recovery and wellness. I would like to put today’s classroom into perspective, and compare to a classroom 30 years ago. The size hasn’t changed, but 30 years ago, kids who didn’t meet the requirements failed. Someone decided that failing is bad for your self-esteem, so year after year students keep getting pushed through. That accounts for a third of the average classroom. Among that third are the “individual education plan.” The kids who need help, the kids who without the support of teachers’ assistants would learn nothing at all. The next third are ESL students. These kids have also been pushed through. How can you graduate, but not speak English? So that leaves the other third – they’re the forgotten “normal” kids, who are squeaking by with a bit of education after the teacher is done with the rest of the class. The first third just simply needs parents to learn accountability both for themselves and their kids, and the second group should come to school with a good command of the English language. And the third group – good luck to you. Another big difference between now and 30 years ago is that the people who used to fail high school could go get a job and make a living. You can’t do that now. Even high school grads will only ever qualify for minimum wage jobs and need subsidies from the taxpayer. And the last major difference between today’s classroom and one 30 years ago is respect. Kids used to respect their teachers. Now they don’t respect much. Shannon Lightfoot

Five young women from Abbotsford are among the 50 contestants from across the province with dreams of capturing the Miss BC, Miss Teen BC and Mrs. BC crown on June 30. A woman arrested last week in relation to the sale of drugs at homeless camps along Gladys Avenue has been charged. Danielle Louise Toplass, 29, has been charged with three counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking. She was arrested last Wednesday after police executed a search warrant at a residence in the 1900 block of Powell Crescent. Const. Ian MacDonald said police found nearly 45 grams of crack cocaine, 15 grams of heroin, and 10 grams of methamphetamine in the home, as well as $6,000 cash. MacDonald said Toplass is “extensively known” to police. According to the provincial court database, Toplass has multiple prior convictions, including unauthorized use of credit card data, mischief, break and enter, possession of stolen property, fraud,

obstructing a police officer, uttering threats and theft. In 2009, she was one of two women who pleaded guilty to arson

in connection to a blaze that destroyed a section of The Crossing condo development in the 33500 block of Marshall Road in July

2008. The fire caused an estimated $9 million in damages. Toplass received a two-year jail term.

an undercover video of animal abuse was released earlier this month. “Dairy producers including Saputo, through the BC Dairy Council, have approved that all the required measures have now been taken by CCS to effectively resume distribution of milk,” BCDA chief executive officer Dave Eto said. Those measures include monitoring of animal treatment, improved supervision and ongoing education. Saputo had asked to stop receiving milk from the farm earlier last week after 90,000 people signed an online petition calling for a boycott. The BC Milk Marketing Board said Saputo’s request forced it to destroy the milk, which was done by dumping it into an anaerobic digester. That move triggered its own petition and calls of dismay from a public unsettled by the disposal of tens of thousands of litres of milk. With the situation at CCS apparently resolved to the satisfaction of both dairy producers and the SPCA, attention will turn towards making sure such a situation doesn’t occur in the future. “The past few weeks have been a dark time for the B.C. dairy industry,” the BCDA said in its release. Eto said farmers were shocked by the video and know that the public’s confidence in the dairy industry has been shaken. “It has coalesced our efforts to improve animal welfare,” Eto said. “You can’t take anything for granted in this world.” He said the industry will be looking to strengthen animal welfare protection measures and make it easier to apply penalties to those who break animal welfare rules. “It’s about regaining consumer trust,” he said.

Cyrus Centre for at-risk youth holds its fifth annual Leap of Faith skydiving event on Thursday, July 10 to raise funds for its locations in Abbosford and Chilliwack. Participants collect pledges to tandem parachute out of a plane, with supporters waiting below at the skydiving drop zone at 5112 Gladwin Rd. in Abbotsford. The event starts at 5 p.m. All funds raised by Abbotsford jumpers go to the Abbotsford Cyrus Centre. Funds raised by Chilliwack jumpers go to the new Chilliwack Cyrus Centre, which is expected to open in September. Abbotsford Police process held every two years

The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) is currently accepting applications for its reserve constable program. The department currently has 13 reservists and hopes to add another 12 to 15. The application process takes place every two years, and this yearâ€™s deadline is Aug. 1. Reserve constables are sworn, trained volunteers who are given â€œlimited peace officerâ€? status. Their primary focus is community policing and crime prevention. They also

perform traffic duties, assist at special events, aid police officers in a variety of training capacities, participate in ride-alongs, and assist in other duties as required. Successful candidates must complete the Reserve Constable Training Program. This yearâ€™s training is anticipated to start in October and end in February, with classes held two nights a week from 6 to 10 p.m. and every other Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Candidates study legal issues, crime

prevention, traffic, professionalism and ethics, communication tactics, and self-defence training. They must write two provincial exams, conducted by the Justice Institute of BC, and score a minimum of 70 per cent on each. Candidates are asked to make a commitment of two years and a minimum of 12 hours per month. Three charged following Bradner robbery Police find vehicle and suspects after convenience store targeted Three people have been arrested and charged following a robbery last Thursday at a convenience store in the 5400 block of Bradner Road. Abbotsford Police patrol division officers were called to the site at 7:35 p.m.

Two men had confronted the 66-year-old store manager and stole cash, lottery tickets and cigarettes.

One of the men was brandishing a knife, and the suspects fled from the area in a white sedan.

APD officers arrived on scene and began searching for the vehicle and suspects. Eventually, the vehicle

was located near 264 Street in Aldergrove. The subsequent investigation and tracking resulted in the ar-

rest of two men and one woman. James Russell Fraser, 30, and Jesse Kaj Thomsen, 22, have now

been charged with robbery, and Leah Renee Dan, 30, has been charged with possession of stolen property.

Sodexo deal

A tentative agreement has been reached between the Hospital Employeesâ€™ Union and Sodexo at Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre. A ratification vote will take place June 24. The proposed 40month contract ending in September 2016 includes a wage increase of 80 cents an hour for employees. According to the HEU, benefits will also improve. More than 240 Hospital Employeesâ€™ Union (HEU) members work in support services for Sodexo and have been without a contract since May 2013. Sodexo is the Frenchmultinational contracted by Access Health Ltd. in 2008 to deliver support services.

Chamber-organized tour visits four local dairy operations About 70 people visited a number of Abbotsford farms Friday as part of the 2014 Agriculture Bus Tour, organized by the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce. The dairy industry was this year’s focus, with stops at EcoDairy, Birchwood Dairy, Rosegate Dairy and Goat’s Pride Dairy. There are more than 100 dairy producers in Abbotsford who ship approximately 140 million litres of milk per year – about 20 per cent of the province’s production. The province as a whole has about 70,000 cows that produce almost 700 mil-

lions litres of milk, and the Fraser Valley produces approximately 73 per cent of that. Agriculture contributes $1.8 billion annually to economy Abbotsford has a strong agricultural history, and the industry continues to contribute significantly to the cityâ€™s economy. A study by the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce pegged the earnings at $7,410 per acre. It found that farming supports more than 11,000 jobs, and generates $1.8 billion in annual economic activity. One in four private sector jobs in the city rely on agriculture. The city has also developed into a hub for B.C. agricultureâ€™s office jobs. There are 25 different producer associations, which concern themselves with the promotion and marketing of these food products,

located in Abbotsford. Whatâ€™s more, a large Ministry of Agriculture office employs more of this sectorâ€™s experts. Blueberries have become the key crop. Consumer demand for these healthy little fruits spiked after researchers found they have anticancer, anti-aging and heart-health properties. There are now 23,000 acres of blueberry plants in B.C., growing some 105 million pounds in 2012, an estimated 40 per cent of that is grown in Abbotsford. The Fraser Valley once produced more than 40 million pounds of raspberries â€“ most of it from Abbotsford. However, that is slowly being replaced by more

lucrative blueberry production, and has been reduced to about 25 million pounds â€“ 20 million from Abbotsford. Barns the length of a football field on Sumas and Matsqui Prairies are the home of the Abbotsford poultry industry, which supplies one-third of the provinceâ€™s poultry business. Chicken, turkey and egg production generates about a quarter billion dollars every year. According to government statistics, the Fraser Valley provides 87 per cent of the provinceâ€™s broilers (chicken meat), 98 per cent of the turkeys, 100 per cent of the broiler breeders (hatching eggs) and 79 per cent of the eggs.

Abbotsford farmers account for approximately half of that product. Part of the reason is the cityâ€™s central location and the producersâ€™ close proximity to local processing plants and markets. The city is home to hatcheries and supply businesses and companies that provide services such as hauling and cleaning. The net result is the poultry business makes up more than 40 per cent of the agricultural job market. crops. There are significant quantities of broccoli, brussels sprouts and cauliflower. Almost half of the province’s mushroom crop is grown in Abbotsford, with 106,000 square metres in production here. There has also been a recent boom in the greenhouse industry, producing cucumbers and peppers. Greenhouses offer about 700,000 square metres of growing space in Abbotsford, which represents about 13 per cent of B.C.’s greenhouses. The Bradner area has a rich heritage in the bulb-growing industry. Abbotsford’s daffodils alone are estimated at being worth $3.5 million per year, and the total bulb industry a blooming $6.5 million. Poultry and livestock have to eat, and the feed business in Abbotsford is worth between $250 and $350 million per year.

Abbotsford-born goalie Mackenzie Skapski has signed an entry-level contract with the New York Rangers.

Signing his first pro hockey contract with the New York Rangers prompted Mackenzie Skapski to reflect on a long-running conversation he’s been having

with his mom since he was a little boy. Every so often, Traci Skapski would ask Mackenzie what his backup plan was if playing hockey for a living didn’t pan out. It was a worthwhile point to

ponder, given the fact that thousands of kids in Canada and around the world aspire to play the game professionally, but only a minuscule fraction of those ever realize that dream. In his younger years,

Then you sit back a couple weeks later and you really appreciate what you’ve done.” Skapski, a twoyear starter with the Kootenay Ice of the Western Hockey League, is coming off a solid 2013-14 campaign which saw him post a 28-20-4 record with a 2.70 goals against average and a .916 save percentage. The Rangers picked him in the sixth round of last summer’s NHL entry draft. He’s got one more year of WHL eligibility, but the Rangers have expressed that they plan to turn him pro this season, with the Hartford Wolf Pack (AHL) and Greenville Road Warriors (ECHL) among his possible destinations. Harry Norman It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Harry Norman Hurford, at the age of 71, on June 17th in Abbotsford, B.C. Harry will be missed by his beloved wife Peggy, daughter Kimberley, his four sisters: Donna, Linda, Norma and Lorna; and his stepchildren: Jeff, Jennifer, Sue and Josie. Harry loved his grandchildren: Owen, Olivia, Jessica, Nicolas, Liam, Brooklyn, and Sidney. The family would like to thank all the medical professionals who showed compassion and care for Harry. A memorial service will be held June 28th at 2:00 p.m. at West Heights Gospel Chapel -32060 7th Ave. Mission B.C. Frances Akins passed away peacefully on June 15, 2014 at ARHCC with her husband and daughters by her side. Her passing was the culmination of a valiant five year battle with cancer. Fran was born in Winnipeg to Harry and Rose Smith, but moved at an early age to BC, spending most of her youth in Bradner, then moving with her family to Abbotsford in 1958, where she resided until her death. A strong advocate for the protection of wildlife and the conservation of their habitats, Fran enjoyed long walks on nature trails. Fran is survived by her husband Wayne, daughters Andrea Middleton (Jamie) and Heather Jalbout (Talid), sister Rosemary Bingham (Paul), and her grandchildren Jordyn, Charlotte, Carter, Elan and Théo. In accordance with Fran’s wishes, no service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Nature Conservancy of Canada or the Canadian Wildlife Federation.

Doris J. Paterson, well-known artist and author, died after a short illness at the Christine Morrison Hospice June 11, 2014. Doris was born in Portsmouth England in 1924. She had been looking forward to her 90th birthday next month. Doris was predeceased by her husband Willy Smith two months ago. Willy was the focus of the popular series of books written by Doris, such as the Willy Stories, in which she wrote with humour and poignancy about her relationship with the “bicycle man.” Doris is survived by ten children (Barbara/George; Brenda/Rex; Scott/Michelle; Patrick/Pauline; Ted/Debbie; Laura/Gregg; Norman Pearce/ Nanette; Mark/Lorna; Joy/ Dario; and Paul/Jackie), as well as a brother John Pearce in Australia. Family stories tell that Doris’ talents were a constant source of entertainment when she was growing up. She could always be counted on to cheer her parents and siblings with storytelling, drawing and play acting. She had a natural flair for the dramatic and starred in many school plays in England and Hong Kong. She was also exceptionally beautiful. She won the crown as Queen of Leamington Spa in England when she was 17. She was extremely popular with soldiers and airmen when she volunteered at War-

Doris experienced many challenges in her life. She lost two children, she endured many moves across Canada in Ted’s career in the air force, and she lived with Ted and ten children in houses with only one bathroom. Although she had always “dabbled” in visual art, when she and Ted were divorced in 1982, she moved from Winnipeg to Nanaimo and then later to Mission to develop her artistic talents to their full potential. Doris has received many awards, too numerous to mention here, in acknowledgement of her community service and her artistic ability. She was particularly grateful for receiving the Mission Muse, the Mission Senior Idol, the Mission Woman of the Year, and the Pathfinder awards. She was profoundly appreciative for the support she received in her visual art and her writing from the people of Mission. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Christine Morrison Hospice (c/o Mission Hospice Society Unit E 7311 James St., Mission BC V2V 3V5) in Doris’ memory. A celebration of her life will be held at the Mission Arts Centre Rock Family Gallery June 28, 2014 at 1:00 PM. The event will be in conjunction with the opening of an art show to profile the work of Doris Paterson and Barbara Metz. Lenna passed peacefully from this life the afternoon of June 10th, 2014. She was surrounded and supported by her loving family and friends during the last days of her life. Lenna was born in Loughborough, Ontario. She was the oldest daughter of John and Nellie Stewart. In 1927, at the age of 19 Lenna married Peter Samuel James, over the next 11 years they had 7 children. They moved from Saskatchewan to BC in 1934, and settled in the Fraser Valley, eventually moving to the Deroche area in 1955, and onto Taylor Road four years later. Peter passed away in 1973; they had been married for 46 years. Lenna is survived by four children (and spouses): Leonard James; Gwen Gage; Hilda Cyr (Ed); Deanna Dusanj: twenty-three grandchildren, forty-nine great grandchildren, and at last count about forty-eight great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Peter, daughter Nancy, son Peter, daughter Evelyn, granddaughter Michelle, and great great granddaughter Schyler. A private scattering of ashes will be held for the family on Saturday June 28, 2014, at 10:00 am, followed by a Pot-Luck lunch at the Deroche Community Hall at 12:00 for all family and friends. (b. May 13, 1926) left us on June 15, 2014 at Abbotsford Regional Hospital. He had been in hospital for 3 months but his death was still unexpected. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 62 years, Patricia, his two daughters Margot and Trevi, and grandchildren Mariel and Bryn. He is survived by his two sisters, Mart and Sally in the Netherlands, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews in England and in Holland. He will also be missed by his many friends in the flying fraternity and others in B.C. and abroad. John was born in The Hague, and almost immediately embarked on an ocean voyage with his family to their new posting on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. At six years of age John returned to the Netherlands where he attended school and spent the later war years evading capture by the Nazis. After the occupation ended, John enlisted in the Royal Netherlands Air Force. His first flight on New Year’s Day, 1947 ended in a crash in the middle of a forest. Undeterred, John solo’d in a Tiger Moth on April 14, 1947 and went on to enjoy a successful career flying Harvards, Spitfires and Gloster Meteors, attaining the rank of Captain. In September of 1951 John married his British sweetheart, Patricia Lee and they lived in Holland until he retired from the RNLAF in 1957 when the young family immigrated to Canada. John’s Canadian flying career began as an instructor in Kelowna and Penticton, and in 1961 he became the Chief Flying Instructor at the first civilian flying school at Abbots-

ford Airport. He trained many pilots who went on to careers in aviation. He was one of the founding members of the Abbotsford Flying Club, and instrumental in starting the Abbotsford International Airshow in 1962. Many will remember his “How Not to Fly” act from those early years. As well as flying aerobatics, John raced Stock planes at Bakersfield, Pendleton and Reno and was quite successful, winning second place several times. John joined Pacific Western Airlines in 1969 and retired as Captain in 1986 having flown the DC-6, C-130 Hercules and the B737. While flying the “Herc” John traveled all over the world, from Angola to Argentina, and a number of exotic and dangerous places in between. He was a great story-teller, and told many tales about his adventures during this time. After retiring, John continued flying, instructing, mentoring and examining new pilots and instructors as a Designated Flight Test Examiner until his 81st birthday. He continued to be a staunch supporter of the Abbotsford Flying Club and the Abbotsford Airshow and his lifelong love of flying remained the focus of his life until his last day. John loved spending time with his family and was very proud of his grandchildren, Mariel and Bryn. John enjoyed photography, and most of his subjects were his family and friends, illustrating how important they were to him. He was a great traveler, extensively touring Europe, Africa, Mexico, the US and Canada with his wife Patricia. He especially treasured the time spent with his family and friends in Holland and England. John loved classical music, and was particularly fond of Mozart. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Abbotsford Flying Club at Abbotsford Airport 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 13, 2014.
